Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Oct

Bold pattern and color dominate this week’s “Out of the Box” rundown with stripes, florals and a variety of other fun prints. We’re in the pre movie award season gauntlet and magazines continue to celebrate the best of the year (even though it is only October).

Oh, and Stranger Things is back today, but I am sure you are probably already aware of this.

For all things Halloween TV from teen shows in the ’90s check out my round-up here. And I also interviewed 1922 costume designer Claudia Da Ponte about dressing for horror.“Women like looking sexy, but it doesn’t mean we want to fuck you.” Stitch Cate Blanchett’s words onto a cushion and I will visit your Etsy store. At the InStyle Awards, Cate Blanchett gave a blistering speech and as with last week’s Elle celebration, this is exactly the kind of thing I need to hear right now.

Blanchett was given the Style Icon Award and her striped Givenchy frock shows exactly why this was the right choice; she looks cool af posing next to Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi and he is also showing off his trademark sartorial prowess.  One of my favorite designers is Mary Katrantzou as her looks are never boring; this is once again the case at the InStyle Awards and this mixed textured frock on Lauren Cohan is serving up a heap of dramatic flair. Great lip color from the Walking Dead star too.Happy Stranger Things Day! At the premiere last night the younger teens show how to do the whole red carpet thing as they continue to embrace the fun side of fashion. From colorful pants to all the flashy accouterments; they have this thing down. Caleb McLaughlin has the perfect answer to the LA heatwave in shorts and Finn Wolfhard is giving off super ’70s vibes in a Prada turtleneck and suit.

Joined by season 2 newcomer Sadie Sink dressed in a very cute Chanel. Millie Bobby Brown’s leather Calvin Klein frock is maybe not the best idea considering the weather and it is a slightly more edgy look than her usual offerings, but it still feels age appropriate. Of course they all have stylists, but their individual personalities are still shining through. Combining two of my favorite trends—florals and ladysuits—is Kerry Washington at the 2017 GLSEN Respect Awards in Roberto Cavalli Resort 2018. This is a lot of suit to pull of and Washington does just that.

My only quibble is I wish it was hemmed slightly higher as we’re probably missing out on some fabulous shoes. Issa Rae joined CoverGirl senior vice president Ukonwa Ojo at the Fast Company Innovation Festival and both women went super colorful with their outfit choices; bold tones are not just for summer.

Ojo paired her canary yellow with leopard print pumps and Rae has gone full sequin trend in Diane von Furstenberg. It reminds me of another Issa Rae stunning outfit from 2017.Wearing all Kate Spade New York at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund show is a very fun spin on the whole preppy look and this is a sartorial path Laverne Cox doesn’t often take. It is a super cute look on her and I am definitely coveting this dress.Jenna Coleman could step right into the 1960s scenes of Outlander in this head-to-toe Burberry ensemble at the BAFTA Breakthrough Brits reception. It is also part Audrey Horne school uniform chic with a dash of ’90s with those red laced boots. A very fun segment on Late Night with Seth Meyers is “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” and the latest edition is no different.

I would also very much like to know where Amber Ruffin’s shirt is from because it is an astronomical delight. In other excellent Amber Ruffin news; she is looking to making the switch from late night to prime time and I am thrilled.Bookending this week’s “Out of the Box” with Cate Blanchett. Here she shares the cover of Australian Vogue with Thor: Ragnarok co-star Chris Hemsworth. A shot that is both moody in focus but fun in fashion and set-up. Also this new Thor is ridiculously enjoyable and had me laughing throughout. Some really fabulous costuming from Mayes C. Rubeo.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

24 Mar

Spring is in the air (kinda) and there are a lot of great outfit ideas for transitional seasons thing including chunky cardigans and sweaters. It is also PaleyFest and this means panel attire! Always one of my favorite categories as it is open for interpretation and there tends to be some fun looks.

There’s also some sparkle and a great magazine cover from Allure.Kicking things casual with TV Ate My Wardrobe fave Yara Shahidi on her way into Jimmy Kimmel Live! Mustard yellow cardigans along with all things stripes is my big clothing catnip so this look is instant heart eyes and coveting.

And here is Shahidi on Kimmel switching out mustard for Marni ruffles and talking college applications including what this means for her character on Black-ish.Kiernan Shipka in stripes is an instant hit (see earlier remark) at a screening of The Blackcoat’s Daughter and this tiger emblazoned Gucci sweater is super cute. This whole look is playful including pairing bold socks with strappy shoes and it works because we have seen on numerous occasions that Shipka likes to have fun with fashion.

On this week’s Feud, Shipka gave good bad actor acting as well as showing she is her (former onscreen) mother’s daughter in the manner in which she smokes.Tatiana Maslany looks great on a super fancy red carpet (see the Emmys), but where she really crushes it is at events like SDCCSXSW and heading into talk shows where she can add some laid back flair into proceedings. The same can be said for PaleyFest and at the Orphan Black panel she mixed stripes and ruffles with metallic sneakers.

One of the first things I saw this morning was an Instagram story showing Tatiana Maslany reacting to co-star Kristian Bruun wearing Snapchat Spectacles (there’s a lot of cross branding in this sentence) and it is delightful.

Keeping up the delightful theme at this Orphan Black panel with Tatiana Maslany and Evelyne Brochu; plus a good mix of black and white ensembles with Maslany wearing a suede/leather bomber jacket over her ruffled dress.More fun PaleyFest outfits and at the Walking Dead panel Lauren Cohan delivers on the high-waisted pants trend paired with a mix of stripes. The flash of red with both pumps and lipstick is a fabulous touch. At the Empire Awards, Ella Purnell gives great season transition awards wear in a different take on florals in a long-sleeved Chanel mini-dress with some fabulous Jimmy Choo sandals; chunky heels are in.If you’re playing the villain in the new Power Rangers movie then this super sparkly Zuhair Murad jumpsuit is exactly the way to go and once again Elizabeth Banks knows how to match her outfit to the film she is promoting (see The Hunger Games for more).Allure magazine shows how to do a diversity issue cover and this is a beautiful shot featuring models Dilone, Imaan Hammam and Aamito Lagum. Fashion magazines have not always had a good track record with diverse cover stars, but on the whole they did improve last year and this is a good sign that they are listening to readers and the very valid criticism being leveled at them.

Over at Lainey Gossip writer Kathleen Newman-Bremang goes in depth about colorism and this issue of Allure.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

27 Oct

TV Instagram mourns those lost on The Walking Dead (spoilers ahead), celebrates a birthday on Game of Thrones, gets excited about A+ guest stars and has a whole lot of style on and off set.

The biggest TV event this week was the season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead and even though I quit watching last year the first thing I checked after the episode aired was the identity of the departed. The Walking Dead is a show I generally keep up with just in case I ever want to go back and this is mostly through the Richonne tag on Tumblr.

My other favorite character is/was Glenn and this photo by Steven Yeun’s TV wife, Lauren Cohan is a heartbreaker. I am very excited to see what Yeun will be doing next.

Steven Yeun paid tribute to the other Negan victim from the TWD season premiere in a very cool atmospheric shot of Michael Cudlitz.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend returned last week with a fantastic episode (and songs) and everything about this photo fills me with joy.

And in excellent Crazy Ex-Girlfriend casting news I offer you the above.

If I *had* to pick a favorite clone it would be Helena and I cannot wait to see more of her adventures in the woods with Donnie and Alison.

Paparazzi got some BIG photos this week while Game of Thrones was shooting (don’t click this link if you want to remain spoiler free – I have SO many costuming thoughts). This is not these photos and there is something very unnerving about Dora and SpongeBob hanging in Westeros.

Get ready for an onslaught of Halloween celeb photos after this weekend, but meanwhile enjoy the SNL ladies and this fabulous sketch. While I’m on the subject of this holiday; check out my piece on teen TV classics, costumes and growing up.

Everything about this is stunning.

I’m enjoying this season of The Last Man on Earth as much as I’m enjoying Will Forte’s drawn on eyebrows and Carol’s fabulous top. So that is a lot and it will be fun to see what the new location will bring.

Also high on the fun list is Timeless and it continues to capture the same feelings that early Sleepy Hollow gave me; the core cast is just as delightful.

‘Tis the season for baseball and shooting Christmas episodes.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine blast from the past.

I still need to watch the I Love Dick pilot on Amazon, but knowing Phoebe Robinson is going to be in it when the full season lands makes me even more eager to do so.

Abbi Jacobson and Jon Glaser serving up very different interpretations of talk show style with Glaser opting for something from Jon Glaser Loves Gear. In non-shocking news, I am very excited about Abbi’s new book.

Lupita not only stuns on the red carpet, but she also gifts us with a closer look at her Elle “Women in Hollywood” celebration ensemble.

Also from the Elle “Women in Hollywood” event is this perfectly understandable reaction to Lupita Nyong’o from Yara Shahidi.

Perfect fall style from Game of Thrones’ Carice van Houten.

Americans costume designer Katie Irish gives another sneak peek into her fabulous research materials.

The fact that this card was found by Elisabeth Moss makes it even better.
