Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Oct

Film festival season continues and this week’s “Out of the Box” includes looks from both London and New York. Pattern continues to dominate and even though summer is over, florals are everywhere. Plus magazine covers continue to make me swoon and there’s a little something from Paris Fashion Week after this bumper post mid-week.

Oh and something I went to in person. I really like the Gucci bow collection and it reminds me a little of the Valentino gowns from last year (also at LFF).

At the Breathless premiere Claire Foy lets the dress do the talking, opting for a smoky eye and no accessories. This continues to be a very busy year for the soon-to-be Lisbeth Salander. More Gucci and Carey Mulligan’s gone Grecian goddess in gold and green at the Mudbound premiere. It is a beautiful look that ditches her usual twee styling choices.
Mudbound director Dee Rees tux jacket game is strong and pairing this botanical print with burnt orange is perfect for fall. It is still early doors, but there is Oscar buzz surrounding this movie and it is definitely on my most anticipated list. It will premiere on Netflix next month (November 17).Also on the highly anticipated list is Call Me by Your Name and at the NYFF both Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet have added pattern to their looks. Chalamet’s gone subtle in Prince of Wales check and Armie’s embracing the floral trend. Results are good.

Busy gives A+ Paris posing and also I would like this entire outfit, please and thank you. In Busy and Michelle Stories updates; they dyed Michelle’s hair pink and there was definitely a lot of wine consumed.Yesterday, I went to a the LFF Jake Gyllenhaal ‘Screen Talk’ event and this is less about what he was wearing (pretty standard daytime promotion outfit) and more about getting to attend.

I do plan on writing something a bit longer (probably via TinyLetter), but for now enjoy the video above of Jake discussing his Brokeback Mountain audition.

I’m glad to get a close-up look at Edith Bowman’s Altuzarra floral frock as it looked amazing from our third row seats. And while this is the first time I have been to an event like this IRL, I have watched a lot of these kinds of talks online and Edith is one of the best prepared interviewers I have seen; she asked interesting questions, kept the conversation flowing and had done her research.  In more Jake news; he is now the face of Eternity by Calvin Klein alongside model and advocate Liya Kebode and four-year-old actress Leila. We are officially in fragrance season and this is both a print and TV campaign, expect those towards the end of the month. Yes, I will be swooning every single time.

Not sure what this shot of Lupita is for (magazine or otherwise), but I am in awe nonetheless. Double Claire Foy this week and she’s got two big projects coming out in quick succession; Breathless and season 2 of The Crown. It isn’t surprising to see her on the cover of British Vogue and I love that they didn’t go for something that mimics her Queen styling. Instead opting for a stunning and simple Christian Siriano gown. Green makes for a striking background and Samira Wiley’s Stylist cover image is incredibly captivating. And in good news for your bank account the sweater she is wearing here is from Uniqlo with an Urban Outfitters turtleneck below.

And for more turtleneck inspiration; check out my Outlander knitwear inspiration piece.

Best of InStyle and Entertainment Weekly TIFF Party Red Carpet

11 Sep

As mentioned in last week’s “Out of the Box” there is A LOT going on right now in terms of fashion — film festivals, NYFW, fall TV and the Emmys — and this calls for a Monday morning TIFF party showcase. And because fall is here, bold color and patterns that dominated the summer are a tad muted. But there will always be floral.

To kick-start this week, we’ve got a rundown of our favorite looks from the HFPA & InStyle TIFF Party and Entertainment Weekly’s Must List shindig. A playful spin on the ladysuit from Evan Rachel Wood in pinstripe Dolce & Gabbana with floral lapels and accents. Looking forward to seeing what she will be wearing on Sunday at the Emmys. Tatiana Maslany won the Emmy last year for Best Actress in a drama series and while Orphan Black was not eligible, there is still plenty of Maslany to look forward to as her performance in Stronger is getting quite the buzz.

I am a fan of Maslany’s red carpet approach and she crushes both fancy and the more casual approach.

At the InStyle party she opted for the latter and this look is the most ’90s. Yes, I love it. For more Maslany sartorial triumphs with bonus Jake check head here and there will be more later in the week. Serving up power shoulder goals in Saint Laurent Fall 2017 and Margot Robbie looks like she is playing the villain in an ’80s drama. Drinks will be thrown. And Emma Stone is giving some witchy vibes — much to my joy — in Chloe Resort 2018. Just add a berry lipstick.Imogen Poots in an iridescent dream of a frock and this is giving me so many retro space age feelings. The most Nicole Kidman look in a beautiful embroidered Valentino and if it ain’t broke…Frances Ha was my favorite film of 2012 and I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am for Lady Birdif you follow me on Twitter you will already know.

Giving great floral ladysuit is Laurie Metcalf and Greta Gerwig’s Sophie Theallet frock looks like fancy wallpaper I’m decorating my imaginary drawing room with. Tracy Letts sadly switched this tee for a button-down.Idris Elba put a bird on it in Bruta and move over flamingos as ducks are what I want on my clothes right now. Idris as always, looks amazing. Also, Jake got to meet Idris and this is delightful. Someone make a movie with them as the leads. Please and thank you.The best hangout that I will never get invited to.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Does ‘The Deuce’ Press Tour

8 Sep

There’s a lot of new TV coming, but my anticipation levels are not high for a lot of the freshman shows. One exception is David Simon’s new HBO drama, The Deuce and a lot of that has to do with its star. Obviously the creative team is an exceptional one, but I am very excited to have Maggie Gyllenhaal back on TV after her amazing turn on The Honourable Woman back in 2014. In The Deuce, Gyllenhaal plays Candy; a Times Square sex worker who sees an opportunity in the legalization of porn.

I’ve stanned long for both Gyllenhaals, going back to Donnie Darko — I am not unique in where I first took notice of these siblings — and she is always one of my fave interviews, as she comes across as incredibly thoughtful and this week has been awash with Deuce promo appearance.

Maggie’s getting her own separate post outside of “Look of the Week” because that is already going to be very long and there has been a lot of A+ Maggie content. At the Deuce premiere Maggie wore a ladysuit and while you know I am obsessed with this kind of ensemble, I am not in love with the matching crop top element. The floral print is fabulous, but maybe if top was more in line with Balfe’s black bralette at the Outlander premiere — which I also have reservations about.

Velvet pumps are something I didn’t know I needed in my life and that’s a great lipstick color too.

Important Jake and Maggie content.

From Maggie’s appearance on Stephen Colbert and this Bottega Veneta is a 1940s inspired sparkly delight.

There is something incredibly soothing about Maggie Gyllenhaal’s voice — The Bell Jar audiobook as narrated by her is my dream pairing — and on The Late Show she talks about what it was like shooting a show about misogyny during the election and how this political shift has changed her perspective on things.

There’s also a lot of very Brooklyn chat and Maggie is the most Brooklyn.

There’s more and an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers delves deeper into Maggie’s research into playing Candy on The Deuce and the importance of telling the real stories of these women beyond the Pretty Woman version of sex workers.

There is also a discussion about picking out her Candy and that is something I am always down for.

And this James Franco conversation turns into what it would be like to actually live in 1970s New York, beyond those images that come from really great movies from this time. Now this is an incredible ladysuit and Gyllenhaal looks stunning in Stella McCartney as part of the Backstage cover story. In the piece she mentions what draws her to a role like Candy and the kind of women she wants to play:

“I am interested in representing my experience, as opposed to the fantasy experience that I have been fed. And in terms of sex, I think it’s an amazing opportunity to express something more like the real experience than the fantasy.”

And an answer like this is exactly why I am drawn to both Gyllenhaal as a performer and IRL.

Also, from Backstage under the topic of actresses I love listening to and here’s a link to a podcast episode with Carrie Coon that I wholeheartedly recommend.

The Deuce premieres on HBO, Sunday 10.

From Teen TV to IRL Besties: Celebrating Busy Philipps and Michelle Williams

16 Nov

TV Ate My Wardrobe regular readers will know how much I love it when onscreen friendships blossom into IRL ones and the ultimate version of this is decades long relationships from the teen shows that shaped me; Devon Odessa who played Sharon Cherski on My So-Called Life was one of Claire Danes’ bridesmaids, Keri Russell is still super tight with her Felicity ex-roomie Amanda Foreman and Busy Philipps is often Michelle Williams’ date to big award season events like the Independent Spirit Awards, Oscars (see below) and the Tonysmichelle-williams-and-busy-philippsThe Philipps/Williams friendship is perhaps the most important thing to come out of Dawson’s Creek. Well that and my never ending crush on Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams being my forever hair icon.

Michelle Williams doesn’t have an Instagram, but Busy Philipps often uses her page to celebrate the achievements of her best friend including Broadway achievements and general hangouts. This week Philipps went to a screening of Manchester by the Sea; a movie that is getting a lot of award season buzz with Michelle Williams being hotly tipped in the supporting category. michelle-w-and-busy-pAt the after party a crab cake tray getting dropped all over Philipps led to an early exit that was documented on Philipps’ Instagram Story with Michelle Williams adorably asking if she can swear on this video. Here is a frame from that moment, but alas Insta Stories only last 24 hours before they disappear forever. Trust me, it was a delight.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BM0h2tyjUZf/?taken-by=busyphilipps&hl=en

They also went shopping in Beverley Hills this week and looked super cute while doing so.

michelle-and-busy

Later Busy Philipps wore this outfit to a Madewell event and this is a boozy brunch ideal line-up.

Plaid and stripes 4EVA.oscarsAnd ending things as I often like to with a Jake Gyllenhaal bonus at the 2011 Oscars when Busy Philipps was Michelle Williams’ date for that night too.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Nov

A mostly casual “Out of the Box” this week with plenty of panel outfits on offer with a dash of award show performance ensembles, an important makeup campaign, magazine editorials and a lovely treat to end on. keri-russellThe 92 Y and Hollywood Reporter evening with The Americans didn’t give anything away for season 5, but there was a whole lot of insight and fun including a discussion about Keri Russell’s “Emmy vein” and you can read all about it here.

What I didn’t mention is this spot on panel attire in that it is super casual with a dash of fancy with a pair of white Louboutins. Also an ideal fall sweater/skinny jeans pairing and you could easily switch the pumps for boots; great daytime casual.mandy-mooreAt Entertainment Weekly’s PopFest Mandy Moore also does the heels/jeans thing dressing it up with a blazer; giving great vertical stripe and light pink lip color. I haven’t seen any of This is Us yet because Too Much TV and I am impressed that I don’t know what the whole twist is yet. *cue me finding out later today*amanda-peetFor my honeymoon I bought two new striped tops and then added to my collection with yet another while on this trip; I am very much part of the “you can never have enough striped tops” school. Amanda Peet is giving classic stripes and skinny jeans and yep, I’m here for it.crazy-ex-girlfriendThe Crazy-Ex Girlfriend cast delivering on a very active panel and it might only be two-episodes in, but this new season is magical on every level. dixie-chicks-and-beyonce“Daddy Lessons” is up there as one of my most played songs this year from both “Lemonade” and the Dixie Chicks tour so when Beyoncé played with the Dixie Chicks at the 2016 CMA Awards it was the perfect marriage over both versions. This was a phenomenal performance and I was smiling so much throughout my cheeks began to hurt by the end.

And you can get a free download of this song from Soundcloud! Thanks guys!

A couple of months ago MAC teamed up with Taraji P. Henson for a limited edition collection and gave us this fierce as fuck campaign image. Now MAC has announced that come February 2017, Henson and her Empire co-star Jussie Smollett will be ambassadors for their Viva Glam line. Viva Glam started in 1994 and 100 percent of proceeds from a Viva Glam MAC product have gone to the MAC AIDS Fund raising $430 million in sales.

This is a really striking image of the pair and that lip color sure looks incredible. I will definitely be adding to my collection when it is released in February.genevieve-angelsonIn this landscape of too much TV when new full seasons are released on streaming platform there is often a mixture of excitement and dread (today it is The Crown delivering these feelings). Good Girls Revolt is one such project (especially as my Gilmore Girls catch-up continues) and I am thoroughly enjoying this drama, the female friendships and of course the costuming. Star Genevieve Angelson discusses the clothing aspect in Interview magazine and the accompanying photoshoot includes some super high waisted pant treats.

“There are the romantic relationships in the script, but my personal romantic relationship was with the costume designer. We would create names for certain outfits… I had a jumpsuit I named Larry. I was just waiting for the episode where Larry would come out and we would be together. This is weird now, isn’t it? I’ve anthropomorphized a jumpsuit.”

I am looking forward to seeing Larry in action and that seems like a totally appropriate jumpsuit name.jake-gyllenhaalBecause sometimes the perfect outfit involves a grey T-shirt, sunglasses and a beardy Jake Gyllenhaal waving while at Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

21 Oct

September might be the month where everything happens, but October is also delivering on the style front. From fancy events to magazine covers and promoting movies I want to see; this week’s “Out of the Box” is a whole lot of fun with a dash of photos that make me speechless.cynthia-erivoAt the God’s Love We Deliver Golden Hearts Awards (click here for more on this charity) there was a whole lot of Michael Kors on display (the charity is based in his SoHo building) and standout is Cynthia Erivo in a fantastic patterned number. Great lipstick and shoe choice for this look.cush-jumboCush Jumbo is a longtime Michael Kors aficionado and this is another hit striking a cute/sophisticated balance. I am also very excited for The Good Wife spinoff for costume and all the Diane/Lucca reasons. Plus Sarah Steele is coming back! sutton-fosterIt is hard to look at Sutton Foster’s ensemble at not sing “Gold” by Spandau Ballet and this is shiny delight. gugu-mbatha-rawOne final dress highlight from this year’s London Film Festival and Gugu Mbatha-Raw serves up major in the rain drama with her big umbrella, a beautiful plunging Burberry gown and a fantastic berry lip color.anna-campGood Girls Revolt lands on Amazon next Friday and like I don’t have enough shows to catch up on still (seriously, don’t go away at the end of September). For costuming, story and cast reasons I am looking forward to this and Anna Camp looks great in this very Giambattista Valli cute dress at the premiere. Excellent detail to warm my collar loving heart.jake-and-jonAt a Hillary Clinton fundraiser event in New York a whole lot of handsome took to the stage and when can we get a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jon Hamm? Now would be great. Please and thank you. Preferably a comedy, but that is not a dealbreaker.michelle-obamaThe first of three magazine covers that delivered on every level this week and this T Magazine dedication to Michelle Obama was pretty much 50% of what was on my Instagram feed on Monday. Every single time it popped up it still had the same impact and that is one of pure wonder. Such great simple and effective styling; those triangle earrings are making me wish I had pierced ears.

Michelle Obama also killed it at her final state dinner and I am so sad this is almost over.emma-stoneWhen this cover of Vogue first popped up on my Twitter TL on Friday afternoon my jaw hit the floor; this is the best cover Vogue has done in a long, long time (Teen Vogue you are still crushing it on the cover front). It manages to be a different approach for Emma Stone – love the pixie – while still managing to actually look like her. I am a sucker for all things stripes and I love this cover so much that I’m even fine with the whole cropped element. ruth-neggaThe November Vogue is also crushing it inside the magazine with a series of stunning photos of Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton promoting their new movie Loving. Negga’s direct stare is disarming in the best possible way and the styling of this shoot is excellent.
thr-ruth-neggaAlso giving great face and style as part of The Hollywood Reporter cover story this week. And if this dress looks familiar it is because the pussy bow version was worn by Keri Russell on The Today Show a few months ago.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

7 Sep

Instagram delivers on the TV style front, film festival glamour and on set singing this week. Plus find out some intimate You’re the Worst information and the usual amount of sweater and lipstick coveting.

The Leftovers is still shooting its final season out in Australia and I am glad to see Justin Theroux will be sporting his beard throughout. Liv Tyler captures him here working the leopard print in the hair and makeup trailer.

It has been a bit of a Leftovers watching week as I got the second season for my birthday and I wrote about Kevin’s karaoke here.

The kids from Stranger Things crushed their appearance on The Tonight Show and Questlove captures some of the backstage madness in this group selfie.

Still no details about who Matthew Rhys is playing on Girls but here he is shooting a scene with Lena Dunham, beard and all.

Mindy Kaling has been documenting Adam Pally eating chips on the set of The Mindy Project and I am here for it.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ3l0hzjqIc/?taken-by=mindykaling&hl=en

Mindy also continues to document the costuming from her show and studs are definitely in this season.

Spikes too and I’m not sure if this costume or Taraji P. Henson’s own collection. Either way they look terrifying and incredible in equal measure.

The search for the perfect Emmy dress continues and I wonder if we will see any of these on the red carpet come September 18.

I can only see half this sweater, but I know I love it.

You’re the Worst returned last week with a fabulous episode and the cast took over the Backstage Instagram. There’s plenty of behind the scenes videos including Chris Geere showing off a modesty pouch/cock sock. He definitely had to wear one in the season premiere.

Standard lipstick and sunglasses envy.

Chris Geere was also understandably excited to make his talk show debut on The Late Show.

One of my favorite costume designers with one of my favorite actresses. Looking forward to seeing what this pairing brings.

Now for one of my makeup artist faves with another Orange is the New Black stars and this series of photos of Natasha Lyonne are fantastic.

The iZombie set continues to deliver on the fun and the songs.

Greg Williams delivers once again on intimate photographs from the Venice Film Festival and here are a few of my favorites. Starting with Jake getting ready, just because.

Getting up close with super couple Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber. Luckily this dress doesn’t require some awkward lying down.

When in Venice you’ve got to have a boat shot. For more from Greg Williams check out his portraits from the festival at Vanity Fair.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

9 Sep

Plenty of drinking, dancing and fabulous outfits included in this week’s TV (and film) Instagram highlights as fall TV quickly approaches.

Kicking off with my new favorite Instagram account and the Venice Film Festival has certainly delivered on the red carpet front. It was hard to pick just one shot from Greg Williams because there so many stunning and very fun photos to choose from, so I narrowed it down to a couple when really it could have been WAY more. First up Jake Gyllenhaal’s boat face is a thing of wonder.

Ruffalo and Tucci fixing each other up. This is a whole lot of handsome man in evening wear.

Now feeling an even deeper affinity for Diane Kruger upon learning she is a spiller.

Danish Pacey has been the unofficial nickname for Borgen star Pilou Asbæk in plenty of Twitter convos so this post from Joshua Jackson brought squeals of delight (and was all the better as it occurred on my birthday). Now to find a movie/show they can star in as brothers.

https://instagram.com/p/7Yfjdpi_sd/?taken-by=youretheworstfxx

Happy You’re the Worst Day! Celebrate with a plate of Edgar’s nachos.

Jussie Smollet continues to torture his onscreen mom Taraji P. Henson by surreptitiously filming her in various sleeping/singing positions.

Lots of dancing on the Jane the Virgin set and Justin Baldoni and Brett Dier heart each other a whole lot more than their characters do.

Exhibit B of how much this cast likes to dance.

So ready for Bridget Regan causing more havoc on this show.

And also on this one.

A work outfit that I would like in my closet. And Jessica Williams is pulling a real life heart eyes emoji face. [insert own heart eye emoji face here]

I don’t know how Queen Margo Martindale has not already been on The Good Wife, but here she is filming the forthcoming seventh season.

From the mega Shondaland triple magazine shoot for Entertainment WeeklyEssence and People. There are a whole lot of people on these shows.

SJP joins Billy Eichner for some running around the street and shouting at people antics. I cannot wait.

Followed up by this matching bralet and shorts beauty.

A very happy holiday weekend and end of the summer from James Wolk. You’re welcome.

Dresses of the Venice Film Festival Jury – Day 1

3 Sep

September is a busy month for fashion, TV and film and as I’ve previously written it always feels like the start of a new year (I’ve been out of full time education for a few years now, but my brain is still wired to the academic calendar). The Venice Film Festival kicked off yesterday and the jury consists of some TV Ate My Wardrobe faves; day 1 of the red carpet and photocalls definitely delivered on both the casual and formal threads so I’m taking this as an early birthday present.  If there was a daytime theme it would be florals and Diane Kruger is kicking it in sailor inspired Preen. Pairing this with black Chelsea boots is giving me slight My So-Called Life vibes (DMs would be full MSCL vibes). Also pockets! Going full floral in Dolce & Gabbana and Stuart Weitman sandals; Elizabeth Banks is a romantic dream. Paz Vega dons vintage looking Salvatore Ferragamo and stacked platform peep toes.

I would like all of these dresses in my closet please. Comtinuing the floral trend is Emily Watson at the Everest photocall and she looks delightful in a bold take on this print. Bonus dudes in great suits includes a dreamy beardy Jake Gyllenhaal in Salvatore Ferragamo and Jason Clarke (that hair has to be for a role) in walnut Bruello Cucinelli. Pretty in Prada and caped perfection for Diane Kruger at the Everest premiere.  The ladies of the jury are also coordinated in their evening wear in such a way that is unique to the individual and shows that there was maybe an email chain laying down themes; pale and ethereal gowns with slight embellishments. Dolce & Gabbana again for Elizabeth Banks and an amazing red lipstick to top it all off.

A beaded Ralph & Russo beauty for Paz Vega in another stunning turn. Bonus Jake in velvet and he’s once again in Salvatore Ferragamo and wearing it so well. Because she is a Magical Fashion Unicorn, Kruger can pretty much make all jumpsuits work so effortlessly including this Cushnie et Ochs ensemble at the opening dinner event.

So many amazing outfits and it is only day 1!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Jul

A lot of great outfits have graced these pages this week thanks to Comic-Con, but don’t worry we’ve got plenty more thanks to premieres, other red carpet events and the ESPYs. Plus new entries into the all important #ladysuitwatch2015.

Brie LarsonA fun Michael Kors dress for Brie Larson at the Trainwreck premiere and the color block pleated bottom turns what could’ve been pretty dull into something wonderful.

Amy Schumer and Leslie MannLeslie Mann’s floral Dolce & Gabbana number is a delight and Amy Schumer’s super sexy and side boob showing Dion Lee number is perfect for this event. Even if I can’t stop thinking about how hot leather must be in the summer. Excellent strappy black heels from both ladies.

Zosia MametZosia Mamet gets a lot of flak for her red carpet attire, but there are some really good moments including this navy Jill Stuart keyhole frock and I am so in love with her green pumps.

Tilda SwintonThis is pretty tame for Tilda Swinton and while I saw some talk of their disappointment at this outfit, I’m gonna give some prayer hands emojis for this tailored Haider Ackermann look.

Rachel McAdams and Jake GyllenhaalTim Riggins is Rachel McAdams’ rumored beau, but she attended the ESPYs with Southpaw co-star and beard grower extraordinaire Jake Gyllenhaal. McAdams is showing off her new shorter ‘do (I’m very into her choppy True Detective bob right now) and enters the #ladysuitwatch2015 excellence list in this super sexy red Cristiano Burani ensemble.

Caitlyn JennerWearing custom Versace, Caitlyn Jenner delivers an incredibly moving speech at the ESPYS and this gown is simple chic at its best.

AnnaSophia RobbMore cute summer prints on display at the New York premiere of Irrational Man and AnnaSophia Robbs’ Giamba dress and sandals is an ideal look for this warm time of year. By the way I still miss The Carrie Diaries.

Laverne Cox and Parker PoseyBest and maybe most random “Out of the Box” pairing this week goes to Parker Posey in all her turban and glitzy glory with Laverne Cox in an Opening Ceremony mini dress and amazing yellow Kenzo bag at the Irrational Man premiere.

Kiernan Shipka and Chirstina HendricksThey didn’t get to spend very much time together on screen, but I am so here for this Mad Men duo on the red carpet and two very different takes on floral. Christina Hendricks is wearing a dreamy BCBG Max Azria maxi dress for hosting duties at the Los Angeles Confidential ‘Women of Influence’ Celebration and Kiernan Shipka opts for a very cute Giamba frock to support her former co-star; Giamba is this week’s go to brand for young starlets.
