Time for the Tony Awards or the final letter you need to get to spell out EGOT. It was a particularly hot day in NYC yesterday and probably not the best weather occasion for tuxedos and long heavy gowns. But the show must go on (I’m sorry) and the red carpet with its rose filled living wall did not disappoint.

This was Cobie Smulders first Tony Awards and she knocks it out of the park (or theater) in a stunning print Schiaparelli that mixes patterns while giving a fresh take on florals.Chrissy Teigen is giving me so many Art Deco feelings in custom Pamella Roland and in personal news I will be attempting to make some things from her cookbook this week.
Also, John Legend is working a larger bow tie and is now only an Emmy away from an EGOT after last night.This is fucking fabulous. Rachel Bloom hanging out with Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole; living her best life.Sutton Foster is also giving great plunging beaded black gown in Christian Siriano and the rose wall really is the best dramatic backdrop.It is impossible for me to see Mary Beth Peil and not think of both Jackie Florrick and Grams; this might be the Tonys and yet I will always view it through the lens of TV, because I am the worst. And she looks amazing here.
If only this was the year Michelle Williams was nominated because that would be the ultimate Dawson’s Creek reunion. Wearing what looks like the most comfortable dress is Jenna Lyons in snake print Voutsa x Paul Marlowe and I am enthusiastic about lounge wear adjacent formal attireDavid Oyelowo is always a GQMF and at the Tonys this is no different. Not only is his suit/pocket square game strong, but those embroidered slippers take it to the next level. Oh, Hello lands on Netflix tomorrow (Tuesday 13) and while I am far from a Broadway expert, watching this show while on honeymoon in New York last September is the most fun I have ever had in a theater. Safe to say I am looking forward to seeing it again and not being jet lagged this time.
Also John Mulaney and Nick Kroll look rather dashing, but I am missing their particular brand of Gil and George style. Elijah and Dorota: the spinoff we not only deserve, but also need.
Award season has been over for long enough that I’m once again clamoring for big gowns and fancy attire. The Met Gala is here to answer this call and this year’s exhibit is a celebration of all things Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and the Art Of The In-Between.
My Comme des Garçons experience is the wedding Cons I wore for the dancing portion of the reception and are now less pristine than they used to be. Walking around New York on honeymoon will do that. But here at the Met it is all about celebrating fashion and as with every theme there are those that get it and those that just want to wear a dress suitable for would the Oscars. The former are far more fun and part 1 of this rundown is focusing on those attendees who are doing just this.Everyone was waiting for Rihanna to show up and before she’d even turned up it was clear that she would win this extravagant event. Wearing a Comme des Garçons creation that is actually in the Met exhibit is one way to be very on theme and this is how you do the Met Gala.
Also a good reminder that Ocean’s 8 is coming in 2018 and its setting is this annual event.Also in Comme des Garçons is Tracee Ellis Ross and everything about this look is incredible; the color, shape and texture is a showstopper. Thank you for coming to play, Tracee.One more Comme des Garçons and co-host Caroline Kennedy wears a creation from the same collection as Rihanna’s giving a snapshot of what other attendees should be aiming for. Priyanka Chopra brought the trench dress drama in Ralph Lauren giving super sexy Columbo vibes. Love the pop sock super stacked heels combo.Like Rihanna, Solange is someone you can count on to lean into the theme and while she’s probably a little on the warm side there is no one else on this red carpet that looks like her. Wearing a custom Thom Browne puffer coat creation complete with train and teetering ice skate platforms.
One of the best things about the Met Gala is the stair posing (as you will see across both posts) and this is an incredible photo showing why Solange is one of the best at this.
Related because she always gives good Met, but where was SJP? More evidence of the stairs being a vital part of posing at this event and Zendaya brings it in Dolce & Gabbana; she put a bird on it.I am not a fan of the deconstructed shirt trend that is as prominent as that Fendi sweater and yet I am here for Claire Danes in Monse. This is likely a mixture of the Claire Danes goggles I tend to wear and because she is another attendee who pays attention to the theme; remember her light up Zac Posen last year?! Yeah you do. Diddy stole the show with his super casual staircase posing and Cassie looks great in On Aura Tout Vu.Sticking with her signature black and white palette and once again delivering something different is Janelle Monáe in custom Ralph and Russo. I’ve gone for a close-up shot because the detail of the gown and feathered neckline is too good to see from afar. Stunning hair styling from Nikki Nelms and she had a busy night crafting looks for Monáe, Solange and Zoë Kravitz.Thandie Newton works the theme with a floral headpiece and while I am not in love with her Monse gown (and red was very much on trend in a somewhat obvious way) her accessorizing is on point.I’m always going to be in love with a sparkly Chanel ladysuit and Cara Delevigne’s super metallic look would’ve been perfect for last year’s “Manus x Machina.” But as with Thandie Newton she has gone for it head wise and the whole silver painted hair is mesmerizing.
Cara also always gets Met bonus points for my fave ever Reese video.Kerry Washington in Michael Kors could also be remiss for looking to last year’s Met, but the patchwork element is great and she is serving Comme des Garçon influenced hair.Everything about Cynthia Erivo’s Thom Browne ensemble would’ve been perfect for the French portion of Outlander and this is the level the Met Gala needs too.I was going to lament that Ruth Negga wasn’t there as somehow she didn’t show up on my TL last night and I have no idea why as this Valentino is another Negga stunner.
(Oh hey Dominic Cooper standing off in the background. BTW I am excited for season 2 of Preacher)Particularly when you factor in the print on the back. She gets it.
Staying up late was worth it for the drama and I am so pleased Moonlight won Best Picture even if it went down that way. This is also why these posts are going up much later because – confession time – my phone was plugged in to charge, but the charger was not and so my alarm didn’t go off. I am much more rested than I would’ve been so hopefully this will be all the better for it.
In terms of Academy Award red carpets this one wasn’t as good in terms of quantity of amazing gowns, but in terms of quality there are some big hitters and here are my favorites.
Head here for the best of the guys in suits.Viola Davis not only gave one of the most powerful speeches of the night when she picked up Best Supporting Actress for Fences, but she is also crushing it in red Armani. This is how you do a nominee (and winner) dress and the overall styling is incredible.
Ruth Negga was a very early arrival and she kicked off the best dressed in a stunning red Valentino. The ACLU ribbon was worn by many at the Oscars and because of the ACLU’s role in the Supreme Court case that features in Loving it makes this more than just a gesture about today’s political climate.
As I mentioned yesterday Negga was on my highly anticipated list as she has crushed award season and this look by stylist Karla Welch is another winner. Love the hairpiece detail and dark lipstick.Velvet has been bang on trend and Taraji P. Henson makes me want to sing a song as this midnight blue Alberta Ferretti is both super sexy and glamorous. Black doesn’t have to be boring and Brie Larson’s Oscar De La Renta shows how you can serve up classic drama with a twist. Great red lipstick too.Great black dresses part two; Kirsten Dunst in Dior and the fact that it has pockets means this dress earns even more points.Bonus Dunst from the Spirit Awards because I didn’t see this yesterday and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity of this adorable newly engaged couple photo.More Armani and Isabelle Huppert is an ethereal delight in another very cool (still trying not to say chic) and this time sparkly choice. Dark red lipstick is one makeup trend I was more than pleased to see on many last night. Janelle Monáe sticks with her signature palette and goes big in an embroidered Elie Saab Couture gown. And she put a bird on it. On Twitter I mentioned that this would not have looked out of place in some of the Paris scenes in Outlander last season and I stick with that.Some dresses were made for moments like these and standing out against this impressive backdrop is Cynthia Erivo in floral Paolo Sebastian.Rounding things up on the gowns front with the best besties and while I was a little underwhelmed by Michelle Williams’ Louis Vuitton number it was different to see her in a plunging gown. Also her hair/face look fantastic. Busy Philipps goes dark green velvet in Elizabeth Kennedy (another Karla Welch choice) and they look great together as always.

Award season is almost at an end and there’s going to be plenty of style posts here at TV Ate My Wardrobe over the next few days including my personal favorite red carpet event; the Independent Spirit Awards and of course the big one. Pattern clashing comes in many forms and at the Vanity Fair ‘Toast to Young Hollywood’ Yara Shahidi continues her style domination in a Chanel double; red and white striped wide leg pants and floral sparkle infused sweater.
Managing to be both casual and glam paired with a bag which looks like a hybrid version of those tiny backpacks from the ’90s. Look for more Yara Shahidi below.How to wear pajamas at a fancy event as demonstrated by Cynthia Erivo in beautiful silk printed J. Crew. The cropped length and green heels add a dressier element making this outfit perfect for the red (or purple in this case) carpet.Fabulous ladysuit alert from Janelle Monáe at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards and Monáe was one of several honorees including Issa Rae, Yara Shahidi and Aja Naomi King (the show will air Sunday, March 5 on OWN). The splash of yellow piping adds some bold color to Monáe’s usual black and white; crushing it as always.Gabrielle Union looks the picture of elegance in embellished (and sparkly) Prada. Queen Sugar’s super handsome Kofi Siriboe gives great windowpane checks and this is an excellent suit choice. Also Queen Sugar is so good and I don’t think I have said that enough on here.At the WGA Awards Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair opted for two very different and successful floral dress takes. I am so very ready for season 3 of Playing House to come back already.For the classic award show black attire look no further than Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon at the WGAs. Great lipstick choice too. And as the Independent Spirit Awards are tomorrow it is a good time to revisit this moment of Carol parody perfection from last year’s ceremony.

Abigail Spencer joins Yara Shahidi in the ‘pattern clashing we love’ category this week in leopard print, colorful geometric shapes blended with florals.
Timeless finished its first season on Monday and it has yet to be renewed; it also happens to be one of the most fun offerings this season as it is ambitious, has a strong dynamic between the three leads and incredible costuming. There was a slight uptick in the ratings for the finale so hopefully a renewal is on the cards.Over this week Wonderland has been unveiling the multiple covers for their Spring issue including icon Debbie Harry and Yara Shahidi’s one below. This is prime time for magazines that look great and also weigh a tonne – let’s just say I was glad I had my totepak when I bought these two – and no doubt I’ll also be getting this one.
What I really like about this Maisie Williams cover is how much she looks like a regular 19 year-old, well a regular 19 year-old who can afford Chanel. But between the Cons and the minimal makeup she is giving off a whole lot of low key vibes.Keeping with the floral theme and soaking us in springtime is Yara Shahidi for her second appearance this week and wearing the much more affordable Topshop (Shahidi is now a face of Beyonce’s Topshop Ivy Park brand). Fabulous lipstick and shimmery eyeshadow.Another double on “Look of the Week” and award season can feel long especially when it is a lot of the same faces, but one person who always manages to keep things fresh is Janelle Monáe and this is the case in both editorials and public appearances. For L.A. Confidentialmagazine she works both frills and sequins taking a step away from her signature black and white palette; it’s hard to make this much frills work outside of an ’80s homage and yet she is doing just that. Magical Fashion Unicorn status always and one of my most anticipated for Sunday.
Just look for Monáe getting food at Hot N Juicy Crawfish after the show in her fancy attire as she explains in the L.A. Confidential piece:
“Like, I’m literally in a ball gown, a custom black-and-white ball gown, straight from the People’s Choice Awards or the Golden Globes. And I go into this place, sit down, put on a bib, and eat. And that’s what I love about LA, that you can come straight from a red carpet event and go to a place like that.”One of Janelle Monáe’s Moonlight co-stars Andre Holland appears alongside longtime friend/collaborator and TV Ate My Wardrobe fave Danai Gurira as part of new “When They Met” New York Timesfeature. The interview shows the depth of their relationship (they are currently working on a screenplay together) and regular readers will know how much I love this IRL background stuff.

September might be the month where everything happens, but October is also delivering on the style front. From fancy events to magazine covers and promoting movies I want to see; this week’s “Out of the Box” is a whole lot of fun with a dash of photos that make me speechless.At the God’s Love We Deliver Golden Hearts Awards (click here for more on this charity) there was a whole lot of Michael Kors on display (the charity is based in his SoHo building) and standout is Cynthia Erivo in a fantastic patterned number. Great lipstick and shoe choice for this look.Cush Jumbo is a longtime Michael Kors aficionado and this is another hit striking a cute/sophisticated balance. I am also very excited for The Good Wife spinoff for costume and all the Diane/Lucca reasons. Plus Sarah Steele is coming back! It is hard to look at Sutton Foster’s ensemble at not sing “Gold” by Spandau Ballet and this is shiny delight. One final dress highlight from this year’s London Film Festival and Gugu Mbatha-Raw serves up major in the rain drama with her big umbrella, a beautiful plunging Burberry gown and a fantastic berry lip color.Good Girls Revolt lands on Amazon next Friday and like I don’t have enough shows to catch up on still (seriously, don’t go away at the end of September). For costuming, story and cast reasons I am looking forward to this and Anna Camp looks great in this very Giambattista Valli cute dress at the premiere. Excellent detail to warm my collar loving heart.At a Hillary Clinton fundraiser event in New York a whole lot of handsome took to the stage and when can we get a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jon Hamm? Now would be great. Please and thank you. Preferably a comedy, but that is not a dealbreaker.The first of three magazine covers that delivered on every level this week and this T Magazine dedication to Michelle Obama was pretty much 50% of what was on my Instagram feed on Monday. Every single time it popped up it still had the same impact and that is one of pure wonder. Such great simple and effective styling; those triangle earrings are making me wish I had pierced ears.
Michelle Obama also killed it at her final state dinner and I am so sad this is almost over.When this cover of Vogue first popped up on my Twitter TL on Friday afternoon my jaw hit the floor; this is the best cover Vogue has done in a long, long time (Teen Vogue you are still crushing it on the cover front). It manages to be a different approach for Emma Stone – love the pixie – while still managing to actually look like her. I am a sucker for all things stripes and I love this cover so much that I’m even fine with the whole cropped element. The November Vogue is also crushing it inside the magazine with a series of stunning photos of Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton promoting their new movie Loving. Negga’s direct stare is disarming in the best possible way and the styling of this shoot is excellent. Also giving great face and style as part of The Hollywood Reportercover story this week. And if this dress looks familiar it is because the pussy bow version was worn by Keri Russell on The Today Show a few months ago.
The big Emmy weekend is coming, but before that we have a bumper “Out of the Box” with more from NYFW, TIFF and some great magazine covers.

First we had Jon Hamm rocking the shit out of a Tom Ford suit and now Christina Hendricks is giving off stunning vibes at the Naeem Khan show. There’s something a little nightwear about this and yet it is working. Great lip color too.
Oh and for more Jon Hamm (this time with a bad haircut) check out our brand new Gilmore Girls chat.At Michael Kors, Emily Blunt also gives great lipstick and ticks all the polka dot and large button boxes. The sleeves are a flare too far for me and I’d like to see the blazer without them, but that is a slight nitpick and I am thrilled we will be seeing a lot more of Blunt in the lead up to The Girl on a Train.More patterned treats on offer at Michael Kors with some A+ pattern clashing from Cynthia Erivo and this time the sleeves are not a cumbersome detail. Between this and BrainDeadI want to wear all the super cute bow/tie detail office attire. At the Gemfields in Conversation cocktail party Keri Russell is maybe a magical fashion unicorn in that she looks great in off the shoulder puffy sleeves. This event took place at the hotel where I am staying on honeymoon, which also adds to my excitement levels. Russell is definitely on my Emmy red carpet most anticipated list. Moving on to TIFF and at the Queen of Katwe premiere Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo look stunning in ensembles that strongly nod to the subject of their movie. The bold color of Lupita’s Carolina Herrera gown and head wrap are striking and you can see the intricate detail of the floral aspect of the dress here.
There are a few men we regularly feature when it comes to great red carpet style and Oyelowo is one of them as he has shown on a number of occasions that a black tuxis not the only option; here he goes one step further and looks great doing so.The pair is also giving great airport style this week.Ladysuit treats this week and at the TIFF InStyle/HFPA party Evan Rachel Wood gives great tailoring and peek-a-boo color with green pumps. Tulip from Preacher is one of this year’s TV style icons for her bold mix of edgy with feminine and Ruth Negga has also been showing how it is done on the red carpet. At the same InStyle event, Negga goes for a soft and romantic sartorial choice with an injection of shoe color always does the trick. At a screening of Transparent in Washington D.C. – season 3 lands on Amazon Prime Friday, September 23 – there’s a whole lot of looks to love with pleated leather skirts (currently on my clothing wish list), stripes and flowers. Look for more of this cast at the Emmys this weekend.At a mid-week Emmy kickoff event Constance Zimmer also does the off the shoulder thing and maybe this is a trend I actually really love. One repeat look I am definitely here for is color pumps and Zimmer nails this one too.W Magazine cover star Julia Louis-Dreyfus will also be hitting the red carpet at the weekend and she normally makes our best dressed list; this close up beauty shot is mesmerizing.October continues to deliveron the much better than the September issue covers and Lupita Nyong’o for Vogue is another to add to this list. Shot by Mario Testino in her family’s Kenyan village celebrating Nyong’o’s heritage and this cover and accompanying editorial is stunning. And this might be an “Out of the Box” record with three different looks this week for Lupita.
The 2016 Tony Awards celebrated all things Broadway last night in New York City* and this red carpet event has become one of my favorites. Mixing bold color with pattern was a big trend and Part 1 of this round-up is awash with dresses (and suits) of this kind.
*While also touching upon the horrific violence and mass murder at a gay club in Orlando in the early hours of Sunday morning. Writing about fashion after such an event always feels somewhat glib, but the Tonys and musical theater has such strong ties to the LGBT community and this celebration shows the kind of inclusivity that theater offers.

Michelle Williams is wearing Louis Vuitton (of course) and her whole makeup/hair styling is very much like this 2013 campaign. As my own personal hair inspiration I am thrilled to see Williams going shorter again.
There’s a whole lot of different florals going as you will see when you scroll and I love Philipps’ take in a strapless pink Ingie Paris gown. Busy Philipps also has an Olympia Le-Tan book clutch, which is on my ultimate list. Busy has Jane Eyre (can also see it here); I would love The Bell Jar.Another awards show red carpet triumph for Lupita Nyongo’o in a colorful Hugo Boss gown. Designer Jason Wu explained to Voguethat the look of the dress was inspired by Tetris; the sequins and 3-D textural effect is incredible.An emotional night was made even more so when Lin-Manuel Miranda delivered a sonnet that he had written yesterday in reaction to the senseless violence in Orlando.
Part of the sonnet was also dedicated to his wife Vanessa Nadal and her bespoke Edie Parker Hamilton clutch is as delightful as her beautiful paint splattered looking frock, which I love.Keeping on the Hamilton track and Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry pairs two of the night’s big trends – yellow and botanicals – with great success in Oscar de la Renta. Plus pockets. More pale yellow delights and I wonder Alicia Vikander’s Louis Vuitton Oscar dress has led to a bump in this shade (a dress I liked, but didn’t love). I prefer both Goldsberry’s and Lucy Liu’s Zuhair Murad take on this yellow tone and the floral detail here also adds to the dreamy texture.Cynthia Erivo won for The Color Purple and crushed it on the red carpet in a show stopping Roberto Cavalli gown. There is a lot of dress to work with and Erivo doesn’t let it overwhelm her. Also a good reminder that this Tony actress roundtable is every 100 emoji worth of your time.Daveed Diggs was another well deserving Hamilton winner and he took the guys suit game up a notch in Commes des Garcons. This patchwork/mixed texture choice is pattern clashing at its height and I think he looks great in a very hard to pull off lookIn the best dress worn by a supermodel category Joan Smalls takes the prize in sparkly Altuzarra.More bold florals from Oscar de la Renta from nominee Laura Benanti and the rose bush backdrop is working wonders with all of these colorful frocks.Rounding off Part 1 with another botanical stunner with Sophie Okonedo in Zac Posen combining long sleeves with strapless and a really interesting silhouette.
A relatively quiet week on the style front what with the holiday weekend reducing the number of events, but never fear as we’ve still got plenty of sartorial treats on offer from the Resort 2017 fashion shows and Hollywood Reporter award season showcase. The Hollywood Reporter continues my favorite series of the year with their pre-Emmy nominations roundtables including the monster Supporting Actor class photo, which this year features actors from TV Ate My Wardrobe faves such as You’re the Worst, The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, The Leftovers, Togetherness and Girls.
The 30-strong actor photo can be seen here and it was this individual shot of Kether Donohue that gives me full heart eyes; the caped Bariano jacket, Stella & Jamie top, Adrianna Papell skirt, the red lipstick and the mischievous glint in Donohue’s eyes make this a standout. I’m on record plenty of times not loving shoes in the beige/nude zone, but these Carmen Steffens pumps work like a charm with this look.
It’s not just TV that is getting the roundtable treatment and both the Tony actresses and actors are featured this week. There is so much to love about this group of women and the styling of the shoot is far less fussy and far less pastel infused than the drama TV actress edition. The vibe here is pretty chill and the whole conversation which you can watch below is super charming and really interesting.
I am pretty new to all things Broadway – my first show was two years ago this week when Michelle Williams was in Cabaret – so there is plenty I didn’t realize before I watched this. Namely how dangerous performing on Broadway can be.I couldn’t find the fashion credits, but I’m just gonna go ahead and assume that Michelle Williams is wearing Louis Vuitton and while I can’t see her feet I’m also gonna assume that she is wearing some form of the chunky boots (see Alicia Vikander below). This photo in the midst of getting a makeup touch up is ultimate Michelle Williams and therefore I heart it hard.I know I should probably hate these boots and yet the 90s teen in me loves everything about them and knows they would have been my dream shoe in 1999. In fact this whole Alicia Vikander look is peek teen Emma and I love everything about it. Vikander is one of the Louis Vuitton campaign stars who attended the Resort 2017 Rio de Janeiro show at the weekend and the location is a stunner. You can view the collection here.From Rio to the UK and the Lady Dior Pub as part of the Dior Express which ended with the Resort collection getting showcased at Blenheim Palace. Kiernan Shipka looks every level of joyful in a red turtleneck and the photos of her from this event give the impression that she is having the best time. Which I adore. Kate Mara’s white frock is also pretty great (which I would personally avoid for spilling reasons) and maybe there will be a lot more Dior in the yes red carpet column over this award season. Maybe. Also where is JLaw? Okay so the next two outfits are from last week, but somehow I missed them and much like polka dots I am here for all the star print ensembles; Rose Byrne in Fall 2016 Valentino ticks all these boxes. Diane Kruger’s mini Marc Jacobs dress is giving me Etsy disco ball vibes and she is crushing her red carpet choices as per at the Sky premiere in Berlin.
