Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Mar

Puppies, ladysuits and the Stylist issue of The Hollywood Reporter are all on the “Out of the Box” menu this week. The latter delivers the best roundtable conversation I have seen in a while and you can also watch this below. Sound the ladysuit klaxon! Daisy Ridley looks stunning in a Sara Battaglia Pre-Fall 2018 tuxedo at the Rakuten Empire Film Awards. Full Marlene Dietrich vibes. Every time I see Vanessa Kirby out of her Princess Margaret garb it takes me a moment to realize who she is. But she is just as glamorous in 2018 as she is in 1950s attire, including this super moody floral Erdem ensemble. A stunning Jasper Conran A/W ’18 two-tone blue dress worn by Simona Brown at the Rakuten Empire Film Awards. Love the choice of bag to make this outfit pop even more.

I did a whole post yesterday about how much fun this Americans press tour has been so far. The caped jacket as worn by Keri Russell at the Washington D.C. premiere is another distinct look and this is one of the many lipsticks I have been coveting. Makeup artist Tina Turnbow always delivers on the BTS and beauty delights. There were some very special plus ones at an Isle of Dogs screening this week and Jeff Goldblum has coordinated his shoes with his pup. Tilda Swinton always gives fabulous and interesting red carpet. The good doggo obviously draws focus, but this is a fabulous jacket.

While I’m on the subject of Isle of Dogs; I am a Wes Anderson fan and I am looking forward to this film, but this review by Justin Chang gave me pause (and reinforced some of my concerns from aspects of the trailer). This is why diversity in film criticism is so important.

Regular readers will know how much I love a roundtable, especiallyHollywood Reporter roundtable. So I am thrilled that the annual Stylists issue also includes the first ever stylist roundtable featuring Law Roach (Zendaya, Mary J. Blige) Jeanne Yang (Kumail Nanjiani), Jason Bolden (Ava DuVernay), Tara Swennen (Allison Janney) and a woman I have mentioned countless times on here, particularly for menswear; Ilaria Urbinati (Armie Hammer, Donald Glover, Rami Malek).

This is a fascinating conversation that gets to the heart of the work a stylist does during award season and beyond. It includes having to negotiate with brands depending on who the client is, which stylist had two days to find a dress before the Oscars and how they sourced that many black ensembles for this year’s Golden Globes. A fascinating and enlightening watch that includes a range of opinions and processes when approaching this job.The Hollywood Stylist issue of The Hollywood Reporter is one of my most anticipated—see also the Emmy actress issues and the Beauty issue—and the fact that it comes just after award season means we get to celebrate the people behind the looks we have been drooling over. The hard work deserves attention.

The Black Panther press tour is going to be long remembered for how incredible it was from both a menswear and gown POV. Chadwick Boseman delivered time after time in an array of striking blazers. He appears on the front cover with stylist Ashley Weston in another standout blazer, Weston bounces off this sartorial choice in delicate florals. While I didn’t love Saoirse Ronan’s Oscar frock, she kept things interesting throughout award season and it was impossible to predict what she would wear next. Elizabeth Saltzman is behind this bold style journey and I love everything about this candy pink cover in the Swingers diner. Lena Waithe is changing the game as her Vanity Fair cover story informs us, but so is new VF Editor-in-Chief, Radhika Jones. I screamed with joy when I first saw this image because it was such a surprise. Not because Lena Waithe doesn’t deserve it (she does), but because this is a surprise for a magazine like VF (which I end up buying pretty much every month, even after I didn’t renew my subscription), which featured Jennifer Lawrence last month and Alec Baldwin for the same cover last year.

I also love that style wise they haven’t tried to put Waithe in an ensemble that isn’t her. This is a beautiful cover and I cannot wait to pick it up when it hits newsstands March 29. Looks like I might re-subscribe too if this is any indication as to what direction Jones is taking the magazine in.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from Comic-Con

28 Jul

A special bonus “Behind the Insta-Scenes” column this week covering all things Comic-Con; from TV superheroes to movies. Plus casts from shows including iZombieThe Walking DeadGame of Thrones and Orphan Black descending on San Diego.

Kicking off with one of the most stylish moments from the whole convention and the Black Panther press tour and movie is already top of my Marvel most anticipated list.

More Danai Gurira and this time with her Walking Dead co-stars. Not just an excuse to see Gurira’s amazing LWD again, but also for some Jeffery Dean Morgan beardie selfie goodness.

Comic-Con Instagram is awash with the mass group cast selfie; here is the Kong: Skull Island effort. A little on the blurry side, but points for the amount of people in it.

Behind the scenes on these group posed shots is also a big thing from Comic-Con Insta. Chris Pratt is looking in a whole different direction.

More casual style treats from Tatiana Maslany and the whole Orphan Black cast, which looks so tiny when you remember Maslany plays over 50% of the parts. Lovely to see Maslany’s double Kathryn Alexandre taking part in these festivities as she is just as vital.

When Donnie met Hodor.

One of my favorite things about Comic-Con is getting to see the Game of Thrones cast hanging with co-stars they have never had a scene with.

The CW superheroes fly in style (sans super powers). For a really thorough Comic-Con journey and behind the scenes then Grant Gustin has your more than covered.

No Hannibal Panel (or Pannibal) and Comic-Con this year, but Bryan Fuller made sure Hannibal was in attendance.

James Wolk with coffee instantly makes me think of Mad Men and for that I am grateful.

2016 Comic-Con Fashion Round-Up: Panels, Parties and Photocalls

25 Jul

Comic-Con is always a style favorite because there is such a variety of looks across the various appearances from onstage to parties and this year is no different.

Out of the Box” covered the start of the 2016 convention and now we have the best looks from the rest of the weekend.Marvel ladiesThe Marvel casting department continue to crush it and this group shot from Saturday after the Brie Larson is Captain Marvel reveal is giving me so many feelings. This is a whole lot of talented women and I suddenly no longer have superhero movie fatigue (the new Wonder Woman trailer also helped).

Plus there is a lot of different style choices going on here and this means the focus is spread throughout; green in various shades is a the dominant color choice and there is a good mix of pants and frocks in varying lengths. Basically, the list of things I love about this photo is long.Lupita Nyong'oLet’s break down some of the individual looks from the group shot above.

First up Lupita Nyong’o wearing Givenchy Resort 2017 (instant Beyoncé playing in my head) striking the balance between casual and fancy in a frock which could do day or evening in equal measure. Tilda and BrieA green crushed velvet suit is not an easy ensemble to pull off, but for Tilda Swinton this is very much in her sartorial wheelhouse and once again she is adding even more color with a pop of pink lipstick. Also going for the pants/green approach or rather pants adjacent is Brie Larson in a Gabriela Hearst Resort 2017 jumpsuit; giving of a 1970s superhero vibe, which I am more than here for.Danai Gurira Comic ConCaptain Marvel wasn’t the only Marvel casting news and Danai Gurira joining Black Panther as Okoye got me all in a fluster and not just because of how incredible the promo tour for this movie will be. Gurira’s gone for a knockout dress for this announcement and I wouldn’t expect any less from a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave.Danai GuriraDouble Danai Gurira and opting for simple chic at the Walking Dead panel (#Richonne4EVA) with a dreamy dress choice (except for those of us with a tendency to spill).Michael B JordanT-Rex sweater is an instant hit – still coveting this Coach one – and Michael B. Jordan doesn’t change out of his Black Panther panel ensemble for the Entertainment Weekly panel because he is already looking pretty damn good. Jamie AlexanderOn the dressier end at this party is Jamie Alexander and I cannot resist something this sparkly. Bonus lipstick points too.Nathalie EmmanuelMore cute outfit with a leather skirt edge delights (as previously seen on Tatiana Maslany and various other attendees) and Nathalie Emmanuel ticks all the casual cool Comic-Con boxes while on SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly radio broadcast. Tatiana MaslanyTatiana Maslany’s got sparkly shoes and a plaid playsuit on while hanging out on the IMDb yacht (she also wore this at the EW “Women Who Kick Ass” panel) and she continues her every day style reignTatiana Maslany Comic ConDouble Maslany because clones and also I really like this second outfit (plus I have those sneakers!). Going the Michael B. Jordan chilled approach at the EW bash in skinny jeans, a varsity jacket and a funky blouse. A vibe I always get from Maslany at these events is she looks like she is there to have a good time and outfit restriction never factors in.

Best of the 2016 CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet

7 Jun

One of the fashion industry’s biggest nights of the year took place at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City last night (Monday, 6 June) honoring designers at the CFDA Awards. The annual event celebrates the best in fashion design and there are a whole host of stars on hand to showcase their work.

Here are our favorite looks from the night and trends from the evening include all that sparkles, black and botanical prints.

For a full list of the winner head here.BeyonceBeyoncé was awarded with the Style Icon Award crushing it in super sparkly Givenchy ladysuit (cue switching out lyrics to “Formation”) and wide-brimmed hat.

Aside from a recent Elle interview Beyoncé has let her music and Instagram do the speaking for her and this speech revealed a whole lot about her family’s influence on the clothes she wears and she had this special message to the designers in the room “I want to say thank you to every designer who works tirelessly to make people think they can write their own story.”

She also gave a detailed shout out to her family and threw in a Game of Thrones reference much to my delight.

“My mother and my uncle, God rest his soul, made all of our first costumes, individually sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls, putting so much passion and love into every small detail. When I wore these clothes I felt like Khaleesi. I had an extra suit of armor. It was so much deeper than any brand name.”Abbi and IlanaI love everything about this photo of Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson presenting the Accessory Designer of the Year Award (which went to Paul Andrew) and they both look fabulous in black Rebecca Minkoff creations.Jessica ChastainJessica Chastain combining three of the trends of the evening (black, metallic, foliage) in a stunning leafy Prabal Gurung frock. Only minor quibbles; maybe needs a necklace and/or red lipstick.Gillian JacobsThrowing some bold color into the mix with Gillian Jacobs in Tanya Taylor.Samira WileySamira Wiley is a big Milly fan and so it makes sense that she wears this designer to the CFDA Awards; what a fantastic frock this is. The feathered detail really makes this dress standout. Plus, pockets!Hari NefWe’re entering the 70s influenced portion and Hari Nef works a hard to pull of ethereal Gucci number.Zosia MametThere’s something a little tarot card reader or fabulous 70s shindig about Zosia Mamet’s Maiyet look thanks to the red embellished scarf. Claire Danes and Hugh DancyGiving off relaxed couple vibes are Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy both sporting a healthy post-Memorial Day weekend glow and Danes’ Calvin Klein Collection pleated dress is understated. Well, aside from the part that looks like a button that is screaming to be pushed. Kirsten DunstGoing back to the sparkly theme with Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte and while I wish the skirt was not so sheer, the top half of this dress and those fantastic shoes are enough to get passed this nitpick. Taking the floral trend to the next level by wearing real orchids as earrings.TildaIn a surprisingly low-key look Tilda Swinton is still the ultimate cool as fuck red carpet star in Haider Ackermann sporting the black/silver trend with a flash of orange. Excellent lip color choice. UPDATE! Thanks to the Fug Girls (via Julie Klauser) it transpires that I already own the specific lip color Tilda is wearing; it’s Candy Yum Yum by MAC and it’s great.Alexander SkarsgardDoing it for the dudes in metallics is Alexander Skarsgård in a really great Tom Ford tux.Sebastian StanOh, hello. Sebastian Stan is giving off so much charm in Todd Snyder that I don’t even care he has gone sans socks.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Jul

A lot of great outfits have graced these pages this week thanks to Comic-Con, but don’t worry we’ve got plenty more thanks to premieres, other red carpet events and the ESPYs. Plus new entries into the all important #ladysuitwatch2015.

Brie LarsonA fun Michael Kors dress for Brie Larson at the Trainwreck premiere and the color block pleated bottom turns what could’ve been pretty dull into something wonderful.

Amy Schumer and Leslie MannLeslie Mann’s floral Dolce & Gabbana number is a delight and Amy Schumer’s super sexy and side boob showing Dion Lee number is perfect for this event. Even if I can’t stop thinking about how hot leather must be in the summer. Excellent strappy black heels from both ladies.

Zosia MametZosia Mamet gets a lot of flak for her red carpet attire, but there are some really good moments including this navy Jill Stuart keyhole frock and I am so in love with her green pumps.

Tilda SwintonThis is pretty tame for Tilda Swinton and while I saw some talk of their disappointment at this outfit, I’m gonna give some prayer hands emojis for this tailored Haider Ackermann look.

Rachel McAdams and Jake GyllenhaalTim Riggins is Rachel McAdams’ rumored beau, but she attended the ESPYs with Southpaw co-star and beard grower extraordinaire Jake Gyllenhaal. McAdams is showing off her new shorter ‘do (I’m very into her choppy True Detective bob right now) and enters the #ladysuitwatch2015 excellence list in this super sexy red Cristiano Burani ensemble.

Caitlyn JennerWearing custom Versace, Caitlyn Jenner delivers an incredibly moving speech at the ESPYS and this gown is simple chic at its best.

AnnaSophia RobbMore cute summer prints on display at the New York premiere of Irrational Man and AnnaSophia Robbs’ Giamba dress and sandals is an ideal look for this warm time of year. By the way I still miss The Carrie Diaries.

Laverne Cox and Parker PoseyBest and maybe most random “Out of the Box” pairing this week goes to Parker Posey in all her turban and glitzy glory with Laverne Cox in an Opening Ceremony mini dress and amazing yellow Kenzo bag at the Irrational Man premiere.

Kiernan Shipka and Chirstina HendricksThey didn’t get to spend very much time together on screen, but I am so here for this Mad Men duo on the red carpet and two very different takes on floral. Christina Hendricks is wearing a dreamy BCBG Max Azria maxi dress for hosting duties at the Los Angeles Confidential ‘Women of Influence’ Celebration and Kiernan Shipka opts for a very cute Giamba frock to support her former co-star; Giamba is this week’s go to brand for young starlets.
