Out of the Box: Look of the Week

8 Sep

Every single year, I know that everything happens in September and yet I get distracted by my birthday (which was on Monday) and then the fall TV, NYFW and film festival onslaught takes me by surprise. Every single year. There was also the Twin Peaks finale — thanks for that birthday gift, David Lynch — and I am still thinking about that.

The whole new year aspect is something I have discussed on numerous occasions and this time of year is both super exciting and incredibly overwhelming. Case in point; this week’s “Out of the Box” and it is one of our longest yet.

Plus be sure to check out this extended Maggie Gyllenhall rundown as she promotes her new show, The Deuce. At the Venice Film Festival, Kirsten Dunst delivers whimsy in Rodarte polka dot ruffles — a look that is similar to her recent Nylon cover — at the premiere of Woodshock.

Woodshock is directed by Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, so it isn’t a surprise to see Dunst repping this brand. Dunst has long been wearing Rodarte and despite the reviews, I am still looking forward to seeing this film. This is a little wacky from Priyanka Chopra in hot pink Fendi at the Pahuna: The Little Visitors premiere at TIFF, but so much fun. And an occasion where matching bold lipstick with a bold outfit could be a little much, but black ankle boots take the saccharine edge off. From Venice to Canada and now France; film festival season is in full swing and where can I get my own white picket fence with Laura Dern’s name on it? At the 43rd Deauville American Film Festival, Laura Dern gets a dedicated beach locker room on the Promenade des Planches and she’s wearing the perfect Gabriela Hearst Resort ’18 summer dress for the occasion.

Between Big Little Lies and Twin Peaks this has been a huge year for Dern on TV and I am already very excited to request a Diane manicure. Also, I now desperately want to have a Laura Dern themed costume party.
Actually, make that a Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum themed party.

At this same event in France, Goldblum gives great polka dot button-down and the silver fox swoon levels are high. What better time to launch a fashion collaboration in New York than NYFW and Gabrielle Union looks stunning in this yellow dress from her New York & Company Collection. Plus these outfits will not break the bank; a NYFW rarity.Leather pants and a floral frock should not work and I’m not sure there are many that could pull of this look. And yet, Tracee Ellis Ross is doing just that in Ronald van der Kemp. That backdrop at Pat McGrath’s NYFW Mothership Ball is also divine and ups the drama levels. The ’90s are alive and well at Tom Ford — we truly didn’t know how lucky we were as Gretchen said post “Zombie” sing-along in the new You’re the Worst. TV Ate My Wardrobe fave, Julia Garner goes simple in black at this runway show and she is also in the new TV themed issue of Glamour, which is worth picking up. Important NYFW runway show update and there are no words to describe my levels of swoon. Calvin Klein drawing the flamiest of flame emoji attendants.

Former model and Outlander star Caitriona Balfe looks elegant in fancy office attire at the Noon by Noor (in Noon by Noor) NYFW show.Ladysuit alert! And I have been obsessed with getting a velvet number for the last year. Caitriona Balfe in Max Mara at an Outlander screening — back Sunday, September 10 — is only adding to this obsession.

I’m not wild about the black bralette, but she does look amazing and this works better than Maggie Gyllenhaal’s matching crop top number. At the GQ Men of the Year awards — British GQ always holds them at this time of year — Anna Friel goes ’70s inspired in a sparkly striped Dhela.

Important Pushing Daisies content. Yes, I screamed with joy when I saw Anna Friel’s Insta Story this morning. It has been noted that a lot of the October covers we have seen so far are visually more striking than the September offerings and I recall the same thing happened last year. There is less pressure for a big statement look and W’s new series of covers includes this Tracee Ellis Ross stunner (her second appearance this week). The color of that dress, the way she is looking directly at us and that powerful pose is all very mesmerizing. Saoirse Ronan also feels like she is gazing directly into my soul and the new trailer for Lady Bird also has me all a fluster this week.

Frances Ha is one of my favorite films and everything about Greta Gerwig’s new film is ticking all the boxes. I cannot wait. Stranger Things returns next month so expect to see this cast everywhere — I’m gonna start a season 1 rewatch tonight — and Winona Ryder for is making me covet a leather beret.

Another incredible shot from the October issue, which is gonna look great on my coffee table. Well, as long as I can get one of the covers I want (and not the Jared one).

Also in fabulous October cover news; Zoë Kravitz for British Vogue. This is the most excited I’ve been for this edition of Vogue and a fantastic sign that new EiC, Edward Enninful is going to deliver. Love this very fun polka dot number that Kravitz posted to Instagram and this is another magazine I’ll be picking up (even though I still have to read last month’s).

Film festival season is here! And this means a whole lot of great daytime photocall looks and fancy frocks with Venice kicking things off. Plus the VMAs and You’re the Worst’s season 4 premiere event. The latter is definitely on my most anticipated fall TV style and everything else list.At the VMAs, Yara Shahidi goes gold in Zimmerman and with a few creases aside it is a super sophisticated look from the soon to be Growin-ish star. Shahidi continues to impress with her sartorial choices.Sparkling under the VMA lights is Gal Gadot in a very pretty Prabal Gurung and this is a delightful look. Second week in a row for Gadot; sadly no Wonder Woman cuffs this time.Less than a week until new You’re the Worst — back Wednesday, September 6 — and at the premiere Aya Cash gives great metallic accents in a lovely purple number.

As always I have lipstick envy and thanks to You’re the Worst makeup artist Kristina Frisch, I now know that this Aya Cash TCA lipstick is Stila longwear liquid lipstick in Fiery. Social media really does help the makeup treasure hunt.Working the no socks thing and crushing these casual suit vibes are Darrell Britt-Gibson and Brandon Mychal Smith, with Britt-Gibson also giving great pattern shirt. My feelings are strong when it comes to a bold collar and Lake Bell’s beaded Antonio Berardi Fall 2017 frock at the Home Again premiere is ticking those boxes. As are the colorful pumps by Tamara Mellon and Edie Parker clutch. The Venice Film Festival is underway and much to my delight, Rebecca Hall is on the jury and at the juror photocall she wore a Altuzarra Resort 2018 dress that makes me want to get a cocktail. The pattern/silhouette also reminds me of a bathrobe that I own and anything that is sleepwear adjacent is a win. Fabulous strappy red sandals too.I’m digging Kristen Wiig’s bowl bob and polka dot Prabal Gurung Resort 2018 dress with bonus doily trim and billowy sleeves. Adding some silver floral flare in Sophia Webster sandals at the Downsizing photocall. And later on at the Downsizing premiere Venice jury member and Queen Annette Bening gives a classic style lesson in black Armani with embellished sleeves. Great lipstick and frames to boot.

You can tell it is September because everything* is going on right now; film festivals, NYFW, fall TV and October magazine covers continuing to outdo the so-called major issues that come the month before. Plus the first round of Emmys are this weekend.

*There is a lot to discuss and my busy levels are going through the roof right now as I have hit the “Whoa it is two weeks until my wedding” mark and therefore I might not be covering NYFW in as much detail as I normally do. sophie-turnerAt the Venice Film Festival premiere for Hacksaw Ridge, Sophie Turner continues to show she looks just as good blonde as she does Sansa red and stuns in a statuesque Yanina Couture gown. Now I really want to see her playing Elizabeth Debicki’s younger sister in something. amy-adamsAlso from Venice is Amy Adams in super sparkly Tom Ford at the premiere for the Tom Ford directed Nocturnal Animals. Excitement levels for this movie are high because I love A Single Man, the Adams/Jake Gyllenhaal factor and this is going to give great red carpet.

The shot of a star in motion with a wall of photographers is one of my favorite things about festival shots. Plus Venice gets the bonus of actors looking cool as fuck on boats.karlie-klossSwitching from a Tom Ford movie event to a Tom Ford fashion event and the arrivals at his NYFW show. Keeping with the metallic theme is Karlie Kloss delivering full model pose and looking glamorous in this glitzy gown.jon-hammKeeping with Tom Ford and Jon Hamm is the voice on the phone in A Single Man – he worked for free and got a suit for his efforts, which is a good form of payment – and he continues to show his support in this excellent number. This Emmys is going to be Hamm-less so I’m thrilled to see him in a suit at NYFW.zachary-quintoPatterned shirts are having a resurgence – hat tip to Rami Malek for how much he loves it – and Zachary Quinto is working this trend at Tom Ford.
This is an actual look of the week and I don’t know why Gillian Anderson is giving so much side-eye, but I am thrilled she is giving Stella face at this screening of The Fall’s season 3 premiere. And while his hand is covering most of it, Jamie Dornan’s got great beard levels at the moment.essenceThis cover says it all; “Grace & Power” is exactly what I think when I look at this issue of Essence.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

16 Sep

As with the majority Behind the Insta Scenes posts this one could be renamed “Ladies We Love” and this has been a very busy week for offset antics from award shows to NYFW. Don’t worry we still have plenty of fall shows to countdown to, celebrate the return of and some that are even further away.

Kiernan Shipka delivers her best Sally Draper pensive stare and an impression of what this character might have looked like if we’d got to see Mad Men in the late 70s. Or rather she is giving good fierce face for Teen Vogue.

Another excellent face giver is Mae Whitman with a closer look at her super long lashes and red lip color from the Creative Arts Emmys. Still one of my favorite dresses from the many dresses we have talked about this week.

Brie Larson delivers an accurate representation of what 8 am feels like when you have to talk to people and a red lipstick I would very much like to know the brand/shade of.

The Mindy Project is back and the first episode of season 4 is available to stream on Hulu. Mindy Kaling’s new book Why Not Me? is also out today and this very packed schedule means all the amazing outfits. Here is a sneak peek at what Mindy has in store.

And this is an instant favorite.

A lot of the Orange is the New Black cast have attended fashion week and are also in stunning new campaigns, but this is how they do NYFW when in costume. Danielle Brooks is working it.

Not alone in posing up a storm and Gina Rodriguez is showing off the new season 2 artwork. Not long to go until we find out what happens to baby Mateo.

Team Empire group selfie alert from their season 2 premiere event at Carnegie Hall on Saturday.

More selfies en masse and how else can you commemorate the first day of shooting a new show? Legends of Tomorrow won’t debut until next year, but I’m sure there will be plenty of onset photos and Flash/Arrow appearances before then.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Sep

The busy that is September becomes all too clear in this week’s Out of the Box as we have fabulous outfits from a variety of events including film festivals, magazine covers, a fashion campaign, New York Fashion Week, film premieres and a profile of a star from a returning show.

Lizzy CaplanStunning from Lizzy Caplan in ultimate pattern clashing Mary Katrantzou and she pushes the fashion envelope once again at a Sleeping With Other People screening. And it also bears repeating that her lack of Emmy nomination means one less showstopping moment. Let’s enjoy her breathtaking Donna Karan Atelier gown from last year instead.

Samira WileyNew York Fashion Week started yesterday so expect plenty of coverage in the coming days and one piece of fashion news that has already caused woots of joy comes courtesy of the new face of Christian Siriano; Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley looks incredible in this campaign.

Aya Cash ComplexYou’re the Worst returned this week and I pretty much had a giant grin plastered across my face throughout the episode. Which is pretty much the same expression the Aya Cash Complex shoot gave me and this cobalt sequin collared dress number coupled with a flawless sunglasses game (much like her character’s) and amazing red lip color is giving me so much life. The rest of the photos and interview are just as good including her description of Gretchen and Jimmy’s relationship:

“They’re only one representation of a relationship. The idea that one relationship or one show can represent all of a culture is just not realistic. But I do think there’s a cynicism in our generation. I actually think that cynicism is what makes it so romantic.”

Or as Jimmy might put it “Look, we’re not against sweater people. We’re not protesting sweater people’s right to exist. We just choose not to be them, because they remind us of encroaching death.”

IMG_2296The Shondaland magazine takeover continues with Essence and more sequin pretty for “Out of the Box” this week with Kerry Washington delivering another great cover.

Alicia VikanderThis is one dress I keep going back and forth on ultimately landing in the love it camp and Alicia Vikander’s custom Louis Vuitton peasant gown is a very different look for the Venice Film Festival red carpet and she’s pulling off the drama. Considering how many films she is in this year and that some of them have awards written all over them I am glad she is such a fashion risk taker.

Birgitte Hjort SorensenBirgitte Hjort Sørensen is about to do the all 70s thing in HBO’s Vinyl so it is only appropriate that she shows up to NY Mag and The Cut’s NYFW party sporting some very 70s very wide legged pants. This decade has been providing runway inspiration throughout 2015 and it will be interesting to see if it is still an influence this week. And I am so ready for Sørensen to be a huge star.

Dresses of the Venice Film Festival Jury – Black Mass Premiere

5 Sep

Red carpet treats continue to be delivered from the Venice Film Festival with Diane Kruger and Elizabeth Banks hitting the dramatic notes at the Black Mass premiere.  First up is Diane Kruger crushing it in a velvet BOSS gown from Jason Wu and on her Instagram she notes that all of her looks for this festival are inspired by Italian actresses from the 50s and 60s; a playful twist on a classic style. Bonus Joshua Jackson in a tux. Happy Saturday!Going big in Andrew Gn and showing why I cannot wait for the next and final Hunger Games press tour. It’s a whole lot of dress and Elizabeth Banks is working it.  In motion going up the stairs gives a fantastic glimpse of the super stacked Brian Atwood shoes.

And from my new favourite Instagram account here is a fun behind the scenes shot of Banks.

Dresses of the Venice Film Festival Jury – Day 1

3 Sep

September is a busy month for fashion, TV and film and as I’ve previously written it always feels like the start of a new year (I’ve been out of full time education for a few years now, but my brain is still wired to the academic calendar). The Venice Film Festival kicked off yesterday and the jury consists of some TV Ate My Wardrobe faves; day 1 of the red carpet and photocalls definitely delivered on both the casual and formal threads so I’m taking this as an early birthday present.  If there was a daytime theme it would be florals and Diane Kruger is kicking it in sailor inspired Preen. Pairing this with black Chelsea boots is giving me slight My So-Called Life vibes (DMs would be full MSCL vibes). Also pockets! Going full floral in Dolce & Gabbana and Stuart Weitman sandals; Elizabeth Banks is a romantic dream. Paz Vega dons vintage looking Salvatore Ferragamo and stacked platform peep toes.

I would like all of these dresses in my closet please. Comtinuing the floral trend is Emily Watson at the Everest photocall and she looks delightful in a bold take on this print. Bonus dudes in great suits includes a dreamy beardy Jake Gyllenhaal in Salvatore Ferragamo and Jason Clarke (that hair has to be for a role) in walnut Bruello Cucinelli. Pretty in Prada and caped perfection for Diane Kruger at the Everest premiere.  The ladies of the jury are also coordinated in their evening wear in such a way that is unique to the individual and shows that there was maybe an email chain laying down themes; pale and ethereal gowns with slight embellishments. Dolce & Gabbana again for Elizabeth Banks and an amazing red lipstick to top it all off.

A beaded Ralph & Russo beauty for Paz Vega in another stunning turn. Bonus Jake in velvet and he’s once again in Salvatore Ferragamo and wearing it so well. Because she is a Magical Fashion Unicorn, Kruger can pretty much make all jumpsuits work so effortlessly including this Cushnie et Ochs ensemble at the opening dinner event.

So many amazing outfits and it is only day 1!
