Out of the Box: Look of the Week

26 Feb

Award season is almost over, but we’ve got some more treats from the Costume Designers Guild Awards and there is of course the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars this weekend. Plus London Fashion Week, magazine covers and more.Constance ZimmerI wanted to focus on the costume designers in the original Costume Designers Guild Awards post – it is their awards after all – so there are a few presenters featured here instead. Constance Zimmer’s Laundry by Shelli Segal floral number is the ideal ‘starting to think about spring’ frock and she’s paired it perfectly with baby blue pumps and a mirrored Vince Camuto clutch (Viola Davis is also a fan).  Betsy BrandMore floral pretty from host Betsy Brandt in a Kayat dress and pastel season is upon us.Andre HollandOh hello, Andre Holland.

Noomi RapaceAt the Burberry London Fashion Week show the stars were out including Noomi Rapace giving me all the casual coat slung over the shoulder envy. I’m not sure there are many other people who could pull off such heavy bangs on a haircut this short (maybe Karen O), but I love Rapace’s very distinct style choices. Even if I’m also concerned that her feet must be freezing in shoes like this in February. Clemence PoesyI am a sucker for both Breton stripes and trench coats so Clémence Poésy was always going to score high with this look.Danai GuriraThis has been a huge week for Danai Gurira as the play she wrote has moved from off-Broadway to Broadway for previews. Gurira’s Liberian Civil War drama Eclipsed stars Lupita Nyong’o and this is a powerhouse combination. On the TV side of things Richonne happened and I can’t tell you how long it has been since I cared about anything on The Walking Dead; the way it moved from super tender to super hot was really well done.

At the Eclipsed preview Gurira did the fantastic coat thing over a bold Altuzarra dress and this color is great on her. Brie LarsonBrie Larson is about to have her very big night if Oscar predictions are anything to go by (I really want her to win) and this cover from Women’s Wear Daily captures a moment of getting ready (in which she was actually getting ready for the Oscar nominees luncheon). In the interview Larson discusses what it has been like shooting a movie (Kong: Skull Island) at the same time as award season commitments:

“On my weekends, I’m wearing designer clothes, getting my nails painted and living a polished lifestyle, then I come back here and I’m climbing mountains covered in dirt. Until this movie comes out [in March 2017], no one gets that. It’s like having two best friends you never invite to the same dinner. But that balance has been helpful because I’ve had zero time to process any of this. Because I’m not in L.A., I can’t gauge how life has changed. I’m still myself.”

And a vague description of what we can expect come Sunday “I really want it to be special and encompass colors and visions that are meaningful to me.” Larson has had a lot more hits than misses and she is definitely one of my most anticipated.Kiernan ShipkaKiernan Shipka covers the new issue of Dazed magazine and the way she is looking directly at the viewer is disarming, somewhat confrontational and incredibly beautiful. In the interview she comes across as you might expect/hope; smart and also still sounding like a teen. The latter part is important.

Shipka discusses playing Sally – “I was totally connected to Sally’s experience and willing to go on any journey with her” – and how the women on Mad Men influenced her by being “such cool forces.” Despite being in showbiz for pretty much her whole life she has some very normal reactions to meeting other famous people including her description of the time she met Annie Clarke; “It involved me falling apart.” It is a great interview/photo shoot and you can check out the whole thing here.

A mostly New York Fashion week edition of “Out of the Box” with plenty of famous faces flocking to runway shows to find out what they will be wearing come the next red carpet cycle/in their regular lives – they can probably afford the price tags.

This was going to be an all NYFW offering, but as I didn’t cover the BAFTAs (for other work/travel reasons) I wanted to include a couple of dresses from this event which wowed me.Diane Kruger, Jamie King, Jennifer HudsonIt’s New York in February and temperatures are on the chilly side so a coat casually slung over the shoulders is always a good choice and both Diane Kruger and Jennifer Hudson have opted for this at Jason Wu. If this was me I would definitely struggle with keeping it straight on my shoulders (you should see my oh so wonky gown graduation pictures). This is a fun blend of looks with Jennifer Hudson wearing the very on trend leather, Diane looking cool in cornflower blue and Jamie King rounding out the picture in a dress ideal for a weekend away in the country at Downton Abbey type venue.Claire DanesA beautiful and simple shot of Claire Danes watching the Narciso Rodriguez runway show on Tuesday. Kiernan Shipka, Amadla Stenberg, Marc JacobsThe Marc Jacobs presentation was packed last night and whenever I see a front row like this I just assume that this is the first time most of them are meeting each other. Not the case with our favorite teen BFFs Amandla Stenberg and Kiernan Shipka. Andra Day’s movie themed ensemble is super fun and that’s a whole lot of excellent bold lip colors from Day, Ashley Benson and Odeya Rush.  Amandla StenbergA clearer look at Amandla Stenberg’s fabulous Marc Jacobs ‘Scream Queens‘ skirt – Olivia Wilde wore the dress version recently – and pairing it with sneakers adds to the laid back vibe.Natasha Lyonne and Christina RicciWhile Stenberg’s gone for sneakers (a woman after my own flats loving heart) there are a lot of stacked platforms on display and I’m maybe coveting Christina Ricci’s ‘Edie Mary Jane‘ patent delights. There’s also something a little Wednesday Addams about her whole outfit and I’m so here for Natasha Lyonne’s bold red (pleather?) skirt.Juliet LewisJuliette Lewis looking like the coolest golfer that ever lived at Marc Jacobs. The pants maybe need a little hemming, but as someone who couldn’t see their shoes for the first half of the aughts I am also fine with this.Zosia Mamet - Marc JacobsSee the above comment about the pants and ribbons/ascots/scarves are really making a big swing for Fall 2016 with Zosia Mamet also working prints at Marc Jacobs. Ellie, Zosia, FriedaMore Zosia at the Kate Spade New York presentation – we picked out some outfits for Shoshanna in our Kate Spade Fantasy Costuming piece – and more excellent patterned attire. Posing with Ellie Kemper and Freida Pinto the trio stuck to the monochrome department rather than going for the bright Kate Spade color palette. Zoe Kazan Kate SpadeAdding a splash of color in a super pretty floral ensemble is Zoe Kazan proving that black tights can be worn with something this summer looking. It is still February after all.Zoe KazanMore Zoe Kazan and the Jill Stuart frock she gave a sneak peek look at on Instagram and I feel like I have very similar clothing taste to Kazan; this is right in my dress wheelhouse. And tights. I love tights.Naomie Harris - Michael KorsNaomie Harris was a knockout during the Spectre press tour last year and once again she is killing it at the Michael Kors Collection show in Michael Kors. Pink pumps add a touch of flair to this floral delight.Taraji P. Henson and Zoe KravitzWhile I still haven’t come up with a suitable term to describe something more than #SquadGoals here is the non-selfie version of Taraji P. Henson and Zoe Kravitz on the front row at Alexander Wang still looking super cool. Henson looked stunning in Alexander Wang at the recent Golden Globes and this is brand which suits her style well while avoiding any Cookie comparisons.Julia GarnerAlso at Alexander Wang – Julia Garner somehow looking cute and edgy all at once in leather. No word if she will be back for season 4 of The Americans but no doubt if she is then expect plenty of heartbreak.Alicia VikanderMore leather and Alicia Vikander’s BAFTA Louis Vuitton frock is a weighty 35 lbs. The last three big events has seen Vikander wearing a variety of looks from the brand she models for and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for her a week on Sunday. It’s weird to think award season is almost at an end.Cate BlanchettCate Blanchett also cranks it up a gear for the BAFTAs in a stunning Alexander McQueen dress of two halves and each one is just as spectacular as the other.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Feb

The Oscar train keeps on keeping on with the nominee luncheon and a whole lot of excellent daytime looks to show off. Plus more award shindigs and events bring out the sartorial delights. New York Fashion Week kicked off yesterday so expect to see plenty of things related to that next week on the site. Brie LarsonStarting with the most adorable and Jacob Tremblay continues to show the older dudes how it is done in another fantastic suit. The dash of orange on his tie pairs nicely with Brie Larson’s pink and white Emilia Wickstead ensemble and I am all for subtle not quite matching. Mixing stripes with beaded embellished eyes (that kinda look like caterpillars) makes for a super playful look.Alicia VikanderAlicia Vikander is comfortable making bold fashion choices, but she is also content with sticking to the simpler end of the scale and Vikander has done both of these things in Louis Vuitton. I’m guessing she will be wearing the brand she models for come Oscar Sunday and hopefully they can deliver another knockout.Deniz Gamze ErguvenMustang director Deniz Gamze Ergüven went for a pattern that is reminiscent of wall tiles, which doesn’t sound all that complimentary but it really is. I am also very much looking forward to seeing Mustang, which has been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.Saoirse Ronan#LadySuitWatch2016 shorts and tweed edition from Saoirse Ronan. Deal me in. Also Saoirse Ronan’s profile in the fashion issue of New York Magazine this week is such a great example of bold editorial choices that really work.  Rooney MaraA very Rooney Mara choice in Giambattista Valli that is maybe more delicate romantic than goth fairy tale. Just a random observation, but strappy sandals are the shoe of choice for most of the “Out of the Box” Oscar luncheon picks this week. Rachel McAdamsOpting for a dress that is half sheer over the very cute and somewhat twee (so my wheelhouse) dress Rachel McAdams wore to the Oscar nominees luncheon also surprised me, but somehow sequinned Michael Kors is the key to this non-scroll down nightmare at the DGA Awards. Mindy KalingMindy Kaling described her P.A.R.O.S.H. aTVfest 2016 panel outfit as “going for colorful hipster carpet” and I love both this title and the whole look. Those yellow Christian Louboutin pumps are also excellent. If the matching top and cardigan was all the shades of brown it would definitely look like the carpet in my parents’ house.Olivia WildeOlivia Wilde is very on point with her very 70s pants and blouse ensemble while promoting Vinyl (starts this Sunday) on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week. Shockingly with my fondness of all things fashion from this decade I am in love with this look.

Pre-SAG Awards parties and movie premieres deliver plenty of colorful and patterned wonders in this week’s edition of “Look of the Week.”Kristen WiigGetting so many disco vibes from Kristen Wiig’s rainbow Swarovski infused Rosie Assoulin dress at the Zoolander 2 premiere with bonus sparkly Christian Louboutin pumps. This is a really good look on her. Justin TherouxAt the Zoolander 2 photocall in Rome, Justin Theroux looks very Kevin Garvey goes out for a nice dinner and I am here for it. This buttoned up polo is also very much in Theroux’s clothing wheelhouse and yep I am here for it.Alexandra DaddarioSuper cute floral mini Giambattista Valli for Alexandra Daddario at the premiere for the new Nicholas Sparks movie The Choice (a movie I will no doubt watch at some point). Laverne CoxBlam! Laverne Cox is smoking hot in Michael Costello at the Entertainment Weekly pre-SAG Awards party.Samira WileyThe Orange is the New Black cast came out strong for SAG weekend at the awards (of which they won both ensemble and actress in a comedy), pre parties and after the affair. This color is great on Samira Wiley giving her plenty of reasons to smile.Sophie TurnerGoing a little bit mod at the EW pre-SAGs party with a contemporary twist and Sophie Turner nailed it twice this week (three times if you count this excellent photo with Ryan Gosling).Rami MalekOh hey there Rami Malek! Rounding off a fabulous January in a Todd Snyder for Champion Varsity jacket and another buttoned up shirt delight.

Continuing our Sundance fashion love-in with more knitwear, boots and coat treats for you to scroll through. Plus awards season keeps on keeping on, the American Crime Story red carpet delivers and another fantastic magazine cover has been unveiled. Jenna MaloneJena Malone is slaying at the Lovesong premiere in matching black and white checks in an outfit that looks super chic and cozy at the same time. Topping things off with killer red lips and boots.Maya RudolphGoing slightly more casual with checks is Maya Rudolph at the Mr Pig premiere also earning those all important red lipstick points. Sundance continues to be my fave for all things that I might actually have in my wardrobe. Elisabeth MossSparkly jumper dress, black tights and boots for Elisabeth Moss at the premiere for The Free World is the glitzy form of red carpet attire here; count me all in.Elisabeth Moss SundanceThis is just the best combination of all the things I love from Elisabeth Moss out and about at Sundance. My only concern is the lack of gloves. This calls for a good pair of fingerless chunky knits or some Carol inspired leather ones.Tegan and SaraMore Sundance red carpet excellence from Tegan and Sara with hints of #LadySuitWatch2016 on display at The Intervention premiere. Tegan’s grey boots are high on my covet list.Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuvallAll the 90s teen movie feelings are being felt as a result of The Intervention red carpet. Also boosted by Natasha Lyonne’s sweater looking like a black version of the dog on the “Odelay” cover.America FerreraPolka dots pretty (plus pockets!) for America Ferrera at the Producers Guild Awards and this Alexia Maria dress is ticking all our boxes. Ferrera has been a regular on TV Ate My Wardrobe over this busy red carpet season and she recently pointed out she is currently living in a world of clothing extremes.Anne HathawayFirst of all let’s ditch any kind of headlines that refer to a baby bump as if it is an accessory that can be removed at will (see every DM headline ever – i.e. “[insert pregnant celeb] takes baby bump to x”). Secondly the whole “unveiling their baby bump” nonsense can also go. So here is Anne Hathaway wearing a very cute Marc Jacobs dress and yes she looks radiant, but she always tends to pregnancy or not. *end of rant*Blackish kidsThe kids from Black-ish continue their style domination at the NAACP Awards Nominees’ Luncheon this week. And I still really need to get caught up on this show.Aya CashAya Cash was early to #LadySuitWatch2016 and she is keeping a solid jacket game in this gold lame number on the red carpet for The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story (a show that is very high on my most anticipated list). As someone who isn’t in the cast this is ideal attire as it is super cool without being too showy.Angel ParkerAngel Parker is playing attorney Shawn Chapman – part of OJ’s Dream Team – and she’s paired a bold red dress with an excellent array of accessories from silver pumps to a mirrored clutch (which looks a lot like this Viola Davis one). Also those all important red lipstick points.Sarah PaulsonSarah Paulson has been killing it on the red carpet of late and this is another triumph (even if as Samantha Powell mentions this Stella McCartney dress was everywhere in 2012). Such a good color.Amanda PeetAmanda Peet’s look wouldn’t be out of place in the top half of this post and as with Aya Cash this is the ideal kind of outfit for someone who is not in the project. Sweater, lipstick and casually slung coat over the shoulder yeses all around.Jussie SmollettOne of my favorite magazine covers of recent years was from Out and this Jussie Smollet shot is another case of letting a strong image do all the talking. In the interview he lays it all out including this:

“God, I’ve never had to talk about this, so I’m trying to find the words. If I had to label myself, I would label myself as a gay man. With that said, I believe that love is the only thing that matters, and I would hope that anybody would leave themselves open — not to gender, but to love. I would hope that people would not close themselves off from what could be if, lo and behold, you meet somebody that just sweeps you off your feet, and you just can’t do anything about it. If we truly believe that we are born this way, then why do we try to stifle the way we were born? If I fall in love down the road with a woman, I’m going to love that woman.”

It is worth checking out the full interview here and there are also more dreamy pictures from the editorial waiting.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 Jan

We are deep in awards season, TCA has just finished and I’d somehow blanked on just how much happens at the start of the year – Sundance kicked off yesterday and Fashion Month is fast approaching. Critics’ Choice Awards and the Elle Women in TV event gave plenty of style treats, but don’t worry as there are lots of outfit delights below. Plus more early contenders for favorite 2016 magazine covers.

Holly TaylorHolly Taylor’s alphabet Nicole Miller NYC mini dress is ideal for the teen star and she’s even making me not hate peep toe booties for maybe the first time ever. A TCA miracle. New Americans artwork and an actual premiere date (March 16) have somehow made anticipation levels even higher. Now if only Taylor’s spy dog suggestion could get written into the show.

Annet MahendruTCA panels don’t come with a dress code and you can go from something on the funkier end such as Holly Taylor’s dress to what I would call fancy office wear with Annet Mahendru nailing the latter. Also killing it in the lipstick stakes.

Natalie MoralesIn combining two of my favorite things – sparkles and pleats – Natalie Morales makes me not hate the cropped element. This week is a weird, but this outfit is great.

Kether DonohueKether Donohue is on Grease: Live duty at the Fox TCA party and I love that she has gone full 50s on her outfit. The silhouette and bold floral pattern look really great on her. The only thing I would add is (you guessed it) red lipstick.

Aya Cash and Chris GeereSpeaking of lip color and Donohue’s You’re the Worst co-star Aya Cash nailed her TCA panel choice and I am always in the bag for Breton stripes. Special shout out to creator Stephen Falk for the polka dot socks which just make it into the shot.

Maisie WilliamsI might be coming down with something because I’m finding Maisie Williams’ floral choker to be rather charming rather than making me break out in teen flashback fashion nightmare sweats – I had some A+ terrible chokers because 90s – and it works with her amazing Mexican wrestler Markus Lupfer dress (which she modeled oh so well on Instagram).

Like Holly Taylor, Maisie Williams is a teen that dresses like a teen and this pleases me immensely. And she won Young Performer of the Year at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards and this reminds me that I still need to watch The Falling.

Aidan TurnerAlso here is Aidan Turner at the National Television Awards reminding me why I should be watching Poldark. Nice knitted tie to go with that smolder face.

IMG_2730Bust continues its run of interesting and fabulous cover stars with our favorite Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams. Everything about this from the styling, makeup and colors used makes Williams standout including pairing a bold lipstick with a bold lip hair clip (that I very much would like it my life).

The interview is where the really good stuff is at and Williams discusses everything from feminism, her upbringing, Angry Black Woman stereotypes, The Daily Show and mental health. It is a very interesting read that goes much deeper than your average magazine profile and this issue of Bust is available on both digital and actual newsstands.

Brie LarsonVery much in the can for everything Brie Larson and after seeing Room this week I would be thrilled to see her win the Oscar. The conversation around this year’s Academy Awards is more about who hasn’t been nominated and after last year’s disappointing selection of all white acting nominees (seriously how did David Oyelowo not get nominated for Selma?) for it to happen two years in a row is disheartening/anger inducing – I also saw Creed this week and Michael B. Jordan’s performance is definitely Oscar worthy. Larson herself points to this discussion when she posted this cover on her Instagram and the voting body is not going to be able ignore the dissatisfaction when it is all anyone wants to talk about.

As far as the cover goes, it is simple and striking but don’t make bodies and their popper crotches a thing again please. The interview is engaging and Larson comes across really well. The interviewer does not when she lists the things Larson did not want to go into detail about and it just feels like a bit of dick move to bring it up in the way she does. I’m looking forward to seeing everything Larson does next and I really don’t care what she ate during this chat.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

8 Jan

Happy First “Out of the Box” of 2016 and award season is taking over with a dash of the winter TCA and the first stunning magazine cover of the year. Now is not the time to go big on the red carpet because there’s still plenty of dress/tux wearing time to go, but there is plenty to love about this week’s offerings including the two big trends; lots of green and pattern clashing.

Brie Larson and Jacob TemblayI mentioned earlier this week that we would be seeing a lot more of Brie Larson on here and I’m making good on this promise with a double outfit entry from Larson. First up at the Palm Springs International Film Festival she wore this simple emerald green Jason Wu dress to pick up the Breakthrough Performance Award. Accompanied by her Room co-star Jacob Tremblay showing that being a kid doesn’t mean you can’t look dapper (and super adorable to boot) in a tux.

Saoirse RonanAnother award recipient at the Palm Springs festivities and Saoirse Ronan took home the International Star Award for her magnificent turn in Brooklyn. Here is where the pattern clashing might enter ‘too much’ territory, but I love this Duro Olowu frock and it is the right amount of chaos for me especially as she paired it with just as bright orange sandals. There’s nothing beige about this look.

Brie LarsonBack to Brie Larson and this Giambattista Valli Haute Couture dress mixes pattern and texture in a way that shouldn’t work, but does (although I have a feeling there will be some who disagree with me on this one). It’s like someone deep dived into Alice in Wonderland and came up with this.

Jessica ChastainMore emerald green and it might be a safe bet pairing this color with a redhead, but it doesn’t stop it being a winning formula as Jessica Chastain demonstrates at the National Board of Review Gala in satin Carl Kapp.

Peter Sarsgaard and Magie GyllenghaalLooking super loved up on the NBR red carpet and showing that a black dress can be the killer option is Maggie Gyllenhaal with husband Peter Sarsgaard. Her hair looks fantastic and The Row frock blends 30s and 70s cool.

Claire Danes and Hugh DancyOver at the People’s Choice Awards (which always makes me think of this Comeback episode) and brightening up proceedings are another TV Ate My Wardrobe couple fave; Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy always look great together even if his haircut is a little too short for my taste. I assume it is for his new show The Path, but I miss his Will Graham slight unruly wave. Danes looks fabulous in metallic Burberry and I guess this will have to make up for the lack of Golden Globes nomination and therefore non-red carpet appearance this weekend.

Julianna Moore and Kristen StewartOne final green entry and another redhead in this color and Julianne Moore looks casual cool at the New York Film Critics’ Circle Awards presenting Kristen Stewart – slaying in Chanel leather and lace – with Best Supporting Actress for Clouds of Sils Maria. Over at Vulture they present the case of why this pair are the BFFs we never knew we wanted and yep I am down with that.

Amandla Stenberg Teen VogueAmandla Stenberg covers the new issue of Teen Vogue and it is both a fantastic photo editorial and conversation with Solange Knowles discussing her school video project on cultural appropriation “Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows,” which went viral and made sure people knew Stenberg was someone to pay attention to. They also talk about the horrific comments that were made when she was cast in The Hunger Games, feeling comfortable in her own skin, besties Kiernan Shipka, Willow Smith and Tavi Gevinson, plus future projects.

To read the full interview and see more fabulous photos from the shoot head here. This is better than any recent Vogue cover I can remember and their editorial team should take note.

Scott SpeedmanBecause I’m not going to deny you Scott Speedman’s bare ankles at the Animal Kingdom TCA panel.

Constance ZimmerA slightly random TCA note to end on, but here is Constance Zimmer (who was there on UnREAL duty – so excited for S2) looking as happy as you should be when playing with a dog. I also appreciate the close up on those heels which glam up her outfit.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2015 Part 2

31 Dec

We have written about a lot of outfits both on and off screen this year and the 2015 Best Of series turns its attention toward our Look of the Week column, which has featured a whole host of red carpet appearances, magazine covers/editorial styling and many other sartorially infused events. And this is the second part of our “Out of the Box” rundown showcasing our favorites from a very stylish year (head here for Part 1).

Best ‘For Your Consideration’ Ad

Gina RodriguezSomehow Gina Rodriguez did not get nominated for an Emmy this year, which based on her performance and this incredible ‘For Your Consideration’ ad blows my mind. Ladysuit excellence.

Best Twirl

LupitaAnother fantastic year for Lupita Nyong’o on the red carpet and in fashion magazines with this Gucci dress twirl at Cannes giving plenty of 2014 Oscar flashbacks. Plus it proves that if you wear pleats there will always be the urge to whirl. Now for someone to cast her in a lead role please.

Best Peplum

Tatiana MaslanyIt is well documented that I have jumpsuit issues (more on myself than anyone else) and adding peplum opens up a whole world of potential concerns, but this Roksanda number (a brand we heart) is beating the odds and it might help that Tatiana Maslany is the one wearing it. The red pumps do clash with the colored waistband, but this is totally working for me.

Best White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

Gillian JacobsMixing 70s cool with Old Hollywood glam in Peter Pilotto at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner is Gillian Jacobs showing exactly why she is an “Out of the Box” regular.

Best Ladies on a Ladysuit

Mae Whitman and Mamie GummerOr rather Mae Whitman wears the “Boob Suit” by Rachel Antonoff at a Refinery 29 event and I adore the irreverence of the ensemble. Whitman is killing it with her red lipstick choice and Mamie Gummer’s coat skirts bathrobe territory without stepping on the Dude’s toes. Excellent boots and jeans pairing.

Best Floral

Aubrey Plaza2015 is the year we said goodbye to TV Ate My Wardrobe style icon April Ludgate, but there is still plenty of Aubrey Plaza sartorial brilliance including this color blast floral Suno mini dress at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Best Stripes

Kirsten DunstChevron striped Gucci for Kirsten Dunst and it is 70s inspired without feeling like it is from Peggy Blumquist’s wardrobe. Another platonic ideal of an outfit.

Best Sheer

Naomie HarrisThis year has been awash with a lot of bad sheer; turning a good outfit into a scrolldown nightmare. However, there are always exceptions to the rule such as this Valentino starry eyed number and Naomie Harris crushed the Spectre promo tour.

Best Magazine Cover Part 2

Fashion was all about the 70s and I don’t think I need to mention again how much I adore the looks from this decade, but this WSJ Carey Mulligan cover/editorial is pretty much the dream. Also more Valentino with this jacket and across the two Out of the Box Best of 2015 posts they are the most featured brand. Good work, Valentino!

Best Black and White

Kiernan Shipka InterviewAnother year of Kiernan Shipka dressing much better than me and it is hard to believe she only turned 16 last month. This Interview shot captures her fashion cool without a) dressing her older than her age and b) putting her in something she wouldn’t actually wear.

Most on Point Dress Part 2

Gwendoline ChristieThis is still the photo on my phone lockscreen and I can’t get enough of Gwendoline Christie in her Captain Phasma infused Giles Deacon dress for the ‘Force 4 Fashion’ Bloomingdales charity event.

Best Sundance Cool

Jessica WilliamsJessica Williams is still our favorite Daily Show correspondent and she is also slaying on the Sundance portrait front showing off the vital boots/tights/thick socks combination.

Most Precarious Walk

Keri Russell heelsLess weather appropriate is Keri Russell in a very snowy/icy New York on her way to The Today Show back in January. I could barely walk in these Alaïa sandals in the best weather conditions and it would very much be a Bambi on ice situation. The rest of the outfit is terrific including the rose covered Victoria Beckham skirt and there are strong coat feelings going on right now. If only it was currently cold enough to wear outerwear like this.

Best Couple

Diane Kruger and Joshua JacksonPushing recent tabloid rumors aside it has been another really strong year for Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson on the red carpet. This is another occasion of Kruger as the Magical Fashion Unicorn as I’m not sure there are many who could pull off this cutout vintage Roland Mouret ensemble and Joshua Jackson scrubs up nicely at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. Let’s hope there is more of this in 2016.

Best TCA Pairing

Mad Men TCAPete and Peggy feeeeeelings are happening because of this winter TCA Elisabeth Moss and Vincent Kartheiser moment. I’m so glad the final season of Mad Men addressed their relationship in this manner. Plus more red pumps <3.

Best ‘Could be Related’

Liv Tyler and Margaret QualleyIt might be the matching luscious brunette locks and similar attire, but Liv Tyler and Margaret Qualley gave off a related to each other vibe at the season 2 premiere of The Leftovers. Now that would be a season 3 twist.

Happy New Year! And here’s to many more sartorial highs in 2016.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2015 Part 1

24 Dec

We have written about a lot of outfits both on and off screen this year and the 2015 Best Of series turns its attention toward our Look of the Week column, which has featured a whole host of red carpet appearances, magazine covers/editorial styling and many other sartorially infused events. Here is the first part of our “Out of the Box” rundown showcasing our favorites from a very stylish year.

Best Magazine Cover

Taraji P Henson WTaraji P. Henson has appeared on a lot of covers this year and this Diana Ross inspired shoot for W had my jaw on the floor and it is why this issue is still sat on my coffee table. What I love about this image is that it is so simple and yet so incredibly sexy in a way that is so far from Cookie (who is also incredibly sexy).

Best Cape

Ruth WilsonAt the summer TCA CBS, CW and Showtime party Ruth Wilson wore a stunning caped flamingo Valentino frock and had me dreaming of sunshine and sipping on a margarita.

Best Gingham

Lizzy CaplanFor her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Lizzy Caplan not only looked super summer cool in a black and white gingham Lela Rose dress, but she also brought up the WB with fellow guest Jon Hamm. Switching out Birkenstocks for black pumps from the backstage walk to the show also showcases how to dress up/down this outfit.

Most on Point Dress

Kate MaraWhen the movie you are promoting is set in space it might be a tad on the nose to wear a dress this intergalactic, but I say go with it and Kate Mara did just that in this stunning Valentino number.

Best Leather Jacket

Olivia WildeOlivia Wilde has been a regular in these parts for the last few months rocking a variety of styles and this leather jacket over floral Valentino (a brand doing very well in this end of year listicle) gives this an edge over the other outfit faves. Trusty red pumps have been worn on multiple occasions by Wilde and work with everything from 70s inspired to color blocking.

Best Leather Pants

Keri Russell Seth MeyersKeri Russell favors leather in all forms whether skirts, jumpsuits or pants and as her Late Night with Seth Meyers ensemble demonstrates she looks cool as fuck mixing a show tee with heels, black blazer and these leather pants. The pop of lip color gives an extra kick and I am always thankful that makeup artist Tina Turnbow shares what brands she uses (and I was very lucky to be gifted this lipstick earlier this year).

Best Playsuit

Kristen StewartPlaysuits can be hard to pull off, but Kristen Stewart is effortless chic in sequinned Zuhair Murad with legs going for miles. At the time I mentioned how much I enjoyed the fact that she lost the heels and walked most the red carpet barefoot and I still do. A lady after my own heart.

Best Jumpsuit

Rebecca FergusonRebecca Ferguson was a revelation in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and she also stood out at the London Premiere in this stunning DVF Jumpsuit. This was just before I wore my very own DVF dress at my soon to be brother-in-law’s wedding and I was very excited about all of this (as you can tell).

Best LadySuit

Amandla Stenberg#LadySuitWatch2015 has been TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most used hashtag this year and when I saw Amandla Stenberg’s Dazed photoshoot in which she rocks this look I pretty much screamed in delight. Stenberg has been killing it all over social media with her super smart and observant takes on everything from cultural appropriation to how teenagers get discredited for their opinions just because of their age. I can’t wait to see what she does in 2016.

Best Floral Suit

Michael B Jordan VogueThis year has cemented the notion that Michael B. Jordan can wear suits in any color or pattern from Vivienne Westwood plaid to textured D&G at the Met Gala. And he graced the pages of Vogue in another D&G floral suit; this time showing he could work something even bolder.

Best Polka Dots and Stripes

Emma StoneThis is pretty much my platonic ideal of any outfit.

Best Co-Star Pockets, Patterns and Giggles

Maisie and SophieThey haven’t spent any time on screen together since season 1 and photos like this of Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have me longing for the day the Stark sisters will be reunited and then burn the place to the fucking ground. Thankfully due to all the Game of Thrones press commitments we get plenty of delightful off screen moments like this. Clothing wise Maisie Williams has pledged allegiance to dresses with pockets and Sophie Turner is doing strong patterned work here at the GoT premiere.

Best Sweater – Part 1

Matt BomerThere is nothing not adorable about this Matt Bomer look.

Best Sweater – Part 2

Cobie SmuldersIf there is one sweater I coveted more than any other in 2015 it is this Coach space themed knitwear as worn by many including Cobie Smulders at Sundance.

Best Front Row Watching at NYFW

Natasha Lyonne and Nicki MinajTwo Nickis – one real, one fictional – at the Alexander Wang NYFW runway show back in February and I am always fond of the random groupings at fashion events.

Best Fashion Campaign

Samira WileyA campaign which still makes me gasp all these months later and Samira Wiley is crushing it for Christian Siriano.

Best Lady Hangout

Broad City premiereSquad Goals is one phrase which has been used to an exhausting degree in 2015 (by myself included), but yeah I’m going to have to use it here because this is an ultimate lady hangout situation.

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week and Happy Holidays!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

18 Dec

This is essentially an extended version of all the Star Wars: The Force Awakens posts from earlier this week with a couple of other red carpet moments thrown in for good measure. Yes there are other movies out (but not a whole lot of TV stuff going on this week).

Daisy RidleyWhat better way to celebrate your hometown premiere (which for some reason makes this sound super quaint) of the biggest movie of the year than in a galaxy inspired Roland Mouret gown and Daisy Ridley looks stunning once again. And having now seen the movie I can say (without spoiling anything) that Ridley delivers on every level; Rey is everything I hoped she would be fitting in with the likes of Sydney Bristow and Felicity from the JJ archive.

Gwendoline ChristieDitching tulle for feathers and everyone opted for dresses on the darker side for the European premiere with Gwendoline Christie looking stunning in Giles.

Lupita Nyong'oI love everything about this Lupita Nyong’o Proenza Schouler look from the peplum up, the mesh skirt is just a combination of sheer and fringe too far. Makeup and hairstyling choices are both futuristic fun and blue lipstick is a hard thing to pull off in such an effortless cool manner; Lupita is doing just that.Oscar Isaac and John BoyegaDudes in suits looking damn good.

Oscar IsaacAlso looking damn good – this Oscar Isaac GQ cover and editorial. The Oscar Isaac crush continues to be strong (just check out my Twitter and Tumblr TL from the last week/month/year for more).

Natalie Dormer#LadySuitWatch2015 is almost at an end but here is another fantastic red entry with Natalie Dormer adding her name to the list at the Joy New York premiere.

Gugu Mbatha RawEnding this week and our regular “Out of the Box” coverage for the year (the next two weeks will be “Best ofs”) with a super pretty Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini floral number from the always sartorially great Gugu Mbatha-Raw at the Concussion photocall.
