After last week’s pink suit extravaganza, Look of the Week and spring fashion is a bit more eclectic. Lots of bold patterns, some fabulous ladysuits and sequin delights. Behold! Regular (or even not so regular) readers will not be surprised to see me kick off this week with Busy and Michelle. At the I Feel Pretty premiere, Busy looks incredible in sparkly Christian Siriano. Siriano, as Busy shared on her Stories also provided the dress for her sister.
Meanwhile, I wish Michelle’s Louis Vuitton was a jumpsuit rather than a witchy dress. The collar is reminiscent of this LV dress she wore at the SAG awards last year, but I like this detail more on this occasion even if the sequin SAG frock is better.
Also while I’m on the subject of I Feel Pretty, this by Alison Herman is an interesting look at Amy Schumer’s career trajectory. I am never not going to love a sequin mini dress, especially when Natalie Morales is the one in it. I just finished season two of Santa Clarita Diet, this show and Morales are so much fun. I liked season one, but it has really found its weirdo voice. I hope there is more to come.Evan Rachel Wood is Queen of the Ladysuits; she does not disappoint in this very beige, very ’70s looking Altuzzara ensemble. Also opting for a vibe from my fave style decade is Thandie Newton in patterned and peplum Osman.
Really looking forward to see these ladies tear show shit up on season two of Westworld.Hello, handsome. James Marsden is coordinating with the carpet and showing how to pattern clash in style.Carrying on the crush theme with Jimmi Simspon; I adore him and those clear frames. This is also a fun and different suit choice for spring.I finally saw A Quiet Place and I am thankful for Krasinski’s beard/knitwear in this movie, as it gave me something to focus on instead of the intense dread levels. What a movie. Emily Blunt delivered reactions to destroy me on every level and it is nice seeing them having a lovely time on the red carpet.
This is at Variety’s ‘Power of Women‘ event, where Blunt was being honored. Blunt wears floral Prada, which has a surprising touch of sequins on the shoulders. Also getting honored was Viola Davis, wearing her fave shade of pink (it looks great on her) in Pamella Roland; more peplum and it would appear that 2012 is making a comeback. I’m not sure how I feel like this on the whole, but Davis looks fabulous. Sandra Oh gives great casual outfit heading into Jimmy Kimmel Live! I am a little obsessed with sweats like this at the moment. In fact I would wear this entire outfit. And now for what Sandra Oh wore on the show. This is a great jumpsuit; Oh looks chic as hell (sorry, Reynolds Woodcock). This also reminds me that I still need to watch Killing Eve.
Get yourself someone who can do both casual and fancy. It was the Scandal series finale last night (things were handled, great clothes were worn), but earlier this week Kerry Washington attended Eva Longoria’s Star ceremony in a killer outfit.
Houndstooth appeared from time to time in Olivia Pope’s wardrobe, but she would not have worn something as colorful as this Oscar de la Renta frock. Sunglasses give it a daytime glam feel and I am head over heels for this look.
Award season is officially over, Fashion Week is officially over. But the events they keep on coming. The annual FX All-Star party, SXSW, sparkly suits and an amazing magazine cover feature in this edition of “Out of the Box.”At the FX All-Star event in New York, Sarah Paulson and Billie Lourd looked very pleased to see each other. Black tights are still very much required with this weather so I am all in on Billie Lourd’s choice here. This green floral jacquard Gucci Resort 2018 frock and teal heel combination is a dream.
Meanwhile, Sarah Paulson is serving dramatic power dressing in a grey Dior suit. I thought it was a skirt at first, but nope those are the widest of wide pants. I love them.
Congratulations to You’re the Worst creator Stephen Falk and make-up artist Kristina Frisch on the new baby! Those Saint Laurent shorts belong in 2001—this is another indicator that early ’00s fashion is making a dreaded comeback—but I love the top half of Keri Russell’s outfit. Switching out the shirt from the runway look for something less fussy was a good move and it is always fun seeing these two on the red carpet.
Season six of The Americans the new trailer is now less than two weeks away; it looks tense as hell.
Taking this as a personal message to me. SXSW is a lot like Sundance in both the kinds of work getting showcased and the more casual sartorial leanings. The big difference here is the temperature. As with Sundance there are a lot of outfits to covet, which would work in my closet, including Abbi Jacobson’s print dress complete with a Peter Pan collar at the 6 Balloons premiere.Regina Hall ‘Drinks Well with Others’ at the Support the Girls SXSW premiere. A slogan tee I can get behind.
Mustard yellow and ’70s styling are my weakness. This D’Arcy Carden shoot is fun and also I really want that blouse. Miss you, The Good Place. On the European leg of his tour in Paris, Harry Styles continues to delight in his suit choices, switching out Gucci florals for Saint Laurent sparkles. I screamed with joy when this Advocate cover popped up on my feed. More magazines featuring Natalie Morales and Stephanie Beatriz. Please and thank you.
Comic-Con kicked off yesterday and we have a few looks from panels and events. If Sundance is my favorite winter event when it comes to celeb casual fashion, then SDCC might be my fave summer event. I’ve said it before, but while I love a fancy gown, a more casual environment is what I really look forward to; these are the ones that actually influence what I might wear.
This is a bumper “Out of the Box” as Disney gave us a star-studded pattern extravaganza at D23 from the casts of A Wrinkle in Time, Star Wars and those who have voiced Disney princesses over the last 30 years.
Patterns continue at the Valerian premiere and magazines continue to crush the excellent cover/editorial game. One of the most exciting things to come out of D23 was the new trailer for A Wrinkle in Time and everyone looks fabulous. Coordinated without being matchy matchy and delivering on daytime looks to applaud. The trailer is also a costume design lovers dream.
Ava DuVernay gives both bold print dress in Prada and fabulous pumps, super summery Isabel Marant for Reese Witherspoon, Oprah is delivering on fancy office vibes/I want those glasses and the best outfit from the ladies comes courtesy of Storm Reid in a Chloe pinafore frock and striped blouse.
In the all-important matter of the Chris List, Pine has been top of mine since Wet Hot American Summer and the salt and pepper beard he’s working, cements that position. This Hokusaï wave print Sandro shirt is fabulous and I would very much like the sweatshirt version. And shopping the men’s section during the sales is how I end up with so many excellent striped t-shirts.The Force Awakenspress tour is a major highlight from the recent slew of blockbuster franchises with a big cast; it was both fun and everyone looked great. It wasn’t about playing it safe and the fashion choices were never boring.
New cast additions include Queen Laura Dern – who along with Nicole Kidman is having A YEAR – and Kelly Marie Tran. Tran’s first Star Wars related appearance a couple of months ago had us hailing her as one to look out for and she does not disappoint once again. Laura Dern’s frock is giving me some ’70s feelings and it will not shock you when I say that I love it.
The new behind the scenes footage released at D23 is delightful and emotional; it is safe to say the room got a little dusty when I watched it. Regular readers will know how I feel about ladysuits and Gwendoline Christie so this right in my wheelhouse. It looks great in motion and everything about this soothes me. I still miss Selfie and can’t help but think of this wonderful and underappreciated show whenever Karen Gillan appears on this site. What I love about this look is the Miu Miu frock is nearing the maybe too fancy for this event end, but is balanced with understated hair and makeup.
Eliza would probably have something to say about this. The shoes she would approve of. I am a fan of all of this. The new Wreck-It Ralph movie gave Disney a reason to celebrate the women who have voiced princesses over the last 30 plus years. Princess is not defined by who wears a crown.
So much color and pattern! Here is the full line-up from left to right:
Paige O’Hara (Belle – Beauty and the Beast), Irene Bedard (Pocahontas), Mandy Moore (Rapunzel – Tangled), Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Sarah Silverman (Vanellope von Schweetz – Wreck-It Ralph), Kristen Bell (Anna – Frozen), Kelly Macdonald (Merida – Brave), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana – The Princess and the Frog), Linda Larkin (Jasmin – Aladdin), and Jodi Benson (Ariel – The Little Mermaid). Kelly Macdonald’s simple blouse paired with a floral skirt is giving all the heart eyed emoji reactions. It is low-key and yet super stylish. Perfect for this event. Great lipstick too. I’ve listened to the Moana soundtrack while writing on numerous occasions and Auli’i Cravalho’s voice is an instant pick me up. This is like the photo version of that. And I very much want to grab a cocktail with Anika Noni Rose.Timeless is alive – much to my delight – and Abigail Spencer pattern clashes in a floral frock with leopard print pumps. I wholeheartedly approve.Lots of short shorts and heels at SDCC and Daredevil’s Élodie Yung is giving me starry short sleeve sweater envy. The choppy bob looks great on her. One problem with panel fashion is not getting a full body shot. TV Ate My Wardrobe style queen, Aubrey Plaza is also opting for shorts and giving great two-toned levels of purple. This reminds me that half a season of Legion is still sitting on my DVR unwatched. At the Valerian premiere Natalie Morales – star of another gone to soon sitcom, oh hey Trophy Wife – is another vision, in a textured pattern Rivini. So many different purple shades this week and the berry sandals are perfect for this frock.Interview Magazine continues to be good to us and Tatiana Maslany chats with Uzo Aduba about playing multiple characters on Orphan Black including one of my favorite things this show does; when one clone plays another. About this Maslany explains:
“Those moments are the greatest joy. I get to play with all of the things that we do as people where we see somebody a certain way, we judge somebody, we empathize with something in someone—all of the judgments, good and bad, that we have of people and how that makes us behave. If Sarah is playing Alison, Sarah’s judgments about Alison, the impression that she gets and the impersonation that she does. I like playing with the artifice of it and letting the mistakes and the cracks seep through.”
The whole interview is wonderful and Aduba is clearly a member of the Clone Club. It is also another great photo shoot from this publication and it is a picture worthy of an art gallery. The above portrait reminds me of a recent Orphan Black costume highlight. Also worthy of a gallery; this whole Ruth Negga velvet themed editorial for The Edit. In the piece she talks about award season campaigns and how she’s taking a break from work. The question of family arises because she’s an actress in her mid-thirties, but it doesn’t come across in the whole grating “can a woman have it all?” kind of way.Ruth Negga is always a red carpet highlight and she gives major props to her stylist, Karla Welch saying “She’s a huge feminist, and that was important. I don’t have time to go to the gym, and she dresses my body in a way that’s going to give me confidence. I like a sleeve, I like a high neck, that’s my style.”
As with all shoots from The Edit they produce a handy link to shop all the pieces. Sadly they do not provide the bank balance to pay for them.Gifting us with a fun and super stylish cover is Bustand yes I have strong coat and floral summer dress envy. Fall and summer fashion coming together and Gina Rodriguez is making my heart sing here. Bonus appearance by her pooch, Casper.
We are deep in awards season, TCA has just finished and I’d somehow blanked on just how much happens at the start of the year – Sundance kicked off yesterday and Fashion Month is fast approaching. Critics’ Choice Awards and the Elle Women in TV event gave plenty of style treats, but don’t worry as there are lots of outfit delights below. Plus more early contenders for favorite 2016 magazine covers.
Holly Taylor’s alphabet Nicole Miller NYC mini dress is ideal for the teen star and she’s even making me not hate peep toe booties for maybe the first time ever. A TCA miracle. New Americans artwork and an actual premiere date (March 16) have somehow made anticipation levels even higher. Now if only Taylor’s spy dog suggestion could get written into the show.
TCA panels don’t come with a dress code and you can go from something on the funkier end such as Holly Taylor’s dress to what I would call fancy office wear with Annet Mahendru nailing the latter. Also killing it in the lipstick stakes.
In combining two of my favorite things – sparkles and pleats – Natalie Morales makes me not hate the cropped element. This week is a weird, but this outfit is great.
Kether Donohue is on Grease: Live duty at the Fox TCA party and I love that she has gone full 50s on her outfit. The silhouette and bold floral pattern look really great on her. The only thing I would add is (you guessed it) red lipstick.
Speaking of lip color and Donohue’s You’re the Worst co-star Aya Cash nailed her TCA panel choice and I am always in the bag for Breton stripes. Special shout out to creator Stephen Falk for the polka dot socks which just make it into the shot.
I might be coming down with something because I’m finding Maisie Williams’ floral choker to be rather charming rather than making me break out in teen flashback fashion nightmare sweats – I had some A+ terrible chokers because 90s – and it works with her amazing Mexican wrestler Markus Lupfer dress (which she modeled oh so well on Instagram).
Like Holly Taylor, Maisie Williams is a teen that dresses like a teen and this pleases me immensely. And she won Young Performer of the Year at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards and this reminds me that I still need to watch The Falling.
Also here is Aidan Turner at the National Television Awards reminding me why I should be watching Poldark. Nice knitted tie to go with that smolder face.
Bust continues its run of interesting and fabulous cover stars with our favorite Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams. Everything about this from the styling, makeup and colors used makes Williams standout including pairing a bold lipstick with a bold lip hair clip (that I very much would like it my life).
The interview is where the really good stuff is at and Williams discusses everything from feminism, her upbringing, Angry Black Woman stereotypes, The Daily Show and mental health. It is a very interesting read that goes much deeper than your average magazine profile and this issue of Bust is available on both digital and actual newsstands.
Very much in the can for everything Brie Larson and after seeing Room this week I would be thrilled to see her win the Oscar. The conversation around this year’s Academy Awards is more about who hasn’t been nominated and after last year’s disappointing selection of all white acting nominees (seriously how did David Oyelowo not get nominated for Selma?) for it to happen two years in a row is disheartening/anger inducing – I also saw Creed this week and Michael B. Jordan’s performance is definitely Oscar worthy. Larson herself points to this discussion when she posted this cover on her Instagram and the voting body is not going to be able ignore the dissatisfaction when it is all anyone wants to talk about.
As far as the cover goes, it is simple and striking but don’t make bodies and their popper crotches a thing again please. The interview is engaging and Larson comes across really well. The interviewer does not when she lists the things Larson did not want to go into detail about and it just feels like a bit of dick move to bring it up in the way she does. I’m looking forward to seeing everything Larson does next and I really don’t care what she ate during this chat.
