Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Nov

Award season is truly here and both the Oscars and the Golden Globes hosted pre-nominations fancy shindigs in the last week. The latter was awash with color and pattern; if you want to see Armie Hammer in florals head here.

Botanics also make an appearance here and if these red carpets are anything to go by then we’re in for a treat come January. The second week in a row where I have kicked things off with Zoe Kazan and another stunning ensemble. At the Governors Awards, Kazan wore an ethereal Prada gown. This is something I have noted on a number of occasions, but one thing I love about Zoe Kazan is that she always mentions and credits her stylist Leith Clark when posting about these events on social media. The team effort that goes into the red carpet part of this business has really been made visible thanks to platforms like Instagram and Twitter.

Also I appreciate Kazan answering my lipstick related query and putting me in touch with her makeup artist Kirin Bhatty on Twitter. Because I am still preoccupied with a question from the early days of this blog.Ditching Dior for Alexander McQueen and this is my favorite Jennifer Lawrence look in an age. This is telling with regards to that Dior deal. Although I do find myself drawn to the print ads Lawrence does for the brand. It just doesn’t translate on the red carpet.Sarah Paulson is serving up witchy glam in Miu Miu and a berry lip. Reader, I am here for it.Tessa Thompson’s rainbow pleated dream from the Emmys is definitely one of 2017’s best gowns and while this Altuzarra doesn’t hit that mark, it is a beautiful gown and looks like a tapestry that would normally hang in a fancy manor house/castle/palace.

Michelle Williams was at the Governors Awards while Busy Philipps attended the Baby2Baby fundraiser on Saturday night. Later they found each other and news that will not shock you, I yelped with delight when this photo popped up on my Insta feed. See also when Michelle made an appearance in Busy’s Saturday night Stories. Serena Williams has had a very busy week; she attended Glamour’s 2017 Women of The Year Awards and looked stunning in a Versace mini-dress. Then she got married yesterday to Alexis Ohanian in New Orleans. And I cannot wait to see the photos. The party favors alone are incredible. Congratulations! Zazie Beetz puts a really fun spin on the ladysuit trend. I now want to see her starring in a 1920s-set vehicle. Mr. Robot has got really good again and while season 2 was hit and miss, the women were super compelling. Portia Doubleday’s ability to switch from super steely to eyeliner smudged shakiness has been a pleasure to watch. On the show I am enamored with her high-neck white blouses, but it good to see an injection of color IRL. And I am a sucker for all things pleated skirts. This Dolce & Gabbana dress feels like the embodiment of the design aesthetic from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet and Anne Hathaway looks great in it.Dior sponsored the Guggenheim International Gala Pre-Party and Rebecca Hall escapes all things sheer that this brand has been indulging in recently. I do appreciate a tuxedo inspired frock and the star ankle boots are a strong contender for the covet list.

I saw Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman at the weekend and Hall gave a blistering performance (as she always does) in a film that I thoroughly enjoyed. There was a high level of drooling over Donna Maloney’s costume design—especially the jackets—and that both Wonder Woman featuring movies (not including Justice League in this) were directed by women, warms my soul.

The Get Out cast is working the pre-nominations circuit and it would please me no end if this movie was to get recognized. Allison Williams notes that there was some accidental outfit coordinating with co-star Daniel Kaluuya. Both are crushing it on the stripes front. GRETA! This Bust cover is every heart emoji.

❤ ❤ ❤

Feeling all the things.
It does look like the #OscarsSoWhite tag will sadly not be retired if this Hollywood Reporter cover is anything to go by and Mary J. Blige gets put to the side of all the group shots. Optics wise it is hard not to notice.

The interview itself gets to the heart of the topic that has dominated entertainment news for the last six weeks and they don’t back away from the conversation. It is important and a topic that will surely be the first question on any of these roundtables going forward.

As a headline, this one is striking and the extract below gets to the heart of the ‘difficult actress’ label:

LAWRENCE Sometimes — I’ve had this happen: I finally made the decision to stand up for myself, and then I went to go to the bathroom at work and one of the producers stopped me and was like, “You know, we can hear you on the microphone, you’ve been really unruly.” Which was not true, but basically my job was threatened because the director said something fucked up to me and I said, “That’s sick, you can’t talk to me like that,” and then I was punished, and I got afraid that I wasn’t going to be hired again.

STONE Yeah, you were “difficult.”

LAWRENCE Yeah, I was called difficult and a nightmare. I think a lot of people aren’t coming forward because they’re afraid they’re not going to work again. You need to be able to say, “This is wrong” and have somebody do something about it instead of saying, “Oh, it’s wrong? Well, you’re fired.”

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

21 Apr

Bold print and florals dominate this week’s best style moments and despite the grey sky view I’m currently being treated to, it feels good to know spring has sprung. Fashion seems to agree and it is print central here at TV Ate My Wardrobe.

There’s a lot of different projects on the promotion train including smaller indie fare and probably the most anticipated blockbuster of the year. The latter being a franchise that sartorially delivered on its world tour two years ago. Plus all things TV including the premiere of HBO’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave that is appearing on two shows at the moment. Plus a couple of fabulous Time covers and some TV stars at Coachella, because of course. While promoting Colossal – a film I’m very excited for – Anne Hathaway wore this very lovely floral frock to Good Morning America and it didn’t come from a high end store/designer as you might expect. Hathaway explained that she is trying to be more sustainable with her fashion choices and wear vintage when she can; this $15 flea market find is an excellent start. The Star Wars celebration included a panel for The Last Jedi where they unveiled the new stunning teaser poster, a teaser trailer and a new cast member; Kelly Marie Tran is joining the Resistance and will play mechanic Rose.

Because this event was streamed worldwide it meant we got to see just how delightful Tran is and because you know I love good panel attire I was thrilled to see this mix of casual with dressy. A dress that infuses frills and layering in stunning cobalt with stacked sparkly shoes already puts Kelly Marie Tran on the Star Wars promo tour style list.Daisy Ridley is no longer the newcomer and she’s still making daring fashion choices including this block color orange and red Stella McCartney number, which I’m sure shouldn’t work but does. Tony Award winning Hamilton star and long suffering Good Wife ASA, Renée Elise Goldsberry is starring in the HBO movie The Immortal Life as Henrietta Lacks, which airs tomorrow (Saturday 22). At the premiere she looked stunning in bold Rosie Assoulin floral dress and while I’m not wild about the puffy shoulder detail it doesn’t detract from the rest of the ensemble. Great shoe choice too.

Everything about Rose Byrne’s look on Live with Kelly (and on this occasion Jussie) is ideal as she also chats about The Immortal Life as Henrietta Lacks from the polka dots to the lipstick. Also Kelly Ripa frock is hitting all those spring notes and I would very much like it please. Coachella time and scrolling through the endless shorts and bad boot choices there are a couple of outfits that stood out for the right reasons. There’s something a little 80s and couch material about Yara Shahidi’s floral take, but she looks good and my only concern is she might be a little on the toasty side for daytime desert wearing.Sophie Turner leans more edgy in a very festival way and it is working for her and I love a star print tee. Even if I’m having Ross Geller in super tight leather pants concerns for Sophie when she goes to the bathroom because the toilet situation can be perilous at these kind of outdoor events (though probs not for the celebs attending).

More treats from the Elisabeth Moss hangs out in corridors in fabulous clothes series in a stunning green floral Prabal Gurung number.Armie Hammer takes a dip in the Rami Malek shirt box at the Free Fire premiere and it looks great on him. There is also talk of a Man From U.N.C.L.E. sequel and make it happen Hollywood.Carrie Coon is having a moment or rather two moments with The Leftovers and Fargo both returning this week and I am quite prepared to be devastated by her performance as Nora Durst. Giving great short hair and stripe styling for Backstage where she discusses in depth both her stage and screen career. Throw all these Carrie Coon profiles at me.Time’s 100 Most Influential annual issue list was unveiled yesterday and while there are some questionable choices I am instead going to focus on the covers that fill me with joy. Starting with this great Viola Davis shot and the perfect Mary Katrantzou to make her stand out even more. As with the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, Meryl Streep delivers on the Viola Davis testimony she deserves. Riz Ahmed has graced the red carpet Best of lists on numerous occasions recently and this is another case of a fantastic suit; great color palette choice from the Time team. Words by Lin-Manuel Miranda so enthusiasm levels are high. Just like they should be.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 Jan

Continuing our Sundance fashion love-in with more knitwear, boots and coat treats for you to scroll through. Plus awards season keeps on keeping on, the American Crime Story red carpet delivers and another fantastic magazine cover has been unveiled. Jenna MaloneJena Malone is slaying at the Lovesong premiere in matching black and white checks in an outfit that looks super chic and cozy at the same time. Topping things off with killer red lips and boots.Maya RudolphGoing slightly more casual with checks is Maya Rudolph at the Mr Pig premiere also earning those all important red lipstick points. Sundance continues to be my fave for all things that I might actually have in my wardrobe. Elisabeth MossSparkly jumper dress, black tights and boots for Elisabeth Moss at the premiere for The Free World is the glitzy form of red carpet attire here; count me all in.Elisabeth Moss SundanceThis is just the best combination of all the things I love from Elisabeth Moss out and about at Sundance. My only concern is the lack of gloves. This calls for a good pair of fingerless chunky knits or some Carol inspired leather ones.Tegan and SaraMore Sundance red carpet excellence from Tegan and Sara with hints of #LadySuitWatch2016 on display at The Intervention premiere. Tegan’s grey boots are high on my covet list.Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuvallAll the 90s teen movie feelings are being felt as a result of The Intervention red carpet. Also boosted by Natasha Lyonne’s sweater looking like a black version of the dog on the “Odelay” cover.America FerreraPolka dots pretty (plus pockets!) for America Ferrera at the Producers Guild Awards and this Alexia Maria dress is ticking all our boxes. Ferrera has been a regular on TV Ate My Wardrobe over this busy red carpet season and she recently pointed out she is currently living in a world of clothing extremes.Anne HathawayFirst of all let’s ditch any kind of headlines that refer to a baby bump as if it is an accessory that can be removed at will (see every DM headline ever – i.e. “[insert pregnant celeb] takes baby bump to x”). Secondly the whole “unveiling their baby bump” nonsense can also go. So here is Anne Hathaway wearing a very cute Marc Jacobs dress and yes she looks radiant, but she always tends to pregnancy or not. *end of rant*Blackish kidsThe kids from Black-ish continue their style domination at the NAACP Awards Nominees’ Luncheon this week. And I still really need to get caught up on this show.Aya CashAya Cash was early to #LadySuitWatch2016 and she is keeping a solid jacket game in this gold lame number on the red carpet for The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story (a show that is very high on my most anticipated list). As someone who isn’t in the cast this is ideal attire as it is super cool without being too showy.Angel ParkerAngel Parker is playing attorney Shawn Chapman – part of OJ’s Dream Team – and she’s paired a bold red dress with an excellent array of accessories from silver pumps to a mirrored clutch (which looks a lot like this Viola Davis one). Also those all important red lipstick points.Sarah PaulsonSarah Paulson has been killing it on the red carpet of late and this is another triumph (even if as Samantha Powell mentions this Stella McCartney dress was everywhere in 2012). Such a good color.Amanda PeetAmanda Peet’s look wouldn’t be out of place in the top half of this post and as with Aya Cash this is the ideal kind of outfit for someone who is not in the project. Sweater, lipstick and casually slung coat over the shoulder yeses all around.Jussie SmollettOne of my favorite magazine covers of recent years was from Out and this Jussie Smollet shot is another case of letting a strong image do all the talking. In the interview he lays it all out including this:

“God, I’ve never had to talk about this, so I’m trying to find the words. If I had to label myself, I would label myself as a gay man. With that said, I believe that love is the only thing that matters, and I would hope that anybody would leave themselves open — not to gender, but to love. I would hope that people would not close themselves off from what could be if, lo and behold, you meet somebody that just sweeps you off your feet, and you just can’t do anything about it. If we truly believe that we are born this way, then why do we try to stifle the way we were born? If I fall in love down the road with a woman, I’m going to love that woman.”

It is worth checking out the full interview here and there are also more dreamy pictures from the editorial waiting.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

12 Nov

Master of None was how I spent my weekend and there’s a whole bunch of photos from this show on this week’s TV Instagram round-up including one that hit me right in the feels. Plus plenty of other set shenanigans from shows like ElementaryJane the Virgin and the forthcoming Legends of Tomorrow.

Future excellent Good Wife guest star and excellent Lucca Quinn outfit ahoy.

The excellent Master of None is definitely a family affair with Aziz Ansari’s parents playing his parents on the show and his brother Aniz collaborated on the writing end. I am now in a post marathoning funk.

My dad took off most of his vacation time for the year to act in Master of None. So I'm really relieved this all worked out. Tonight after we did Colbert together he said: "This is all fun and I liked acting in the show, but I really just did it so I could spend more time with you." I almost instantly collapsed into tears at the thought of how much this person cares about me and took care of me and gave me everything to give me the amazing life I have. I felt like a total piece of garbage for all the times I haven't visited my parents and told them I wanted to stay in New York cause I'd get bored in SC. I'm an incredibly lucky person and many of you are as well. Not to beat a dead horse here and sorry if this is cheesy or too sentimental but if your parents are good to you too, just go do something nice for them. I bet they care and love you more than you realize. I've been overwhelmed by the response to the Parents episode of our show. What's strange is doing that episode and working with my parents has increased the quality of my relationship to my parents IN MY REAL LIFE. In reality, I haven't always had the best, most open relationship with my parents because we are weirdly closed off emotionally sometimes. But we are getting better. And if you have something like that with your family – I urge you to work at it and get better because these are special people in your life and I get terrified when my dad tells me about friends of his, people close to his age, that are having serious health issues, etc. Enjoy and love these people while you can. Anyway, this show and my experiences with my parents while working on it have been very important in many ways and I thank for you the part you all have played in it.

And now things are getting a little misty up in here.

I mentioned this a couple of days ago, but I really hope there is more Shannon in season 2 because Danielle Brooks killed it as Dev’s agent.

And you should definitely Treat Yo Self.

Mostly I just want an excuse to talk about how incredible Regina King is on The Leftovers this week (and every week) and the questionnaire scene with Carrie Coon is jaw-droppingly good. Powerhouse performances from both women and I am still thinking about it.

The cast of The Americans has just as much fun with the disguises as I do writing about them.

More from The Americans season 4 table reads and is that Dylan Baker I spy sitting there?

Scream Queens is pretty patchy; one person who has been consistently brilliant throughout is Glen Powell and he really can work a golf bro ensemble.

I want to see which character comes next in this chain. Maybe Andy Sachs.

Fake rain or real rain on Legends of Tomorrow? I will be very glad when this show starts because a) more Victor Garber on TV and b) Arrow and The Flash can go back to focusing on their own storylines rather than setting up the spinoff.

Elementary made a very welcome return last week and I am as happy as Lucy Liu and Aidan Quinn are delightful in this Jonny Lee Miller snapped shot.

I still need to watch last week’s episode and so I’m reading the look on Viola Davis’ face as one that is questioning my viewing choices.

Best of the 2015 Met Gala – Part 2

5 May

This year the Met Gala is celebrating the Costume Institute’s “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition which opens this week. It is a theme that could be either misinterpreted or rather take a big chunk of cultural appropriation and while some went very close to the line as is often the case with the Met Gala the theme was only hinted at – remember how very un-punk a lot of attendees were last year?

Here is Part 2 of our ‘Best of’ rundown (head here for Part 1) and while a lot of these dresses could work on any fancy pants red carpet event there are still a couple of ensembles which embrace the Met Gala costume dream.

RihannaKicking off the second part with the most dramatic entrance of the night and Rihanna achieves regal cape gown perfection in yellow Guo Pei – moving beyond the ‘inspired by Chinese heritage by wearing something by a Chinese designer – and the wide staircase shot shows off this incredible moment.

Allison WilliamsWhen I first saw Allison Williams in Giambattista Valli Couture I was struck by how it was so Allison Williams and yet at the same time it moves away from her wheelhouse. This might be her best red carpet look to date and in a sea of scarlet frocks it is one which really stands out.

Rose ByrneRose Byrne wears one of the most interesting looks of the night in leather custom Calvin Klein collection. While once again I can’t see a whole lot of the theme in this; the circular cut outs and overall detail is spectacular.

Amal ClooneyAnother gown which explores the theme through texture with a military inspiration in the design of Amal Clooney’s Maison Margiela bodice. Mixing this with a layered skirt and one which evokes flowers adds to the outstanding quality of this dress.

Anne HathawayThere were a whole lot of Star Wars references being thrown about when Anne Hathaway arrived, but for me this looks a whole lot like something I wore in 1998 (albeit mine was a silver sleeveless hoodie which I adored). Whatever this Ralph Lauren hooded dress makes you think of, it is clear that Anne Hathaway is working it.

Kate HudsonMore gold and Kate Hudson in Michael Kors is doing her ‘Kate Hudson looks very good on the red carpet’ thing.

Jessica ChastainWoah! Jessica Chastain goes for gold bombshell in Givenchy with super retro curls and bonus red lipstick points. This looks like something Amy Adams might have worn during the American Hustle awards period, which is to say it is smoking hot.

Brie LarsonSo much sparkly beaded detail on Brie Larson’s Dolce & Gabana frock which is one of the more on theme looks of the night. Also very much feeling her gold headband and red lip color.

Taraji P HensonI finally stared Empire (so late to this party I know) and Taraji P. Henson is already giving me so much life as Cookie. Here is Henson in beaded Balenciaga adding to the many floral gowns on offer and she looks pretty damn great.

Diane Kruger and Joshua JacksonDiane Kruger once again shows why she is a magical fashion unicorn as her Chanel Couture ensemble really shouldn’t work and yet she still looks incredible. Joshua Jackson looks rather spiffy and hey here’s the best dressed couple crown.

Maggie GyllenhaalAnother monochrome beauty and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Roland Mouret also has a dash of color to add to the unusual bodice and belting. It’s a dress I could see Nessa Stein from The Honourable Woman wearing.
