Nominees Announced for the 18th Costume Designers Guild Awards

8 Jan

The nominations keep on coming and the Costume Designers Guild Awards are one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s key celebrations of the year because they focus on excellence in costume design covering television, film and short form. Instead of one costume design category where period tends to reign supreme these TV and film awards are split into three separate groupings giving contemporary, period and fantasy their chance to shine. The awards will take place Tuesday, February 23 in a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and if it is anything like last year then it will be a very glamorous affair.

We’re going to discuss who has been nominated and the names of those we would also have loved to see get recognized. Plus a fun treat at the end as I was lucky enough to get to see one nominee’s creations up close last year and now is the perfect time to share those photos.

Last year fantasy and period costuming were grouped together when it came to the TV nominees and mini-series/made for TV movie took up the third space. Splitting fantasy and period makes so much sense to me giving a broader scope especially when considering the volume and quality of period shows. Sleepy Hollow does have two nominations in fantasy because there have been two different costume designers (Kristin M. Burke and Mairi Chisholm) at the helm over this voting period and it is about time that this show got some recognition for the incredible collection of contemporary, period and monster attire. The other standout and the show to beat is Game of Thrones and as this is Michele Clapton’s final season this also gives her an added boost.

The period category is where a lot of the big hitters are including Janie Bryant and Tiffany White Stanton for Mad Men’s last hurrah (and another excuse to post a photo of my overall costuming highlight from 2015), Masters of Sex wobbled this year story wise, but the costuming didn’t dip in quality and The Knick is just as mesmerizing from a wardrobe point of view as it is from the way it is lit (and anyone who reads my Twitter feed knows how much I love the lighting). I still need to watch Outlander (I know) and while I couldn’t get on with Penny Dreadful it is easy to see why it has been nominated.

As far as shows I would love to see get recognized when it comes to period attire The Americans is top of that list as Jenny Gering managed once again to weave the spy wear with the at home styling so effortlessly and in a way which really informs the story without feeling like an anthology of everything 80s. Fargo is the other one I am disappointed to see not on the list as Carol Case produced some exceptional work. The same can be said about Giovanna Melton’s work on Agent Carter and this is one of the many examples of a show which could easily straddle two different categories as it can also be counted as a fantasy.

The biggest disappointment for me personally comes in the contemporary offerings and while they are all solid choices – American Horror Story: Hotel is another one which could be defined as more than one genre – I can’t help but feel Christopher Hargadon has been sorely overlooked for his work on Hannibal. Comedy has also been mostly ignored and there are plenty of sitcoms, half hours and those hard to define shows like Orange is the New Black missing out with only Transparent taking up that space. Jenn Rogien for Girls and OITNB, Broad City’s Staci Greenbaum, Wendy Benbrook for You’re the Worst and The Mindy Project’s pattern clashing king Salvador Perez are a few of the comedy options who I would have liked to see up for this award.

Moving on to the film options; Joy and The Danish Girl are two films I watched this week and while I didn’t love either one the costuming is a high point in both. I’m also really pleased to see The Martian up for an award as I’m still thinking about the various pieces of NASA apparel, plus the actual space suits and everything back on earth. It’s no surprise seeing either Carol or Brooklyn in the period category (both of which received a BAFTA nomination this morning) and I’ve been pretty obsessed with all things Carol since I saw it in November.

Fantasy is what really excites me film wise this year especially as most of these will sadly not cross over into Oscars territory; although much to my delight Mad Max is up for a BAFTA. Once again Kurt and Bart delivered big on The Hunger Games even if this one is less decadent and grimier than the other installments. When I saw Star Wars for the second time this week I was once again struck by costume details from Rey’s long gloves on top of gloves to Kylo Ren’s cape and there is so much going on that informs character. Ex-Machina is the little movie that could and yeah I think this is a good time to post this gif showcasing some of the simple, but super effective dancing attire.

Sandy Powell is a double nominee (both here and at the BAFTAs) for two Cate Blanchett movies (Carol and Cinderella) and while I haven’t watched Cinderella I was lucky enough to see the costumes up close and personal at an exhibition in London last March and you can see the photos from that in the gallery below.

Plenty of Insta gifts both holiday themed and general behind the scenes delights including many happy memories, magazine covers, newcomers and style inspiration.

Everything about this is perfect.

Everything about this is perfect (Part II).

Another Throwback Thursday treat with Justin Theroux looking far from Kevin Garvey and Amy Sedaris killing as per usual.

I’ve fallen behind on The Mindy Project, but what I’ve heard about the most recent episodes has got me intrigued. And of course there is always the pattern clashing joy from Mindy’s costuming as an added bonus.

Things did not end well for Lady on Game of Thrones, but luckily life does not imitate life and Sophie Turner adopted Zunni when Lady’s part came to an end. Someone seems pretty happy to see Santa.

As “Out of the Box”  is going to be an end of year Best Of for the next two weeks I didn’t want to miss out on this Broad City fashion mag cover joy, so thank you Broad City Insta for posting their Flare shot.

More Stephanie Beatriz glasses to covet.

Another Instagram newcomer and Will Forte went with the JJ Abrams lens flare option showcasing both his epic beardiness and Mary Steenburgen.

Oh to be in New York so I could go see Oh, Hello.

Gil and George not only got a stellar New York Times review, but they also had a very handsome guest come to their show.

Now entering the Jane the Virgin portion this week and this cast continues to be one of the most active on Instagram. First up Brett Dier sharing a festive message/picture.

These two don’t spend a whole lot of time on screen together, but the writers should definitely make this happen as it will probably be magical.

And I am so here for this.

From one prolific Instagram using cast to another and this friendship appears to be just as close off screen as well as on.

More frames inspiration. Plus #FriendshipGoals.

And because I guess it is the most on point hashtag for this SNL sketch #SquadGoals.

Kirsten Dunst posted this to Twitter and it not only perfectly showcases everything that I love about Peggy’s costuming, but it also looks like it could be from 1979. Got to love a filter.

Best of TV 2015: The Music Monday Edition – You’re the Worst

14 Dec

Costumes are not the only thing we are celebrating from this year in television and there have been plenty of incredible music infused moments. A lot of these have come in the final minutes of an episode with a song nailing the emotional pitch of a last scene. One such striking track use comes in the third episode of Orange is the New Black with the Dum Dum Girls “Coming Down” playing over one character’s devastating descent; further adding to the despair felt by these character and the glassy eye reaction from me.

HBO shows tend to be experts at the end credit music choices with GirlsLookingTogetherness and The Leftovers (Simon & Garfunkel featured here as well as in hotel karaoke) delivering fantastic selections. This includes both songs I already hold close to me – “This is the Day” by The The – and ones I had never heard before like Lily & Madeleine; Spotify tells me they are one of my most listened to bands this year and that is all because of Togetherness. There is also my favorite end credits sing along moment that came courtesy of Mad Men and the use of “Space Oddity.”

There is one show that consistently had me reaching for the rewind button and my phone to Shazam the end track week in, week out and that is You’re the Worst. Sometimes it would be after I stopped laughing, but more often than not I had to wait to stop crying and uncurl myself from the ball I found myself in. Yep this season has still been hilarious, but it also did some incredible things on an entirely different emotional level and quite often these came in the closing moments.
You're the WorstThe first indicator that all is not well comes at the end of episode 4 as Gretchen drives off in the night to destinations unknown (at this point), but the manner in which she does it and Torres’ “New Skin” point to something much bigger. At the time I referred to it as a gut punch of a moment and it still remains this way; knowing where Gretchen was going only adds to this sentiment and it is one of the most emotionally affecting scenes on television this year.

When we discover where Gretchen has been going – to cry in her car while playing Snake – and Jimmy responds with relief that she’s not cheating on him the song by Still Corners is a dreamy like affair as he walks away smiling and she returns to sobbing. It is somewhat emotionally surreal and wouldn’t sound out of place on a Sofia Coppola soundtrack.

By episode 9 Gretchen’s depression has hit new levels and Jimmy is so oblivious to her Claire Danes level of scrunched up face despair his dialogue gets slowly muffled as the music gets louder; like an alternate less murdery take on Simon & Garfunkel’s “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night.” What about when Jimmy stays? In between my sobs which mirror Gretchen’s and then my laughter that immediately follows Lindsay’s utterance of “farts” this Siskiyou track feels like a joyous warm blanket.

Sadly there is no “New Phone Who Dis?” on either Spotify or the end credits, but this is also one of my TV music highlights of the year. I am also waiting for the perfect time to respond to a text with this line.

So thank you You’re the Worst for all the new bands you have introduced me to and for ending each episode in ways which deliver such an emotional response. I’m sure regular TV Ate My Wardrobe readers will know how much I relish a good misty eye moment.

And for your listening enjoyment here is a complete playlist of the You’re the Worst season 2 end credits music.

Stay tuned for more Best of 2015 posts!

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

9 Dec

News faces to the TV Instagram world, plus plenty of finales, shows to catch up on and behind the scenes action in this week’s collection. Film Insta is also making an appearance with fabulous outfits, singing and selfie sticks.

Look who joined Instagram this week! And he’s already been on a posting blaze including this very muddy looking shot from The Leftovers. Those jeans are going to feel mighty crunchy.

It hasn’t been easy for Kevin Garvey this season on The Leftovers in the getting covered in substances department and there has also been plenty of blood, sweat and tears (and snot). Luckily it is all smiles behind the camera. Delighted to see the all important aviators making an appearance.

All fun and games for the Dickie Dollar Scholars on Scream Queens and I don’t have any opinions on the finale/killer reveal yet as I won’t be watching it until later. I don’t have high hopes tbh as the season in general has been pretty patchy, but Glen Powell is the gift that keeps on giving.

Same goes for Nasim Pedrad who looks rather chipper for a dinner picture.

https://www.instagram.com/p/_AtkMFv41N/?taken-by=mrjakejohnson

Now for a very different setting and outfit for Nasim Pedrad as she will be back on New Girl this season.

An accurate representation of the face I would make if I ever ran into either Stephen Colbert or Gina Rodriguez.

Finding this whole thing very adorable. And maybe shipping Petra and Raphael as a result.

Getting the gang back together on Arrow. Although one very important person is missing.

https://www.instagram.com/p/_CyZaWgVEn/?taken-by=grantgust

How to blend your regular wardrobe with your superhero attire – Flash style.

The main reason I am excited for Grease: Live. Also – Happy You’re the Worst Season Finale Day!

https://www.instagram.com/p/-2DywyJQ3W/?taken-by=mindykaling

Super cute casual outfit from Mindy Kaling and I am so behind on the Mindy Project. The theme of this month is realizing that the festive season will hopefully be a good time to catch up on all the TV (when I’ve done everything else first).

Never getting bored of Looking group shots.

These are some very Jessica Jones looking jeans (of which I have many feelings about) and unlike last week I have managed to watch a whole bunch of episodes. SO many yell out loud HOLY SHIT moments and I still have 2 episodes to go.

I guess this is what happens on set when there are beds to lie down on.

Agents of SHIELD costume designer Ann Foley took over the Costume Designers Guild official Instagram this week and there’s plenty of behind the scenes action including the cast and those who make the costumes. Would highly recommend checking it out.

https://www.instagram.com/p/_ErzgcnuRu/

Gonna end things with some film Insta highlights this week as the Star Wars press tour cranks up a gear and these two beauties work leather and quilted jackets with aplomb.

https://www.instagram.com/p/-5gkvBlE6r/?taken-by=daisyridley

Okay so this song has super creepy connotations, but Daisy Ridley’s hashtag says it all when it comes to Oscar Isaac singing.

And while I am have mixed feelings about selfie sticks this is pretty darn adorable.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

2 Dec

Lots of behind the scenes love included in this week’s TV Insta selection. Plus big hair, knitwear, grocery tips and some leftover Thanksgiving fun. Enjoy!

The Leftovers continues to be one of the best things on TV this year and the Meg-centric penultimate episode gave this character depth that was maybe missing last season. Here is Liv Tyler taking in the wonderful sites of Jarden, Texas (or probably Austin) in a super cute outfit.

Happy You’re the Worst Day! And while we’re on the subject of penultimate episodes here is another and I just remembered what Jimmy did at the end of the last one. Oh, Jimmy.

Confession – I am still at the same point with Jessica Jones as I was when I wrote this column last week (episode 5) and it is not because I don’t want to watch more, but more like time has got away from me. Regardless, I am still all in on this pairing and photos like this only make me want to marathon the rest of those episodes.

Much love on the set of Orange is the New Black.

A lot has been written about the amazing collection of wigs on The Americans, but the hair department also needs a shout out for this major volume and waves magic on Poor Martha herself. I love that Alison Wright has also adopted this name for her character.

While we’re on the subject of The Americans and hair; here is Holly Taylor showing off her own impressive wavy locks (it runs in this spy family) and like Gretchen Wieners she keeps her secrets in her hair. From the look on her face in this shot it doesn’t look like things are getting any easier for Paige Jennings in season 4.

Getting a different perspective on Jane the Virgin and it can’t be long before Petra is ready to give birth to her twins if this is any indicator. The way this season has dealt with the passage of time has been beneficial so far and avoids the repetition of some story points (there are some that can’t be avoided it would seem when it comes to the central love triangle).

Good Wife group shot from this week’s episode and I am still very much all about Lucca Quinn’s styling. Now to find more out about her character and whether there will be more than dancing with Cary.

Knitwear and the ladies from Girls. I would love to see more from them as a group this season instead of their own separate adventures; however I’m not so sure it would make that much sense for them to be hanging out by now.

For anyone wondering where Robyn is.

Definitely ready for awards circuit domination from this pair.

Alison Pill’s fantastic kitty cat sunglasses would not look out of place on GirlsBroad City or Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Gina would look great in a pair).

https://www.instagram.com/p/-uF9B7uqal/?taken-by=jennyslate

Grocery shopping tips from Jenny Slate and not only does this all sound delicious, but the notebook and handwriting make it extra appealing (you should see my scrawled mess of a lists – my stationary is always top notch though).

This cat.

Booze, beach, excellent outerwear and three celebrities that are going to feature on many Best of 2015 lists.

https://www.instagram.com/p/-kFljCCtHn/?taken-by=januaryjones

Rounding things off with a like mother, like daughter onscreen edition and the images chosen by January Jones and Kiernan Shipka to celebrate Thanksgiving.

https://www.instagram.com/p/-kHmMHFLeG/?taken-by=kiernanshipka

Made even more perfect by them picking slightly different moments, split seconds apart from the same scene.

TV to be Thankful For: A Pre-End of Year List (of Sorts)

26 Nov

There is a lot of TV to be watched right now (#PeakTV) and like many I am in the process of compiling end of year lists (and as I have done in previous years I will be doing my ‘best of’ in a variety of ways) while trying to remember everything that I have watched this year. So this is a preview of what is to come in the following month and hopefully it will jog my very full TV related memory of anything I might miss.

So in no particular order here is what I am thankful for when it comes to TV in 2015:

  • The Hollywood Reporter TV Actress roundtable participants look like this and not this.
  • Comedy shows that explore a broad range of topics which not only make me laugh until I cry, but also invoke full on Claire Danes level of cry face. I am mostly looking at you You’re the Worst.
  • While I’m on the subject of comedies that make me misty eyed; Parks and Recreation ended this season on a high with an episode that pivoted on the Six Feet Under model and caused just as many tears.
  • Cable shows are embracing male nudity beyond just butts (special shout-outs to The Leftovers and The Affair) and all this after the The Comeback had a whole episode dedicated to skewering cable on this issue.
  • Everything Valerie Cherish.
  • Everything Abbi and Ilana.
  • “Looking for a Plot.”
  • Teen girls on The Americans avoiding the usual annoying teen trap many other dramas fall foul of.
  • And that every episode is a lesson in tension and an exploration on marriage and identity. It was my number one show in March and it still is in November (spoiler alert).
  • That Agent Carter got a second season and I now own the same lipstick as Peggy Carter.
  • The master class in acting delivered by Carrie Coon and Regina King on The Leftovers and for every insanely wonderful thing this show is doing. Also for Justin Theroux’s ability to look bewildered and devastated at any given opportunity.
  • The Villanueva women.
  • Getting to see Tatiana Maslany take on even more characters and make me forget she is playing everyone in a scene. And this wave.
  • Kroll Show going out on a high and creating this incredible universe where so many characters overlapped and intersected. And because I can’t say “Oh, hello” without wondering if there is too much tuna and I sometimes inadvertently say ‘Ameezing’ like I’m on PubLIZity.
  • The 12 Angry Men episode of Inside Amy Schumer.
  • Rob and Sharon on Catastrophe (even if the amount of things Sharon says that are like me is reaching a worrying level).
  • Shows that take will they/won’t they situations and turn them into yep they will. Oh hey there Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
  • All of Lady Gaga’s costuming on American Horror Story: Hotel.
  • Fargo indulging my love of all things 1970s clothing.
  • Daenerys’ dragon necklace.
  • The brief but amazing turn by Birgitte Hjort Sørensen on Game of Thrones.
  • Kit Harington Hair Watch.
  • Peggy’s cigarette smoking sunglasses strut.
  • Peggy roller skating.
  • The many times Mad Men made me cry.
  • Sally Draper.
  • Watching Felicity with Julie Hammerle and the time travel arc being even better than I imagined.
  • This Entertainment Weekly cover.
  • Master of None using THAT passage from The Bell Jar (which led to more tears – TV has made me cry a lot this year).
  • Jon Stewart’s last Daily Show (more tears).
  • All the incredible music I’ve ‘discovered’ thanks to shows such as GirlsOITNBMaster of NoneLookingYou’re the Worst and Togetherness.
  • No longer having “Drip Drop” stuck in my head.
  • The lighting on The Knick.
  • Oscar Isaac’s mustache/dad jeans and all the Bruce Springsteen used throughout Show Me a Hero. And, how the thought of this show hits me like a gut punch.
  • Every beautiful/fucked up thing they got away with on Hannibal this season.
  • Queen of ladysuits – Alana Bloom.
  • #LadySuitWatch2015
  • Superheroes on TV.
  • Jessica Jones’ leather jacket and her friendship with Trish.
  • Matt Murdock and this balloon.
  • Pre-emptive Mulder and Scully feeeeeeelings.
  • When Sherlock bought Joan the perfect outfit.
  • Every single one of Diane Lockhart’s statement necklaces.
  • Giving Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson more screen time on The Affair.
  • All the wardrobe inspiration from so many shows this year and the always growing Wish List.
  • That I got to talk to three amazing costume designers and write about it.
  • The range in costume design and shows covered on here includes everything from period to contemporary to fantasy; I am thankful there is a vast amount to discuss and get inspired by.
  • Season 2 of Transparent is almost here!

The list is long and there are probably some very obvious things I have missed. I will get mad at myself later, but for now Happy Thanksgiving!

If you’re looking for Thanksgiving episodes to watch maybe take a rewind and watch these offerings from Felicity and Dawson’s Creek.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

19 Nov

Welcome to another “Behind the Insta-Scenes” and this week we have Looking treats, amazing set decorations, some early holiday cheer and an Americans plot suggestion.

This reaction is why I feel comfortable saying – Brie Larson, just like us.

Pushing Daisies is in my permanent rotation of bedtime watching and so I can’t even deal with this photo that Anna Friel posted yesterday tbh.

The boys, the boys. Does this mean no Dom mustache?

I heart Lauren Weedman so much. Now I have a hankering to rewatch “Looking for a Plot.”

Working on a Sunday feelings.

Sarah Steele gives excellent skeptical face and I am always thrilled when she comes to play on The Good Wife. Will Marissa be happy with her father’s mental state of mind this time?

Now all I want is for Paige to pull a Taylor Swift and spill all her secrets in the form of catchy pop songs. Working album title “They’re Russians.” Clues includes in the liner notes. Might spell out ‘Maple Latte’

https://www.instagram.com/p/-CBPo3KsNl/?taken-by=annetmahendru

Annet Mahendru goes on her own top secret mission scouting out Dupont Circle Travel and all their personal touches. The set dressing detail on The Americans is fantastic as is their collection of family photos.

What every Thanksgiving dinner prep needs.

Moving on to the next holiday and a very different location. Scandal is killing it with the set decoration.

And it is Christmas on Jane the Virgin with a double serving of Mateo in a super cute festive outfit.

Meanwhile, also on Jane these guys are trying out another fashion idea.

On New Girl they’re bringing back parka chic. And it is working.

Soon!

Closing things out this week with a mostly smile filled Hunger Games selfie. Amazing lipstick game from JLaw.

Best of the 2015 Glamour Women of the Year Awards

10 Nov

There is not a whole lot of 2015 left and time has a way of flying by as we near those end of year lists (I need to start working on mine) and last night the Glamour Women of the Year Awards were held at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This is always one of my favorites because it celebrates a range of women and achievements and I just feel so darn positive afterwards. For more on this year’s recipients head here.

Viola DavisViola Davis’ daughter dressed up as her mother winning an Emmy for Halloween and it was pretty much the most adorable costume ever. Davis is onto another winner in red and black with some really excellent accessorizing.

Lupita Nyong'oWe’re almost at Star Wars press tour time, which means we are in for a treat with way more Lupita Nyong’o red carpet looks are ahead of us. Going for understated elegance in Jason Wu and working it like a charm while on hand to present Misty Copeland with her award.

Dascha PolancoDascha Polanco is serving up caped excellence and giving amazing face. I think this is her best red carpet look to date.

Danielle BrooksAnother fabulous turn from an Orange is the New Black star with Danielle Brooks in a color blocking delight. Oh hey there pockets! Just to make this even better. Brooks is in Aziz Ansari’s new show Master of None and next season needs more of Dev’s ambitious agent Shannon, who is all about getting that Friends money.

Alex MorganThe whole US Women’s soccer team was honored at the event; deservedly so after their World Cup win and Alex Morgan’s red and purple floral gown is beautiful. More pocket plus points getting dished out.

SerenaSports stars slaying all over the place with Serena Williams demonstrating how to do sheer in a way that doesn’t make me want to weep from boredom.

Victoria and Brooklyn BeckhamThe big trends of the night were red and black; these tend to be in favor this time of year and Victoria Beckham embraced crimson in a dress from her own collection. Well if you are getting honored for your work in fashion then it makes sense to showcase your work. Brooklyn Beckham continues to follow in his father’s footsteps by looking rather dapper all suited up.

Amy, Eve and SelenaMore red and one thing I like about this photo other than the perfect red dress symmetry is how random this grouping is; I am so here for groups of people you don’t expect posing together. Amy Schumer’s red Alexander McQueen is a switch up from the LBDs she’s been sporting recently and I love a flared sleeve. Selena Gomez is mixing sweet with sexy in Valentino and Eve Hewson embraces the 90s with a lipstick Winona would be proud of.

Misty CopelandTurtlenecks are in favor again and Misty Copeland shows how they can be worn in a formal setting like this; playing with this classic look as she picks up her Woman of the Year Award.

Elisabeth MossMore 90s lipstick realness from Elisabeth Moss and she’s hitting the vampy line hard in this velvet and sheer frock. There is a danger of looking too washed out when your hair is this blonde and I’m not feeling the shoes, but 90s nostalgia wins out for me here because I am a sucker for this.

Reese WitherspoonOkay so I’m not crazy about Reese Witherspoon’s Erdem dress – the floral pattern/texture is great, it’s the lace neckline that makes it too fussy – but I love everything about her speech. Reese talks about her acting career and how ambition shouldn’t be a dirty word. She also discusses her production company and the exciting slate they have ahead:

“We have over 25 films in development and three television shows, and they all have female leads of different ages and different races and different jobs. Some are astronauts, some are soldiers, some are scientists, one is even a Supreme Court justice. They’re not just good or bad; they’re bold and hunted and dangerous and triumphant like the real women we meet every single day of our lives.”

The full speech is really inspiring and while I am in danger of sounding corny I do always feel extra motivated after reading about events like this.

Judith Light, Caitlyn Jenner and Cindi LeiveOne final and super fun photo with Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive hanging out with Woman of the Year, Caitlyn Jenner and the always amazing Judith Light. Light presented Jenner with her award and this is another great dress color symmetry shot. I also love that Jenner has taken her shoes off by this point because I am incapable of keeping a pair of heels on all night.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

30 Sep

A whole lot returning shows and soon to be returning shows as the new fall season is here. Which means plenty of social media engagement and this is one bumper “Behind the Insta-Scenes.”

https://instagram.com/p/8N-FbpPqE-/?taken-by=skittishkid

Breaking theme early and let’s start with the photo I can’t even deal with; dudes from Friday Night Lights and an adorable baby.

Empire returned last week and cast viewing parties for the premiere were all the rage.

Taraji P Henson caught the more chaotic side.

And new cast member Marisa Tomei was joined by a few famous friends (and Empire co-creator Lee Daniels).

The HUGE Empire viewing numbers are a good indicator of hype matching the amount of people watching and Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez posted this selfie from the Emmys to celebrate its return.

One more Empire post and this super fierce Cookie in sweats look.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine also returned this week much to our delight (Gina’s sweater game was the human equivalent of the 100 emoji) and this photo from a night shoot is old horror movie reaction fantastic. Stephanie Beatriz is giving glasses frames inspiration.

And she is also killing it on the work snuggie front.

Victor Garber is now on Instagram! So hopefully this means Alias Throwback Thursday posts are coming our way.

Getting a good look at Willa Holland in Thea’s crime fighting costume on Arrow. I have questions relating to the treadmill.

Willa Holland still in her new getup with the Arrow ladies/bad ass bitches.

Rounding out the CW superhero Instas with The Flash’s Danielle Panabaker showing off some heavier bangs for Caitlin and a pair of boots that will probably never be seen on screen.

Moving onto another CW show and Jane the Virgin returns in just under two weeks! That is a very interesting looking table/assortment of drinks and snacks.

More Jane and this time goofing around with snacks. Or recreating that iconic John Locke Lost moment.

Emilia Clarke finally her hands on a Game of Thrones Emmy. Or rather someone’s hand. And that’s what holds her hair in under all of Daenerys’ locks.

While we’re on the subject of Emmy winners.

There’s the posing hard version…

And the ‘they’re just like us’ version.

Bookending this week’s post with another adorable photo.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Emmys

22 Sep

A special Emmys “Behind the Insta-Scenes” with TV stars documenting the whole process from pre-parties, getting ready rituals to the day after.

The Orange is the New Black cast are a regular fixture on this column and they really have the whole Emmy weekend covered; it is good to see this much enthusiasm not just for their show, but the whole experience. For anyone that wants a break from all things Emmys the standard TV Instagram will appear as usual tomorrow.

One fun thing about having so many TV stars in the same place is the random group photos; case in point and Gwendoline Christie looks like a very proud mother.

Sometimes they give us ideas of actors who should star in something together or which shows should do a crossover.

And of course there are reunions that make your heart melt.

Dream Scandal guest stars alert.

Kerry Washington has an extra pair of paws to help her get ready.

Plenty of accessorizes and boob wrangling choices to choose from.

As with many stars who hit the Emmy red carpet Jessica Williams gives a well deserved shout out to her glam squad and this is a really stunning photo.

Coffee is just as vital pre show as it is the day after. Filming an unaware Taraji P. Henson has turned into a bit of a sport.

The same could be said for dancing in the mirror.

Meanwhile some of the Game of Thrones cast were too busy working on the new season to join the party. Now can someone zoom in on the script text and see what it says.

I’m still very firmly on the fence about January Jones’ jumpsuit but her Insta game is always strong.

Yep.

Pretty frocks and stair hanging out; for some reason this is giving me album cover vibes, butt needs more pouting.

Lots of people in this ballroom and the Orange is the New Black cast have not let us down when it comes to capturing every moment.

There were of course lots of winners. And sometimes winners gatecrashing other winners.

Denial is useful and also hilarious.

And sometimes losing just plain sucks.

See Veep really did win a lot and this is either a table of awards or a whole lot of intricate weaponry.

Peter Dinklage has chosen to show off Maisie Williams’ amazing penguin tux clutch instead of his Emmy. I mean his Emmy isn’t dressed this fancy so this is a solid decision.

Uzo Aduba knows how to get the party started in a sea of other pink dresses.

More pink dress glory and I love that these two are besties in real life.

This dress really is a posing dream.

The morning after coffee is also hella important. And sunglasses.

JLaw proving once again why she is fantasy BFF material. Another tick in the box for day after awards show sunglasses.
