Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Nov

A slightly quieter week what with it being Thanksgiving and all, but there are still plenty of end of year awards, talk show appearances and magazine covers delivering sartorial gifts. We’ve got ladysuits, fabulous frocks and a colorful spin on a classic item.

gillian AndersonBam! Gillian Anderson offering up a lesson in how to do simple and striking with a side order of super hot at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

Gwendoline ChristieMore accolades were dished out this week that also involved posing in front of green foliage at the 2015 British Fashion Awards. Gwendoline Christie gives a little taste of what we can expect from the highly anticipated Star Wars press tour killing it in Vivienne Westwood. I maybe bought the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar for this photo alone.

Victoria Beckham#LadySuitWatch2015 is almost at an end – don’t worry there will be a 2016 version – and Victoria Beckham does all black tailored chic at the British Fashion Awards with satin trim and lapels. It doesn’t quite top the leather lapels of Jessica Jones’ blazer in episode 5 of the new Netflix Marvel series of the same name, but runs a close second.

Krysten Ritter ladysuitSpeaking of which here is Jessica Jones herself; Krysten Ritter also entering the ladysuit fray in an impeccable Mugler white ensemble as she exits Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Krysten RitterSame day, different outfit and looking a little more like her Marvel character, except with a colorful twist on the choice of leather jacket.

Uzo Aduba Uptown magazineWhat a great cover shot from Uptown magazine of Uzo Aduba and I love how they’ve opted against the standard run of the mill smile or serious expression choice. The accompanying interview discusses Aduba’s Emmy wins, her very busy year and how she almost quit acting just before she landed Orange is the New Black. I am very glad she didn’t.

Best of the 2015 Glamour Women of the Year Awards

10 Nov

There is not a whole lot of 2015 left and time has a way of flying by as we near those end of year lists (I need to start working on mine) and last night the Glamour Women of the Year Awards were held at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This is always one of my favorites because it celebrates a range of women and achievements and I just feel so darn positive afterwards. For more on this year’s recipients head here.

Viola DavisViola Davis’ daughter dressed up as her mother winning an Emmy for Halloween and it was pretty much the most adorable costume ever. Davis is onto another winner in red and black with some really excellent accessorizing.

Lupita Nyong'oWe’re almost at Star Wars press tour time, which means we are in for a treat with way more Lupita Nyong’o red carpet looks are ahead of us. Going for understated elegance in Jason Wu and working it like a charm while on hand to present Misty Copeland with her award.

Dascha PolancoDascha Polanco is serving up caped excellence and giving amazing face. I think this is her best red carpet look to date.

Danielle BrooksAnother fabulous turn from an Orange is the New Black star with Danielle Brooks in a color blocking delight. Oh hey there pockets! Just to make this even better. Brooks is in Aziz Ansari’s new show Master of None and next season needs more of Dev’s ambitious agent Shannon, who is all about getting that Friends money.

Alex MorganThe whole US Women’s soccer team was honored at the event; deservedly so after their World Cup win and Alex Morgan’s red and purple floral gown is beautiful. More pocket plus points getting dished out.

SerenaSports stars slaying all over the place with Serena Williams demonstrating how to do sheer in a way that doesn’t make me want to weep from boredom.

Victoria and Brooklyn BeckhamThe big trends of the night were red and black; these tend to be in favor this time of year and Victoria Beckham embraced crimson in a dress from her own collection. Well if you are getting honored for your work in fashion then it makes sense to showcase your work. Brooklyn Beckham continues to follow in his father’s footsteps by looking rather dapper all suited up.

Amy, Eve and SelenaMore red and one thing I like about this photo other than the perfect red dress symmetry is how random this grouping is; I am so here for groups of people you don’t expect posing together. Amy Schumer’s red Alexander McQueen is a switch up from the LBDs she’s been sporting recently and I love a flared sleeve. Selena Gomez is mixing sweet with sexy in Valentino and Eve Hewson embraces the 90s with a lipstick Winona would be proud of.

Misty CopelandTurtlenecks are in favor again and Misty Copeland shows how they can be worn in a formal setting like this; playing with this classic look as she picks up her Woman of the Year Award.

Elisabeth MossMore 90s lipstick realness from Elisabeth Moss and she’s hitting the vampy line hard in this velvet and sheer frock. There is a danger of looking too washed out when your hair is this blonde and I’m not feeling the shoes, but 90s nostalgia wins out for me here because I am a sucker for this.

Reese WitherspoonOkay so I’m not crazy about Reese Witherspoon’s Erdem dress – the floral pattern/texture is great, it’s the lace neckline that makes it too fussy – but I love everything about her speech. Reese talks about her acting career and how ambition shouldn’t be a dirty word. She also discusses her production company and the exciting slate they have ahead:

“We have over 25 films in development and three television shows, and they all have female leads of different ages and different races and different jobs. Some are astronauts, some are soldiers, some are scientists, one is even a Supreme Court justice. They’re not just good or bad; they’re bold and hunted and dangerous and triumphant like the real women we meet every single day of our lives.”

The full speech is really inspiring and while I am in danger of sounding corny I do always feel extra motivated after reading about events like this.

Judith Light, Caitlyn Jenner and Cindi LeiveOne final and super fun photo with Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive hanging out with Woman of the Year, Caitlyn Jenner and the always amazing Judith Light. Light presented Jenner with her award and this is another great dress color symmetry shot. I also love that Jenner has taken her shoes off by this point because I am incapable of keeping a pair of heels on all night.

The Wish List: Joan Watson’s Water Color Stunner

14 Mar

Coveting Joan Watson’s Elementary wardrobe occurs often with her incredible mix of silk prints, shift dresses, a-line skirts and one of the strongest boot collections on television. Even Sherlock has got in on the Joan style game with his pretty much perfect outfit gift a few episodes ago. Joan’s clothing palette generally hovers within the neutral circle of white, black and grey; color isn’t entirely absent but her power move tends to be through pattern. In “T-Bone and the Iceman” Joan switches things up with a stunning ensemble bringing in bold elements of color and print.

elementary 3.17 Joan and sherlockA slightly more tailored approach and Joan tends to favor the oversized approach; this outfit is not the best for the messier end of detective work, but she has a good excuse for being this put together as she has come from an awkward lunch with her mother at a fancy restaurant. What I really love about the water color element of this floral print is that it looks slightly different in every shot we see it in.

Elementary 3.17 JoanIt is more of a swirly blur when she is sitting down and matches her anxiety at the difficult conversation she is about to have with her mother regarding her possibly deteriorating mental health. And while I know the snow must be an absolute pain to shoot in, it does also help create incredible vistas such as this one.

elementary 3.17 Joan restaurantWhat this outfit does is make Joan the focal point whether she is in the dark station or in the icy looking (and feeling after her mother ditches her) riverside restaurant location.

Victoria Beckham contrast shirt dress

The Victoria Beckham contrast shirt dress appears to be two separates when it is in fact one combing a silk shirt with a quilted jacquard skirt. Perfect for all those awkward dinners and crime solving deliberations. Joan even throws in a trip to the morgue, but I would maybe advise against that. Or you could even go the Amy Poehler route and wear it to Trinity College in Dublin to receive a Gold Medal of Honorary Patronage from the University’s Philosophy Society. Either way this dress is on the Ultimate Wish List.

New York Fashion Week: 10 Spring 2015 Looks for Mad Men’s Megan Draper

8 Sep

Welcome to the first Fantasy Costuming from this New York Fashion Week showcasing the ready-to-wear looks for Spring 2015. Rather than starting with one designer we are instead going to focus on a variety of collections that would look right at home on Mad Men’s Megan Draper. Of course none of these designs are vintage, instead we wanted to find items that represent Megan’s fashion forward style and how she is always dressed straight out of the pages of Vogue while never coming across as try hard or a fashion victim. The pieces we have chosen have some elements of how we saw her last season as she attempts to live out her acting dream in LA so Cali boho sneaks in as well as both micro hemlines and longer, floaty hippy inspired ones.

This is not meant to reflect where the story is heading as we have no idea how much Megan is going to feature in the final episodes, particularly when you factor in how we left things in a seemingly final state with Don.

DVFStarting short and even though Mad Men is set before the introduction of Diane von Furstenberg’s iconic wrap dress in 1974, Megan would have looked very at home with this style and in this leafy patterned micro version.

DVF MeganThis is also from Diane von Furstenberg’s Spring 2015 RTW collection and the long sleeves/short skirt element is on trend with how Megan dressed in 1969 last season. Megan would definitely be a DVF woman.

Victoria BeckhamSticking with patterns but moving into the floor length gown area with Victoria Beckham and this reminds me of the optical art print which were very popular in the 60s. It’s like a less hypnotic/vomit inducing version and Jessica Paré certainly is statuesque enough to pull this off.

Honor 70sSticking with the length and going a bit more boho with this Honor frock.

Honour plungeAnother gown from Honor and this goes a little deeper with the plunging neckline and adds some color flare with the rainbow dotty belt.

Tadashi Shoji NYFW FallMore relaxed elegance and this time from Tadashi Shoji. Perfect for those times when Megan isn’t awkwardly approaching producers to find out why she didn’t get the part.

BCBGThis is the longer, less in your face movie star sexy version of the baby doll mini dress Megan wore in the season 6 premiere. This is from BCBG Max Azria and she could totally make it work in just as funky fashion.

BCBG FallAnother billowy dress from BCBG Max Azria in a beautiful pattern clashing design that exudes sexiness thanks to a well placed high leg slit.

Escada jumpsuit

Megan is totally going to work the jumpsuit phase as it gets more popular in the 70s and this one from Escada is a simple yet effective version of this enduring trend.

Rebecca MinkoffOne aspect that ties most of these looks together is they are all pretty effortless and even when Megan is wearing something high fashion she pulls it off with ease. Her off duty style also reflects this and I’ve always been a fan of seeing Megan in pants; this Rebecca Minkoff ensemble is set off with the wide brimmed floppy hat and is ideal for the warmer LA climate.

Look out for more NYFW Fantasy Costuming posts this week!
