Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Apr

Pink, patterns and things that sparkle are all on the “Out of the Box” agenda this week. Despite the overcast view from my window, I am so ready for all things spring fashion.

Emmy nomination campaigning has begun; new shows are being promoted while other stars are celebrating the end of their long-running series. Plus, there is the 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, checking in with Harry Styles on tour and some magazine covers.  My resolution to not buy a new issue until I have read the previous one has not panned out well. *looks at the unread stack and weeps*The women of American Horror Story give great pattern clashing while standing together at a recent FYC event—this is technically last week, but whatever. Sarah Paulson and Leslie Grossman both in animal print Carolina Herrera, while Adina Porter is in a fabulous geometric pattern frock from the Tracee Ellis Ross collection.

Panel attire is something I have discussed a lot of the years here on the blog and you can really go in a lot of different directions. What the AHS ladies have done is coordinate without being too matchy matchy. Killing Eve is very much on my To Watch list; created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and starring Sandra Oh and Jodi Comer. Here they are attending the 1st Cannes International Series Festival to promote the show.

All three looks are perfect for the French setting (I won’t be using the word chic, because Reynolds Woodcock); Waller-Bridge in wide-legged pants and caped sleeve double-breasted ladysuit, a floral jumpsuit for Comer and Oh wears a mix of black tulle and fur. There is a mix of romance and whimsy across the board. Also taking the pink suit to the next level is Busy Philipps in velvet Anaïs Jourden to match the Three Olives Rosé Vodka she is sipping, as part of an endorsement deal. And if you haven’t read Allie Jones’ excellent profile of Philipps from last week then what are you waiting for?The pink suit theme continues with Adam Rippon, looking incredibly sharp (even without socks) at the GLAAD Media Awards.Obsessed with everything Queer Eye and the Fab Five at the moment—including this wonderful collection of reactions from Reddit at The Cut. It is honestly so great to see something so positive on TV and all over my Instagram feed. Karamo Brown also did the black shirt/bow tie combo, which works really well with this jacquard three piece stunner.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine won best comedy—Rosa’s coming out as bisexual storyline has been a highlight of the season—and Stephanie Beatriz is deservedly holding the award. This B99 quote from Beatriz’s speech is worth repeating:

“Every time someone steps up and says who they are, the world becomes a better and more interesting place.”I am on a self-imposed stripe buying ban until June (which is also part of a bet) so instead I have been buying a lot of polka dots. Luckily for me, polka dots are big this spring in stores and on the red carpet; Chelsea Peretti’s frock looks perfect for cocktails, dancing and celebrating media that is inclusive in its representation of the LGBTQ+ community.

For the full list of winners head here. The Scandal farewell tour is in full swing (the series finale is next week) and while I have dipped in and out of these last few seasons, I am excited to see how it will all end for Olivia Pope.

Kerry Washington combines the pink and sparkly trends in a super romantic Erdem on The Tonight Show with a big dash of ’70s inspired disco hair courtesy of hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew.Let’s take a moment to see what Harry Styles is wearing on tour. You guessed it; another Gucci stunner. And it’s pink and sparkly! Very on trend.

At the London date fans Ksenia Kulikova and Luna Riedel organized a massive light up rainbow tribute during “Sweet Creature.” Kulikova and Riedel run the London Rainbow Project and you can read more about this amazing moment at Teen Vogue.Another pink jacket! And for Marie Claire’s fifth annual Fresh Faces issue they have picked five actresses who represent why we should be excited by what is going on in Hollywood right now.

Each look is super colorful, Issa Rae gets the purple treatment and is serving up some ’80s office to the bar outfit realness in Céline. All five covers are fabulous—for Sophie Turner, Yara Shahidi, Riley Keough and Katherine Langford head here—and I will definitely be picking up this issue. The magazine stack grows ever higher.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Mar

Award season is officially over, Fashion Week is officially over. But the events they keep on coming. The annual FX All-Star party, SXSW, sparkly suits and an amazing magazine cover feature in this edition of “Out of the Box.”At the FX All-Star event in New York, Sarah Paulson and Billie Lourd looked very pleased to see each other. Black tights are still very much required with this weather so I am all in on Billie Lourd’s choice here. This green floral jacquard Gucci Resort 2018 frock and teal heel combination is a dream.

Meanwhile, Sarah Paulson is serving dramatic power dressing in a grey Dior suit. I thought it was a skirt at first, but nope those are the widest of wide pants. I love them.

An FX/FXX crossover that needs to happen.

Congratulations to You’re the Worst creator Stephen Falk and make-up artist Kristina Frisch on the new babyThose Saint Laurent shorts belong in 2001—this is another indicator that early ’00s fashion is making a dreaded comeback—but I love the top half of Keri Russell’s outfit. Switching out the shirt from the runway look for something less fussy was a good move and it is always fun seeing these two on the red carpet.

Season six of The Americans the new trailer is now less than two weeks away; it looks tense as hell.

No filter/just love. WE LOVE YOU❤️

Taking this as a personal message to me. SXSW is a lot like Sundance in both the kinds of work getting showcased and the more casual sartorial leanings. The big difference here is the temperature. As with Sundance there are a lot of outfits to covet, which would work in my closet, including Abbi Jacobson’s print dress complete with a Peter Pan collar at the 6 Balloons premiere.Regina Hall ‘Drinks Well with Others’ at the Support the Girls SXSW premiere. A slogan tee I can get behind.

✴️✴️✴️. . @selashiloniphoto good job taking cool pictures.

Mustard yellow and ’70s styling are my weakness. This D’Arcy Carden shoot is fun and also I really want that blouse. Miss you, The Good Place. On the European leg of his tour in Paris, Harry Styles continues to delight in his suit choices, switching out Gucci florals for Saint Laurent sparkles. I screamed with joy when this Advocate cover popped up on my feed. More magazines featuring Natalie Morales and Stephanie Beatriz. Please and thank you.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 Sep

For all the ’70s inspired looks—of which there are still are many—the decade that follows is inching its way back in the style stakes. I am less thrilled about this turn of events because the ’80s feels a little overplayed, but that doesn’t mean I am completely immune.

September is almost at an end, but there is still A LOT going on including galas, premieres and other various events. This week there is also dominated by pattern, which I am so here for. Speaking of which, here is my interview with costume designer Lorraine Calvert talking all things 1970s menswear and Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House. Garish patterns are my fave.  Lupita Nyong’o gives great red carpet no matter the style code and at the 2017 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park she looks cool af in Gucci pink metallic bomber jacket, loafers and super round sunglasses. Also working the tee of the event to great effect. Vampire’s Wife is a brand that continues to deliver on the romantic infused ruffled delights and now January Jones is getting in on the action. This mini metallic floral number is one of the reasons I’m thinking a ’80s revival isn’t so bad. Also, Last Man on Earth is back on Sunday (October 1) and I cannot wait. Airbnb is getting into the tour business and for the ultimate SATC experience they’ve enlisted Carrie Bradshaw herself, for this one-off event. It is of course sold out (there were only four spaces) and at the launch, SJP gives the best in fall fashion in a floral frock and contrasting belt. Sparkly pumps are always a winner too.

And while I am on the topic of perfect floral frocks for fall; here is Yvette Nicole Brown looking fabulous at a screening of The Mayor, in a dress from Anthropologie that is the most autumn of color palettes. Anna Chlumsky is doing some wonderful things on a wonderful season of Halt and Catch Fire and at the Metropolitan Opera Opening Night she looks incredible in Christian Siriano. The peplum structure and window pane detail makes this a standout frock and the orange tone lipstick and nails are the perfect boost of color. From the opera to the ballet and Keri Russell in a look that is very Americans era appropriate and while Philip and Elizabeth don’t get to go undercover at fancy events, if they did then it would look a bit like this. But with more wigs. This is another frilled number from Johanna Ortiz and I was surprised that she didn’t wear this designer to the Emmys.More from the ballet and Michelle Monaghan ups the drama levels in a colorful and floaty Prabal Gurung dress.

Maggie Gyllenhall is up there with Tracee Ellis Ross and Elisabeth Moss for the best Instagram BTS shots of outfits she has been wearing and this red dress by Ryan Roche is a stunner. Also, I finally started watching The Deuce and Maggie does not disappoint. Also here is an interesting piece about why this show is getting it right. The thread that has given me the most joy on Twitter over the last few months is Fiona’s deep dive into the style similarities between Cate Blanchett and Harry Styles. It is truly the gift that keeps on giving and we haven’t even had the Thor promo tour yet.

Harry has of course been wearing some A+ suits this year and there isn’t a pattern he isn’t afraid to wear. Case in point; this very jester like Gucci (of course) ensemble at the iHeartRadio Music Festival is perfect for a performance and nod to the New Romantics.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 May

After last week’s pattern extravaganza we’re not backing away from print; in fact there’s a lot of mixing textures and the newly titled MTV Movie and TV Awards delivered in a big way on this sartorial front. Plus fabulous suits and more putting a bird on it.Happiness in one photo and a sequin spectacle of the highest order. Dripped in rose gold Emilio Pucci is Taraji P. Henson and a super colorful patchwork Rosie Assoulin number has me smiling as much as Tracee Ellis Ross.

Tracee Ellis Ross and Congresswoman Maxine Waters presented Taraji P. Henson with the award for Best Fight Against the System and this continues Henson’s hot streak of delivering super passionate speeches about important matters.Yara Shahidi can make any outfit work even when it is doing as much as this Gucci skirt and top number is. Shahidi is not overwhelmed by these two pieces and I’m particularly in love with the mirrored skirt which is giving me disco ball adjacent feelings. Also with a talent for making any look work for her is Zendaya and off the back of this stunning Met Gala gown she is now making me like something sheer; there’s something very ethereal about this Zuhair Murad embroidered dress.

Gold stacked heels were all the rage at the MTV Movie and TV awards much to my delight and I think Zendaya’s Le Silla sandals are my fave. One of the best dressed characters on TV right now is Insecure’s Issa and off screen Issa Rae delivers too. This Off-White frock is a really fun play on leather mixing edgy with feminine textures like pleating and boob ruffles. Great styling from H to T.While we’re on the subject of Insecure and fabulous style; here is Rae’s co-star Yvonne Orji crushing it in matching printed Dries Van Noten. This Jonathan Simkhai gown looks like something you would find in a fancy drawing room of an old manor house and I mean that in the best possible way.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead also adds drama with a berry lip color. She’s the best and also hair goals for if I ever let mine get slightly longer.

Bonus Mary Elizabeth Winstead as this is pattern clashing to perfection.

At a screening/Q&A for I Love Dick, Kathryn Hahn put a bird on it and paired it with plaid. And it works! I have new and yet to be worn pants that look similar so this is giving me ideas.

Also in things I have already written about; Lucy Liu also wore this Alice + Olivia blouse on Elementary recently.Harry Styles is on the promo train for his new album and he is already killing it with his suit choices working his way through the color spectrum. Performing on Today and giving me so many Beatles vibes with that guitar. Pink looks great on you Harry and I can’t wait to see what he’ll be wearing next.
