Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Jan

Coats, coats, coats are on the “Out of the Box” menu as Sundance continues and Paris Fashion Week also delivers in the outerwear department. Currently I am cocooned in knitwear so anything intended for a cold climate is a welcome sight. And with the winter weather this week comes a whole variety of black attire; both classic and somber in places. This makes sense, all things considered. kirsten-dunstGreat coat, sunglasses and red lipstick (and engagement ring, which can be seen here) from Kirsten Dunst at the Dior show on Monday during Paris Fashion Week. It might be cheesy to use the word chic here, but eh I’m gonna dive into the fromage as she looks chic af. rami-malekIn Paris a few days earlier at the Dior Homme Menswear show new face of Dior Rami Malek also gave great coat. Malek is one of the guys who features most on these pages because of his style and this brand pairing makes so much sense. Rami also crushes the patterned sweater/shirt look.abbi-and-taviI said there would be more Sundance coats and at the Vulture Sundance Spot Abbi Jacobson and Tavi Gevinson dropped by in some great outerwear while promoting Person to Person. Long and slightly oversized coats have been on trend this year and it is a great mix of effortless with smart. Gevinson’s scarf game is also top notch.

And over at Elle and Bustle they have interviews with Jacobson (Bustle gets Gevinson too) that are very relevant to my interests including how Broad City will address this current political climate.

Starting with his much needed moment of comic relief from “Hack into Broad City” from last Friday.issa-raeThe coats they keep on coming and at the ‘Power Of Story: Art Of Episodic Storytelling’ panel Issa Rae also sartorially delivers on the outerwear with plaid crossed with what looks like the inside of a beehive.hannah-simoneHannah Simone goes classic at the Band Aid premiere in Alice + Olivia off the shoulder dress. I’m excited for Band Aid and not just because it makes me instantly think of Almost Famous and it was written/directed by Simone’s New Girl co-star Zoe Lister Jones with an entirely female crew. Plus it sounds like it is a lot of fun, which is always welcome.zoe-lister-jonesZoe Lister Jones also stars in her directorial debut and she stopped by the IMDb studio in an ensemble which continues to add to my theory that Sundance has my ideal wardrobe. Another black dress but getting an oomph of color with a bold red collar. Also black patent shoes that give me so much envy as I was never allowed this style when I was a kid. The reason; I would scuff them and considering the state of all my shoes, my mother was right. But I can but dream.connie-brittonA black turtleneck sweater dress is another classic closet must have and Connie Britton is all over this while promoting Cast Change. Manicure and earrings are also fabulous.chloe-sevingyContinuing her patterned dresses with a late ’60s/early ’70s vibe and Chloë Sevigney adds a bit of sequin sparkle to the Beatriz At Dinner premiere and I love everything about this.morgan-saylorMorgan Saylor is flying into outer space in very cute Miu Miu at the Novitiate premiere and this is another case where I get to sing the praises of black tights. Although I do worry her arms are cold. I have a black pair of shoes very much like the burgundy ones Saylor is wearing and now I am coveting this color too. Bonus lipstick and manicure points.armie-hammerOne of the most talked about movies coming out of Sundance this year is Call Me By My Name and it is one love story that I cannot wait to see. Star Armie Hammer is all slinged up due to a torn pectoral muscle and he’s ticking all the sweater boxes in fuzzy stripes.naomie-harrisNow for something more formal in the black dress department with Naomie Harris at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards in Dior that looks super cozy (if not a little chilly in the arm department). Adding a splash of pink and gold makes this so much more than just a safe choice. And this is in part why Harris graces these pages so often; there’s always something that stands out.kelly-and-ewanFull ’90s nostalgia feelings right down to Ewan McGregor’s Adidas trainers and Kelly Macdonald’s silk dress at the Trainspotting T2 premire. Great lipstick choice from Macdonald too.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

27 Oct

TV Instagram mourns those lost on The Walking Dead (spoilers ahead), celebrates a birthday on Game of Thrones, gets excited about A+ guest stars and has a whole lot of style on and off set.

The biggest TV event this week was the season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead and even though I quit watching last year the first thing I checked after the episode aired was the identity of the departed. The Walking Dead is a show I generally keep up with just in case I ever want to go back and this is mostly through the Richonne tag on Tumblr.

My other favorite character is/was Glenn and this photo by Steven Yeun’s TV wife, Lauren Cohan is a heartbreaker. I am very excited to see what Yeun will be doing next.

Steven Yeun paid tribute to the other Negan victim from the TWD season premiere in a very cool atmospheric shot of Michael Cudlitz.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend returned last week with a fantastic episode (and songs) and everything about this photo fills me with joy.

And in excellent Crazy Ex-Girlfriend casting news I offer you the above.

If I *had* to pick a favorite clone it would be Helena and I cannot wait to see more of her adventures in the woods with Donnie and Alison.

Paparazzi got some BIG photos this week while Game of Thrones was shooting (don’t click this link if you want to remain spoiler free – I have SO many costuming thoughts). This is not these photos and there is something very unnerving about Dora and SpongeBob hanging in Westeros.

Get ready for an onslaught of Halloween celeb photos after this weekend, but meanwhile enjoy the SNL ladies and this fabulous sketch. While I’m on the subject of this holiday; check out my piece on teen TV classics, costumes and growing up.

Everything about this is stunning.

I’m enjoying this season of The Last Man on Earth as much as I’m enjoying Will Forte’s drawn on eyebrows and Carol’s fabulous top. So that is a lot and it will be fun to see what the new location will bring.

Also high on the fun list is Timeless and it continues to capture the same feelings that early Sleepy Hollow gave me; the core cast is just as delightful.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine blast from the past.

I still need to watch the I Love Dick pilot on Amazon, but knowing Phoebe Robinson is going to be in it when the full season lands makes me even more eager to do so.

Abbi Jacobson and Jon Glaser serving up very different interpretations of talk show style with Glaser opting for something from Jon Glaser Loves Gear. In non-shocking news, I am very excited about Abbi’s new book.

Lupita not only stuns on the red carpet, but she also gifts us with a closer look at her Elle “Women in Hollywood” celebration ensemble.

Also from the Elle “Women in Hollywood” event is this perfectly understandable reaction to Lupita Nyong’o from Yara Shahidi.

I’ve said this many times before, but out of all the cast reunions the Friday Night Lights ones give me the most feeeeeeelings. This is ultimate.

Stranger Things kids are in big demand and the height difference here just made me laugh a lot.

I also appreciate the fact that actors will freak out over other actors. Also still so here for Henry Jennings in a turtleneck.

Chris Geere also demonstrating good internal freak out here.

Lots of getting ready Emmy stories including Keri Russell’s make-up routine. Her eyebrows in this shot are giving me inspiration for the big day on Saturday.

Yara Shahidi was one of our best dressed over the weekend and she switched things up after the awards giving a detailed photo diary of her Emmy night for Elle.

Constance Zimmer got a bold blunt bob on Emmy day and it looks fabulous against her super pink frock.

Best of the Pre-Emmy Parties: Vanity Fair and BAFTA

18 Sep

More pre-Emmy gaming at the Vanity Fair and FX party with a whole host of TV Ate My Wardrobe faves and this party also showcases just how good FX is at the moment. Plus the annual BAFTA LA Tea Party, which always delivers on the daytime shindig attire.keri-russell-and-matthew-rhysGot to kick off with the show that dominates a lot of costume chat in these parts; Keri Russell always brings the casual glam to events like this and for this occasion Matthew Rhys has dialed back on the hiatus beard grizzle with a trim. Nice color suit too and I am looking forward to seeing more of this IRL couple tonight.keirdrich-sellatiAnd this is several shades of adorable from the Americans kids and Keidrich Sellati’s turtleneck/blazer combo is levels of spy and casual attire that his TV dad would wear. schwimmer-paulson-brownDelightful is the word I would use to describe this photo with the cast of American Crime Story giving off all the good vibes. Excellent lipstick choice from Sarah Paulson too.
connie-britton-and-jesse-plemonsThis Vanity Fair/FX party is just a long list of feelings pretty much; including this Friday Night Lights reunion. Tami and Lance feeeeeeelings. donald-gloverDonald Glover keeps the same shirt and changes the suit and still looks just as good as the day before.angela-bassettAngela Bassett always looks incredible and this is no exception. tatiana-maslany-and-maisie-williamsNow to the BAFTA LA Tea Party and there are a lot of super cute patterned dresses to scroll through including Maisie Williams in a very fun House of Holland number, which pairs really well with Tatiana Maslany’s also starry patchwork Coach frock. yara-shahidiGoing slightly more pattern delicate is Yara Shahidi in an ethereal Tommy Hilfiger dress and another stunner from the Black-ish star.millie-bobby-brownA few days ago I mentioned some red carpet similarities between Millie Bobby Brown and Kiernan Shipka; this look continues this notion and while I’m not a fan of the term ‘age appropriate’ (as it can sound quite stuffy) this is exactly that. Good choice of flats too.melora-hardinTransparent’s Melora Hardin also has the right idea for a frock that bridges the summer/fall gap especially when it is still this warm.alison-wrightA different spin on print and Alison Wright’s Stella McCartney jumpsuit (the top version has been worn by Cookie on Empire) is a fun take on daytime party attire.rupaulPolka dots and pink at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, zebra print and yellow at the BAFTA Tea Party; RuPaul crushes it in color and print every single time.

BrainDead is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows of the summer; the cast is great, it is fun and the costuming is highly covetable. Former Good Wife costume designer Daniel Lawson continues to hit it out of the park.

A reminder that I still need to watch BoJack Horseman. I don’t know how I have let it get to three seasons without seeing any (I know).

It shocked me to find this photo because I remember the day so well. I was respected enough to be honored at the Maui Film Festival – but not known enough to have a stylist or "glam squad". I found this Madewell dress in my closet. The most I knew how to do for grooming was pin half of it back and blink on a few coats of mascara. Before we went to the ceremony I felt flashes of embarrassment – I worried I was too fat, too ugly, too depressingly banal to be honored. I cringed to take photos. But today I see this moment and feel only love for myself. There is nothing wrong with this person. She is honest and beautiful and committed to showing up for this life. I wish I saw myself then as I see myself now. There is no need to waste your time working to be anything other than you. So hey, #tbt – thank you for the chance to honor all the hilarious ways we didn't know ourselves upon first meeting, and all the exciting new ways we get to know ourselves while we keep living.

An important look back from Brie Larson. We are so lucky to have her share this experience in relation to where she was and where she is now. And also that dress is wonderful. Sometimes what you have in your closet is all you need.

New York Fashion Week: Best of the Runway Watching Looks Part 2

10 Sep

New York Fashion Week continues to draw a plethora of famous faces to the front rows of runway shows and this gives us a whole lot of new looks to pour over. This is the second “Best of the Runway Watching” column and you can find the OITNB cast heavy first take here.

The Alice + Olivia show was a particularly big draw for TV/film starlets with a lot of them wearing items that have just hit Alicia + Olivia stores/online. We will be linking to those as you might want to add them to your wish list.

NYFW YvonneAt Naeem Khan the front row is all intricate pattern and bold designs much like the intricate beading and color on display on the runway. All decked out in Naeem Khan are Jamie Chung (she has been a heavy presence this week and she’s the only person to feature on both ‘Best of’ lists), Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Yvonne Strahovski, Connie Britton, and Padma Lakshmi. I am especially drawn to Strahovski’s stunning blue and yellow kaleidoscope-print frock and of course Connie Britton in general.

Kiernan Shipka in pantsIt’s a rare sight to see Kiernan Shipka at an event in pants, but here she is at Zac Posen in another sartorial delight. The structure of the top is unusual in its angles and yet it works with the patterned detail of her bottom half.

Kiernan ShipkaAt Tory Burch, Kiernan Shipka wore something more in line with her usual red carpet styling in a cute floral frock. Even though it’s entirely age appropriate I do have to remind myself that she is only 14 years old and then I feel all protective; Hollywood be good to her.

Anna ChlumskyIt might be due to the colors and pattern, but there is a little something Flamenco dancer about Anna Chlumsky’s outfit at Zac Posen. I’m swung by the texture of the red sweater (SO excited for sweater season) and Chlumsky’s striking red lip color. Plus she’ s pretty great so that helps me get passed the aspects of the outfit that are less pleasing.

Willow ShieldsThe rest of the “Best of” entries come from the Alice + Olivia event; up first is another teen delight with Willow Shields (Prim from The Hunger Games) striking a pose worthy of Wonder Woman in a very cute ballerina button down. The black and white patterned shoes peaking out are a cool touch.

Lynsey FonsecaThis might be my favorite from the Alice + Olivia clothes on display at this show and Lyndsy Fonseca deserves a dress this pretty after being subjected to the longest tale of how someone met their spouse (Fonseca is one of Ted’s kids on HIMYM). The bold green jacquard design also has the all important pocket detail.

Katie ChungAnother dress you could wear for day/night events and the only thing not quite working with Katie Chang’s outfit is her meh shoe color. The gold and black design of this gown and the cinched in waist make this another standout from Alice + Olivia.

Jamie ChungJamie Chung pairs an edgy leather cropped fitting tank  with the super girly lip covered skirt and scarlet ankle strap heals. It’s a fun, flirty outfit and I’m half expecting to see this skirt show up on either The Mindy Project or New Girl.

Holland RodenDoing classic black and white is Teen Wolf’s Holland Roden, adding flare with a pair of winking heels. Yep her shoes have faces on them and they are pretty awesome (and maybe 1% creepy).

Jennifer MorrisonA few weeks ago I went into a ridiculous amount of stores (10+) looking for a red belt like the one Jennifer Morrison is wearing and I did not find a single thin red belt. Luckily I got one for my birthday otherwise I would be giving this photo all the coveting side eye. I’m glad I don’t have to do this as it’s a really lovely outfit and another chance to see the red heels that I’m now after.

Jessica Lowndes A+OThis is one ornate gown complete with tassels, lace, beading and taffeta; while it might overwhelm the wearer, Jessica Lowndes looks resplendent.

What Would Tami Taylor Do?

1 Jul

I quite often find myself asking “What Would Tami Taylor Do?” (see also Leslie Knope) and now there is a t-shirt emblazoned with this question. Connie Britton has teamed up with Planned Parenthood to support the pro-choice women of Texas. When casting the Lifetime movie of Senator Wendy Davis after last week’s monumental filibuster, Connie Britton was the first name on many lists and this felt like an appropriate time to use the Friday Night Light battle cry “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose.”

Connie BrittonOver at The Frisky they have Connie Britton’s statement from Planned Parenthood which says:

“The character Tami on Friday Night Lights is a Texas woman deeply committed to her community and to standing up for what is right for her neighbors and the people she loves. I have been inspired by how people around the country have united to stand with the women of Texas, and I can’t help but think that, in this moment, we all have the opportunity to join with and become strong, powerful Texas men and women.”

This reflects the letter that Britton wrote prior to the 2012 election after Mitt Romney started using “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose” and Planned Parenthood is one of the factors that Britton mentions as this is where her character Tami Taylor got a pregnancy test in season 1 and Smash Williams’ mother worked as a nurse.

connie_brittonplanned_parenthood_texas_tee_orn

A limited edition t-shirt in orange or white will be available throughout July and as you can see below it simply says “What Would Tami Taylor Do?” For more information on this t-shirt from Connie Britton and Planned Parenthood Action Fund head here.

I’m not normally one for slogan tees but this one is special enough to break my own rules.

Hollywood Reporter’s 2013 Drama Actress Roundtable

30 May

It’s the time of year when The Hollywood Reporter produces Emmy related TV roundtable discussions and while the quality of the conversations varies, the drama actress one is always lively and is generally my favourite of the bunch. Once again they have a group of women from shows that cover both network and cable, with the added new platform of Netflix to discuss their roles on TV, the industry and their past experiences. This year the participants are Monica Potter (Parenthood), Kerry Washington (Scandal), Kate Mara (House of Cards), Connie Britton (Nashville), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad MenTop of the Lake).

Hollywood reporter cover

The nature of this kind of roundtable discussion means that some candid remarks are made, but the participants are also guarded as they tell stories of bad experiences but don’t fill in all of the details. Monica Potter discusses her first post-baby audition where she was considered “too fat” for the role and body image is a topic that comes up more than once (I’m intrigued as to whether the guys will cover this area, doubtful but you never know as Hollywood has body issues with both genders). Elisabeth Moss rightly mentions that “It’s not just actresses, it’s all women. We all have this perception of what we’re supposed to look like.”

Expectations of how an actress should look comes up later but in a different way as they mention the backhanded compliments that people give such as they look “younger/skinnier” in real life. So don’t ever say this, it’s bad. This is part of the notion of intimacy between the viewer and the characters that come into our living rooms on a weekly basis and how the relationship is different between movies and TV; there is an investment in TV that doesn’t exist in the same way as in movies that generally have a beginning, a middle and end (depending on how long running the franchise is).

One aspect that I enjoy about these discussions is how they try to dispel the idea that everyone hates each other and it’s a relentless competition; while I’m sure there are those factions they make a point of mentioning how supportive actresses can be. Monica Potter mentions that having successful women on TV “should be fun and celebrated” and Connie Britton reiterates this by saying that “It’s a lot more fun if you can share stories and make friends, and be in it together with people as opposed to if you isolate yourself.”

Several topics are covered including other audition woes (Kerry Washington talks about the lack of roles for women of color), social media, political involvement and if they contribute to the creative process of their character. One thing I would like to see with these roundtables is a change in some of the questions as I feel like the best advice/worst advice comes up every single time. The penultimate question is a fun one as they are asked if they could be on any show in history what would it be? I love that both Kate Mara and Elisabeth Moss geek out over My So-Called Life (and earlier Moss is very open about her love of Parenthood).

With any group discussion there are always some participants that are more vocal than the rest but at no point does it feel like one person is railroading the conversation. Elisabeth Moss comes across as very funny, something we don’t get to see that often on Mad Men and Connie Britton seems as wise as Tami Taylor. This is definitely a group of women I would like to go for drinks with.

Watch the whole interview below and head over to The Hollywood Reporter for behind the scenes photos of the group. The monochromatic styling of the cover is on trend and I much prefer this more casual approach they over last year’s gown affair. In unsurprising news I really want to find out the shades/brands of lipstick they are wearing (especially Elisabeth Moss’).
