Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 Jan

January continues to be the month where everything happens. This week we have the NAACP Awards, more TCA and Sundance kicks off. Sundance is one of my favorite style events of the year because of the levels of knitwear, coats and boots. Fancy gowns are one thing, but give me boots and tights any day. Expect much more of this next week.Tracee Ellis Ross gazing at her NAACP award is how I am looking at this photo. Sparky Narciso Rodriguez paired with this jacket (I don’t know if it is faux or not) gives such strong Studio 54 vibes. I wore my vintage faux fur jacket out of the first time last weekend and it is an experience I will be detailing in the newsletter soon. Grown-ish is so far living up to everything I hoped it would be and more; performances, storylines and the costumes are all amazing. On the red carpet Yara Shahidi continues to impress and at the NAACP Awards, this Vera Wang looks a little Western tavern and I am here for it. Especially that collar. Not only is Yvette Nicole Brown’s Öfuurë gown an absolute stunner, but Brown wore it to make a bigger statement. Here’s what Brown said on her Instagram:

“I chose to rep the beauty of Africa and its beautiful countries for this special event. Being a descendent of the kings and queens brought here to America and enslaved, I don’t know what (per the “president”) sh*thole country I’m originally from but I know pure EXCELLENCE comes from the mighty continent of Africa. Proud to be a descendant of that legacy.”Kerry Washington goes classic in Michael Kors and her accessory game is next level.

Washington appeared on stage as a representative for the #TimesUp movement along with Tracee Ellis Ross, Lena Waithe, Jurnee Smollett Bell, Angela Robinson and Laverne Cox. This is not just for the Golden Globes.
Costume designer June Ambrose shows how to really work a cape on the red carpet in Michael Costello.  Draaaaaama. Another stunning va-va-voom gown from Niecy Nash, switching florals for metallic Mac Duggal. So many sparkles this week as this continues to be the trend. At the NACCP dinner and ceremony, Tessa Thompson puts a glitzy spin on the ladysuit in Jonathan Simkhai. Lena Waithe looks great in the mix of smart/casual in suit, polka dot shirt and classic Vans.Team Insecure go for three very different looks; Jay Ellis in a standard tux that is anything but, Yvonne Orji in a romantic Patricia Bonaldi frock and Issa Rae nails the sequin ’70s vibe in Marc Jacobs. Also looking like a fun group hang at the NAACP awards with plenty of sartorial grace. This is Us fave, Susan Kelechi Watson’s beautiful patterned Phuong My dress is a standout. Danai Gurira in ruffled Rodarte and Chadwick Boseman in Prada reminds me how excited I am for the Black Panther press tour (and the movie). Back to TCA—which is now over—and this very fun artsy frock as worn by Kelly Macdonald. Appearing during the PBS session to talk about her new show The Child in Time, Macdonald nails the sit down look. Even if I am not wild about the scrunchie top boots. Stripes! I am officially on a stripe buying ban (because I really have too many, if such a thing can exist), but that doesn’t mean I can’t long from afar. This is a great sweater from Supergirl* star Melissa Benoist as she talks Waco. And regular readers will know how much I adore Julia Garner. I am excited for this mini-series.

* For all things Supergirl style check out my column over at The Observer where I go deep into where to find the costumes from the CW superhero shows.Sundance! Where boots and black tights are in abundance, much to my delight. At the “An Artist at the Table” kickoff event Dominque Fishback wears the platonic ideal of an outfit for this festival. Hopefully she has a heavy duty coat for venturing outside. While we’re on the subject of outwear; Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal give great coats at the world premiere of Blindspotting, one of the most anticipated films screening at Sundance. Initial reaction to the Diggs/Casal film—which they co-wrote and star in—is good. Gold shoes also up the style stakes for Diggs.

Best of the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet

12 Jan

Award season continues and I probably shouldn’t admit this, but I didn’t even realize the Critics’ Choice Awards were last night until the red carpet tweets started appearing on my TL. Maybe spread these shows out a bit.

But there were a lot of sartorial highs including many embracing bold color after the weekend. Greta Gerwig goes full ethereal in Fendi, this might be my favorite thing she has worn so far during award season. Saoirse Ronan continues to impress with her red carpet styling because it is never the same thing. And when you’re attending this many events it would be really easy to get stuck in a sartorial rut. Here she pairs pretty in Michael Kors shimmer with a dark lip color, giving this outfit a rebellious edge.Continuing to pick up awards and looking great doing so is Sterling K. Brown. Ryan Michelle Bathe switches her tux for a frock, those silver pumps are a fabulous touch.Feeling a wave of calm as I look at Yara Shahidi in super ’70s patterned Giambattista Valli. On the scale of best florals, Erdem are high on the scale and Natalia Dyer shows just why. More killer florals from Niecy Nash to brighten up the blue carpet. Nash took to the stage with host Olivia Munn to toast (and roast) some of the recent Hollywood headline makers including Mark Wahlburg for his recent pay scandal. Because he didn’t already make enough money *insert every eye roll ever* A super fun Eloquii dress for Chrissy Metz; this might be my fave red (or blue) carpet look of hers so far. Also coveting the plaid coat she wore on the recent This is Us.Allison Janney looks like she is having the most fun while working the I, Tonya awards love and this cobalt blue Michael Cinco Swarovski studded gown is a striking choice. Octavia Spencer in another Tadashi Shoji winner. And we have also entered the official pleats section of this post.Emerald green plus red hair is a tried and tested combination, but it never gets boring. Especially when it is Jessica Chastain in Vionnet and there’s pleats.Gal Gadot has been a repeat fixture on TV Ate My Wardrobe of late in bold pink, blue and now metallic Prada. First came the colorful turtleneck/suit combo, then this amazing green jacket for Lil Rel Howery. Also crushing it in the colorful tux department is David Harbour. All the Sheriff Hopper feelings. I know Joel is the worst on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but I find Michael Zegen super charming in everything else so I can’t help but want him to not be a dick in this show. Eggplant looks good on him. Yvonne Strahovski has just returned from the ’80s in polka dot mini Ronald van der Kemp. I love it. Thrilled The Big Sick won Best Comedy. Real Emily V. Gordon crushes it in red and Big Sick Emily, Zoe Kazan wears a dreamy Valentino. This award show has brought out my inner magpie, Rachel Bloom’s mix sequin Christian Siriano frock is another jazzy delight. More shimmery wonders with Mary Steenburgen in Cédric Charlier. Ann Dowd won Best Supporting Actress for Handmaid’s Tale and also in my mind for The Leftovers. This award season has been full of glitzy looking gowns and this is another fantastic one. I like ending awards posts with the Big Little Lies women. This is no different. While I still have qualms about a second season (because I think the first is pretty much perfect), I am excited to get more of these kind of shots in the future.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 Sep

After I talked up last week’s bumper “Out of the Box” this one is slightly longer and all the events, they keep on coming; TIFF, NYFW and the Creative Arts Emmys. We have a fun mix of fancy red carpet, daytime attire and even an airport look.

Plus, The X-Files celebrated its 24th anniversary and I wrote about Dana Scully’s influence on TV work wardrobes for The ObserverYou should know by now how I feel about Tatiana Maslany’s style—strongly positive—and she gives great casual and fancy. At the Stronger TIFF premiere, this J. Mendel is of course the latter and the color/ruffles are fantastic. As is Maslany’s dark lipstick choice.

And as I mentioned on Twitter the other day, I am so excited to see her post-Orphan Black career and that her extraordinary talent will reach a wider audience. Mohair sweaters are a quiet obsession of mine and everything about Elisabeth Moss in Rochas, at a screening for The Square is ’50s inspired perfection.

Another fabulous pick from super stylist Karla Welch and I cannot wait to see what Moss will be wearing at the Emmys on Sunday.

See also this incredible tailored look.

Even if Brie Larson’s directorial debut wasn’t called Unicorn Store, I would applaud her airport ensemble—fluffy whimsical sandals aside—and both Larson and fiancé Alex Greenwald look cool af.

The Vampire’s Wife is a brand that has been doing very good things of late and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s silver frock continues this trend. Maggie has been crushing it during this press tour for The Deuce.

Also, Maggie addressed one of the important issues of our time (and you get to see how great the sleeves are in this Watch What Happens Live clip). At the New York mother! premiere before this happened with a T-shirt swap, there was a whole lot of couples coordinating between Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. Also on the highly anticipated Emmy red carpet list.
The prelude to the main event and the Creative Arts Emmys—for costume wins head here—delivered with Niecy Nash looking divine in a figure hugging and puffed sleeve scarlet dream. Also in red and giving me so much life is Angela Bassett in Romona Keveza. I’m sad she didn’t win her guest actress in a comedy category for the amazing Thanksgiving episode of Master of None.Serving up super sexy drama in gold and black Mikael D is Laverne Cox. Currently fantasy casting a movie with Cox and Margot Robbie based on their red carpet looks.I was already enamored by Emily V. Gordon’s style and then I watched The Big Sick and fell further in love—the red brain sweater was based on something Emily wore. This is another great red carpet look in floral Self-Portrait and Kumail Namjiani scrubs up well in a midnight blue tux.Moving on to NYFW and it has been a very busy week/month/year for Elisabeth Moss. And another 50s-adjacent look at Kate Spade New York. A brand I very much enjoy (and can almost afford).Florals continue to dominate and at the Refinery29 29Rooms: Turn It Into Art event, Issa Rae and Gabby Sidibe looks like they are having a blast.

Insecure wrapped up its second season with a very strong finale and it has been another season full of great costuming.Obligatory “I still miss The Carrie Diaries” mention because here is Austin Butler—wearing a Radiohead tee—at Jeremy Scott with girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens. Two mohair sweaters in one week! Skai Jackson pairs hers with a burgundy pleated skirt and this outfit at Libertine is pretty much an ideal fall ensemble. Jackson is only 15 and definitely way cooler than me.The Outlander premiere was an emotional watch for me, but I am very glad to have it back and switching out ’50s Boston maternity style for a very cool and colorful look at Delpozo is Caitriona Balfe. Balfe has been having a very good NYFW.Chunky ankle/calf boots are here to stay it would seem and I am more than fine with this dip back to the ’90s trend as previously seen from Louis Vuitton last year. Michelle Monaghan is at Oscar de la Renta and I love the edged up glam of this look.Obligatory “I still miss Selfie” mention and Karen Gillan’s super cute romper at Self-Portrait looks like something Eliza would wear. Plus, more ankle boots to covet. The Christian Siriano front row looked the most fun and I want to have a boozy lunch with all four of these women. And if Leslie Jones could lend me her cape then that would be a bonus.

I’m looking forward to seeing who will be wearing Siriano on Sunday. I’m all about the Emmys right now.In more great fabulous front row news; Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts in coordinating and yet contrasting florals at Michael Kors. Naomi Watts continues to be an Instagram fave.

It is no secret that I am a long time Michelle and Busy fan and I was very excited when Michelle popped up on Busy’s Insta last week. Even more so when they did a whole Dawson’s Creek thing a couple of days after. Which also included this amazing photo.

Best of the Hollywood Reporter “Women in Entertainment” Celebration

8 Dec

The Hollywood Reporter celebrated their annual “Women in Entertainment” issue with a breakfast event and this means a whole range of daytime styles from ladysuits to patterned dress delights. This year Tina Fey, Ryan Murphy and Megyn Kelly were all honored with Jon Hamm delivering on the funny in his opening speech for Fey.

You can watch the entire thing and it is well worth it.

Plus here are the best looks from the event and there is so much pattern pretty.

simone-bilesKicking off with a ladysuit in a fantastic color and multi-Olympic gold winning medalist Simone Biles crushes it in Marienbad.the-farmigasMore ladysuit goodness from Vera Farmiga and polka dot pussy bow is probably my favorite kind of pussy bow blouse. Joined by younger sister Tassia (for Ryan Murphy celebrating reasons) and she also looks fantastic in one of the many patterned numbers I am now coveting hard.michelle-monaghanGetting all the amazing collar points is Michelle Monaghan in this superb Michael Kors Spring 17 ensemble. Daytime event perfection.eva-longoriaMore florals and another winner with Eva Longoria wearing a dress from her own Limited collection; it is totally affordable and very cute. Plus bonus pockets!niecy-nashFrom roses to leopard print and Niecy Nash is full super sexy whoa in this all powerful Meow and Barks Boutique dress.maria-menounosDipping into that seventies inspiration is Maria Menounos in a fabulous Valentino mini frock. issa-raeWhile I’m not crazy for shoulder cutouts, I do love the print and color of this Ellery dress on Issa Rae.emma-stoneAnd while I’m going crazy for yellow dresses (as I tend to) Emma Stone is smart to remind people of the great La La Land poster during award season and she does so in Giambattista Valli style.constance-zimmerConstance Zimmer mixes casual with glam in a Pat Benatar tee from Janey Lopaty Vintage and super sparkly Milly skirt.aja-naomi-kingIt is not all print and ladysuits; Aja Naomi King looks bold in blue and this Alice + Olivia dress is a great breakfast choice. I’d like to see some hot pink pumps, but I can deal with this neutral tone for an event this early in the day.genevieve-angelsonNow it might look like Genevieve Angelson put on this Chloe ensemble back to front, but I love it so much and she is definitely pulling it off. Plus I really hope another network/streaming platform saves Good Girls Revolt because the story on that show is far from over.tina-feyTo the woman of the hour and really if you haven’t watched the video at the start of this piece then I will urge you to scroll up and do so. Also she looks great in patterned Dolce & Gabbana with a very day appropriate blazer thrown over for good measure.tina-and-jonAnd I’ve got to end on this one for reasons. Oh to have Jon Hamm look at you like that.

Friday Night Lights cast hangouts get me every single time. This is no exception.

Now for NYFW and at Opening Ceremony this is a whole lot of comic actors to adore, all wearing fabulous clothes.

More Alia Shawkat and the Rachel Antonoff Betty and Veronica collection was showcased in a super fun and imaginative way, with Shawkat being one of the models.

So many heart eyes at Phoebe Robinson in Tracy Reese at NYFW and I am really looking forward to reading You Can’t Touch My Hair, which is out next month.

Winter Is Here

All eyes are on Belfast to see which Game of Thrones cast members are heading to Northern Ireland for season 7 and while this bar hang is not a guarantee that Sansa and Arya will reunite any time soon, I can but dream. I am also here for Maisie William’s double drink choice of a cocktail and what looks like a hot beverage.

The month of everything happening continues with the Toronto Film Festival and Hidden Figures is on my most anticipated list (see also La La LandManchester by the SeaColossal and Jackie). Glen Powell is pretty much the main reason I stuck with Scream Queens and he’s got the best co-star hangouts at TIFF.

Top notch prom posing skills.

Also at TIFF is Uzo Aduba and this is an incredible pre-premiere shot.

So happy that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend won a couple of Emmys over the weekend. Expect a lot more Emmy Insta next week.

I’m still confident in saying that BrainDead was my favorite show of the summer and while I am sad it is probably done, the finale kept up the absurd/fun/weird/sexy/amazing costume levels.

Is Liv getting a zombie dog? This is a serious cutie.

Masters of Sex returned this week with a promising start to the season after last year’s messiness. Niecy Nash was a welcome presence and she won’t put up with Bill’s self-pity.

The boots and jeans look works well on Joshua Jackson so thank you, Affair costume department.

Time for the weekly installment of I heart the You’re the Worst team; at work on a Saturday.

And then followed by spending the evening together.

The 2016 Comedy Actress Emmy Roundtable

15 Jun

Emmy roundtable season continues and The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled the comedy actress panel featuring an amazing lineup of Lily Tomlin, Gina Rodriguez, Ilana Glazer, Niecy Nash, Allison Janney and Rachel Bloom.

Emmy voting is now open and you can see the full list of submissions here; once again Allison Janney has a chance of picking up two awards in comedy (Mom) and drama (Masters of Sex). I’m going to be taking a closer look at the costume design submissions in the not too distant future as a specific episode is listed for each one so keep an eye out for that.THRStyling wise I prefer this (click on image for a closer look) to the drama actress pastels and satin (or bridesmaids as Kirsten Dunst accurately referred to it) with Ilana Glazer’s tuxedo dress and Rachel Bloom’s white ladysuit being my personal favorites.

The actual roundtable (which you can read here) is unsurprisingly great and continues the theme of people I would love to have a boozy lunch/dinner with.THRSo far there’s only a couple of clips on YouTube – there are more on THR – including this fantastic Rachel Bloom video which makes me feel bad that I still haven’t watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and it is  also a good reminder that Bloom used to live with Ilana Glazer.

And Allison Janney gives a good lesson in things you shouldn’t say to a famous person or when you think a person looks like a famous person. Just don’t do it.

This has been a really good THR roundtable season also extending to the equally wonderful Tony actress discussion and there will be more Emmy chat on TV Ate My Wardrobe in the coming weeks. Emmy nomination day is July 14 and the Emmys will be held Sunday, September 18.
