The Gotham Awards dominates the sartorial coverage this week with Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird taking home some of the big prizes in both the style and film stakes. There are lots of looks to drool over. I also wrote my first piece for Bustle about Call Me By Your Name and you can read it here.
A big style theme of the week is velvet and the red color spectrum. Dive in below for a lot of both.
Zoe Kazan is looking at Timothée Chalamet, how I imagine I would look at Timothée Chalamet at the Gotham Awards, where he picked up Breakthrough Actor.
Every year there is an actor who really brings it suit wise, sometimes it is a kid (see Jacob Tremblay), often it is an Ilaria Urbinati client (see Rami Malek/Riz Ahmed/Donald Glover) and now it looks like Chalamet could be set to join them. Velvet is a good place to start and this Berluit Fall suit is a cracking addition. Velvet is very on trend as you will see as you scroll through. Kazan looks delightful as ever.
The Gotham Awards delivered on the fun pairings and this photo is hilarious. Armie Hammer scrubs up well, as always and Saoirse Ronan looks resplendent in Rodarte. This is surely one of many gongs she will be picking up for Lady Bird.
Greta Gerwig is pretty in pink in Gucci and I am so happy with all the love she is getting. The year started off with 20th Century Women and the fact it is ending with all these nominations is amazing.
More Call Me By Your Name/Big Sick hangouts and more velvet dreams. Critic Tomris Laffly caught the moment Chalamet and Kumail Nanjiani hugged it out while comparing their similar styling choices.
Plus, the couple that wears velvet together stays together and Emily V. Gordon is crushing it. Leopard print pumps are the perfect shoe choice. Meanwhile, CMBYN director Luca Guadagnino takes it to the next level with his jacket and shirt combo.
I just found out that Dominique Fishback is playing Kenya in The Hate U Give (one of the best books I have read this year) and I can’t think of a better person to plat this part. Fishback crushed it recently in The Deuce and she was equally magnetic in Show Me a Hero.
I don’t always love a mullet hem, but this metallic Zac Posen frock looks stunning on her.
Mudbound director Dee Rees continues to give great coats and she is also wearing the color that is dominating this week’s column. I plan on finally watching this movie at the weekend.
At the AOL Build series for Mr. Roosevelt, Noël Wells looks cute af in an outfit I would definitely wear. In fact I have a very similar turtleneck.
With just two weeks to go until The Last Jedi opens, the Star Wars cast is beginning to make late night appearances. Here is Daisy Ridley on The Tonight Show in an Ulla Johnson Tess jumpsuit and yep, it is velvet. A simple, but striking outfit and no doubt Ridley will be making more appearances on here before 2017 is over.
What’s that? You want more velvet?! Well, InStyle does not disappoint and neither does Zendaya in matching turquoise horse print.
Addressing the current onslaught of sexual harassment and assault allegations that has besieged Hollywood, Zendaya offers up a thoughtful point about those who have opened up about their horrific experiences:
“The bravery of the women who came forward is a huge step toward making sure it’s safer for me and other young women who are just coming. I’m at that prime age right now. Twenty-one. Starting off. That’s when people take advantage and abuse their power and do terrible shit. I think it’s definitely a sisterhood.”
The second annual ‘Women in TV’ issue from The Edit is here! HBO is very well represented by Evan Rachel Wood, Yvonne Orji and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Network and streaming don’t miss out either thanks to Nicole Richie and Sarah Silverman. This is also a good mix of comedy and drama. The all-black outfits are pretty standard fair for this kind of cover, but each woman looks comfortable and fabulous in their ensemble.
Interviews cover everything from being a producer, diversity, to why it is so good to be working in TV at the moment. Evan Rachel Wood answers the latter rather succinctly and it is a point that is often made:
“I feel like [in film] after 23-ish, you go into this dead zone where you can’t play the little ingénue sexpot anymore, but you’re not quite playing mothers or doctors or lawyers yet. On TV, I see well-rounded female characters, their flaws [and] triumphs.”
TV is great, y’all.

Also to file under outfits that I adore; the ladysuit! Noomi Rapace mixes a lace cami with menswear inspiration and not only picks a great color suit, but doubles down with her pumps.
And for an entirely different take on the ladysuit. Kate Mara’s metallic Burberry number is giving futuristic retro vibes.
I can’t see a slip dress and not think about the ’90s. Throw a white baby doll tee under it/cardigan over it with Cons for that
Throwing all the flame emojis in Viola Davis’ direction because this iridescent Alberta Ferretti gown is smoking hot.

Wearing vintage Balmain to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Patron of the Artists Awards is Tracee Ellis Ross and once again her love of fashion goes deep and far back. Love the pop of red on her bag and pumps.
The LACMA Art + Film Gala was presented by Gucci so it is ruffles and lace for Kerry Washington, in a distinctive look. I continue to be enamored with everything Gucci is doing right now.
Drawing hearts around this photo of Greta Gerwig and Saoirse Ronan at a screening of Lady Bird and Ronan is driving my desire to get some velvet pants.

Another case of my jaw hitting the floor this week and Edward Enniful’s
Also having an incredible year is Emmy award winning Lena Waithe. This cover is fabulous and I love how confident her gaze is here.
We are so lucky that Michelle Pfeiffer has been having a huge 2017, culminating in Murder on the Orient Express. I am a big Poirot/Agatha Christie adaptation fan so I am cautiously excited about this movie—I really love David Suchet’s Poirot.
Daisy Ridley is going to be wearing a lot of fancy frocks over the next couple of months and she is kicking things off in glamorous style in jade-green Vivienne Westwood Couture. For more from Ridley scroll to the bottom of this post.
Thor: Ragnarok is great and it is the rare Marvel film where you can hear the director’s voice—both literally and figuratively. Here is Taika Waititi hamming it up at a screening of his new movie and
It is that time of year when awards start coming thick and fast; the start of a very long season for those actors that might get an Oscar nomination. Allison Janney is one such person and here she is at the third annual Carney Awards starting things low-key, but jazzing it up enough with her choice of jewelry.
Cold-shoulders and deconstructed shirts were the two (terrible) trends of 2017. Now it seems that every sweater, top and dress is finding it necessary to have some kind of lace/tie/ribbon on it. I am not mad about all of it, but I think I might be in a few months time.

As I mentioned near the top of this week’s “Out of the Box,” Daisy Ridley is going to be everywhere for the next two months—much to my delight—with both Murder on the Orient Express and The Last Jedi. I really love this V cover and the whole ’80s direction of
“Women like looking sexy, but it doesn’t mean we want to fuck you.” Stitch Cate Blanchett’s words onto a cushion and I will visit your Etsy store. At the InStyle Awards,
One of my favorite designers is Mary Katrantzou as her looks are never boring; this is once again the case at the InStyle Awards and this mixed textured frock on Lauren Cohan is serving up a heap of dramatic flair. Great lip color from the Walking Dead star too.
Combining two of my favorite trends—florals and ladysuits—is Kerry Washington at the 2017 GLSEN Respect Awards in Roberto Cavalli Resort 2018. This is a lot of suit to pull of and Washington does just that.
Issa Rae joined CoverGirl senior vice president Ukonwa Ojo at the Fast Company Innovation Festival and both women went super colorful with their outfit choices; bold tones are not just for summer.
Wearing all Kate Spade New York at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund show is a very fun spin on the whole preppy look and this is a sartorial path Laverne Cox doesn’t often take. It is a super cute look on her and I am definitely coveting

We’re going to be seeing a lot more from A Wrinkle in Time teen star Storm Reid and the heart emblazoned Reem Acra frock is a mix of adorable cool. Love that she’s not wearing stacked heels and this is the kind of shoe I should opt for, rather than failing to wear a pair of heels for an entire evening.
The Big Sick is one of my favorite movies of 2017 and writer
Color blocked Calvin Klein is just the thing—even if it errs on the side of too sheer—and Julia Garner’s got an excellent blue bag to match. Top marks for the bold lipstick too.
Tracee Ellis Ross at the polo is a match made in fashion fun heaven and as she mentions

I just read a profile of The Vampire’s Wife co-creator Susie Cave in British Vogue and this is
Also at the New Yorker Festival is Tracee Ellis Ross in a fabulous floral Valentino jumpsuit. I love how much fun Ross has with fashion.
So many amazing women gracing the cover of Elle this month including one of the women of the year and a TV Ate My Wardrobe fave; Queen Laura Dern.
The icon levels are high and this Cicely Tyson cover is like a breath of fresh air because age is not and should not be a factor when a fashion magazine picks their cover stars. Take note, Vogue.

Mudbound director Dee Rees tux jacket game is strong and pairing this botanical print with burnt orange is perfect for fall. It is still early doors, but there is Oscar buzz surrounding this movie and it is definitely on my most anticipated list. It will premiere on Netflix next month (November 17).
Also on the highly anticipated list is Call Me by Your Name and at the NYFF both Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet have added pattern to their looks. Chalamet’s gone subtle in Prince of Wales check and Armie’s embracing the floral trend. Results are good.
Yesterday, I went to a the LFF Jake Gyllenhaal ‘Screen Talk’ event and this is less about what he was wearing (pretty standard daytime promotion outfit) and more about getting to attend.
In more Jake news; he is now the face of Eternity by Calvin Klein alongside model and advocate Liya Kebode and four-year-old actress Leila. We are officially in fragrance season and this is both a print and TV campaign, expect those towards the end of the month. Yes, I will be swooning every single time.
