Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Mar

In the first “Out of the Box” that comes after award season it isn’t surprising that it is a quieter and more eclectic week; there’s street style, ladysuits, Paris Fashion Week, magazine covers and other public appearances. The Timeless cast got together in Washington D.C. at the Smithsonian and NEH’s History Film Forum Event. I love this show and the chemistry between the three leads is what makes it a joy to watch; as I’ve already said I really hope it gets renewed and not just so I get new book recommendations and have plenty to write about costume wise.

Matt Lanter and Malcolm Barrett are doing standard panel attire and they look fine, but it is Abigail Spencer’s matching Creatures of The Wind ’60s inspired pattern ensemble that is mesmerizing me. Also please renew this show, NBC.

Ladysuit alert and a fabulous one from Jenny Slate as she goes shirtless and makes me want to use the flame emoji. The tequila confession feels very accurate and I had a friend who broke half her front tooth because of tequila. It is fun and also cannot be trusted. No one does street style while also being a walking advert for their brand quite like Reese Witherspoon. And unlike other celeb lifestyle products (not naming names) this is both wearable and semi-affordable. The Americans returned this week – click here for my review – and Keri Russell has been doing the press rounds including a very fun interview on Live with Kelly and on the same day wearing the same fabulous outfit Russell took part in the AOL Build series (which you can watch below).

Mixing casual cool in an oversized Céline turtleneck sweater – which we have talked about on here before and is definitely the kind of thing I would want to wear every day – with a retro looking houndstooth Prada skirt, sheer pink pop socks and hot pink Manolo Blahniks.

The interview itself is fun covering a range of things about the new season including digging that hole in the S5 finale, how she feels about Elizabeth, the recent political climate, the relationships on the show and what it is like to work with your IRL boyfriend. Entering the portion of this week’s column that is dedicated to black attire and this is the kind of outfit that few can pull off; Kristen Stewart is just the person to make corset pants look effortless. At the Personal Shopper LA premiere Kristen Stewart debuted a killer looking bleach blonde crop, which I have instantly fallen in love with. Also crushing it on the cool levels (as always) is Isabelle Huppert and I’m gonna go all Tyra as she’s doing this from H to T. Those silver tip pumps are a joy and as this is at the Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week, Huppert is wearing LV. Huppert is also reigniting my desire to own a leather jacket. Also at Louis Vuitton is Michelle Williams (as one of the faces of the brand this makes sense) and this is a far edgier look than we are used to seeing her in. I am all for a style switch up even if she looks a little stiff, but that might be the March chill rather than the outfit. Love the boots and as always I would suggest a bold red lip.Switching things up entirely at Valentino with all the delicate feminine frills. A trend that could go either way and much like KStew in all things edgy, Kate Mara is the perfect person to wear something that is drape adjacent. Also that is one fabulous collar and we all know how I feel about a detailed neckline. A striking and stripped down Chrissy Teigen cover and her piece on postpartum depression is so important. Chrissy is someone I have very strong good feelings about and it is not just because her cookbook has taught me how to make incredible bacon hash browns.

The First Magazine Covers of 2017 Are Here!

4 Jan

Happy New Year, everyone! And you can tell the holiday period is over because yesterday saw a lot of publications releasing the covers of their first 2017 issues (okay some of these are technically the February issue, but whatever).

We have the annual film fest celebrating the performances of the year just before award season goes into hyperdrive – the Golden Globes are THIS Sunday – and the start of the final season of Girls countdown. Plus some bonus royals because The Crown has made me a fan apparently.adam-driver-and-viggo-wexcels at photo shoots with a vast array of talent and tends to skew a bit weird in the art direction. This year’s movie issue it is all about romance and each cover is a different pair of actors with some being a lot more awkward (looking at you Nicole) than others; this one of Adam Driver and Viggo Mortensen instantly stood out for reasons and because they are gazing directly at viewer.

Inside the issue there is more and some of the shots are more effective than others, whereas some get a lamp as a boob prop stand in (sorry Greta).

glamour-magazine-girlsIn several firsts the women of Girls get their first shared cover and Glamour produces its first all-female issue. Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive told WWD the reasons behind it came from looking at the people that made up the creative elements of previous issues and “As of the fall, only 37 percent of the photographers we were using in our own print pages were female, and 32 percent of the hairstylists…and fewer than half of the makeup artists.” So every page of this issue was created by a woman (with one exception – Michelle Obama’s makeup artist Carl Ray).

The cover is also notable because of the lack of photoshop on Lena Dunham as she has been outspoken about this in the past. The interview with the cast goes through the ups and downs of shooting Girls including who tried to quit (Jemima Kirke) in season 2. Plus you get to see which actors are closest to their characters. Those sure are some stacked platforms that even Geri Halliwell might have issues walking in.

Girls returns February 15 and you can see more from the shows on my most anticipated style list over at The Observer. This issue of Glamour is available on newsstands print and digital now.prince-harryBetween Adam Driver and Prince Harry this year is kicking off to a good forearm start.

Prince Harry appears in Town & Country this month to discuss his huge conservation project and he graces TV Ate My Wardrobe because this is a good cover and he’s my fave royal (well joint with forever fave Princess Margaret). Plus he’s dating someone from TV right now so this isn’t completely tenuous. Okay it is a little tenuous, but good on Harry for using his privileged position to do something good.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Jan

It is the first new “Out of the Box” of 2015 and after two weeks of near winter hibernation everyone is coming out to play for premieres, magazine covers, award shows and the TCA winter press tour.

Broad City S2 premiere Amy RyanBroad City returns in less than a week (Wednesday 14!) and after attending the Girls premiere a couple of days ago, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer took center stage at the Broad City premiere party. If I was ever to attempt a form of crop top then Abbi’s outfit is my platonic ideal of this with the sliveriest of stomach skin on show. Amy Ryan is one of many guest stars we can expect to see in season 3 and this is one super happy photo of awesome people.

Broad City premiereSpeaking of awesome people and because I couldn’t chose between these two photos from the premiere here are Abbi and Ilana (her white jacket is aces) doing the group party pose with SNL’s Kate McKinnon and the always amazing Carrie Brownstein (also wearing a coat to be coveted). Drawing hearts around this.

Viola DavisAt the People’s Choice Awards (which I know no one really cares about but hey there were a handful of great outfits) Viola Davis looks stunning in an Escada column of hot-pink. Plus when she won there was a good amount of shade throwing at the awful New York Times piece that was somehow intended as a compliment towards Davis. In her speech Davis said “Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty.”

Melissa McCarthyEverything about Melissa McCarthy’s outfit is a win and the leather piping gives a chic and stylish edge stopping it from being just another all black ensemble. Bonus red lipstick points.

Allison JanneyAllison Janney co-hosted these awards so there were a variety of outfits and it is this sparkly Rani Zakhem number from the red carpet is the standout. Smoking hot.

Kit HaringtonIt is going to be a weekend of a lot of dudes in suits and Kit Harington shows how it is done (even with a simple suit the tailoring can be off) at the premiere of Testament of Youth. Skinny tie perfection.

Tina Fey and Ellie KemperSwitching things up and TCA winter press tour delivered on the floral attire from Tina Fey and Ellie Kemper as they discuss their new Netflix (and previously NBC) project The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. All 13-episodes will debut March 6 and I am already obsessing over Kimmy’s super colorful wardrobe from the promo pictures.

Lena Dunham ElleLena Dunham covers the Women in TV issue of Elle and while it doesn’t quite hit the polka dot highs of her Vogue cover from this time last year, the cover shot is still a striking. Bed hair win.

Allison WilliamsAnother Girls star magazine cover and the styling of this Glamour shot is still very Allison Williams without going down the preppy or princess route. The Bottega Veneta dress and relaxed sitting/slightly hunched posing is really working for me.

Claire Danes Covers Glamour: Talks Cry Face, Feminism and Carrie’s Wardrobe

4 Dec

There’s enough time for one more magazine for Claire Danes to cover before the end of the year and Glamour’s first 2014 issue goes to the Homeland star. For any regular visitors you will know that Danes is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite and we’re always pleased with how forthcoming she is in interviews. In Glamour she discusses both personal and work related aspects of her life including her much memed cry face.

Glamour Claire DanesOne question that can produce a lot of umming and ahing from female celebrities is “Are you a feminist?” Is it because they worry about alienating some fans? Or do they simply think that feminism equates to being a man hater? Whatever the reason it is frustrating, so it’s always refreshing to see someone answer this question with clarity and passion:

“I am a feminist. And I’m so glad that Lena Dunham exists, because she is one too, and she’s quite vocal about it. Yes, women have more freedom and more influence than ever, but it’s hardly equal. It’s just not. It’s really f–king crazy. I’m sorry I’m cursing. But it’s wild that women are underrepresented [in Hollywood]. I have real anxiety about directing, and that’s something to question and challenge and correct.”

I mean not everyone will necessarily be happy with the Dunham reference as she is incredibly polarizing, but Danes has been a vehement supporter of the Girls creator – she wrote about Dunham earlier this year for Time magazine and they had this super cute Seacrest interrupting moment together on the Emmy red carpet:

Claire Danes’ cry face has been mesmerizing since Angela Chase (over at This Was TV we talked about it a lot) and when her chin begins to quiver it pretty much guarantees that I will get the misty eyes. In past interviews Danes has come across as a tad annoyed at the attention this gets, this isn’t so much the case this time as she talks about it in terms of the character she is portraying “I think people are made uncomfortable by uncensored expressions of emotion. But, you know, that’s my job. I don’t have those fears. I really have never been concerned about being beautiful on-screen. That’s just not my jam. I’m concerned about it if I’m playing a beautiful character. But it’s not relevant for Carrie.”

Oh hey it’s a super cute dog.

Moving on to Carrie’s wardrobe and the brand they favor for this character “Carrie wears a lot of Theory. That is her brand. She’s a Theory girl. It’s a lot of navy. A lot of navy. I actually forget how to wear my own clothing when I’m filming because I wear basically the same pair of jeans and a long-sleeve T-shirt and then change out of it and immediately into my pantsuit.” It makes sense for who Carrie is as a character that her clothes are very functional as her life is chaotic enough; can you imagine if they put her in the pattern clashing costumes of Mindy Lahiri? Or all the polka dots of Jess Day? Now I want to create paper dolls to switch outfits between sitcom and drama characters. Sounds like a job for Kyle Hilton.

For more Claire Danes in Glamour you can pick up an issue of the magazine on newsstands December 10.
