Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Dec

There’s a whole lot of seasonal looks this week with plenty of perfect holiday outfits including a Brooks Brothers event, a variety of premieres and some award season shenanigans. Lots of fun to be had as we near the end of this year.

For more from this week’s red carpet coverage check out the Critics’ Choice highlights, a friendship appreciation post and kicking off TV Ate My Wardrobe’s Best of 2016 coverage.christina-hendricksAt the Brooks Brothers annual holiday celebration in conjunction with St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Christina Hendricks puts a festive spin on #LadySuitWatch2016.

Those check shoes work like a charm and the belted ribbon is something you can get away with at this time of year. Plus a fabulous shade of red lipstick gives an extra pop.holly-taylorHolly Taylor is also at the same event and her Brooks Brothers ensemble is super cute (even if the shoes are too matchy matchy). I am always here for a sweater/plaid skirt combo and Taylor also gives great lip color.naomie-harrisFlorals were a big trend at the Critics’ Choice Awards earlier this week and at the Collateral Beauty premiere – I saw the trailer for this movie the other day and oh boy it reminds me of a fake 30 Rock creation – Naomie Harris continues her style domination in a bold Rosie Assoulin.

So much yellow pump envy right now.essie-davis-and-ariane-labedMy current TV obsession is Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries – a post will be coming soon – and star Essie Davis is in the new Assassins Creed movie. At the New York premiere this Martin Grant dress is ideal winter red carpet moody shimmer and co-star Ariane Labed’s mini dress is also a delight and a tad festive.elle-fanningEvery time I see the Live by Night trailer – and it is on a lot of previews right now – it makes me want to see the movie less, which is probably the opposite of its intention. However, Elle Fanning looks great at this screening in a very cool looking Carolina Herrera (pockets!) and I am very excited about 20th Century Women.hidden-figures-academyWelcome to the most fun being had at an Academy event and another movie I am super excited for is Hidden Figures. A+ outfits for all and I wish I could work my mustard beret as spectacularly as Janelle Monae and once again her entire look is every heart emoji.hidden-figuresAnd this is pure joy. Bring me more of this press tour/awards campaign.rogue-oneSo many handsome dudes in suits and a perfectly pleasant dress from Felicity Jones (it could do with being splashier if I’m being honest). Saw Rogue One at a very early morning show (talking 6.30 a.m. and now I want to watch more movies that early) and loved it. There were a lot of swoons in the direction of Mads Mikkelson and Diego Luna.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

2 Dec

Happy December! And as it is this busy end of year awards period we once again have a fun mix of “Out of the Box” entries this week.

We have already covered the Gotham Awards and got a taste of TV roundtable so this week’s column is kicking off with magazine covers, editorials and Variety’s Actors on Actors series. Plus there are some red carpet moments and an array of sartorial treats.michelle-williamsMichelle Williams covers Porter magazine and this shot is reminiscent of the 2013 Louis Vuitton campaign thanks to the choice of dark lip color and because Williams has gone with her classic signature haircut after a few years of growing it out. This cut is a classic for a reason and I’m not just saying that because she is my hair icon.  Normally when Williams covers a magazine she’s in Louis Vuitton, but Porter mixes things up with sequin Michael Kors and it is feeling all kinds of festive party outfit.

In the interview Williams talks about bestie Busy Philipps – which ticks so many boxes – and the all too real dating situation she is currently in

“My friend Busy and her husband Marc [Silverstein] said, ‘Michelle, you’re in like a blackout zone, everybody is now partnered up and you have to wait for people to start getting divorced.’ Oh my f*cking God. Are you kidding me? I’m just sitting around and waiting for marriages to crumble? Oh wow! No!”

The issue hits newsstands today and I’m sure you won’t be shocked to hear I will be picking up a copy.tom-hanks-and-viola-davisAward season brings the joy of roundtables and the Variety Actors on Actors” series, in which actors interview each other and once again the choice of pairings is a dream dinner situation.

You can watch these interviews on Variety’s YouTube channel and this one between Viola Davis and Tom Hanks is incredibly charming and informative.

This red dress looks incredible on Davis and as Alanna Bennett said on Twitter “rom com it, please, I beg of you.” I fully concur.adam-driver-and-michael-shannon

Also from this round of Actors on Actors and this conversation is as fun as the above photo implies. First up Michael Shannon gets Adam Driver to discuss his non-profit Arts in the Armed Forces – which is just a really lovely move – before they get down to the awards chat and everything else that follows is just as wonderful and unfiltered.

They discuss theater, blockbusters, how their TV work has helped and whether Kylo Ren will make an appearance on Girls.

I’d also recommend Taraji P. Henson/Ryan Reynolds, Annette Bening/Naomie Harris and Michelle Williams/Natalie Portman.alia-shawkatInterview Magazine continues its domination on the editorial and interview subject front and at the moment I am obsessed with Alia Shawkat’s Search Party (and she was also fantastic in Drunk History this week as Alexander Hamilton). This shot of Shawkat in profile wearing a Sportmax coat against a black backdrop is incredibly striking and her gaze to camera is disarming in the best way.

In the piece Shawkat talks about Search Party including what it was like to produce as well as act and how certain people were cast:

“I wasn’t necessarily, but when the Ron Livingston part was getting cast, there were a lot of names that were up and, I don’t want to take full credit for it, but I think I suggested Ron Livingston. I always had a crush on him and I just thought he was perfect for Keith. He’s such a great comedic actor without being hammy. He’s very realistic.”

I maybe yelped when Ron Livingston showed up.kate-maraNot quite hitting the heights of the space themed Valentino from last year, but Kate Mara is still crushing it in dresses with whimsical embellishments; this time opting for Dior at a screening of Man Down. The bold lip color is definitely the right direction and those shoes are also fabulous. felicity-jones-and-diego-lunaThe Rogue One press tour is here; at SiriusXM Felicity Jones and Diego Luna are serving up ‘couple hosting a dinner party’ vibes and I love Jones’ seventies adjacent Valentino floor length frock and metallic pumps combination.naomie-harris#LadySuitWatch2016 is going to end strong if this week’s last two entries are anything to go by; first up Naomie Harris in Dolce & Gabbana at a Moonlight Times Talks event. This is stunning and the houndstooth clutch is the perfect finishing touch.

I would be very scared to go anywhere near this with a glass of red wine though (as I am with all white clothing). emma-stoneAnd for something in tweed here’s Emma Stone on The Tonight Show and this is a great late night look/can I please get one? Thanks.

Best of the 2015 BAFTA Red Carpet

9 Feb

Award season stretches for months and we’ve covered a lot of red carpet events here at TV Ate My Wardrobe; with the Oscars so near it means certain dresses are being saved for the last and biggest hurrah so the BAFTAs tends to suffer. This is not to say the red carpet is awash with blah as there are plenty of style highs from last night’s awards, but you can tell some are saving the wow entrance for two weeks time.

Reese Witherspoon BAFTAReese Witherspoon switches things up from cute and sparkly at the pre-party to this plunging purple sexy Stella McCartney gown.

Monica Bellucci and Lea SeydouxWe’re going to see a lot more of Monica Bellucci and Léa Seydoux on the red carpet when Spectre comes out at the end of the year and if it is anything like this then we are in for a treat.

Amy AdamsWhile I might be slightly distracted by the mustard coat in the background, Amy Adams is striking in custom white Lanvin. What really makes this look is the beaded detail and tassel belt (which I would not be able to stop twirling).

Julianne MooreI’ve been going back on forth on Julianne Moore’s Tom Ford gown as I love the color and velvet, but my aversion to chokers thanks to 90s flashback horrors is making the collar detail not so appealing. But Moore does look fantastic particularly while clutching her BAFTA so I couldn’t leave her off this list.

Keira KnightleyI love a tea length frock and Keira Knightley’s floral Giambattista Valli is delightful.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw BAFTAAnother sumptuous pastel gown for Gugu Mbatha-Raw this time in Prada and despite the Hathaway boob dart issue this is a beautiful look.

Rosamund PikeRosamund Pike’s award season style has been a bit hit and miss and at the BAFTAs she plays it safe in black Roland Mouret; it’s nothing to go crazy for but she does look good.

Felicity Jones BAFTAA Christian Dior Couture double for Felicity Jones this weekend and while it doesn’t hit the heights of her Golden Globes Dior it captures Jones’ classic and romantic style.

Hayley AtwellThe sheer trend is one I am not too fond of, but when polka dots are featured it makes me more inclined to like it and as presenter attire this is ideal. Continuing to adore all things Hayley Atwell.

Eddie RedmayneEddie Redmayne continues his winning streak in another fantastic velvet suit. This time it is a midnight blue Armani and wife Hannah Bagshawe wears an incredible Valentino gown; only a slight hint of the lean.

James McAvoy and Anne Marie DuffWhile Anne-Marie Duff’s gown is a tad bridal (and I need some inspiration in this area so thank you) I just couldn’t resist this super adorable shot of Duff with husband James McAvoy.

Weekend Hightlights – Lady Tuxes, Sparkly Dresses, Pockets and Bill Murray

9 Feb

The glitzy awards season extravaganza dominated the weekend with Friday’s NAACP Image awards, followed by pre-BAFTA parties on Saturday (we will have a separate BAFTA show post), the DGA awards and the Grammys. One big trend is a personal favorite and ultimate clothing wish list item; the lady tux.

Anna KendrickAnna Kendrick slays in a Band of Outsiders lady tux (sans shirt) and she keeps it simple pairing it with black stilettos. This is a super chic and sexy take on menswear and while my dream version looks more like Tina Fey at the Golden Globes (mostly because I fear the falling out) Kendrick is easily one of the best dressed stars over this red carpet heavy weekend.

HaimDanielle Haim is another suit wearing vision in Stella McCartney and making up for the crochet Chloé ensemble – I know I love 70s fashion but eh not feeling this – Este is wearing. Este does get the all important bonus red lipstick points and at least they aren’t all wearing very similar outfits. The monochromatic balance in this group shot is working like a charm.

January Jones and Bill MurrayShowing how a lady tux can cause a stir is January Jones in Sandro at the DGA Awards; it’s all in the plunge and I love this spin on menswear. Oh hey Bill Murray looking delightful and like he’s come straight from a Wes Anderson movie set.

Reese WitherspoonPre-BAFTA party sparkles for Reese Witherspoon and I’m definitely into the bell shaped sleeves which elevate this from being just another cute shimmery mini dress.

Felicity JonesPockets! Felicity Jones has done many of these events in the past few months and I think it is fine to say she is looking rather tired by now. Still amazing, but tired at the BAFTA nominee pre-party. And this is why this Christian Dior Couture dress is ideal because it is simple chic and it also plays on the tuxedo; by now you know how much I like this style.

Best of the Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet: The Color Wheel

12 Jan

Red isn’t the only color that was on trend at the Golden Globes and a variety of strong hues made a dramatic impact.

Naomi WattsYellow is a color I am constantly drawn to and while it is going to be hard to top my ultimate red carpet moment Naomi Watts in Gucci is a contender for best dressed last night. Bold red lip and the snake necklace add to the impact of this look.

Julia Goldani TellesAs Samantha Powell pointed out on Twitter last night there was a serious lack of heavyweights wearing Oscar de la Renta, however The Affair’s Julia Goldani Telles is stunning in this striking blue Oscar de la Renta ball gown. More bonus lipstick points getting dished out.

Felicity JonesNow this is the kind of gown a nominee should be wearing and Felicity Jones is a standout in Dior Couture. The teal color and especially the cut with the high neckline is giving me so many good feelings. A lot of the Theory of Everything love has been directed towards Eddie Redmayne (who won last night), but it is Jones who I am in awe of.

LupitaSo this isn’t a full red carpet shot of the Giambattista Valli gown that would probably be a bit much on someone who doesn’t have the style queen prowess of Lupita Nyong’o – the bodice detail is incredible but could overwhelm – but I really wanted to include a shot of her wearing glasses. Also this is what I assume is Colin Farrell’s True Detective look.

Leslie MannAnother stunning yellow with Leslie Mann in Kaufmanfranco and I love the contrast with the bold Ferragamo green clutch. Also this red lipstick.

Amy Poehler and Natasha LyonneA pair of blue beauties and Amy Poehler’s Stella McCartney pocketed ensemble is another dress which is giving me 70s vibe. Natasha Lyonne is also working this bold shade of blue in Reem Acra.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2014 Part 2

2 Jan

One last look back to 2014 with the second part of our Best of 2014 rundown. There have been a lot of amazing style moments and here are some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s favorites from this weekly column. For Part 1 head here.

Best Magazine Cover Part 2

GOT Vanity FairThis cover came out before I’d seen any of the show and I bought the issue anyway knowing that I would want it when I had caught up. And I’m glad I did as Annie Leibovitz’s shoot is stunning and it not only showcases the incredible various costume design styles, but when else are you going to see Daenerys sitting next to Cersei with Jon Snow hanging out at the top of the pile?!

Best Sundance Couple

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson SundanceThe Sundance Film Festival is fast approaching which means winter threads aplenty and Diane Kruger’s take on layering in Ports 1961 is super chic. Joshua Jackson’s got a slightly more casual look and this is how to do couples tweed.

Best Stripes

Jessica WilliamsStripes are one of my several clothing weaknesses and Jessica Williams looks stunning in Tanya Taylor for Paper magazine’s aptly titled Beautiful People issue.

Best Teen

Kiernan ShipkaThere is only one contender here as Kiernan Shipka continues to kill it on the red carpet and she nails it pretty much every time blowing her other Mad Men co-stars out of the water. This Max Mara ensemble from back in June is slightly edgier thanks to the leather skirt and by pairing it with a soft silk white top it doesn’t go too teen rebellion. The pop of yellow is a very fun touch and I adore her.

Best Talkshow Entrance

Amy PoehlerAmy Poehler does fall fashion in the city with aplomb as she headed into David Letterman in October to promote her aces book Yes Please. Coat and boot coveting is occurring.

Best Summer TCA Part 2

Lizzy Caplan TCAAnother Roksanda stunner for TCA this time from the party portion with Lizzy Caplan in this amazing color block creation paired with equally electric Brian Atwood pumps.

Best Premiere Frock

Elizabeth BanksThis is the perfect gown for a HUGE premiere event (would also be a great Oscar dress) and Elizabeth Banks shows how it is done in Elie Saab Couture at the Mockingjay Part 1 world premiere in London.

Best Creative Arts Emmys Red Carpet

Uzo AdubaThe Emmys before the Emmys and Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba won the Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series while looking incredible in a white Costume National without looking the remotest bit bridal.

Best Critics’ Choice TV Awards

Tatiana MaslanyThe woman of many faces and Tatiana Maslany took home Best Actress for the second year in a row at the Critics’ Choice TV Awards in a Cushnie et Ochs floaty frock. The splash of red lipstick and pumps is the color injection this look needs.

Best Best Friends

Leighton Meester and Gillian JacobsWhile promoting Life Partners there has been a whole lot of TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites Leighton Meester and Gillian Jacobs much to my delight. I really love this shot of them from the LA premiere. Yes I want to get brunch with them.

Best London Fashion Week

Felicity Jones BurberryThis is from the February LFW for the Fall ’14 collections and it is all Burberry Prorsum for Felicity Jones pairing a simple lemon chiffon color sweater and a beautiful gold jacquard print pencil skirt.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Nov

Happy Friday! Time to see the best looks of the week including magazine covers, huge red carpet events, the start of award season chatter and other stylish outings in this edition of “Out of the Box.”

out 100 Samira WileySamira Wiley covers the OUT100 20th anniversary issue (along with Zachary Quinto, Sam Smith and Ellen Page – her cover is also incredibly striking) and it is a breathtaking image. This is a beautiful and stunning shot of the OITNB star and I am in awe; definitely one of THE magazine covers of the year.

Elizabeth BanksMoving on to the red carpet dress of the week as Elizabeth Banks brings it once again on a Hunger Games press tour and this Elie Saab Couture gown made my draw drop when I first saw it (in fact I’m still pretty mesmerized now). Capey train goodness and a dress that is world premiere worthy.

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington has worn some exquisite Oscar de la Renta gowns in the past and at the Baby2Baby Gala she chose this beautiful and ultra feminine floral frock. While I’m not always into the mullet hemline it works well here as it gives us a chance to see the bowed Christina Louboutin sandals.

Busy PhilippsGoing from one kind of floral gown to another at the Baby2Baby Gala and Busy Philipps is serving beaded goodness in this super pretty ensemble.

Jenny SlateAwards season is in the early stages and this means it is time for actors talking to other actors about actorly things – which if you’ve followed my roundtable discussion comments you know I am amped for this time of year. At the Variety Studio: Actors on Actors event Jenny Slate went for dressed up stylings in Marnie whereas Felicity Jones opted for simple chic in a Saint Laurent top and leather Coach skirt; both are fantastic even if they look like they might be attending different events.

gillian jacobsTory Burch celebrated a new watch collection from this brand with a Vogue soiree and a whole bunch of lovely ladies wearing (you guessed it) Tory Burch. Gillian Jacobs in a surprise move is in one of the only non-patterned looks in an LBD with an embellished neckline and waist. Perfect for anyone who wants to do the black dress thing with a slight twist.

Rashida JonesRashida Jones was also at the Tory Burch event, also in Tory Burch and I love the shape and print on this dress. Could definitely see Joan wearing this on Elementary. Red lipstick bonus points.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

7 Nov

The start of the month brings magazines galore with cover shoots and editorials making the “Out of the Box” list alongside talk show and red carpet appearances.

Natalie Dormer FlareNatalie Dormer covers Flare and I’m pretty excited to see what she will bring style wise to the Mockingjay press tour that is about to dominate red carpet coverage. For now Dormer is still showing off the remnants of her Hunger Games dramatic hair style and wearing a daring knockout dress that I would love to see come premiere time.

In the interview Dormer offers up some opinion on the different types of roles there are and it is refreshing to see a lack of sugar-coating “We don’t accept women as antiheroes the way we do the men. Unless there’s a family get-out clause. We accept women being complete cunts if they’re doing it for a child.” She also loves playing Moriarty on Elementary and she is very happy with her Game of Thrones character as “The beautiful thing about Margaery is that even though she keeps getting married, she’s not defined by a love interest. And Cressida is defined by her profession and her political beliefs. Since Anne Boleyn, I haven’t played a woman who’s defined by romantic love.”

TimeOutTime Out New York dedicates this week’s issue to comedy with a focus on the “funny women taking over NYC.” This includes Jessica Williams, SNL’s Sasheer Zamata, new Broad City writer Kara Klenk plus Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. There’s the Catch-22 aspect of why do we have to do a gender specific comedy issue, but at the same time having a cover like this that doesn’t ask “Are Women Funny?” is an improvement.

Claire Danes GlamourBack to editorial and Claire Danes covers the December issues of UK Glamour and wears this fantastic Dolce & Gabbana squirrel skirt and lace top. In the interview she talks ’90s fashion and her explanation bears an echo of an Angela Chase voiceover “I wore a lot of overalls. Baggy clothes were very convenient for my generation. Our bodies were undergoing a terrifying metamorphosis, so it was a relief to put a bag over it all, hide in a sea of clothes.”

Eve HewsonThe Knick’s Eve Hewson attended the Dior hosted Guggenheim International Gala Pre-Party on Wednesday in (and this is not surprising) Dior. Not only does this dress earn the pocket points, it is also a fun play on tweed. I often have black tights dress quandaries (when it hits colder temps I tend to wear them with certain dresses and just say fuck it) and here they don’t detract from the look so maybe I will be less black tights nervy in the future.

Lucy HaleLucy Hale is stunning in red at the CMA Awards and this Romona Keveza frock might be a style best for the Pretty Little Liars star.

Lisa Kudrow Comeback premiereIt is worth repeating that I am beyond excited for the return of The Comeback and at the premiere Lisa Kudrow looks elegant in a Reem Acra dress. The Valerie hair behind her gives her volume that almost reaches Kacey Musgraves CMA Awards heights.

Felicity Jones FallonRounding things off this week with a spin on menswear and Felicity Jones appeared on The Tonight Show this week in a beautiful Dior suit and skinny tie.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

21 Feb

More fashion week material (this time from London), promoting new shows, magazine covers and a sneak look at my new favorite Mindy costume.

Peter Dinklage EsquirePeter Dinklage covers the Style issue of Esquire and is looking cool as fuck. While I still haven’t seen Game of Thrones (I know) I did finally see The Station Agent recently and Dinklage is all kinds of terrific (as is the rest of the impressive cast). And yes I really should get a move on with Game of Thrones as I had to block my ears at dinner last night when it was being discussed and for all the costuming reasons.

Felicity Jones BurberryFelicity Jones attended the Burberry Prorsum London Fashion Week show and she looks resplendent in a simple lemon chiffon color sweater and gold jacquard print pencil skirt. This is from the same pre-fall 2014 collection discussed as part of the Fantasy Costuming series earlier this week. Jones will be appearing on this season of Girls and she was also Hysteria, the movie I watched yesterday afternoon thanks to the stinking head cold I have right now. It felt like a prequel of sorts to Masters of Sex and the Hugh Dancy element helped with the pre-Hannibal anticipation (it’s back in one week!).

Mindy KalingMindy Kaling posted the above shot on Instagram a couple of days ago calling it “Costume of the week.” This is a well deserved title, even if it hasn’t graced screens yet (The Mindy Project is back April 1) and I have a weakness for yellow coats – Mindy has a lot of amazing coats in many different colors. Pairing it with two different monochrome patterns (hearts and checks) works in that Mindy bold clashing way and it’s a fun outfit.

Minnie DriverMinnie Driver is promoting About a Boy (previewing this Saturday) and I’m looking forward to it (Katims! David Walton!) and also slightly dubious as I really like the book/movie and the reviews have been pretty lukewarm. I’m sure I’ll still give it a watch. Driver’s splatter pattern Vivienne Westwood Anglomania frock with its irregular hemline mixes things up while also being the perfect dress for an appearance on Extra – though as usual the dude (the dreamy David Walton) gets to go super casual in jeans and sweater (you can see a sliver of him in the background on the right). I would be very much down with Driver opting for jeans over dresses, but hey this could have been as much her decision as his, but it just makes me think of all those Catching Fire photocalls of Jennifer Lawrence Diored to the max and the guys rocking up in standard day clothes. (*slight rant over*)
