Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

22 Jul

Plenty of casts from fall shows have returned to set for their new seasons so while we have to wait until September to see the fruits of their labor, it is maybe time to infer things from the behind the scenes sneak peeks. Plus reunions, cute outfits and TV watching faces.

Belfast airport is the place to spot Game of Thrones cast members as production of season 6 begins and sadly the wait for viewers is going to be a little longer than fall. Daenerys has been reunited with Missandei by a nice selection of mugs and it is no big surprise seeing Emilia Clarke and Nathalie Emmanuel heading back even if their characters are currently separated. All eyes are on another person who happened to make his way to Belfast.

Robbie Amell (who has just be cast in the new X-Files revival along with Lauren Ambrose!) and Victor Garber are back on the set of The Flash, but it’s Grant Gustin’s hoodie over his new Flash suit that I am distracted by. Maybe Barry should rock this look.

Props galore on Arrow including Felicity Smoak’s glasses, some nude pumps and what looks like some kind of weapon. What could this all mean?

In less vague costume news Bellamy Young shows off the mostly colorful Manolo Blahnik heels with a dash of Kate Spade during a ball gown fitting with Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo. Fancy pants party scenes are a favorite.

Also over at Scandal, Kerry Washington and Josh Malina go for full Superman bystander mode.

Puppies! Continuing to look like a very happy place to work is the Orange is the New Black set and it was a good week for the Netflix show as they received four Emmy nominations including Best Drama Series.

Jussie Smollett celebrates Taraji P. Henson’s Emmy nomination by posting this video of her…

This is very exciting and an appropriately mysterious shot from Rhys Darby on the set of The X-Files.

Where he also got to hang out with Kumail Nanjiani and I am thrilled Nanjiani is going to be in an episode. If you haven’t listened to his podcast The X-Files Files and you’re currently rewatching before the revival then I definitely recommend you do.

Bad form at this end as I didn’t know Joshua Jackson was on Instagram (in my defense he hasn’t posted that much before this week and I am far too distracted by Diane Kruger’s excellent feed). He’s making me long for a beach trip as a result of showing off the beautiful locations they use on The Affair. There is also a shot of something a bit more intimate that he has to wear on this show.

Masters of Sex 3.02 “Three’s a Crowd” Review: Keeping up Appearances

20 Jul

Moving from 1965 to 1966 with yet another time jump for Masters of Sex this season, albeit a much smaller one than last week as the book goes from galleys to publication. Oh and there is a small matter of Virginia’s to deal with as “Three’s a Crowd” picks up from where we left off with Bill guessing Virginia is pregnant.

Getting straight to the point and this episode covers two of my least favorite TV tropes – getting pregnant from that one off hook-up and opting out of an abortion at the last minute (Mad Men did both of these things). Of course people change their mind when it comes to terminating pregnancies for a multitude of personal reasons, however it is frustrating when it is used to ramp up tension and as a twist when it is later revealed the character is still pregnant.

Masters of Sex 3.02 Bill and VirginaThe pregnancy bombshell that ended last week’s episode set off a whole bunch of warning signs as to where this story might be headed and for the most part it worked better than I thought it would. In part this is because I had briefly forgotten Bill had such a low sperm count that there was no way it could be his. Virginia’s decision to keep the child as a way to make up for all the mistakes she has made raising Henry and Tessa coupled with her signing over custody to George last season is a misguided choice by this character; a new baby isn’t going to make everything right with how she views herself as a mother. Conversations about what a family or being a mother means is what makes this storyline worth it; pitting Libby and George against Bill and Virginia when it comes to how they view these factors.

Libby for one is furious with Virginia when she finds out she is pregnant and is so not hear for Bill’s badly told story that he has only just found out. She sits smoking in silence as he blathers on about how he didn’t notice and their marriage is as fucked as the TV he is trying to fix. Libby’s cream cable knit sweater and pants look (which I pointed out here) is as perfectly put together as she always is and for Libby appearances are what matter here. Even though she knows the baby isn’t Bill’s (thanks to her experiences conceiving his children), this will be the conclusion everyone else jumps to. After all they are actually sleeping together.

Masters of Sex 3.02 LibbyTilted head sympathy look is Libby’s nightmare scenario and for her the image of the ideal family is what she strives toward even if she is being torn apart inside. The new neighbor asking their son if she is a single parent is her ideal of hell, so people believing her husband has fathered Virginia’s baby is next level social suicide. Self-interest divides Virginia and Libby as their voices grow louder as they discuss what plan if any Virginia has. Virginia’s concern is with correcting her mistakes whereas Libby worries about reputation. There is no happy solution to this situation and this love triangle turns into four’s a crowd with the inclusion of baby daddy George.

George still loves Virginia and the idea of getting remarried will only work for him if Virginia is all in, but he can easily be swayed by money to go through with it for the sham. But he won’t be happy about it. One person who is thrilled by the marriage plan all is Libby and she sees this as a way to get Virginia out of her relationship; the looks shared by Bill and Virginia while vows are being said reveal Libby’s dream is not going to pan out. The way things seem on the outside often betray what is really going on and even when the two couples pose happily together after their spouses have been heralded inner conflict and turmoil will always trump fake smiles. For all this outward projection I have a feeling Libby is still popping those pills from last week.

Masters of Sex 3.02 Bill and LibbyIf you weren’t already aware that there are three people in both marriages then this episode really nails home that point with the B story. The Shah of Iran and his wife visit Bill and Virginia in an attempt to conceive as it is vital for the bloodline and throne that they have a child. Unfortunately his highness/your majesty has a low sperm count and conception has been an impossible task so far. Bill has his capping technique which has produced three of his own kids and after this fails he discovers the Princess has her own medical issue preventing her from ever getting pregnant.

At times the medical issue of the week is a little on the nose with how it acts as a mirror to the main action in the episode and this is certainly the case this week. And even though the whole three in a marriage talk is a little too neat for how it compares to Bill and Virginia’s situation it is still heartbreaking nonetheless. Tradition and duty can pull a person in a direction that isn’t what their heart wants for a number of reasons; in the case of the Princess who can’t get pregnant she knows her marriage is over even though this bond is one full of love. She can’t be the third person in the marriage (that Princess Diana interview springs to mind again) watching another woman raise a child with her ex even if she knows it all for pomp and ceremony.

Masters of Sex 3.02 Virginia and BillFor Bill and Virginia they can’t be together also because of circumstance and because of the still rather rigid temperament towards an unwed pregnant woman (and really I think even today the tabloids would have a field day with Virginia and Bill) the George plan is the only way Virginia can escape her temporary exile.

In Bill’s rather disastrous solo interview he gets tangled up as he tries to explain why sex is a physical urge in the same way as hunger and fatigue. This is the mid 60s and attitudes towards sex have moved on from when the show first started, but there are also morality based attitudes which remain the same and the work will be overshadowed if all anyone is looking at is Virginia’s bump questioning who the father is.

Masters of Sex 3.02 pregnant Virginia“We’ll see” is a well used phrase by any parent and it is one I have been on the receiving end multiple times and like Tessa I always saw this and the other go to answer of “maybe” as a yes, so while Tessa is an asshole in the car borrowing scene I also found myself empathizing with her. She doesn’t know that her mother has an abortion appointment and those Bob Dylan tickets as well as telling her friends she would have the car are the most important things to her in that moment. One reason why teen characters in adult dramas can irritate so much is because they are there as an obstacle and in my case it can sometimes feel all too real on occasions where they treat their parents like shit when their own self-interests are disrupted.

The time jump and sudden teen form Tessa takes has been hard to adjust to because she was this super sweet kid when we last saw her and so dealing with conflict and screaming is jarring. Showrunner Michelle Ashford addresses some of these concerns with The Hollywood Reporter and the credits disclaimer from the season premiere here and the vague comments about legal issues surrounding the kids has me more intrigued about what went down behind the scenes.

Virginia’s fears she will make the same mistakes with her children all over again and this is where tradition versus new ways of approaching motherhood come into play as Bill reassures her that maybe a working mother is not detrimental to raising children. Even when Masters of Sex stumbles there are scenes like this one which reinforce what makes the show work; when Bill and Virginia have these kinds of conversations the show sings. Much in the same way Bill does with his rendition of “Danny Boy” in an attempt to distract Virginia from painful contractions. She can be a good mother and work and the idea of a woman having it all is born! The last part is said in jest of course, but it is worth noting that Bill is told that he has it all “and I don’t have enough to stay” after he has informed the Princess there is no way she can conceive.

After several time jumps and another child added to the Masters and Johnson broods hopefully things will settle down in both of these areas as so far this has been a bumpy start to the season.

And finally a look at a fabulous and quite possibly Twiggy inspired outfit:

Breaking Up is Hard to Do on Hannibal

19 Jul

Restraints both physical and mental feature prominently on Hannibal this week as the ‘Hannibal on the run’ arc comes to an end with an incredibly satisfying, sometimes horrifying and at times very funny episode. Hannibal has remained pretty unflappable throughout being hunted; even when he was beaten and lying on his ass he still didn’t have the look of a totally broken man despite being a little broken. Throughout his ordeal at Muskrat Farm which includes being stabbed, branded, tied up and teased with how his body will be prepared for a feast he never break a sweat. This is a man who has killed people in more ways than you could ever imagine and even when he is strung up like a pig waiting for slaughter he is always a few steps ahead.

Alana even goes as far as pointing out to a cocksure Mason why you shouldn’t play with Hannibal because Hannibal is always playing. Mason’s hubris is his ultimate downfall because while it looks like his well thought out torture plan for both Hannibal and his sister is foolproof the “finer details” are always evolving and he is not as good at reading people as the trained professionals.

Hannibal 3.07 welcomeBreaking up can be hard to do and “Digestivo” deals with what are effectively two big rejections. First there is Hannibal and Will; this took a drastic turn at the end of last week’s episode with a bone saw and thankfully Hannibal’s dinner prep was interrupted by the well timed and super corrupt cops paid off with Mason’s millions. Cutting the toxic Hannibal part out of Will’s life was imperative and Jack’s advice almost ended with Will as the one being sliced and diced. Not that this threat doesn’t continue over at Muskrat Farm as Mason’s plan for Will involves wearing his face while Mason eats Hannibal. Delightful.

Will and Hannibal’s fates are entwined and rather than pitting them against each other there is this sense they can only escape alive if they do it together. This can’t be achieved without help and Alana Bloom plays an important role in their escape as well as being somewhat responsible for their capture. Not that Alana is to blame for their predicament as she was simply trying to get to Hannibal before Will did, but Hannibal’s pull is strong and Will’s intimate knowledge of his memory palace meant the hunt would be quicker than tracking fancy foods from an upmarket deli. I do wonder how long it took to sail to Italy and it does seem like there are quicker forms of travel. Sailing does have the benefit of anonymity.

Hannibal 3.07 Will Graham dinnerOne ship that has long sailed (and a ship I am still kinda on, even if at this point it makes no sense) is Alana/Will. Mason has made plenty of sleazy comments about Alana’s relationship with Hannibal, but it seems he is unfamiliar with Will’s previous romantic overtures towards Dr. Bloom. Mason does question whether he can trust Alana and he is seemingly convinced by her assurance that she had nothing to do with the plan in Italy going array; however I wonder if he would be so chill in leaving Will hanging out alone in the dining room if he knew Alana and Will were friends? He at least has to be aware that they worked together. But once again this can be chalked up to Mason’s inability to see everything that is going on around him.

Hannibal 3.07 Alana convo with WillIn the past when Will and Alana have sat down together the wide shot has been used to show them on equal footing and with a level of intimacy even when one of them is in handcuffs. In this scene Alana doesn’t sit directly opposite instead she chooses a chair slightly away from him and the wide shot is replaced with solo coverage. The sense of distance, disappointment and even anger emanates from both characters with Will taking jabs at her moral compass with her role in their capture. Basically he is being a bit of a dick, but considering his predicament and the awkward looking suit he has been made to wear I guess I can give him a pass on his tone. But Alana is not just going to sit there and take it because after all he rejected her when she went to see him at Hannibal’s home, which led her to seek another less savory avenue for capturing Hannibal.

It would be nice if she gave him an update on his dogs (which I assume she is looking after when she is not at the Verger’s) although now is maybe not the time to throw in a PS ‘Winston misses you’ remark.

Going outside the law is one of the things he sneers at her about and he asks what she thought would happen; she believed Jack and the FBI would save the day. For the second time this plan has failed, which is where the all important notion of evolution plays a vital role in how the rest of the action progresses. Will tells Alana “you have to evolve. You have to spill blood. Either by your own hand or someone else’s.”

And who do they have lying around who wants to spill some blood?

Hannibal 3.07 floral coat Hannibal 3.07 Margot furThis task needs fabulous outerwear with furs and florals being an ideal way to brighten up any pig pen. Also in terms of the Alana Bloom sartorial switch-up this coat harks back to her pre-defenestration wrap dress prints nodding towards an Alana of old. Margot is coming face to face with her former therapist and champion of all things fratricide, for Alana it is even more intense as this is the first time she is seeing her ex since he got a teenage girl to throw her out of a window. They’ve briefly talked on the phone of course, but nothing quite prepares you for seeing the dude you used to date strung up nearly naked. Will’s pep talk has spurred on Alana and not only does she take out the guard with ease using a tranq gun, but she also holds her nerve with Hannibal; she does not cry or yell. Instead she politely implores him to save Will coming down to his level face to face.

This shot and the way they are starring at each other is everything.

Hannibal 3.07 Hannibal and AlanaThe key here is saving Will and really saving Will has always been number one on Alana’s agenda even if she made some misguided choices with her love life last season. But Will is not the only one who needs to break free from Mason’s sweaty clutches as Margot has too long been controlled by her sadistic brother. Their father’s will states only Mason or another heir is the beneficiary of the estate and it is an important reminder when Mason brags about this fact that Margot’s baby plan is entwined with her desire to be free from his influence.

Hannibal is offering his services here, but he wants Margot to commit the act (he sure does like getting other people to kill) and he will take the blame offering up his hair as evidence to place in Mason’s hand. Before Alana rips it from his scalp she asks “Could I have ever understood you?” Hannibal’s reply of “no” is somewhat dismissive of her psychiatrist talents giving her the perfect impetus (along with everything else he has doe) to cause him a little pain. The foley department gets an A+ for this hair tug sound and Hannibal definitely flinches a little.

By promising to save Will, he also delivers what sounds like a threat and a half when he tells her that he always keeps his promises. Should Alana be worried for her own life? Not this week and he even helps them with another not so pleasant task involving a cattle prod and ‘milking.’ I full on snort laughed when Alana coolly revealed Hannibal knows how to use a cattle prod (of course he does). I really want a deleted scene of his this conversation went down – “Just one more thing Hannibal before you carry Will off into the sunset…”

Hannibal 3.07 pig nurseryIf you were ever under the illusion that Mason Verger is not a twisted sick fuck then “Digestivo” is here to really cement this character trait. Mason has long been toying with Margot from her tear infused martinis to the diabolical act of removing her uterus and aborting her baby. He has a surprise for her this week as he took her eggs and didn’t Humpty Dumpty them (which is a horrifying phrase which also made me laugh) but instead put them in another basket. And there is a baby! But this is not a joyful occasion and the extreme nature of where this baby is being kept hits a new level of ‘what the fuckery?’ horror for this show.

Mason’s all things pigs extends to the torture of his sister and as Will is being prepared for his face removal we see Alana and Margot cutting the baby out of the pig in a heartbreaking and disturbing moment pushing Margot towards the plan Hannibal has been suggesting all along.

Hannibal 3.07 Alana and MargotOn Hannibal there are a lot of unhealthy relationships and this episode explores breaking free of these toxic binds, but one pairing which could change this trend is Margot and Alana. Plenty is stacked against them including the circumstances which brought them together and the baggage they both carry. But who doesn’t have a stuff in their past that they’d rather forget? And I think it is important to see how they both get through this shit and their experiences with manipulators without just coming across as victims. Just look at the way the light frames them in this shot among the darkness.

I’ve talked plenty of times in the past about Alana’s position as the heart of the show, a nurturing role which places her in a position with traits which are traditionally feminine. With Margot she offers up a warmth she is probably not used to and I really hope these two can make it, but maintaining a romantic relationship on Hannibal is probably harder than staying alive on Hannibal if you are in the regular cast. Self-preservation is what Alana preaches to Will when she discusses her recent choices and yet her actions have all been about saving both Margot and Will.

Hannibal 3.07 Margot goldPost baby discovery Margot has mascara streaked cheeks and no time for Mason’s threats; she has what she needs (ta Hannibal) and it’s over. Mason’s blood stained face (courtesy of his not Will Graham mask) and general demeanor adds a farcical element further, heightened by Katharine Isabelle’s amazing line reading (and nod to Mason’s earlier declaration) of “mostly yours” had me cackling. Mason’s end is pretty fitting as he ends up being held down in his fish tank by Margot and Alana – in it together – and his eel ends up swimming into his mouth essentially asphyxiating him (which also symbolically looks a whole lot like another kind of violation). Bye Mason!

Hannibal 3.07 bloody Will Hannibal 3.07 Hannibal Hannibal 3.07 MasonOkay not quite time to finish with him as we’ve still got his dude dinner party to discuss – how did they get a chat about penis cooking followed by a shot of sausages by the Standards and Practices people?

Mason also provided some new clothes for Will and Hannibal dressing them up all nice in a way which Hannibal normally does (although the striped shirt is not his usual speed this side of the Atlantic) and the already mentioned slightly out of place Will suit. Will also ruins what was a perfectly lovely dinner (not really) by biting Cordell’s cheek and spitting out the offending part. Which leads me to other shots of Hugh Dancy from this episode looking slightly deranged.

Hannibal 3.07 Will Hannibal 3.07 Will Graham Hannibal 3.07 Will surgeryIn all fairness to him he did start the episode with his head getting cut open and then he did almost end up faceless. Not a good week for Will Graham and so it is not a huge surprise when he rejects all things Hannibal after he has been rescued. It is his time to evolve; no more mind palaces or chasing the man who has occupied his thoughts for three seasons. All Will wants to do is hang out with his dogs, his dogs that he misses more than Hannibal (burn).

Ending relationships with ties as strong as this is difficult and for Margot she had to get rid of her brother in a definitive way and while Will seems over the whole killing Hannibal notion, it is the only way he will be truly free from his influence (he just can’t help himself).

Hannibal 3.07 Will and HannibalThe bedside dismissal is pretty emphatic and the point of light in the scene gives this serene edge to the end of this affair. Well, Will thinks it is the end, but Hannibal is always playing and like an ex you can’t get rid of he has a plan to keep himself in Will’s life. Even if this means sacrificing his own freedom which he earned in stunning fashion earlier in the episode.Hannibal 3.07 breaking free Hannibal 3.07 arrested Hannibal You don’t dump Hannibal, he definitely dumps you.

Hannibal 3.07 Chiyo and HannibalAnother significant hello/goodbye occurs outside Will Graham’s home as Chiyo and Hannibal come face to face for the first time in a long time. Chiyo has acted as Jack Crawford savior with her trusty rifle and I also have to guess that he helped get her into the US after she saved his life. She’s been a character who has been neither here nor there for me in that she has acted as a peek into Hannibal’s past, but with not much else (other than another edition into the fabulous coat collection of Hannibal) beyond being a bit of a plot device and this is a shame.

Hannibal 3.07 ChiyoShe does ask the questions regarding Mischa – he didn’t kill her, but he did eat her. In the end she believes some beasts should remain free and she leaves into the night when Hannibal is arrested. Will we see her again?

Hannibal 3.07 Will glassesOh and you know what’s back at the end? Oh yeah, Will Graham’s glasses

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 Jul

A lot of great outfits have graced these pages this week thanks to Comic-Con, but don’t worry we’ve got plenty more thanks to premieres, other red carpet events and the ESPYs. Plus new entries into the all important #ladysuitwatch2015.

Brie LarsonA fun Michael Kors dress for Brie Larson at the Trainwreck premiere and the color block pleated bottom turns what could’ve been pretty dull into something wonderful.

Amy Schumer and Leslie MannLeslie Mann’s floral Dolce & Gabbana number is a delight and Amy Schumer’s super sexy and side boob showing Dion Lee number is perfect for this event. Even if I can’t stop thinking about how hot leather must be in the summer. Excellent strappy black heels from both ladies.

Zosia MametZosia Mamet gets a lot of flak for her red carpet attire, but there are some really good moments including this navy Jill Stuart keyhole frock and I am so in love with her green pumps.

Tilda SwintonThis is pretty tame for Tilda Swinton and while I saw some talk of their disappointment at this outfit, I’m gonna give some prayer hands emojis for this tailored Haider Ackermann look.

Rachel McAdams and Jake GyllenhaalTim Riggins is Rachel McAdams’ rumored beau, but she attended the ESPYs with Southpaw co-star and beard grower extraordinaire Jake Gyllenhaal. McAdams is showing off her new shorter ‘do (I’m very into her choppy True Detective bob right now) and enters the #ladysuitwatch2015 excellence list in this super sexy red Cristiano Burani ensemble.

Caitlyn JennerWearing custom Versace, Caitlyn Jenner delivers an incredibly moving speech at the ESPYS and this gown is simple chic at its best.

AnnaSophia RobbMore cute summer prints on display at the New York premiere of Irrational Man and AnnaSophia Robbs’ Giamba dress and sandals is an ideal look for this warm time of year. By the way I still miss The Carrie Diaries.

Laverne Cox and Parker PoseyBest and maybe most random “Out of the Box” pairing this week goes to Parker Posey in all her turban and glitzy glory with Laverne Cox in an Opening Ceremony mini dress and amazing yellow Kenzo bag at the Irrational Man premiere.

Kiernan Shipka and Chirstina HendricksThey didn’t get to spend very much time together on screen, but I am so here for this Mad Men duo on the red carpet and two very different takes on floral. Christina Hendricks is wearing a dreamy BCBG Max Azria maxi dress for hosting duties at the Los Angeles Confidential ‘Women of Influence’ Celebration and Kiernan Shipka opts for a very cute Giamba frock to support her former co-star; Giamba is this week’s go to brand for young starlets.

2015 Emmy Nominations Closer Look – Costumes (Updated to Include Winners)

17 Jul

Ah the Emmy nominations and the usual amounts of rage and joy were felt as the names were read out. There were the expected omissions which still caused the air to turn blue (The Americans getting nothing aside from writing and guest star and Jane the Virgin getting shut out) to the surprises (TATIANA) and out of the 14 performances on my wish list, 5 made the cut. Now let’s take a look at who has been nominated for costume design.

Game of ThronesThe costume design awards are split into two categories and unlike previous years which have mirrored the way the acting awards are divided between series and then mini-series/TV movie/special they are now organizing it by contemporary and period/fantasy. This makes so much sense and it means contemporary shows which have been overlooked in the past now get their chance to shine.

That being said there are still a few notable omissions and I cannot understand how Janie Bryant’s work on Mad Men has not been recognized. It is baffling when you consider the influence and impact this costuming has had on the way we talk about costume design (see everything to do with “Mad Style“) and runway trends. I would maybe understand if the final season of Mad Men was lacking in the nomination department overall and yet it has 11 in total.

Adding to this list of snubs with shows talked on a weekly basis here at TV Ate My Wardrobe include Ane Crabtree’s exquisite work on Masters of Sex, Jenny Gering’s subtle take on early 80s and all things excellent spy wear on The Americans and while I have fallen out of love with Scandal, Lyn Paolo’s costume design and all those wine cardigans are still on top of the game. Not to mention Diane Lockhart and Alicia Florrick’s executive attire that goes beyond boring pantsuits on The Good Wife thanks to Daniel Lawson.

One super bright and pattern filled comedy has been nominated and I am thrilled to see Salvador Perez’s name on there for The Mindy Project, but it seems like there is only room for one color soaked comedy as Tina Nigro is sadly not included for The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Going through the full list of Emmy nomination ballot submissions means I am also now sad that the “Sunday Funday” episode of You’re the Worst missed the cut (there are SO many good costumes in this one) along with the Val episode of Broad City, Halloween on Looking, the pilot episodes of Agent Carter and The Knick, plus the amazing coat filled season 3 opener of Orphan Black. I’ve only seen the first couple of episodes of Outlander and yet I know this is another big disappointment and it straddles both period and fantasy elements.

Of course not everyone can be nominated but as I scroll through the list there are some really disappointing entries that didn’t make it. Hannibal was not eligible for voting and so the initial lack of murder suit outrage was quickly subdued.

By submitting a specific episode we can see exactly which pieces they are being judged on and I am so pleased to see Daenery’s incredible dragon neckwear is featured in the Game of Thrones “Dance of Dragons” choice. Empire has two nominations and the costume design team has changed between the pilot and full season with both getting recognized.

Emmy Nomination Acting Wish List

16 Jul

Happy Emmy nomination day! In a few hours time the title of this can probably be changed to Emmy Nomination Snub Rage List and before they are announced I wanted to make a note of the performances I would love to see recognized this year. Some of these are pretty much locks and will make the cut later, while others have an outside chance and there are of course the complete pipe dream entries.

There are sure to be some that I have missed and so this list doesn’t end up turning into thesis length I’m going to narrow it down to choosing from five shows. The slight loophole (because this list is mine) is I can pick more than one person from the same show.

First up drama!

The Americans 3.10Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell (The Americans)

Many words have been dedicated to The Americans here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and a good third of those are related to the outstanding performances Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell give on a weekly basis. The real tension of this show goes far beyond wigs and spy missions; it Philip and Elizabeth’s complicated relationship that takes The Americans to the next level. Realistically I’m not sure either of them will crack into their respective categories and just in case they don’t I’ve got the perfect gif reaction lined up.

Cookie EmpireTaraji P. Henson (Empire)

There is a lot to love about Empire and at number one on pretty much everyone’s list is probably the same name – Cookie. Taraji P. Henson takes a larger than life character and imbues her with vulnerability and power (she shared her surprising inspiration for Cookie here). And when it comes to style there is no other character that wears patterns or hats quite this well. I will definitely be throwing my shoe at someone if she doesn’t get a nomination.

Carrie CoonCarrie Coon (The Leftovers)

Nobody quite made me feel their character’s pain in the same way as Carrie Coon in The Leftovers from her scream of anguish (which I just rewatched and now my keyboard is soaked in tears) in the standout episode of the season “Guest” to her silent wail in the season finale. It isn’t just her despair that made this such a great performance, but also because she injected some much needed romantic fun into a show that at times leaned so far into the darkness. I for one was thrilled to have a couple to ship.

Mad Men 7.14 Pete and PeggyElisabeth Moss and Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men)

I really want the whole cast of Mad Men to get recognized for their acting talents in the final season, but somehow Vincent Kartheiser has never been nominated for an Emmy. This is unlikely to change even if his reading of “The King ordered it” is pure Pete Campbell perfection. Elisabeth Moss made me cry (sofa confessions) and cheer so loud (roller skating, supreme office strut) which makes her my ultimate Mad Men nominee.

Orphan BlackTatiana Maslany (Orphan Black)

Even when the plot is a little bit all over the place you can guarantee that Tatiana Maslany will ground whatever craziness with whichever seestra she is playing. After three seasons it might be easy to take it from granted how she makes you forget that she is playing everyone, but I still find myself in awe every week. What makes her performance even more impressive is that when they introduced yet another clone (this time Krystal) there was an instant connection (Jordan Gavaris deserves a big shout-out here) and empathy toward her plight.

Now comedy!

The Comeback 2.08Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback)

Nothing would make me happier than seeing Lisa Kudrow repeating Valerie Cherish’s Emmy success and the return of The Comeback after 10 years could have soured the memory of the beloved ‘cancelled too soon’ show. Instead what it did was once again give a searing look at Hollywood including how it treats aging stars. The blowjob episode was devastating and hard to watch, which also makes it one of the most important moments on TV from the past year.

Broad City 2.08Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer (Broad City)

Season 2 of Broad City took everything that was great about its first year and made it even better from Val, to new BFF and Whole Foods shopping partner Bingo Bronson, Kelly Ripa and Ilana’s mother. Abbi and Ilana detailed another crazy birthday night out and gave the perfect response to being told to smile. All that is left to say is Yas Kween(s)!

Jane the VirginGina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin)

A performance that can make me laugh and cry in equal measures with Gina Rodriguez delivering (no pun intended) in both areas. The world of Jane the Virgin can be kind of out there and the show moves at a pace to rival Orphan Black, but as with Tatiana Maslany this show has a lead that can ground the crazy and make you feel every bit of pain and joy that she does.

You're the WorstKether Donohue and Aya Cash (You’re the Worst)

Another show I would give all the awards to with BFFs Gretchen and Lindsay each clinging to some expectation of the life they should be living while embracing the one they think they shouldn’t. For Lindsay this is playing wife to a husband she doesn’t love while partying with Gretchen on the side and Gretchen attempts to ignore the very real feelings she has for Jimmy. Both Kether Donohue and Aya Cash are brilliant and I still have Lindsay’s haunting drunk rendition of “This Woman’s Work” playing on repeat in my head.

Inside Amy SchumerAmy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer)

The “Last Fuckable Day” sketch from the season opener is hilarious and sadly too fucking accurate; this is one example of how good Inside Amy Schumer has been this season a long with boy band parodies which ring true to the episode long take on 12 Angry MenNow there are magazine covers galore and her movie Trainwreck is out in the US this weekend and this really is the year of Amy Schumer.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

15 Jul

An all Comic-Con special of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” with plenty of TV shows represented at the annual event held in San Diego. Get ready for plenty of cast love-ins, social media rivalries and more excellent outfits.

Hugh Dancy strikes a pose and borrows Bryan Fuller’s amazing and on point jacket.

And here is the Hannibal Pannibal trio sans flower crowns.

It was Agent Carter versus Agents of SHIELD via the Dubsmash app and while Hayley Atwell is the undisputed queen (and co-star James D’Arcy is also pretty, pretty good) the SHIELD crew had strength in numbers.

Mic drop moment indeed.

Pre full on Dubsmash battle Chloe Bennet posted a picture sandwiched between her co-star Elizabeth Henstridge (excellent cartoon eye blouse) and Hayley Atwell offering up a whole lot of confused faces.

Everything about this is exactly how I imagine it would be like to meet Bill Murray.  And it looks perfect.

Maisie Williams looks far more in her comfort zone here dancing up a storm with onscreen sister Sophie Turner in a stripy tee which I’m coveting – Maisie killed it with her outfits over Comic-Con – and all I want is for the pair to be reunited onscreen so they can burn Westeros to the ground (well at least burn Ramsay to the ground).

The pair is very happy to see each other and they even have their very own word blend name # (and the EW Instagram has a whole host of excellent behind the scenes shots from Comic-Con).

Sophie Turner also had the pleasure of hanging out with Oscar Isaac while promoting X-Men: Apocalypse and this has also been a good week for fans of Isaac as the first trailer for the HBO miniseries Show Me a Hero was released.

A full on worlds collide selfie covering Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Doctor Who (also Skins).

Sarah Paulson is all of us right now.

I was skeptical about Fear the Walking Dead (that name) but after watching the first full trailer I am so in and not just for Kim Dickens reasons. Dickens looks stunning here alongside co-stars Elizabeth Rodriguez (OITNB) and Alycia Debnam Carey (The 100).

This cast! Without fail I do that thing where I wonder where everyone else is only to remember that Tatiana Maslany is everyone else. Plus a better look at the Tatiana’s amazing outfit and the one I crowned best of Comic-Con.

Superheroes from The CW bus.

The Flash has such a likable cast that I can’t help but smile at a photo like this (and also covet Danielle Panabaker’s polka dot frock).

Comic-Con Fashion Round-Up Part 2: Panels, Parties and Photocalls

14 Jul

More Comic-Con fashion from the panels, parties and photocalls with an array of style choices from casual cool to high end chic. Yesterday we covered the annual Entertainment Weekly party and the Hannibal panel; now we’re rounding up the best of the rest from the over weekend.

Tatiana MaslanyPairing Tanya Taylor with Adidas is such a fantastic move from Tatiana Maslany and the three stripes classic jacket is giving me a strong hint of 90s Britpop nostalgia. This might be why this is my absolute favorite outfit from this year’s Comic-Con. So simple and yet so effective.

Maisie Williams Comic ConA really good style weekend for Maisie Williams and at the TV Guide Fan Favorites panel she wore a super cute white blouse paired with green shorts. Now to find out where the blouse is from as the lipstick and bunny motif is adorable.

Natalie Dormer and Sophie TurnerSo much color, print and texture coming from the Game of Thrones cast. Time to play fake photo assumption and it looks like Natalie Dormer is being super awkward around Sophie Turner as she musters up the courage to talk to her…

Sophie Turner and Natalie DormerQuickly followed by longingly gazing into each other’s eyes.

Natalie DormerThe GoT cast were hot on double panel duty (Maisie Williams for Fan Favorites, Sophie Turner with X-Men and Gwendoline Christie at Star Wars) and Natalie Dormer switched out patterned pants for a stunning Mary Katrantzou dress, which looks really great as she strides across the stage at the Screen Gems panel.

Keke Palmer and Skyler SamuelsThe Scream Queens cast were out in full effect and it only just occurred to me that I have only ever made it to the end of one season of a Ryan Murphy show – American Horror Story: Coven for some reason got me to stick it out and I can’t figure out why – and from the preview this *could* be one that sticks. Or it could be like all the others where I quit a few episodes from the end. At the panel Keke Palmer cozied up to Skyler Samuels and the orange lace and navy blazer perfectly complement each other.

Skyler SamuelsAt the photocall Samuels wore a patterned (covered with florals, lightning bolts and hearts) wrap dress for a perfect summer frock vibe.

Gwendoline ChristieWhile this doesn’t have the same sartorial flare as some of her previous outfits I still really love this shot of Gwendoline Christie posing with her Star Wars co-stars Domhnall Gleeson (excellent belt and beard combo) and Adam Driver.

Kate Mara comic conA battle armor mini for Kate Mara in Valentino.

Willow ShieldsWhat looks like an excellent homage to the 20th anniversary of Clueless with multicolor plaid for Willow Shields at the panel for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

January JonesA fun spin on the LBD from January Jones at the Fox party in a CG frock with red lipstick and curls to make the outfit pop. Plus all important pocket posing utilizing.

Ashley Madekwe FoxI’m pretty sure only Ashley Madekwe and Diane Kruger could really pull off this Self-Portrait asymmetrical crop top with matching culottes; such a fun graphic print and Madekwe has an excellent sartorial eye.

New Season 2 Key Art and Promos for The Affair Offer up New Persepctives

13 Jul

A couple of weeks ago Showtime released a first look at the new season of The Affair which teased plenty of angst, smooches and a super beardy Joshua Jackson. In that post we discussed the pre-season Emmy interview with Maura Tierney where she mentioned that the number of perspectives would be shifting from the original two with Noah and Alison and expanding to four; adding Cole and Helen to the this narrative device.

At the time I was thrilled by this news and I still am because my main issue with The Affair’s first season was that I didn’t find Noah and Alison’s relationship all that compelling. And it didn’t help when the season finale dipped into the absurd with explosive confrontations and Noah’s arrest.

The new season 2 key art pulls away from the isolated Noah/Alison pairing used for season 1 and physically inserts Cole and Helen into the image as they stare out at us while their exes remain oblivious. The tagline also suggests that just because there are more viewpoints things will not become any clearer. Oh and did I mention Joshua Jackson’s beard? Okay, I did.

Along with the new artwork Showtime has released a couple of new preview videos which hint at a whole host of conflicts born from this affair; families torn apart and the murder Noah has been accused of committing. From these videos alone I’m feeling a lot more hopeful as to the direction season 2 is going in and I’m particularly excited about the prospect of a lot more Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson.

Going behind the scenes on the photo shoot with the four core cast and Ruth Wilson asks “Are we doing Friends or are we doing angry friends?” and now I really want to see them sipping milkshakes together or hanging out by a fountain. Plus there are the usual talking heads reminding us where we left off and what is to come.

Basically I am anticipating this new season way more than I thought I would be after I watched the season 1 finale.

The Affair returns in the fall.

First Look at Oscar Isaac, Winona Ryder and Catherine Keener in Show Me a Hero

13 Jul

Between all the Comic-Con Star Wars and X-Men: Apocalypse coverage, today has involved a lot of Oscar Isaac related discussions and gifs on Tumblr. Now HBO has released the first trailer for the new David Simon miniseries Show Me a Hero and we might as well call this Oscar Isaac Day. This is an excellent way to start the week. *insert dancing gif here*

In the six-part miniseries Isaac’s plays real-life Yonkers, New York mayor Nick Wasicsko who was elected in 1987 and immediately faced a huge social issue after a federal court ordered low-income housing to be built in the wealthy part of town. This was met with much opposition and Isaac’s Wasicsko is the man caught in the middle.

Check out the trailer below including Isaac’s ‘tache, Winona Ryder asking “what you going to do?” and Catherine Keener’s rather large spectacles. Catch parts one and two on Sunday, August 16.
