New X-Files Trailer: Monsters, Flashlights and Sunglasses

27 Oct

The X-Files revival is still a few months away and so far the promotional material has mainly focused on showing the alien conspiracy angle and letting us know that Mulder and Scully are estranged. It’s not all mythology episodes and the monster of the week are also making a comeback; much to my delight. I don’t think I am alone in the opinion of preferring these types of episodes over the alien storyline, particularly when the latter became convoluted and messy.  The monsters are coming with Scully explicitly saying so in this new trailer in a tone that seems less sceptical than you might expect, but things are not always as they seem on The X-Files. Other moments to get excited about include the lack of baggy suits (although I kinda miss them), the return of Mulder’s sunglasses and some playful flashlight interactions. Yes that is a smile on Scully’s face. The feelings are still being felt. There’s also a whole lot of creepiness, some folks who are less than thrilled to see Mulder and Scully and Mulder waking up shirtless in an unnerving environment. Sounds like The X-Files I know and love.

Watch the new trailer below and head here for the first full length one.

New X-Files Trailer: Phone Calls, Shoulder Grabs and All the Feelings

29 Sep

Ever since The X-Files revival was announced anticipation levels have been slowly building with every brief clips of new footage (flashlights!), magazine cover and Instagram tease/throwback. The first full length trailer has now been unleashed just prior to New York Comic-Con – where some lucky fans will get to see the all new premiere episode – and it is full of intrigue, paranoia and good old fashioned Mulder and Scully intensity.

You can watch the whole thing below and we’ve picked some standout moments. I’ve mentioned it in the past, but it’s worth repeating that while I soured on the whole mythology side by the end of the show, my Mulder and Scully feelings were strong from start to finish.

Pencils on the ceiling/poster on the floor Mulder’s old office is missing most its furniture, but those pencils and THAT poster have survived (well the poster takes a beating courtesy of Mulder’s foot).

Perfect ‘my ex is calling and I don’t know what to do’ face Mulder and Scully are estranged in all senses, but Scully is still answering those calls. But first of all stare at the screen and a) wonder what the fuck he wants And b) wonder what the fuck to say. Although she doesn’t have too long to figure out because he’s calling from within viewing range. Way to go Mulder on the sneak visit. SURPRISE!

Mulder is still a pro at the hangdog expression  That suit is also working in his favor. Still a dick move dropping by like this.

Skinner grew a beard  And it looks pretty great.

Dramatic shoulder grab = ALL THE FEELINGS Especially when they are looking at each other like this.

Flashlights! Part of me misses the ‘Why so baggy?’ nature of their 90s looks, but the part of my brain that isn’t controlled by nostalgia is so here for these tailored suits from Hannibal costume designer Christoper Hargadon.

Scully is sceptical and thinks Mulder is pushing his luck (standard) This is an expression we have seen countless times and it is so good to see it again. In fact this is the moment which caused my already goofy grin to hit goofier heights.

Mulder believes And he will use the shoulder grab to help emphasize his point. I am also so here for that.

Smoking kills?  I’m looking forward to how they explain this one. Flashbacks is one possibility and his hand does look rather wrinkle free.

Leftovers Season 2 Artwork and New Trailer: Begin Again

10 Sep

Moving to a town which did not lose any of its inhabitants on October 14 seems like a great way to start again for Kevin Garvey on The Leftovers with his new makeshift family in tow and yet it doesn’t take long for the undercurrent of fear to take hold. As with the first trailer everything starts off well and then it all goes to hell as this new location holds as many secrets as Mapletown. Coincidence or conspiracy that all goes to shit just as they arrive bringing all their baggage (literal and figurative) with them?

Expanding on who the new characters are with Regina King providing the voiceover as Erika explains how special Jarden, Texas is – “The Jarden of Eden” – and we see how many people are flocking to this town. One thing remains the same is how no one really wants Matt to talk about what happened and he is of course going to do it regardless; suffering the consequences of his refusal to be quiet. The Guilty Remnant haven’t been consumed by the fire at the end of last season and Patty despite being dead is here to torture Kevin some more. Some ghosts are just assholes.

The Leftovers Season 2The Nora/Kevin relationship takes center stage both in the new trailer and artwork with Nora appearing as this force of light and good while Kevin is tied down. Definitely picturing Patty holding on to the rope.

This relationship offered a semblance of hope for the characters and the audience; their losses were of very different kinds but their shared fuckedupness made them an ideal couple with a hint of trouble ahead. Plus Carrie Coon and Justin Theroux have great chemistry and it will be interesting to see how their relationship grows and evolves in this new location. Even if I am full on expecting Kevin to fuck it all up somehow and the trailer hints there will plenty of obstacles for them to navigate their way through. I am fully expecting to get some use out of this other Carrie Coon role gif:

For all its season 1 messiness it was still one of my favorite shows of 2014 and it is definitely on the most anticipated list for fall.

The Leftovers returns Sunday, October 4.

Homeland Season 5 Trailer: You Can Take the Girl Out of the CIA…

27 Aug

Homeland ventures to Europe for season 5 as Germany takes center stage with Carrie getting pulled back into her old life. A breach, paranoia, explosions and a conflicted Carrie Mathison are vital Homeland ingredients and last season went a long way in restoring my faith in the show. It was still messy in places, but Brody’s death breathed new life into the show and its lead character.

There’s a lot to take in with plenty of new characters who might prompt “Hey! It’s that guy/lady!” including Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings), Sebastian Koch (The Lives of Others) and Alexander Fehling (Inglorious Basterds).

It also looks like Carrie is back to making excellent art collages or rather figuring out evidence. This isn’t quite the color wall delight, but it’s almost that good.   Plus there is a blink and you’ll miss it maybe hooking up moment between a very divisive pairing. I am firmly in the shipping camp and have been pretty much since his introduction; it isn’t as out of the blue as some suggested last year.

You’re the Worst Season 2 Trailer – How to Avoid Becoming “Disgusting Normals”

4 Aug

You’re the Worst returns next month (September 9) and the first full length trailer delivers a whole array of Jimmy and Gretchen avoiding their feelings with other distractions; including a whole lot of getting wasted and some leather underwear. Anything to prevent them from becoming “disgusting normals.”

I don’t think there are enough words to explain just how excited I am to spend time with these wonderful assholes with all of their emotional baggage, especially now that Lindsay is most likely single and Gretchen is living with Jimmy. Gretchen’s apartment prior to the fire was what you might call organized chaos or a trash heap of appliances so factoring this into the new cohabitating setup should be rather fun.

Such as Gretchen’s very different sense of home decorating style. That Kat is pretty Kool.

IMG_1722And trying to keep the heat alive with FaceTime strip club adventures. Excuse me while I covet Gretchen’s top button done up white shirt look.

IMG_1723And the aforementioned underwear and an approach to undergarments that goes beyond Gretchen’s typically effortless sexy style.

IMG_1729And getting fucked up in new and impressively outlandish ways that go way beyond naked driveway passing out.

IMG_1730Lindsay has found a way to monetize dating life and continues to wear the very best in floral summer dress attire. Meanwhile Gretchen’s sunglasses and leather jacket game are still very much on point.

IMG_1727After Lindsay’s heartbreaking rendition of “This Woman’s Work” Edgar’s intrigue levels went up to hair smelling levels and something is definitely occurring here. This something could just be Lindsay’s attempts at making Paul jealous. Don’t break Edgar’s heart, please.

First Look at Oscar Isaac, Winona Ryder and Catherine Keener in Show Me a Hero

13 Jul

Between all the Comic-Con Star Wars and X-Men: Apocalypse coverage, today has involved a lot of Oscar Isaac related discussions and gifs on Tumblr. Now HBO has released the first trailer for the new David Simon miniseries Show Me a Hero and we might as well call this Oscar Isaac Day. This is an excellent way to start the week. *insert dancing gif here*

In the six-part miniseries Isaac’s plays real-life Yonkers, New York mayor Nick Wasicsko who was elected in 1987 and immediately faced a huge social issue after a federal court ordered low-income housing to be built in the wealthy part of town. This was met with much opposition and Isaac’s Wasicsko is the man caught in the middle.

Check out the trailer below including Isaac’s ‘tache, Winona Ryder asking “what you going to do?” and Catherine Keener’s rather large spectacles. Catch parts one and two on Sunday, August 16.

Orange is the New Black Season 2 Trailer: “Prepared to Behave Like a Model Inmate”

17 Apr

It’s an all new Orange is the New Black season 2 trailer and there is now less than two months before it comes to Netflix for all your marathon watching needs. Expect drama from new and familiar faces as Lorraine Toussaint joins the cast as Vee, an old enemy of Red’s and it doesn’t look like time apart has healed these old wounds.

Piper sums up her feelings rather eloquently “This place is bullshit.” Oh yeah this trailer is NSFW. John Bennett is still embroiled in his forbidden love affair with Dayanara and he’s not handling it very well; is this whole thing going to blow up in their faces? Plus a whole lot of dancing, minor electrocutions and plenty of other shenanigans. One person notably missing from this longer look at season 2 is Doggett.

For more watch the promo below and the track is “Jungle” by Jamie N Commons & X Ambassadors.
