Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 Aug

After last week’s TCA heavy style antics we’ve got a mostly magazine and editorial “Out of the Box” with a dash of the red carpet at the end of the post.

Nylon WinonaAnother fantastic Winona Ryder cover to join last week’s New York stunner and the September issue of Nylon used to be the much anticipated (by me) TV issue. The focus has moved away from an all-TV issue, but as the cover suggests the best new shows element is still present.

This shot of Ryder is fun and mischievous showing that black and white photography doesn’t have to be all moody poses and cigarette smoke.Kristen StewartSo happy it is fall fashion season and that chunky knits are on the horizon (the shorts and tank situation I have going on is getting old). Yes this Chanel version is on the sheer side so I am predisposed to at least wrinkle my nose, but this Kristen Stewart cover for T is such a commanding image and the rest of the editorial continues in this vein. Plus there is a whole 90s vibe which ticks all the nostalgia boxes.

It is also one of the most relaxed and open interviews I have read with Stewart and she gives off a happy and content vibe while discussing her relationships “I still want to protect my personal life, but I don’t want to seem like I’m protecting the idea, so that does sort of feel like I owe something to people.” A certain ex also gets a mention by name. Julia StilesMore sweater delights with Julia Stiles in Max Mara for Interview and I find it hard to resist a starry number. While not on the same level as Winona Ryder, my fondness for Julia Stiles goes back to teendom and the movies I watched on repeat; 10 Things I Hate About You still being one in regular rotation.

On this movie and its fans Stiles comments in Interview “I think it’s really special to be a part of something that people are still watching or thinking about or interested in, or remember fondly many years later. I don’t think it’s annoying at all.”Lucy LiuLucy Liu is the new brand ambassador for Bruno Magli and she is also the face of the new super glamorous fall campaign where she crushes the beehive look and now I want Joan Watson to investigate shenanigans at an auction. Liu has also designed a shoe for the brand that is aptly called “The Lucy.” Sophie TurnerAt Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood event Sophie Turner shows off her new blonde locks and fake tats (sadly the wolfie one is under her sleeve) for her new project Huntsville. While I am lukewarm on her pumps, I am all in on the green mini.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

3 Aug

Shows back from summer hiatus while others come closer to their end. Plus cast reunions, dancing, fancy dinners at the White House and more from this week’s TV Instagram highlights.

You’re the Worst returns this month – August 31 – and I cannot wait; just look at these faces. All the heart emojis. Catch up on Hulu now and in the meantime I will be listening to this season 2 credits music playlist to get in the mood.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIfrzFNgGye/?taken-by=youretheworstfxx

But wait! There is more You’re the Worst cast antics on Instagram and I spy sunglasses to covet on Aya Cash’s head.

Keeping with the sunglasses trend and adding a big dose of “holy crap this is adorable” from Lucy Liu with her son Rockwell on the set of Elementary.

Fun getting ready pictures of Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys’ trip to the White House last night from hair stylist Brian Magallones. Cue every Russian spy joke ever and it would appear that the Obamas are fans of The Americans as they scored a prime spot at the state dinner table. Excellent dress choice by Keri Russell and a nice prelude to the Emmys next month.

Sometimes a hiatus beard happens (see Matthew Rhys) and other times in between seasons a different dye job is the thing (or this could be work related). Regardless, from this obscured shot the blonde looks great on Sophie Turner.

While we’re on the subject of Game of Thrones here is a fun reunion.

This is actually from the Fast and Furious set, but Tormund would look great with a wolfie of his own as this photo shows.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIibY6_AnTU/?taken-by=mewins&hl=en

It can be dangerous as well as super stylish on the set of BrainDead.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIn43Q2hSrC/?taken-by=daniebb3&hl=en

OITNB cast closeness continues even when one of them is away.

I am so glad I am all caught up on iZombie for a number of reasons. One is that I get to enjoy these delightful “behind the brains” shenanigans.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIbH_JUjsIs/?taken-by=imrosemciver&hl=en

Oh there’s more dancing.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIasS6LDdHn/?taken-by=rahulkohli13&hl=en

And sneaky eating. Craft service would easily be my downfall. Just look at all those pastries.

There have been a lot of missteps on UnREAL this season including keeping Rachel and Quinn apart and at loggerheads. The end of this week’s episode included a really satisfying moment that doesn’t erase everything that has come before it, but it felt good to see them together again. Also this is a really nice photo of Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIlQrdljqbp/?taken-by=therealhannahsimone&hl=en

Joining the shows that are no longer on summer break; New Girl.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BInLRoajdLM/?taken-by=januaryjones&hl=en

Last Man on Earth is also back from hiatus and January Jones continues her reign as Insta Queen.

While other shows are nearing their very end.

And in shows/onscreen pairings that I miss we have Diane Kruger and Demián Bichir back on The Bridge.

For a closer look at some of the Emmy nominated costumes including this personal fave head to the Costume Designers Guild Awards page for a lot more treats.

This photo of Michiel Huisman led to a very fun conversation about dudes in sweaters on Twitter last week and I thank him for that much needed break from work.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from Comic-Con

28 Jul

A special bonus “Behind the Insta-Scenes” column this week covering all things Comic-Con; from TV superheroes to movies. Plus casts from shows including iZombieThe Walking DeadGame of Thrones and Orphan Black descending on San Diego.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIOwP-ah3pf/?taken-by=danaigurira&hl=en

Kicking off with one of the most stylish moments from the whole convention and the Black Panther press tour and movie is already top of my Marvel most anticipated list.

More Danai Gurira and this time with her Walking Dead co-stars. Not just an excuse to see Gurira’s amazing LWD again, but also for some Jeffery Dean Morgan beardie selfie goodness.

Comic-Con Instagram is awash with the mass group cast selfie; here is the Kong: Skull Island effort. A little on the blurry side, but points for the amount of people in it.

#LipstickGoals

Behind the scenes on these group posed shots is also a big thing from Comic-Con Insta. Chris Pratt is looking in a whole different direction.

More casual style treats from Tatiana Maslany and the whole Orphan Black cast, which looks so tiny when you remember Maslany plays over 50% of the parts. Lovely to see Maslany’s double Kathryn Alexandre taking part in these festivities as she is just as vital.

When Donnie met Hodor.

One of my favorite things about Comic-Con is getting to see the Game of Thrones cast hanging with co-stars they have never had a scene with.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIQWXjYBbgN/?taken-by=grantgust&hl=en

The CW superheroes fly in style (sans super powers). For a really thorough Comic-Con journey and behind the scenes then Grant Gustin has your more than covered.

Forever Spy Daddy feels. Plus Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist are wearing the same style of Ray-Ban; superheroes in style sync.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIOE-9sDIZG/?taken-by=januaryjones&hl=en

I heart this cast hard.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIJhrjTDEMl/?taken-by=imrosemciver&hl=en

The above sentiment also applies here.

No Hannibal Panel (or Pannibal) and Comic-Con this year, but Bryan Fuller made sure Hannibal was in attendance.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIIKO6DA1f8/?taken-by=jameswolk&hl=en

James Wolk with coffee instantly makes me think of Mad Men and for that I am grateful.

8 Jun

Co-stars supporting co-stars, returning summer shows, crushes are all included in this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.” Plus plenty of stylish moments, a very cute TBT and more from the CFDA Awards.

The Mr Robot season 2 promo train is gearing up with a dash of Emmy FYC and here is an adorably stylish photo of the cast being adorable.

OITNB returns in just over a week (!) and some of the cast were in Berlin giving off serious glam vibes.

UnREAL returned this week with a strong and biting premiere; here is Shiri Appleby gifting us with a Doogie Howser flashback.

Back to the present and this pairing makes me so happy; great wcw choice.

Tonight is The Americans S4 finale and Holly Taylor not only plays one of the best teens on TV, but her notebook prop from the show is so spot on with detail even if we barely get to see this stuff on screen.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BGVPr7rHuac/?taken-by=lupitanyongo&hl=en

Lupita Nyong’o continues to get excellent backstage visitors and this week 12 Years a Slave co-star Sarah Paulson dropped by.

Keeping on this track; the Jane the Virgin cast are coming out to support Jamie Camil’s summer turn on Broadway in Chicago.

More Jane the Virgin co-stars supporting co-stars delights.

This week I found out that Kristofer Hivju is on Instagram and my Tormund crush continues to grow.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BGXwOsnwa4B/?taken-by=yahootv&hl=en

While I’m on the subject of crushes. Oh, hello. So excited to have Scott Speedman back on TV.

From inside the CFDA Awards there are some fun Lena Dunham picture hangouts (and the second Sarah Paulson appearance on here this week).

And another.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BGVBeBPipUe/?taken-by=abbijacobson&hl=en

A pre-awards look from the Broad City ladies.

From one awards show to another across the pond and another excellent group of ladies hanging out.

A whole lot of You’re the Worst feelings going on and so many heart eyes at every outfit.

Shopping while shooting the Trainspotting sequel.

Game of Thrones is back in just under two weeks and we’ve got plenty of photos from the season 6 premiere. Plus cast hangouts on and off the set, the end of The Good Wife, White House trips and Megan Fox crushing it.

I would like to live in this world forever. Still no word on the future of Agent Carter, instead let’s just relax in the wonder that is this pairing.

SMG is really getting into the Kathryn spirit on the set of Cruel Intentions. Glad to see she is still wearing her trusty cross necklace.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BECBbuvnqvI/?taken-by=maisie_williams

And now for the Game of Thrones season 6 premiere photo onslaught including Maisie Williams’ on point nail art.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEEIYK2Hqiu/?taken-by=maisie_williams

Hanging with her on screen sister in a very intimate fashion. My GoT dream is still to see this pair reunite, find Nymeria and then burn the place/the Boltons/the Freys to the ground; the new trailer promises shows both Stark women preparing to do battle of sorts and I am very excited.

Thankfully this relationship is far happier IRL.

Lena Headey gives great pre-premiere face.

While Emilia Clark strikes a pose.

Outlander returned this week and Jamie Fraser himself; Sam Heughan was the Grand Marshal at the New York City Tartan Day Parade. As a Fraser this makes me very happy indeed.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BD4aJVxKsEn/?taken-by=annetmahendru

Things happened on The Americans last week; one of those things was sadly not Nina infiltrating Elizabeth and Philip’s place of work.  Also woah look at how young Henry looks in that picture.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BD546ksqsHj/?taken-by=annetmahendru

Double Annet Mahendru and a blurry finger pistol shot with Michael Aronov. Note the Ugg boots which is always one of my favorite below the camera details that you get to see in BTS photos.

You’re the Worst IRL hangouts fill my heart with so much joy.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BD_5fz8wPrQ/?taken-by=busyphilipps&hl=en

As does everything about this.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEHUmxZipc7/?taken-by=abbijacobson&hl=en

Happy Birthday/Ellen Day, Ilana!

The end of The Good Wife and one of the best things this season has been Cush Jumbo. Can another show snap her up? Please and thank you.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BD4GKlxANNC/?taken-by=yarashahidi

This shot of Yara Shahidi at the White House is magnificent; the pose/dress/everything.

Oh hey Sweet Lady Jane, there is someone I would like you to meet and she goes by the name of Val.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEAKSXknqEe/?taken-by=jacobtremblay

Because it is midweek and Jacob Tremblay’s new puppy Rey is what we all need.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEHMvGnGJqQ/?taken-by=the_native_tiger&hl=en

This made laugh a lot and now is also a good time to mention how much I enjoyed Megan Fox on New Girl this season.

Best of the Game of Thrones Season 6 Premiere Red Carpet

11 Apr

If you want your Jon Snow red carpet fix then you will have to make do with this (plus bonus Ygritte) as Kit Harington was a no show at the Game of Thrones season 6 premiere.

This was not a surprise and it means the attention can rest on those characters that weren’t stabbed to death in the last episode of season 5; even if Jon Snow is all anyone has on their mind and it is very likely Kit Harington will be back in some capacity. The Game of Thrones red carpet is always a fun one and this year is no different.

Maisie WilliamsThe bandeau top is a hard garment to pull off on the red carpet and Maisie Williams does just this in a Emilio de la Morena ensemble. 50s meets super contemporary by pairing a high waisted floral skirt with this teeny tiny top and Maisie Williams is our standout. Emilia ClarkeVery different florals from Emilia Clarke in a strapless black gown and some really great accessorizing, but does this need a necklace? Maybe I’m so used to seeing her with that dragon choker, but I do think this needs something else, Great orange lipstick though. Nathalie EmmanuelAnd then going for a very classic look is Nathalie Emmanuel also scoring the bold lip color points. Sophie TurnerThis purple on Sophie Turner is fantastic as is the silhouette of this Stella McCartney gown and the gold choker is the ideal accessory here. Can Sansa get some power and revenge on season 6? Please and thank you.Lena HeadeyGoing for slightly more relaxed long dress styling is Lena Headey and she is working it like a charm.Kristofer Hivju and Gry MolvaerTormund definitely doesn’t have a fake beard as Kristofer Hivju’s shows on the red carpet last night and he scrubs up rather well out of his wildling leader gear. Wife and journalist Gry Molvær’s sparkly dress is an icy color treat.Joe NaufahuNew handsome dude in a tux alert and Joe Naufahu will be playing Khal Moro this season.Iwan RheonI love how shifty Iwan Rheon looks here and also that his shoes are two-tone.Amanda PeetMore florals and the photo assumption I’m getting is that Amanda Peet is bummed out that she is at another one of these events while her own excellent HBO show Togetherness aired its very last episode last night. I am also very sad about this cancellation.

Game of Thrones returns Sunday, April 24.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

4 Mar

The final hurrah of award season is here with a look at the best of the Vanity Fair party where quite a few dresses were better than the ones worn to the actual Oscar ceremony. Plus funky street style, Paris Fashion Week and talk show appearance outfit joy.Alicia VikanderNow this is what I am talking about and while I liked Alicia Vikander’s Oscar dress it just didn’t have the all heart eyes emoji factor. If she had worn this super sexy sequin Louis Vuitton dress first there might have been declarations of it not bringing the woah factor, but I think my jaw would have been on the floor. It has all the cool vibes that Vikander normally brings with the best Oscar after party accessory. Elizabeth BanksElizabeth Banks knows how to bring it and once again the reaction I had to this dress was what was missing from most of the overall red carpet. Maybe she should have been at the awards ceremony too. A caped jumpsuit isn’t the easiest of looks to pull off, but Banks does just that in Ralph and Russo. If I didn’t already have a strong idea of what I want to wear to my wedding this year then this would provide amazing inspiration.Mindy KalingThe next three looks are also upgrades from what was worn on the Oscar red carpet and Mindy Kaling stuck to her black dress with a twist theme switching Elizabeth Kennedy for custom Salvador Perez. Perez as we have mentioned on a number of occasions is the Mindy Project costume designer and his creations highlight everything amazing about Kaling’s figure. I did also love Mindy’s day after the Oscars outfit.Priyanka ChopraPriyanka Chopra’s crystal embellished Jenny Packham ensemble hits all the right sparkle spots and this looks like the kind of outfit which might be worn for a super dramatic late ’70s soap opera moment; I am so here for that.Sophie TurnerWearing Galvan for both the Oscars and the after party and Sophie Turner’s second outfit is the standout thanks its bold color. The very cool thing about both gowns is they are made from sustainable materials to promote socially responsible fashionPatricia ClarksonThere is something so soothing about Patricia Clarkson and she is always someone I am very happy to see both on screen and the red carpet. Plunging floral embroidered Alberta Ferretti and a strong red lip is an instant yes. Kirsten DunstSpring is here! And yes it did snow this week, but the sun is shining now and Kirsten Dunst’s yellow floral frock is making me forget that I am still wearing an outfit entirely made up of various chunky knits.Kate Mara H&M PFWOn the flip side I’m still aware of just how cold it still is and Kate Mara’s summer dress getting hidden by a fabulous coat at the H&M Paris Fashion Week show makes so much sense to me right now. And now for a dress that straddles the winter/summer divide and Keri Russell is crushing it with her maternity style in Valentino on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week. In the interview they discussed The Americans (which is back in just over a week!), going and buying coffee while in costume, slapping people and Felicity. Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer also appeared on this episode in what is probably my dream talk show booking (watch the whole episode here).

Thanks to makeup artist Tina Turnbow we have a closer look at not only the exquisite floral detail of the dress and those amazing earrings, but also the striking purple eyes which is giving me flashbacks to this and one of my own personal favorite eyeliners (also thanks to Turnbow).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

5 Feb

Pre-SAG Awards parties and movie premieres deliver plenty of colorful and patterned wonders in this week’s edition of “Look of the Week.”Kristen WiigGetting so many disco vibes from Kristen Wiig’s rainbow Swarovski infused Rosie Assoulin dress at the Zoolander 2 premiere with bonus sparkly Christian Louboutin pumps. This is a really good look on her. Justin TherouxAt the Zoolander 2 photocall in Rome, Justin Theroux looks very Kevin Garvey goes out for a nice dinner and I am here for it. This buttoned up polo is also very much in Theroux’s clothing wheelhouse and yep I am here for it.Alexandra DaddarioSuper cute floral mini Giambattista Valli for Alexandra Daddario at the premiere for the new Nicholas Sparks movie The Choice (a movie I will no doubt watch at some point). Laverne CoxBlam! Laverne Cox is smoking hot in Michael Costello at the Entertainment Weekly pre-SAG Awards party.Samira WileyThe Orange is the New Black cast came out strong for SAG weekend at the awards (of which they won both ensemble and actress in a comedy), pre parties and after the affair. This color is great on Samira Wiley giving her plenty of reasons to smile.Sophie TurnerGoing a little bit mod at the EW pre-SAGs party with a contemporary twist and Sophie Turner nailed it twice this week (three times if you count this excellent photo with Ryan Gosling).Rami MalekOh hey there Rami Malek! Rounding off a fabulous January in a Todd Snyder for Champion Varsity jacket and another buttoned up shirt delight.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

3 Feb

Another award show this week and that means more behind the scenes action from getting ready to after the after parties. Plus Grease: Live live, X-Files props, Empire sleep wars and some high levels of cute in our Insta round-up.

Sophie Turner is all of us in this situation at the SAG Awards.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BBRkG3zFLSc/?taken-by=kiernanshipka

Standard reaction to a picture of this pair is one that involves experiencing a lot of feelings.

Ultimate #SquadGoals

https://www.instagram.com/p/BBLlZWcwsmS/?taken-by=marisatomei

Marisa Tomei was one of our best dressed at the SAGs and her pre-show ritual looks like a whole lot of fun.

Getting stuck in awards traffic doesn’t seem so bad when Pedro Pascal and Sarah Paulson are around.

Oh, hello.

From the stage Laverne Cox gives us a view from the other side of the amazing OITNB winning cast.

And OITNB’s Emma Myles shows what the end of a SAG winning night looks like.

Kether Donohue crushed it in Grease: Live as Jan and I got a whole lot of IRL bestie feels from this post. Plus I am coveting Aya Cash’s outfit hard.

From the actual opening of the show (which was a feat of technical brilliance) and Vanessa Hudgens deserves all the kudos she is getting for her incredible performance. Great lipstick too.

Support for Grease: Live across the networks and a crossover I now want to see.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BBS6_U3ACJ-/?taken-by=channingtatum

A slightly different shot of Jenna Dewan-Tatum on her way to the Hail, Caesar! premiere and the classic ‘lying down to avoid creases’ situation.

Last night’s episode of New Girl was directed by none other than Nick Miller himself; Jake Johnson and Max Greenfield posted a shot that captures him in all his glory.

The Empire sleep wars continue.

This one ends a little more violently.

Adorable overload.

JDM smolder, Will Patton, bagels and a dog make for a good Good Wife set day.

This brow contest is too close to call.

This week’s episode of The X-Files set my giddy levels to new highs and being a huge fan of Kumail Nanjiani podcast, The X Files Files it was so great to see him in this super fun episode. This is the file Nanjiani was given and Gillian Anderson’s reaction to this gift is hilarious.

Best of the 2016 SAG Awards Red Carpet Part 1

31 Jan

Another weekend, another awards red carpet. The SAGs are always a fun one because there is just as much glam, but as with the Critics’ Choice it seems like people are able to relax and mix it up a little. Especially those who have been part of this process for what feels like half a year now.

Plenty of winning looks to scroll through and for part 2 check head here.

Alicia VikanderEverything about this Louis Vuitton geometric gown is a sequin dream and this might be the best Alicia Vikander has looked all awards season (and she has looked pretty damn good). Rachel McAdamsThis red carpet cycle has also been very good to Rachel McAdams both sartorially and professionally with Spotlight continuing its winning streak (finally seeing it this afternoon). Beaded floral Elie Saab Haute Couture serves up so much drama that I’m willing to drop my usual “this needs a red lipstick” sentiment.Kiernan ShipkaFor Mad Men’s finale hurrah – shakes fist at Downton Abby for winning – Kiernan Shipka continues to show that she isn’t just one of the best dressed teens, but one of the best dressed in a beautiful Erdem gown. Marisa TomeiMarisa Tomei is the picture of cool elegance in a green beaded long sleeve – hitting two trends of this red carpet – in Zuhair Murad. Queen LatifahA sparkly long sleeve delight for 2016 SAG winner Queen Latifah in a killer Michael Costello gown.Maisie WilliamsThe Game of Thrones cast brought it big to the SAGs with Maisie Williams showing once again that she makes some very interesting choices. This time ditching Mexican wrestlers and 90s chokers for a bold blue textured tea length Ermanno Scervino frock. I bet it has pockets.

Sophie TurnerOnscreen sister and IRL BFF Sophie Turner going a little Scarlett O’Hara in Caroline Herrera and it’s really working for her. Maybe needs a dramatic lip color to go with the high drama of the gown.

Emilia ClarkePretty in pink for Emilia Clarke getting the bold color memo in Dior Haute Couture. A dress which JLaw is probably looking at and wondering why she hasn’t been offered it.

Sarah Paulson and Pedro PascalOh Pedro Pacal, I do miss you and your fun flamboyance on Game of Thrones. I’m on the fence with Sarah Paulson’s Armani Privé dress and I’m wondering how many Koosh balls were sacrificed to make it.

Michiel HuismanYou’re welcome.

Rooney and Kate MaraRooney and Kate Mara (neither sure of how to pronounce their surname if their chat on E! is anything to go by) both in Valentino, with Rooney very much leaning into her usual style. And it’s fine because it totally works.
