Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

29 Jan

Welcome to this week’s edition of Behind the Insta-Scenes and it is a mixture of more awards shenanigans mixed in with set antics.

Mark Ruffalo couldn’t attend the SAG awards but I applaud his choice of location and pajamas upon hearing the news he had won for The Normal Heart. I love red carpet fashion (as you can probably tell) and yet I would love to see a bed wear approach more often.

Tonight! 9 pm! 👯👯 #GIRLS

Reminding everyone to watch the show by sharing this very cute photo of the Girls ladies is Allison Williams. This doesn’t reflect the emotional state of the characters at the moment, but maybe by the end of the season at least one of them will feel either professionally or personally fulfilled. Maybe.

I don’t think there’s much to add to Pedro Pascal’s already perfect caption.

Another amazing pair from the SAG awards looking foxy as hell.

Dispatches from Sundance (or returning from) and I am strongly feeling Mindy’s look. Oh and here is the amazing panel they both took part in.

The selfie that we didn’t get to see on this week’s Looking in all its glory thanks to Frankie J. Alvarez. I would like a look at all the different versions please.

10 Jul

The 2014 Emmy nominations were announced this morning (for the full list head here) and while I have many thoughts regarding the omissions – The Americans, Tatiana Maslany and The Good Wife in the drama series category just for starters – I wanted to highlight the shows that have been nominated for what we like to talk about a lot here and that is costume design.

I would have loved to see Masters of Sex, HannibalThe AmericansSleepy HollowThe Mindy ProjectScandal and The Good Wife feature in the nominations -yes all the shows I write about regularly – however it is a very strong field and some of my favorite costumes from this year are featured on this list of nominees.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 May

Another busy week of red carpets with the Cannes Film Festival in full flow so dramatic gowns galore alongside Riviera chic at the daytime photo calls. It’s not just Cannes as the Peabody Awards were presented this week and there was another premiere for The Normal Heart.

Eva GreenEva Green brings gothic spectacle in this blood-red Elie Saab Couture gown at the premiere for The Salvation and the flowing train combined with caped sleeves and an embellished bodice adds to the dramatic impact. Green’s style tends to gravitate in this direction and I’ve just watched the first episode of Penny Dreadful; the black corsets and full Victorian skirts look exquisite on Green and the costume design is fantastic.

Jess WeixlerJess Weixler plays Robin on The Good Wife and so I’m more used to seeing her in one TV’s best sweater collections. This is a big switch up and Weixler has been promoting The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby at Cannes. Weixler also attended the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala in a beautiful Honor gown. The ice blue color coupled with the petal neck detail and flowing tulle gives it a romantic feel and it’s the ideal contrasting companion to Eva Green’s blood-red dress.

America FerreraHere’s one of my favorite daytime looks from Cannes with America Ferrera sporting yellow Louis Vuitton on top with a coral M Missoni pencil skirt. It’s a fresh and colorful style choice and Ferrera has raised her red carpet game recently. This is a really super cute outfit and thanks to the overall color I can forgive the nude pumps. Ferrera also handled a really shitty red carpet situation incredibly well later that day.

Diane KrugerMullet dresses are a strange breed and it’s one trend I don’t tend to be enamored with; Giambattista Valli might be the exception as both Diane Kruger’s dress from the Peabody Awards and Lena Dunham’s Met Gala frock don’t make me recoil, quite the opposite in fact. I’ve been rather underwhelmed with Cannes this year and it is missing Kruger’s presence so I’m glad she’s working her effortless style in this statement dress as she represents The Bridge at the Peabody Awards. Mint green pumps add a fun twist and work rather well with the pink print of this ensemble.

72nd Annual George Foster Peabody AwardsMore fun prints with Doctor Who’s Jenna-Louise Coleman in Milly at the Peabody Awards. This is a really funky design and the geometric print is rather mesmerizing. The black ankle booties could be seen as a bit too clumpy for this outfit/time of year, but I think they work on this occasion and this is a red carpet look I’d quite like to nab for myself.

The Normal HeartNow to the guys and The Normal Heart premieres this weekend. Matt Bomer is of course the standout here as he continues to avoid the red carpet dude standard as he goes for a maroon twist (last week he mixed polka dots, checks and floral). Jim Parsons’ suit is simple and he looks very cute. It looks like Taylor Kitsch got ready in a hurry, but hey he’s Riggins so he’ll always get a rugged pass from us.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 May

So many red carpets this week including the several Upfronts events we have already looked at (here and here) and “Out of the Box” is covering the best of everything else. We’ve got dudes looking dapper in suits and some super cute dresses now the weather is finally of the sunshine variety.

Matt BomerThe Normal Heart is on the anticipated list and Matt Bomer is a power clashing delight at the premiere, wearing checks, polka dots and floral. This Tom Ford suit is exquisite and so is the dude wearing it.

Samira WileyThis is a fun, flirty dress on Orange is the New Black’s (which is back in under a month!) Samira Wiley and the dotty trim at the bottom make it way more than just a run of the mill navy frock.

Claire Danes and Hugh DancyHere celebrating Born Free Africa Mother’s Day Family Carnival is Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy, with Danes wearing a Marni maxi dress that is part of the exclusive Born Free range (available on ShopBop). It’s a beautiful design and it looks perfect for the warmer weather that is coming, plus it has pockets (always a bonus) and the proceeds go to an excellent cause. Dancy’s pale blue Oxford shirt and dark blue pants is the perfect complement to pinks on Danes’ dress and I’m digging his brown shoes.

Benedict CumberbatchAn event at Windsor Castle hosted by Prince William is time to bring out the big guns and once again Benedict Cumberbatch is showing just how it is done; repeating the success of this Met Gala attire this time opting for a suit rather than grandiose tails.

Rashida JonesRashida Jones is making up for the Met Gala by wearing this beautiful Tanya Taylor ensemble. The skirt has a 50s kick to it and paired with a silk ivory tee it manages to look retro without feeling costumey. The side pony tail and pink lip add a fun and simple edge; this is a really great outfit and could go toe-to-toe with some of the other floral and spring inspired looks from the Upfronts this week.

Rachel BilsonRachel Bilson looks adorable in a Mary Katrantzou floral print shift dress at the CW Upfront. The green and pink design is striking and pairing it with white Bionda Castana heels doesn’t detract, nor does it get the same blah effect a nude pair of shoes would give. The Hart of Dixie star is as delightful on the red carpet as ever.

OITNBLast night was the premiere for season 2 of Orange is the New Black and the red carpet stylings are as wildly different as the characters these women play. Taylor Schilling’s skull covered – which I first thought were Stormtroopers – Monique Lhuillier dress is a striking and bold look. Both Uzo Aduba and Danielle Brooks have gone for a different take on the full skirt/crop top trend and I love both interpretations. Aduba has gone for chic simplicity and Brooks has opted for deep purple/fuchsia, with Aduba adding a colorful pop with her lipstick choice. All three women are wearing metallic heels (once again three very different types) and they look amazing.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Apr

It’s that time of month for the newsstands to get an influx of new magazines and this edition of Out of the Box is looking at striking images from New York magazine, Vanity Fair, the annual Beautiful People issue of Paper and the The Normal Heart cast covering The Hollywood Reporter.

Cabaret[Source]

Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming are appearing on stage together in Cabaret and New York magazine is celebrating this collaboration with an amazing photo of the pair in this week’s issue. It’s a departure from how we are used to seeing Cumming as relatively buttoned up Eli Gold on The Good Wife – though Cumming has won a Tony for his previous Cabaret turn – and it’s Williams’ Broadway debut. It’s a super cool photo and there’s extra excitement for me personally as I have tickets for Cabaret this summer, if you’re a regular reader you will know how much I adore the work and styling of Michelle Williams.

Jessica Williams[Source]

The Beautiful People issue of Paper has many TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites so it was hard to pick out just one, in the end Jessica Williams is our choice because she’s rocking the Tanya Taylor stripes and for her always awesome appearances on The Daily Show. Williams also appeared on the most recent season of Girls and along with coveting all her outfits; it was good to see her flexing her acting chops on a show like this.

Kiernan Shipka VF[Source]

Mad Men returns this weekend for part one of the final season and Kiernan Shipka continues to kill it on both the red carpet and in fashion editorials. This Tommy Hilfiger ensemble is classic all American with a color block twist and I adore the hair flick that nods to the decade prior to the one Sally Draper currently lives in. I want all the good things for Shipka and that she can navigate the tricky path which is growing up on camera. So far she is doing a stellar job and I’m also glad to see editorials like this Vanity Fair one choosing age appropriate clothes for her to wear.

THR the normal heart[Source]

The Normal Heart is on the highly anticipated list and this week Jim Parsons, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo cover The Hollywood Reporter and look unsurprisingly dapper. If you haven’t seen the trailer you can watch it here and be warned the room you are in might suddenly get dusty.

TK

Bonus Taylor Kitsch from the issue and he is wearing the hell out of those Salvatore Ferragamo pants and Dior shirt. For more photos head here.

First Look at The Normal Heart

10 Mar

Here’s your first look at HBO’s The Normal Heart and Ryan Murphy’s TV movie adaptation of the Larry Kramer play of the same name has devastating written all over it (Kramer also wrote this screenplay). Covering the HIV-AIDS epidemic in the early 80s and focusing on events in New York City, this project features Mark Ruffalo, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer, Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, Jonathan Groff and Denis O’Hare (this is a whole lot of TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites).

If this teaser is anything to go by, stocking up on tissues is a must as my screen is already blurry thanks to Ruffalo’s (playing Ned Weeks) shouted plea – “I am trying to understand why nobody gives a shit that we’re dying!”

The Normal Heart airs Sunday, May 25.
