Celebrating the 75th Golden Globes with Bold Print and Color

16 Nov

It is mid-November and Golden Globe nominations are just around the corner—they will be announced Monday, 11 December—and as it is the 75th anniversary of these awards, there is of course a party.

And many of the people vying for nominations attended, because of course. A lot of them also happened to give some of the best performances of the year. Big trends of the night include bold prints and color, much to my delight. There are several late entries into the best profiles of 2017 category and Kyle Buchanan’s Vulture interview with Armie Hammer is so good that it warrants its own outtakes article. I saw Call Me by Your Name twice in the space of a week and I am still thinking about it.

Also incredible is his choice of Paul Smith suit and floral T-shirt; this event is casual enough to eschew a collar and I love this fun red carpet take. Another Ilaria Urbinati winner.Alison Brie’s Instagram is a gift for any GLOW fan right now. There are so many good BTS moments from the set, particularly with her hair. Here she has scraped it back and gone with minimal makeup, which makes sense when you’re wearing a Hugo Boss green leopard print velvet dress.  Keeping with the Community cast theme and everything about this Yvette Nicole Brown frock is perfect winter florals. Also going with a botanical print and Tatiana Maslany mixes masculine and feminine styling with aplomb. There is a reason she is a style icon around these parts.Alias Grace is one of the best shows I have seen this year and star Sarah Gadon is a revelation. Gadon is currently doing the talk show circuit (where she is charming as hell) and hopefully she will get some awards love.

And she looks pretty fabulous in Giambattista Valli at this Golden Globes celebration. On and off screen, Yvonne Orji crushes it in the sartorial stakes. An appropriately festive dress by Phuong My and a dramatic bow that doesn’t swamp her.Insecure creator/star Issa Rae goes in a different direction to her co-star and this block color Brandon Maxwell halter neck dress is making me want an afternoon cocktail. Cute without being too saccharine is Saoirse Ronan in a girlish Teresa Helbig frock and I am still desperate to see Lady Bird.13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford in lipstick print Valentino Resort is giving off super fun vibes, but would it have been too on the nose for Langford to wear lipstick as well?I would be thrilled if Tara Lynne Barr got recognized for her performance on Casual (I still think about the stripped down rendition of “Landslide”) and season 3 of this show is probably my favorite so far.

Barr also gives great party frock and colorful pumps; I would like all of this in my own wardrobe.Director Dee Rees continues to wear some of the best jackets on the red carpet and I cannot wait to see Mudbound (which arrives on Netflix tomorrow).Jessica McNamee ticks three of my favorite style boxes; the ladysuit, heritage prints and a bold lip color. More ladysuit treats from Zoe Lister-Jones in Dion Lee and I am also a sucker for the stripe long-sleeve tee with a suit thing, which Adam Scott is doing so well.More Valentino Resort and a very different look for Aubrey Plaza as she dips her two in the Little House on the Prairie pool. It looks pretty damn good.Block color and kooky shoes for another TV Ate My Wardrobe fave. Julia Garner has had a very good year and I am already excited to see what she does in 2018. Namely the Waco miniseries and how much Kimmy will be in the final season of The Americans. I should probably also watch Ozark.Oh, hello. Turtleneck with a suit achievement unlocked and I am now currently casting Sebastian Stan in my as yet unwritten 1970s set movie. It is going to be a doozy.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

10 Jun

If we were giving out an award for Best Cast on Instagram it would probably be a two-way split between Orange is the New Black and You’re the Worst; this week’s Behind the Insta-Scenes is dominated by these two shows. Plus a few other treats including the return of a Very Important show.

Orange is the New Black is back on Friday (two days to go!) and some of the cast were in Paris last week to promote the new season. Going full tourist in this beautiful shot with blue skies, pretty dresses and the Eiffel Tower.

Followed by a trip across the ocean to Brazil and Uzo Aduba was joined by Natasha Lyonne and Samira Wiley on the Netflix float at the Brazil Pride Parade. Excellent sunglasses and houndstooth action. Plus plenty of dancing I’m sure.

Post Pride bathroom selfie game is strong.

Gathering a whole host of supporting actors as part of The Hollywood Reporter’s Emmy season and Danielle Brooks gets the best shenanigans partner in Empire’s Jussie Smollett. Work that green feather boa. And I’m totally feeling the beardy snarl face.

Well isn’t this the most adorable?!

We are entering the ATX Television Festival portion of this week’s highlights and the You’re the Worst team documented their time so well that I found it hard to whittle down which photos to use.

The new ‘squeezing as many people into an elevator’ selfie option. Just look down.

“Fan girling the fuck out on her” sounds very appropriate in this situation. Also Adrianne Palicki is tall.

#SquadGoals

Creator Stephen Falk gives a good array of shots from the event including Kether Donohue’s cute yellow dress. Despite there being no barbecue photos in this collection just the mention gives me an instant craving.

This is also a very appropriate reaction from Mae Whitman. I would have zero chill in this situation.

The revival of The X-Files in the Instagram age is pretty much the ideal. See also Tumblr which is already delivering with the spoilery filming photos which I can’t resist looking at (click if you dare).

A good portion of my Instagrams are around this theme (TV watching/booze) so I am taking Diane Kruger’s Tony watching prep as a ‘stars – they’re just like us’ moment.

About last night… #Looking #Halloween

A post shared by Looking (@lookinghbo) on

Halloween in February for Looking with an excellent and high on the cringe factor episode. Bonus points for costumes which actually looked homemade rather than the TV version of homemade.

The Mindy Project excels in the guest department and what could be better than a very beardy Stephen Colbert as a priest?! Not much.

Parks and Recreation finale sadness combined with how much I heart this cast equals all the feelings.

Ben Schwartz has been posting Parks and Rec behind the scenes photos for the duration of season 7 and this is definitely one of my all time fave Jean-Ralphio moments.

Splendid dresses and posing skills from the ladies on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Even spies still want to grab a quick cup of coffee.

Happy Thursday! And yes it is time for another Behind the Insta-Scenes roundup and this week we’ve got an array of photos from sets such as Parks and Recreation (enjoy it while you can as this is the final season), The Good WifeThe Mindy Project (with a bonus special gift from Mindy) and Jane the Virgin.

Father/daughter time on The Good Wife and Sarah Steele is always a welcome sight as Marissa Gold; can she be my body woman please? I wouldn’t mind a glass of milk or a helpful snark filled bit of advice.

What better way to congratulate someone on an Oscar nomination than with a special wreath and the Wreath Witherspoon gag from The Mindy Project’s festive episode is still making me laugh a month later. Glad to see Reese Witherspoon is into this new holiday tradition.

Jenny Slate loves a t-neck (is Felicity her style icon?) and Kroll Show is giving her an outlet to wear this garment.

Going full Claire Danes as Juliet on the set of Jane the Virgin – wings like this will always conjure up Romeo + Juliet feelings – with Gina Rodriguez teasing a potential Chapter Seventeen costume look.

The all-denim Jean-Ralphio and Mona Lisa styling is still one of my favorite Parks and Recreation costume moments and hopefully we will get to see more outrageous outfits from the pair in this final season.

More from Parks and Rec’s final season (*sob*) with Retta treating us to a closer look at April’s flashback look from her very specific leaving party theme.

Another excellent Mindy Project guest star and Vanessa Williams is getting in on the amazing coat and patterned dress action.

Last Friday saw the final day of shooting on Parks and Recreation and the cast and crew thoroughly documented the day; so this week’s Behind the Insta-Scenes is going to be an all Parks special. The tag #ThankYouParksCrew is repeated along with sadness as this show comes to an end.

Group outdoors shot with a lovely park providing the backdrop.

And another bigger group photo this time in the Pawnee Courthouse and courtesy of the Douche himself, Nick Kroll. “Old Stoneface” makes an on the wall cameo.

Jean-Ralphio has always had the best biggest hair as is evident in Ben Schwartz’s photo from his first day on set back in 2009.

Writer Greg Levine shared both old and new photos including picking out Leslie’s wedding ring – the proposal is in my top 5 Parks moments – and I’m glad to see Adam Scott here for this decision,

Music Monday: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

2 Sep

Yesterday I went to see The Way, Way Back (it’s an excellent coming of age story and I never thought I could hate Steve Carell in anything) and one of the previews before the film was for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The trailer has been available online since last month but seeing it on the big screen as opposed to your phone or computer feels like a whole new experience. There are several striking things in this 2 minute snapshot of this movie – Adam Scott’s douchebag enhancing chinstrap beard being one of them – but it the minimal dialogue that stands out. It’s all about image and this is a film that uses photographs as an important narrative device.

Trailer music helps set the tone and “Dirty Paws” by Of Monsters and Men gives a feeling of sadness that builds into hope as we see Ben Stiller’s Walter Mitty embark on his daydreaming adventure. The song might not even make it into the movie as some of the best trailer music doesn’t – one example off the top of my head is “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire for Where the Wild Things Are – sometimes it’s meant to be a table setter for the soundtrack that is to come.

Watch the trailer and hear the song below. “Dirty Paws” features on “My Head is an Animal” by Of Monsters and Men.

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2014 Preview: Dressing TV’s Most Stylish Guys

19 Jun

Tom Haverford from Parks and Recreation and New Girl’s Schmidt are two of the most fashion-conscious male characters on TV at the moment and as the new Burberry Prorsum Spring 2014 collection debuted this week at a runway show in London, we wanted to continue our fantasy costuming series. The new collection features a burst of primary colors, knits, the famous Burberry trench coat and tailored suits; they are the perfect look for some of TV’s most fashionable male characters.

Burberry polka dot

Schmidt would definitely have a classic Burberry trench coat in his closet and he’d also be down with the no socks thing, this is the perfect work look for Schmidt. The polka dot scarf could be a step too far (or look like he borrowed it from Jess), but Schmidt has shown an interest in scarves last season on New Girl when he was trying to impress their new neighbors. If Kanye wore this scarf then so would Schmidt and Nick would make fun of him for doing so.

Burberry

Tom Haverford has managed to turn his love of expensive clothes into a legitimate business with Rent-a-Swag and when we return for season 6 of Parks and Recreation he’s going to have some serious competition as he refused to sell his business and a new store is opening up across the street. Tom is also still working for the Parks department and he needs a suitable but stylish outfit in case Leslie organizes another outdoor retreat or camping session. The above outfit is perfect for this; though don’t expect Tom to get too involved as he won’t want to get any mud on those shoes.

Burberry 2014

Ben Wyatt is a little more practical when it comes to his wardrobe on Parks and Recreation and while I can’t see him in those sunglasses the turquoise skinny tie is enough to brighten up his outfits without turning him into a Tom clone. Tom might give his fashion props if he ditched the plaid once in a while.

Burberry Spring 2014

Another fan of the plaid shirt is Hannibal’s Will Graham and while he has more to be concerned with than what he is wearing, a splash of color might stop him from blending into the background and disappearing into himself. Hugh Dancy used to be a face of Burberry and was also at the show yesterday at Kensington Gardens and so it only feels right that Will gets a fashion upgrade next season. That’s if he can get out of the other orange attire that he is wearing in this season 1 finale promo.

Burberry Carrie

Walt on The Carrie Diaries is a big fan of a knitted sweater and we’ve already seen him sport a similar blue shade. This outfit looks like it could be from the ’80s without looking like a strict ’80s recreation, something that The Carrie Diaries is fond of doing. Walt has been spending time in New York with Carrie over the summer and this is the perfect attire for Walt to blend in with the city look without trying too hard. Those blue suede shoes are adorable and really set the whole thing off. The sunglasses wouldn’t seem too ridiculous in the 1980s setting either.

burberry TV

When Cary wore a hoodie last season on The Good Wife my Twitter feed lit up like a Christmas tree. As Cary has set up a new firm with Alicia I think it’s time to bring back some of that casual wear as they’re bound to be working all kinds of hours to get the business up and running. This works perfectly as the hooded knit can be swapped out for a jacket for those all important meetings.

Some of the pieces in this collection by Christopher Bailey for Burberry Prorsum are probably too catwalk for even TV’s most fashion aware characters, but the sharp tailoring is definitely something that wouldn’t look out of place on these shows. Are there any other male characters that you can see wearing these types of outfits?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Jun

It’s been a week of several award shows and more Emmy related roundtable discussions and some of these have already been covered here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and feature fantastic looks. As always there are no real rules to this weekly column and it is a snapshot of what I have been watching (and looking at online) and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good.

Winner: Dr. du Maurier on Hannibal “Releves”

photoThe costuming and set design on Hannibal has been consistently brilliant with the use of red and pink tones being particularly noticeable. In this scene with Gillian Anderson’s Dr. du Maurier Jack attempts to get information regarding her discussions with Hannibal, du Maurier gives Jack very little showing that her loyalty is with her colleague and patient. We know that du Maurier was attacked by a patient, a former patient of Hannibal’s who she claims swallowed his tongue and that’s why he didn’t kill her. Later on she discusses both the visit from Jack and the attack with Hannibal and it would seem like Hannibal was involved in the attacker swallowing his tongue (the who/why/how is still very unclear).

With this latter meeting du Maurier is wearing neutral colors and almost blends in with her surroundings, it’s a very different statement from the fuchsia pink blouse in the above shot where she clearly controls the conversation with Jack and has all the power in the scene. This is not the case with Hannibal and he has some hold over her, as he does with most people as he manipulates the situation to his advantage. Why does Hannibal do this? As Hannibal tells Abigail he does things because he is “curious what would happen”, Hannibal is an observer, but he also interferes to make things happen. It looks like Abigail isn’t long for this world.

Runner Up: Sally Draper and Julie on Mad Men “Favors”

MM_611_JT_0315_0444Sally Draper didn’t have a great week on Mad Men and her friend Julie could be blamed for Sally’s despair; Julie took the note that they had written about Mitchell and posted it under the Rosen’s door, but what followed isn’t Julie’s fault but Don’s as he can’t seem to keep it in his pants. The above shot is at the very awkward dinner as Julie and Megan are both oblivious to the real reason behind Sally’s anger at her father. While both girls think that they can handle themselves in the city and with boys they are still very much children and their costumes reflect this. Together these dresses clash in both pattern and color and their hairstyles are both childlike but very different; bows and headbands/up and down.

Throughout the episode we see that Julie and Sally don’t have all that much in common besides an interest in Mitchell; Sally thinks that being smart matters, whereas Julie believes she has the art of flirting down. By the end Sally has had the more adult experience, an unfortunate one where she finds out that her father isn’t the hero she thought he was. Don attempts to spin a tale to Sally but she is old enough to know when a lie is just that. We’ve seen Sally adopt the ’60s mini skirt style as favored by Megan so will she start acting out further in teenage rebellion when it comes to her clothes as a result of this incident?

Runner Up: Comedy Actors Hollywood Reporter Emmy Roundtable

THR comedy actorsRegular visitors to TV Ate My Wardrobe know how much we enjoy a pre-Emmys roundtable and the comedy ones this year have been particularly entertaining. Matthew Perry. Jake Johnson, Adam Scott, Fred Armisen, Eric Stonestreet and Jim Parsons are the participants in the comedy actors panel (you can watch it here) and they have been styled as if they are on vacation – in the video some of them mention how the no socks aspect is not something they usually go with. Variations of blue and an array of pastel colors have been chosen for the composition and Fred Armisen’s green jacket is something I’d quite like for myself. The conversation covers a variety of topics about their current shows and past experiences, though the highlight is when it takes a surreal turn about the word “penal.”

What is your look of the week?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

7 Jun

There has been a couple of award shows this week with both the CFDA and Glamour magazine hosting glitzy affairs and the pre-Emmy nomination roundtables are in full swing. Some of these have already been covered here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and have featured some really fantastic looks. As always there are no real rules to this weekly feature and as always it is a snapshot of what I have been watching (and looking at online) and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good.

Winner: Megan Draper on Mad Men “A Tale of Two Cities”

Megan hippie lookWhile the Megan Draper theories have gone from slightly crazy to Don Draper hallucinating crazy the costuming for Megan this season has shown why Janie Bryant is so revered. Megan’s closet is huge and it needs to be as she has alternates between glamorous fashion forward pieces to her more relaxed look at home that wouldn’t look out of place in 2013. In Don’s drug induced hallucination he sees Megan in hippie attire, which matches the general look of the Hollywood party they are attending. This is the most relaxed Megan has looked all season though it’s not really Megan, but Don’s projection of the perfect version of Megan; she has quit her job and she is pregnant. The thing that drew Don to Megan in the first place was how she was with his children and California is the place where he cemented their relationship from a casual fling to fiancé. They have recently discussed the state of their relationship and even though they seem better than they have been for the entire year there is still distance (and not just the physical kind) between them. Is Megan actually pregnant or is this just wishful thinking on Don’s part?

Runner Up: Adam Scott and Amy Poehler in The Greatest Event in Television History

adam scott hart to hartLast night Adult Swim aired Adam Scott’s second “Greatest Event in Television History” and this time he teamed up with Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler to recreate the opening title sequence of Hart to Hart. Both look like they are having a ball with the late ’70s/early ’80s look and if I didn’t know any better I would think that this was a Ben and Leslie fantasy sequence – though that would probably involve either Game of Thrones or political faces throughout history.

Runner Up: Ellie Kemper at The Hollywood Reporter Supporting Actor Photo Shoot

Kemper

Ellie Kemper looked stunning at the CFDA Fashion Awards earlier this week and even though The Office has finished this doesn’t mean that this is the last we have seen of Kemper talking about her role on this show as she takes part in both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter’s Emmy discussions. Kemper talks about her experience coming onto The Office in season 5 when it was already a big hit and dealing with it finishing saying “the most emotional moment was when we filmed The Office finale. I was crying and crying, which is actually unusual for me.” I hadn’t watched The Office for two seasons but that final episode had me balling (one of these moments was when Joan Cusack revealed that she was Erin’s mother). As I said earlier in the week I really hope that Kemper gets to play roles beyond the standard girlfriend and funny best friend parts as she is a really terrific comedic actress.

What was your look of the week?

Adam Scott and Amy Poehler in the Greatest Event in Television History

7 Jun

Last year Adam Scott and Jon Hamm recreated the opening credit sequence of ’80s detective show Simon & Simon in “The Greatest Event in Television History” and now Scott is back, this time with Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler to tackle a shot for shot recreation of the Hart to Hart titles. Credit sequences have evolved since the late ’70s when Hart to Hart premiered and now it isn’t uncommon for a show to simply have a title card or a very short theme song.

This is in part down to the increased amount of commercials and a long title sequence would reduce how much can be fit into the episode and some shows such as New Girl have a long and short version of their opening music. It’s a shame in a way that credit sequences like this don’t really exist anymore, so this is a project I can fully get behind. Plus I’m missing Parks and Rec so seeing Scott and Poehler together is a bonus.

As with the last event (which can been seen over at Adult Swim) we get to see how the credit sequence came together and you might be surprised as to how little Amy and Adam like each other considering how closely they work on Parks and Rec (this is all in jest of course). Both look fantastic in their Hart to Hart costumes with Poehler rocking the feathered hair to maximum effect.
