Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Mar

Award season is over, but there is still the post-party looks to celebrate here at TV Ate My Wardrobe. It has been a good week for fashion; kicking off with the Film Independent Spirit Awards, followed by the big one. The Oscars delivered on the dress drama even if there were no big surprises in the winners department.

Now for the after-parties with Vanity Fair’s annual shindig being the big draw. Plenty of incredible looks featuring new spins on recent trends. Plus a dash of Paris Fashion Week. March is starting just as busy as the previous two months. Now I thought Janelle Monáe’s hot pink suit from the Wrinkle in Time premiere was the one, but this custom Christian Siriano fire engine red ladysuit/train combo is THE ONE.

Monáe also posted this fabulous group shot from the Vanity Fair party. So many amazing people in one photo.Lena Waithe has a strong jacket game, as witnessed at the Emmys last year. This double-breasted Ralph Lauren Purple Label check and white bow tie combo is just as fabulous.

And another amazing group shot. The official Vanity Fair photos from this party are always drool worthy, these ones by Mark Seliger continue this tradition.Queen Judith Light adds some ruffles to the proceedings; she could hold court in pre-revolution France or a 2018 Osacr party.

What a beautiful shot of Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor. All the couple goals.Sequins are not just for Christmas as this award season has proved. There are also many ways to wear sequins including combining them with my favorite kind of ensemble; the ladysuit! Angela Bassett has gone from one kind of sequin pants to another. This Teresa Helbig number is a mosaic dream.Rainbow sequins conjure up all those ’70s inspiration feelings. Constance Wu in Markarian is making me want to grab a pair of stacked shoes and dance the night away. Of course I would take those shoes off first before the dancing. I don’t want to break my ankle. I know they are trolling us. I still ship it. And Mindy Kaling is crushing it in Atelier Prabal Gurung. One day I want to be able to call Patricia Clarkson, Patty. For now all I can do is marvel at Clarkson in another incredible Christian Siriano gown from the night.Zoe Lister Jones has gone the Constance Wu dress length route in magenta Sally LaPointe, which gives a slightly cooler vibe. They also don’t have to worry about anyone stepping on their train all night. An Oscar de la Renta princess style frock for Abigail Spencer, which is super pretty. Also Timeless is back this weekend and I cannot wait.
Now for something completely different with Karen Gillan in a whimsical Ronald van der Kemp frock that looks like a mural for a nursery. That doesn’t sound like a compliment, but it is.More Christian Siriano with one final glitzy frock from the night. Busy Philipps was front and center with BFF Michelle Williams last year, much to my delight. Philipps didn’t have such a dramatic night this time, but looks fabulous nonetheless. Speaking of Michelle Williams, she attended the star-studded Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week. This look is very much in her wheelhouse. Also one of the less out there/more wearable outfits worn by the celebs in attendance. Lots of leather at Louis Vuitton including this belted shirt dress as worn by Sophie Turner. A fun switch up from the Sansa Stark fur of it all. Speaking of fur (of the faux variety), Noomi Rapace looks like she is having the most fun in this ensemble. And I’ve got used to seeing Edgar Ramirez surrounded by fashion, but not with all this hair. Yesterday was the first Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 2 table read and the first episode will be shot in Paris. I cannot wait to see what Midge will be wearing.

At the Miu Miu show, Mrs Maisel herself, Rachel Brosnahan goes for classic polka dots with a red twist.Christie is already her surname and at Miu Miu, Gwendoline Christie is serving up some Miss Marple/Poirot cast member vibes. This houndstooth coat and Peter Pan collar need to be worn by the star of the next adaptation.

Celebrating the 75th Golden Globes with Bold Print and Color

16 Nov

It is mid-November and Golden Globe nominations are just around the corner—they will be announced Monday, 11 December—and as it is the 75th anniversary of these awards, there is of course a party.

And many of the people vying for nominations attended, because of course. A lot of them also happened to give some of the best performances of the year. Big trends of the night include bold prints and color, much to my delight. There are several late entries into the best profiles of 2017 category and Kyle Buchanan’s Vulture interview with Armie Hammer is so good that it warrants its own outtakes article. I saw Call Me by Your Name twice in the space of a week and I am still thinking about it.

Also incredible is his choice of Paul Smith suit and floral T-shirt; this event is casual enough to eschew a collar and I love this fun red carpet take. Another Ilaria Urbinati winner.Alison Brie’s Instagram is a gift for any GLOW fan right now. There are so many good BTS moments from the set, particularly with her hair. Here she has scraped it back and gone with minimal makeup, which makes sense when you’re wearing a Hugo Boss green leopard print velvet dress.  Keeping with the Community cast theme and everything about this Yvette Nicole Brown frock is perfect winter florals. Also going with a botanical print and Tatiana Maslany mixes masculine and feminine styling with aplomb. There is a reason she is a style icon around these parts.Alias Grace is one of the best shows I have seen this year and star Sarah Gadon is a revelation. Gadon is currently doing the talk show circuit (where she is charming as hell) and hopefully she will get some awards love.

And she looks pretty fabulous in Giambattista Valli at this Golden Globes celebration. On and off screen, Yvonne Orji crushes it in the sartorial stakes. An appropriately festive dress by Phuong My and a dramatic bow that doesn’t swamp her.Insecure creator/star Issa Rae goes in a different direction to her co-star and this block color Brandon Maxwell halter neck dress is making me want an afternoon cocktail. Cute without being too saccharine is Saoirse Ronan in a girlish Teresa Helbig frock and I am still desperate to see Lady Bird.13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford in lipstick print Valentino Resort is giving off super fun vibes, but would it have been too on the nose for Langford to wear lipstick as well?I would be thrilled if Tara Lynne Barr got recognized for her performance on Casual (I still think about the stripped down rendition of “Landslide”) and season 3 of this show is probably my favorite so far.

Barr also gives great party frock and colorful pumps; I would like all of this in my own wardrobe.Director Dee Rees continues to wear some of the best jackets on the red carpet and I cannot wait to see Mudbound (which arrives on Netflix tomorrow).Jessica McNamee ticks three of my favorite style boxes; the ladysuit, heritage prints and a bold lip color. More ladysuit treats from Zoe Lister-Jones in Dion Lee and I am also a sucker for the stripe long-sleeve tee with a suit thing, which Adam Scott is doing so well.More Valentino Resort and a very different look for Aubrey Plaza as she dips her two in the Little House on the Prairie pool. It looks pretty damn good.Block color and kooky shoes for another TV Ate My Wardrobe fave. Julia Garner has had a very good year and I am already excited to see what she does in 2018. Namely the Waco miniseries and how much Kimmy will be in the final season of The Americans. I should probably also watch Ozark.Oh, hello. Turtleneck with a suit achievement unlocked and I am now currently casting Sebastian Stan in my as yet unwritten 1970s set movie. It is going to be a doozy.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

4 Aug

A very busy style week, which is why there is a separate TCA sartorial catch-up here. Although, as it is still in full flow there is more TCA below. Plus premieres and some September issue offerings that not only give great photos, but also deliver on the interview front. At the Defenders premiere Mike Colter looks suave af in custom Michael Andrews Bespoke – they also do a lot of the menswear tailoring on The Defenders – and this is how you wear a three-piece suit.

I’m very late to Luke Cage (I’m about halfway through the season) and am thoroughly enjoying Mike Colter in his mix of henleys and hoodies with the occasional suit. I don’t tend to love a cut out, but Krysten Ritter looking hot as hell in siren red Julien Macdonald. She stands out on her own and in the group shots with the guys. Love that she’s not toning it down on the lipstick front either.

Thankfully I am not left wondering what brand/shade it is because Ritter’s makeup artist, Nick Barose shares the Lancôme details on Instagram.Elisabeth Moss has gone all in on patterns while promoting Top of the Lake and super stylist Karla Welch is all about floral Kate Spade at the moment (see also America Ferrera below). And they are working like a charm.
Regular readers will know how much I obsess over yellow, so of course I am head over heels for Aja Naomi King’s Reformation frock that she wore to the HFPA Annual Grants Banquet. A strong week for strong lipstick. Also at the HFPA Annual Grants Banquet is Zoe Lister-Jones in a ’70s inspired Longchamp pattern dream that would look great in my closet. Lister-Jones also keeps with the lip color theme.  So much happiness in this photo of Rachel Bloom and Albert Tsai at the CBS TCA Summer Soiree. Also sadness because I miss Bert and Trophy Wife. Bloom is also wearing an ideal patterned frock for this event. As I mentioned yesterday, Louboutin red soles are perfect for TCA panels because you’re gonna see the flash of red. The same applies to striped socks for guys as Sterling K. Brown expertly shows at the This is Us session. Also, oh hey Sterling K. Brown. Looking good.America Ferrera gives great floral frock at the NBC TCA day, in a poppy covered Kate Spade and I am so here for this sleeve length. There’s a couple of looks this week that point to the changing season (yes I know it is still August, but fashion is very much thinking fall right now).September issues are being rolled out and magazines are gifting us this week with some amazing interviews/editorials. This really is my favorite time of year.

One of the best comes from Town & Country with Billie Lourd as the cover star. Lourd is about to star in the new American Horror Story and original Ryan Murphy muse Sarah Paulson is the one who conducts the interview. Murphy is not the main link between these women as Lourd’s mother Carrie Fisher, took Paulson under her wing when Billie Lourd was just 10-years old. The interview is funny, sad and insightful delivering a look into what it is like to grow up with such an iconic mother and grandmother. Plus dealing with the heartbreak of losing both women within a couple of days of each other.

It is very much worth your time and the accompanying shoot is just as fabulous. Paisley frocks and ladysuits; my ideal combination.Aziz Ansari is a stylish guy so it makes a lot of sense for him to appear on the cover of GQ Style and go to Paris Fashion Week as part of the profile. The interview itself covers everything from creative process to Ansari unplugging completely from the internet, which made me think of the Parks and Rec episode where Tom is banned from looking at screens. But a voluntary version. It goes to some very personal places and I do like an interview that doubles as an almost therapy session.

The clothes are a lot of fun and considering how much I liked the coats on season 2 of Master of None it was impossible not to pick this mustard yellow dream.Jenny Slate always gives great interviews even when she is trying to be a little more guarded than in the past as you can see in this Marie Claire profile while Slate discusses Landline (I spoke to costume designer Elisabeth Vastola about the project here).

One of my favorite profiles from this year is this Slate’s unfiltered interview with Vulture and this is something Slate brings up in terms of when only a few soundbites from a long convo spread far and wide across entertainment/gossip sites:

“It seems so naïve: You’re just talking to a nice person, and you have a really honest, beautiful conversation, and she writes about it in an honest, beautiful way. But then, it goes through all these other outlets and gets distilled. And then it can be made to seem like you were being cheap.…I didn’t mean to do that. Especially not with an experience that was so precious to me.”

Also these matching REDValentino stripe shirt and shorts are fantastic.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Jan

Coats, coats, coats are on the “Out of the Box” menu as Sundance continues and Paris Fashion Week also delivers in the outerwear department. Currently I am cocooned in knitwear so anything intended for a cold climate is a welcome sight. And with the winter weather this week comes a whole variety of black attire; both classic and somber in places. This makes sense, all things considered. kirsten-dunstGreat coat, sunglasses and red lipstick (and engagement ring, which can be seen here) from Kirsten Dunst at the Dior show on Monday during Paris Fashion Week. It might be cheesy to use the word chic here, but eh I’m gonna dive into the fromage as she looks chic af. rami-malekIn Paris a few days earlier at the Dior Homme Menswear show new face of Dior Rami Malek also gave great coat. Malek is one of the guys who features most on these pages because of his style and this brand pairing makes so much sense. Rami also crushes the patterned sweater/shirt look.abbi-and-taviI said there would be more Sundance coats and at the Vulture Sundance Spot Abbi Jacobson and Tavi Gevinson dropped by in some great outerwear while promoting Person to Person. Long and slightly oversized coats have been on trend this year and it is a great mix of effortless with smart. Gevinson’s scarf game is also top notch.

And over at Elle and Bustle they have interviews with Jacobson (Bustle gets Gevinson too) that are very relevant to my interests including how Broad City will address this current political climate.

Starting with his much needed moment of comic relief from “Hack into Broad City” from last Friday.issa-raeThe coats they keep on coming and at the ‘Power Of Story: Art Of Episodic Storytelling’ panel Issa Rae also sartorially delivers on the outerwear with plaid crossed with what looks like the inside of a beehive.hannah-simoneHannah Simone goes classic at the Band Aid premiere in Alice + Olivia off the shoulder dress. I’m excited for Band Aid and not just because it makes me instantly think of Almost Famous and it was written/directed by Simone’s New Girl co-star Zoe Lister Jones with an entirely female crew. Plus it sounds like it is a lot of fun, which is always welcome.zoe-lister-jonesZoe Lister Jones also stars in her directorial debut and she stopped by the IMDb studio in an ensemble which continues to add to my theory that Sundance has my ideal wardrobe. Another black dress but getting an oomph of color with a bold red collar. Also black patent shoes that give me so much envy as I was never allowed this style when I was a kid. The reason; I would scuff them and considering the state of all my shoes, my mother was right. But I can but dream.connie-brittonA black turtleneck sweater dress is another classic closet must have and Connie Britton is all over this while promoting Cast Change. Manicure and earrings are also fabulous.chloe-sevingyContinuing her patterned dresses with a late ’60s/early ’70s vibe and Chloë Sevigney adds a bit of sequin sparkle to the Beatriz At Dinner premiere and I love everything about this.morgan-saylorMorgan Saylor is flying into outer space in very cute Miu Miu at the Novitiate premiere and this is another case where I get to sing the praises of black tights. Although I do worry her arms are cold. I have a black pair of shoes very much like the burgundy ones Saylor is wearing and now I am coveting this color too. Bonus lipstick and manicure points.armie-hammerOne of the most talked about movies coming out of Sundance this year is Call Me By My Name and it is one love story that I cannot wait to see. Star Armie Hammer is all slinged up due to a torn pectoral muscle and he’s ticking all the sweater boxes in fuzzy stripes.naomie-harrisNow for something more formal in the black dress department with Naomie Harris at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards in Dior that looks super cozy (if not a little chilly in the arm department). Adding a splash of pink and gold makes this so much more than just a safe choice. And this is in part why Harris graces these pages so often; there’s always something that stands out.kelly-and-ewanFull ’90s nostalgia feelings right down to Ewan McGregor’s Adidas trainers and Kelly Macdonald’s silk dress at the Trainspotting T2 premire. Great lipstick choice from Macdonald too.

Best of the Pre-Emmys Parties – The Frocks

19 Sep

If the pre-Emmys parties are anything to go on then we are in for a treat tomorrow as there are plenty of fabulous outfits on display from #LadySuitWatch2015 to the patterned and super chic dresses below. There’s a strong element of fun at these parties as everyone is relaxed (or at least pretending to be) prior to the big show. This color, print and the caped sleeves makes Troian Bellisario an instant standout. Plus she’s pulling off what could be an awkward length. Plenty of fantastic cute above the knee frocks including Constance Zimmer’s long sleeve black and white floral delight. Currently suffering from UnREAL withdrawal.More florals and an 80s prom feel from Sarah Hyland in Oscar de la Renta. All this needs to complete this theme (or probably doesn’t) is a giant bow. Pockets! And a romantic take on this on trend from Grey’s Anatomy’s Camilla Luddington wearing an A.L.C. dress and Stuart Weitzman heels. Tina Majorino is still rocking one of my fave short hair styles (and I might be biased, but I love a short haircut) and she looks flawless in embellished metallics. A lace delight from Zoe Lister-Jones and a berry lip color I’m now adding to my Wish List (when I find out the shade/brand).   Zoe Kazan’s dress is a patchwork perfection and bf Paul Dano looks dashing in all the brown with a hint of blue. I got Olive Kitteridge on DVD (yes I still get those) for my birthday and I’m really looking forward to having my heart broken all over again. The amazing colourful prints continue with Yvette Nicole Brown in Eliza J. Color blocks for Erinn Hayes and this is giving me all the 70s really cool party vibes. Another ensemble that’s reading my favorite fashion decade (I’m so fine with the heavy 70s influence right now) and Maggie Gyllenhaal needs a cocktail to complete this look.  Getting a Cabaret feeling from Gwendoline Christie’s robe like dress and only Christie can wear something like this and induce all the gleeful clapping.A fun play on black fit and flare with Jane Krawkowski adding a touch of stripes to a classic style.
This is a really great silhouette on Christina Hendricks and another black dress triumph. I toyed with putting Danielle Brooks in the #LadySuitWatch2015 post as this Lafayette 148 New York dress is tuxedo inspired, but it doesn’t really matter whichever list Brooks goes on as she looks incredible either way.

New Girl 4.12 “Shark” Review: “I am Woman, the Smartest Species of them All”

7 Jan

The construction work that led to the loft getting a landline earlier this season on New Girl is back to stir up a debate between Schmidt and Jess with regards to getting things done; Schmidt thinks palms need to be greased whereas Jess is all for friendliness and by the book actions. Appearances are not all they seem as Nick and Coach discover when Winston graduates from the police academy and they fret for his safety when they see the small stature of his training officer, Aly. They can’t quite figure out how the guy who paints cat bowls for not only his cat but his roommates – where is Ferguson? – isn’t going to get stabbed by a kid on the job and their attempts to protect their friend are both dumb and very sweet.

New girl 4.12 SchmidtThe shark versus dolphin approach is reminiscent of the Jess/Nick debate from “Landlord” back in season 1 when Nick argued there is always an ulterior motive for generous acts (on this occasion he was proven right as their landlord thought they were going to have a threeway – this is still one of my favorite episodes). The winner of this debate between Schmidt and Jess is vague in that Jess is successful in getting the night construction switched to the daytime; however she has to use some nefarious tactics for this victory. No palms are greased, nor does she send an envelope filled with fake blood and a note saying “I know” instead she targets one of Schmidt’s weaknesses with his vanity.

Earlier in the episode Schmidt frets about his new tailor and how his cuff lengths on his jacket are not quite right, so when Cece mentions his cuffs seem a little off right before he is meant to argue in favor of nighttime construction it throws him off in the exact way Jess predicted. Jess feels a little dirty for resorting to this manipulative tactic (after some awkward straw mouth missing gloating) but really Schmidt had failed with his attempt to get Councilwoman Fawn Moscato (played brilliantly by Zoe Lister Jones with a character who wouldn’t be out of place in Pawnee) on side. Moscato is the kind of woman who can get Schmidt to do her bidding as she’s a little bit mean and has all the power (much like his relationship with his boss in season 2); she manages to appeal to everything he’s turned on by. Have you ever seen Schmidt look happier or more puppy like than when he stuck his head out of the window after he took hairspray to the face?

Schmidt is even impressed with how Jess effectively used his insecurity against him and it adds validity to his shark argument. The highlight of Jess agitating Schmidt comes much earlier in the episode as she keeps invoking the word “bro” and when everyone else follows suit it becomes even funnier as Schmidt gets more wound up.

Jess does attempt to go through all the correct channels, first by filling in endless forms while Ryan gets bonkers horny on red wine. Followed by performing a speech with visual aids – the visual aid is Ryan dressed as a construction worker and he continues to be impossibly handsome – that lays out the argument in a succinct manner. It’s very Jessica Day. A quick word on Ryan and I am so glad he has become more than just the standard 3 episode arc love interest as he doesn’t feel out of place in this group, plus the aforementioned handsome. He is still pretty perfect and this might be a problem in the future as currently the only conflict comes from the forbidden aspect of their relationship, but at the moment I am really enjoying what Julian Morris is bringing to the show. We do learn that Ryan’s uncle was arrested for having sex with a dolphin and Cece’s reaction to this random piece of Ryan information is pretty much perfect as she is “having a lot of difficulty nailing” him down.

This is a good guest star week and Nasim Pedrad slots in nicely to the New Girl world taking no shit from Nick and Coach as they air their concerns about Winston’s new career. I can understand why they might worry for their friend after watching Winston’s crazy antics for the last few years (although I really need to see Evil Winston – flashbacks please!), but dudes don’t judge how badass a woman is by her stature because she will kick your ass. As is the norm there are a lot of very funny Winston moments this week with his crossword idea being high up there for me; “Who likes cats? Winston across.” There is a whiff of Let’s Be Cops to this plot which was going to happen at some point with this storyline and if that movie had been Nick and Coach trail Winston I would have been much happier.

New Girl Style Watch

New Girl 4.12 JessThis outfit is a twofer as Jess is wearing a super cute Eva Franco summer dress paired with a black blazer from J. Crew which is giving me all the Liz Lemon feelings right now.
