Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Apr

As I mentioned last week award season is never truly over and this edition of “Out of the Box” backs up this theory with the Olivier Awards and events kicking off Emmy campaign season. The latter is what I am really excited about and even though the Emmys are months away the FYC screenings are starting now. And this means roundtable season is around the corner. We’ve also got magazine covers, editorials, IRL best friends and couples.

Oh and TV Ate My Wardrobe turned the grand old age of four this week! And I am so grateful to everyone for all your support over the years. There’s not so many posts on here now because I have been writing elsewhere, but this will always be the tiny corner I have carved out to talk costuming and red carpet style. So thank you to all the TV Ate My Wardrobe readers.

And while I’m talking work in other places here’s my first piece for Racked and it is a topic that is close to my heart; henley shirt wearing on The CW and the history of this garment.
Yara Shahidi continues her red carpet domination and at the Black-ish FYC screening she not only gave great ladysuit, but also fantastic collar detail in Marnie. Two of my favorite things. This is a cool af choice and a really fun spin on this trend. The sun was shining in London at the Olivier Awards and Chewing Gum’s – a show I still need to catch up on – Michaela Coel looked stunning in a floral print black halter neck. The best thing about this dress; her mother made it for her.Serving up great drama in this glorious weather is Amber Riley in Tony Ward and Riley has all the reasons to smile as she also won for her performance in Dreamgirls.

And you can see why she did from her performance of “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” at the Olivier Awards.

A really interesting Burberry frock for Cush Jumbo at the Olivier Awards and Jumbo has been a pattern queen on The Good Fight.

Cush Jumbo was also on The Late Show last month and somehow I only saw this delightful interview this week. Jumbo is bang on trend in gingham and after watching this I now want to see her perform Shakespeare with Stephen Colbert. While we’re discussing Stephen Colbert here’s this week’s Hollywood Reporter cover; my first thought is he’s gonna get street feet and also this is a fun shot. The Colbert resurgence is getting a lot of chat right now from wanting more to celebrating a return to form. I fall somewhere in the middle and I’m glad his monologues have become much more biting. However, Seth Meyers is still my first morning catch up of the daily late night shows with Colbert in second. The latter would not have been the case this time last year.

It is an interesting interview that discusses the state of things politically, David Letterman and pizza. It is this lovely story about his parents and New York that I wanted to highlight though:

“My mom and dad grew up here. My mom worked at Tiffany. This is in the 1940s; they were born in 1920. Mom would be 97 this year if she were still alive. To me this city is constantly running into locations where stories of their lives happened. Like, “Mom I’m outside the Chock full o’Nuts where you and Dad would meet after going to mass at St. Pat’s.” Or going into Tiffany and saying, “Can I go back into that back office there? My mom worked in there. I just want to stand there for a minute.” They’d see Lester Lanin or Benny Goodman at the Starlight Room of the [Waldorf] Astoria. And then they’d go to mass and then they’d go home on the 5 a.m. train.”This is a really great cover from Good Housekeeping and a good use of pink that isn’t sickly sweet. Tracee Ellis Ross is making lace and frills work; the Sandro top is a splurge item, but I love that the lipstick is the super affordable Rimmel.

In the piece Ross discusses everything from her mother to style and it is this bit on activism that stood out to me:

“I think that as a black woman, my beingness is a form of activism in and of itself. The fact that I am on a show called Black-ish, that I’m playing a woman who is both a wife and a doctor, a mother and a person, a partner and an individual, and that I am playing a joyful black woman on television who is not just surviving but thriving is by definition a form of activism. If I take that and ripple it out further in an amplified way, I can’t help, from my beingness, to not be a form of activism, because that is who I am.”

The show Borgen is an all time favorite of mine and I’m thrilled to see the three leads making strides especially on other TV shows now that it is over. Pilou Asbæk (or Danish Pacey as he is affectionately called in this neck of the woods) is now on Game of Thrones, which means much more exposure. In this Interview magazine chat he discusses his career from drama school to whether he will be returning to perform in his home country anytime soon. He also talks about his Borgen regrets:

“I signed on for two seasons and then they wanted to do a third one, and I thought it was a stupid idea because my character was already kind of developed—I’d finished him, I’d done him for two years, I didn’t want to do him anymore. So I said no to a third season so I could do theater, but I kind of regret it, because it was a great show. But the play was also good.”

Styling wise he’s working the pajama as an actual top look. The editorial also includes a trench coat and I really hope Asbæk gets to play a spy one day.

Stripes, best best friends and fun novelty specs from my faves.

From power besties to a power couple. Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Russell wearing pretty much my platonic ideal of a smart/casual outfit; tuxedo jacket, jeans and the all important striped tee.

They are ridiculously delightful and with a whole lot more laughter than your average episode of The Americans.

And don’t forget to check out my first piece for Racked.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

10 Aug

TV Instagram is busy again with a lot of shows back from hiatus and this week’s behind the scenes highlights include Jane the VirginYou’re the Worst and iZombie. Plus we have TCA style, Rachel Bloom’s male gaze take on casting notices and a Sex and the City project I do want to see.

Joining the ranks of those returning to work is the Jane the Virgin cast and there is a notable person sitting at that table.

More Jane the Virgin delights with almost hat twins Yael Grobglas and Gina Rodriguez. It looks like someone will be wearing a wig for at least the start of the season.

Goodbye hiatus beard. See you soon @cwjanethevirgin

While we’re on the subject of changing hair and it will come as no surprise that I love a good hiatus beards, but there is not much that can be done to hide this level of grizzle. For Justin Baldoni the beard now only exists in the form of old photos and future hiatus dreams.

After posting a photo of the super depressing casting notices from Backstage, Rachel Bloom wrote some very similar sounding descriptions for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend characters but with a male gaze. “Singing a plus.”

The DC TV universe keeps on getting bigger.

The big Brooklyn Nine-Nine news is they’re doing a crossover with New Girl (and I’m very into this idea). It is nice to see these smiling faces again.

The You’re the Worst season 3 countdown continues and these details from their TCA panel have got me even more excited.

You’re the Worst group shot with a hint of fancy costuming; big party episode alert?

Continuing their behind the brains hot streak; here is iZombie’s Robert Buckley doing Rose McIver a solid by looking after her hair clips.

They also have some pretty amazing location views when they get out of the morgue.

Best hug sandwich. No need for hot sauce.

It was announced at TCA that Transparent season 3 will return Friday, September 23 and I’m looking forward to seeing this family again.

From one stylish TV family to an even more stylish TV family and the cast of Black-ish at TCA.

I would like to watch SATC with Phoebe Robinson. All of these points are very valid.

Danielle Brooks posts some of my favorite style shots. This is another one.

I stopped watching The Mindy Project last season (the Danny stuff just got too urgh), but I am glad I get to enjoy the incredible costuming via Mindy’s Insta.

Carly Chaikin showing why Darlene was meant to be with my fave heart-shaped specs.

Mad Men Reunion and More at the 16th Annual AFI Awards

9 Jan

It’s only the first week of January and already it feels like we are in the full thick of it when it comes to award season. Tomorrow is the Golden Globes which means plenty of pre-parties tonight, but first there is the AFI Awards luncheon showcasing the best of the year in television and film with 10 titles from each getting honored. These include Mad MenBlack-ishMr RobotUnREAL and Master of None on the TV side and Room, The Big ShortCarol and Spotlight on the film end. For the full list of honorees head here.

As it is a daytime event the looks are slightly more casual and while I love a fancy gown and dudes in tuxedos (and see also ladysuits), these are actually my ideal kind of outfits. Pattern dominates once again much to my delight and the guys are really bringing it with an array of suit/jacket choices; variety is not something you will be seeing a lot of in the dude department tomorrow night (well at least we have Alan Cumming to count on).

Kiernan Shipka, January Jones and Jon HammOne to feature in the Kodak Carousel collection and I’m getting all emotional just thinking about how Mad Men left these three characters. Jon Hamm’s blue plaid is an excellent choice for this cocktail reception in what will be a sea of black this weekend. Kiernan Shipka and January Jones have coordinated, but not in a way that looks too matchy matchy; Shipka’s collar detail and Jones’ red lipstick are both fantastic. This picture is everything.

Brie Larson and Jacob TemblayBrie Larson continuing her week of sartorial highs in this super pretty Gucci floral dress with a twist; pink snakes weaving through the foliage. Another collar to love and she looks entirely at home with one of the best dressed guys of award season. Yes I know Jacob Tremblay is only nine, but he is showing how it’s done from formal wear to tweed sports coats.

Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday and Carly ChaikinMore floral dress treats from the Mr Robot ladies with Portia Doubleday and Carly Chaikin also getting the excellent collar memo. Christian Slater isn’t looking too shabby either.

Yara Shahidi, Miles Brown, Marcus Sribner, Marsai MartinThe kids from Black-ish are also rocking various prints including Marsai Martin’s polka dot delight, plus more plaid from Miles Brown. Teens Yara Shahidi and Marcus Scribner don’t let the side down and all age groups are covered in the high style stakes.

Tracee Ellis RossTheir onscreen mom Tracee Ellis Ross is also killing it in with a) more standout prints, b) another fabulous collar and c) red lip color bliss.

Constance Zimmer and Sarah Gertrude ShapiroI have a feeling the UnREAL table is a whole lot of fun and I’m very much feeling co-creator Sarah Gertrude Shapiro’s all-black ensemble with the dash of gold jewelry especially when paired with Constance Zimmer super sweet pink look. The shoulders on Zimmer’s dress are giving off Star Trek costume vibes and I am here for it.

Aziz AnsariAziz Ansari is a guy we can count on to turn out look super sharp and this is no exception.

Ryan GoslingSimple and effective from Ryan Gosling in a great brown suit with a super relaxed stance on the open collar.

Rami MalekRami Malek is also going for the no tie option (which is more than fine for a daytime event like this), but the button done up thing is definitely better for his whole aesthetic.

Working mirrored sunglasses in a way I could only dream of is Taraji P. Henson.

And what it might look like if Empire was on cable.

When branded freebies from your own show come in very useful. Yes I would very much like my own trash juice receptacle.

Black-ish is on my never ending catch up list and this clip alone is enough to bump it up the list into a prime spot.

My resting face

A much needed dose of Broad City and the best kind of resting face.

In this week’s Orange is the New Black installment something is going down in the kitchen.

Mindy Kaling’s Saturday night premiere editing shows off more Bedhead pajama treats on a variety of screens.

Playing House is pure lady friendship happiness and Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham blew the first whistle at the Los Angeles Derby Dolls bout last weekend. Here they are clutching their whistles and Parham’s Johnny Depp tee (from Clashist) is a good reminder of his pre-Pirates persona.

Eye makeup goals from Tina Turnbow with The Affair’s Julia Goldani Telles showing off ultimate wings.

Best birthday present food truck. Don’t spill any sauce down your costume (because that is definitely something I would do).

A new hair color and a stunning blue Monique Lhuillier gown for Elisabeth Moss. Excelled lipstick too.

Emmy Roundtable Season is Here!

28 May

You know the drill by now and while I can pretend I haven’t been checking various industry websites daily (okay sometimes way more than that) for their Emmy discussion coverage, anyone who visits TV Ate My Wardrobe at this time of year will be aware of my love of all things roundtable. The Hollywood Reporter kicked things off a couple of weeks ago with an interesting chat with writers from shows such as EmpireThe Good Wife and The Leftovers and now we turn to the comedy actresses.

The Hollywood Reporter has gathered a roll call of ladies I would like to get a boozy dinner with and covers network, cable, basic cable and streaming platforms; Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Ellie Kemper (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Lena Dunham (Girls), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish) and Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer) discuss a range of subjects touching on racism, sexism and issues they have encountered in the work place. Sounds like a hoot, right? Oh, but it is.

THR Comedy coverThere’s a lot of jaw dropping revelations which sadly fall in line with some of the other industry stories making the rounds (such as Maggie Gyllenhaal is ‘too old’ and Salma Hayek has an accent). You can read the transcript over at the THR website, which is great and all, but the videos are where the real good stuff is at. In the past the full discussion has been released at the same time as the issue of the magazine, however this year we will have to wait until August when it will be available on THR.com and SundanceTV. For now we will have to make do with the clips they have made available on YouTube, which thanks to some editing makes it seem like the same question gets asked three times. Regardless of this choppy nature there is still plenty to unpack.

First up Amy Schumer discussing the incredible 12 Angry Men episode of Inside Amy Schumer and the inspiration behind it (so much rage/eye rolls at those dudes).

Good audition stories ahoy and by good I mean ‘Holy fuck! Hollywood is a garbage dump at times’ with Tracee Ellis Ross sharing a humiliating experience as well as talking about sexism and racism behind the camera.

Gina Rodriguez shares a similar WTF audition moment and I heart these women and their reactions to the crap they have to endure so hard.

On race and learning experiences Lena Dunham discusses the reaction to season 1 of Girls. Plus she also talks sexism and how her book advance was scrutinized. Plus I really want to know who the Girls guest star who spouted that awful shit is.

For a couple more videos from this roundtable head here and roll on August so we can watch the full thing (this will be my sentiment for all of these posts).

Comedy roundtableStyling wise they have stuck with the bold color palette and this tends to be the signature look for the comedy actress editorial, while the drama actresses usually get something a little more somber or on the more delicate end; see last year’s pastel, satin and lace for more (cue this year’s drama ladies in so much sparkle just to prove this theory wrong).

Check back for more Emmy related discussions in the weeks/months to come.
