R U WATCHING!!?? #UnbreakableKimmySchmidt #netflix ūüėĽ

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt¬†is back and unlike¬†Daredevil¬†S2 I haven’t stalled at the halfway mark (I’ll get back to¬†Daredevil, but there are just so many other shows taking priority right now).¬†Kimmy¬†starts off on the patchy side as one early plot doesn’t quite stick the landing, but the jokes are stacked and so wonderfully random at times. I am still thinking about the Rob Kardashian sock designer reference. Kimmy’s style has given me lots of inspiration for spring and Anna Camp is an A+ guest star choice.

And while we’re on the subject of amazing¬†Kimmy Schmidt¬†guest stars; I yelled WHAT?! so loud at my screen that I had to rewind the scene. Everything about this moment from the deconstruction of¬†Dawson’s Creek¬†to that haircut and costume is perfect.

Season 5 of¬†Girls¬†has been a triumph from Marnie’s wedding to Marnie’s one night adventure all the way to the two-part finale which got me misty eyed on several occasions. One surprise this season was how much they leaned into the Jessa/Adam pairing much to my delight and here Adam Driver definitely has his fighting face at the ready.

The beginning of the end

A post shared by @ jennikonner on

Where one thing ends, another begins and while this week marked the end of season 5 for us as the audience, the Girls team started production on season 6 with their first table read.

Game of Thrones¬†returns this week and it is a testament to the HBO promo department that even after last year’s mostly disappointing season I am so hyped for Sunday. Michiel Huisman posting this very vacation looking snap also helps.

From the adorable on the Jane the Virgin set.

To the very surreal and slightly creepy (depending on how you feel about clowns).

While we’re on the subject of creepy here are some of the alternate masks for new clone M.K. on¬†Orphan Black¬†and the new season kicked off on a high. I also wrote an essay about¬†Orphan Black,¬†The Americans¬†and identity; I would love you to read it.

There has been a lot of Coachella on Instagram this week and Amandla Stenberg is avoiding all the fashion cliches of this festival looking cool as fuck in this very 90s look. Not a choker or flower crown in sight. And this could easily be a new print ad for Calvin Klein; it is that good.

Aya Cash and Kether Donohue’s version of Coachella is much more my speed.

Looking like the back of a gown on Say Yes to the Dress with Aaron Tveit on a photo shoot.

Alison Wright got to wear a wig on TV this week; nope Martha hasn’t gone undercover and instead this is for the HBO movie¬†Confirmation.¬†Here is Wright with co-star Wendell Pierce.

Another costume stunner from Salvador Perez on The Mindy Project.

This is all very exciting and I am so ready for season 2 of UnREAL.

Busy Philipps giving me so many Freaks and Geeks related feelings. The instant I see that blue coat it makes me so very happy. The caption here is also excellent.

While I’m dealing with feelings, here seems like a good place to end this week.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Apr

Spring is here and the red carpet is awash with florals and bold patterns at the premieres for¬†The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt¬†and¬†Confirmation. Don’t ditch the coats just yet though as the weather has a habit of turning in an instant and there is also fabulous outerwear among the pretty dresses this week. Plus more magazine cover sensations, talk show entrance attire and the FX Upfronts.Ellie KemperKimmy Schmidt has one of television’s brightest wardrobes and star Ellie Kemper doesn’t disappoint in a very cute Tanya Taylor floral mini-dress, which works wonders against the pink backdrop and purple carpet.Tituss BurgessSpeaking of bold turns and Tituss Burgess lights up the purple carpet in a look that makes me want to crack open a bottle of Pinot by Tituss to celebrate.¬†Kimmy Schmidt¬†returns in 2 weeks (April 15) for season 2. Now to see if I can finish¬†Daredevil¬†before then.Kerry WashingtonAnother floral sensation with Kerry Washington in romantic Dolce & Gabbana at the¬†Confirmation¬†premiere (airing Saturday, April 16). My only quibble is it could do with being slightly shorter as it is a tad overwhelming, but on the whole this is a style which we have seen Washington nail on multiple occasions; embracing print sets her apart from the character we see on a weekly basis.Regina KingHypnotic black and white flower power from Regina King and the only thing this really needs is perhaps a bolder lip color, but that tends to be my answer to enhance any outfit.ZendayaHow to take a feature from a paint program and turn it into an excellent outfit; Zendaya’s color palette mosaic bodice and matching skirt lining is a welcome addition to this week’s bold looks and the¬†Confirmation¬†red carpet¬†delivers on an array of striking ensembles.Sarah PaulsonDouble Sarah Paulson this week and first up wearing Philosophy at the FX Upfront¬†The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story¬†screening. Her hair looks really great here (Marcia Clark hair essay plug!) and upfronts fall into the TCA/PaleyFest dress code where there isn’t really one, but you don’t want to go too fancy or shabby. Paulson straddles this middle ground here. The blue heart pendant is a nice touch with this plunging neckline; a subtle nod to her favorite emoji?Holly TaylorBorrowing a coat from her onscreen mom’s wardrobe is Holly Taylor also at the FX Upfront screening and this Coach tan trench is going to be making an appearance this season on¬†The Americans¬†(we have already seen the black version). Adding a touch of sophistication over her black crop top and jeans casual cool ensemble.¬†Tatiana Maslany ColbertTatiana Maslany is a woman after my own heart and as she makes her way into¬†The Late Show with Stephen Colbert¬†heels in hand and yellow sneakers on her feet.¬†Sarah Paulson ColbertSarah Paulson Part II – also appearing on¬†The Late Show with Stephen Colbert¬†and while I’m not totally on board with whatever is going on at the bottom of this dress, the plaid coat with leather lapels is more than making up it.¬†Kirsten DunstGet on my coffee table The Gentlewoman, because woah is this cover shot and yellow/black and white pairing so goddamn good.

NYFW Fantasy Costuming: Styling Comedies with Kate Spade New York

12 Sep

Fall TV is so close and New York Fashion Week is already looking ahead to Spring 2016 and so the time has come for some more Fantasy Costuming. Starting with a very colorful and playful collection from Kate Spade New York which is ideal for comedy shows such as the¬†The Mindy Project, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,¬†New Girl,¬†Jane the Virgin¬†and even¬†You’re the Worst¬†(there are leather jackets and super cool sunglasses). Comedy utilizes bold costuming with a strong color palette and plenty of patterns because I guess it might be considered inappropriate to wear outfits like these in court or while trying to solve crime or something. Kate Spade New York definitely does the bright thing and then some giving us something to smile about.

The novelty bag trend for Kate Spade continues with a whole array of animals and objects with the Admit One clutch going to the top of the covet list. If you’re after something a bit more traditional then there are plenty of non-novelty purses with some incorporating the signature daisy motif from this collection.

Here are some of the standout looks that would look ideal in some current and sadly gone too soon sitcoms.

Kate Spade car bagSparkles for Mindy on The Mindy Project and perfect for festive party season.

Kate Spade trench part twoAnd a workplace look for Mindy. Maybe not quite enough pattern clashing here.

Kate Spade flowerNew Girl¬†won’t be back until mid-season, but this is perfectly Jess.

Kate Spade Pushing DaisiesAnd Jess is a character that probably would own a dog shaped purse and this gorgeous super girly floral full skirt.

Kate Spade playsuitSticking with New Girl and Cece is definitely a fan of the patterned jumpsuit.

Kate Spade rainbowOne character who really embraces every candy color possible is Kimmy Schmidt and a lot of this collection would fit in her wardrobe (if this character suddenly got a pay rise). Or a cute outfit for¬†Jane the Virgin’s¬†Petra as she does love a cute short short.

Kate Spade admit oneThe bag I am a little obsessed with and a dress for Jane on Jane the Virgin for post-maternity wear.

Kate Spade daisy shortsThis has Eliza from¬†Selfie¬†written all over it and now I am super sad about the lack of Henry/Eliza resolution. Yes I’m going to go listen to “Chandelier” again. It would also be perfect for Petra and her¬†stems.

Kate Spade CapeI would love to see Petra pull a dramatic turn and wear a cape. Or I would like to see this cape in my closet.

Kate Spade stripe skirt

This skirt is maybe slightly longer than Gretchen’s usual style on¬†You’re the Worst,¬†but if we borrow one of the leather jackets from the galley below then it is certainly edgy enough for her work place attire.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

31 Jul

Summer TCA is here and this means whole host of panel attire – think smart/casual or what you might wear for a nice lunch date – and animated sitting down shots. Plus a red carpet outfit that has me all excited for an event I am going to at the weekend.

Uzo Aduba and Taylor SchillingDay 1 was all Netflix including some of the¬†Orange is the New Black¬†ladies and it is Uzo Aduba’s colorful L.K. Bennett print frock which is the panel standout. Taylor Schilling’s brown pants and tri-color blue top is actually a 3.1 Phillip Lim jumpsuit (sitting down makes it hard to tell) and it is relaxed cool. Nicholas Kirkwood T-bar pumps add a touch of glam to her look.

Natasha Lyonne and Selenis LeyvaI miss you Nicky! Natasha Lyonne and Selenis Leyva are all about the LBD and fantastic shoes.

OITNB TCAAnd here is a wide shot of the cast in attendance showing the range of style choices and my other favorite pairing with Lea DeLaria and Taryn Manning sitting on the far right.

Kimmy Schmidt TCAThe costuming on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt¬†is a color wheel explosion and¬†Titus Burgess is bringing it in a pink shirt and bow tie. He is indeed flawless. Teal is a great choice for Ellie Kemper and Tina Fey’s pants and sleeveless blouse are perfect TCA threads. Would also look really great at the office.

The Leftovers TCASeason 1 of The Leftovers¬†is messy in places, but the stuff that is really great is really great and this is why I am so excited for October 4 when the show returns. At the TCA panel returning cast members Justin Theroux and the devastatingly good Carrie Coon were joined by new regular Regina King (I am still sad about¬†Southland’s¬†cancellation) and both ladies look delightful in such bold colors. Theroux scrubs up rather nicely too in a stripe short sleeve Henley.

Carrie CoonAnd a closer look at the texture of Carrie Coon’s dress. Now this is the kind of sheer elements I like and one occasion where nude sandals are the best choice.

Rebecca FergusonComplicated feelings about jumpsuits aside as this navy wrap Diane von Furstenberg ensemble worn by Rebecca Ferguson at the Mission: Impossible РRogue Nation London premiere is spectacular. As is her performance in the film which I saw yesterday; it is so good to see a woman kicking this much ass and not being the damsel in distress. She gave me all the Sydney Bristow feels. Such a good twist on menswear tailoring (and you know how much I love a lady suit).

Now here comes the personal bit and DVF garments have often graced these pages with the wrap dress being an item I have desired for a long time. I am attending my soon to be brother-in-law’s wedding tomorrow and for the occasion I will be wearing Diane von Furstenberg. There will be a much longer piece to follow because this is probably the most TV Ate My Wardrobe story there is; as you can gather I am very excited about this.

Emmy Roundtable Season is Here!

28 May

You know the drill by now and while I can pretend I haven’t been checking various industry websites daily (okay sometimes way more than that) for their Emmy discussion coverage, anyone who visits TV Ate My Wardrobe at this time of year will be aware of my love of all things roundtable.¬†The Hollywood Reporter¬†kicked things off a couple of weeks ago with an interesting chat with writers from shows¬†such as¬†Empire,¬†The Good Wife¬†and The Leftovers¬†and now we turn to the comedy actresses.

The Hollywood Reporter has gathered a roll call of ladies I would like to get a boozy dinner with and covers network, cable, basic cable and streaming platforms; Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Ellie Kemper (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Lena Dunham (Girls), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish) and Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer) discuss a range of subjects touching on racism, sexism and issues they have encountered in the work place. Sounds like a hoot, right? Oh, but it is.

THR Comedy coverThere’s a lot of jaw dropping revelations which sadly fall in line with some of the other industry stories making the rounds (such as Maggie Gyllenhaal is ‘too old’ and Salma Hayek has an accent). You can read the transcript over at the THR website, which is great and all, but the videos are where the real good stuff is at. In the past the full discussion has been released at the same time as the issue of the magazine, however this year we will have to wait until August when it will be available on THR.com and SundanceTV. For now we will have to make do with the clips they have made available on YouTube, which thanks to some editing makes it seem like the same question gets asked three times. Regardless of this choppy nature there is still plenty to unpack.

First up Amy Schumer discussing the incredible 12 Angry Men episode of Inside Amy Schumer and the inspiration behind it (so much rage/eye rolls at those dudes).

Good audition stories ahoy and by good I mean ‘Holy fuck! Hollywood is a garbage dump at times’ with Tracee Ellis Ross sharing a humiliating experience as well as talking about sexism and racism behind the camera.

Gina Rodriguez shares a similar WTF audition moment and I heart these women and their reactions to the crap they have to endure so hard.

On race and learning experiences Lena Dunham discusses the reaction to season 1 of Girls. Plus she also talks sexism and how her book advance was scrutinized. Plus I really want to know who the Girls guest star who spouted that awful shit is.

For a couple more videos from this roundtable head here and roll on August so we can watch the full thing (this will be my sentiment for all of these posts).

Comedy roundtableStyling wise they have stuck with the bold color palette and this tends to be the signature look for the comedy actress editorial, while the drama actresses usually get something a little more somber or on the more delicate end; see last year’s pastel, satin and lace for more (cue this year’s drama ladies in so much sparkle just to prove this theory wrong).

Check back for more Emmy related discussions in the weeks/months to come.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Jan

It is the first new “Out of the Box” of 2015 and after two weeks of near winter hibernation everyone is coming out to play for premieres, magazine covers, award shows and the TCA winter press tour.

Broad City S2 premiere Amy RyanBroad City¬†returns in less than a week (Wednesday 14!) and after attending the¬†Girls¬†premiere¬†a couple of days ago, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer took center stage at the Broad City¬†premiere party. If I was ever to attempt a form of crop top then Abbi’s outfit is my platonic ideal of this with the sliveriest of stomach skin on show. Amy Ryan is one of many guest stars we can expect to see in season 3 and this is one super happy photo of awesome people.

Broad City premiereSpeaking of awesome people and because I couldn’t chose between these two photos from the premiere here are Abbi and Ilana (her white jacket is aces) doing the group party pose with SNL’s¬†Kate McKinnon and the always amazing Carrie Brownstein (also wearing a coat to be coveted). Drawing hearts around this.

Viola DavisAt the People’s Choice Awards (which I know no one really cares about but hey there were a handful of great outfits) Viola Davis looks stunning in an Escada¬†column of hot-pink. Plus when she won there was a good amount of shade throwing at the awful¬†New York Times¬†piece that was somehow intended as a compliment towards Davis. In her speech Davis said “Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty.”

Melissa McCarthyEverything about Melissa McCarthy’s outfit is a win and the leather piping gives a chic and stylish edge stopping it from being just another all black ensemble. Bonus red lipstick points.

Allison JanneyAllison Janney co-hosted these awards so there were a variety of outfits and it is this sparkly Rani Zakhem number from the red carpet is the standout. Smoking hot.

Kit HaringtonIt is going to be a weekend of a lot of dudes in suits and Kit Harington shows how it is done (even with a simple suit the tailoring can be off) at the premiere of Testament of Youth. Skinny tie perfection.

Tina Fey and Ellie KemperSwitching things up and TCA winter press tour delivered on the floral attire from Tina Fey and Ellie Kemper as they discuss their new Netflix (and previously NBC) project¬†The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. All 13-episodes will debut March 6 and I am already obsessing over Kimmy’s super colorful wardrobe from the promo pictures.

Lena Dunham ElleLena Dunham covers the Women in TV issue of¬†Elle¬†and while it doesn’t quite hit the polka dot highs of her¬†Vogue¬†cover from this time last year, the cover shot is still a striking. Bed hair win.

Allison WilliamsAnother Girls star magazine cover and the styling of this Glamour shot is still very Allison Williams without going down the preppy or princess route. The Bottega Veneta dress and relaxed sitting/slightly hunched posing is really working for me.
