Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2016 Part 1

21 Dec

Taking a TV costuming break for this installment of our Best of 2016 series for a midweek “Out of the Box” special focusing on the best magazine covers of the year.

Each of the covers below has appeared on “Out of the Box” and while publications like Teen VogueBust and Variety have featured on multiple occasions we have picked only one cover per magazine. The twelve chosen don’t quite work on a one per actual month, but it is a good snapshot of what was on offer throughout 2016 and this is the order they were published in.

In fact three of them were from the same “Out of the Box” column in October; this was a very good week for magazines and made the disappointing September issues a distant memory.

A study by Fashionista shows that diversity of cover stars is much improved in 2016 and this is evident from the entries below, although there is always room for improvement especially from certain publications who still lean heavily towards a certain look (oh hey Harper’s Bazaar).

Composition and color that standout were important in how each one was picked and styling was also an influence; I would be more than happy to have any of these issues on my coffee table (and quite a few of them have).Amandla Stenberg Teen VogueTeen Vogue has had a very influential year and they kickstarted 2016 with this stunning Amandla Stenberg cover; this one appeared on the first “Out of the Box” of the year and the direct look to camera is full of self-assured confidence.

Almost 12 months later and I am still mesmerized.bust-jessica-williamsBetween the bold lip color, the super expressive smile, the backdrop and the lip hair clip this Bust cover featuring Jessica Williams is enough to make anyone feel happy.Kirsten DunstPairing a bright yellow with black and white is instant cover catnip and Kirsten Dunst is giving me a look as if to say she knows this. I’m not normally a fan of the wet look hair trend, but here it works with the casual denim jacket number.

My one magazine purchasing regret this year is I didn’t find an outlet that sold this issue of The Gentlewoman.oscar-isaacWhen this cover of Rolling Stone was unleashed on to Twitter it very much distracted from the work I was in the middle of because, well you can see.

Oscar Isaac hugging a dog in his coat is very much in my wheelhouse.A #LadySuitWatch2016 entry and Elle is very good (with certain beauty shot caveats) at these multi-cover celebrations; this one looking to women in comedy with the Ghostbusters cast getting their own covers.Nylon WinonaThis has been the year of the Winona Ryder comeback with several publications featuring Ryder front and center. Nylon goes old school with a ‘zine like shot and Winona Forever indeed (she definitely has a portrait in her attic). Gina Rodriguez Latina magThe haircut of the year is showcased on Latina Magazine with Gina Rodriguez’s Annihilation half buzz cut; this is another case of staring directly at the reader, which is both disarming and enticing. The accompanying editorial is just as stunning. Thankful for wigs on Jane the Virgin so she could do this during its hiatus.variety-laverne-coxA super ethereal image of Laverne Cox for Variety and this is how to do striking pastels beyond the Hollywood Reporter’s stagnant drama actress roundtable sartorial choices (see also the seriousness of putting everyone in black/white or blush tones). So dreamy.

michelle-obamaIt is no surprise that Michelle Obama has appeared on a vast array of magazines this year and The New York Times gives the most original with an incredible beauty shot rather than sharing the focus with a fabulous outfit at the same time. emma-stoneNovember issues were so full of hope and this Emma Stone Vogue entry is bittersweet now. I still love it though and the whole composition coupled with the pixie cut, stripes and color palette is so good that the crop top is something I can get on board with.thr-ruth-neggaRuth Negga has had a very good 2016 and the “Out of the Box” column this Hollywood Reporter cover was part of also featured Negga’s Vogue editorial and she is also the first face of Vogue’s 2017 issues.

This is a great shot with Negga commanding the focus and the Saint Laurent floral pussy bow dress is something I covet in both this and blouse form (as seen on Keri Russell).

michelle-williamsEnding the year with something sparkly and my forever fave Michelle Williams wearing Michael Kors for Porter. The photo shoot inside is just as fabulous and something in the interview caused me to go full klaxon on Twitter. Someone make this happen.

Stay tuned for more “Out of the Box” 2016 highlights next week and for the regular column on Friday.

Best of the Hollywood Reporter “Women in Entertainment” Celebration

8 Dec

The Hollywood Reporter celebrated their annual “Women in Entertainment” issue with a breakfast event and this means a whole range of daytime styles from ladysuits to patterned dress delights. This year Tina Fey, Ryan Murphy and Megyn Kelly were all honored with Jon Hamm delivering on the funny in his opening speech for Fey.

You can watch the entire thing and it is well worth it.

Plus here are the best looks from the event and there is so much pattern pretty.

simone-bilesKicking off with a ladysuit in a fantastic color and multi-Olympic gold winning medalist Simone Biles crushes it in Marienbad.the-farmigasMore ladysuit goodness from Vera Farmiga and polka dot pussy bow is probably my favorite kind of pussy bow blouse. Joined by younger sister Tassia (for Ryan Murphy celebrating reasons) and she also looks fantastic in one of the many patterned numbers I am now coveting hard.michelle-monaghanGetting all the amazing collar points is Michelle Monaghan in this superb Michael Kors Spring 17 ensemble. Daytime event perfection.eva-longoriaMore florals and another winner with Eva Longoria wearing a dress from her own Limited collection; it is totally affordable and very cute. Plus bonus pockets!niecy-nashFrom roses to leopard print and Niecy Nash is full super sexy whoa in this all powerful Meow and Barks Boutique dress.maria-menounosDipping into that seventies inspiration is Maria Menounos in a fabulous Valentino mini frock. issa-raeWhile I’m not crazy for shoulder cutouts, I do love the print and color of this Ellery dress on Issa Rae.emma-stoneAnd while I’m going crazy for yellow dresses (as I tend to) Emma Stone is smart to remind people of the great La La Land poster during award season and she does so in Giambattista Valli style.constance-zimmerConstance Zimmer mixes casual with glam in a Pat Benatar tee from Janey Lopaty Vintage and super sparkly Milly skirt.aja-naomi-kingIt is not all print and ladysuits; Aja Naomi King looks bold in blue and this Alice + Olivia dress is a great breakfast choice. I’d like to see some hot pink pumps, but I can deal with this neutral tone for an event this early in the day.genevieve-angelsonNow it might look like Genevieve Angelson put on this Chloe ensemble back to front, but I love it so much and she is definitely pulling it off. Plus I really hope another network/streaming platform saves Good Girls Revolt because the story on that show is far from over.tina-feyTo the woman of the hour and really if you haven’t watched the video at the start of this piece then I will urge you to scroll up and do so. Also she looks great in patterned Dolce & Gabbana with a very day appropriate blazer thrown over for good measure.tina-and-jonAnd I’ve got to end on this one for reasons. Oh to have Jon Hamm look at you like that.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

25 Nov

This has been a much quieter week on the style front than the last bumper “Out of the Box” and this makes sense as yesterday was Thanksgiving; if you were celebrating then I hope you had a fabulous one! Also, Happy Gilmore Girls Day! This is pretty much what I plan on doing today. In all things Gilmore and style here is my rundown of the best of the premiere red carpet and I also took a look at the fashion of the early ’00s through the 2016 lens.

On the menu this week we have very cute premiere dresses and a whole eclectic mix of events. Plus roundtable season is back! lizzy-caplanAt the London premiere of Allied, Lizzy Caplan wears an Elie Saab that is not only the ideal amount of sheer but also gives off great polka dot and red lipstick. Pretty much perfect.yara-shahidiYara Shahidi has become a bit of anOut of the Boxfixture and part of this is down to her versatile style; at the Marie Claire Young Women’s Honors she goes for fresh and funky in Tadashi Shoji giving off some fun floral vibes with a spirally twist.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNCYMrzDDoM/?taken-by=yarashahidi&hl=en

Plus a bonus fantastic selfie from the night with a super sleek bobbed Gina Rodriguez.

jenny-slate-and-edgar-rThe first major awards nominations came out this week and the Independent Spirit Awards is always a favorite. They tend to skew different to all the other major awards on account of the whole indie aspect (of course there is overlap) and they always deliver on the red carpet style front. Jenny Slate and Edgar Ramirez were on hand to announce the nominations and are giving good presenter style; not too fancy, not too casual. Also bold pink shoes are always welcome.

For the full list of nominations (and pretty much a list of films I want to see) head here.ellen-and-obamaThis week President Obama presented 21 Americans with the Presidential Medal of Freedom; one of the recipients was Ellen DeGeneres and it is hard to watch this clip without getting chocked up and teary as both Ellen and Barack Obama did. And it really is “easy to forget now just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages 20 years ago.”

This photo of the pair is a delight and Ellen as always is crushing the ladysuit game and gives such good pattern clashing.

Here is a full look at this fabulous burgundy plaid suit as Ellen waits to get in to the White House.

thrRoundtable season is here! And we all know how I feel about this (if you don’t then know I went full klaxon on Twitter when THR released who the group was). Amy Adams pretty much has a reserved seat at this table as this is now her fifth roundtable over the last seven years showing just how strong her presence is at every award season. I adore her so I am all good with this. Somehow she also gets the worst outfit. And in fun THR roundtable stats; three of these women (Adams, Bening and Portman) all featured on the inaugural cover back in 2010.

Taraji P. Henson gives great roundtable as last year’s TV drama actress discussion showed and as I mentioned last week I am very excited about Hidden Figures.

They’ve gone for the dark ensembles to give off the serious vibe, which is one of the go to THR roundtable editorial staples with Emma Stone and Naomie Harris taking best dressed and Annette Bening getting best lipstick. As with the TV roundtable series the movie ones will air on SundanceTV, but you can read the transcript and watch the videos at The Hollywood Reporter

Now I’m going to get back to Gilmore Girls and have a fantastic rest of your weekend!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

21 Oct

September might be the month where everything happens, but October is also delivering on the style front. From fancy events to magazine covers and promoting movies I want to see; this week’s “Out of the Box” is a whole lot of fun with a dash of photos that make me speechless.cynthia-erivoAt the God’s Love We Deliver Golden Hearts Awards (click here for more on this charity) there was a whole lot of Michael Kors on display (the charity is based in his SoHo building) and standout is Cynthia Erivo in a fantastic patterned number. Great lipstick and shoe choice for this look.cush-jumboCush Jumbo is a longtime Michael Kors aficionado and this is another hit striking a cute/sophisticated balance. I am also very excited for The Good Wife spinoff for costume and all the Diane/Lucca reasons. Plus Sarah Steele is coming back! sutton-fosterIt is hard to look at Sutton Foster’s ensemble at not sing “Gold” by Spandau Ballet and this is shiny delight. gugu-mbatha-rawOne final dress highlight from this year’s London Film Festival and Gugu Mbatha-Raw serves up major in the rain drama with her big umbrella, a beautiful plunging Burberry gown and a fantastic berry lip color.anna-campGood Girls Revolt lands on Amazon next Friday and like I don’t have enough shows to catch up on still (seriously, don’t go away at the end of September). For costuming, story and cast reasons I am looking forward to this and Anna Camp looks great in this very Giambattista Valli cute dress at the premiere. Excellent detail to warm my collar loving heart.jake-and-jonAt a Hillary Clinton fundraiser event in New York a whole lot of handsome took to the stage and when can we get a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jon Hamm? Now would be great. Please and thank you. Preferably a comedy, but that is not a dealbreaker.michelle-obamaThe first of three magazine covers that delivered on every level this week and this T Magazine dedication to Michelle Obama was pretty much 50% of what was on my Instagram feed on Monday. Every single time it popped up it still had the same impact and that is one of pure wonder. Such great simple and effective styling; those triangle earrings are making me wish I had pierced ears.

Michelle Obama also killed it at her final state dinner and I am so sad this is almost over.emma-stoneWhen this cover of Vogue first popped up on my Twitter TL on Friday afternoon my jaw hit the floor; this is the best cover Vogue has done in a long, long time (Teen Vogue you are still crushing it on the cover front). It manages to be a different approach for Emma Stone – love the pixie – while still managing to actually look like her. I am a sucker for all things stripes and I love this cover so much that I’m even fine with the whole cropped element. ruth-neggaThe November Vogue is also crushing it inside the magazine with a series of stunning photos of Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton promoting their new movie Loving. Negga’s direct stare is disarming in the best possible way and the styling of this shoot is excellent.
thr-ruth-neggaAlso giving great face and style as part of The Hollywood Reporter cover story this week. And if this dress looks familiar it is because the pussy bow version was worn by Keri Russell on The Today Show a few months ago.

The 2016 Comedy Actress Emmy Roundtable

15 Jun

Emmy roundtable season continues and The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled the comedy actress panel featuring an amazing lineup of Lily Tomlin, Gina Rodriguez, Ilana Glazer, Niecy Nash, Allison Janney and Rachel Bloom.

Emmy voting is now open and you can see the full list of submissions here; once again Allison Janney has a chance of picking up two awards in comedy (Mom) and drama (Masters of Sex). I’m going to be taking a closer look at the costume design submissions in the not too distant future as a specific episode is listed for each one so keep an eye out for that.THRStyling wise I prefer this (click on image for a closer look) to the drama actress pastels and satin (or bridesmaids as Kirsten Dunst accurately referred to it) with Ilana Glazer’s tuxedo dress and Rachel Bloom’s white ladysuit being my personal favorites.

The actual roundtable (which you can read here) is unsurprisingly great and continues the theme of people I would love to have a boozy lunch/dinner with.THRSo far there’s only a couple of clips on YouTube – there are more on THR – including this fantastic Rachel Bloom video which makes me feel bad that I still haven’t watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and it is  also a good reminder that Bloom used to live with Ilana Glazer.

And Allison Janney gives a good lesson in things you shouldn’t say to a famous person or when you think a person looks like a famous person. Just don’t do it.

This has been a really good THR roundtable season also extending to the equally wonderful Tony actress discussion and there will be more Emmy chat on TV Ate My Wardrobe in the coming weeks. Emmy nomination day is July 14 and the Emmys will be held Sunday, September 18.

The 2016 Emmy Roundtable Season is Here!

18 May

It is no secret how much I love all things awards from the pre-nomination chatter to the red carpet decadence. Film award season stretches for months dominating the start of the year and now it is time for TV to bask in the glory of all things accolades; who deserves them, who should be nominated but probably won’t and the standout moments from television from the past year. Taking into account what will qualify as recency bias means certain things might get forgotten (anything that aired between June 1, 2015 and May 31 2016) so Mad Men is out (the finale aired May 17), but something like Show Me a Hero is in (which means Oscar Isaac in a tux hopefully). And maybe this is the year Emmy voters started watching The Americans.

The Hollywood Reporter’s roundtable season is one way to mark the official start of the Emmy chat period although Gold Derby has also been on fire with their one on one chats (including this great one with Poor Martha herself, Alison Wright) in recent weeks. A few months ago Jennifer Lopez posted a pictured on Instagram (which she sadly took down) of what turned out to be the drama actress roundtable; pretty much from that point on I have been anticipating the arrival of this discussion because this lineup is on fire.

Diversity or rather a lack of dominated award season and the actress roundtable and subsequent cover was a clear example of how Hollywood is failing, With regards to TV this cover and other recent ones have done a much better job at showcasing a variety of women who are leading the way in both comedy and drama. This isn’t to say TV is always the beacon of light in this department as Kristen Warner pointed out when the 2014 cover was released and it was only last year that a black woman finally won for Best Actress in a Drama Series with Viola Davis crushing it on every level with her acceptance speech. Opportunity is key and TV is currently offering a lot more of this.

Now to this year’s cover and this is an amazing group of actresses covering cable and network shows (and surprisingly no streaming) with Regina King and Kerry Washington straddling both with American Crime/The Leftovers and Scandal/Confirmation.dramasummercoverYou can watch videos from this roundtable over at The Hollywood Reporter including Sarah Paulson talking about sexism in relation to her role on American Crime Story as well as in her career in general, Regina King discussing directing and acting and Kirsten Dunst mentions how hard TV is work load wise in comparison to film (and she also mentions her friend Lizzy Caplan, which I of course adore). Sex scenes, producing, before they found fame are also covered and I’m looking forward to watching the whole conversation.

In terms of styling the drama actress cover tends to go in the dark and moody direction (of last year), black and white (see 2013) or pastels (as with 2014). Bold and bright is for the comedy actresses. Here it is pastels again with some white thrown in for good measure and they all look great facially, but I don’t love that Julianna Margulies and Jennifer Lopez are blending into the background. I think Sarah Paulson’s pleats are fantastic and Regina King’s pink dress is probably my other standout. I think Cannes has set a super high bar for Kirsten Dunst and this is just fine, but just that.

Read the whole roundtable discussion here.

Keep an eye out for more roundtable related discussions/covers in the coming weeks. Plus more Emmys chat soon!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

18 Mar

PaleyFest, SXSW and new magazine covers are all on this week’s “Out of the Box” menu and these events are the kind that bring out the best of the casual/fancy in-between zone, which post-award season is my favorite kind of dress code. Melissa BenoistAt the Supergirl PaleyFest panel Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist pairs a fantastic hypnotic skirt with a classic black turtleneck and I am so here for this level of fun. And she seems charming as hell to boot (even if I have fallen behind on this show – a mantra I could stitch on a cushion right now #PeakTV).Tracee Ellis RossAnother case of a super fun ensemble for PaleyFest and Tracee Ellis Ross combines two of my favorite things – sequins and stripes – at the Black-ish panel. The look on her face and pose says it all really. This is how an outfit should make you feel.Gillian Jacobs, Katie Micucci, Tami SagherAt the Don’t Think Twice SXSW screening floral and colorful geometric prints ruled supreme. Gillian Jacobs high neck sleeveless dress is mesmerizing and as with Mindy Kaling’s Mindy Project costume sneak peek Kate Micucci is making a strong case for floral rompers. Writer Tami Sagher also looks great and I am so ready for spring frocks.Zoe KazanBows and ascots were all over the recent runway shows and at the My Blind Brother screening Zoe Kazan’s long sleeve dress combines several box tickers; Peter Pan collar, floral and an ascot bow. Kazan has appeared a lot on TV Ate My Wardrobe recently and her insight regarding these events is why she is one of my favorite people I follow on Twitter including her reaction to the kinds of questions asked after this particular screening.

Yes this column is all about the ‘looks of the week,’ but I also get why it is important to ask questions about the film in question and not just dress details. And I definitely want to know about technical aspects, particularly all things costume (as anyone who visits this site will be aware). Jenny SlateMore spring foliage and while I’m not fully on board with sleeve cutouts, Jenny Slate is working this style at the My Blind Brother screening. Post SXSW Slate has gone on a roadtrip with Zoe Kazan and she has been documenting this very fun looking adventure on Instagram.Abbi and IlanaEntertainment Weekly hosted a party at the Spotify House celebrating Mr Robot at SXSW and quite a few of our faves showed up including Abbi Jacobson feeding my leather jacket and pleated skirt craving with Ilana Glazer hitting the t-neck points. This is more casual than the SXSW premiere events and style wise it is similar to the Sundance Film Festival, but switching out knitwear for denim short shorts. Tatiana MaslanyThis is cute and casual from Tatiana Maslany and perfect for hanging out on our future BFF dates. I am also impressed that even with the MANY hairstyles we have seen her rocking that her actual hair is different from every clone version. This is somewhere between Sarah and Helena’s huge blonde mass of curls.Alia Shawkat and Rami MalekTatiana Maslany’s boyfriend Tom Cullen captured the perfect “they look just like sisters’ shot of Maslany with Ilana Glazer and Alia Shawkat at the EW Mr Robot SXSW party and Shawkat poses with man of the hour and Mr Robot star Rami Malek. THRI love the annual Hollywood Reporter ‘Stylist and Stars’ issue and list especially as it comes so soon after a stylists busiest season. Rami Malek is wearing that stunning purple Calvin Klein suit he wore to the Independent Spirit Awards with Ilaria Urbinati and we gave her a shout out at the time because her work with Malek has been incredible.

Celebrating the people who give us plenty to write about when it comes to red carpet style is important and Leesa Evans (who is also a costume designer and has worked on a whole lot of Apatow produced movies such as Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck) appears with Amy Schumer, Jeff K. Kim alongside Michael B. Jordan (who always crushes any suit he is given) and another TV Ate My Wardrobe regular Brie Larson with Cristina Ehrlich. So yes let’s give a whole lot of love to the stylists.Kerry Washington ElleIt is rare to see a sweatshirt on the cover of a fashion magazine and awkward pulling it down aside, this cover is really great and Kerry Washington is always someone I am happy to see showcased in this manner. Washington discusses her new HBO movie Confirmation as well as the changing TV and film landscape. She talks about feeling invisible in her career pre-Scandal and that she’s had a conversation with Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson regarding this  and how “Television changed the game. Coming into people’s houses on a weekly basis is just a different kind of relationship to the public.” The issue is available to buy on both physical and digital newsstands now.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 Jan

We are deep in awards season, TCA has just finished and I’d somehow blanked on just how much happens at the start of the year – Sundance kicked off yesterday and Fashion Month is fast approaching. Critics’ Choice Awards and the Elle Women in TV event gave plenty of style treats, but don’t worry as there are lots of outfit delights below. Plus more early contenders for favorite 2016 magazine covers.

Holly TaylorHolly Taylor’s alphabet Nicole Miller NYC mini dress is ideal for the teen star and she’s even making me not hate peep toe booties for maybe the first time ever. A TCA miracle. New Americans artwork and an actual premiere date (March 16) have somehow made anticipation levels even higher. Now if only Taylor’s spy dog suggestion could get written into the show.

Annet MahendruTCA panels don’t come with a dress code and you can go from something on the funkier end such as Holly Taylor’s dress to what I would call fancy office wear with Annet Mahendru nailing the latter. Also killing it in the lipstick stakes.

Natalie MoralesIn combining two of my favorite things – sparkles and pleats – Natalie Morales makes me not hate the cropped element. This week is a weird, but this outfit is great.

Kether DonohueKether Donohue is on Grease: Live duty at the Fox TCA party and I love that she has gone full 50s on her outfit. The silhouette and bold floral pattern look really great on her. The only thing I would add is (you guessed it) red lipstick.

Aya Cash and Chris GeereSpeaking of lip color and Donohue’s You’re the Worst co-star Aya Cash nailed her TCA panel choice and I am always in the bag for Breton stripes. Special shout out to creator Stephen Falk for the polka dot socks which just make it into the shot.

Maisie WilliamsI might be coming down with something because I’m finding Maisie Williams’ floral choker to be rather charming rather than making me break out in teen flashback fashion nightmare sweats – I had some A+ terrible chokers because 90s – and it works with her amazing Mexican wrestler Markus Lupfer dress (which she modeled oh so well on Instagram).

Like Holly Taylor, Maisie Williams is a teen that dresses like a teen and this pleases me immensely. And she won Young Performer of the Year at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards and this reminds me that I still need to watch The Falling.

Aidan TurnerAlso here is Aidan Turner at the National Television Awards reminding me why I should be watching Poldark. Nice knitted tie to go with that smolder face.

IMG_2730Bust continues its run of interesting and fabulous cover stars with our favorite Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams. Everything about this from the styling, makeup and colors used makes Williams standout including pairing a bold lipstick with a bold lip hair clip (that I very much would like it my life).

The interview is where the really good stuff is at and Williams discusses everything from feminism, her upbringing, Angry Black Woman stereotypes, The Daily Show and mental health. It is a very interesting read that goes much deeper than your average magazine profile and this issue of Bust is available on both digital and actual newsstands.

Brie LarsonVery much in the can for everything Brie Larson and after seeing Room this week I would be thrilled to see her win the Oscar. The conversation around this year’s Academy Awards is more about who hasn’t been nominated and after last year’s disappointing selection of all white acting nominees (seriously how did David Oyelowo not get nominated for Selma?) for it to happen two years in a row is disheartening/anger inducing – I also saw Creed this week and Michael B. Jordan’s performance is definitely Oscar worthy. Larson herself points to this discussion when she posted this cover on her Instagram and the voting body is not going to be able ignore the dissatisfaction when it is all anyone wants to talk about.

As far as the cover goes, it is simple and striking but don’t make bodies and their popper crotches a thing again please. The interview is engaging and Larson comes across really well. The interviewer does not when she lists the things Larson did not want to go into detail about and it just feels like a bit of dick move to bring it up in the way she does. I’m looking forward to seeing everything Larson does next and I really don’t care what she ate during this chat.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Nov

For once on “Out of the Box” we’ve got more pants than frocks and it’s not just ladysuits hitting those sartorial highs. It is fun to mix things up especially as there has already been a fancy shindig this week that featured plenty of fabulous looks.

Keri RussellKeri Russell loves a leather pant and this all black ensemble that she wore to the Sierra Club’s “Act in Paris, A Night of Comedy and Climate Action” is very much her signature fuss free style. That doesn’t mean to say it’s a boring outfit and the variety of textures elevate the look. A slightly darker red lipstick is very welcome especially paired with this up do. For a bolder Keri Russell color palette take a gander at these Americans season 4 filming photos. Actual screaming at those boots.

Olivia WildeThis is Olivia Wilde’s third appearance on “Out of the Box” in almost as many weeks and while each one has been distinctive in its own way; the choice of shoe color has remained the same. Red pumps have given each look an extra pop and I am in love with this 70s inspired spin on tailored menswear that Wilde chose to wear for the Hollywood Reporter’s Indie Contenders roundtable. Yes I am thrilled that another roundtable season is upon us. The windowpane check high waisted Houghton pants are pure Annie Hall and the Kate Spade New York blouse adds a feminine twist.

Brit MarlingOh hey there Brit Marling! You can join #LadySuitWatch2015 with this flamboyant Gucci Resort pink affair at the LACMA 2015 Art+Film Gala. The pants are perhaps a little on the baggy side, which is giving me nostalgic flashbacks to everything 90s, but it’s still working like a charm. And one thing all the ladies in pants have in common this week is interesting collar/tie/scarf details.

Charlotte RamplingQueen Charlotte Rampling looking chic as hell at the AFI Fest event honoring Tom Courtney and her.

Kirsten DunstTaking a break from swooning over Kirsten Dunst’s Fargo costuming to bask in the delight which is this very pretty Rodarte dress.

Kirsten Dunst Net a PorterAnd now for swooning over Kirsten Dunst’s Net-a-Porter magazine editorial featuring a whole array of ladysuits; making it so on point with the overall theme of this week’s “Out of the Box.” Total kismet.

Taraji P. HensonTaraji P. Henson is on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter as part of the annual Beauty Issue making it her third time this year (the other covers are here and here) appearing with her makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff. They talk about avoiding Cookie like makeup on the red carpet so don’t expect to see any purple lipsticks and Taraji’s favorite red carpet look (the last Emmys). That is one killer brow arch that Henson is giving and the different shades of blue outfits add to this striking image.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

19 Jun

Photo calls in a dramatic looking location at the Monte Carlo TV Festival open this week’s “Out of the Box.” Plus various other events delivering summer sartorial highs.

Taraji P HensonTaraji P. Henson is working the sitting down couch pose with aplomb in Monte Carlo wearing a black and red striped RVN dress paired with glamorous shades and Stuart Weitzman strappy sandals.
Ming-Na WenA stunning view from the Monte Carlo TV Festival and a super cute gold frock for Ming-Na Wen in an ideal day time photo call outfit.

Zendaya Colemand and Shay MitchellShirt dresses are a wardrobe staple and Zendaya Coleman’s monochrome L’Agence version looks both comfy and stylish (my ideal combination) at the Children Mending Heart’s 2015 Empathy Rocks Fundraiser in the very sunny Malibu. Shay Mitchell’s white jumpsuit is maybe a tad on the super floaty side, but she still looks 70s cool in this ensemble.

Ashley MadekweA better take on the all white outfit comes courtesy of Ashley Madekwe in this effortlessly chic Max Mara number at the Max Mara 2015 Women In Film Face Of The Future Event. Red lipstick bonus points ahoy.

Michael B JordanReason number 1 to be excited about the Fantastic Four press tour is Michael B. Jordan knows how to wear not your average red carpet suit.

Emilia ClarkeA whimsical Dolce & Gabbana delight from Emilia Clarke who is all smiles despite being on crutches earlier in the day and still managing a pair of strappy heels for the occasion. Getting a strong hint of ‘smile through the pain’ face.

Lena DunhamIn a way I wish Lena Dunham had saved this Mary Katrantzou gown for the Emmys rather than the cover of The Hollywood Reporter because it is just that good.
