The 2016 Comedy Actress Emmy Roundtable

15 Jun

Emmy roundtable season continues and The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled the comedy actress panel featuring an amazing lineup of Lily Tomlin, Gina Rodriguez, Ilana Glazer, Niecy Nash, Allison Janney and Rachel Bloom.

Emmy voting is now open and you can see the full list of submissions here; once again Allison Janney has a chance of picking up two awards in comedy (Mom) and drama (Masters of Sex). I’m going to be taking a closer look at the costume design submissions in the not too distant future as a specific episode is listed for each one so keep an eye out for that.THRStyling wise I prefer this (click on image for a closer look) to the drama actress pastels and satin (or bridesmaids as Kirsten Dunst accurately referred to it) with Ilana Glazer’s tuxedo dress and Rachel Bloom’s white ladysuit being my personal favorites.

The actual roundtable (which you can read here) is unsurprisingly great and continues the theme of people I would love to have a boozy lunch/dinner with.THRSo far there’s only a couple of clips on YouTube – there are more on THR – including this fantastic Rachel Bloom video which makes me feel bad that I still haven’t watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and it is  also a good reminder that Bloom used to live with Ilana Glazer.

And Allison Janney gives a good lesson in things you shouldn’t say to a famous person or when you think a person looks like a famous person. Just don’t do it.

This has been a really good THR roundtable season also extending to the equally wonderful Tony actress discussion and there will be more Emmy chat on TV Ate My Wardrobe in the coming weeks. Emmy nomination day is July 14 and the Emmys will be held Sunday, September 18.

The 2016 Emmy Roundtable Season is Here!

18 May

It is no secret how much I love all things awards from the pre-nomination chatter to the red carpet decadence. Film award season stretches for months dominating the start of the year and now it is time for TV to bask in the glory of all things accolades; who deserves them, who should be nominated but probably won’t and the standout moments from television from the past year. Taking into account what will qualify as recency bias means certain things might get forgotten (anything that aired between June 1, 2015 and May 31 2016) so Mad Men is out (the finale aired May 17), but something like Show Me a Hero is in (which means Oscar Isaac in a tux hopefully). And maybe this is the year Emmy voters started watching The Americans.

The Hollywood Reporter’s roundtable season is one way to mark the official start of the Emmy chat period although Gold Derby has also been on fire with their one on one chats (including this great one with Poor Martha herself, Alison Wright) in recent weeks. A few months ago Jennifer Lopez posted a pictured on Instagram (which she sadly took down) of what turned out to be the drama actress roundtable; pretty much from that point on I have been anticipating the arrival of this discussion because this lineup is on fire.

Diversity or rather a lack of dominated award season and the actress roundtable and subsequent cover was a clear example of how Hollywood is failing, With regards to TV this cover and other recent ones have done a much better job at showcasing a variety of women who are leading the way in both comedy and drama. This isn’t to say TV is always the beacon of light in this department as Kristen Warner pointed out when the 2014 cover was released and it was only last year that a black woman finally won for Best Actress in a Drama Series with Viola Davis crushing it on every level with her acceptance speech. Opportunity is key and TV is currently offering a lot more of this.

Now to this year’s cover and this is an amazing group of actresses covering cable and network shows (and surprisingly no streaming) with Regina King and Kerry Washington straddling both with American Crime/The Leftovers and Scandal/Confirmation.dramasummercoverYou can watch videos from this roundtable over at The Hollywood Reporter including Sarah Paulson talking about sexism in relation to her role on American Crime Story as well as in her career in general, Regina King discussing directing and acting and Kirsten Dunst mentions how hard TV is work load wise in comparison to film (and she also mentions her friend Lizzy Caplan, which I of course adore). Sex scenes, producing, before they found fame are also covered and I’m looking forward to watching the whole conversation.

In terms of styling the drama actress cover tends to go in the dark and moody direction (of last year), black and white (see 2013) or pastels (as with 2014). Bold and bright is for the comedy actresses. Here it is pastels again with some white thrown in for good measure and they all look great facially, but I don’t love that Julianna Margulies and Jennifer Lopez are blending into the background. I think Sarah Paulson’s pleats are fantastic and Regina King’s pink dress is probably my other standout. I think Cannes has set a super high bar for Kirsten Dunst and this is just fine, but just that.

Read the whole roundtable discussion here.

Keep an eye out for more roundtable related discussions/covers in the coming weeks. Plus more Emmys chat soon!

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

30 Sep

A whole lot returning shows and soon to be returning shows as the new fall season is here. Which means plenty of social media engagement and this is one bumper “Behind the Insta-Scenes.”

https://instagram.com/p/8N-FbpPqE-/?taken-by=skittishkid

Breaking theme early and let’s start with the photo I can’t even deal with; dudes from Friday Night Lights and an adorable baby.

Empire returned last week and cast viewing parties for the premiere were all the rage.

Taraji P Henson caught the more chaotic side.

And new cast member Marisa Tomei was joined by a few famous friends (and Empire co-creator Lee Daniels).

The HUGE Empire viewing numbers are a good indicator of hype matching the amount of people watching and Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez posted this selfie from the Emmys to celebrate its return.

One more Empire post and this super fierce Cookie in sweats look.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine also returned this week much to our delight (Gina’s sweater game was the human equivalent of the 100 emoji) and this photo from a night shoot is old horror movie reaction fantastic. Stephanie Beatriz is giving glasses frames inspiration.

And she is also killing it on the work snuggie front.

Victor Garber is now on Instagram! So hopefully this means Alias Throwback Thursday posts are coming our way.

Getting a good look at Willa Holland in Thea’s crime fighting costume on Arrow. I have questions relating to the treadmill.

Willa Holland still in her new getup with the Arrow ladies/bad ass bitches.

Rounding out the CW superhero Instas with The Flash’s Danielle Panabaker showing off some heavier bangs for Caitlin and a pair of boots that will probably never be seen on screen.

Moving onto another CW show and Jane the Virgin returns in just under two weeks! That is a very interesting looking table/assortment of drinks and snacks.

More Jane and this time goofing around with snacks. Or recreating that iconic John Locke Lost moment.

Emilia Clarke finally her hands on a Game of Thrones Emmy. Or rather someone’s hand. And that’s what holds her hair in under all of Daenerys’ locks.

While we’re on the subject of Emmy winners.

There’s the posing hard version…

And the ‘they’re just like us’ version.

Bookending this week’s post with another adorable photo.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Emmys

22 Sep

A special Emmys “Behind the Insta-Scenes” with TV stars documenting the whole process from pre-parties, getting ready rituals to the day after.

The Orange is the New Black cast are a regular fixture on this column and they really have the whole Emmy weekend covered; it is good to see this much enthusiasm not just for their show, but the whole experience. For anyone that wants a break from all things Emmys the standard TV Instagram will appear as usual tomorrow.

https://instagram.com/p/73UzTOSaiG/?taken-by=americaferrera

One fun thing about having so many TV stars in the same place is the random group photos; case in point and Gwendoline Christie looks like a very proud mother.

Sometimes they give us ideas of actors who should star in something together or which shows should do a crossover.

And of course there are reunions that make your heart melt.

Dream Scandal guest stars alert.

Kerry Washington has an extra pair of paws to help her get ready.

https://instagram.com/p/73bbY9nLrU/?taken-by=hereisgina

Plenty of accessorizes and boob wrangling choices to choose from.

As with many stars who hit the Emmy red carpet Jessica Williams gives a well deserved shout out to her glam squad and this is a really stunning photo.

Coffee is just as vital pre show as it is the day after. Filming an unaware Taraji P. Henson has turned into a bit of a sport.

The same could be said for dancing in the mirror.

Meanwhile some of the Game of Thrones cast were too busy working on the new season to join the party. Now can someone zoom in on the script text and see what it says.

I’m still very firmly on the fence about January Jones’ jumpsuit but her Insta game is always strong.

Yep.

Pretty frocks and stair hanging out; for some reason this is giving me album cover vibes, butt needs more pouting.

Lots of people in this ballroom and the Orange is the New Black cast have not let us down when it comes to capturing every moment.

There were of course lots of winners. And sometimes winners gatecrashing other winners.

Denial is useful and also hilarious.

And sometimes losing just plain sucks.

https://instagram.com/p/74dj5ANCAX/?taken-by=robmoynihan

See Veep really did win a lot and this is either a table of awards or a whole lot of intricate weaponry.

Peter Dinklage has chosen to show off Maisie Williams’ amazing penguin tux clutch instead of his Emmy. I mean his Emmy isn’t dressed this fancy so this is a solid decision.

Uzo Aduba knows how to get the party started in a sea of other pink dresses.

More pink dress glory and I love that these two are besties in real life.

https://instagram.com/p/756Jp_JqAK/?taken-by=daniebb3

This dress really is a posing dream.

The morning after coffee is also hella important. And sunglasses.

JLaw proving once again why she is fantasy BFF material. Another tick in the box for day after awards show sunglasses.

Best of the Emmy 2015 Red Carpet – Pretty in Pink

21 Sep

So much color on the Emmy red carpet this year and while the yellow trend was trying to happen, the pink frocks caused a much bigger impact.

Elisabeth MossStarting with the boldest of pink tones with Elisabeth Moss in a magenta Oscar de la Renta gown and somehow she has not and will not win an Emmy for Mad Men. Glad to see her going for a lip color which is just as strong as her dress.

Samira Wiley EmmysSamira Wiley looks like a fabulous superhero in caped fuchsia Jill Stuart.

Christine BaranskiChristine Baranski forever slaying in hot pink Zac Posen.

Uzo AdubaMore hot pink offerings and this time a dash of navy breaks things up on Uzo Aduba’s charming custom Jonathan Cohen halter neck gown.

Jessica PareThe Mad Men cast were out in force and celebrating in style with Jessica Pare joining the pink ladies in an ethereal draped frock.

Maisie WilliamsMaisie Williams is a lady after my own heart as she adores a dress with pockets and I adore this pink quilted dress paired with heels; so many Clueless related feelings. Cher would be all over this.

Jane KrawkowskiGiving us much needed posing drama in Bibhu Mohapatra is Jane Krakowski.

Yael StoneThe problem with posing in front of light backboards is lighter dress tones such as Yael Stone’s kinda disappear, but thankfully she is giving good twirl to show off this super pretty frock.

Joanne FroggattOne final pink and Joanne Froggatt looks like she is beating the heat in this floaty and romantic J. Mendel dress with a dash of train extravagance.

Best of the Emmy 2015 Red Carpet – Sparkles, LadySuits and Shoulder Chains

21 Sep

Welcome to the TV Ate My Wardrobe Emmy red carpet coverage and after plenty of amazing pre-party looks the main event delivers on fantastic frocks, ladysuits and some eyebrow raising outfit choices. There are many outfits to discuss and so we have three posts offering up our highlights of the gowns, suits and those garments which are harder to categorize.

Enjoy!

Aubrey PlazaHands down Aubrey Plaza in glitzy Alexandre Vauthier gown is my overall favorite of the night and everything about this is perfection; Aubrey and her Parks and Rec character April are TV Ate My Wardrobe style queens and she makes this whole thing look so effortlessly cool.

Tatiana MaslanyWhen Tatiana Maslany stepped onto the red carpet I maybe had a minor meltdown at this #LadySuitWatch2015 moment. Maslany did joke that she wished her Bouchra Jarrar white tux was cutoff shorts instead (much like her Friday party outfit), in fact I don’t think she was joking as everyone appeared to be melting in the LA heat. All the heart eyes.

Taraji P HensonWearing custom Alexander Wang and spicing up a black dress with bike chain straps, pleats and the ideal balance of sheer and cut out elements makes Taraji P. Henson a winner on the red carpet, even if she did miss out in her category. Not that she seemed to mind as she cheered on Viola Davis.

Christina HendricksAfter attending the Naeem Khan NYFW runway show last week Christina Hendricks chose this designer for her last Mad Men Emmys moment and she looks like an Art Deco sensation in this gold beaded gown.

Carrie BrownsteinMore #LadySuitWatch2015 bliss with Carrie Brownstein in Stella McCartney. That lip color!

Kerry WashingtonTalk about bold sparkle from Kerry Washington in Marc Jacobs. This is one fancy battle Washington is headed toward.

Claire DanesMore shoulder chains from another Best Drama Actress nominee with Claire Danes in a sequinned Prada delight and sporting a Grace Kelly like faux-bob.

Jill SolowayJill Soloway rocks a lot of polka dots.

Sophie TurnerA different spin on red carpet attire and another take on menswear trend from Sophie Turner in a Galvan jumpsuit and this shade of violet blue with her red hair is stunning. Excellent accessorizing too.

Lena HeadeyGame of Thrones did very well on the awards and style front and even though Lena Headey didn’t win in her category this Zuhair Murad Couture gown is divine.

Nikolaj Coster-WaldauWhile we’re on the subject of GoT here is a hot dude in a tux break courtesy of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Oh, hello.

Sofia VergaraThis is a signature Sofia Vergara look in metallic St. John and a style that is still working wonders for her.

Amanda PeetGonna throw in a couple of black frocks to round this first post off with and Amanda Peet’s red lipstick game is strong and the same can be said for her Michael Kors floral textured gown.

Lady GagaLady Gaga sauntered on the red carpet looking dramatic and Old Hollywood with a modern twist in Brandon Maxwell. I cannot wait to see more of her American Horror Story: Hotel costuming (even if I will probably only watch a handful of episodes).

JLDThings you can rely on from the Emmys – if Julia Louis-Dreyfus is nominated she will win and her dress choice will be something classic. Tick for both and while her Safiyaa gown is not going to reinvent the wheel she does look fabulous.

A late #LadySuitWatch2015 addition and one I can’t believe I missed earlier because Lisa Kudrow looks like a BAMF here. And while she didn’t get her Valerie moment I’m so glad The Comeback was at least in the fight. Stay tuned for Pretty in Pink and Bold Color and Print red carpet rundowns.

Best of the Pre-Emmy Parties – Tea and Nominees

20 Sep

All the parties this weekend for those who work in TV land and Emmy day is here! Before we get to the fancy dresses of the awards (check back in the morning) there are more fun frocks, ladysuits and generally fabulous outfits and accessories to scroll through.

Yesterday we covered the Entertainment Weekly and Variety shindigs; both offering some excellent sartorial moments and today we are taking a look at the BAFTA TV Tea and the TV Academy pre-game event. Quite a few of these actresses are on our most anticipated list for tonight.

Tatiana Maslany BAFTAAfter dipping her toe into the menswear trend in tailored perfection Tatiana Maslany has gone for something far dreamier in Preen by Thornton Bregazzi. The colorful stripe detail on the sleeves gives this dress a much needed pop of color.

Tatiana Maslany LegoNow for a closeup up of her Lego clutch from Les Petits Joueurs and a brand that is getting a lot of red carpet attention of late; including Taraji P. Henson accessorizing her Empire premiere look with this fantastic keyboard version.

Tatiana Maslany Emmy pre partyOne Tatiana Maslany is never enough as Orphan Black is so good at pointing out and here she is at the Emmy nominee event wearing one of my favorite designers; in a striking Roksanda Ilincic skirt from the S/S 15 collection. Paired with a simple black tee and another Les Petits Joueurs clutch (you can’t see it in this shot but this is it) to complete a winning ensemble.

Andre HollandHot dude in a suit break courtesy of The Knick’s Andre Holland. I am very excited to have this show back next month.Kiernan Shipka BAFTAThis could be standard cute dress fare from Kiernan Shipka, but the interesting color/texture choice makes her stand out.

Sophie TurnerSophie Turner can join the #ladysuitwatch2015 gang wearing Chloe even without a jacket and this is a fun take on this trend.

Uzo AdubaA floral treat from Uzo Aduba in an ideal dress for BAFTA TV tea.

Madeleine MantockAnother and somewhat abstract take on a floral print with a lovely watercolor effect from Madeleine Mantock. Not sure about the sliver wedges with this outfit and they’d be more suited for something a little bit more 70s. At least they’re not beige.

Yara ShahidiSo Yara Shahidi’s strappy sandals are a little on the beige meh side, but the rest of her outfit is so vibrant and fun that I’ll give her a pass.

Emily Robinson and Jill SolowayJill Soloway has moved away from 60s optical illusions to a trippy forest mural and once again I am so in love with her choice of buttoned up patterned shirt. Mini-Gaby Hoffmann (the Transparent flashback casting is so spot on it is eerie) Emily Robinson goes beige sandals, but her dress is adorable.

Best of the Pre-Emmys Parties – The Frocks

19 Sep

If the pre-Emmys parties are anything to go on then we are in for a treat tomorrow as there are plenty of fabulous outfits on display from #LadySuitWatch2015 to the patterned and super chic dresses below. There’s a strong element of fun at these parties as everyone is relaxed (or at least pretending to be) prior to the big show. This color, print and the caped sleeves makes Troian Bellisario an instant standout. Plus she’s pulling off what could be an awkward length. Plenty of fantastic cute above the knee frocks including Constance Zimmer’s long sleeve black and white floral delight. Currently suffering from UnREAL withdrawal.More florals and an 80s prom feel from Sarah Hyland in Oscar de la Renta. All this needs to complete this theme (or probably doesn’t) is a giant bow. Pockets! And a romantic take on this on trend from Grey’s Anatomy’s Camilla Luddington wearing an A.L.C. dress and Stuart Weitzman heels. Tina Majorino is still rocking one of my fave short hair styles (and I might be biased, but I love a short haircut) and she looks flawless in embellished metallics. A lace delight from Zoe Lister-Jones and a berry lip color I’m now adding to my Wish List (when I find out the shade/brand).   Zoe Kazan’s dress is a patchwork perfection and bf Paul Dano looks dashing in all the brown with a hint of blue. I got Olive Kitteridge on DVD (yes I still get those) for my birthday and I’m really looking forward to having my heart broken all over again. The amazing colourful prints continue with Yvette Nicole Brown in Eliza J. Color blocks for Erinn Hayes and this is giving me all the 70s really cool party vibes. Another ensemble that’s reading my favorite fashion decade (I’m so fine with the heavy 70s influence right now) and Maggie Gyllenhaal needs a cocktail to complete this look.  Getting a Cabaret feeling from Gwendoline Christie’s robe like dress and only Christie can wear something like this and induce all the gleeful clapping.A fun play on black fit and flare with Jane Krawkowski adding a touch of stripes to a classic style.
This is a really great silhouette on Christina Hendricks and another black dress triumph. I toyed with putting Danielle Brooks in the #LadySuitWatch2015 post as this Lafayette 148 New York dress is tuxedo inspired, but it doesn’t really matter whichever list Brooks goes on as she looks incredible either way.

Best of the Pre-Emmys Parties – #LadySuitWatch2015

19 Sep

One trend we can’t get enough of here at TV Ate My Wardrobe comes in the form of tailored menswear with a feminine spin. The reigning queen of #LadySuitWatch2015 on television is Hannibal’s Alana Bloom and she’s got some real life rivals from the Entertainment Weekly and Variety pre-Emmys parties. This very busy fashion month just got a whole lot busier and with plenty more sartorial treats. Aya Cash looks spectacular in green and blue tartan pairing it with a simple white blouse. Between Gretchen’s buying stuff meltdown (of which someone very near and dear compared me to and I’m not sure how to take that) on this week’s You’re the Worst and this ensemble I am very much doing all the heart eyes at Cash. Someone who is always on point is Ashley Madekwe and she is killing in in this double breasted matching green suit. If you look at Jill Soloway’s outfit for too long it feels a little hypnotic or like an optical illusion from the 1960s, but this is very much in line with her style and I love the buttoned up blouse. #LadySuitWatch2015 isn’t just about the pants and Tatiana Maslany black shorts look is a super chic and a playful twist on this style. And I just remembered that Maslany is nominated for an Emmy. That’s enough to temporarily forget Emmy snub sadness.  This is how you do elements of sheer without making me want to pull my hair out. Plus Amanda Peet has the all important red lip perfection going on. So we’ve entered the jumpsuit portion and while I still have conflicted feelings about this garment type (I still need to try on more than one this year), Beth Behrs in Elisabeth Franchi is giving me nothing but good feelings. There’s something very 70s about Uzo Aduba’s wide legged white jumpsuit and it looks ideal for dancing in, but with plenty of spilling peril.

For the best of the pre-Emmys frocks head here.

2015 Emmy Nominations Closer Look – Costumes (Updated to Include Winners)

17 Jul

Ah the Emmy nominations and the usual amounts of rage and joy were felt as the names were read out. There were the expected omissions which still caused the air to turn blue (The Americans getting nothing aside from writing and guest star and Jane the Virgin getting shut out) to the surprises (TATIANA) and out of the 14 performances on my wish list, 5 made the cut. Now let’s take a look at who has been nominated for costume design.

Game of ThronesThe costume design awards are split into two categories and unlike previous years which have mirrored the way the acting awards are divided between series and then mini-series/TV movie/special they are now organizing it by contemporary and period/fantasy. This makes so much sense and it means contemporary shows which have been overlooked in the past now get their chance to shine.

That being said there are still a few notable omissions and I cannot understand how Janie Bryant’s work on Mad Men has not been recognized. It is baffling when you consider the influence and impact this costuming has had on the way we talk about costume design (see everything to do with “Mad Style“) and runway trends. I would maybe understand if the final season of Mad Men was lacking in the nomination department overall and yet it has 11 in total.

Adding to this list of snubs with shows talked on a weekly basis here at TV Ate My Wardrobe include Ane Crabtree’s exquisite work on Masters of Sex, Jenny Gering’s subtle take on early 80s and all things excellent spy wear on The Americans and while I have fallen out of love with Scandal, Lyn Paolo’s costume design and all those wine cardigans are still on top of the game. Not to mention Diane Lockhart and Alicia Florrick’s executive attire that goes beyond boring pantsuits on The Good Wife thanks to Daniel Lawson.

One super bright and pattern filled comedy has been nominated and I am thrilled to see Salvador Perez’s name on there for The Mindy Project, but it seems like there is only room for one color soaked comedy as Tina Nigro is sadly not included for The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Going through the full list of Emmy nomination ballot submissions means I am also now sad that the “Sunday Funday” episode of You’re the Worst missed the cut (there are SO many good costumes in this one) along with the Val episode of Broad City, Halloween on Looking, the pilot episodes of Agent Carter and The Knick, plus the amazing coat filled season 3 opener of Orphan Black. I’ve only seen the first couple of episodes of Outlander and yet I know this is another big disappointment and it straddles both period and fantasy elements.

Of course not everyone can be nominated but as I scroll through the list there are some really disappointing entries that didn’t make it. Hannibal was not eligible for voting and so the initial lack of murder suit outrage was quickly subdued.

By submitting a specific episode we can see exactly which pieces they are being judged on and I am so pleased to see Daenery’s incredible dragon neckwear is featured in the Game of Thrones “Dance of Dragons” choice. Empire has two nominations and the costume design team has changed between the pilot and full season with both getting recognized.
