Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Magazine Cover Roundup

13 Mar

A bonus “Out of the Box” as there is just too many brilliant new magazine covers to squeeze into our regular column. I have in the past talked about my magazine feelings (they are strong) and new magazine cover week is often a mixture of disappointment and excitement; sometimes bad photoshop takes the shine off, alternatively a cover star might be a someone unexpected and amazing.

Different editorials are aiming for a variety of things with shifting units being high on the list of priorities and the cover has a huge impact on this. Fashion, entertainment and lifestyle magazines all feature in this week’s column and I will be adding all these issues to my already burgeoning print and digital collection.

Mad MenThe first of many Mad Men covers to come celebrating/sobbing over the final hurrah and they are starting with a doozy on The Hollywood Reporter. In the issue they go back to the beginning with an oral history and the only thing this cover shot is lacking is some Kiernan Shipka. They all look fabulous and if you want to find the perfect way to distract yourself just take a look at the Jon Hamm close-up portraits.

Maisie WilliamsApril is going to be a great month for TV and Game of Thrones is high on the most anticipated list. Experiencing the build-up buzz for the first time after finally catching up last year is going to be fun; case in point the unveiling of Arya Stark’s new look with a hint of “Tragic Kingdom” era Gwen Stefani on the cover of Entertainment Weekly got me all a fluster. New costumes to pore over ahoy.

IMG_1406Because all things Broad City, including this New York cover lead to joy (except the realization the season finale is next week).

Marie Claire Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington is mesmerizing on Marie Claire’s April edition and after last month’s InStyle debacle it is an image that thankfully looks like the Scandal star. It is a captivating pose and while they’ve gone for an Olivia Pope clothing color palette, there is plenty of Washington shining through with very un-Olivia like tussled hair. Soon to be Scandal guest star Lena Dunham has written the piece aptly entitled “Why We All Want to be Kerry Washington.”

Robin WrightAnother stare into your soul cover from another amazing lady; Robin Wright is exuding all kinds of cool on Vanity Fair and she is the main reason House of Cards is calling out to me. Short hair perfection and the story behind this amazing cut is that it was a necessity ““I was just cutting off damaged hair—too much bleach over months of [appearing in] different movies. It was a mercy killing, but it works for the character.” Iconic haircuts often are the result of an accident (see the Rachel) and this is one of those.

Head here for a PaleyFest themed “Out of the Box.”

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Mar

PaleyFest is in full swing and this week’s “Out of the Box” is dedicated to the style highs from the ScandalThe Good WifeBroad CityOutlander, Homeland and Girls panels. The line between casual/fancy is blurred at these types of events and on the whole it is probably best to remember there will be a lot of sitting down photos after the obligatory red carpet posing. Red carpet is where our focus lies, but first a moment of panel facial expression joy.

Julianna Margulies and Christine BaranskiThis shot of Julianna Margulies and Christine Baranski is everything and I’m pretty sure their laughter could power buildings.

Kerry WashingtonA very fun look from Kerry Washington in Mary Katrantzou, which is all textured goodness including a sequined bodice and delightful collar. The pop of yellow and a darker lip color really makes this outfit sing.

Darby StanchfieldAnother Scandal style high with Darby Stanchfield wearing a whole lot red in a 2nd Skin Co. super sparkly frock. This is an occasion where bold lip color is not needed as that would be a shade red too far.

Lena Dunham and JenjiPatterns ahoy from Lena Dunham in Tanya Taylor and Jenni Konner working metallic color explosion with a black sweater and looking fantastic in the process.

Abbi Jacobson PaleyFestRelaxed cool from Abbi Jacobson at the Comedy Central panel in this not quite polka dot sleeveless shirt.

Caitriona BalfeLooking a whole lot like the tuxedo inspired jumpsuit Maya Rudolph wore at the SNL 40th anniversary is Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe. A reminder to catch up with Outlander before it returns coupled with the desire to finally try a jumpsuit on at some point in the near future.

Claire Danes PaleyFestLeaving Claire Danes in Proenza Schouler until last because I’m pretty sure this can be filed under “Danes Style Blindness” as the snakeskin strip of random is a whole lot of what? and yet I also think she has pulled it off. Like I said this is a case of “Danes Style Blindness” – the phenomenon to describe someone who you think looks amazing no matter what they are wearing.

Bonus “Out of the Box” this week with this magazine cover special.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Mar

Now award season is over (until the summer when the TV awards kick in) we’ve got a mixture of magazine covers, fashion campaigns and movie premieres for this week’s style highs. Michelle WilliamsMy Michelle Williams style crush goes way back and the April UK Elle cover is a fashion delight. Sometimes actress fashion house pairings don’t quite mesh from print ads to the red carpet (*cough Jennifer Lawrence/Christian Dior cough*), but Michelle Williams and Louis Vuitton has worked on every level. This is twee without being too cutesy using leather and lace; the orange is spectacular and it is just a fun cover. With Williams, editorials often lean on fragility with a hint sadness, sometimes a wisp of whimsy and I am glad this moves beyond that.

Gummer sisters and other storiesMamie and Grace Gummer join their model sister Louisa in the new & Other Stories campaign and this Co-Lab collection by Clare Vivier is a mixture of French chic with Cali cool. The range of bags, cropped denim and silk shirts on display here is making me clamor for spring and I’m already adding items to my wish list such as this leather shoulder bag Gillian Jacobs showed off on Instagram and the red one Louisa carries in the shot above.

Mamie GummerOne more shot from the new & Other Stories campaign and while I am not entirely sold on the quasi-fanny pack leather belted bag, Mamie Gummer’s slight 70s flare and shirt styling is giving me all the Jamie Lee Curtis in the first Halloween feels. The jeans aren’t as high in the waist and the shirt is a slightly different color, but it still has the same effortless quality.

Lily James and Richard Madden CinderellaLily James goes full Disney princess in Elie Saab at the premiere of Cinderella, which is surely the ideal time to embrace ethereal pretty. Ol’ King of the North (or that should read former *sob*) Richard Madden is playing his part well and if only he had been allowed to be a beardy Prince Charming.

Karen GillanRemember when Henry lent Eliza his coat on Selfie and she fashioned it into a super sexy funky outfit? Karen Gillan’s Burberry trench look is giving me a whole bunch of Selfie feels at the LA Cinderella premiere. I am still in mourning for this charming, funny and cancelled too soon delight; this outfit only adds to the Eliza and Henry sadness while looking cool at the same time. Now might be the ideal moment to pour one out to Selfie while singing along to the most heartbreaking version of “Chandelier.”

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

27 Feb

The Independent Spirit Awards got lost in the Oscar red carpet crazy and because it is one of my favorite red carpet events – there is SO much color and pattern – most of this week’s “Out of the Box” is dedicated to this with a smattering of the post Oscars Vanity Fair party. February is a whirlwind of fancy pants dresses (sometimes literally), so I am glad to round off the month on a high of print and bold tones.

Aubrey PlazaAfter tearfully saying goodbye to TV Ate My Wardrobe style icon April Ludgate it is only right to start with Aubrey Plaza in floral Suno; even though Parks is over it is safe to say Plaza will be gracing these pages a whole bunch.

Jenny SlateI have strong feelings about Jenny Slate, Mary Katrantzou and the color yellow; together this is perfection. Related – I have spent the past few days saying “look like dis” all thanks to this amazing Kroll Show sketch.

Ava DuVernayCombining pockets, print and color for one exceptional ensemble is Ava DuVernay.

Gillian JacobsIt is a cute sundress palooza and Gillian Jacobs is an “Out of the Box” staple when it comes to outfits like this Preen frock and red pumps.

Cate BlanchettCate Blanchett is a style queen and she gets the laidback vibe spot in a heart fluttering Schiaparelli Couture.

Aja Naomi KingMore glorious yellow from How to Get Away with Murder’s Aja Naomi King with a dash of snakeskin pattern pumps. The big question is after ditching HTGAWM mid-season should I watch last night’s finale?

Julianne MooreOne reason I love the Independent Spirit Awards red carpet so much is it is the optimal point of fun and fancy; where dress length can be anything you want. And Julianne Moore’s Christian Dior Couture sparkly mini number ticks all the boxes.

David OyelowoEven the dudes get in on the colorful attire, although David Oyelowo showed at the Oscars it isn’t a onetime thing and while this baby blue suit is a little rumpled in places I am still swooning all over the place.

Emmy RossumWell this just delightful and Emmy Rossum in Oscar de la Renta has me wishing it was a little warmer right now (layers and layers of knits is what I have covered myself in today).

Rinko KikuchiI’m a little mad I didn’t get to this red carpet sooner because look how perfect all of these dresses are?! Another incredible floral beauty with Rinko Kikuchi in Chanel.

Rashida JonesA switch in party but not pattern joy with Rashida Jones at the post Oscars Vanity Fair shindig looking resplendent in Andrew Gn.

Mindy KalingDeviating from the color/pattern theme and Mindy Kaling wearing another incredible creation from Mindy Project costume designer Salvador Perez. Kaling is normally all about the bold and while this has neither color nor print it might be one of the boldest outfits she has worn. Simply stunning.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

20 Feb

A big pre-Oscar weekend style edition of “Out of the Box” with NYFW runway watching style, Costume Designers Guild Awards, Vanity Fair celebrating Young Hollywood and the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event.

Natasha Lyonne and Nicki MinajNicki Minaj and Natasha Lyonne at the Alexander Wang runway show this week pulling their best front row DGAF faces.

Allison WilliamsAllison Williams’ style leans towards the classic and she looks at home in matching Spring 2015 Michael Kors floral crop top and skirt at the Michael Kors runway show. With the current New York weather I suddenly turn into my mother and get concerned about how cold she must be,

Christina HendricksA super sophisticated look for Christina Hendricks at Zac Posen in Zac Posen. That is an excellent shade of red lipstick and I’m already getting weepy about the end of Mad Men whenever I see one of the cast members.

Alison WrightDitching the 80s frumpy sweaters for something with an air of relaxed cool at the Tracy Reese show is Alison Wright from The Americans and I am particularly eyeing up her necklace. Wright is also demonstrating how you can do cold weather legs and still look fashion ready.

Kiernan ShipkaMoving on to the Costume Designers Guild Award and Kiernan Shipka is a vision in Oscar de la Renta. This lady is incredible. Also *sob* (see earlier Christina Hendricks remark).

Nicole BeharieOf course we know that actresses are not going to mirror the style of the characters they play (see Alison Wright from The Americans), however as I am so used to seeing Nicole Beharie in a range of leather jackets, jeans and boots on Sleepy Hollow this color/pattern Luis Antonio explosion at the Vanity Fair Young Hollywood event is a fun change-up.

Uzo AdubaThe OITNB ladies have been doing the award and party circuit (deservedly so) and I might have the opposite problem when Netflix gifts us with the next season readjusting to seeing them in their prison beige. Uzo Aduba is a picture of sophistication at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon in this pretty floral L.K. Bennett dress and orange Stuart Weitzman heels.

Laverne CoxPleats are a clothing weakness for me and Laverne Cox does understated elegance which is perfect for this daytime Essence event wearing a Whistles skirt with a Theory top.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Feb

New York Fashion Week has just kicked off and will dominate TV Ate My Wardrobe over the next few days; this edition of “Out of the Box” includes a couple of NYFW moments, magazine covers/editorials and other red carpet events.

Elizabeth BanksElizabeth Banks made our Best of 2014 “Out of the Box” list and here she is at the Berlin Film Festival for Love & Mercy in another stunning Elie Saab Couture gown. I cannot wait for the Pitch Perfect 2 promo train.

Tracee Ellis Ross EssenceTracee Ellis Ross looks like she is about to play a killer and super stylish game of tennis on the cover of Essence and I love it.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw Town & CountryTown & Country delivers another beautiful editorial this time for the US edition and featuring Gugu Mbatha-Raw. In addition to these amazing shots Mbatha-Raw gives a good style message to live by “It’s important to know that it’s okay to be your natural self. It’s also okay to dress up and wear makeup and hair extensions if you want, so long as you don’t feel like you need that or will be worthless without it. The point is, it should be a choice.”

Laverne CoxA celeb filled runway at the Go Red for Women event and Laverne Cox works her Donna Karan gown by turning the sheer cape into a twirling sensation.

SJPSuper floaty pink dress, sleeveless check wraparound coat; this is SJP NYFW perfection when unveiling her new shoe collection with Tome this week.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Feb

Award season continues which means there’s plenty more fabulous outfits on display in this week’s “Out of the Box.” Plus magazine editorials and other red carpet events with more pleasing sartorial offerings.

Emma StoneAt the Oscar nominee luncheon Emma Stone wears the dream combination of stripes and polka dots. Throw in some sequins on this Michael Kors ensemble and I am in clothing heaven. Now to find out what color lipstick Stone is wearing.

Laura DernAt the same event Laura Dern wears a multicolored Roland Mouret dress which I can’t stop staring; it is both hypnotic and elegant.

America FerreraMore Oscar events and America Ferrera is a shimmery delight at The Hollywood Reporter nominee night party wearing Pamella Roland Resort 2015. So much sparkle to add to the trend that was big at the Golden Globes.

Jay DuplassSo maybe the pants are a tad creased but it has been a busy month for Jay Duplass at Sundance, promoting a new show and on the awards circuit. Duplass is once again king of the patterned shirt although his Transparent character would definitely have it buttoned to the top.

Jenny SlateJenny Slate has me longing for warmer weather in this very pretty Dolce & Gabbana floral frock at the Virtuoso Awards. Kicking up the cute with bow detail Christian Louboutin ‘Justinodo’ sandals.

Kerry WashingtonAdding to one of the most delightful editions of “Out of the Box” is Kerry Washington in polka dot Dolce & Gabbana at the launch party for the new spring Scandal inspired collection at The Limited. Love the Roger Vivier ‘Love’ bag and red lip/nail combo.

Sophie turner town and countryLooking like a far less watery Ophelia from the John Everett Millais painting is Sophie Turner in a super romantic shoot for Town & CountryIn the piece there is a hint of a ‘deeper, darker’ Sansa to come – something I am anticipating – as well as a discussion regarding how passive Sansa has been in the past in comparison to other female characters “At first I thought it was her age, but then I watched Arya becoming this young warrior and it was so frustrating. I kept wanting to do a massive empowering speech or kick ass like Maisie. Then I started realizing that Sansa’s got a whole different mindset, that she’s slowly but surely getting there in her own way. It’s how she survives.” Roll on season 5 and the Game of Thrones magazine cover onslaught which Emilia Clarke dominated last year; will she get the most again?

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

30 Jan

Coats, tights, sweaters and boots aplenty this week with the Sundance Film Festival style. Plus party dresses, magazine covers and a slightly different approach to walking in the snow.

Greta GerwigAt the Mistress America premiere Greta Gerwig does the cute patterned dress, tights and ankle boots thing with aplomb.

Greta Gerwig SundanceAnd because I couldn’t choose which outfit I liked best here is a Greta Gerwig’s slightly more casual look for the Sundance portrait session with more incredible boots and an animal print top. Gerwig co-wrote Mistress America with Noah Baumbach and as Frances Ha was my favorite film of 2013 I have high hopes for this one. Kicking things off nicely in charming style.

Kathryn HahnTicking all the boxes – coat, dress, boots, tights – is Kathryn Hahn and I love Sundance fashion because we get to see a less flashy form of movie promoting style. And I love Kathryn Hahn.

Jessica WilliamsJessica Williams works the layering and an excellent pair of brown boots (pattern socks plus) in her portrait for People, Places, Things.

Mark and Jay DuplassCute brothers alert with Mark and Jay Duplass at the premiere for The Overnight (which I am looking forward to for many reasons). I have seen photos of Mark Duplass from this Sundance wearing a Henley in three different colors and it is a signature piece I am all for. They aren’t just for the guys on the CW.

Cobie SmuldersThis Coach sweater caught my eye back when I wrote a Robyn sweater wish list (pausing to take a moment to wonder once again where Robyn has gone) and now a Robin of a different spelling and show is wearing it. Cobie Smulders looks casual cool at her portrait session for Unexpected.

Keri Russell heelsThis might not be the best kind of footwear for the weather, but snow or not I would find it a challenge to walk in any stilettos. Luckily, Keri Russell is much more coordinated in this department as she heads to the Today Show and this is a super stylish (if not a little chilly) outfit. Very into the coat draped over the shoulders look and the color of this outerwear. Also eyeing up the divine floral Victoria Beckham skirt.

Maisie Williams EW partyThis week Maisie Williams championed dresses with pockets (which are my favorite kind of dresses) and at the Entertainment Weekly pre-SAG bash she wore another very cute pocketed ensemble in Reem Juan.

IMG_1224Bust is on a roll with putting ladies we love on the cover (and this is one reason why I am a subscriber) and now Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are in the spotlight. The editorial has a Thelma & Louise theme and if you were wondering then yes I am still laughing about this week’s episode.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Jan

The onslaught of award shows has slowed down and with TCA coming to a close this is a slightly quieter week. Fear not as there are still some awards to be given out before the SAGs/Oscars – the SAG Awards are this Sunday – and various promotional events too. Plus the return of a character look of the week.

Keri Russell and Matthew RhysStarting with one final TCA panel and I am thrilled The Americans is back for season 3 next week (January 28). I am also happy to see Keri Russell ditching her signature black/white choices and embracing some color and pattern in an olive-green Balenciaga leather skirt with a Saint Laurent leopard print shirt. This pairing particularly with the bow element sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it looks fantastic and Russell continues her style reign. Polka dot points for Matthew Rhys thanks to his tie which brightens up the grey.

Joanne FroggattThe British Consulate in LA hosted an afternoon tea to celebrate Wolf Hall this week – what better way to celebrate something concerning British royalty than with a very British sounding event – and Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt is doing the flirty summer dress thing in Issa. I hope the ground isn’t too soft as I’m picturing those gold Giuseppe Zanotti sandals sinking into the grass.

Emma WillisAt the National Television Awards presenter Emma Willis embraced her fondness for yellow Roksanda Ilincic in another incredible outfit. Pairing a crop top with a skirt this floaty adds an edginess to this look and ensures Willis stands out in the style stakes.

Maisie Williams NTAMaisie Williams embraces the menswear trend at the National Television Awards in a fantastic Diesel Gold suit and this is a fun play on the lady tux. The jacket chain and white top with black neckband are the kind of things it helps to be 17 to wear and Maisie Williams continues to have fun with her outfit choices at events like this. Bonus red lipstick points are awarded of course.

Sleepy HollowAs I mentioned in the intro this is the return of a character look of the week with Ichabod Crane on Sleepy Hollow going for a slightly dressier approach as it is date night, which turns into painting horrorshow. At least he didn’t get too much blood on his high stand collar; hopefully it will come out in the wash. Plus he also got to air his grievance about modern dress “How can one be both business and casual?” Abbie’s sticking to her standard all dark attire and I’m forever thrilled she gets to wear boots like these ones rather than running in heels.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Jan

It has been a red carpet heavy week (Golden Globes and Elle’s Women in Television) and we’ve got more fancy frocks on display at the Golden Globes after parties and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Plus the TCA winter press tour continues and we’ve got some fun shots featuring the casts of Mad Men and Community.

Diane KrugerDiane Kruger switched out of her silver slinky gown at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes post-party; the shorter floral Giamba black and white dress is all the better to dance in. Joshua Jackson still looks just as handsome in the same tux he was wearing at the awards show.

Judith LightJudith Light! Also at the same post Globes party and fabulous as ever in a color that joins the ranks of the many stunning bold hues on display that night.

Mad Men TCAMoving onto the TCA press tour as the Mad Men cast talk about the final half of the final season (*sob*) and this photo of Elisabeth Moss and Vincent Kartheiser has me shipping Pete and Peggy. That should not be a thing. Kartheiser’s beard is looking mighty fine as are Moss’ red pumps.

January Jones TCAMore from the Mad Men panel and because a super smiley Betty Draper is a rarity here is a delightful shot of January Jones. She also happens to be adding to my current leather jacket obsessionMad Men returns for the last time on April 5 with the appropriately titled “The End of an Era.”

Gillian Jacobs TCAMore TCA and Gillian Jacobs in a patterned Tanya Taylor delight from the SS15 collection. I would also not say no to Joel McHale’s super cute dragon sweatshirt.

Emily BluntRed dresses have dominated the awards circuit this week and Emily Blunt’s scarlet Pucci frock is a beautiful addition to the trend. At the Critic’s Choice awards Blunt won for Edge of Tomorrow which was my favorite big blockbuster of 2014 and her speech – at the bottom of the page – with bonus John Krasinski cameo encapsulates why.

Jenny SlateAnother lady and performance I am in awe of is Jenny Slate in Obvious Child so I am so happy to see her get recognized for this role while looking fantastic in Miu Miu. Slate gives an empowering speech to watch and feel good about.
