Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

3 Feb

Another award show this week and that means more behind the scenes action from getting ready to after the after parties. Plus Grease: Live live, X-Files props, Empire sleep wars and some high levels of cute in our Insta round-up.

Sophie Turner is all of us in this situation at the SAG Awards.

Standard reaction to a picture of this pair is one that involves experiencing a lot of feelings.

Marisa Tomei was one of our best dressed at the SAGs and her pre-show ritual looks like a whole lot of fun.

Getting stuck in awards traffic doesn’t seem so bad when Pedro Pascal and Sarah Paulson are around.

Oh, hello.

From the stage Laverne Cox gives us a view from the other side of the amazing OITNB winning cast.

And OITNB’s Emma Myles shows what the end of a SAG winning night looks like.

Kether Donohue crushed it in Grease: Live as Jan and I got a whole lot of IRL bestie feels from this post. Plus I am coveting Aya Cash’s outfit hard.

From the actual opening of the show (which was a feat of technical brilliance) and Vanessa Hudgens deserves all the kudos she is getting for her incredible performance. Great lipstick too.

Support for Grease: Live across the networks and a crossover I now want to see.

A slightly different shot of Jenna Dewan-Tatum on her way to the Hail, Caesar! premiere and the classic ‘lying down to avoid creases’ situation.

Last night’s episode of New Girl was directed by none other than Nick Miller himself; Jake Johnson and Max Greenfield posted a shot that captures him in all his glory.

The Empire sleep wars continue.

This one ends a little more violently.

Adorable overload.

JDM smolder, Will Patton, bagels and a dog make for a good Good Wife set day.

This brow contest is too close to call.

This week’s episode of The X-Files set my giddy levels to new highs and being a huge fan of Kumail Nanjiani podcast, The X Files Files it was so great to see him in this super fun episode. This is the file Nanjiani was given and Gillian Anderson’s reaction to this gift is hilarious.

Alicia Florrick’s Funk and Friendships on The Good Wife: How One Can Stop the Other and Save the Season

1 Feb

The reason why I haven’t written about the last couple of episodes of The Good Wife is in part to do with the award shows which have aired against it and the subsequent red carpet posts which have followed. The other part is because this season has been such a bizarrely paced and plotted mess that it has felt like I have been repeating myself on a weekly basis as Alicia grapples with her firm and the election. Thankfully Peter’s bid for president has been put to bed as he crashed and burned in Iowa; this went on for far too long and I think the writers think we care much more about election storylines than we do (see also Alicia’s bid for SA last season).

The Good Wife is about the education of Alicia Florrick and season 7 has been about an unmoored Alicia. In season 1 Alicia was entering a world she had been absent from for a substantial amount of time with her husband’s discretions hanging over her. Cut to the present and she has her own election scandal to add to this list and she’s out on her own again floundering. This is no longer to do with lack of experience and her stubbornness is standing in the way of her going back to the firm that kickstarted her legal career.

The Good Wife 7.13 AliciaThere are two episodes “Judged” draws from in terms of Alicia’s journey and they happen to come from The Good Wife’s best season with “The Last Call” and “All Tapped Out.” Alicia wants to know exactly what Will’s deleted voicemail said and Eli provides the answer remembering certain parts exactly while getting the general gist of the rest – Will had loved her since Georgetown – and this clarity is what was missing from Will’s final voicemail that he left just before he was killed. Alicia will never know exactly why he was calling that morning and plenty of scenarios played in her mind, including one which sounded a whole lot like the message he sent years before.

There is of course the notion of the road not traveled or fig tree element with finding out something this vital years after the fact, particularly when the other person is no longer around. The ‘what ifs’ are endless and after moving on from this idea of her grand romance with Will everything is brought to the surface and it has sent Alicia spiraling. What Alicia does is push people away when there is a whiff of betrayal and her list of meaningful relationships has decreased throughout the seasons. Kalinda was first to go after the Peter reveal and this friendship never recovered (off screen and green screen shenanigans did not help either), things have always been pretty patchy with Diane no matter how much I long for them to be martini drinking buddies, Cary has been both confidant and rival, there was flirtation with Finn, but he was too close to what happened to Will (and Matthew Goode left for Lady Mary) and Eli is the most recent person to feel her wrath and cold shoulder.

Basically Alicia has always needed more friends (her brother does not count) and for every potential there has been a reason – sometimes work, sometimes romantic – that these haven’t panned out. Also guest stars can only hang around for a finite amount of time. Enter Lucca Quinn and Cush Jumbo has been this season’s shining star. Okay, her character is underwritten and everything we do know about her is pretty surface level and yet Cush Jumbo is selling it and making Lucca vital. And not just for fabulous outfit reasons. *Cue screenshots from this episode*
The Good Wife 7.13 LuccaThe Good Wife 7.13 Lucca QuinnThe Good Wife 7.13 Alicia and LuccaLucca is the one who is putting up with all of Alicia’s shit; her terrible moods and refusal to consider the Lockhart, Agos offer from the previous episode. After pulling a lot of concerned faces and a drink with Jason (because why not) Lucca calls Alicia on her DGAF attitude asking “Seriously, are you gonna hate the whole world right now?” Instead of giving Lucca the same throwing plates treatment she gave Eli or simply telling her that she is fine, Alicia lays it all out and I mean all of it. Lucca doesn’t know the Will story so Alicia gives the super abridged version – “I was in love. He died” – and then everything else comes pouring out. The message she didn’t get, how she hates everything, her increased drinking habits and out of nowhere her not too positive feelings about her kids. Now come on Alicia, Zach I get but Grace has been nothing but amazing this season.

This is the same Alicia we got a glimpse of after Will died; the person who stayed in her sweats and did pull the covers over her head. But she got fired up and went back to work after initially wondering whether she had made the right choices with her life.

Those same questions plague her once again and this time she has someone to tell her that she is needed. Not Peter wanting her to snap out of it so she can attend a function, but a true partner and friend. This is the relationship I have been waiting to see Alicia have ever since the very bad Kalinda break up and it has been a bumpy road getting to this point. Both Julianna Margulies and Cush Jumbo crush this scene and me in the process and I just hope this is a sign that this season is headed in a stronger direction.

Alicia is now in a position financially and legally where Lockhart, Agos is the best option and if this means Diane gets to come play rather than being out on some random case then I am so here for it.

An accurate representation of my reaction to the B plot this week. #SaveDianeThe Good Wife 7.13 DianePart of the problem this year is how fractured everything has been, which I guess has been the point in having Alicia out on her own but it doesn’t make for the best structure or strong storytelling overall. Team Everyone at Lockhart, Agos.

Forgiveness doesn’t come easily to Alicia (just ask Kalinda) and last week she told Marissa there was no way she could forgive Eli. Luckily for Eli he comes to say his piece after Alicia has had her breakdown and elevator smooch (finally!) and he tells her that he didn’t prevent Alicia getting together with Will; it happened anyway. Fate is not something they can control and deleting the voicemail didn’t have an impact on what eventually happened to Will. All very logical and Alan Cumming nails the emotion when he tells her that he never apologizes or confesses to anyone. And with that Alicia gives him the thing he came for, but probably didn’t expect.

This is very much a step in the right direction for Alicia and The Good Wife getting her out of her apartment and back to her former workplace and hopefully this last season for the Kings (and maybe Julianna Margulies) will end on a triumphant note. The first step has happened, the rest needs to follow.

Best of the 2016 SAG Awards Red Carpet Part 2

31 Jan

We’re back with more SAG Awards style highs including menswear, the Orange is the New Black cast and even more bold color.

For part 1 head here.

Idris ElbaThe man of the hour and double SAG Award winner Idris Elba (in both TV and movie categories) looking cool as fuck backstage with his two trophies.Jacob Tremblay9 year-old Jacob Tremblay is a tuxedo wearing expert by now and this three piece is another hit to add to every other one he worn so far. The adorable factor also remains strong.Rami MalekRami Malek is another repeat customer to these ‘best of’ awards posts and he ditches Dior for double-breasted Ovadia & Sons. Terrific pocket square pattern detail too. Stylist Ilaria Urbinati continues to do stellar work.Laverne CoxLaverne Cox goes full Grecian in a wine color Prabal Gurung and this side shot gives an excellent view of the dramatic caped element (always a fave).Uzo AdubaThe color looks great on Uzo Aduba – winning again for Best Comedy Actress – and I am always in the bag for pleats so this Zac Posen gown definitely does it for me.OITNBI love everything about this group shot of the Orange is the New Black cast on stage together after winning Best Comedy.Ellie KemperOne of the standout pattern gowns comes courtesy of Ellie Kemper in Peter Pilotto. Once again I do think this would benefit from a bold red lip.Claire Danes and Hugh DancyI will never get bored of these two at these things even if I do miss Hugh Dancy’s Will Graham curls. The block blue Stella McCartney gown is a little flattening, but the color is great on Claire Danes. Gonna change the record and suggest a hot pink lip to set the look off.Anna FarisA different play on red for Anna Faris in Naeem Khan looking super hot with a contrasting demure neckline and high leg slit.

Best of the 2016 SAG Awards Red Carpet Part 1

31 Jan

Another weekend, another awards red carpet. The SAGs are always a fun one because there is just as much glam, but as with the Critics’ Choice it seems like people are able to relax and mix it up a little. Especially those who have been part of this process for what feels like half a year now.

Plenty of winning looks to scroll through and for part 2 check head here.

Alicia VikanderEverything about this Louis Vuitton geometric gown is a sequin dream and this might be the best Alicia Vikander has looked all awards season (and she has looked pretty damn good). Rachel McAdamsThis red carpet cycle has also been very good to Rachel McAdams both sartorially and professionally with Spotlight continuing its winning streak (finally seeing it this afternoon). Beaded floral Elie Saab Haute Couture serves up so much drama that I’m willing to drop my usual “this needs a red lipstick” sentiment.Kiernan ShipkaFor Mad Men’s finale hurrah – shakes fist at Downton Abby for winning – Kiernan Shipka continues to show that she isn’t just one of the best dressed teens, but one of the best dressed in a beautiful Erdem gown. Marisa TomeiMarisa Tomei is the picture of cool elegance in a green beaded long sleeve – hitting two trends of this red carpet – in Zuhair Murad. Queen LatifahA sparkly long sleeve delight for 2016 SAG winner Queen Latifah in a killer Michael Costello gown.Maisie WilliamsThe Game of Thrones cast brought it big to the SAGs with Maisie Williams showing once again that she makes some very interesting choices. This time ditching Mexican wrestlers and 90s chokers for a bold blue textured tea length Ermanno Scervino frock. I bet it has pockets.

Sophie TurnerOnscreen sister and IRL BFF Sophie Turner going a little Scarlett O’Hara in Caroline Herrera and it’s really working for her. Maybe needs a dramatic lip color to go with the high drama of the gown.

Emilia ClarkePretty in pink for Emilia Clarke getting the bold color memo in Dior Haute Couture. A dress which JLaw is probably looking at and wondering why she hasn’t been offered it.

Sarah Paulson and Pedro PascalOh Pedro Pacal, I do miss you and your fun flamboyance on Game of Thrones. I’m on the fence with Sarah Paulson’s Armani Privé dress and I’m wondering how many Koosh balls were sacrificed to make it.

Michiel HuismanYou’re welcome.

Rooney and Kate MaraRooney and Kate Mara (neither sure of how to pronounce their surname if their chat on E! is anything to go by) both in Valentino, with Rooney very much leaning into her usual style. And it’s fine because it totally works.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 Jan

Continuing our Sundance fashion love-in with more knitwear, boots and coat treats for you to scroll through. Plus awards season keeps on keeping on, the American Crime Story red carpet delivers and another fantastic magazine cover has been unveiled. Jenna MaloneJena Malone is slaying at the Lovesong premiere in matching black and white checks in an outfit that looks super chic and cozy at the same time. Topping things off with killer red lips and boots.Maya RudolphGoing slightly more casual with checks is Maya Rudolph at the Mr Pig premiere also earning those all important red lipstick points. Sundance continues to be my fave for all things that I might actually have in my wardrobe. Elisabeth MossSparkly jumper dress, black tights and boots for Elisabeth Moss at the premiere for The Free World is the glitzy form of red carpet attire here; count me all in.Elisabeth Moss SundanceThis is just the best combination of all the things I love from Elisabeth Moss out and about at Sundance. My only concern is the lack of gloves. This calls for a good pair of fingerless chunky knits or some Carol inspired leather ones.Tegan and SaraMore Sundance red carpet excellence from Tegan and Sara with hints of #LadySuitWatch2016 on display at The Intervention premiere. Tegan’s grey boots are high on my covet list.Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuvallAll the 90s teen movie feelings are being felt as a result of The Intervention red carpet. Also boosted by Natasha Lyonne’s sweater looking like a black version of the dog on the “Odelay” cover.America FerreraPolka dots pretty (plus pockets!) for America Ferrera at the Producers Guild Awards and this Alexia Maria dress is ticking all our boxes. Ferrera has been a regular on TV Ate My Wardrobe over this busy red carpet season and she recently pointed out she is currently living in a world of clothing extremes.Anne HathawayFirst of all let’s ditch any kind of headlines that refer to a baby bump as if it is an accessory that can be removed at will (see every DM headline ever – i.e. “[insert pregnant celeb] takes baby bump to x”). Secondly the whole “unveiling their baby bump” nonsense can also go. So here is Anne Hathaway wearing a very cute Marc Jacobs dress and yes she looks radiant, but she always tends to pregnancy or not. *end of rant*Blackish kidsThe kids from Black-ish continue their style domination at the NAACP Awards Nominees’ Luncheon this week. And I still really need to get caught up on this show.Aya CashAya Cash was early to #LadySuitWatch2016 and she is keeping a solid jacket game in this gold lame number on the red carpet for The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story (a show that is very high on my most anticipated list). As someone who isn’t in the cast this is ideal attire as it is super cool without being too showy.Angel ParkerAngel Parker is playing attorney Shawn Chapman – part of OJ’s Dream Team – and she’s paired a bold red dress with an excellent array of accessories from silver pumps to a mirrored clutch (which looks a lot like this Viola Davis one). Also those all important red lipstick points.Sarah PaulsonSarah Paulson has been killing it on the red carpet of late and this is another triumph (even if as Samantha Powell mentions this Stella McCartney dress was everywhere in 2012). Such a good color.Amanda PeetAmanda Peet’s look wouldn’t be out of place in the top half of this post and as with Aya Cash this is the ideal kind of outfit for someone who is not in the project. Sweater, lipstick and casually slung coat over the shoulder yeses all around.Jussie SmollettOne of my favorite magazine covers of recent years was from Out and this Jussie Smollet shot is another case of letting a strong image do all the talking. In the interview he lays it all out including this:

“God, I’ve never had to talk about this, so I’m trying to find the words. If I had to label myself, I would label myself as a gay man. With that said, I believe that love is the only thing that matters, and I would hope that anybody would leave themselves open — not to gender, but to love. I would hope that people would not close themselves off from what could be if, lo and behold, you meet somebody that just sweeps you off your feet, and you just can’t do anything about it. If we truly believe that we are born this way, then why do we try to stifle the way we were born? If I fall in love down the road with a woman, I’m going to love that woman.”

It is worth checking out the full interview here and there are also more dreamy pictures from the editorial waiting.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

27 Jan

My Name is Jonas” has been stuck in my head all week and there is a very obvious reason for this as social media has been awash with a blizzard by a certain name. So yes, plenty of snow pics from this edition of Behind the Insta-Scenes. Plus Sundance, red lipstick (insert emoji here), guests stars, that touted Friends reunion and more.

Snow plus dogs equals all the adorable especially when the dog is also dressed for the occasion. Cush Jumbo’s fur hood/gloves/big scarf continues the theme of all things winter wear this week on TV Ate My Wardrobe.

Russell Tovey’s dog Rocky has snow shoes and I can’t even with how cute this is. Rocky does not seem thrilled by this weather.

Diane Kruger attempts a potentially perilous jump in the air snow pic and if I attempted this the likelihood of sticking the landing would be slim. Excellent coats and mittens choice (wouldn’t expect anything less). What we really want to know is who took the photo?

Enjoying the snow also in style is Joshua Jackson. Same question – who took the pic? (This one looks like it could be a selfie)

Not often you get to stand in the middle of a New York road like this. Got to take these opportunities where you can.

Drew Barrymore also has the same idea and everyone is killing it with their coat game.

As is Mark Ruffalo.

Yep there really was a lot of snow as this video from Justin Theroux shows.

It’s not all outdoor adventures for Justin Theroux and craft day with Amy Sedaris sounds truly magical.

And back.

Popcorn selfies that also need the lipstick emoji because Jenny Slate and Zoe Kazan have picked their color well. Can it survive the movie snacks? The true test of a good product.

While we’re on the subject of amazing lip color…

We can’t not include the TV Insta photo that has been making all the headlines this week even if this isn’t a complete Friends reunion.

This is definitely too much tune. Also I wonder how often this happens to John Mulaney and Nick Kroll.

Fair.

Jane the Virgin and My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend both returned this week and to celebrate the casts had a joint viewing party.

Broad City is back in under a month (February 17!) and this just got me even more excited.

Grant Gustin knows he has no chill.

Get ready for more Rami Malek in Dior. A brand which has already served him very well.

This Scandal director has me all kinds of excited.

From TCA part 1 of a catch me if you can shot with Matthew Rhys and Noah Emmerich.

And part 2 (it looks better in grid formation on Instagram), Photographer Maarten de Boer also has a whole lot of excellent Sundance pics.

Mulder and Scully Costume Updates and Mirroring on The X-Files

26 Jan

Mulder has quickly switched out his off duty casual wear back to his FBI Agent suit attire in the second episode of the new X-Files revival – which, thankfully was a huge improvement on the first – and TV Ate My Wardrobe costume designer favorite Christopher Hargadon manages to banish the thought of all things 90s baggy in an instant.

I’m not even going to think about the logistics of Mulder and Scully getting their old office and positions back after so much time away; instead let’s focus on a few things that jumped out regarding the clothes they are wearing now they are back on their old stomping ground.

The X-Files 10.02 Mulder and Scully The X-Files 10.02 Scully and Mulder The X-files 10.02In each instance there is a color that ties Mulder and Scully together with the last shot being the most overt with Scully’s top wine color top and Mulder’s tie. In their dressing down from Skinner – just like old times! – they’ve both opted for serious and muted attire. This somber look also mirrors their shared grief when it comes to the son they gave up and we get to see both characters imagine what could have been starting with the good, quickly followed by the devastating if William had stayed in their lives.

And when we first see Mulder and Scully back on the case the blue of Mulder’s tie and Scully’s jacket combined with their matching white shirts show that despite the time they have spent apart they are very much on the same page; this is one partnership with roots that go deep. So while the tailoring is sharper and the silhouettes are more defined, they are still very much the Mulder and Scully of the past; the rich history and intimacy is evident in not only how they look at each other, but how they mirror each other. Right down to the flashlights.

At times I wish they had let these factors do all the talking because the dialogue in both these first two episodes does a lot more explaining than is necessary and feels pretty clunky in places. The chemistry between Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny has not lost any of its fire and yep those feeeeeeelings are very much in place.

In the UK Vogue January 2016 issue Gillian Anderson talks about Scully’s updated look saying “I had worked with Chris [Hargadon] on Hannibal, in which he got to express his creative genius through Hannibal’s fine tailoring. Our squarish FBI agents were perhaps not quite so fun to dress, yet it was still essential to precisely define their typical wardrobes. So Scully is still a bit homely but with a taste for fabric and color, more cotton than silk, no zips or accents, nothing too fitted, no patterns.” Pretty much the opposite of what you might see the Alicia Florrick, Diane Lockhart or Lucca Quinn wear on The Good Wife.

I was excited to see Hargadon working on The X-Files because even though there was no way Scully would wear anything like Bedelia wore; he clearly has an excellent eye for tailoring. He is also killer when it comes to making a murder suit, a skill which could come in handy on this show. The links to Hannibal in “Founder’s Mutation” came in the slightly more obscure (suicide method) to the more overt with Kacey Rohl’s (Abigail Hobbs) guest starring.

One other costuming moment that stood out comes at the end of the episode and Mulder’s vision of William being taken; the grey tee evokes plenty of memories of Mulder from the season 2 premiere “Little Green Men.”

The X-Files 10.02 Mulder Mulder Little Green MenThe 2016 version is far less sweaty and has longer sleeves, but you get the point.

Watch the WGA Awards TV Nominees Panel featuring Mr Robot, The Americans, Inside Amy Schumer and More

26 Jan

Typically all awards chatter at this time of year is geared towards film, which makes a whole lot of sense as we are deep into pre-Oscars territory. Most TV related panels tend to occur at the Emmys business end (so any time from July-September usually), but the SAG-AFTRA Foundation got some of the WGA nominees together for a discussion that covers everything from casting, influences, whether binge watching impacts their storytelling choices to interacting with material written by critics and fans online.

Mixing comedy and drama writers with a whole variety of backgrounds makes this panel even more interesting and it features Sam Esmail (Mr Robot), Joe Weisberg (The Americans), Joel Fields (The Americans), Kim Caramele (Inside Amy Schumer), Adam Rapp (Flesh & Bone) and Dan Lyons (Silicon Valley).

WGASome of these writers are also the showrunners/creators (Esmail, Weisberg and Fields) so this means their input and day to day tasks also incorporate wider aspects of production. Or if you are Sam Esmail you’re directing all 10 episodes, plus writing which is probably why his current day starts at 6 and finishes at 2 the next morning. This sounds good for writing a character like Elliot, but dude will need a long holiday by the time season 2 is over. Writers’ rooms and process varies from show to show with the Mr Robot going all in on the telling each other to “go fuck yourself” in a totally constructive manner (of course), whereas Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields will take long walks to solve any writing issues they might be having.

Kim Caramele goes into some detail about the 12 Angry Men episode of Inside Amy Schumer, which has received all the critical adulation but was met with some resistance when they pitched the idea. The idea of responding to online chat/reviews also comes into play and Esmail admits he reads everything. Joel Fields discusses this idea of how you can’t set out to do something great/original with a spy show because there is so much that has come before it, but you can set out to do something exciting which they are certainly doing on The Americans. They also talk about whether people binge watching dictates storyline and it sounds like FX are really good bosses to have.

Watch the whole thing below.

Knitwear, Boots and Coats Galore at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival

25 Jan

In a sea of red carpets at this time of year Sundance stands out because heels are replaced by boots and wool is a predominant fabric. Plus the chance of sheer ruining an ensemble is dramatically reduced. Award season indulges in wish fulfillment aspects of fashion and the fancy pants levels are high; while I love the decadent and intricate details of gowns galore, there is something rather wonderful about the casual cool at the Sundance Film Festival.

What this boils down to is a combination of a several things including a love of all things winter wear – yes I have snow FOMO right now – with a dash of ‘stars they’re just like us’ and the kind of movies that are being showcased. Considering how many different knitted I am wearing right now (including leggings and long bootie socks) combined with how many sweater posts we have produced on TV Ate My Wardrobe it will come as no big surprise that I am in style heaven right now.

Aubrey Plaza and Jenny SlateApril Ludgate was an ultimate sweater queen and there was no doubt that Aubrey Plaza would not disappear from these pages when Parks and Recreation ended. At the Joshy premiere Plaza goes for a cozy ribbed sweater delight paired with skinny jeans, black boots and the always wonderful Jenny Slate. Also killing it with her boots choice, pleated skirt and sweater tee.

Amandla StenbergCeleb style lounges pretty much sound like the best thing especially when warm coats and boots are up for grabs so Sundance has this perk in the bag too. At Kari Feinstein’s Style Lounge Amandla Stenberg gives a good style lesson in long dress chunky knits; performing the double of super cozy and funky all at once.

Alison Brie SundanceAlso at the Kari Feinstein Style Lounge Alison Brie shows off fur hooded and toggle coat excellence demonstrating exactly why this is the ideal place for a freebie haul.

Chloe Sevigny and Natasha LyonneGetting whiffs of Grey Gardens and now picturing Chloë Sevigny and Natasha Lyonne as Big and Little Edie as they attend Lena Dunham and Planned Parenthood’s ‘Sex, Politics & Film’ cocktail reception. I mean this as a huge compliment. Sweater heaven continues.

Allison Janney and Sian HederWhere else would you see Allison Janney in green leather pants?! Extra points for the chunky roll neck sweater at the Tallulah premiere. Tallulah writer/director Sian Heder is pretty much wearing my platonic ideal of a casual outfit – boots/tights/striped dress – and I am very much looking forward to seeing this film.

Brianna HildebrandBrianna Hildebrand covers all the coat and patterned shirt bases at the First Girl I Loved premiere. Jeans are once again the pants of choice paired with – you guessed it – black boots.

To avoid this post being an endless scrolling exercise we’ve put the rest of our favorite Sundance looks in the gallery below. Just click on the image for a better look and so many more sweater, outerwear, boots and winter casual attire offerings.

For more Sundance be sure to check back for “Out of the Box: Look of the Week” on Friday and here are some highlights from last year including THAT Coach sweater I am still coveting.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

22 Jan

We are deep in awards season, TCA has just finished and I’d somehow blanked on just how much happens at the start of the year – Sundance kicked off yesterday and Fashion Month is fast approaching. Critics’ Choice Awards and the Elle Women in TV event gave plenty of style treats, but don’t worry as there are lots of outfit delights below. Plus more early contenders for favorite 2016 magazine covers.

Holly TaylorHolly Taylor’s alphabet Nicole Miller NYC mini dress is ideal for the teen star and she’s even making me not hate peep toe booties for maybe the first time ever. A TCA miracle. New Americans artwork and an actual premiere date (March 16) have somehow made anticipation levels even higher. Now if only Taylor’s spy dog suggestion could get written into the show.

Annet MahendruTCA panels don’t come with a dress code and you can go from something on the funkier end such as Holly Taylor’s dress to what I would call fancy office wear with Annet Mahendru nailing the latter. Also killing it in the lipstick stakes.

Natalie MoralesIn combining two of my favorite things – sparkles and pleats – Natalie Morales makes me not hate the cropped element. This week is a weird, but this outfit is great.

Kether DonohueKether Donohue is on Grease: Live duty at the Fox TCA party and I love that she has gone full 50s on her outfit. The silhouette and bold floral pattern look really great on her. The only thing I would add is (you guessed it) red lipstick.

Aya Cash and Chris GeereSpeaking of lip color and Donohue’s You’re the Worst co-star Aya Cash nailed her TCA panel choice and I am always in the bag for Breton stripes. Special shout out to creator Stephen Falk for the polka dot socks which just make it into the shot.

Maisie WilliamsI might be coming down with something because I’m finding Maisie Williams’ floral choker to be rather charming rather than making me break out in teen flashback fashion nightmare sweats – I had some A+ terrible chokers because 90s – and it works with her amazing Mexican wrestler Markus Lupfer dress (which she modeled oh so well on Instagram).

Like Holly Taylor, Maisie Williams is a teen that dresses like a teen and this pleases me immensely. And she won Young Performer of the Year at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards and this reminds me that I still need to watch The Falling.

Aidan TurnerAlso here is Aidan Turner at the National Television Awards reminding me why I should be watching Poldark. Nice knitted tie to go with that smolder face.

IMG_2730Bust continues its run of interesting and fabulous cover stars with our favorite Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams. Everything about this from the styling, makeup and colors used makes Williams standout including pairing a bold lipstick with a bold lip hair clip (that I very much would like it my life).

The interview is where the really good stuff is at and Williams discusses everything from feminism, her upbringing, Angry Black Woman stereotypes, The Daily Show and mental health. It is a very interesting read that goes much deeper than your average magazine profile and this issue of Bust is available on both digital and actual newsstands.

Brie LarsonVery much in the can for everything Brie Larson and after seeing Room this week I would be thrilled to see her win the Oscar. The conversation around this year’s Academy Awards is more about who hasn’t been nominated and after last year’s disappointing selection of all white acting nominees (seriously how did David Oyelowo not get nominated for Selma?) for it to happen two years in a row is disheartening/anger inducing – I also saw Creed this week and Michael B. Jordan’s performance is definitely Oscar worthy. Larson herself points to this discussion when she posted this cover on her Instagram and the voting body is not going to be able ignore the dissatisfaction when it is all anyone wants to talk about.

As far as the cover goes, it is simple and striking but don’t make bodies and their popper crotches a thing again please. The interview is engaging and Larson comes across really well. The interviewer does not when she lists the things Larson did not want to go into detail about and it just feels like a bit of dick move to bring it up in the way she does. I’m looking forward to seeing everything Larson does next and I really don’t care what she ate during this chat.
