Best of the 2017 Golden Globes: Black, White, Dudes in Suits and Print

9 Jan

Our final post in the scroll heavy day after the Golden Globes red carpet highlights rundown. There are a lot of really amazing looks and here you will find the best black and white dresses, some suit treats and a bit of bold pattern. For more from our Golden Globe coverage head here and here.issa-raeIssa Rae looks incredible in a long sleeve custom Christian Siriano; this is how you do white to an awards show without coming across bridal. janelle-monaeMullet dresses tend to be an instant no for me, but not in the case of Janelle Monáe who is working her signature black and white palette with aplomb in custom Armani Privé. Texture and material mixing never looked better.rachel-bloomGood news for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend fans as a season renewal was announced yesterday prior to the Golden Globes and nominee Rachel Bloom does black with a floral twist in another custom Christian Siriano.

Also hands down (boom) Bloom has the best nail art of the night.zazie-beetzAtlanta won big much to my delight and Zazie Beetz manages to look both super modern and classic in a two-tone Delphine Manivet black gown.jldJulia Louis-Dreyfus is very much an awards staple and she’s got the whole gown thing down; this time going for a simple but striking Georges Chakra black and white number.donald-gloverThe man of the hour and Donald Glover won both Best Actor in a Comedy and his show Atlanta won the big prize too. Glover was the standout guy on the red carpet (h/t our guy stylist fave Ilaria Urbinati) in brown velvet Gucci. This is ’70s inspiration at its best.riz-ahmedAnd now for a classic tux from Riz Ahmed in Dolce and Gabbana.laura-dernThere weren’t a lot of standout prints at the Globes this year, but Laura Dern left her mark in floral Burberry.keri-russell-and-matthew-rhysYou don’t often get leopard print during award season and yet Keri Russell is here to show how to incorporate this style by going a bit Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks (TUSK) in her choice of J. Mendel. The choker is obviously an issue for me because chokers, but I love their whole vibe that they bring to the red carpet. See also the reason I have Mouse Rat stuck in my head.

Best of the 2017 Golden Globe Awards: Sequins and all that Shines

9 Jan

The Golden Globes red carpet highlights started with a few of my favorite things – ladysuits, yellow, capes, IRL besties – and now for a trend that is also on this list and dominated the night; sequins, sparkles and all things metallic.ruth-negga-ggRuth Negga looks like she has been dipped in liquid Louis Vuitton gold and has come to save us from it all.emma-stoneWhen describing this Valentino dress Golden Globe winner Emma Stone mentioned that it is pink and has stars on it. Two very correct observations and a dream of a gown. kristen-bellSequins, sequins, sequins in all colors and styles with Kristen Bell giving great drama (and sternum) in black Jenny Packham.amy-adamsAmy Adams looks like she might be ready to go into a very stylish battle in a strapless Tom Ford. So many Cersei feelings (if Cersei ever chose to switch to sequins).claire-foyI don’t quite love this Claire Foy Erdem gown as much as I love her pre-party look, but is super pretty and I’m not even mad she beat Keri Russell. Well not a whole lot mad as I think she’s great in The Crown.regina-kingRegina King is a sparkling dream in Romona Keveza and this strapless dress might be one the best things she has worn on the red carpet.naomie-harrisNaomie Harris looks like she has come from the future to team up with Ruth Negga in a futuristic looking Armani Privé gown.priyanka-chopraFrom silver to gold and Priyanka Chopra never fails to bring it; the Golden Globes is no exception and this Ralph Lauren gown is a stunner.sarah-paulson-and-amanda-peetMore IRL BFF goals with Sarah Paulson shining in Marc Jacobs gold as she picked up yet another well deserved award for her incredible Marcia Clark performance.

Amanda Peet also looks fabulous here and I’m still sad Togetherness is no more. And that my DVD of Igby Goes Down is missing.felicity-huffmannNow for something different and Felicity Huffman’s white and gold George Chakra is a fabulous take on formal jumpsuits.gina-rodriguezA getting ready shot of Gina Rodriguez from Instagram had Twitter all a fluster for good reason:

And this Naeem Khan gown looks perfect for twirling and shimmying in at the after parties.thandie-newtonSometimes sequins are here to add a touch of drama and in the case of Thandie Newton they look like flames at the bottom of her Monse gown.sterling-k-brown

Sterling K. Brown didn’t win much to my surprise/sadness, but he looks cool as fuck here and his wife Ryan Michelle Bathe is stunning in David Meister.

Sterling K. Brown shared this pre-Globes stunner of photo on Instagram and I am so happy we get to see these getting ready shots. trace-lysetteTrace Lysette is giving me so many art deco vibes in this beautiful Charbel Zoe gown; ready to party with F. Scott Fitzgerald. judith-lightQueen Judith Light, always.tracee-ellis-ross-and-anna-chlumskyThis photo is pure magic and the perfect way to end this post.

Best of the 2017 Golden Globes: Ladysuits, Best Besties, Capes and Color

9 Jan

Welcome to the TV Ate My Wardrobe coverage of the Golden Globes red carpet; there will be three posts covering the best looks of the night in which a whole lot of my favorite trends took center stage.

Let’s get to it!erwRegular (and probably not so regular) readers will know how much I love a ladysuit and when ladysuit queen Evan Rachel Wood hit the red carpet in custom Altuzarra my jaw dropped. Wood is serving up so much Marlene Dietrich perfection and this is what she said about the tux choice:

“I’ve been to the Globes six times. I’ve worn a dress every time. And I love dresses, I’m not trying to protest dress. But I want to make sure that young girls and women know they aren’t a requirement and that you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. To just be yourself because your worth is more than that.”kathryn-hahnAlso going for a ladysuit is Kathryn Hahn and if I could just put a flames emoji here then I would because this is smoking hot. mandy-mooreFrom one of my favorite red carpet trends to another and Mandy Moore’s going full caped and plunging drama in Naeem Khan.viola-davisThis post could pretty much be an updated rendition of “My Favorite Things” and Viola Davis once again crushed both the dress and speech (twice!) game.brie-larsonGoing classic crimson siren in Rodarte and last year’s Best Actress winner Brie Larson also has the red lipstick of my dreams.caitriona-balfeNow for something different and Caitriona Balfe once again shows that she looks stunning in every kind of frock including this difficult to pull off navy and orange Delpozo.busy-philipps-and-michelle-williamsAward season when Michelle Williams is nominated gives us a window into TV Ate My Wardrobe’s fave IRL besties and the Golden Globes/Busy Philipps’ Instagram did not disappoint.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPCRepbAQJj/?taken-by=busyphilipps&hl=en

Dress wise and I am so here for everything about Busy’s Stella McCartney florals. Less so with Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton and I would get rid of the ribbon choker (the one major ’90s fashion trend that needs to go away) and cut off the sleeves.diego-luna-and-ggbOh, hello.

Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal’s friendship is one for the ages and for the swoons.stranger-thingsStranger Things kids keep on with their dressing better than a lot of their adult counterparts aka the Jacob Tremblay award.

maisie-and-sophieThey haven’t shared the Game of Thrones screen since season 1, but Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner thankfully have all this red carpet time together so we can see just how important they are. Including adjusting Maisie’s amazing yellow Ong Oaj Pairam frock and hiding most of Sophie’s sheer nightmare.

Stay tuned for more from the Golden Globes!

Best of the Pre-Golden Globes: The AFI Awards and BAFTA Tea Party

8 Jan

Before the main event and all the fancy gowns tonight there are the pre-Golden Globes parties and other awards. Plenty of pattern, color and interesting looks from a lot of the nominees you will be seeing walk the red carpet later.claire-foyIt took me a moment to realize this is Claire Foy because I’ve got used to her Elizabeth hair and styling on The Crown in which she looks a good five years older than she does here. The weight of the crown and all that.

Love this pattern clashing with a hint of polka dot at the AFI Awards and I have a feeling she will be picking up the Golden Globe tonight. Which I will be more than happy with even if my heart lies with Keri Russell.natalia-dyerAnother fun mix of texture and print with Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer in this fun floral number. And expect a major hair changes in Stranger Things season 2 as they get on the wig train. naomie-harris-afiNaomie Harris falls into the Magical Fashion Unicorn territory (see also her outfit from the BAFTA event below) and a yellow double breasted sleeveless coat dress might be a hard look to pull off. But Harris does just that and this Phillip Lim Spring 2017 works like a charm paired with black pants. Looking forward to seeing Harris on the red carpet tonight.donald-gloverDonald Glover has the patterned shirt paired with a suit/no tie casual cool thing down and I can even get on board the no socks things with him.marhershala-aliOnce again going super suave look is Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali and the red polka dot pocket square is an excellent accessory choice.chris-pineThanks Jarett Wieselman for pointing out that Entertainment Tonight’s Instagram referred to this AFI Awards look as “No one rocks the dapper werewolf in a turtleneck aesthetic quite like Chris Pine.” There’s nothing more to add to this A+ observation and also can someone make this movie? Please and thank you. riz-ahmedI am a big fan of the suits that aren’t black/brown/navy/grey and Riz Ahmed is a dream in burgundy.emma-stoneMoving on to the BAFTA LA Tea Party and it comes as no shock that I am madly in love with Emma Stone in this very ’70s looking DVF polka dot halter dress. The long brown suede Brock Collection resort coat Stone wore on top is only adding to these very strong feelings.ruth-neggaMore floral pattern delights from one of the women crushing award season and Ruth Negga’s The Vampire’s Wife frock is another winner. Excellent shoe and lipstick color too that is somehow matchy matchy without giving me a headache.naomie-harrisMore Magical Fashion Unicorn from Naomie Harris in a dress that could threaten to be overpowering. This is an exceptional Thom Browne embroidered number showing there are many ways to do botanicals. Also bonus points for the non-boring/non-beige Christian Louboutin pumps.maisie-williamsMaisie Williams wears a very cute gingham frock by Holly Fulton and she continues to light up any red carpet.millie-bobby-brownAlso in the very cute category is Millie Bobby Brown and she continues to walk the sophisticated and age appropriate line; this time in a simple Kate Spade New York with a bow on the back.michelle-williamsMore Louis Vuitton for Michelle Williams and this pink shift dress is part of the cute section for a reason. It could boarder on too saccharine, but these fantastic gold shoes offset the sweetness. caitriona-balfeCaitriona Balfe can wear extravagant gowns from any period and also kill it in the simplest black Ferragamo number. Another one to watch tonight.amy-adamsMore on the black dress front and Amy Adams looks classic in Dolce and Gabbana. isabelle-huppertLadySuit Watch 2017 gets off to a great start with the effortlessly cool Isabelle Huppert in red.diego-lunaOh, hello. All the Diego Luna swoons.

tom-hiddlestonMore burgundy delights and Tom Hiddleston is not one to shy away from a suit with a punch; this time super stylist Ilaria Urbinati has put him in double breasted Gucci.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

6 Jan

Award season is truly here and before the Golden Globes on Sunday (and pre/after parties) we’ve got a selection of fancy looks from the various celebrations this week. So happy for this onslaught of evening wear.janelle-monae-and-mahershala-aliJanelle Monáe knows and at the Palm Springs Awards where Mahershala Ali was honored for Moonlight, Monáe points to her suavely dressed co-star. Monáe is very high up on my Golden Globes red carpet entrance most anticipated list and as ever she is crushing it; this time in Jenny Packham and another fantastic lip color/hair accessory. For Monáe skip to the end. kirsten-dunstI’ve been watching a lot of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries recently and if you were to throw a fabulous shawl and embellished hair accessory Kirsten Dunst’s sparkly beaded Ralph and Russo gown would be pure Phryne. There’s something both understated and extravagant at work here; it could maybe do with some jewelry, but I also really like the simplicity.glen-powell-palm-springsThe reason I stuck with Scream Queens for all of season 1 (I did not make it to season 2) and Glen Powell’s smile could power an electric grid. Nice tux too.michelle-williamsMoving on to the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and I think it won’t shock you to hear Michelle Williams is wearing Louis Vuitton. No Busy for a date this time, but expect to see her come Sunday when I think we will see Williams in a far flashier LV number. This LBD with a gold twist is great and all for a low-key start to 2017 as are the feet freezing gold sandals.amy-ryanAlso at the same event is Amy Ryan and I adore her as much as her choice of blue Art Deco adjacent frock, which is to say a lot.viola-davisViola Davis received her Hollywood Walk of Fame star in style this week wearing a white Christian Siriano dress and Davis is another Golden Globe nominee I am looking forward to seeing walk the red carpet this Sunday. Davis always gives great speeches; this was no different as she talked about her father – which made me misty eyed – and you can see the full video here (Davis is just after the 15 minute mark).

Giving a fantastic introduction is Meryl Streep (starting at 8 minutes) and this line really stood out “She writes paragraphs with her eyes.”janelle-monaeBook-ending this week’s “Out of the Box” with Janelle Monáe and she sure knows how to wear a whole lot of black and white while keeping things exciting. At the Variety “10 Directors to Watch” event she gets all the collar points in a Spring ’17 Lela Rose dress with another tick in the bold lipstick and hair accessory columns. The googly eyes have been switched for safety pins here and gold wire at the Palm Springs Awards. Celeb hairstylist Nikki Nelms is a genius.

The First Magazine Covers of 2017 Are Here!

4 Jan

Happy New Year, everyone! And you can tell the holiday period is over because yesterday saw a lot of publications releasing the covers of their first 2017 issues (okay some of these are technically the February issue, but whatever).

We have the annual film fest celebrating the performances of the year just before award season goes into hyperdrive – the Golden Globes are THIS Sunday – and the start of the final season of Girls countdown. Plus some bonus royals because The Crown has made me a fan apparently.adam-driver-and-viggo-wexcels at photo shoots with a vast array of talent and tends to skew a bit weird in the art direction. This year’s movie issue it is all about romance and each cover is a different pair of actors with some being a lot more awkward (looking at you Nicole) than others; this one of Adam Driver and Viggo Mortensen instantly stood out for reasons and because they are gazing directly at viewer.

Inside the issue there is more and some of the shots are more effective than others, whereas some get a lamp as a boob prop stand in (sorry Greta).

glamour-magazine-girlsIn several firsts the women of Girls get their first shared cover and Glamour produces its first all-female issue. Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive told WWD the reasons behind it came from looking at the people that made up the creative elements of previous issues and “As of the fall, only 37 percent of the photographers we were using in our own print pages were female, and 32 percent of the hairstylists…and fewer than half of the makeup artists.” So every page of this issue was created by a woman (with one exception – Michelle Obama’s makeup artist Carl Ray).

The cover is also notable because of the lack of photoshop on Lena Dunham as she has been outspoken about this in the past. The interview with the cast goes through the ups and downs of shooting Girls including who tried to quit (Jemima Kirke) in season 2. Plus you get to see which actors are closest to their characters. Those sure are some stacked platforms that even Geri Halliwell might have issues walking in.

Girls returns February 15 and you can see more from the shows on my most anticipated style list over at The Observer. This issue of Glamour is available on newsstands print and digital now.prince-harryBetween Adam Driver and Prince Harry this year is kicking off to a good forearm start.

Prince Harry appears in Town & Country this month to discuss his huge conservation project and he graces TV Ate My Wardrobe because this is a good cover and he’s my fave royal (well joint with forever fave Princess Margaret). Plus he’s dating someone from TV right now so this isn’t completely tenuous. Okay it is a little tenuous, but good on Harry for using his privileged position to do something good.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Part 2

30 Dec

Rounding off the Best of 2016 series with Part 2 of our favorite “Out of the Box” moments. Last week we dedicated the first part to the magazine covers that stood out and now it is time for style highs from red carpets, events, awards and panels.

The only rule was they had to appear as part of “Out of the Box” and we’ve got a good mix of casual, fancy and everything in-between.Evan Rachel WoodBest LadySuitWatch2016

So many fantastic Evan Rachel Wood ladysuit moments in 2016 and it was super hard to pick a winner. This red one is incredible, but the collar, lipstick and metallic pumps from back in June take the prize.Yara Shahidi

Tracee Ellis RossBest Sequins: TV Mother/Daughter Edition

Yara Shahidi is not only 2016’s best dressed teen, but an overall style icon for the year. This super sparkly sequin Tracy Reese dress that she wore to the BET Awards gives me so much joy as does Tracee Ellis Ross at PaleyFest in March.julianne-mooreBest Sequins – Awards Edition

Continuing the sequin love and we’ve got the whole year covered as this was pretty recent; Julianne Moore in Tom Ford to celebrate Tom Ford at one of the many film award season events. Alicia VikanderBest Post-Oscar Party

It is not just the Oscar that makes Alicia Vikander’s post-Oscar Louis Vuitton much better than the yellow Beauty and the Beast style gown she wore to the actual ceremony. Everything about this is incredible and just because it is black it is far from boring; so many fantastic sequins in 2016.Brie LarsonBest Pattern – Eyes

First up Jacob Tremblay is 2016’s best dressed kid and he also outdid a lot of his older male counterparts. At the pre-Oscar photocall his tie matches his onscreen mom Brie Larson’s super fun Emilia Wickstead skirt and blouse. An instant standout style moment that brings much needed whimsy. Mary Elizabeth WinsteadBest Pattern – Lips

Mary Elizabeth Winstead was not only one of the best dressed characters on TV this year, but she also brought it on the red carpet. This Victoria Beckham red lip patterned dress is very high on my covet list.Kirsten DunstBest Cannes

Serving on the jury at Cannes this year meant so many amazing Kirsten Dunst ensembles from the fancy to casual chic; it is this yellow Dior daytime perfection with an A+ red lipstick that was my favorite. Lupita Nyong'oBest Pattern Clashing

Pleats tend to make me want to twirl and Lupita Nyongo’s colorful Prada frock at the Obie Awards is giving me those feelings. It could look like a lot against the equally bold floral backdrop and yet Nyong’o is totally pulling this off.Aubrey PlazaTatiana Maslany ColbertBest Talk Show Entrance

Aubrey Plaza is a forever style icon and has featured in these end of year lists in the past. First she started my pleated leather skirt obsession and in June 2016 she arrived at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in pretty much my dream casual outfit. Tatiana Maslany on the other hand is doing the sneakers with heels in her hand thing while also arriving at The Late Show and she is another casual dress queen. caitriona-balfeBest Black and White

Everything about Caitriona Balfe’s Burberry gown is a dream at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards showing that she looks fantastic in any era. I’m excited to see what she will wear to the Golden Globes in a couple of weeks.mads-mikkelsenBest Hannibal

Mads Mikkelsen looks really great in a suit and this is the first Best of year without any Hannibal. Thankfully at the Doctor Strange premiere Mads is wearing a suit that wouldn’t look out of place on the famous cannibal he plays. matthew-rhys-and-keri-russell-operaBest Cape

Serving up so much drama at the Met Opera in September and Keri Russell has worn Stephane Rolland for three very dressy events this year – the other two being at the White House and Emmys – and this black caped number is my overall favorite. A very fancy date night with Matthew Rhys. constance-zimmer-and-shiri-applebyBest Friends

Thankfully things are a lot better IRL between Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby than their UnREAL counterparts and while season 2 was super messy/missed the mark in places, the subsequent promo tour and red carpet appearances always delivered.

This is from the Elle Women in Hollywood celebration at the end of October; they are giving off metallic dress and flaming hot jumpsuit excellence.Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Elisabeth Olsen, Michael B. JordanBest Sunglasses

As the Fug Girls like to say “Everybody looks hotter in sunglasses” and the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic helps prove this theory. Summer wardrobe delights from Elizabeth Olsen, Michael B. Jordan, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale.TCA You're the WorstBest TCA

Panel outfits are an “Out of the Box” fave as they tend to deliver on the casual cool. With Aya Cash she also delivers on great lipstick and she also let me know what brand and color (Inglot 13). I picked it up while on honeymoon and it is fantastic. Thanks, Aya!2 Dope QueensBest Crown

To my favorite podcast of the year and two women that made 2016 a whole lot better (including the time they were there for me when I traveled home on the train after my dad died in July). This fabulous shot of Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson from The New York Times puts the crown in 2 Dope Queens.Sarah Paulson and Sterling K BrownBest Look of the Week

I said this at the time and I’ll say it again, but the way Sarah Paulson is looking at Sterling K. Brown is how I would look at Sterling K. Brown. Marcia and Chris 4EVA.

Best of TV 2016: The Best Songs

29 Dec

End of year lists can focus on various things – performances, costumes, episodes, overall show – and one of my favorite things to look back at is the best use of music on TV. Song can transport us to those all important standout moments or introduce us to new music; over the last few years I have compiled playlists from TV to celebrate this. Last year I focused a single show as You’re the Worst is particularly strong in the end credit department, whereas in previous years I have done a general playlist of the year in TV music.

For 2016 I have returned to the latter format going all in with 28-tracks and you can find the full breakdown and playlist over at ColliderfleabagSongs and music from 21-shows were chosen with some getting two tracks (including the above Fleabag) because I just couldn’t chose and a variety of genres feature. There are songs to dance to, induce tears and all other kinds of emotions and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

You can find instrumental pieces from Westworld and Game of Thrones, tracks that have appeared on “Music Monday” from the melancholy to fun cover versionsMr. Robot was messy in season 2, but nailed the soundtrack once again and shows like Atlanta and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend have music ingrained into the very fabric. You will find songs from The AmericansHalt and Catch FireGirlsBlack Mirror and American Crime Story as well as a literal earworm from BrainDead. Plus many, many more.

Costuming is my first love, but soundtracks is a close second and I am so glad I got to compile such an extensive playlist and discuss the best of 2016 over at Collider. Check it out here and get your dance on.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Dec

This week’s “Out of the Box” is sponsored by BFFS, super shiny dresses, a whole lot of festive feelings and a very fun hair accessory in an all-New York event edition.

You can also check out the Best of 2016 “Out of the Box” magazine edition and there really have been a slew of fantastic covers this year. Hooray for print media.

Happy Holidays! michelle-williams-and-busy-philippsBy now if you are a regular TV Ate My Wardrobe reader you will know how strongly I feel about Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps’ friendship and that when Michelle Williams is in awards contention this means maximum time with this pair. At this event Williams confirmed what makes this relationship so special:

“I’m so in love with her. She’s proof that the love of your life does not have to be a man! That’s the love of my life right there.”

Williams tends to wear Louis Vuitton and at a screening of Manchester by the Sea in New York City hosted by Louis Vuitton she wore Michael Kors. Just kidding; it is Louis Vuitton and this is the ideal amount of sheer. Coordinating with her BFF, Philipps is also doing the all-black thing and layering it up like a smart person in this weather.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOM_Ivgj6v-/?taken-by=busyphilipps&hl=en

Bonus Instagram time! Philipps gave another gift in this friendship department (and thanks Faye for sending it my way) while adding to the evidence that the early ’00s was not a good time for fashion. It is hard to put into words just how happy Sarah Paulson in THE most sparkly pink and red Dolce & Gabbana dress makes me, but just know that every time it has appeared on my Twitter timeline (which is a lot) I have squealed with delight. This is perfect and challenges her green sparkly Prada Emmy gown for fave dress she has worn this year (and I love that dress a lot).

And see the sequins in motion as Sarah Paulson tells Seth Meyers about her fear of flying. I could stare at this dress for hours.viola-davisFrom a very pink frock to a hint of this color and Viola Davis’ Cinq dress is classic without being dull at a screening of Fences in New York with a very festive backdrop. Instant feelings of joy.janelle-monaeSpeaking of which and the Hidden Figures press tour continues with another Janelle Monáe ensemble to bring the cheer. Googly eyes as a hair accessory is something I would have never considered, but celebrity hairstylist Nikki Nelms is all over it. It is an out of the box (drink because I said the column name) approach that really works and paired with this outfit works like a charm.

The Bally Resort 2017 frock gives Swinging ’60s vibes and paired with studded Christian Louboutin pumps gives the whole thing an edge. Also black tights forever.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOP2qxQg-TV/?taken-by=janellemonae&hl=en

On Instagram Janelle Monae gives us a close up of the googly eyes, her fabulous pink lipstick and a very warm looking black and white coat, which is probably very much needed in New York right now.

Best of TV Costuming 2016: Work in Other Places

22 Dec

So 2016 has been bit of an emotional roller coaster on a large global scale and a personal one with moments of so much joy and immense sadness.

Writing wise this has been my best year yet as I finally got over my pitching fears (well, mostly) and have a weekly TV and Style column at The Observer where I have discussed numerous shows and costume moments beginning with Girls back in February. I have also contributed to Collider with several Americans essays and a TV themed gift guide (still time to buy!).

Here is a selection of my favorite pieces of work from 2016 including a personal essay, topics I have been obsessed with for a long time, discussing so many different shows from this year (with a dash of the ’90s) and I also got to interview two amazing costume designers.Outlander Season 2 2016Kicking off with the essay that was incredibly hard to write, but also gave me great comfort after my father passed away in July. I got married in September and in the lead up I knew it would be a very happy day tinged with sadness and writing about Outlander, my father and our shared heritage helped.

I don’t tend to be someone who is good with sharing my deepest feelings and personal essays are an uneasy prospect: however connecting to the work of Terry Dresbach and the Outlander team led to an outpouring of words.the americansI wrote about The Americans a lot in 2016 both here and other places. I spoke to costume designer Katie Irish at the start of the fourth season about Coach, the many coats and other costume design disguise secrets.

For Collider I went deep about Elizabeth Jennings and motherhood, why the teens on this show don’t fall into the usual annoying obstacle trap and looked at how the Cold War is making a comeback on TV (this was before other significant events).westworldOne of the most fulfilling experiences of 2016 was talking to Westworld costume designer Ane Crabtree after the season finale. Part of this is because I have been writing about Crabtree’s work since TV Ate My Wardrobe started with Masters of Sex and because of all the anecdotes and insight I got from this phone conversation.fleabagOne of the first pieces I wrote on TV Ate My Wardrobe was about lipstick on TV/film and I expanded upon this idea while discussing the Empire CoverGirl line and how powerful make-up can be.

Other key lipstick essays include two of my favorite shows of the year with how Fleabag paints over the cracks and the portrayal of women working in the tech industry in the ’80s on Halt and Catch Fire. And the time jump on Halt and Catch Fire allowed me to address my own nostalgia and one of my favorite style decades.img_4381In a similar vein, but at the end of the scale the build up to new Gilmore Girls was the perfect time to address all the fashion mishaps of the early ’00s.

BrainDead is one of my favorite shows of the year for being fun, weird, having so much flames chemistry and rethinking how to do a “previously on.” Plus it gave me so many outfit goals and I got to expand on this further heregame-of-thronesAnd now for my most viewed article, which also happens to be one of my favorite costume moments of the year when Sansa made sure Jon knew he was family by making him a very Ned fur.

Also on the subject of Game of Thrones I previewed the “Battle of the Bastards” with a ‘Who wore it better?’ competition and went all in on Cersei’s power move ensemble.

On the pieces I have wanted to write about forever track; Angela singing on Mr. Robot let me go all in on the sadness karaoke essay that has been itching to come out since Eliza sang “Chandelier” on Selfie.

The second season of Mr. Robot was messy in places, but the women delivered and it gave me plenty to write about from a costuming perspective. Oh and everyone looks hotter in sunglasses as the Fug Girls always say.felicity-and-marciaA tale of two haircuts and I am very proud of finding a very strong link between Keri Russell’s infamous Felicity haircut and Marcia Clark’s mid-trial makeover. American Crime Story’s “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” is one of my favorite episodes of TV this year and exploring the legacies of a style change was incredibly fulfilling.

I binged the first season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend the week after my dad died and it was a much needed distraction so I will forever be grateful for Rachel Bloom and Rebecca Bunch. Season 2 has also provided some very interesting talking points including portrayals of lady friendships and makeovers. Plus Rebecca’s imagination delivers on plenty of fun costume changes.

Here’s to more in 2017 and for my author pages at The Observer and Collider head here and here.

For individual costume highlights check out Best of the Rest Parts 1 and 2.
