That very busy time of year when it is not only New York Fashion Week, but the awards keep on coming and shows are returning/are deep into their filming schedule. It is good for “Behind the Insta-Scenes” as there is plenty of variety this week.
Meanwhile Grant Gustin is also moonlighting over on Supergirl; Gustin and Melissa Benoist do look very good together. I really need to catch up on Supergirl before this episode happens.
Constance Zimmer’s very on point sweater this weekend gets extra points for the Galentine’s tag (and now I’m sad I forgot to include Rachel and Quinn in this post – next year).
NYFW is all over Instagram including many runway shots and this one from The Cut’s Stella Bugbee captures the fluidity and pretty from the Altuzarra show.
For anyone who has seen the excellent John Mulaney Netflix comedy special The Comeback Kid or if you just like dogs wearing coats – this one is for you.
Oh, Paige. If only you knew the extent to which that question could be answered and while the one she gets is clearly a big, big lie the fact that there is so much more transparency coming to The Americans as a result of secrets shared is exciting and terrifying in equal measure. When The Americans returns in a month not only does Paige have her own indiscretion to reveal, but this new extended promo also shows that Philip’s Clark de-wigging was not a one off and he’s also kinda divulging what happened to Martha’s now dead colleague to Martha. Building on this earlier promo we get to see certain humdinger moments again such as the question of running/getting pulled out of their assignment, Stan shoving Philip up against a wall (which I still think is a misdirect), the realization that they are in deep plus Paige saying sorry. New bits include a mission that requires some sort of vaccination in the form of an injection, Stan talking to Paige about her parents leaving town and the FBI searching what looks like a hotel room.
The overall vibe is the net is closing in from all angles and the tension levels are continuing to rise (if that is possible). The stakes have never been higher and it doesn’t help that more people are aware of either who Philip and Elizabeth are. Basically the shit is really hitting the fan. It also doesn’t look too good if you are a bus driver or Gabriel and somehow it is also hard to imagine a happy ending for either Pastor Tim or Martha, but stranger things have happened.
And just because Philip and Elizabeth tell Paige that no one gets hurt (ha) this really is not going to stop the things they have to do all in the name of duty, their survival and protecting their family.The Jennings car and garage is a really interesting space in how it has been used to hide the human equivalent of a ticking time bomb in the pilot episode; this person could’ve really sounded the death knell of their relationship and even exposed their secret to the FBI agent who had just moved in, but it actually helped ignite the spark that has led to where they are now. This is a safe place and in the past it has also been where Elizabeth has found refuge with her not so secret habit of smoking cigarettes (joints are reserved for their bedroom).
The car also represents a getaway option, but for now it looks like they are using it as a place of comfort (see also the pilot episode and intimacy of a much more sexual nature) and somewhere they can share their fears without worrying about who might be listening.The levels of dread continue to build on a personal and global scale as the threat of nuclear action looms and the FX promotional department continues to crush it in detailing these aspects and themes of unity between Elizabeth and Philip from the key art we have already shared to this very Russian propaganda inspired poster.
In terms of promos they excel both at cutting together moments from the new episodes as well as crafting ones which focus on the overall conflict taking place:
The Diane von Furstenberg show is always high on the most anticipated list in part because of the pre-ladysuit Alana Bloom costume stylings and because Furstenberg creates plenty of pieces that can be worn by women on television from an array of eras. This RTW Fall 2016 collection has a huge 70s influence – the iconic DVF wrap dress celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014 – continuing the recent trend of delving back into my favorite style decade and running with it.
In somewhat perfect timing Vinyl started this week and it isn’t a leap when suggesting these garments are ideal for this show. Fabrics such as suede, leather, tweed and printed silk shirts aplenty make this super 1970s friendly with knee length, floor skimming and leg bearing in equal measure. So much brown, purple, sequins and pattern clashing with a mixture of boho and disco further add to the strong visual impact of the era when Diane von Furstenberg’s signature wrap dress first came onto the scene.
Here are a few of the standout pieces from this runway show that would look amazing on Olivia Wilde, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen and Juno Temple on Vinyl.
There is a slight hint of The Americans and Elizabeth Jennings, travel agent in some of the suede skirt/boots/silk shirts and the 80s didn’t become THE EIGHTIES until later in the decade (also Elizabeth is not one for fads).

New York Fashion Week is here and with it the return of Fantasy Costuming. Kate Spade New York is one collection we are always look forward to seeing because you can pretty much guarantee bold color and pattern; the new Fall 2016 Ready-to-Wear collection does not disappoint.
For Kate Spade’s last NYFW offerings we concentrated on picking outfits for characters on comedies and while this is also the theme here some drama does sneak in.Mindy Lahiri is all about the mixing of colours, prints and textures and she’s got a vast collection of plaid coats already so this cape is the perfect addition to her closet. She would also rock the shit out of this pink blouse on The Mindy Project.More for Mindy and this is probably what she imagines she would look like if she was a spy. All it needs is a pair of sunglasses and some binoculars to complete the look.This season on Elementary Joan has been embracing all things collar detail with bows and ascots aplenty, which makes this the perfect getup. Joan isn’t against wearing color especially when it comes to bold print dresses and blouses, but black and white attire is her predominant choice and I can definitely see her in leather and stripes. Probably not the swan bag though. Gina Linetti is the TV Ate My Wardrobe sweater queen and stripes are staple sweater material. While Rosa has the leather jacket thing down on Brooklyn Nine-Nine this one is better suited for Gina thanks to the sheepskin detail.Super cute office wear for Supergirl herself, Kara Danvers.
Girls returns next week and what better time to think about all things Shoshanna than now. Shosh is a fashion chameleon carefully planning her outfits to match the scenario/activity. The black turtleneck has a cool ‘take me seriously’ arty vibe, but the sunglasses and polka dot jumpsuit add a playful edge which suggests a casual date sitch (if Shosh could go on such a thing). I also think she would take a spy aesthetic from at least half of this outfit. This is for Shoshanna again and this is either a fancier date or first day at a new job ensemble. The ruffled sleeves add an edge to the prim and proper matching floral scarf and skirt.Speaking of dates I can see Jane wearing something like this when she goes on her first date with no longer her advisor Professor Chavez. It is funky without being too try hard.For when New Girl gets its titular character back from jury duty and Kate Spade New York/this dress is ultimate Jess attire. Same with those very cute rosette shoes.This is not a leap, but after seeing Aya Cash rocking a very similar look IRL I now want to see Gretchen show up in something similar on You’re the Worst. It’s not really her usual style, but could work for a fancypants event like a book launch (for Jimmy one day) or something job related.

Happy Galentine’s Day! And once again I want to take this opportunity to celebrate the many amazing lady friendships on television. Over at The A.V. ClubMolly Eichel wrote an essay about how the best love stories on TV are not romantic ones; instead it is the close friendships between women that get this title and I am inclined to agree.
Last year I offered up some dream lady hangout scenarios and I want to do something similar this year with a whole different set of besties (before you wonder where Abbi and Ilana are). Some of these friendships span decades while others are relatively new, but the one thing that is clear is these women will be there for each other whether the drama is small scale or involves saving the world.
A park bench, getting free samples of frozen yogurt, in a bar; wherever is good when it comes to Gretchen and Lindsay on You’re the Worst. This friendship was put to the test during season 2, but Lindsay has been there for Gretchen when her depression consumed her in sophomore year at college and she offers up some excellent advice “wear your stains on the outsides of your clothes, Gretch.”
(I just watched this scene again and it still crushes in every way – yes I am crying)
So whether it is giving relationship pointers advocating against becoming “sweater people,” trying not to talk about dudes or just general getting drunk and chatting shit then this is one friendship I am all in on. Jessica Jones does not let anyone penetrate her hard exterior, well there is one exception and her name is Trish Walker. Trish still has her work cut out, but she does get results that end in reciprocated hugs.Jessica came to live with Trish after the tragedy that befell her family and she then helped her adopted sister of sorts deal with her own shitty abusive situation. There’s not a lot that comes between this pair (aside from Jessica’s refusal to ask for help) and there is plenty of darkness in their lives; however some playful moments did sneak in before Kilgrave including Trish’s costume ideas for superhero Jessica (with the name Jewel to boot) and challenging douchebags in bars to bets they can never win. More of this please.Maggie and Emma have their own challenges on Playing House including raising a baby together and all the ups and downs that come with being this close to someone. Emma stayed when Maggie’s husband strayed and whether it is getting into a Kenny Loggins concert, winning the paddleboat race or just dealing with dating after having a baby they are always there for each other in a big way. The newest friendship is also maybe the one that is most needed and while Alicia Florrick featured last year she has definitely been lacking in the lady friends department since her big break up with Kalinda way back when. In the last episode Alicia broke down and blurted out years worth of resentment and instead of fleeing, Lucca embraced Alicia and shared her sad story (which I find hard to believe considering just how charming she is). Finally Alicia has someone to booze with where there are no other complications such as unrequited feelings or bitterness.An old friendship to a lot of you, but one that is very new to me and I’ve just hit the halfway point of Gilmore Girls’ first season. Rory has already had a bit of a Carrie Bradshaw BFF moment – where she made everything about her – but she’s young and she came through for Lane and her hair touching drama. So far going to different schools has not been an issue and Lane is just as likely to be hanging out at Rory’s or grabbing something to eat at Luke’s with her bestie. I am looking forward to seeing how this friendship develops over time because there is nothing quite like teen female friendships (see MSCL, Freaks and Geeks). Hopefully Gilmore Girls will also fulfill the required bathroom conversation time that all other teen shows we have covered on TV Ate My Wardrobe have excelled at.

The Oscar train keeps on keeping on with the nominee luncheon and a whole lot of excellent daytime looks to show off. Plus more award shindigs and events bring out the sartorial delights. New York Fashion Week kicked off yesterday so expect to see plenty of things related to that next week on the site. Starting with the most adorable and Jacob Tremblay continues to show the older dudes how it is done in another fantastic suit. The dash of orange on his tie pairs nicely with Brie Larson’s pink and white Emilia Wickstead ensemble and I am all for subtle not quite matching. Mixing stripes with beaded embellished eyes (that kinda look like caterpillars) makes for a super playful look.Alicia Vikander is comfortable making bold fashion choices, but she is also content with sticking to the simpler end of the scale and Vikander has done both of these things in Louis Vuitton. I’m guessing she will be wearing the brand she models for come Oscar Sunday and hopefully they can deliver another knockout.Mustang director Deniz Gamze Ergüven went for a pattern that is reminiscent of wall tiles, which doesn’t sound all that complimentary but it really is. I am also very much looking forward to seeing Mustang, which has been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.#LadySuitWatch2016 shorts and tweed edition from Saoirse Ronan. Deal me in. Also Saoirse Ronan’s profile in the fashion issue of New York Magazine this week is such a great example of bold editorial choices that really work. A very Rooney Mara choice in Giambattista Valli that is maybe more delicate romantic than goth fairy tale. Just a random observation, but strappy sandals are the shoe of choice for most of the “Out of the Box” Oscar luncheon picks this week. Opting for a dress that is half sheer over the very cute and somewhat twee (so my wheelhouse) dress Rachel McAdams wore to the Oscar nominees luncheon also surprised me, but somehow sequinned Michael Kors is the key to this non-scroll down nightmare at the DGA Awards. Mindy Kaling described her P.A.R.O.S.H. aTVfest 2016 panel outfit as “going for colorful hipster carpet” and I love both this title and the whole look. Those yellow Christian Louboutin pumps are also excellent. If the matching top and cardigan was all the shades of brown it would definitely look like the carpet in my parents’ house.Olivia Wilde is very on point with her very 70s pants and blouse ensemble while promoting Vinyl (starts this Sunday) on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week. Shockingly with my fondness of all things fashion from this decade I am in love with this look.
Broad City returns next week (Wednesday, 17 February) and we’ve got our first look at season 3 in this new promo. Plenty of returning faces including Hannibal Buress as Lincoln, Ilana’s mother played by the incredible Susie Essman (I still can’t get over how good this casting is), Kirk Steele himself, Trey (Paul W. Downs) and Ilana’s amazing roommate Jaimé (Arturo Castro).
There’s no sign of Bevers which I’m actually okay with because he only works in the smallest of doses. Cynthia Nixon is also guest starring this season in what looks like a role relating to Hillary Clinton’s appearance that was teased on Instagram a couple of months ago. Some quick observations/costume thoughts from this jam packed promo including how I also mistook the dog hoodies in American Apparel for human ones (my question was who in the hell was small enough to fit in the really small one).
Ilana puts the ear holes to good use and Chris Gethard is back as Ilana’s exasperated boss Derek. Hopefully we will be seeing more of Nicole and her memos this season too.Another wig to add to Ilana’s collection to go with her red wavy number from the season 2 finale therefore satisfying my wig kick until The Americans comes back next month.Taking tips from Diane Lockhart and going for chunky chain accessories does have its drawbacks sometimes.

To tide you over until next week for all things Abbi and Ilana then Interview Magazinehas just the thing for you. Ellen Page interviews the pair and it is clear from the outset that she is a huge fan of the show and she knows her shit about the adventures of Abbi and Ilana. The photo shoot is fun and also reminds me of the “St. Mark’s” episode.They discuss their path to comedy, Amy Poehler and sexual politics. Plus they share some interesting thoughts about the new season and how writing the show has changed over the last three years:
PAGE: “Season 3 is coming soon, thank the Lord. Is there anything that changed from the process of writing the show?
JACOBSON: This season was without a doubt the most difficult to write. When we were writing season 2, season 1 was still airing, and we really didn’t have a break between editing season 1 and writing season 2. So we were really just in it, not getting any feedback and not even getting our own perspective on the show. For season 3, we had a lot of perspective, and it was very scary and hard, and it took us a little longer to get into it and figure out what we wanted to do. But I feel like we have a better hold on the series. And for us to be writing about ourselves, because it’s not us, it’s a very difficult thing to wrap your mind around sometimes.
GLAZER: Our lives are changing, and the characters also have to change. We were more conscious than ever this season that we were writing a show. It’s a third season, and there will probably be more. And figuring out the direction we want the show to go in, how we see the series ending, has clarified things. This was the hardest season to write, existentially. I feel like we were really DTR’ing [defining the relationship] this season, and that was just existentially heavy. I feel like we got over that hump, and it will be easier now that it’s caught up in our consciousness.”
Broad City returns Wednesday, February 17 and we will be discussing the show in more detail when it does. I for one am also very excited to get some new stickers and gifs on the Broad City keyboard.
Another busy weekend with the Super Bowl and the NAACP Image Awards and we’ve got some behind the scenes action from both. Plus the usual array of set photos including Jane the Virgin, Inside Amy Schumer and The Good Wife.
A Friday Night Lights reunion at the Super Bowl on Sunday gave me plenty to cheer about. There’s also a much bigger version of this meet-up taking place at this year’s ATX Television Festival and if I didn’t have a wedding to pay for I would be there in a flash.
A shot of these three fabulous women came up on TV and I maybe full on yelled in delight (the only things to get a strong reaction like this on Sunday were Beyoncé and the big Good Wife news – this was a mix of sadness/about time).
Beyoncé slayed both during the halftime show with her new song “Formation” and when she unleashed the song/video on the world the day before. There are so many incredible photos (mostly from the dress rehearsal) on Beyoncé’s Instagram and I really love this close up shot of her backup dancers and their fishnets, leather skirts and Doc Marten ankle boots (you need a good solid heel to perform those kind of routines on grass). Jane the Virgin is on fire right now and I love what they are doing with Petra this season. Hopefully this is an indication that we will get to see some Petra/Rogelio action in the not too distant future.
Kristen Wiig and Justin Theroux are killing it on the Zoolander 2 press tourand even if I am not really bothered about the movie I am very much enjoying their involvement.
Cush Jumbo has been one of the consistently brilliant things about this (final) Good Wife season and costume designer Daniel Lawson continues to deliver on the fantastic prints. Looking forward to seeing this in one of the final nine episodes.
This is all kinds of adorable. Plus bonus grizzly beard points for Mark Duplass AND I just remembered that Togetherness is back very soon (Katie Aselton will also be recurring!).
My ‘To Read’ pile is already at a ridiculous height, but I can’t resist a good book rec. Plus Mindy’s sweater (another thing I don’t really need more of) is calling out to me.
Mulder’s quest began a long time ago with a simple question that lacked in a simple answer – who took his sister and why? That night is what led to his interest (okay obsession) with all things paranormal, ultimately leading to his partnership with Scully. In this 6-episode revival The X-Files isn’t so concerned with what happened to Samantha Mulder (‘explanations’ in the past range from cloning, a shadowy government conspiracy, aliens and a serial killer giving Mulder answers and then taking them away), but rather addressing the child that Scully and Mulder had and then gave up for adoption in order to protect him. William is the thread that runs throughout and a sadness hangs over Scully (and Mulder) in the same way Samantha did during the original series.
With William it isn’t so much what happened to him – even though Scully has plenty of those questions – as they know the reason why he is no longer in their life, but more about the decision they made and if there could have been another way. A lot of this is saturated in guilt; Mulder felt guilty for being the one not taken way back when and now Scully is consumed with this feeling that she abandoned her child.There is no way to reconcile this guilt other than by bringing William back into the fold in some way or other and it definitely seems like they are building to some kind of resolution. Or as much of a resolution as The X-Files can offer because they’re going to leave some questions (okay probably a lot) unanswered in case they want to do more (which if the ratings are any indication, Fox will definitely want more). When it comes to this storyline YMMV depending on how invested you are in this side of Mulder and Scully’s relationship and for the record I am very much in. I wear my shipper status and feelings with pride.
The intimacy levels are not just about the romantic and the bond between Mulder and Scully goes beyond William and any potential romantic involvement. The way “Home Again” (written by Glen Morgan) mirrors the season 2 return of Scully in “One Breath” (co-written by Glen Morgan) is achieved on several levels. From overt references with a flashback clip of Mulder talking to Scully, the talisman (Scully’s cross necklace/her mother’s mysterious quarter chain) and the desire to will someone back to life. Mulder needed to know what had happened to Scully after Duane Barry abducted her and Scully’s questions in the present shifts the focus onto a few personal mysteries rather than a larger conspiracy. Gillian Anderson nails the heightened emotions with this devastating line “I don’t care about the big questions right now, Mulder. I just want a chance to ask my mother a few of the little ones.”
In a touching conversation at Margaret Scully’s bedside, Scully wonders if they ever encountered anyone with the ability to wish another person back to life. Mulder of course did such a thing when Scully was in her coma – “I invented it” – and the “you’re a dark wizard” response is a much needed moment of levity before Scully’s mother wakes up, mentions William and then dies. Giving Scully even more reason to question her decision and think about the son she gave up. Mulder’s close relationship with Scully’s mother began in “One Breath” and Mulder and Scully’s lives have been so entwined on every level that I am so glad he was here for Scully in this moment (initially I was concerned he would be stuck in Philadelphia working on the case for the whole episode). Scully perfectly fits under Mulder’s chin in a visual which yep, caused more feelings.The big and little questions of The X-Files come in a variety of forms and one of the prevailing strengths of this show is its ability to weave between themes that impact the overall worldview of these characters (generally the mythology infused episodes) and ones that focus on something smaller (monster of the week episodes). These ‘monsters’ come in many different forms and can be funny (like last week’s episode “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster), scary (“Home”), other worldly (“Squeeze) or very much rooted in reality (“Irresistible”).
What “Home Again” does is combine a MOTW with the overall mythology and at times this episode does suffer from doing too much and would maybe have benefited from an extended run time. That’s not to say it isn’t a good episode and for me it is on a par with last week’s super fun standalone outing; while the monster backstory is pretty forgettable everything that radiates from Scully is engrossing. It also does a good job of reinforcing the strength of the Mulder and Scully relationship no matter how long they have been apart and what they have both sacrificed; the core of The X-Files is always them.
Costuming wise this is also reflected once again in their mirrored style/color choices from matching black coats in the emotional final scene to the blue of Scully’s shirt and the polka dots (!) on Mulder’s tie.The phrase “back in the day” gets used a couple of times; first at Margaret Scully’s bedside with regards to wishing someone back to life and later on when Mulder points out he’s not running up stairs to which Scully replies “Mulder, back in the day I used to do stairs and three inch heels.” Take that Jurassic World pump doubters. Mulder always one with a quippy comeback remarks “Scully, back in the day is now.”
What this does is deliver a playful moment in an episode that is steeped in heavy emotion showing that The X-Files is still a master at weaving between super serious or scary with lighthearted interactions. This pair has been through so much trauma on every level, but thankfully they still have each other and a sense of humor. This is required when going into dark buildings which may or may not house a dude who can pull arms off a human like wings off a fly.
Oh yes they also have flashlights and this prop will never not make me giddy. The flashlight moment which was teased in the trailer happened in “Home Again” and yep it was wonderful.
The episode ends with Scully doubling down on her partnership with Mulder and his work while also pointing out that there are so many mysteries with regards to William that she’ll “never have answered.” Mulder gives no verbal confirmation that they didn’t “treat him like trash” but the gesture of pulling her into him is an act of comfort and one intended to give Scully reassurance. I also have a feeling we might get some William answers or at least vague hints by the time this mini-series is over. Nothing concrete of course.

All signs have pointed to this being the last season of The Good Wife: Robert and Michelle King had already announced their departure, as had Julianna Margulies in a roundabout way and even the episode titles suggested this was the end by mirroring the season 1 one word format. The way The Good Wife unveiled this news was not so expected sharing the big news that there are only 9 episodes left (EVER) in a promo right before the Super Bowl halftime show.
This ending makes so much sense and I have been one of many voices saying the time to finish is now as The Good Wife has been meandering and feeling as lost as Alicia has for the last season and a half. BUT this news still hit me like a Will Gardner desk clearing moment and totally caught me by surprise; has any other show revealed when it is ending on a Super Bowl ad? This is such an Eli Gold move.
What happened next was a mixture of emotions from relief that there wouldn’t be a Good Wife without the Kings or Julianna Margulies quickly followed by sadness. Pretty much experiencing all the feelings at the Super Bowl party I was at (and this was all before Beyoncé slayed). So what does this mean for the final arc?
Well, Alicia hit her rock bottom last week as she spiraled and then emotionally vomited all over Lucca, followed by getting her elevator smooches on (about time). Case contrivance also leads Alicia back to Lockhart, Agos and Lee so she is back where the show started, but not back where she started professionally or personally. This season has been somewhat directionless and not just for Alicia so hopefully by having her return to the firm this will also create decent final storylines for Cary and Diane. It is also probably about time that Alicia and Peter call it quits officially and a divorce does seem imminent now that Peter’s campaign is over.
One thing the writers have been very successful in dealing with is the fallout of Will’s death from the immediate period which contributed to the best season of The Good Wife (the aforementioned desk clearance and Alicia’s first time leaving Lockhart Gardner was also a thing of beauty) to the recent ramifications of the road not traveled and lost love. However, there has been a distinct lack of focus at times and there has been too much time invested in recent campaign plot points.
Last year ended on a bitter note with green screen goodbyes and the rumors of rifts on set bleeding into the fabric of the show and even though those details are vague (The Good Wife keeps its shit locked tight) it definitely impacted and overshadowed Kalinda and Archie Panjabi’s departure.
Nothing will hit quite so hard as that seemingly innocuous episode that took place just over midway through season 5 and the straight out of nowhere death of Will Gardner – this is what I mean about The Good Wife having its shit locked tight – even though everyone knew Josh Charles’ contract was only extended for this one season. The aftermath of that moment is the first time I ever cried while writing a review and those episodes are still really difficult to watch even now. I keep wanting to revisit season 5 because it really is GREAT TELEVISION (side eyeing this piece so hard right now) and I know that when I do those swells of emotion will come because that gut punch is how I felt when I saw the announcement last night. Objectively I know it is time, but I am still going to miss the hell out of Alicia Florrick and the many characters that inhabit her world.
Plus all of those costumes that made me long for a job where I get to wear power clothes on a daily basis. *Looks down at the array of knitwear I am sporting right now*

Jessica came to live with Trish after the tragedy that befell her family and she then helped her adopted sister of sorts deal with her own shitty abusive situation. There’s not a lot that comes between this pair (aside from Jessica’s refusal to ask for help) and there is plenty of darkness in their lives; however some playful moments did sneak in before Kilgrave including Trish’s costume ideas for superhero Jessica (with the name Jewel to boot) and challenging douchebags in bars to bets they can never win. More of this please.
