Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

3 Jun

TV Instagram is mostly off the set this week with a whole bunch of award shows including cartwheels, mutual appreciations and a whole range of emotions. Plus some of our other faves.

This video is my happy place.

Katie Aselton shows how to be blonde and brunette at the same time.

The couple that wears matching onesies together is the couple that stays together.

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen showing off her big baby blues on the set of the new currently untitled Martin Scorsese Rock ‘n’ Roll HBO project. While I might still yell KATRINE when she appears on screen it is good to see Sørensen’s profile blowing up with Pitch Perfect 2 and as my new Game of Thrones character Karsi.

Transparent creator showrunner Jill Soloway captured Gaby Hoffmann busting out some extra special dance floor theatrics after the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Plus an encounter with Abbi and Ilana.

More from the Critics’ Choice Awards with Yael Grobglas snapping a car selfie with some of the Jane the Virgin cast on the way to the event.

Plus an excellent table shot with some unaware participants.

More from the best dressed cast at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Sad faces all around.

And more (plus a close up of Jane Levy’s excellent lip color).

Amy Schumer couldn’t attend the Critics’ Choice Awards as she was at the Peabody Awards (SO many awards this week), but TJ Miller made sure she was kinda there.

Season finales, upfronts and all kinds of other on and offset shenanigans in this week’s TV Instagram roundup.

Ah, Finn Polmar. All the sighs at Matthew Goode posing it up a storm in court. Please come back next season as there is far too much unresolved tension left to be explored.

https://instagram.com/p/2hahhDJXsv/?taken-by=thegoodwife_cbs

Super flexible Alan Cumming also on the set of The Good Wife shooting the finale and woah that’s a lot of bagels for the amount of people in this scene.

This is just a very cool low key shot from the Fox upfronts featuring New Girl’s Hannah Simone.

And this is a very fun dance party shot from the Fox upfronts; I’m two episodes into Empire and I am already hooked.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine ladies serving up a great mix of ‘huh?, ”what?’ and “eh?” face and like Chelsea Peretti I am drawing hearts around this photo.

The BAFTA TV awards took place last weekend and here are some post ceremony level hijinks from Ophelia Lovibond, Dawn O’Porter and Chris O’Dowd. Excellent pattern attire too.

The last episode of Orphan Black came with a whole lot of wincing at things being poked into other things they probably shouldn’t. Here is Ari Millen modeling with another version of himself.

Well this is just adorable. Peggy Olson skating forever burned into my mind. Helpful drinking tip from Elisabeth Moss too.

The You’re the Worst cast continue to be excellent at Instagram while also making the wait for season 2 seem forever away (still no date). A season 1 rewatch might be the only thing to solve this issue. Already coveting costumes.

And also this.

Taylor Schilling looks exactly how I would in this situation.

Amazing swimsuit alert courtesy of Diane Kruger.

6 May

A bumper TV Instagram round-up starting off with some Met Gala behind the scenes (and the no selfie rule was definitely ignored across the board) followed by the usual onset shenanigans.

Diane Kruger is one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s favorite Instagrammers and she doesn’t scrimp on the getting ready photos for this event. Also taking note of all the makeup products scattered across the table (with a random appearance from a landline phone). Not surprising in the least to see so many Chanel products.

This is a beautiful dreamlike shot of Kerry Washington’s pink Prada and as I mentioned in the red carpet rundown this gown is stunning from certain angles.

Selfie ban be damned.

Adorable couple alert part one! Plus a closer look at Keri Russell’s Altuzarra feathered frock. I bet the detail on this dress looks amazing in real life.

Adorable couple alert part two; both of these photos capture moments of laughter from actors we are used to seeing with more tormented expressions. I like it a lot.

This is also very cute from Vanessa Hudgens and her furry friend.

Somehow the Inside Amy Schumer parody of 12 Angry Men was even better than the crazy high expectations I had as they debated Amy’s fuckability and whether she is hot enough to be on TV. This episode skewered all those many conversations we have heard about Lena Dunham and so many other women (including Schumer); what an excellent group of dudes Schumer lined up to take on this episode long sketch.

The cast from your new favorite show, which isn’t actually real. Or, and this is speculation, a photo shoot for TV awards season focusing on supporting actors.

Emilia Clarke joined Instagram recently and she seems very taken by Kristin Wiig’s interpretation of Daenerys on The Tonight Show.

On Orphan Black they take ‘Star Wars Day’ seriously. And Tatiana Maslany proves once again that she can play anyone.

https://instagram.com/p/2JFuAzOqeg/?taken-by=jennyslate

New Jenny Slate and Ari Graynor show feels forever. Also Slate’s ship dress is excellent, as is her squat pose.

https://instagram.com/p/2JVdeEgkcA/?taken-by=allthenewsthatsfitztoprint

Another sneak look at Masters of Sex season 3 courtesy of Caitlin Fitzgerald. Yes I am very excited about the Josh Charles casting news.

https://instagram.com/p/2L1tPPnqj4/?taken-by=maisie_williams

Maisie Williams has been shooting Doctor Who this week so I am going to assume this excellent mess of curls and volume is courtesy of this.

https://instagram.com/p/2NOrUBnexV/?taken-by=ijessewilliams

Huh, Grey’s Anatomy shoots on a Saturday night.

Girls is going to Coney Island and a turtleneck paired with dungarees seems rather un-Jessa like so I am looking forward to seeing what character evolution leads to this costuming. Maybe it is part of her therapist look. Question of the Day – would you prefer your therapist was Betty Draper or Jessa?

TV Instagram round-up time with clones aplenty, a glimpse at what Coachella would have been like in the days of The WB, show crossover ideas, tees to covet and what goes on between takes on Mad Men.

Spot the real Tatiana Maslany and Orphan Black season 3 opens with a clone filled scene requiring a whole lot of time and several clone doubles. Extra points for whoever uploaded this picture for using tilt shift giving it a dreamy aura much like the scene itself.

More Mad Men treats from new Instagram favorite Elisabeth Moss and an intense looking game of giant Jenga. Not as intense as the scene in this week’s episode which led to Peggy’s inclusion in this picture parade.

https://instagram.com/p/1rggeeQPnB/?taken-by=busyphilipps

Coachella Part Two delivers on the photo front thanks to Busy Philipps and a WB reunion. A whole lot of good white tee action going on here.

https://instagram.com/p/1oSSm4QPlO/?taken-by=busyphilipps

Busy Philipps knows what the people want delivering a Scott Speedman photo shoot and while I am partial to the ‘Shy Speedman’ I think “Smiley Speedman” is my true weakness.

Laverne Cox looks stunning as does Julia Garner, although I can’t help but get a little nervous at the sight of Garner and if Kimmy will make an appearance on tonight’s season finale of The Americans.

https://instagram.com/p/1uTEaruqcu/?taken-by=jennyslate

Jenny Slate is super cute while showing off this amazing Wayne’s World Clashist tee while reigniting the hair envy I get while watching Obvious Child.

https://instagram.com/p/1g0gr1AkaR/?taken-by=allthenewsthatsfitztoprint

Caitlin Fitzgerald gets back into the Masters of Sex swing of things and the checks are very on point for 2015 as well as the 1960s. Nice emoji usage summing up maybe where this year will take Libby Masters.

Patterns aplenty on The Today Show as shows collide with Gina Rodriguez and Taryn Manning. While Diane Guerrero is already on both Jane the Virgin and Orange is the New Black I could definitely see some of the other ladies on Jane ending up in Litchfield. Or some of the ladies heading to the Marbella when they get released from prison.

Playing House returns Tuesday, August 4 and in the meantime you can stock up on plenty of Jammer merch, some of it as modeled by the shows stars Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair. I am very excited to have these ladies back in my life.

The Wish List: Sarah’s Leather Jacket on Orphan Black

21 Apr

Leather jackets are a big trend on television at the moment and Sarah Manning has been sporting one since we first met her back on the train right before she fell into this world of clones and conspiracy. For Sarah her black clothes and particularly her leather jacket and boots are her armor against what has turned into an even crazier and more dangerous existence; season 3 somehow managed to up the stakes even further.

Each character Tatiana Maslany plays is so distinctive thanks to her performance, but costuming and hair/make-up also plays an important part in creating who each clone is. With Sarah, her hardened quality comes from both how she holds herself and how she appears; this is one of the reasons why it is so good when we see the clones playing each other as was the case in the season 3 premiere “The Weight of this Combination” as Maslany somehow manages to show exactly who she is supposed to be. There are not enough words of wonder to describe her performance. Or how much I want a leather jacket. Maybe almost as much as I want the Cosima coat.

Orphan Black 3.01 Sarah leather jacketAs with most leather jackets this one is pricey, but (and I apologize for how wanky this sounds) it is an investment piece. Sarah’s is the ‘Assembly’ biker jacket from All Saints and this look is so synonymous with Sarah’s style that she is also wearing it in Helena’s dream (with her Clash tee!).

Orphan Black 3.01 dreamAnd Sarah’s not the only one sporting a bit of leather at their ‘Shite Beach’ hangout spot with Felix rocking a leather sleeved Ted Baker London ‘Annamae’ Ombré Moto Jacket.

Orphan Black 3.01 FelixThe coat game on Orphan Black is strong (see also Delphine) and check back for more posts on this brilliant bonkers show throughout season 3.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

10 Apr

Another magazine heavy week with Mad Men and Orphan Black doing the final promo push. Plus pretty dresses aplenty from various panels, premieres and events.

Tatiana Maslany AdweekTatiana Maslany gives good face on the cover of Adweek and a thoughtful response to a question relating to Strong Female Characters:

“The characters all have a complexity to them, an unapologetic individuality. They’re not physically superhuman and emotionless and without flaws. Having a strong female character doesn’t mean she’s beyond suffering and fragility. There’s a fearlessness. That to me is strong writing for women. It defies gender.”

Not the first time I have swooned (nor will it be the last) at how she talks about the multiple roles she plays on Orphan Black and what it means to be a Strong Female Character (and why this terminology is outdated). Maslany also discusses whether the show is a feminist piece and while she doesn’t thing that’s how it begun life she believes that it is now adding “Women aren’t often the default in movies, TV, media—there’s often very limited space for them. But it’s exciting to mine these stories and see a show that puts women at the center of it.”

Tatiana MaslanyBonus smiley Maslany and her favorite show on TV is one we definitely agree with “I love Broad City. It’s that unapologetic approach where the characters are not defined by their gender. It’s all about their personalities, sense of humor, flaws and friendship.” For more from this Adweek interview head here.

IMG_1497A stylized Stylist cover with Kiernan Shipka going full 1960s with a Twiggy homage. This makeup looks great on Shipka even if it ages her up by quite a bit. Not too sure about the velvet headscarf but I’m guessing Shipka didn’t want to go full pixie (and there are plenty of Twiggy headscarf modelling shots). In the interview Shipka reveals that she has the necklace Don gave Sally with SD on it, although she hasn’t found an occasion to wear it yet. There was sadly no Sally (or Betty) in the mid-season Mad Men premiere so I’m holding out hope she will appear in this Sunday’s episode.

Julia Louis-DreyfusJulia Louis-Dreyfus goes full leopard print at the Paley Center ‘Evening with Veep event and as is generally the case with JLD she is killing it. I’m a little so so on the footwear, but when wearing a bold print nude heels are fine I guess.

Lake BellNow here’s a pair of fantastic shoes and Lake Bell’s choice of multicolor Christian Louboutin mules work wonders with her equally bold orange Dior tuxedo inspired frock at a New York screening of Dior and I.

Lily JamesAnother pair of so-so shoes with a fantastic dress as Lily James does the final leg of the Cinderella promo tour in Tokyo. James has worn plenty of princessy frocks recently and it is good to see her in something with a shorter hemline, but just as pretty in star covered Valentino.

Vanessa HudgensVanessa Hudgens is ditching crochet attire and Coachella this year for Broadway and at the Gigi opening night after party she makes a dramatic impact in a stunning Alice + Olivia gown. A sleek blunt bob and dark lip color all add up to create one of her best looks yet.

Mad Men returned this week and one of its stars joined Instagram; so far Elisabeth Moss is killing it with the set photos, costume peaks and cat pictures. Plus more Masters of Sex season 3 costume hints and a new furry addition to the Girls set.

One of my favorite Peggy costumes (from “The Flood”) and a break from the dreaded pantyhose. I have definitely worn a variation of this outfit. Probably not with those shoes.

Random Mad Men hookup reveal. Or rather a preview of their appearance on Watch What Happens Live. Elisabeth Moss prepared for this interview in the best way she could – by watching Real Housewives. Have I mentioned how much I adore her?!

January Jones is still the undisputed Instagram hashtag queen and her co-star has far to go to reach these heights. This includes Jones’ Easter post in a very on point Betty frock from her Coca-Cola audition back in season 1.

Carrie Bradshaw wasn’t too hot on technology particularly phones and SJP has similar feelings; getting lightly teased by an off camera Kerry Washington as part of their Glamour cover behind the scenes.

The cast of Orphan Black (minus the clones) at WonderCon doing the mass selfie thing and we are only a couple of weeks away from season 3!

As with Peggy, I love seeing Virginia in pants on Masters of Sex and as there’s going to be a time jump I’m really looking forward to seeing how this impacts Virginia’s costuming. These sneak peeks are fantastic.

https://instagram.com/p/0-uV9XgkR1/?taken-by=allthenewsthatsfitztoprint

A slightly different look for this Masters of Sex trio.

My first question when I saw this photo was whether this is a new addition to the Girls cast as a puppy would sure be a step up from Desi for Marni. It turns out this is Moxie, Allison Williams’ new pup and so sadly I don’t think we will be seeing this cutie onscreen.

TV show magic and a less disruptive option than using the real thing. Those are some very un-Sherlock clothes there on Jonny Lee Miller.

Tatiana Maslany Covers Flare and a New Orphan Black Season 3 Promo

3 Mar

The lack of Emmy nomination caused outrage, but not every awards body is making the same mistake and on Sunday Tatiana Maslany won Best TV Actress in a Drama at the Canadian Screen Awards for her portrayal of all the clones on Orphan Black. The show returns next month and this means more Maslany as every clone ever (okay not quite every clone ever and in season 3 she will share the clone load with Ari Millen). Magazine covers and promos with a heap of new footage ahoy!

Maslany is on the cover of Flare and as with recent runway shows there is a 70s theme going on; with Maslany as their face for the April issue they have produced 3 different covers each depicting a look from this era and this amount of outfit/hair switch-ups is probably what Maslany calls every day of the week.

Tatiana Maslany FlareAnd here is a look best suited to a Runaways gig:

Flare Tatiana MaslanyInside the issue Maslany discusses one bonus of playing multiple and extremely varied parts all on the same show “I never want to be one thing. As an actor, I never want to be the girl who was that. Which is why Orphan Black is so exciting. I’m never going to be typecast because I get to play all of these different characters.”

And here is a shot from the editorial that ditches the 70s theme and instead looks like a throwback to 90s Calvin Klein ads and now I really want to see a huge CK billboard with Maslany’s face on it.

Tatiana MaslanyThe way Orphan Black examines body horror and so many different types of women (all played by mostly one woman) is one of its major strengths and when Maslany is asked about Strong Female Characters she bristles at this terminology because of how narrow it is “I think the scripts for strong women have been warped into this idea of strong women as unemotional, in power suits—a kind of men. Or they acquire masculine qualities in order to mask the feminine qualities.” Instead she gives an insight into what her dream kind of role would be citing John Cassavetes’ A Woman Under the Influence starring Gena Rowlands:

“She [Gena Rowlands’ character Mabel] is so unwilling to be defined by her gender. She’s ugly, funny, weird, vulnerable, very needy. She goes everywhere with no fear. I find fearlessness—which doesn’t mean not being scared; it’s like you’re scared, but you still go—those are the characters I’m interested in. I think strength is being able to reveal the grossest sides of yourself without apology and without a wink to the audience or fear of being ugly. That, to me, is strength.”

Between the multiple parts she plays on Orphan Black we have seen Maslany embody all of these things and it is testament to her work that I still forget she is playing all of these various characters. Speaking of which, here is the new season 3 promo and the shit continues to hit the clone fan. Instant feels at Sarah getting super mad at Mrs S for what has happened to her sister Helena.

Orphan Black returns Saturday, April 18 and for more from Tatiana Maslany’s Flare cover story head here.

12 Feb

Behind the Insta-Scenes has guest stars aplenty and hanging out on set (in more ways than just mooching around) from a variety of shows such as Jane the VirginOrphan Black and Broad City.

Bellamy Young captures Scott Foley looking good in a hoodie on the set of Scandal. From the caption I guess we have to assume that sadly there won’t be a Mellie/Jake interaction.

The Mindy Project continues to kill it in the guest star department with Laverne Cox appearing in a later episode as Tamra’s cousin Sheena. I cannot wait.

Gina Rodriguez celebrated her one year anniversary since auditioning for Jane the Virgin with this shot and sweet sentiment. I need those candles in my life.

http://instagram.com/p/yxblS6t6mP/?modal=true

Yep (although not currently Friday, still wonderful).

Nick Kroll guest starred on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and it is as brilliant as Kroll’s excellent beard.

http://instagram.com/p/y84FKCAVEp/?modal=true

Behind the scenes green screen magic or in this case black and white magic from The Flash’s Grant Gustin.

http://instagram.com/p/y0Ep3CjFrk/?modal=true

I also love Gilliam Jacobs’ Clare Vivier bag.

Diane Kruger continues to win Instagram and this time it is not Pacey related.

Helena’s creepy trinkets anyone?

Tatiana Maslany Talks Awards, Filming Clone Scenes and Orphan Black Season 3

10 Feb

Obviously we are very deep into movie award season – red carpet posts dominate TV Ate My Wardrobe at this point – and while TV accolades are pretty much done until the Emmys at the end of the summer we want to share this delightful Gold Derby interview with Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany, which took place a few weeks ago just prior to the SAG Awards.

This interview is perfect lunch break length and covers a number of topics including the various awards she has and hasn’t been nominated for. The lack of Emmy nomination outrage also comes up and Maslany invokes Amy Poehler’s pudding metaphor from Say Yes. These interviews take place across the internet waves via Google Hangout and there is an intimacy to them (as well as the odd technical bump) despite interviewer and subject being in different locations and it is one reason why we have shared several Gold Derby interviews in the past (including Josh Charles and Keri Russell). I am also a little bit obsessed with Tatiana Maslany’s mass of hair which is invoking all the Felicity related feelings.

Tatiana MaslanyIn terms of season 3 Maslany doesn’t go into too much detail offering up vague hints including the ominous sounding estranged relationships between the clones and how some will falter while others will be strong enough to withstand the conflict they face. She also discusses how the male clone story which was introduced last year allows them to explore more aspects of nature versus nurture from the other side of the coin as well as the sprawling conspiracy. Plus it gives her more time off. Some of the filming process is highlighted and Maslany is quick to point out how valuable her clone double Kathryn Alexandre is. The big dance sequence from the season 2 finale is referenced and as they become more comfortable with the technical side of filming they are “challenging the limits of the format” even more in season 3.

After doing a brief stint on Parks and Recreation back in season 5 (which Maslany speaks of with immense fondness) she is asked which current TV shows she would like to appear on and they are all TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites including Broad City; Tatiana Maslany is “crazy about those girls.”

Orphan Black returns Saturday, April 18 and I cannot wait.
