Game of Thrones is back in just under two weeks and we’ve got plenty of photos from the season 6 premiere. Plus cast hangouts on and off the set, the end of The Good Wife, White House trips and Megan Fox crushing it.
Hanging with her on screen sister in a very intimate fashion. My GoT dream is still to see this pair reunite, find Nymeria and then burn the place/the Boltons/the Freys to the ground; the new trailer promises shows both Stark women preparing to do battle of sorts and I am very excited.
Outlander returned this week and Jamie Fraser himself; Sam Heughan was the Grand Marshal at the New York City Tartan Day Parade. As a Fraser this makes me very happy indeed.
Things happened on The Americans last week; one of those things was sadly not Nina infiltrating Elizabeth and Philip’s place of work. Also woah look at how young Henry looks in that picture.
Double Annet Mahendru and a blurry finger pistol shot with Michael Aronov. Note the Ugg boots which is always one of my favorite below the camera details that you get to see in BTS photos.
If you want your Jon Snow red carpet fix then you will have to make do with this (plus bonus Ygritte) as Kit Harington was a no show at the Game of Thrones season 6 premiere.
This was not a surprise and it means the attention can rest on those characters that weren’t stabbed to death in the last episode of season 5; even if Jon Snow is all anyone has on their mind and it is very likely Kit Harington will be back in some capacity. The Game of Thrones red carpet is always a fun one and this year is no different.
The bandeau top is a hard garment to pull off on the red carpet and Maisie Williams does just this in a Emilio de la Morena ensemble. 50s meets super contemporary by pairing a high waisted floral skirt with this teeny tiny top and Maisie Williams is our standout. Very different florals from Emilia Clarke in a strapless black gown and some really great accessorizing, but does this need a necklace? Maybe I’m so used to seeing her with that dragon choker, but I do think this needs something else, Great orange lipstick though. And then going for a very classic look is Nathalie Emmanuel also scoring the bold lip color points. This purple on Sophie Turner is fantastic as is the silhouette of this Stella McCartney gown and the gold choker is the ideal accessory here. Can Sansa get some power and revenge on season 6? Please and thank you.Going for slightly more relaxed long dress styling is Lena Headey and she is working it like a charm.Tormund definitely doesn’t have a fake beard as Kristofer Hivju’s shows on the red carpet last night and he scrubs up rather well out of his wildling leader gear. Wife and journalist Gry Molvær’s sparkly dress is an icy color treat.New handsome dude in a tux alert and Joe Naufahu will be playing Khal Moro this season.I love how shifty Iwan Rheon looks here and also that his shoes are two-tone.More florals and the photo assumption I’m getting is that Amanda Peet is bummed out that she is at another one of these events while her own excellent HBO show Togethernessaired its very last episode last night. I am also very sad about this cancellation.
Last week spring fever was in the air with a whole array of bold patterns and color; this edition of “Out of the Box” is a little bit more varied with some very fun outfits, fancy awards wear and more magazine cover stunners.Despite my white clothing reservations – because I am a spiller – Danai Gurira crushes it at Black Girls Rock! in this very cool Cushnie Et Ochs jumpsuit number that wouldn’t look out of place in Studio 54’s heyday. Gurira is on a red carpethot streak and all I can say regarding Walking Dead is Michonne better not be the one on the end of Jeffery Dean Morgan’s bat. More white and Caitriona Balfe does the whole casual ladysuit thing with aplomb at the Television Academy’s Outlander panel discussion. A simple and super cool twist on one of my favorite trends and I’m looking forward to all the incredible costumes when Outlander returns tomorrow (Saturday 9). Alison Pill in a very cute outfit at the premiere of The Night Manager and one that a) is perfect for someone who isn’t in the project of the event they are attending and b) something I would like to see in my closet. At the Olivier Awards Uzo Aduba took a break from performing in The Maids and looked elegant in this orange off the shoulder Elizabeth Kennedy gown. And now all I want is a bag shaped like a ball. Making their official debut as a couple at the Olivier Awards, which makes this sound like we’re stepping out of a society novel and also maybe trying to shift attention from the question Kit Harington has been asked repeatedly since the Game of Thrones season 5 finale.
This isn’t news for anyone who follows celeb dating stories (which I do), but I am always thrilled when IRL couples walk the carpet together especially when their characters were also together on screen. I’m not a hundred percent in love with the shape of Rose Leslie’s gown, but the color and pattern is stunning. And by Look of the Week I mean look of the week. The shipping of Marcia Clark and Chris Darden was the biggest surprise to come out of American Crime Story (something I wrote a little bit more on in my Observercolumn this week). Here are Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown at an American Crime Story For Your Consideration event earlier this week; up close I really like Sarah Paulson’s frock, but that level of sheer in the wide shot and lining does not do it for me.Another striking Lupita Nyong’o magazine cover as part of Variety’s annual “Power of Women” issue celebrating her work with Mother Health International. Excellent trench and background color elevate this shot, but Lupita’s face is what really makes this a standout image. The Gilmore Girls revival is in full swing and because I am only just finishing up season 1 (I know) I am avoiding reading this Entertainment Weeklyarticle and looking at the photos until I’ve caught up; it is going to be hard but also that is totally on me.
They both look great and I particularly like Alexis Bledel’s ensemble and lipstick (of course). It’s weird seeing them in clothes that don’t give me all the flashbacks to early aughts fashion nightmares.Emilia Clark put a sparkly bird on it wearing Gucci on her Glamour cover and there’s a lot of chat about nudity on Game of Thrones including Michiel Huisman’s “perfect bottom.”
Happy Oscars Day! What better way to kick off this red carpet extravaganza than with a rundown of the many amazing looks from one of the highlights in this super stacked award season.
The Independent Spirit Awards take place in a marquee on the beach in Santa Monica and so it has a very different vibe to what we will be seeing later today. Bold color and print reign supreme with a more chilled out aesthetic; here are our favorite looks from the ladies yesterday.Brie Larson has been crushing it all year and this intricately beaded Chanel number is a contender for ultimate best (with her Golden Globes dress as a close second). Another win for Larson – her speech is definitely worth a watch – and it is likely that she will be adding another to her awards shelf this evening. As I mentioned on Friday, Larson is on my highly anticipated Oscar dress list.Third year in a row for Cate Blanchett at the Independent Spirit Awards (nominee in 2014 and presenter in 2015) and another triumphant frock choice. The Spring ’16 Gucci collection is pretty much the perfect for Blanchett and this event and as with Larson I cannot wait to see what she will be wearing tonight.A strong 1970s influence for Nikki Reed’s Etro gown and the color/pattern mix is the kind of bathroom decor I dream of (this is a good thing I promise). Bonus points for the relaxed fishtail braid.Another print delight and supporting actress nominee Cynthia Nixon has got the whole fancy daytime event at the beach thing down.At the recent Michael Kors Collection Fall 16 RTW show there was a whole lot of amazing collars on display and this dress is one I had saved in my “things I would definitely wear” folder (yes I have one of those). While I would stick with it buttoned up (as it was on the runway) the cuffs are much better this way and Emilia Clarke looks great. Excellent bag choice too.Mya Taylor made history by becoming the first transgender actress to win an Independent Spirit Award (or any major film awards) and her speech is an essential watch. Another fantastic dress which is giving me all the 1970s feelings and a sparkly patterned delight.Rachel McAdams has stepped up her red carpet game this awards season and this Solace London ensemble is equal parts grand and simple. Minimal makeup and fuss free hair adds to the chilled out vibe as this dress could be overwhelming at an event like this if the overall styling was different. Independent Spirit Awards co-host Kate McKinnon sounds the #LadySuitWatch2016 klaxon and looks spectacular. Thanks to this one scene Carol parody I now want to see Kate McKinnon in a feature length version.Going a little Gatsby with her sunglasses choice and Rooney Mara looking all kinds of relaxed out in the sun while wearing the most Rooney Mara dress in Hugo Boss. A change in glasses and I think I just found my new Twitter cover photo.
Stay tuned as we’ve got dudes in suits and couples coming up next!
Time to serve up the best of Instagram over the past week including some more fashion week, awards and plenty of behind the scenes shenanigans including Agent Carter, Jane theVirgin, The Americans and Girls.
Girls returned with a strong season 5 premiere and so much of this was down to Allison Williams crushing it on Marnie’s wedding day (new writing gig and more thoughts on that here). The extreme make-up was such a good visual joke so it was fun to see a very make-up Jekyll and Hyde version of Williams here.
Agent Carter did something very fun/different this week with an elaborate song and dance dream sequence routine involving Peggy’s current love interests, her enemies and friends (including Angie which pleased me immensely). Jarvis also got a pretty good end of this deal.
Bridget Regan is everywhere at the moment and even though she has a tendency to play the villain I am also always rooting for her. This is adorable for starters. If not a little complicated now.
At the Costume Designers Guild Awards this week Mindy Kaling wore a stunning custom Salvador Perez gown and here she gives a sneak peek into the prep of an event like this. And I love her for this.
Fox are staying in the live musical business with an adaptation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and as with the recent Grease: Live this cast has increased my interest levels.
From one Rocky to another and Russell Tovey’s dog is now the proud owner of a sweater matching the Gant by Michael Bastian one that Tovey wore as Kevin (and then lent to Patrick) on Looking last season.
Keidrich Sellati who plays Henry Jennings on The Americans grew 6 inches over the break and considering season 4 is starting up where season 3 left off this could prove to be visually interesting when Henry next pops up. Holly Taylor’s photo here form Sellati’s last day on set really does make them look like siblings mucking around instead of posing properly for a picture.
Oh to see in those garment bags. As you can tell I am very much looking forward to the return of The Americansand seeing what treats Katie Irish has in store for us (previous Americans costume designer and TV Ate My Wardrobe fave Jenny Gering co-designed the look of the premiere with Irish).
Sarah Michelle Gellar went all nostalgic with her WCW using a shot from this mesmerizing WB promo. Right before she dropped this HUGE Cruel Intentions bombshell (this post is currently being written to the always incredible Cruel Intentions soundtrack).
I always made the mistake of wearing sandals/flip flops to clubs in the summer and this was always a giant sticky mistake. I have never ended up with red feet though (I did once see bloody footprints in the morning and I put this down to glass rather than something more sinister).
That very busy time of year when it is not only New York Fashion Week, but the awards keep on coming and shows are returning/are deep into their filming schedule. It is good for “Behind the Insta-Scenes” as there is plenty of variety this week.
Meanwhile Grant Gustin is also moonlighting over on Supergirl; Gustin and Melissa Benoist do look very good together. I really need to catch up on Supergirl before this episode happens.
Constance Zimmer’s very on point sweater this weekend gets extra points for the Galentine’s tag (and now I’m sad I forgot to include Rachel and Quinn in this post – next year).
NYFW is all over Instagram including many runway shots and this one from The Cut’s Stella Bugbee captures the fluidity and pretty from the Altuzarra show.
For anyone who has seen the excellent John Mulaney Netflix comedy special The Comeback Kid or if you just like dogs wearing coats – this one is for you.
Another weekend, another awards red carpet. The SAGs are always a fun one because there is just as much glam, but as with the Critics’ Choice it seems like people are able to relax and mix it up a little. Especially those who have been part of this process for what feels like half a year now.
Plenty of winning looks to scroll through and for part 2 check head here.
Everything about this Louis Vuitton geometric gown is a sequin dream and this might be the best Alicia Vikander has looked all awards season (and she has lookedpretty damn good). This red carpet cycle has also been very good to Rachel McAdams both sartorially and professionally with Spotlight continuing its winning streak (finally seeing it this afternoon). Beaded floral Elie Saab Haute Couture serves up so much drama that I’m willing to drop my usual “this needs a red lipstick” sentiment. For Mad Men’s finale hurrah – shakes fist at Downton Abby for winning – Kiernan Shipka continues to show that she isn’t just one of the best dressed teens, but one of the best dressed in a beautiful Erdem gown. Marisa Tomei is the picture of cool elegance in a green beaded long sleeve – hitting two trends of this red carpet – in Zuhair Murad. A sparkly long sleeve delight for 2016 SAG winner Queen Latifah in a killer Michael Costello gown. The Game of Thrones cast brought it big to the SAGs with Maisie Williams showing once again that she makes some very interesting choices. This time ditching Mexican wrestlers and 90s chokers for a bold blue textured tea length Ermanno Scervino frock. I bet it has pockets.
Onscreen sister and IRL BFF Sophie Turner going a little Scarlett O’Hara in Caroline Herrera and it’s really working for her. Maybe needs a dramatic lip color to go with the high drama of the gown.
Pretty in pink for Emilia Clarke getting the bold color memo in Dior Haute Couture. A dress which JLaw is probably looking at and wondering why she hasn’t been offered it.
Oh Pedro Pacal, I do miss you and your fun flamboyance on Game of Thrones. I’m on the fence with Sarah Paulson’s Armani Privé dress and I’m wondering how many Koosh balls were sacrificed to make it.
You’re welcome.
Rooney and Kate Mara (neither sure of how to pronounce their surname if their chat on E! is anything to go by) both in Valentino, with Rooney very much leaning into her usual style. And it’s fine because it totally works.
For more from the SAG Awards red carpet head here.
Black and white frocks don’t have to be the safe choice as this next collection of Golden Globes 2016 red carpet highlights demonstrate.
Laverne Cox is gasp worthy in Elizabeth Kennedy serving all levels of drama from her gown to her makeup.
SO MANY CAPES THIS YEAR! All caps needed because Emilia Clarke’s Valentino gown is a vampy turn I did not expect from her.
And for a softer caped turn we have Saoirse Ronan in ethereal Yves Saint Laurent couture.
One of the ‘surprising not so surprising’ wins of the evening came from Lady Gaga (who thanked Matt Bomer first because who wouldn’t?) and she looks like a movie star from the 50s in custom Atelier Versace.
I know some were underwhelmed by Alicia Vikander’s apron style pleated Louis Vuitton, but I am so here for it as it matches her general super chill vibe. And I think she will go big at the Oscars.
This Alexander McQueen is a little witchy boudoir from Caitriona Balfe, but I am also enjoying this twist on a black gown.
A train looks incredible, but it can also cause logistical problems with people standing on it as Taraji P. Henson found out when she went up to collect Best Actress; so I can see why she changed out of this Stella McCartney wonder for the after parties. It looks incredible here as she poses with her Golden Globe.
Valentino featured big on our end of year “Look of the Week” posts and this is another excellent frock from this fashion house with Kirsten Dunst going full cleav. It is a shame she didn’t win for her Fargo role, but hopefully another project in the future will mean more Dunst on TV.
A prelude to the main event tonight and two more daytime shindigs with the BAFTA awards season tea (with actual tea and for some reason a no selfie policy) and the 2016 Film Independent Filmmaker Grant and Spirit Award Nominees Brunch. Not quite living up to the sartorial offerings from the AFI Awards luncheon on Friday and this was a big case of scroll down nightmare when going through the photos; however there are still several outfits to love, some I am still not sure about and dudes in suits that are not black.
By far my favorite look from the day and Alicia Vikander is high up on the most anticipated list for Golden Globes dresses tonight. This red striped Altuzarra is such a breath of fresh air much like most of her red carpet choices.
Also going for something simple and cool is Caitriona Balfe in a belted tuxedo inspired LBD (with pockets!). Also reminding me that yep, I still need to get back on the Outlander watch.
Nathalie Emmanuel edges towards maybe too casual, but also this is a really cute outfit so I’m gonna say it is more than fine. Still on the lookout for the perfect leather pleated skirt and this one combined with the white tee fits this description. The dash of pattern on her silk headband and bag also help make this outfit pop.
Digging the suit and grey sweater look on Mark Ruffalo.
The jacket is maybe a tad too short, but I really like what Michael Shannon is going for here.
Oh hey there Nyle! I really wanted you to win ANTM and yet I still haven’t watched the final episode (thanks Twitter spoiler for that). Glad to see him on the red carpet circuit and following on from Ryan Gosling wearing something from the brown palette. This is one of two dresses that I can’t quite work out if I like or not and there is so much going on with Priyanka Chopra’s Alex Perry frock (sounding a lot like Alex Parrish – her Quantico character). Maybe the top half should be stick to one black texture and that would make it seem less chaotic. Her face looks really great though.
Brie Larson and Saoirse Ronan are two more names on our most anticipated list for tonight and while I wasn’t enamored by either frock choice at this BAFTA event, this photo I adore.
The second of the ‘on the fence’ frocks and Rooney Mara wore this to both the Film Independent Spirit Award brunch and the BAFTA tea – wearing the same thing to two events when you are attending this many is beyond fine in my eyes – and it is definitely very Rooney Mara in both color scheme and style. Definitely edging closer to love than eh.
Yesterday I hit the BIG REVEAL episode of Mr Robot and while I was already aware of part of the twist, the execution and Rami Malek’s performance delivered and it didn’t really matter that I had been spoiled. Malek continues to go for buttoned up sans tie and I am so into this style choice on him. It is also nice to see him out of Elliot’s trademark hoodie.
Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2015” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.
Now is the turn of a huge range of shows we have been watching this year from network, cable and streaming with comedy, drama and all those other hard to categorize scripted offerings. There has been so many fantastic individual moments that we have had to split this post into two otherwise the scrolling would be endless.
Here is Part 1 of the standout costuming moments in 2015.
Most On Point Accessorizing
What better way to appease the dragon that has done a runner than wear a necklace bearing a very familiar image and this comes in particularly handy for Daenerys in “The Dance of Dragons” when Drogon makes a very timely entrance. The influence of Daenerys’ heritage has been visible throughout the texture of her costuming which at times has been scaly in appearance. Yunus & Eliza designed this stunning piece (click here for a closer look) and it really is fit for a queen.
The Leather Jacket Award
As with last year there have been a whole slew of leather jacket wearing stunners, but there is one lady who takes wearing this garment to every outfit level and that is Jessica Jones. Not pictured are the very 90s looking jeans that are also glued to her body pretty much all of the time and this signature look makes sense when the show takes a deep dive into her backstory.
Who Rocks a Lot of Polka Dots
Cookie Lyon has gone through a style evolution since she was released from prison going from matching animal prints to high end garments as she has caught up with trends and got accustomed to her wealth. One of my favorites is this Dolce & Gabbana polka dot blouse; perfect for a dramatic exit and a fun take on the tablecloth party trick. Cookie’s always going to eat.
Best Mustache – 1980s Edition
Not only did Oscar Isaac take dancing in dad jeans to Bruce Springsteen to new levels, but he also worked this mustache in ways I did not think possible in Show Me a Hero. The mini-series from David Simon is terrific and devastating and not just for the 80s fashion. And even several months after watching it still makes my heart ache when I think about Oscar Isaac’s performance.
Best Mustache – 1970s Edition
Of all the Mad Men characters who would embrace a new decade with some additional facial hair it really makes sense that it would be Roger Sterling. It could easily be kinda skeezy (and of course Roger has entered this territory on more than one occasion), but there’s also something elder statesmen about it and that’s what he is. And I would happily watch an endless loop of Roger and Peggy hanging out in their now deserted office.
Top Hat Placement and Male Nudity on Cable
Alleviating the awkward of the first time with cute top hat parlor tricks is Bertie on The Knick and it is all around adorable. While this is the most of Michael Angarano that we get to see, cable has embraced male nudity this season on a level we haven’t previously seen with both The Leftovers and The Affair showing far more dudes naked than women this year. Game of Thrones you have some catching up to do.
#LadySuitWatch2015 Shorts Winner
My response to seeing Abbi as Val for the first time is pretty much the same as Ilana’s jaw on the floor expression:
Ladysuits of the shorts variety are classic cabaret attire and I am so here for this Judy Garland/Liza Minnelli style and singing mashup inspiration.
#LadySuitWatch2015 Patterned Shirt Winner
Denise is not only stylish as hell as demonstrated by her movie premiere ladysuit wearing ways, but she is also one of the best things about Aziz Ansari’s excellent Master of None helping make a citizen’s arrest in the stellar “Ladies and Gentleman” and offering up sound dating advice (even if she ends up ignoring it).
The Outwear and Boots Crime Fighting Title
Season 3 of The Bridge (Broen/Bron) lost one of its main stars, but didn’t lose any of its quality introducing a new partner for Saga who turned out to be just as compelling (if not even more so than his predecessor – sorry Martin). Style wise the pair complement each other rather well favoring classic coats and boots for their crime fighting attire; Saga is still all about the olive leather pants and Henrik also tucks his trousers into his boots because who wants those flapping in the wind while running after a suspect.
Best Reason to Invest in a Big Warm Coat
Fortitude is part X-Files like mystery, part exploration of the human condition in an extreme and isolated environment. It is also a very good advert for furry hoods and big coats; yes I even invested in my own.
Red Lipstick Queen
There is plenty to love about Peggy Carter and season 2 is just a couple of weeks away! Agent Carter also gets added to the How TV Ate My Wardrobe list in the makeup department as I invested in Peggy’s Besame 1946 lipstick and there is also the bonus of beautiful packaging along with fantastic red lips.
Denim Dream
1981 was a great year for denim and there is a residual 70s influence on fashion in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp with high waisted flares and dungaree delights. Also pairing anything with short shorts is fair game.
Best Future April Ludgate
2015 saw the end of Parks and Recreationprompting plenty of finale tears. This also means saying goodbye to one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s biggest style influences and I am happy to report that future April Ludgate is still very much in our sartorial good graces.
What to Wear on Your European Vacation
Traveling across Europe with Hannibal Lecter means packing your finest threads and Bedelia is up for that challenge with this blue 1940s spy looking ensemble even if this is the opposite of staying incognito.
Sunglasses I Need in my Life
Yes I am still highly coveting Gretchen’s round opal yellow Wayfarer sunglasses for the second year in a row.
Most On Point Accessorizing Part 2
Gina is not just the TV Ate My Wardrobe Sweater Queen (her turtleneck game has been strong all season), but she’s also the reason why I yell “Wolfie” at the screen whenever any of the direwolves pop up on Game of Thrones. So when Gina appeared on screen in the episode “Beach House,” which kicked off the new year for Brooklyn Nine-Nine in this hat/scarf/glove combo it also caused me to yell “Wolfie” on this occasion too.
Festive Relationship Goals
Looking is almost over (*sob*) and before its one final outing in the form of a TV movie next year, let us bask in Eddie’s Santa outfit and how Agustín went from loathsome narcissist to the dude (and ship) I was heavily invested in by the end of season 2. Good character development, show.
