Out of the Box is glad to have several shows back this week and to celebrate we’re taking a red carpet break before this weekend’s Golden Globes to focus on the looks that stood out on TV. The People’s Choice Awards were pretty uninspiring and one of the only notable outfits was Anna Faris’ Golden Girls like ensemble (I mean this as a compliment), everything else was pretty shoulder shrug and it’s clear that all the top shelf gowns have been reserved for this weekend. So let’s turn to TV; we’ve got a couple of dresses, a fur and leopard print combo, plus an exquisite shot from the new season of The Bridge (the Scandinavian version).

It’s a travesty that Donna LaDonna hasn’t appeared in the spotlight on these pages as she is pretty much The Carrie Diaries fashion MVP. Everything she wears is over the top, but this is the ’80s and we don’t need to see a refrained mean girl. Donna is more than just the cliché queen bee and she instantly makes any scene better. On last Friday’s episode she gave Dorrit some bad advice and yet she more than made up for it by challenging Mouse to beer pong, followed by some drunken spooning. These two characters are my everything (actually I might need to add Walt and Bennett to this list). Donna’s party outfit is made up of a Topshop faux-fur bomber jacket and leopard print dress because of course. Don’t ever change Donna and don’t leave me show.

Jess Day wears super cute dress, not a shocker I know but I’m easing into 2014 and the Kate Spade nautical inspired look on this week’s New Girl is delightful. The tray of frogs is obscuring the oversized belted midsection that cinches the dress in at the waist and the red, white and blue is giving off some springtime feels (considering I’m writing this with a glove on it’s nice to pretend it’s warmer than it is).

Happy 100th episode to Parks and Recreation and while they were over in London shooting the season 6 premiere they hopped across the Channel to Paris to film scenes for this milestone episode. Ben and Leslie are doing the whole tourist thing so a selfie in front of the Arc de Triomphe is forgivable (who am I kidding my Instagram is full of these kinds of shots, sadly not in Paris). Leslie’s mesh patchwork dress from M Missoni uses pattern and color to create an interesting visual; if she wore this in Pawnee it might look out of place, for Paris it is perfect.

On The Bridge Saga Norén favors leather pants and while they might not be the most practical for clambering aboard a vessel, they are as much a part of her as her US counterpart Sonya with her leather jacket. The second season of The Bridge started on BBC4 this week; this stunning shot showcases one of the protagonists and the endless seeming bridge that joins Sweden and Denmark and that gives the show its name. Yes I’ve added Saga’s coat to the covet list. You will be able to watch season 1 of The Bridge on Hulu from January 14 and even if you’ve already watched the FX version it’s worth checking out for the central pairing alone.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

It’s the first “Out of the Box” of 2014 and while the red carpet appearances have dried up over the holiday break, we’ve got promo photo treats for you instead. Award shows will be back in full swing soon, including the Golden Globes next Sunday (also the same night Girls and True Detective premiere) and so expect gowns galore. This week we’re showcasing new Hannibal season 2 cast photos, a returning sleuth and a New Girl flashback.

The official Hannibal Tumblr has been busy over the holiday period releasing character promo shots for the second season (premiering February 28) and we’ve got Hannibal and Alana Bloom to peruse over. This pose is pretty similar to last year’s Hannibal, as is the plaid of the suit and paisley tie. Gone are the blue tones, they have been replaced by darker shades of brown and red. If you click on the photo you can see how much detail there is in Hannibal’s costuming including the polka dots on his pocket square. He is impeccable, which is much more than can be said about Will Graham who is languishing in a less than flattering jumpsuit.

Moving on to the second of the new Hannibal promo shots with Alana Bloom. Green is the color of balance and blue means loyalty; Alana is the only character who has been looking out for Will’s best interests from the pilot episode and so it makes sense for her to be dressed in the colors that represent these two attributes. Last year Alana wore mostly reds and abstract patterns, so it’s notable that the geometric pattern on her skirt is less chaotic. Pattern and color are both important components for the overall design of Hannibal and we will be keeping tabs on how this develops and changes in season 2. For a show that contains so much horror the costuming is exquisite and we’re highly anticipating the new season.

Sherlock is back! Well on the BBC at least (it airs January 19 on PBS) and while we’re not going to discuss the plot details of “The Empty Hearse” as you can see in this promo photo, Sherlock’s magnificent Belstaff ‘Millford’ coat also makes a return. The red button hole is a small touch and yet it’s the one I always notice; thanks to the folks at Wear Sherlock I now know that this detail was added by the Sherlock costume department. It’s a coat that is ingrained with the look of this version of Sherlock Holmes and it plays a part in the dramatic slow-mo this show favors.

It’s Nick Miller as you have never seen him before, looking like an extra from Dead Poets Society. This is a shot from the next episode (airing Tuesday 7) “Clavado En Un Bar” and we’ll be finding out how each character ended up in the job they are in and this means multiple flashbacks. Almost lawyer Nick’s style is lot different from the previous college versions we have seen, gone is the moustache and it’s a clean shaven, slick hair Miller instead. The scarf is the thing that really ties the preppy look together. We will have more New Girl in our review of this episode next week.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week Best of 2013

It’s the final Friday of 2013 and so we’re bringing you a special end of year “Out of the Box.” This was the first article to run on TV Ate My Wardrobe and it’s been a regular weekly column ever since. Costuming, red carpet appearances, street style and magazine shoots have all featured heavily and we went back through the 36 weeks it has been running to see what shows and faces have appeared the most. The only stipulation is that it had to feature as part of this column and so while there have been many exceptional outfits on TV Ate My Wardrobe if it wasn’t part of “Out of the Box” it hasn’t been included.

The categories we are looking at are most featured show, character, person and favorite individual outfit. There’s also a special mention to the only week where a piece of set was included.

Show: Mad Men

Mad Men hasn’t been lavished with as much praise in 2013 as it has in previous years, but one aspect that has remained consistently excellent is the costume design work from Janie Bryant. There are many photos I could have chosen including Peggy’s pantsuit of power (thanks Tom & Lorenzo for that name), Bob Benson’s shorts, Stan’s beard and Sally in plaid. Instead I have gone for this one from “The Flood” with Peggy and Megan in their award show frocks. Both are incredibly striking and Megan’s is very I Dream of Jeannie; as we head towards the ’70s things are getting bolder in fabric and color and even though there’s a clash in pattern between the pair there is warmth between these two characters. This scene takes place just before they find out that Martin Luther King, Jr. has been assassinated and it shows the how far removed these characters are from the civil rights movement.

Character: April Ludgate, Parks and Recreation

April Ludgate (Aubrey Plaza) from Parks and Recreation appeared on the inaugural “Out of the Box” and many weeks since. With April her costuming is colorful and features a variety of patterns and the occasional animal; it’s mostly casual wear and unlike a character like Olivia Pope it’s a wardrobe that can be recreated with affordable clothes. I’m still on the hunt for the elusive perfect mustard yellow hoodie like the one in the shot above from the season 6 premiere. 2014 will be my year to find one.

Set: Hannibal “Sorbet”

The costuming on Hannibal has been much talked about here at TV Ate My Wardrobe; it’s also the only set design that has appeared on “Out of the Box.” When I wrote the original post I had yet to see The Shining and I am happy to say that this is no longer the case (I watched it after having a wisdom tooth out which was a tad surreal). This exquisite set is an homage to the bathroom in Room 237 in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Hannibal is one of the most visually arresting shows of 2013 and it’s why it deserves this special mention.

Person: Kerry Washington

This has been the year of Kerry Washington as she has dominated Scandal, magazine covers and best dressed lists; she is also the person who has featured the most on “Out of the Box.” Flare is one of the many magazines Washington covered this year (Elle, Essence, Variety, Vanity Fair and Glamour are some of the others) and this is my favorite cover shot. The polka dot Miu Miu coat and scarf have been everywhere this year and for me it is most memorable on Kerry Washington. Versatile style is something Washington has and she’s daring with her choices on the red carpet. While you can pretty much predict what some people will wear every time they hit an event, with Kerry Washington you can never been sure and it’s one of the many reasons why we love to write about her.

Favorite Individual Outfit: Darby Stanchfield at the ABC Disney TCA Party

There are many incredible outfits that have appeared on these pages and so it was tough to highlight just one; I’m going to stick to the Scandal track and go with Darby Stanchfield from an event back in August. This was before we got to see Abby’s season 3 transformation and so the wavy, wilder looking hair was a big departure from the poker straight style we were used to seeing on Stanchfield and so she instantly caught our attention. Stanchfield takes the prize of favorite individual outfit in a jacquard floral-print pleated skirt by Alexa von Canisius that cinches in at the waist and the green metallic tone complements her raven locks.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

‘Tis the season to wear sparkly frocks and after the LBD heavy edition a couple of weeks ago we’re injecting a bit of color and bold patterns into this column.

After seeing the new Hobbit movie this week Kate Mara’s J. Mendel dress is giving off elf vibes thanks to two tiered metallic green and ivory leaf detail. Festive feelings are enhanced by the beautiful gold clutch and yet it doesn’t come across as attempting to be all that Christmassy. I still haven’t seen House of Cards (or OITNB, or Arrested Development even though I have Netflix *sigh*) and considering how divisive it has been it’s on my long list of catch-up projects.

Kiernan Shipka’s red carpet style has been consistent in its excellence this year (and yes I’m fine that a 14 year-old has way better clothes than me) and this week she looks delightful in RED Valentino. The floral/polka dot crossover is something I raved about with Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2014 collection and this take on it is super cute. One reason why Shipka’s red carpet style is so good is because she dresses for her age and I hope this continues in 2014.

Maybe it’s the time of year and if Amy Poehler wore this in April it would look like a regular dress, as it’s December I’m seeing ‘an angel at the top of the tree’ frock. Now that I’ve written this it sounds bad, far from it and the puff sleeves/A-line design is what’s reading angel to me. It’s icy looking and the black pattern adds to the winter wonderland feel of this Alice + Oliva dress. The bold lipstick is the pop of color this outfit needs.

The series finale date has been set for How I Met Your Mother (March 31) and I soured on this show long before Cristin Milioti was revealed to be the mother. That doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate this Peter Pilotto creation and I might have to include it in the superhero couture that began with Olivia Pope’s Rubin Singer gown on Scandal earlier this season. This might have something to do with Milioti’s red carpet pose and it’s definitely one of the most visually arresting dresses I have seen this year. As a very tenuous link and because we said goodbye to 30 Rock this year here is Milioti in one of my favorite episodes (“TGS Hates Women”).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

It’s another red carpet and public appearance heavy week for Out of the Box as award shows continue to roll by. We also have a fabulous magazine cover featuring two of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s favorite ladies and some outerwear delights courtesy of Mr Porter and a Downton Abbey star.

It’s been a while since I last bought a copy of Entertainment Weekly, that all changes this week as Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are covering and guest editing this week’s issue. The pair are presenting their second consecutive Golden Globe awards and they were easily the highlight of last year’s ceremony. It’s a fun cover (though Amy’s pen did look like a pregnancy test upon first glance, which would have been a bizarre concept choice) and I really like the button/zip details on both of their dresses. No matter who wins (and I have OPINIONS when it comes to the nominations, including yay Amy and Parks!) at least we will have their opening monologue. This is also Amy Poehler’s second magazine cover this week and she looks super awesome (standard) on the cover of Paper.

One surprising omission from the lead female in a drama category is Claire Danes – SO happy for Tatiana Maslany though – and both Homeland and Mad Men have fallen out of favor with the HFPA. Danes has spent this week at a variety of Nobel Peace Prize events in Norway and she looks stunning in this Valentino floral macramé gown. It’s a beautiful dress for this concert event and toning down her hair and makeup makes sense as the multi-color pattern is already incredibly bold. Danes might not have got a Globes nod, but is still looks like she’s had a good week. It’s not all snubs as she received a SAG nomination.

In contrast to Claire Danes’ embellished frock is Fresh Meat’s Zawe Ashton and she attended the British Independent Film Awards in this simple, yet elegant Sarah Baadarani crew neck dove grey gown. While I would have probably gone for a strong lip color, the fresh faced no fuss look works on this occasion. It’s a very striking outfit even against a similarly toned background.

Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery wore the most exquisite Erdem check and floral coat on Good Morning America this week and it looks like it was needed in that weather. The hint of the orange Carven skirt and white pumps gives a pop of color that complements the strong design of the outerwear. This gets added to the coat covet list (which currently stands at approximately 78 different pieces).

Serving up model realness and more coat delights is Zachary Quinto for Mr Porter. This is from Burberry Prorsum and it is magnificent. The TV Ate My Wardrobe list includes dudes attire so we just hit number 79.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

‘Tis the season for all of those end of year musings and the start of the many award shows between now and the Oscars. “Out of the Box” is taking a look at the red carpet offerings from this week, in what I should imagine will be the first of many award show fashion posts in the coming months. While I might normally moan about the absence of color, as it’s heading towards the holiday season the variety of twists on the LBD is more than acceptable.

There is so much to say about this group shot from the Gotham Independent Film Awards and bullet points seem like the best way forward:

Michael B. Jordan has been killing it on the red carpet all year and I’m so happy to see him getting so much recognition; he picked up Breakthrough Actor for Fruitvale Station at this awards show.
Rashida Jones has filmed her last Parks and Recreation episode which is giving me all the Leslie and Ann related sads, but yay for real life friendship.
Also Amy Poehler looks stunning in a leather shouldered Catherine Deane dress. And yes I’m totally digging her real life romance with Nick Kroll who hosted the Gotham Awards. Will ‘The Douche’ make an appearance this season?
Oh hey, Jordan Catalano’s hair is super long and I kind of like it. While my teen crush on Jared Leto has all but gone I am looking forward to seeing Dallas Buyers Club and the inevitable reunion with Claire Danes at the Golden Globes. This needs to happen.

At the same event Girls star Zosia Mamet looks super cute in a Rebecca Minkoff black mini jersey dress. Mamet’s red carpet face tends to give off an air of boredom, not on this occasion where she looks super smiley and comfortable. I’m also very much in love with her chunky buckled black shoes and while I don’t tend to be a heel wearer, I’m definitely coveting this pair.

This is how you do winter floral and The Tunnel star Clémence Poésy accompanies designer Erdem to the British Fashion Awards – he picked up the Red Carpet Award – and Poésy shows just why he won, as she’s rocking an Erdem creation. While I haven’t been loving the sheer trend overall (see every Dior gown Jennifer Lawrence wore for the Catching Fire press tour), Erdem has used this technique well and one of my favorite looks at the Met Gala earlier this year was Lena Dunham in Erdem.

It’s been a big week for Julianna Margulies as The Good Wife celebrated 100 episodes and she looks stunning in Pamella Roland at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Gala dinner. The contrasting element of the crisscross bodice with the full skirt (with bonus pockets!) is elegant and adds fun twist on the monochrome trend that has been big this year. I’d maybe like to see a crimson lip tone, but other than that this is a great look for the Good Wife star.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

Costumes and red carpet appearances all feature on this week’s edition of “Out of the Box” and include 19th century dueling attire, pajamas, sweaters and houndstooth. I did want to talk about something from the Boardwalk Empire season finale, but as this blog doesn’t have page breaks there’s no way to conceal this very spoilery image (click on the link to see the shot). Suffice to say it is a stunningly executed scene and one that makes my heart ache.

Flashback time on The Originals and Elijah’s hunter green dueling costume complete with tailcoat, pantaloons, cravat and leather knee high boots is an impressive look. There’s not a bad wig in sight (Klaus also looks rather dashing in his waistcoat), something the flashback scenes occasionally suffer from. The Originals has impressed me so far this season as we learn more about the perceived cycle of betrayal that Klaus thinks he is experiencing as he continues his constant quest for loyalty – he had it from his siblings, but he’s treated them in such a way that they can no longer stand by him. This is A+ costuming work from Jennifer Bryan.

Moving on to the present and another superb pajama set from Jess on New Girl. These ones are custom made and you can get the bicycle pictured material here if you fancy making your own (thanks Worn on TV for the heads up). Jess’ pajama collection is pretty immense and while most of the sets tend to come from Victoria’s Secret (unlike the models Jess tends to button hers up), having a few that are one of a kind injects originality into the mix.

It’s been a big week for sweaters here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and Gina from Brooklyn Nine-Nine has already featured on the wish list for a sweater she wore earlier this season. Wearing a Marc by Marc Jacobs sweater on this week’s Thanksgiving themed episode, Gina takes a place on the “Out of the Box” list as this jungle green (yeah it looks blue to me) patterned piece is a delight. As is the high horse that Gina is riding out on in this scene. The ‘Luna’ sweater is currently at sale price here.

My current hankering for all the toothed patterned clothing – puppy, dog and hound – means that Lizzy Caplan’s double houndstooth print by Reem Acra is a sight to behold. The gold waistband helps to break up the contrasting, yet similar prints and this is brilliantly bold look. Caplan’s is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite and she is willing to mix things up on the red carpet and step out of the safe zone, it doesn’t always work but on this occasion it is terrific and we applaud her for it. Plus she has been a complete charmer on Masters of Sex this season.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

It’s all about the color red on this edition of “Out of the Box” as both costuming on TV shows and public appearances have been hit by scarlet fever and as December is fast approaching (shh we have started our gift buying yet) we thought it was time to get into the festive spirit. Not that any of these outfits are celebrating the holidays, instead we have the uniform of the enemy, more coat envy, the launch of a new Banana Republic line and a bold red carpet statement.

First up it’s those pesky Hessian riders on Sleepy Hollow and their uniform is made all the more menacing by their black masks (no there isn’t an Eyes Wide Shut party around the corner). The masks have a slight beaked quality and while they’re not as severe as the plague doctor masks it’s an incredibly unnerving look. In this week’s Sleepy Hollow we found out the original identity of the Headless Horseman; he’s Ichabod’s former BFF Abraham. Abraham was engaged to Katrina and well we all know who she ended up marrying. This development was unexpected and Abraham’s transformation involved not only offering up his soul but shedding everything about his appearance. Red is seldom used as a clothing choice outside of these flashbacks with Abbie and Ichabod sticking to blues, greys and blacks. This makes it instantly identifiable with being the color of the enemy.

I’ve already discussed Jess’ red coat from this week’s New Girl and Mindy’s Smythe red floral brocade affair is yet another excellent outerwear offering. Mindy’s wardrobe is full of bright and bold pieces like this and costume designer Salvador Perez often puts Mindy in a variety of colors and textures. This ensemble includes two different monochromatic patterns (hearts and houndstooth) that shouldn’t go together with this crimson coat, but do. The red helps Mindy stand out in the sea of darker coat colors.

Christina Hendricks and Jessica Paré both shine in red tones at the launch party celebrating the new L’Wren Scott Collection for Banana Republic. While I would have preferred to see them without the draped sparkly cardigans and together they look super matchy-matchy, I do like the ruffled blouse with the fitted skirts (especially Paré’s combination).

Now here’s how you wear a red suit and matching shoes, while we wouldn’t recommend this look for everyone, it suits Alan Cumming’s daring style. It’s a big contrast to the grey suit stylings of Eli Gold on The Good Wife and Cumming likes to have fun with fashion when he hits the red carpet. It’s a really well tailored suit and it fits him perfectly.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

Party season has started and this is a red carpet focused “Look of the Week” as one show celebrate its 100th episode, both women and men are celebrated by Glamour magazine and GQ as everyone begins there “who was awesome in 2013” lists. This year has flown by and this in now the 31st edition of “Out of the Box.”

The Vampire Diaries celebrated filming their 100th episode at the weekend and Nina Dobrev looked stunning in a super colorful Naeem Khan dress. It’s a bold, super short affair and this is the perfect kind of dress for a celebration like this as it’s not something that requires a fancy floor length gown. When a dress has what can be best described as mythical looking My Little Pony pictures on it and looks this awesome you know we’ve got an instant win.

America Ferrera has opted for the more traditional LBD at the 2013 Glamour Women of the Year Awards and while I would have probably opted for a bolder shoe color, it’s a great look. This is also the perfect excuse to talk about Ferrera returning to The Good Wife this weekend. We haven’t seen Ferrera’s character Natalie Flores since season 2 and while I can’t remember all the details as to why she left in the first place, I do know that Eli has a thing for her and a flustered Eli is the best kind.

It’s been a good year for Darby Stanchfield as she’s had an endless stream of red carpet hits as well as an excellent on screen fashion transformation on Scandal this season. Stanchfield looks fantastic at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in an Emilio de la Morena gown that is a little different. It’s a dress of two halves with a lacquered-bodice giving it a super sexy edgy feel that is complimented by the demure skirt in a slightly lighter burgundy shade. Pairing gold strappy heels with a gold and green clutch adds a flash of fancy to the look without overwhelming it. Stanchfield has ditched the heavy eyeliner and curly hair that Abby has been favoring this season and has instead gone for a simple hair and fresh faced approach. Stanchfield’s hair still stands out even in this slicked back style and her raven locks are the perfect color for this dress.

It’s unusual for Vanessa Hudgens to feature on these pages as her usual style is a little bit too boho chic for me (and there is often some form of crochet) but this Thakoon number is delightful as is her date Austin Butler. Yes there is still a lot of love for The Carrie Diaries around these parts and he’s pulling off the perfect date attire at the CFDA and Vogue 2013 Fashion Fund Finalists Celebration.

This edition of “Out of the Box” is looking at moments that stood out visually on this week’s episodes of Sleepy Hollow and Boardwalk Empire. We’re also showcasing some behind the scenes shots from New Girl and The Carrie Diaries.

After a three week break Sleepy Hollow is back! It returns with its strongest episode yet, filling in the details of how Ichabod switched sides in the Revolutionary War, introducing Fringe’s John Noble and inducing the misty eyes in a rather touching scene. Abbie doesn’t want to lose Ichabod because everyone she has ever felt a connection with leaves and she’s not ready to say goodbye, even if he believes he is living on borrowed time. They are a mismatched pair but this is part of the charm and it’s one of the reasons why each episode has been a joy to watch. Their obvious differences are evident in the shot above as Ichabod continues to wear his period garb and Abbie is very much of this time. Abbie’s off-duty wear isn’t particularly flashy, they’re at a baseball game so it’s casual and I can’t see Abbie being that much of a clothes horse (not that she doesn’t look good).

Multiple flashbacks mean Ichabod in uniform and this time the red coat variety. He looks pensive here and his conflict between what is right and the country he serves is evident early on. Ichabod is a man of honor and this is reflected in the way he holds himself in both the past and present. He looks less disheveled in these flashbacks, spending 200 years buried below ground has a habit of messing with your fresh faced and chipper complexion.

This is a bonus Sleepy Hollow shot because I’m so glad it is back and this scene gave me all the feelings. Nicole Beharie does an excellent crumple chin that is Claire Danes Hall of Fame worthy and the chemistry between Beharie and Tom Mison is palpable. In a show that is so much about good and evil, it’s not surprising to have scenes containing strong light sources.

Moving onto Boardwalk Empire and another scene that features a distinctive light source; the framing of this shot is exquisite as Richard Harrow waits to marry Julia . It’s a marriage of convenience in one respect, which is why there is no fanfare and they sit quietly waiting for the office to open. The proposal itself is non traditional as Richard would never consider himself a worthy suitor and so Julia has to do the asking telling him “You might do in a pinch.” They’re doing this for the sake of Tommy; a child whose parents are both dead and whose grandmother’s care would almost certainly be detrimental to the boy. He’s already witnessed too much as it is. It’s not a loveless union and you can tell from the way they are sitting with each other that there is something more to this marriage than duty. They are both in their Sunday best and Richard’s buttonhole flower is a subtle touch to distinguish this from the suits he normally wears.

Changing direction completely with this photo from Zooey Deschanel’s Instagram that celebrates the return of Damon Wayans Jr. to New Girl. It was also announced on Wednesday that Wayans Jr. will be sticking around for the rest of the season and while they still have much to do in terms of fleshing out this character, I’m excited about what this addition will bring to the various dynamics on this show. This season has had some issues in terms of Schmidt and structure and I think the presence of Coach could help revitalize New Girl.

If you aren’t all watching The Carrie Diaries (and from the ratings I’m sensing not a lot of you are) here is one (or two) obvious reason to start watching. Plus it’s a totally charming and fun show beyond just the guys and puppies.
