Best of the Creative Arts Emmys Red Carpet

13 Sep

The Emmys like to start early dishing out their Creative Arts awards prior to the big show next weekend. This includes costume design, guest star, production design, theme music and the red carpet delivers some fun and stunning looks. The Creative Arts Emmys will air on Saturday, September 19 on FXX and the full list of winners can be found here.

Mindy Kaling EmmysMindy Kaling has a very busy week ahead of here with season 4 of The Mindy Project and her new book Why Not Me? coming out/airing on Tuesday. Double press duty ahoy. Mindy also had double Saturday event attending with the Creative Art Emmys and The Mindy Project premiere party (more on that later) and she wore a stunning custom made Salvador Perez gown to her first soiree. Perez is the costume designer on The Mindy Project and was nominated (sadly he didn’t win), but Kaling showcases his work in stunning style. The cape is everything and gives me Lupita at the Golden Globes feels.

Mae WhitmanA really funky take from Mae Whitman wearing floral Alice + Olivia.

Rachel BrosnahanA simple, but elegant white gown from House of Card’s nominee Rachel Brosnahan. Could maybe do with a bold red lip color.

Nina DobrevSomething a little different from Nina Dobrev in Mugler, but it is her Sophia Webster ‘Poppy’ sandals which have really caught my eye.

Joanna SotomuraEmma Approved’s Joanna Sotomura wore a pleated and embellished bodice gown going full ethereal beauty. I still really need to see Emma Approved and not just because my name is in the title.

Katharine McPheeAnother beaded stunner with Katharine McPhee in Naeem Khan.

Key and PeeleEntering the pairs posing section of the red carpet and kicking off with guys in a suits; oh hey Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. That is one big bow tie.

Chelsea Peretti and Jordan PeeleMore dashing Jordan Peele and this coupling still makes me very happy as does Chelsea Peretti’s Lublu Kira Plastinina gown.

Constance Zimmer and Shiri ApplebyUnREAL is the show of the summer and this is one onscreen pairing I would like to see so much more of. Yes I have thoughts about Shiri Appleby’s super high split (which would work so much better without the gun holster looking element), but her earrings are fantastic and the thought of heels at the best of times makes my feet instantly hurt. I also love the monochrome thing they’ve got going on with each other and Constance Zimmer’s dress is simple chic.

Kathryn Hahn and Jill SolowayTransparent took home a whole bunch of awards (including the theme music which makes my heart ache and full of so much joy every time I hear it) and I am so here for Kathryn Hahn’s dress which in itself is making my heart ache as it reminds me of wallpaper in my grandpa’s old house. Gonna give Jill Soloway the polka dot points just because.

Margo MartindaleRounding things off with one of the winners and Margo Martindale patterned jacket is rather fabulous as is the fact that The Americans is now an Emmy winner. However it would be nice if they could recognize far more than just the person who was in one scene, but hey it is a start.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

20 May

The first half of this week’s Behind the Insta-Scenes is pretty much a game of spot the CW star unleashing a whole world of even more crossover potential if these photos are anything to go by. Plus saying goodbye to Mad Men and spending more time with the cast who are dominating behind the scenes shenanigans at the moment.

First up ‘How many CW actors can you fit in one selfie?’ courtesy of Arrow’s Emily Bett Rickards. Cute bow tie, Carlos Valdes.

Followed by ‘How many CW stars can you fit in an elevator?’ selfie thanks to Paul Blackthorne (Team Arrow cast is killing it with these group shots).

An almost all Jane the Virgin cast with another group photo taking place in the background; stacks and stacks of selfies. Definitely into Jaime Camil’s glasses, however I have a feeling Rogelio would not feel the same way.

The crossovers continue on board the plane with Grant Gustin taking a peak at Jane the Virgin’s Brett Dier from a few rows back.

And while I recover from the emotionally draining and brilliant Flash finale here is a very cute outtake from the recent Variety issue.

I adore Petra on Jane the Virgin so let’s continue the CW love with this very comfy looking yellow rug and Yael Grobglas.

And one cake covered last night of shooting for a CW star as Nina Dobrev departs The Vampire Diaries.

After I watched the Mad Men series finale this made me cry. It’s been an emotional week (yes it’s only Wednesday).

Peggy and Stan Forever:)

In so much agreement with this and Peggy’s ending made me very happy.

Photographer Lisa Guerriero shares some shots from the Mad Men set including this close up of Peggy’s plaid and polka dots. This was a repeat season 7 outfit; Peggy wore it when Joan gave the best answer to a lunch question and alone in the office when she spilled coffee all over the floor.

Also from Lisa Guerriero (whose work we also featured here) and a sneak look at break time activities.

The You’re the Worst cast continue to be the best at this including Huey Lewis and the News serenading.

Alan Cumming lops off his Eli Gold locks as a way to mark the end of the current Good Wife season.

Coachella style has a tendency to make my eyes hurt (far too much fringe) and Hannah Simone’s outfit is a pretty delight in a sea of “WHY?”

Very misty looking eyes on Nina Dobrev’s last day and the cast of The Vampire Diaries has done a thorough job of documenting this big departure.

As is the tradition when I watch Game of Thrones let it be known that I just yelled ‘wolfie’ at the screen.

While I’m talking GoT here is one new cast member I can’t wait to see appear and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen is a TV Ate My Wardrobe favorite from her role on Borgen. Very into her super 70s looking dress and excellent Iron Throne poise.

Orange is the New Black cast adorableness on the streets of Paris. And Netflix released the S3 trailer this week and it looks set to be another very funny/emotionally draining season.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 Nov

Party season has started and this is a red carpet focused “Look of the Week” as one show celebrate its 100th episode, both women and men are celebrated by Glamour magazine and GQ as everyone begins there “who was awesome in 2013” lists. This year has flown by and this in now the 31st edition of “Out of the Box.”

Nina Dobrev Naeem KhanThe Vampire Diaries celebrated filming their 100th episode at the weekend and Nina Dobrev looked stunning in a super colorful Naeem Khan dress. It’s a bold, super short affair and this is the perfect kind of dress for a celebration like this as it’s not something that requires a fancy floor length gown. When a dress has what can be best described as mythical looking My Little Pony pictures on it and looks this awesome you know we’ve got an instant win.

America Ferrera Glamour awardsAmerica Ferrera has opted for the more traditional LBD at the 2013 Glamour Women of the Year Awards and while I would have probably opted for a bolder shoe color, it’s a great look. This is also the perfect excuse to talk about Ferrera returning to The Good Wife this weekend. We haven’t seen Ferrera’s character Natalie Flores since season 2 and while I can’t remember all the details as to why she left in the first place, I do know that Eli has a thing for her and a flustered Eli is the best kind.

Darby StanchfieldIt’s been a good year for Darby Stanchfield as she’s had an endless stream of red carpet hits as well as an excellent on screen fashion transformation on Scandal this season. Stanchfield looks fantastic at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in an Emilio de la Morena gown that is a little different. It’s a dress of two halves with a lacquered-bodice giving it a super sexy edgy feel that is complimented by the demure skirt in a slightly lighter burgundy shade. Pairing gold strappy heels with a gold and green clutch adds a flash of fancy to the look without overwhelming it. Stanchfield has ditched the heavy eyeliner and curly hair that Abby has been favoring this season and has instead gone for a simple hair and fresh faced approach. Stanchfield’s hair still stands out even in this slicked back style and her raven locks are the perfect color for this dress.

Austin Butler and Vanessa Hudgens

It’s unusual for Vanessa Hudgens to feature on these pages as her usual style is a little bit too boho chic for me (and there is often some form of crochet) but this Thakoon number is delightful as is her date Austin Butler. Yes there is still a lot of love for The Carrie Diaries around these parts and he’s pulling off the perfect date attire at the CFDA and Vogue 2013 Fashion Fund Finalists Celebration.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

17 May

It’s that time of year when most shows are ending the season and so this edition of “Look of the Week” is focusing on the season finales of three shows. As always this is a snapshot of what I have been watching and each pick is for a variety of reasons including; what it adds to the storyline, what it tells us about the characters involved or simply because it looks good. Narrowly missing a place on this week’s list is Mad Men which featured the stunning costuming that we expect from this show, but it didn’t fit in with the finale theme. After last week’s foray into set design this week is returning to the clothes that people wear, but don’t be surprised if locations pop up again (particularly from a show like Hannibal).

Winner: Mindy Lahiri on The Mindy Project “Take Me With You”

Mindy short hairI wrote earlier in the week about The Mindy Project producing stronger episodes over the second half of the season and a lot of this is thanks to Mindy’s friendship with Danny; Mindy Kaling and Chris Messina have terrific chemistry. The last scene in the finale pushes them further into the ‘will they/won’t they territory’ which will certainly change their dynamic on the show. This comes directly after Danny pulls the old playground move by telling Mindy how much he dislikes her new hair (and he notes that they are now matching). What follows is a moment that made me hold my breath as he took of her glasses to clean them (I have short hair and wear glasses so this scene is extra swoon worthy). Mindy has made no attempt to hide that she cares about how she looks and so cutting her hair off (which I know is a wig really, but she looks cute) is her grand romantic gesture for Casey and it works. Mindy also shows off her professional skills (the inclusion of M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” echo the pilot) and some of this season’s best moments have been when Mindy is using her medical expertise (“Teen Patient” springs to mind). Mindy is a someone whose wardrobe I tend to covert, but it’s this drastic haircut that works as Mindy’s boombox over the head and gives Mindy the number one spot this week.

Runner Up: Cece on New Girl “Elaine’s Big Day”

NewGirl-Ep255_ElaineBigDay-Sc26_00409Cece managed to get rid of her accidental henna beard and unsurprisingly she looked stunning as she walked down the aisle in a lehenga choli (a traditional Indian wedding gown). New Girl costume designer Deb McGuire tells InStyle this was one of four options and when Hannah Simone put this one on first “it took our breath away. We didn’t even attempt to consider the others!” This is a very colorful wedding and New Girl tends to have a very bright color palette; Jess’ blue sari (which you can see here) fits in with this motif and allowed her to stand out against the orange backdrop. Bonus points go to Nick Miller for carrying Jess’ pink purse and being comfortable with this look.

Runner Up: Caroline Forbes, Elena Gilbert, Bonnie Bennett on The Vampire Diaries “Graduation”

TVD graduationIt’s not easy to graduate from high school in a town that is full of supernatural beings and Caroline, Elena and Bonnie successfully manage this achievement on the season 4 finale of The Vampire Diaries. The main snag is that all three are dead in one way or another; Caroline and Elena are both vampires and Bonnie is now a ghost. Caroline and Elena are blissfully unaware of Bonnie’s demise and thanks to some nifty magic Bonnie has the appearance of someone who is very much alive. Considering how much these three women have been through this season it was good to have this moment of happiness together, even if it is tinged with sadness (the Olivia Broadfield track “Gone” that accompanied the ceremony reminds me of a more melancholy “Sway” by Bic Runga) and the screen got a little blurry. This episode also demonstrated that a mortarboard can be more than just as a graduation accessory as Klaus made a rather dramatic and deadly entrance using one. It was pretty awesome.

What is your look of the week?
