Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

10 Jun

If we were giving out an award for Best Cast on Instagram it would probably be a two-way split between Orange is the New Black and You’re the Worst; this week’s Behind the Insta-Scenes is dominated by these two shows. Plus a few other treats including the return of a Very Important show.

Orange is the New Black is back on Friday (two days to go!) and some of the cast were in Paris last week to promote the new season. Going full tourist in this beautiful shot with blue skies, pretty dresses and the Eiffel Tower.

Followed by a trip across the ocean to Brazil and Uzo Aduba was joined by Natasha Lyonne and Samira Wiley on the Netflix float at the Brazil Pride Parade. Excellent sunglasses and houndstooth action. Plus plenty of dancing I’m sure.

Post Pride bathroom selfie game is strong.

Gathering a whole host of supporting actors as part of The Hollywood Reporter’s Emmy season and Danielle Brooks gets the best shenanigans partner in Empire’s Jussie Smollett. Work that green feather boa. And I’m totally feeling the beardy snarl face.

Well isn’t this the most adorable?!

We are entering the ATX Television Festival portion of this week’s highlights and the You’re the Worst team documented their time so well that I found it hard to whittle down which photos to use.

The new ‘squeezing as many people into an elevator’ selfie option. Just look down.

“Fan girling the fuck out on her” sounds very appropriate in this situation. Also Adrianne Palicki is tall.

#SquadGoals

Creator Stephen Falk gives a good array of shots from the event including Kether Donohue’s cute yellow dress. Despite there being no barbecue photos in this collection just the mention gives me an instant craving.

This is also a very appropriate reaction from Mae Whitman. I would have zero chill in this situation.

The revival of The X-Files in the Instagram age is pretty much the ideal. See also Tumblr which is already delivering with the spoilery filming photos which I can’t resist looking at (click if you dare).

A good portion of my Instagrams are around this theme (TV watching/booze) so I am taking Diane Kruger’s Tony watching prep as a ‘stars – they’re just like us’ moment.

Masters of Sex Season 3 Artwork and Previews: “We are the Sexual Revolution”

9 Jun

We have spent a lot of time with Bill Masters and Virginia Johnson on Masters of Sex as they conduct their study, but what happens when their work is released on a wide scale? This is what season 3 will be exploring as the show jumps forward to the mid sixties (season 2 ended in January 1961) including a lot of negative reactions from the general public to their controversial work.

The professional and private relationships are just as complementary and contradictory as they have ever been and the marriage between Libby and Bill still reads as fraught. The idea of their being three in this marriage is heightened in both the poster and preview with Libby going so far as kissing Virginia to see what it is like.

Masters of Sex S3Previous artwork has focused solely on Bill and Virginia so Libby inclusion here is significant and they’ve moved away from the buttoned up look of season 1 and the undressed nature of last year’s shots to this fun game of Twister coupled with a Beatles song that doubles a sex pun. Yes I giggled. The interesting thing about this poster is Libby’s position; as while she is featured she is very much off to the side and wearing neutral tones. The bold pink of the dot matches Bill’s undone bow tie (suggesting he has maybe relaxed a little), Virginia’s lipstick and the stitching on her button holes – those giant buttons are A+ and I hope she wears this dress on the show – which unites these two characters.

The costume design on Masters of Sex provides plenty of discourse here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and I am already clapping my hands with glee at this time jump. This is why I present to you shots of costumes that I cannot wait to see in the context of an episode.

IMG_0803Patterned scarf! And you know, more buttons.

IMG_0806So here for Libby’s cream cable knit and pants look. She’s also perfected the whole quiet seething while smoking thing.

IMG_0807Betty has always been the pattern queen so mid sixties fashion is going to be ideal for her.

IMG_0808I also have strong feelings about this yellow outfit.

Watch the promo and a behind the scenes preview below to get a glimpse of what season 3 has to offer. Oh hey Josh Charles! Or should I call you the Perfume King?

Masters of Sex returns Sunday, July 12.

Best of the 2015 Tony Awards Red Carpet

8 Jun

The Tony Awards red carpet was awash with color and print with some stunning frocks on display from nominees, presenters and attendees. Here are our favorites of the night.

Elisabeth MossElisabeth Moss is radiant in floral Oscar de la Renta wisely ditching the white belt from the original and adding extra color with her lipstick choice.

Vanessa HudgensThis is very much a summer awards show and Vanessa Hudgens is very on point in Naeem Khan with the gorgeous flower print and halter silhouette. Hudgens has been a pleasantly surprising sartorial force this year.

Patricia ClarksonRed roses for Patricia Clarkson in Alexander McQueen continuing the print theme and Clarkson is always a delight.

Emily SkeggsA dramatic and beautiful gown for Emily Skeggs with a hint of Carey Mulligan about her. And while Skeggs didn’t win in her category, it was a good night for Fun Home winning 5 awards.

Jennifer LopezJennifer Lopez delivers full elegant starry eyed drama in Valentino Couture.

Ruth WilsonMoving into the block color portion of the red carpet and I keep going back on forth on Ruth Wilson’s fuchsia Ralph Lauren frock. It’s the drop waist which is confusing matters and I’m still not over how much she made me like culottes last week. Very into the clashing lip color with the bold pink.

Annaleigh AshfordI adore Annaleigh Ashford as Betty in Masters of Sex and she won Best Featured Actress in a Play for You Can’t Take it With You (beating out my other fave Patricia Clarkson). Ashford stands out in a green Zac Posen frock with a dramatic bustier top and all important pockets.

Anna ChlumskySimple and chic from Anna Chlumsky in Sophie Theallet.

Bobby Cannavale and Rose ByrneHaving quite the Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale week after seeing Danny Collins and Spy. Byrne is a regular on TV Ate My Wardrobe and she tends to take a lot of red carpet risks including this amazing plunging crimson Delpozo dress with Cannavale looking dashing in Brooks Brothers.

Patina MillerPrevious Tony winner Patina Miller looks divine in Jason Wu showing how to red carpet flats and killing it with her accessory choices.

Judith LightYas Kween!

Hannibal’s European Vacation: Why so Blue, Bedelia?

5 Jun

“You seem more interested in making appearances than maintaining them.”

Morality, ethics and aesthetics are all covered in the first back and forth between Hannibal and Bedelia in the season 3 premiere of Hannibal, which takes place after a decadent party and Hannibal flexing his prowess through Dante and dance. Appearances are important and maintaining his cover seems like less of a concern when measuring egos and playing a game of cat and mouse with whatever person lies before him. These encounters include talk of fairy tales – Hannibal lives on the opposite end of the fantastical spectrum which Pushing Daisies also inhabits – playing the game of ‘how many times can you say ‘bonsoir’ before you kill someone?’ or giving a dinner guest delicacies to make them taste better.

Willing participants are hard to find and part of this season opener starts to explore why Bedelia is Hannibal’s European vacation (can it still be called a vacation if you are technically on the run?) partner and what her motivations are.

Hannibal 3.01 Bedelia in blueProfessional curiosity is a term which has been used on Hannibal in the past including Alana citing this as reason why she couldn’t get romantically involved with Will Graham back in season 1 as she didn’t think she would be able to stop analyzing him. Curiosity is also something Bedelia cites on several occasions and it is like she hasn’t heard the well known phrase involving a feline. When it comes to making appearances Bedelia stands out in a crowd and the blue ensemble which I have been clamoring to see within the context of an episode was unveiled in “Antipasto” and it resembles the most incognito spy from the 1940s. Covert is not a word either Bedelia or Hannibal are considering when picking out their attire first thing in the morning and they are sartorially suited to each other.

Hannibal 3.01 policemanOther than the carousel which lights up the shot, Bedelia is the only one wearing color in the square full of people with the local policeman taking note of her in a big way. He isn’t suspicious and instead gives her a flirtatious salute; he is not going to forget the woman in blue.

Hannibal 3.01 eye Hannibal 3.01 CCTVBedelia is also caught on camera and this one seems kind of deliberate as she stares directly at the CCTV ‘eye’ while she is at the train station. Being enveloped in Hannibal’s world limits escape options as we witnessed in the house of horrors at the end of last season and everyone who came at Hannibal in his home were left broken and bleeding. Bedelia wants to flee attempting to do so later in the episode, but her curiosity coupled with her darkness that Hannibal has tapped into gives her a reason to stay. Even if she knows that ultimately she will end up on Hannibal’s plate.

Hannibal 3.01 Bedelia in goldBathed in gold light in this twisted fairy tale life and coming home from the ball temporarily breaks the spell; giving Bedelia the opportunity to question Hannibal’s motives. Despite the warm light there is something incredibly icy in this scene as both circle around the other talking as if they are still in a therapy session. At the same time there is an intimacy which is evident in the way Bedelia asks him to unzip her dress (the same dress from these stunning promo photos).

Flashbacks reveal how Hannibal and Bedelia ended up on the plane together as her residence is where he cleaned off Will, Abigail and Jack’s blood. Hannibal is all about equal opportunities bathing and Bedelia had the opportunity to end it all when she pointed her gun at him as he stood their naked; instead she went for option number two with a fun packed trip to Europe. The why of this comes from the other jump into the past and the aftermath of her patient attack and subsequent murder (oh hey Zachary Quinto!) with Hannibal’s manipulation going according to schedule. He wipes her bloody brow and gets her to ask for his help while unlocking the darkness in her.

Hannibal 3.01 showerThese revelations come after the bath of sinking into the depths and water is hugely symbolic on Hannibal. Will Graham’s ‘mind palace’ fishing sessions rest on water as cleansing and calming, but water also signifies how something can envelope. As Bedelia drifts down she is doing so out of choice and at this point she is a willing participant, well as willing as you can be with Hannibal who is a master manipulator like no other.

Hannibal 3.01 Bedelia bathIt is important that we can still see her in this shot as it represents some level of choice in how she floats downwards. The look of Hannibal is unlike any other show on TV and as Bedelia lets go she is lit up as if she is a figure on a renaissance painting and the light of heaven shines on her as she sinks into hell. Considering this is on network TV I am surprised to see something like this get through S&P, but maybe the ethereal atmosphere somehow trumps nudity (nipples have been erased/are not free on this occasion).

Hannibal 3.01 Bedelia bath drifting

Yes she pulls out of the water with a shocked look on her face and it is this part of Bedelia that chooses to flee from Hannibal; albeit an unsuccessful attempt as she gets splattered with blood once again. Despite her assertion that she is observing, this is not something you get to do when Hannibal is involved and participation is a necessary requirement. It just might not be one you are conscious of.

Bedelia’s bathtub trip echoes Alana Bloom’s envelopment by inky water in the season 2 finale with one important difference as instead of sinking into it, Alana is consumed from the bottom up and we can’t see any of her below the surface.

Hannibal 2.13 Alana“All I see is dark swarming behind my eyelids. I dream darkness comes into me. It comes and it is insidious. Up my nose, into my ears. It comes and I feel poisoned.” Bedelia is bathed in light as she drifts further down whereas Alana is consumed by the horrors of Hannibal’s crimes and her blindness to them.

Hannibal 2.13 Alana darknessIn Hannibal’s flashbacks we see his time with Gideon in black and white. While no one can replace Will Graham as Hannibal’s favorite companion it doesn’t stop Hannibal from auditioning others or at least finding a temporary substitute. Even after he has helped consume two of his own limbs, Gideon is rather zen about everything that is taking place – the crimes he committed shows he is not of sound mind – and gets to the heart of the matter reflecting on Hannibal’s desire to eat with company and not just eating the company pointing to Will as his dream dinner date. Even a cannibal yearns for companionship.

How soon will Bedelia outlast her stay? Maybe she should stop eating the oysters.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

5 Jun

Despite how much print has been in decline in recent years magazine covers still possess the power to make a huge impact and the July issue of Vanity Fair demonstrates just how important old media still is (while being unveiled on social media). This has also been an awards show filled week with the Peabody and Glamour Women of the Year celebrations taking place. Plus all your polo watching sartorial needs are covered.

Caitlyn JennerHi Caitlyn, it is so good to meet you! This is a stunning cover for many reasons and while plenty has been said about how amazing Caitlyn Jenner looks all glammed up it is also important to remember this is about far more than just external beauty. Laverne Cox addresses this on her Tumblr and it is essential reading.

EssenceSpeaking of Laverne Cox here is she is with some of her Orange is the New Black co-stars (just one week until new episodes!) on the cover of Essence all dressed in the color of their show. What’s great about this cover is the number of women featured (Danielle Brooks, Samira Wiley, Adrienne C. Moore, Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba, Vicky Jeudy) and that it is celebrating ‘sexy at every size’ styling each women in a dress for their figure. Body positive feelings happiness.

Amy Schumer and Tina FeyMoving on from magazines to awards with Amy Schumer receiving a Peabody for Inside Amy Schumer from Tina Fey (on stage there was smooching) with both ladies opting for black. Schumer’s LBD is tuxedo inspired which automatically gets all the points from me.

Kerry WashingtonThe UK Glamour Women of the Year Awards look like a whole lot of fun if the Instagram shots are anything to go by and this is reflected in the red carpet attire with Kerry Washington going for 70s disco infused tube top and glitzy David Koma skirt. Now I want to go out dancing.

Gillian AndersonI don’t know if I would love this on anyone but Gillian Anderson and a tulle cape is so playful and so dramatic that I can’t not smile. Extra giddiness comes from the return of Hannibal last night and all the incredible Bedelia costuming.

Emma WillisSimple chic from Emma Willis and she never disappoints on the red carpet. While it isn’t quite Roksanda levels of stunning as last year’s the blue neck detail and texture elevates it.

Diane Kruger and Joshua JacksonTV Ate My Wardrobe’s official Best Dressed Couple crown wearers continue to please in every single way with Diane Kruger’s magical fashion unicorn status remaining intact in vintage Roland Mouret at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. Joshua Jackson’s grey suit is impeccable and there are no words to describe how he is looking at her.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ruth Wilson, Emma RobertsCulottes are a returning trend that has me invoking a loud WHY?! but Ruth Wilson is making me consider them as a fashion choice because she manages to look pretty damn cool while watching polo last weekend. Basically this event includes actresses wearing clothes I might normally be dismissive of that on this occasion look super cool. Maggie Gyllenhaal is working a pink suit with a white crop top with a pair of highly covetable sunglasses. And Emma Roberts’ yellow dress is something I would like in any sun soaked setting. Cute leopard print bag too.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

Best of the 2015 CFDA Fashion Awards Red Carpet

2 Jun

It is only Tuesday and this has already been a very busy week for the red carpet. Last night the Lincoln Center was awash with models, singers and actors wearing the creations of designers attending the annual CFDA Fashion Awards. As with the Met Gala this is a celebration of fashion and so the bar for creativity is set higher than your average red carpet; here are our favorite looks from the night.

Diane KrugerKicking things off with Diane Kruger shutting down the red carpet in a Prabal Gurung dress that resembles no other.

Janelle MonaeJanelle Monae showed some caped goodness switching out black and white H&M for white and gold Tadashi Shoji adding to her recent sartorial highs.

Gigi and ZacharyModel Gigi Hadid poses with a rather dapper Zachary Quinto and she has been dipped in the fashion equivalent of liquid gold in a stunning Michael Kors jumpsuit. There are nods to the decade which is currently dominating editorials and the runway and I am so all in on this 1970s revival.

Juliette LewisWearing this many white feathers is hard look to pull off and Juliette Lewis is winning me over with how much fun she is having in this Christian Siriano creation. The crop top factor helps it avoid looking bridal.

Karlie and DianeKarlie Kloss in plunging red polka dot DVF posing with Diane von Furstenberg in another strong pattern that is very on brand; both women look sensational.

Taraji P HensonTwo days in a row for Taraji P. Henson and off the back from winning Best Actress in a Drama at the Critics’ Choice Awards. This super sexy maroon Vera Wang Collection frock packs a huge ‘wow’ punch and shades of red are dominating TV Ate My Wardrobe’s picks from this event.

January JonesI’m on the fence about the overall look of January Jones in J. Mendel, which I think is down to the shape of the pants and my general complicated feelings about jumpsuits (which are well documented on this site). But she looks great and now I’m going to go cry some more about how we left Betty (never getting over it).

Joshua JacksonOh, hello.

Best of the 2015 Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet

1 Jun

TV Award season is here and to kick things off we have the Critics’ Choice Awards. Around March I get a little bit of red carpet fatigue after a long succession of award shows; now this has subsided and once again fancy frocks are what I crave. The Critics’ Choice is a fun one as it is neither full on nor is it as casual as a TCA press tour or PaleyFest.

You're the Worst Critics' ChoiceThey might have lost Best Comedy to Silicon Valley, but You’re the Worst takes home the best dressed cast award (there is no actual trophy) looking dapper as fuck. Kether Donohue goes full bombshell with Aya Cash opting for one of my favorite outfit choices in a stunning hunter green lady suit. Desmin Borges and Chris Geere scrub up rather well too and can season 2 get a premiere date, please?

Aya CashAnd because Aya Cash looks so great in this suit here is a solo shot.

Mae WhitmanA really fun studded Alice + Olivia dress for Mae Whitman which looks like either playing connect the dots with a map of the stars or a funky scientific diagram of a leaf. Either way, I love it.

Judy GreerJudy Greer carries off an awkward mid-length with aplomb in this beautiful blue print. Bonus red lipstick points at the ready.

Maggie GyllenhaalGoing full summer florals and looking stunning is Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Chelsea PerettiColor blocking in satin isn’t always easy to do, but Chelsea Peretti works it. The shoulder capping detail and additional color from the clutch equal a couple of prayer hands emojis.

Taraji P HensonTaraji P. Henson took home Best Drama Actress and while I am only 5 episodes into Empire, I am obsessed with all things Cookie. Also with Henson’s purple lip color.

Gina RodriguezMulti-textured is what I need for this much sheer to work and the bodice detail on Gina Rodriguez’s Reem Acra Couture is stunning.

Ivonne CollIt must run in the Jane the Virgin family as here is Ivonne Coll also looking super classy in a black gown.

Carrie BrownsteinPolka dot halter dress hits my sweet spot, but it is Carrie Brownstein’s gold tipped heels and red lipstick which I can’t get enough of.

Judith LightJudith Light, killing it as always.

Carrie CoonNo Best Supporting Actress for Carrie Coon (went to the equally deserving Lorraine Toussaint for OITNB); however she looks fantastic in burgundy.

Yvonne StrahovskiThere’s not much to Yvonne Strahovski column of cerulean blue, but this color is stunning on her and I am so ready to see her in wearing 60s attire in The Astronauts Wives Club.

Holly TaylorThe Americans won Best Drama (!) and Holly Taylor’s red rose infused Don O’Neill gown avoids leaning towards the overwhelming side thanks to the subtle cut outs.

Clea DuvallClea DuVall closes this red carpet (or rather blue carpet) in a green blazer and while this tips towards the too casual end of the scale this wins me over for lady suit and every 90s teen movie reasons.

To watch the acceptance speeches from the 5th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards head here.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

29 May

A relatively quiet week for “Out of the Box” but there are still plenty of treats in store including another Sarah Michelle Gellar reunion moment, magazine covers, pre-Emmy nominations events and how to brighten up the red carpet if you’re a dude.

IMG_1659Orange is the New Black returns in just two weeks (and then we will have the dilemma of  how quick to watch it) and Bust continues its excellent cover run with Laverne Cox looking super cute in a very summery gingham halter top and high waisted shorts.

Ellie KemperEmmy roundtable season is here and The Hollywood Reporter kicked off the acting side of things with funny ladies talking about a whole range of issues in smart and interesting ways. Ellie Kemper’s tiered skirt (or an extreme twist on peplum) with the turquoise underlining is the standout in this collection of bold dresses and I love what she says about Kimmy’s style during this conversation “I think that [Kimmy] came from this horrible, unspeakable experience, and she is tough like a young girl might be tough. She is all pinks and candy and yellows but still very powerful.”

IMG_0680Now this is how you do a “For Your Consideration” ad with bonus lady suit points (those leather sleeves!).

Viola DavisAt a screening for How to Get Away with Murder, Viola Davis does casual chic in an all black ensemble save for some sparkly sneakers. Heels versus flats have been a big talking point since Cannes and while I’m not sure these kinds of flats would work on a big red carpet event, they look really great in this setting.

Cruel IntentionsThanks to a surprise reunion at a performance of The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Cruel Intentions this post has been written with the Cruel Intentions soundtrack as the musical accompaniment (sorry neighbors for my attempts to sing-along to Skunk Anansie) and it has made me so happy for so many reasons. I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is fully on board with the 90s nostalgia kick. Next up recreating one of these WB ads.

Colton HaynesColton Haynes switches out this signature red for pink at the San Andreas premiere demonstrating that suits don’t just come in three colors.

Emmy Roundtable Season is Here!

28 May

You know the drill by now and while I can pretend I haven’t been checking various industry websites daily (okay sometimes way more than that) for their Emmy discussion coverage, anyone who visits TV Ate My Wardrobe at this time of year will be aware of my love of all things roundtable. The Hollywood Reporter kicked things off a couple of weeks ago with an interesting chat with writers from shows such as EmpireThe Good Wife and The Leftovers and now we turn to the comedy actresses.

The Hollywood Reporter has gathered a roll call of ladies I would like to get a boozy dinner with and covers network, cable, basic cable and streaming platforms; Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Ellie Kemper (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Lena Dunham (Girls), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish) and Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer) discuss a range of subjects touching on racism, sexism and issues they have encountered in the work place. Sounds like a hoot, right? Oh, but it is.

THR Comedy coverThere’s a lot of jaw dropping revelations which sadly fall in line with some of the other industry stories making the rounds (such as Maggie Gyllenhaal is ‘too old’ and Salma Hayek has an accent). You can read the transcript over at the THR website, which is great and all, but the videos are where the real good stuff is at. In the past the full discussion has been released at the same time as the issue of the magazine, however this year we will have to wait until August when it will be available on THR.com and SundanceTV. For now we will have to make do with the clips they have made available on YouTube, which thanks to some editing makes it seem like the same question gets asked three times. Regardless of this choppy nature there is still plenty to unpack.

First up Amy Schumer discussing the incredible 12 Angry Men episode of Inside Amy Schumer and the inspiration behind it (so much rage/eye rolls at those dudes).

Good audition stories ahoy and by good I mean ‘Holy fuck! Hollywood is a garbage dump at times’ with Tracee Ellis Ross sharing a humiliating experience as well as talking about sexism and racism behind the camera.

Gina Rodriguez shares a similar WTF audition moment and I heart these women and their reactions to the crap they have to endure so hard.

On race and learning experiences Lena Dunham discusses the reaction to season 1 of Girls. Plus she also talks sexism and how her book advance was scrutinized. Plus I really want to know who the Girls guest star who spouted that awful shit is.

For a couple more videos from this roundtable head here and roll on August so we can watch the full thing (this will be my sentiment for all of these posts).

Comedy roundtableStyling wise they have stuck with the bold color palette and this tends to be the signature look for the comedy actress editorial, while the drama actresses usually get something a little more somber or on the more delicate end; see last year’s pastel, satin and lace for more (cue this year’s drama ladies in so much sparkle just to prove this theory wrong).

Check back for more Emmy related discussions in the weeks/months to come.
