Best of the 2016 Emmys Red Carpet: Bold Color and Couples

19 Sep

Game of Thrones and American Crime Story dominated the actual Emmy awards and there were also plenty of surprise winners. Of course a few grumbles were had and while I was rooting hard for The Americans I can’t be sad when Tatiana Maslany and Rami Malek won in the main acting categories.

This was also a really strong red carpet year and the first of today’s bumper posts showcases the array of bold color frocks and adorable couples.sarah-paulsonSarah Paulson in my actual favorite look of the night in an incredible plunging Prada gown that made me full gasp when I first saw her and while girlfriend Holland Taylor was absent (she is currently rehearsing The Front Page on Broadway), she made sure to give plenty of shout-outs on both the red carpet and when she won.tatiana-maslany-and-tom-cullen

Tatiana Maslany has been crushing it all weekend and this was no exception; Alexander Wang is favoring red (see also Priyanka Chopra) and this is one trend that worked on a numerous occasions last night. Tom Cullen is also serving up great beard and tux.portia-doubledayGoing Old Hollywood glam is Portia Doubleday in Armani Prive and a season in stunning neutrals on Mr. Robot means this is a very welcome colorful sight.kate-mckinnonKate McKinnon’s reaction to winning was an early contender for best surprise face and this is another fabulous lady in red moment. Perfect lip color too.priyanka-chopraFor best twirling; Priyanka Chopra in Jason Wu.tphYellow also dominated and Taraji P. Henson crushed it in Vera Wang with the best clutch accessory: a custom made Edie Parker.courteny-b-vance-and-angela-bassettForever favorite couple Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett are forever looking incredible on the red carpet/in life. ellie-kemperA different take on the yellow trend and Ellie Kemper’s Jenny Packham frock has pattern and sparkles; two things that will always draw my eye.amanda-peetAmanda Peet gifs from Togetherness were super helpful in getting across how I felt about some of the awards last night and I’m so glad I get to show off her Altuzarra dress too. Another sequin and yellow treat.shiri-applebyDiane von Furstenberg is best known for the iconic wrap dress, but she also makes killer red carpet attire including this super bold Shiri Appleby number.constance-zimmerA newly blunted bob gives Constance Zimmer’s look a fun edge against this very pretty Monique Lhuillier gown.viola-davisMatching the bow tie to Viola Davis’ Marchesa is a nice touch and a fabulous look from the couple.tina-feyThis color is stunning on Tina Fey as does the shape of this Oscar de la Renta; a red carpet best?jane-krakowskiAfter dominating at the BAFTA LA Tea Party, there was sadly a lack of great pattern at the Emmys this year. However Jane Krakowski delivered and I am also very much feeling her colorful shoes.keri-russell-and-matthew-rhysI don’t love Keri Russell’s Stephane Rolland dress, but I do love this shot with Matthew Rhys and her Giuseppe Zanotti heels are also amazing.

Best of the Pre-Emmy Parties: Vanity Fair and BAFTA

18 Sep

More pre-Emmy gaming at the Vanity Fair and FX party with a whole host of TV Ate My Wardrobe faves and this party also showcases just how good FX is at the moment. Plus the annual BAFTA LA Tea Party, which always delivers on the daytime shindig attire.keri-russell-and-matthew-rhysGot to kick off with the show that dominates a lot of costume chat in these parts; Keri Russell always brings the casual glam to events like this and for this occasion Matthew Rhys has dialed back on the hiatus beard grizzle with a trim. Nice color suit too and I am looking forward to seeing more of this IRL couple tonight.keirdrich-sellatiAnd this is several shades of adorable from the Americans kids and Keidrich Sellati’s turtleneck/blazer combo is levels of spy and casual attire that his TV dad would wear. schwimmer-paulson-brownDelightful is the word I would use to describe this photo with the cast of American Crime Story giving off all the good vibes. Excellent lipstick choice from Sarah Paulson too.
connie-britton-and-jesse-plemonsThis Vanity Fair/FX party is just a long list of feelings pretty much; including this Friday Night Lights reunion. Tami and Lance feeeeeeelings. donald-gloverDonald Glover keeps the same shirt and changes the suit and still looks just as good as the day before.angela-bassettAngela Bassett always looks incredible and this is no exception. tatiana-maslany-and-maisie-williamsNow to the BAFTA LA Tea Party and there are a lot of super cute patterned dresses to scroll through including Maisie Williams in a very fun House of Holland number, which pairs really well with Tatiana Maslany’s also starry patchwork Coach frock. yara-shahidiGoing slightly more pattern delicate is Yara Shahidi in an ethereal Tommy Hilfiger dress and another stunner from the Black-ish star.millie-bobby-brownA few days ago I mentioned some red carpet similarities between Millie Bobby Brown and Kiernan Shipka; this look continues this notion and while I’m not a fan of the term ‘age appropriate’ (as it can sound quite stuffy) this is exactly that. Good choice of flats too.melora-hardinTransparent’s Melora Hardin also has the right idea for a frock that bridges the summer/fall gap especially when it is still this warm.alison-wrightA different spin on print and Alison Wright’s Stella McCartney jumpsuit (the top version has been worn by Cookie on Empire) is a fun take on daytime party attire.rupaulPolka dots and pink at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, zebra print and yellow at the BAFTA Tea Party; RuPaul crushes it in color and print every single time.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

26 Aug

A really fun mix this week from “Out of the Box” with a makeup campaign, magazine covers and red carpet events delivering the sartorial goods. And we are about to enter the very busy September period – both professionally and personally for me as I’m also getting married next month – and I cannot wait.Taraji P HensonThis week MAC announced a forthcoming collaboration with Taraji P. Henson and sign me up already. The first image of Henson for MAC is super sexy and is giving me flashbacks to her editorial, which also happened to be my favorite magazine cover from 2015 (and yes it is still on my coffee table).Mary Elizabeth WinsteadMary Elizabeth Winstead is currently top of the character style crush list on BrainDead and now the IRL one after this appearance at the premiere for The Hollars in a divine Victoria Beckham frock. As if I need another reason to be lipstick obsessed. Sarah PaulsonJust looking at Sarah Paulson’s Marc Jacobs ensemble in this heat is enough to make me sweat, but despite the August temps Paulson is totally crushing this outfit while on the pre-Emmy trail at this Television Academy event. I am still head over heels in love with her haircut. Rami MalekContinuing his patterned shirt domination is Rami Malek also at the same Television Academy event and the top button done up look continues to work like a charm. Switching things up in a double breasted jacket and Malek is definitely high on the Emmy red carpet most anticipated list. This was also the week he took his first Instagram photo. Big things are happening.Michelle ObamaI wasn’t entirely bowled over by most September issue efforts this year and it has been left to some of the weekly/bi-monthly magazines to pick up the slack including this fantastic shot of Michelle Obama wearing Jonathan Simkhai on the cover of Variety.

In the piece Obama talks about the range of shows she has guest starred on (Billy on the Street, Carpool Karaoke on the Late, Late ShowiCarly) to the shows she loves right now (The AmericansOITNB) and what she watched when she was growing up (The Mary Tyler Moore Show).

The whole piece is really great in how it explores the decisions Obama has made about which shows to appear on:

“While I am first lady, I wasn’t first lady my whole life. I’m a product of pop culture. I’m a consumer of pop culture, and I know what resonates with people. I know what they’ll get a chuckle out of and what they think is kind of silly. And whenever my team approaches me with ideas and concepts, we’re usually like, ‘Is this really funny? Are people going to understand it?'”

And and there is also an A+ thread about why pop culture is so important “So it becomes very important for the world to see different images of each other, so that, again, we can develop empathy and understanding.” To read the whole thing head here.Gina Rodriguez Latina magSomehow it is time for October editions of magazines and we have a contender for magazine cover of the year with Gina Rodriguez giving so much engaging fierce face for Latina. This haircut really is spectacular and I love how confrontational and disarming this look to camera is.

In the piece Rodriguez discusses the Alex Garland project she was shooting over the summer and Annihilation is very high on the movies I can’t wait for list (and not just for Oscar Isaac reasons – the whole cast is fantastic). Luckily Jane the Virgin doesn’t have Rodriguez tied to a Kit Harington no haircut contract clause and while commenting about her Annihilation hair chop she remarks “I am not my beauty. Who I am is not my fucking hair, and to be an actor is to transform.”Gina RodriguezThe whole shoot is spectacular and this is just one of many incredible shots of Rodriguez doing her fashion thing. For more head here.

Best of the 2016 TCA Awards Style

8 Aug

The 2016 TCA Awards (not to be confused with the Teen Choice Awards) took place on Saturday and it is one awards show where the attendees know they have won* and that aren’t televised. They also don’t separate the acting awards by gender and ladies won big this year with Sarah Paulson and Rachel Bloom taking home the drama and comedy accolades. American Crime Story was the big winner of the night and The Americans received Best Drama for the second year in a row. For a full list of winners head here.

Sidenote – I also can’t help but think of this episode of The Comeback when it comes to award shows where the recipient knows they have won.

Check out our style highlights from the event below.Mr Robot and CubaThe Mr Robot cast continue their best dressed domination with Christian Slater and Rami Malek crushing their suit choices (as per usual). Malek’s penchant for color instantly makes him standout. Portia Doubleday and Carly Chaikin’s excellent dress picks continue with pleats and a super sexy black number; they are high on the Emmy red carpet anticipation list. Oh hey there Cuba Gooding Jr. Stephanie CorneliussenMore royal blue pleats from a Mr Robot cast member and this time with one of my other favorite things; sequins. Stephanie Corneliussen also happened to be a TCA panel style highlight last week.Sarah Paulson and Holland TaylorThere’s a lot of sheer/net curtain elements to this dress and much like this Philosophy frock Sarah Paulson wore a few months ago I am somewhat on the fence; however she wears it incredibly well and the shorter hairstyle continues to be the best. Also got some strong #RelationshipGoals going on as Paulson poses with girlfriend Holland Taylor.Holly TaylorIt was a busy week for Americans stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys and they didn’t make the awards (it looks like Matthew Rhys was shooting Girls), but the rest of the cast looked amazing with Holly Taylor in a sparkly Marc Bouwer frock. Bonus lipstick points.Alison Wright and Keidrich SellatiWhoa! Keidrich Sellati who plays Henry Jennings sure looks tall/scrubs up well and is finally out from behind the computer screen. Pockets and florals, plus gold shoes equals a fantastic look from Alison Wright. Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKennaI love how genuinely thrilled Rachel Bloom looks at events like this and the red/white coordinating with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna is striking. Jane Fonda and Lily TomlinAll the feelings and a good way to start the week with a hug from Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

2016 Emmy Nomination Acting Wish List

13 Jul

Emmy nominations will be announced tomorrow (Thursday, July 14) and that means it is time to offer up some quick thoughts regarding who I would like to see on the shortlist. I’ve split my list into drama, mini-series and comedy with some shows getting multiple nomination hopes. These are all actors who have submitted their work for Emmy consideration and some of these are repeats from last year’s wish list.

A mix of certain locks, potential first timers and complete outsiders make up these choices and while I am sure there are some amazing performances that are not included below this is the list of actors I have gone for.

Dramathe americansMatthew Rhys and Keri Russell

Every year The Americans tops its previous season with Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell taking levels of soul crushing heartache to new heights. It was hard not to spend half of any review I wrote praising the leads for how much they manage to convey with just a look and the number of ways they manage to devastate, but I get to repeat myself here for those that missed that.

They’re not the only Americans actors who deserve a nod this year with Alison Wright turning Poor Martha into something so much more than a tragic lovelorn figure. I would like to this show reap all the awards this year and have my usual gif lined up for when this doesn’t happen. Again. The Leftovers TCAJustin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Regina King

The Leftovers hit new highs in season 2 and relocating to Texas was a huge part of this. Three scenes really stand out; the first is when Nora wonders if there’s been a second departure when she wakes up to find Kevin is gone. A desperate phone call to emergency service is followed by a desperate hug when Kevin walks in through the door which quickly shifts to anger that he put her through this. The second comes when Nora gets Erika to take the questionnaire she has given to countless others and as the camera pushes in on both actresses we get to see the best of both Carrie Coon and Regina King. The third and final scene I want to highlight comes from the season finale and when I heard this clip on a recent Vulture podcast it made me cry; when Justin Theroux sings “Homeward Bound” the tears and snot flows freely and it tops off an incredible season.Krystal Orphan BlackTatiana Maslany

Even in this fourth season of Orphan Black I still manage to forget that Tatiana Maslany tends to be a least 50% of the characters in any one scene and that she can break my heart in an instant. Caitriona BalfeCaitriona Balfe

While I’m on the subject of heartbreak which is a common theme among all my picks; Caitriona Balfe delivered a raw and emotionally devastating performance when Claire experienced a huge loss midway through season 2. “Faith” is the ideal Emmy showcase episode, but Balfe has delivered on a number of levels this year showcasing Claire’s strengths and vulnerability in equal measure.UnREALShiri Appleby

On UnREAL Shiri Appleby as Rachel teeters on the edge of falling apart at every turn; she is fantastic at her job but that means a whole lot of questionable actions and Appleby conveys both the conflict and excitement in the manipulation of the Everlasting contestants that she gets off on.

Mini-Series

THE PEOPLE v. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia" Episode 106 (Airs Tuesday, March 8, 10:00 pm/ep) -- Pictured: (l-r) Sarah Paulson a Marcia Clark, Sterling K. Brown as Christopher Darden. CR: Ray Mickshaw/FXThe mini-series category is stacked this year and I’m hoping that both Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown will have their names called out on tomorrow. Paulson is pretty much a lock for her incredible portrayal of Marcia Clark and while Brown is more of an outside chance I will be disappointed if someone like John Travolta (because he is a movie star) gets nominated ahead of him. For the chemistry between Brown and Paulson alone they deserve an Emmy nod with late night office intimate dancing and a look in the hotel corridor that had me screaming KISS HIM; I did not expect American Crime Story to result in shipping of any kind. Fargo - Peggy in stripesKirsten Dunst

On Fargo this season Peggy Blumquist became a new TV style icon and Kirsten Dunst took a character who could have felt incredibly cartoony and delivered something a lot more nuanced. Wanting something better than the life she has and ending up in a murdery cat and mouse game, Dunst makes Peggy a tragic figure we root for and shake our head at while also giving me a good reason why I have kept so many magazines.

Oscar Isaac

I’m not just picking Oscar Isaac because I want to see him in a tux come September, but because Show Me a Hero is still something that almost a year later feels like a gut punch when I think about it. Isaac also manages to work that mustache and is delightful in the moments where he fixes up the house in dad jeans while listening to Bruce Springsteen.

ComedyGretchen You're the Worst 2.04Aya Cash

A lot of the performances I have chosen have involved some element of crushing heartbreak and this isn’t just relegated to drama; Aya Cash and You’re the Worst took the comedies that make me cry to new levels this year and this exploration of depression was an unexpected and welcome turn from one of my favorite shows on TV.

Crazy Ex GirlfriendRachel Bloom

I am late to the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend party having only started (and finished) the show last week and Rachel Bloom is doing such a wide range of things both in front and behind the camera. There are the song performances (and I have a number of these swirling through my head) coupled with the range of emotions from the funny to the agonizing and I think we have found a common theme among my nomination choices.

Aziz AnsariAziz Ansari

Another creator/star that stands out this year is Aziz Ansari with his Netflix series Master of None and for things that get stuck in my head I have been saying “The Sickening… It’s happening!” a lot this year. Also for getting in my favorite passage from The Bell Jar into the season finale in such an interesting way and gifting us with amazing weekend date ideas, showing the difference between experiences walking home if your are a dude or a woman and highlighting diversity on TV/film issues. I hope to see multiple nominations for Ansari.

Jane the Virgin 2.02 stripes

Gina Rodriguez

Another case of a comedy that makes me cry just as much as it makes me laugh and Gina Rodriguez delivers in both arenas. Season 2 saw Jane juggling motherhood, grad school and so many romantic triangle situations; it is the relationships between the women on Jane the Virgin that really hits my sweet spot and the chemistry Rodriguez has with her co-stars is a huge part of this charm.

UnREAL returned this week with a strong and biting premiere; here is Shiri Appleby gifting us with a Doogie Howser flashback.

Back to the present and this pairing makes me so happy; great wcw choice.

Tonight is The Americans S4 finale and Holly Taylor not only plays one of the best teens on TV, but her notebook prop from the show is so spot on with detail even if we barely get to see this stuff on screen.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

8 Apr

Last week spring fever was in the air with a whole array of bold patterns and color; this edition of “Out of the Box” is a little bit more varied with some very fun outfits, fancy awards wear and more magazine cover stunners.Danai GuriraDespite my white clothing reservations – because I am a spiller – Danai Gurira crushes it at Black Girls Rock! in this very cool Cushnie Et Ochs jumpsuit number that wouldn’t look out of place in Studio 54’s heyday. Gurira is on a red carpet hot streak and all I can say regarding Walking Dead is Michonne better not be the one on the end of Jeffery Dean Morgan’s bat. Caitriona BalfeMore white and Caitriona Balfe does the whole casual ladysuit thing with aplomb at the Television Academy’s Outlander panel discussion. A simple and super cool twist on one of my favorite trends and I’m looking forward to all the incredible costumes when Outlander returns tomorrow (Saturday 9). Alison PillAlison Pill in a very cute outfit at the premiere of The Night Manager and one that a) is perfect for someone who isn’t in the project of the event they are attending and b) something I would like to see in my closet.Uzo AdubaAt the Olivier Awards Uzo Aduba took a break from performing in The Maids and looked elegant in this orange off the shoulder Elizabeth Kennedy gown. And now all I want is a bag shaped like a ball. Kit+Harington+Olivier+Awards+Mastercard+Red+8rQo6n8ircnlMaking their official debut as a couple at the Olivier Awards, which makes this sound like we’re stepping out of a society novel and also maybe trying to shift attention from the question Kit Harington has been asked repeatedly since the Game of Thrones season 5 finale.

This isn’t news for anyone who follows celeb dating stories (which I do), but I am always thrilled when IRL couples walk the carpet together especially when their characters were also together on screen. I’m not a hundred percent in love with the shape of Rose Leslie’s gown, but the color and pattern is stunning.Sarah Paulson and Sterling K BrownAnd by Look of the Week I mean look of the week. The shipping of Marcia Clark and Chris Darden was the biggest surprise to come out of American Crime Story (something I wrote a little bit more on in my Observer column this week). Here are Sarah Paulson and Sterling K. Brown at an American Crime Story For Your Consideration event earlier this week; up close I really like Sarah Paulson’s frock, but that level of sheer in the wide shot and lining does not do it for me.Lupita Nyong'oAnother striking Lupita Nyong’o magazine cover as part of Variety’s annual “Power of Women” issue celebrating her work with Mother Health International. Excellent trench and background color elevate this shot, but Lupita’s face is what really makes this a standout image.Gilmore GirlsThe Gilmore Girls revival is in full swing and because I am only just finishing up season 1 (I know) I am avoiding reading this Entertainment Weekly article and looking at the photos until I’ve caught up; it is going to be hard but also that is totally on me.

They both look great and I particularly like Alexis Bledel’s ensemble and lipstick (of course). It’s weird seeing them in clothes that don’t give me all the flashbacks to early aughts fashion nightmares.Emilia ClarkeEmilia Clark put a sparkly bird on it wearing Gucci on her Glamour cover and there’s a lot of chat about nudity on Game of Thrones including Michiel Huisman’s “perfect bottom.”

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Apr

Spring is here and the red carpet is awash with florals and bold patterns at the premieres for The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Confirmation. Don’t ditch the coats just yet though as the weather has a habit of turning in an instant and there is also fabulous outerwear among the pretty dresses this week. Plus more magazine cover sensations, talk show entrance attire and the FX Upfronts.Ellie KemperKimmy Schmidt has one of television’s brightest wardrobes and star Ellie Kemper doesn’t disappoint in a very cute Tanya Taylor floral mini-dress, which works wonders against the pink backdrop and purple carpet.Tituss BurgessSpeaking of bold turns and Tituss Burgess lights up the purple carpet in a look that makes me want to crack open a bottle of Pinot by Tituss to celebrate. Kimmy Schmidt returns in 2 weeks (April 15) for season 2. Now to see if I can finish Daredevil before then.Kerry WashingtonAnother floral sensation with Kerry Washington in romantic Dolce & Gabbana at the Confirmation premiere (airing Saturday, April 16). My only quibble is it could do with being slightly shorter as it is a tad overwhelming, but on the whole this is a style which we have seen Washington nail on multiple occasions; embracing print sets her apart from the character we see on a weekly basis.Regina KingHypnotic black and white flower power from Regina King and the only thing this really needs is perhaps a bolder lip color, but that tends to be my answer to enhance any outfit.ZendayaHow to take a feature from a paint program and turn it into an excellent outfit; Zendaya’s color palette mosaic bodice and matching skirt lining is a welcome addition to this week’s bold looks and the Confirmation red carpet delivers on an array of striking ensembles.Sarah PaulsonDouble Sarah Paulson this week and first up wearing Philosophy at the FX Upfront The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story screening. Her hair looks really great here (Marcia Clark hair essay plug!) and upfronts fall into the TCA/PaleyFest dress code where there isn’t really one, but you don’t want to go too fancy or shabby. Paulson straddles this middle ground here. The blue heart pendant is a nice touch with this plunging neckline; a subtle nod to her favorite emoji?Holly TaylorBorrowing a coat from her onscreen mom’s wardrobe is Holly Taylor also at the FX Upfront screening and this Coach tan trench is going to be making an appearance this season on The Americans (we have already seen the black version). Adding a touch of sophistication over her black crop top and jeans casual cool ensemble. Tatiana Maslany ColbertTatiana Maslany is a woman after my own heart and as she makes her way into The Late Show with Stephen Colbert heels in hand and yellow sneakers on her feet. Sarah Paulson ColbertSarah Paulson Part II – also appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and while I’m not totally on board with whatever is going on at the bottom of this dress, the plaid coat with leather lapels is more than making up it. Kirsten DunstGet on my coffee table The Gentlewoman, because woah is this cover shot and yellow/black and white pairing so goddamn good.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

3 Feb

Another award show this week and that means more behind the scenes action from getting ready to after the after parties. Plus Grease: Live live, X-Files props, Empire sleep wars and some high levels of cute in our Insta round-up.

Sophie Turner is all of us in this situation at the SAG Awards.

Standard reaction to a picture of this pair is one that involves experiencing a lot of feelings.

Ultimate #SquadGoals

Marisa Tomei was one of our best dressed at the SAGs and her pre-show ritual looks like a whole lot of fun.

Getting stuck in awards traffic doesn’t seem so bad when Pedro Pascal and Sarah Paulson are around.

Oh, hello.

From the stage Laverne Cox gives us a view from the other side of the amazing OITNB winning cast.

And OITNB’s Emma Myles shows what the end of a SAG winning night looks like.

Kether Donohue crushed it in Grease: Live as Jan and I got a whole lot of IRL bestie feels from this post. Plus I am coveting Aya Cash’s outfit hard.

From the actual opening of the show (which was a feat of technical brilliance) and Vanessa Hudgens deserves all the kudos she is getting for her incredible performance. Great lipstick too.

Support for Grease: Live across the networks and a crossover I now want to see.

A slightly different shot of Jenna Dewan-Tatum on her way to the Hail, Caesar! premiere and the classic ‘lying down to avoid creases’ situation.

Last night’s episode of New Girl was directed by none other than Nick Miller himself; Jake Johnson and Max Greenfield posted a shot that captures him in all his glory.

The Empire sleep wars continue.

This one ends a little more violently.

Adorable overload.

JDM smolder, Will Patton, bagels and a dog make for a good Good Wife set day.

This brow contest is too close to call.

This week’s episode of The X-Files set my giddy levels to new highs and being a huge fan of Kumail Nanjiani podcast, The X Files Files it was so great to see him in this super fun episode. This is the file Nanjiani was given and Gillian Anderson’s reaction to this gift is hilarious.
