Out of the Box: Look of the Week

18 Sep

The September event avalanche continues and this week we have a pretty even split between New York Fashion Week and the Toronto Film Festival with a dash of magazine cover beauties to end things on.

Samira Wiley Milly showMalin Akerman, Samira Wiley and Solange are pretty in pink at the Milly by Michelle Smith runway show with bold colors taking this front row by storm. Last week Wiley’s stunning Christian Siriano campaign was unveiled and the OITNB ladies have been celebrating NYFW on and off their set.

Christina Hendricks Naeem KhanIt looks like Kat Graham is contemplating resting her head on the shoulder of Christina Hendricks and I don’t blame her. This is a whole lot of splendid pattern wearing at Naeem Khan with Ashley Greene’s silver stripe pants giving off a David Bowie vibe and I am so here for that. Bonus red lipstick points for Christina Hendricks for a fantastic crimson shade.

Kiernan Shipka and Christina RicciAt the Highline Coach show Kiernan Shipka wears a cute floral blouse showing once again that this brand is perfect for her and Christina Ricci’s sheepskin vest from the Fall 15 collection is something I would very much like in my wardrobe for when it finally gets a bit colder.Danielle PanabakerOn Instagram Danielle Panabaker said she was “feeling very Sex and the City” in this Monse ensemble at the Monse presentation and it looks like a whole lot of Carrie in the skirt with some Charlotte on top.

Dianna AgronMarc Jacobs closed out NYFW with a decadent affair at the Ziegfeld Theater with concessions, a special Playbill and plenty of fabulous clothes. Dianna Agron went with this theme in the form of her Olympia Le-Tan Red Shoes clutch and while her floral frock is really pretty; it is this clutch that I can’t stop looking at.

Diane Kruger TIFFSwitching out Venice for Toronto and in a sea of amazing Diane Kruger looks this sparkly Chanel Couture dress might be my current favorite. Pairing it with red satin Giuseppe Zanotti sandals gives a strong pop of color and this is an all round delight from a TV Ate My Wardrobe style queen.

Diane and Pacey TIFFThe second Diane Kruger ensemble doesn’t quite pack the same punch but I’m here for the sparkles, strappy sandals and her oh so handsome date. And Kruger’s hangover confession on Instagram has me both chuckling and wishing I could pull something like this together after a heavy night.

Elisabeth MossThis shade of green is fantastic on Elisabeth Moss and she has been killing it on the red carpet at TIFF. The extra oomph from the blue pumps rather than going for safe beige makes me so happy.

Alicia VikanderAt the HFPA/InStyle TIFF party Alicia Vikander wore all Louis Vuitton (she is one of the new faces of the brand after all) and does a good job of showing why in a studded tweed frock. Vikander is probably going to be gracing a lot of red carpets and award shows; something I am beyond fine with because she is both a very fine actress and her sartorial risk taking means we shouldn’t get bored of her by the time the Oscars roll around.

Clemence PoseyClémence Poésy looking cool as fuck in an outfit that is pure relaxed chic.

Empire THREmpire won’t be winning Best Drama at the Emmys this weekend after a somewhat surprising nomination snub, but they are slaying the cover of The Hollywood Reporter and Taraji P. Henson has a strong chance of getting a Cookie win. Somehow Jussie Smollet is pulling off the very shiny suit he has been given and this is such a fun colorful image with Taraji rightly drawing focus.

Lupita VogueGet ready for so much Lupita Nyong’o in the coming months and December is going to be such a good red carpet month with the Star Wars press tour and all the pre-awards posturing. This Vogue cover is so striking and I’m so glad they’ve gone with such a plain background because Lupita really shines. The gold Valentino Haute Couture gown is spectacular as is the rest of the photo shoot.

New York Fashion Week Star Style at Monique Lhuillier

14 Sep

TV stars aplenty at the Monique Lhuillier show on Saturday wearing a variety of gorgeous frocks from floral to lace. The show itself boasted plenty of bold and feminine looks for spring with several cute mini dresses standing out as well as a crop top/skirt combo I can definitely picture Jenny Slate rocking.

Here are my favorites before we delve into who was at the show.

Monique L NYFW SS Monique L NYFW Monique L Monique LhuillierThe front row crowd were all wearing Monique Lhuillier from recent Fall and Resort collections with plenty of color, pattern and structured silhouettes.

Gillian JacobsGillian Jacobs is my personal standout in this beautiful floral print and I love the dash of red from her nails as she poses up a storm.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ashley MadekweChartreuse is a really difficult color to pull off and Ashley Madekwe is doing just this with plenty of poise as she watches the runway. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is working a very fun floral shirt dress, which is actually two pieces tied up in the middle.

Jamie ChungThis color is incredible on Jamie Chung and is making me feel satin friendly (although the sheer panel is not winning me over).

Bella Thorne and Skylar SamuelsThe Duff reunion ahoy and both Bella Thorne and Skyler Samuels are wearing frocks from the Resort 2016 collection with flowers and lace being strong themes throughout. Samuels is about to appear on screens in probably my most anticipated new show of fall in Scream Queens (not sure how that became the case) and those yellow pumps are everything.

Jessica LowndesMore lace for Jessica Lowndes and the dash of pink lip color is just the right thing to brighten up this outfit. I also like how many Gillian Jacobs background appearances there are.

NYFW Fantasy Costuming: Styling Comedies with Kate Spade New York

12 Sep

Fall TV is so close and New York Fashion Week is already looking ahead to Spring 2016 and so the time has come for some more Fantasy Costuming. Starting with a very colorful and playful collection from Kate Spade New York which is ideal for comedy shows such as the The Mindy Project, The Unbreakable Kimmy SchmidtNew GirlJane the Virgin and even You’re the Worst (there are leather jackets and super cool sunglasses). Comedy utilizes bold costuming with a strong color palette and plenty of patterns because I guess it might be considered inappropriate to wear outfits like these in court or while trying to solve crime or something. Kate Spade New York definitely does the bright thing and then some giving us something to smile about.

The novelty bag trend for Kate Spade continues with a whole array of animals and objects with the Admit One clutch going to the top of the covet list. If you’re after something a bit more traditional then there are plenty of non-novelty purses with some incorporating the signature daisy motif from this collection.

Here are some of the standout looks that would look ideal in some current and sadly gone too soon sitcoms.

Kate Spade car bagSparkles for Mindy on The Mindy Project and perfect for festive party season.

Kate Spade trench part twoAnd a workplace look for Mindy. Maybe not quite enough pattern clashing here.

Kate Spade flowerNew Girl won’t be back until mid-season, but this is perfectly Jess.

Kate Spade Pushing DaisiesAnd Jess is a character that probably would own a dog shaped purse and this gorgeous super girly floral full skirt.

Kate Spade playsuitSticking with New Girl and Cece is definitely a fan of the patterned jumpsuit.

Kate Spade rainbowOne character who really embraces every candy color possible is Kimmy Schmidt and a lot of this collection would fit in her wardrobe (if this character suddenly got a pay rise). Or a cute outfit for Jane the Virgin’s Petra as she does love a cute short short.

Kate Spade admit oneThe bag I am a little obsessed with and a dress for Jane on Jane the Virgin for post-maternity wear.

Kate Spade daisy shortsThis has Eliza from Selfie written all over it and now I am super sad about the lack of Henry/Eliza resolution. Yes I’m going to go listen to “Chandelier” again. It would also be perfect for Petra and her stems.

Kate Spade CapeI would love to see Petra pull a dramatic turn and wear a cape. Or I would like to see this cape in my closet.

Kate Spade stripe skirt

This skirt is maybe slightly longer than Gretchen’s usual style on You’re the Worst, but if we borrow one of the leather jackets from the galley below then it is certainly edgy enough for her work place attire.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Sep

The busy that is September becomes all too clear in this week’s Out of the Box as we have fabulous outfits from a variety of events including film festivals, magazine covers, a fashion campaign, New York Fashion Week, film premieres and a profile of a star from a returning show.

Lizzy CaplanStunning from Lizzy Caplan in ultimate pattern clashing Mary Katrantzou and she pushes the fashion envelope once again at a Sleeping With Other People screening. And it also bears repeating that her lack of Emmy nomination means one less showstopping moment. Let’s enjoy her breathtaking Donna Karan Atelier gown from last year instead.

Samira WileyNew York Fashion Week started yesterday so expect plenty of coverage in the coming days and one piece of fashion news that has already caused woots of joy comes courtesy of the new face of Christian Siriano; Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley looks incredible in this campaign.

Aya Cash ComplexYou’re the Worst returned this week and I pretty much had a giant grin plastered across my face throughout the episode. Which is pretty much the same expression the Aya Cash Complex shoot gave me and this cobalt sequin collared dress number coupled with a flawless sunglasses game (much like her character’s) and amazing red lip color is giving me so much life. The rest of the photos and interview are just as good including her description of Gretchen and Jimmy’s relationship:

“They’re only one representation of a relationship. The idea that one relationship or one show can represent all of a culture is just not realistic. But I do think there’s a cynicism in our generation. I actually think that cynicism is what makes it so romantic.”

Or as Jimmy might put it “Look, we’re not against sweater people. We’re not protesting sweater people’s right to exist. We just choose not to be them, because they remind us of encroaching death.”

IMG_2296The Shondaland magazine takeover continues with Essence and more sequin pretty for “Out of the Box” this week with Kerry Washington delivering another great cover.

Alicia VikanderThis is one dress I keep going back and forth on ultimately landing in the love it camp and Alicia Vikander’s custom Louis Vuitton peasant gown is a very different look for the Venice Film Festival red carpet and she’s pulling off the drama. Considering how many films she is in this year and that some of them have awards written all over them I am glad she is such a fashion risk taker.

Birgitte Hjort SorensenBirgitte Hjort Sørensen is about to do the all 70s thing in HBO’s Vinyl so it is only appropriate that she shows up to NY Mag and The Cut’s NYFW party sporting some very 70s very wide legged pants. This decade has been providing runway inspiration throughout 2015 and it will be interesting to see if it is still an influence this week. And I am so ready for Sørensen to be a huge star.

Alice + Olivia NYFW Wish List and Style Highs

17 Feb

Taking a break from Fantasy Costuming various shows with a brand that has appeared on New Girl, The Mindy ProjectParks and Recreation and How to Get Away with Murder; Alice + Olivia has the cutest sweaters. This collection was about a lot more than knitwear with designer Stacey Bendet striking a balance between late 60s/early 70s boho and rocker; a strong theme for this NYFW and one discussed yesterday with our Red Valentino Sally Draper Fantasy Costuming.

This post is a mixture of looks from the show and the stars in attendance (some are wearing items available from Alice + Olivia at the moment). Okay there might be some suggestions of what shows some of the pieces should appear on/who should wear them; it is hard to resist the urge to Fantasy Costume.

First up Fall 2015 items to covet:

Alice + OliviaIf you are a regular TV Ate My Wardrobe reader you will know by now that I have very strong feelings about lady tuxes and the current menswear trend. So it might not be too surprising that this simple and sophisticated take on this theme is top of the list. Keri Russell sometimes leans towards this style on the red carpet and even though it is not vintage the pants have a hint of wide legged Elizabeth Jennings about them.

Below are several more outfits from the collection to drool over with pattern and texture reigning supreme – click on the image for a closer look. Jenny Slate will be glad to see the turtleneck is making big waves this NYFW and the first dress in the collection below has a hint of Joan Watson about it.

And now for a few looks from those at the show.

Kate NashSinger Kate Nash went for bold color and pattern in a stunning multicolored ‘Bryn’ skirt pairing it with a very cute zebra sweater.

Sarah Silverman A&OSarah Silverman put a bird on it and makeup artist Tina Turnbow shared this beautiful close up getting ready shot.

Abbi and Ilana at A+OHopefully Ilana Glazer will fare better in white than when her Broad City character last wore something similar to this. Abbi Jacobson’s embellished bird jacket is incredible and she adds an extra pop of color with blue stilettos.

Ella CatliffFashion blogger and model Ella Catliff beats the New York cold with stylish layering including the ‘Shih’ collarless coat and pairing tights with these wedges means no freezing toes in the name of fashion.

NYFW Fantasy Costuming: Sally Draper in Red Valentino Fall 2015

16 Feb

Mad Men is coming to an end (*sob*) but we have time for one final Fantasy Costuming; previously we took a look at spring season threads for Megan Draper and now our attention turns towards a favorite teen fashionista, Sally Draper. Some Fantasy Costuming pieces have included items that have ended up on the shows they were picked out for and this will definitely not be the case here as a) they are not vintage b) they are not designed by Janie Bryant and c) the show wrapped some time ago. However, the Red Valentino Fall 2015 RTW collection features a range of clothes that suit both the time period to an extent and previous costumes Sally has worn.

This is going to be split into three groupings to represent different aspects of the era and Sally’s personality; as always the Fantasy Costuming selections are inspired by the costume design from the show in question – Janie Bryant – and are in no way suggesting this character should wear a specific item mentioned. Click on the thumbnails for a more looks for Sally.

Red Valentino Red Check

This is very school uniform Sally Draper – well maybe not the shoes – and Red Valentino has many plaids, flannels and checks on offer for Fall in a variety of colors. The capelets are super cute and hint at a charming youthful influence with some added tie and furry embellishments. Sally might be getting a bit too old for this style or at least she might think she is, skip to the final grouping of outfits if you want rebellious teen Sally attire.

The white tights are worn with each look and suit the sweet and sugary nature of the playful items in this group from the Red Valentino collection. These are the kinds of dresses Betty would probably love to see her daughter in (although the hemline length may cause some Betty objections) so there might be some resistance, but I think Sally would look fabulous in all of these for any fancy pants occasion she might have to attend with her family. Alas there are no white go go boots. Plus some very fun daytime suggestions for fall days in the city.

Red Valentino blue dress

And now for something Betty would probably not approve of with mismatched patterns and clashing styles mixing a hippy vibe with a little bit of rocker. Throw in some leather, a snarky attitude and staying out late to perfect the teen rebellious streak, which Sally Draper was already demonstrating when we last saw her including a cheeky backyard smoke. Kiernan Shipka could definitely work all of these looks.

Red Valentino tiger coat

Look out for more NYFW Fantasy Costuming posts this week!

NYFW Fantasy Costuming: Rachel Antonoff Fall 2015 for Girls

14 Feb

The first Fantasy Costuming of 2015 courtesy of New York Fashion Week and Rachel Antonoff’s Fall RTW 2015 collection is a mixture of subversive whimsy. Scrolling through the photos it became clear rather quickly that this selection is ideal for the characters on Girls. There is a preppy edge to some of the pieces; which is perfect for both Marnie and Shoshanna, plus Hannah has a tendency to lean this way.

Even as the characters on Girls continue to grow up they can fall back on old tendencies which is why the provocative edge of some these pieces is dream wear for Hannah. And she has definitely worn something that resembles pajamas while out and about cycling in Iowa. A family connection is also present as Rachel Antonoff’s brother Jack is dating Lena Dunham and Hannah has already worn Rachel Antonoff on the show including some very lovely shoes in season 2. As always the Fantasy Costuming selections are inspired by the costume design from the show in question – Jenn Rogien- and are in no way suggesting this character should wear a specific item mentioned.

Rachel Antonoff ovariesA sweater with the female reproductive system pretty much screams Hannah as it is comfy and a little daring. Of course Hannah and Lena are not the same person, but it is pretty safe to say they hold similar views on the reproductive rights of women.

Rachel AntonoffContinuing the tradition of Hannah wearing very cute dresses on occasions such as at Jessa’s wedding, her birthday, dinner with her parents and after she got her first big paycheck with this floral offering. For more Hannah picks check out the gallery at the bottom of the page.

Rachel Antonoff pleatsPleats and tartan for Shoshanna as a reaction to marathoning Outlander and trying to find her very own Jamie. Shoshanna is the one who changes her look the most dressing with a theme or occasion in mind.

Rachel Antonoff cropAnd this is more party wear for Shosh with a matching polka dot crop and skirt number.

Rachel Antonoff RTW 2015Marnie is trying to do the whole boho folk singer thing but we all know she is a preppy girl at heart.

Rachel Antonoff summer dressAnd here is something for Marnie and a return to the beach house for the sophisticated bonding trip she desired. Okay that probably won’t happen but she can still wear this is flirty girly frock.

Rachel Antonoff maxi dressBotany is one of Rachel Antonoff’s points of reference here and Jessa has been known to rock a hippy-esque maxi dress (okay maybe to hide Jemima Kirke’s pregnancy).

Check out the gallery below for more looks for Hannah from Rachel Antonoff’s Fall 2015 collection and stay tuned for more NYFW Fantasy Costuming.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Feb

New York Fashion Week has just kicked off and will dominate TV Ate My Wardrobe over the next few days; this edition of “Out of the Box” includes a couple of NYFW moments, magazine covers/editorials and other red carpet events.

Elizabeth BanksElizabeth Banks made our Best of 2014 “Out of the Box” list and here she is at the Berlin Film Festival for Love & Mercy in another stunning Elie Saab Couture gown. I cannot wait for the Pitch Perfect 2 promo train.

Tracee Ellis Ross EssenceTracee Ellis Ross looks like she is about to play a killer and super stylish game of tennis on the cover of Essence and I love it.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw Town & CountryTown & Country delivers another beautiful editorial this time for the US edition and featuring Gugu Mbatha-Raw. In addition to these amazing shots Mbatha-Raw gives a good style message to live by “It’s important to know that it’s okay to be your natural self. It’s also okay to dress up and wear makeup and hair extensions if you want, so long as you don’t feel like you need that or will be worthless without it. The point is, it should be a choice.”

Laverne CoxA celeb filled runway at the Go Red for Women event and Laverne Cox works her Donna Karan gown by turning the sheer cape into a twirling sensation.

SJPSuper floaty pink dress, sleeveless check wraparound coat; this is SJP NYFW perfection when unveiling her new shoe collection with Tome this week.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Best of 2014 Part 1

26 Dec

Time to look back at the many amazing outfits that have featured on “Out of the Box” and this year we are splitting it over two parts due to the high volume of incredible looks. There are going to be a variety of categories and a whole host of TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites.

Best Magazine Cover

out 100 Samira WileyA lot of magazine covers have graced these pages this year but none took our breath away quite like Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley on the cover of the 20th anniversary issue of the Out100.

Best February NYFW Runway Watching

Solange at MillyI love everything about this super bold color ensemble from Solange. Even that feathered bag.

Best Pleated

Aubrey PlazaI wrote a whole thing the other day about how I had never worn leather aside from shoes and bags; while leather jackets are still super intimidating I’m pretty sure a pleated leather skirt would be in my wheelhouse. Aubrey Plaza does pattern and pleats well.

Best Red Lip Color

Keri RussellKeri Russell appeared in Brooklyn Magazine back in September and here she wears Urban Decay’s 24/7 lip liner “69,” which has become a red lip color staple in my makeup bag.

Best Summer TCA

Diane Kruger TCAAt The Bridge TCA panel (*sob* that it didn’t get renewed) Diane Kruger stunned in this color block Roksanda frock. Super stylish and effortless chic from a TV Ate My Wardrobe staple.

Best High Waisted Shorts

Karen Gillan KimmelI’m still pretty heartbroken about Selfie’s premature end and instead of dwelling on that sadness; here is Karen Gillan on her way into Jimmy Kimmel Live! from October in a perfect sidewalk strutting ensemble.

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Sep

A busy week with a whole host of events such as the Toronto International Film Festival, New York Fashion Week, the US Open and fall TV shindigs. We’ve got the best looks from these events – except for NYFW runway watching style which has separate posts here and here – and there’s been a lot of game stepping up fashion wise. It’s not surprising then that this is TV Ate My Wardrobe’s biggest “Out of the Box” post since we started over a year ago.

Tina FeyStarting with Tina Fey at TIFF in a gorgeous midnight-blue Temperley London frock at the This is Where I Leave You press conference and she is serving up a whole lot of confidence and glam. A pretty dress is a pretty dress, however one thing a lot of these dresses have in common this week is fabric that is textured in a manner that makes them stand out beyond the print or cut of the silhouette.

Tina Fey TIFFI couldn’t choose between the two Tina Fey TIFF dresses and this Christian Siriano number is doing the play on texture in an even more striking and overt manner. As with the Temperley London this is very much in the Tina Fey wheelhouse, but it stands out thanks to the embossing. Both the hair up retro style and the more relaxed hair down approach work for their respective outfits.

Kristen WiigThe dude in the background seems like he is way into this Suno dress Kristen Wiig is wearing at the Welcome to Me premiere at TIFF and so am I. The mixture of stripes and florals is not something everyone can pull off and Wiig is hitting the mark on this occasion (I can also picture it on Diane Kruger, because Diane Kruger). The print is giving off an impression of pleating on the skirt and this is one of my current clothing obsessions.

Greta GerwigSo How I Met Your Dad didn’t happen and while I would have loved to see Greta Gerwig on TV in a way I am glad it isn’t this particular project, I hope it doesn’t make her run from future TV ventures. Appearing at the While We Were Young TIFF premiere Gerwig looks super cute in a swirly metallic patterned Prabal Gurung frock.

Chelsea PerettiMoving on to the Fox Fall Eco-Casino party and first up Chelsea Peretti in charcoal grey. I really love this and I’m extra excited that I will get to talk about Gina’s top notch sweater game on Brooklyn Nine-Nine very soon.

Hannah SimonePockets! Hannah Simone has had a busy week so while this dress is not setting the world on fire, it’s perfectly lovely and the pockets give it an extra edge.

Zooey DeschanelIt is after Labor Day and Zooey Deschanel continues to wear white *gasp* Eh, I don’t know if anyone really pays attention to that ‘rule’ anymore and this is another example of casual, but cute attire from the New Girl star. I especially like the black waist detail – though I really want to see what it looks like from the back – and I applaud the kitten heel choice. A bold lip color would really set the whole thing off.

Jess WeixlerInStyle celebrated 20 years with a lavish and appropriately stylish bash including Jess Weixler in a beautiful silk gown (plus pockets) with contrasting prints. This is also the ideal time to mention The Good Wife returns in a week (Sunday, 21) and Robyn is another character who makes me want all the sweaters.

Yvonne StrahovskiIn textured dress trend triumph is Yvonne Strahovski; I love how unique this with the leather accents and the blue ring detail. Strahovski also had one of my favorite runway watching looks earlier this week at the Naeem Khan show.

Keke PalmerIt’s been a big week for Keke Palmer as she became the first African-American Cinderella on Broadway and here she is at the InStyle party looking super chic in a Etre Cécile tank top paired with a beautiful icy (and you guessed it textured/pocketed) Mantu skirt.

Lizzy CaplanAfter all that glitz and glam we will leave you with the best relaxed look of the week with Lizzy Caplan at the US Open in jeans and a stripy tank with a grey jumper tied around her waist. Red lip color really is the best way to make even the most chilled outfit pop.
