Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Feb

The Black Panther press tour continues to brighten up the red carpet, talk show appearances and magazine covers. Award season marches on and New York Fashion Week has kicked off. And I thought January was a busy month. New York Fashion Week just kicked off, but Lupita Nyong’o delivered a runway style performance at Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week. Working the plastic trend in a Zeynep Arcay coat and Balmain striped top and pants; this is cool af.
More Lupita! And the Black Panther cast delivers on every continent. At the Seoul premiere, Lupita once again goes for a spin on the warrior vibe—as a nod to her character Nakia—but with added glitz and feathers in Ralph & Russo.

Michael B. Jordan does the all black suit thing and elevates it with an embossed print in Joseph Abboud, switching out slipper Louboutins for a leather pair. At the London premiere Danai Gurira put a bird on it and then some in a breathtaking Jean-Louis Sabaji Spring 2018 Couture gown. As with the LA premiere, attendees at London also celebrated African heritage with bold prints. Michaela Coel looks stunning.

I didn’t have the dress credits earlier, but Michaela Coel has since tweeted where this dress came from. Surprise! She made it.
At the DGA Awards, Aisha Tyler serves up super cool style, while proving that sparkly shoes and a red lip are always a good choice.I FINALLY SAW LADY BIRD.

And at the Oscar nominee luncheon—one of my fave award season events—this photo of Saoirse Ronan and Greta Gerwig sums up how this movie made me feel.

I have a fun Lady Bird related piece coming to TV Ate My Wardrobe so stay tuned. But yes I loved it and I love Greta’s Chanel tweed.“”The way this pair is looking at each other is how I would look if either Laura Dern or Timothée Chalamet were stood in front of me. Timothée continues to make great choices and as this chat with Frank Ocean proves, he also loves fashion (see more below).New York Fashion Week regular Jamie Chung gives great gingham jumpsuit at Stuart Weitzman. And at Noon by Noor, Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung are prepared for the outside chill in fun coats (particularly Chung’s furry number). Both are also giving me shoe envy. Expect much more NYFW in the next column.

Track. Suit. Nation. Athleisure at its finest. TC on backup.

A post shared by Elizabeth Chambers Hammer (@elizabethchambers) on

Le Tracksuit has taken on a life of its own, starting with Adidas spreading to Hugo Boss and now Armie Hammer’s wife Elizabeth Chambers is getting in on the athleisure train. I love a racing stripe on a fancy pant. May the CMBYN shenanigans never end.
“”Speaking of which, here is Timothée Chalamet serving up great face for V Man. The interview with Frank Ocean is a delight from start to finish, even if Ocean thinks that Chalamet was in Twentieth Century Women (he does look like that actor in all fairness).  “”What a cover! This is an incredibly striking shot of Chadwick Boseman as he stares directly into your soul for Time.

And the opening of Jamil Smith’s essay on Black Panther underscores why this movie is so important:

“If you are reading this and you are white, seeing people who look like you in mass media probably isn’t something you think about often. Every day, the culture reflects not only you but nearly infinite versions of you—executives, poets, garbage collectors, soldiers, nurses and so on. The world shows you that your possibilities are boundless. Now, after a brief respite, you again have a President.

Those of us who are not white have considerably more trouble not only finding representation of ourselves in mass media and other arenas of public life, but also finding representation that indicates that our humanity is multifaceted. Relating to characters onscreen is necessary not merely for us to feel seen and understood, but also for others who need to see and understand us. When it doesn’t happen, we are all the poorer for it.”

And for British GQ Michael B. Jordan pays homage to the Black Panther Party in a leather coat, black turtleneck and beret. Another incredibly striking visual to celebrate the release of Black Panther. Jordan also discusses why movies like Black Panther matter:

“We’re giving black people power, royalty – we don’t gotta be crackheads or gangbangers, selling drugs or robbing people. We don’t have to be comic relief. We can be superheroes. Imagine what that’s going to do to the imagination and ambition of kids watching these movies. That’s the real impact of this film.”

New York Fashion Week Star Style at Monique Lhuillier

14 Sep

TV stars aplenty at the Monique Lhuillier show on Saturday wearing a variety of gorgeous frocks from floral to lace. The show itself boasted plenty of bold and feminine looks for spring with several cute mini dresses standing out as well as a crop top/skirt combo I can definitely picture Jenny Slate rocking.

Here are my favorites before we delve into who was at the show.

Monique L NYFW SS Monique L NYFW Monique L Monique LhuillierThe front row crowd were all wearing Monique Lhuillier from recent Fall and Resort collections with plenty of color, pattern and structured silhouettes.

Gillian JacobsGillian Jacobs is my personal standout in this beautiful floral print and I love the dash of red from her nails as she poses up a storm.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ashley MadekweChartreuse is a really difficult color to pull off and Ashley Madekwe is doing just this with plenty of poise as she watches the runway. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is working a very fun floral shirt dress, which is actually two pieces tied up in the middle.

Jamie ChungThis color is incredible on Jamie Chung and is making me feel satin friendly (although the sheer panel is not winning me over).

Bella Thorne and Skylar SamuelsThe Duff reunion ahoy and both Bella Thorne and Skyler Samuels are wearing frocks from the Resort 2016 collection with flowers and lace being strong themes throughout. Samuels is about to appear on screens in probably my most anticipated new show of fall in Scream Queens (not sure how that became the case) and those yellow pumps are everything.

Jessica LowndesMore lace for Jessica Lowndes and the dash of pink lip color is just the right thing to brighten up this outfit. I also like how many Gillian Jacobs background appearances there are.

New York Fashion Week: Best of the Runway Watching Looks Part 2

10 Sep

New York Fashion Week continues to draw a plethora of famous faces to the front rows of runway shows and this gives us a whole lot of new looks to pour over. This is the second “Best of the Runway Watching” column and you can find the OITNB cast heavy first take here.

The Alice + Olivia show was a particularly big draw for TV/film starlets with a lot of them wearing items that have just hit Alicia + Olivia stores/online. We will be linking to those as you might want to add them to your wish list.

NYFW YvonneAt Naeem Khan the front row is all intricate pattern and bold designs much like the intricate beading and color on display on the runway. All decked out in Naeem Khan are Jamie Chung (she has been a heavy presence this week and she’s the only person to feature on both ‘Best of’ lists), Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Yvonne Strahovski, Connie Britton, and Padma Lakshmi. I am especially drawn to Strahovski’s stunning blue and yellow kaleidoscope-print frock and of course Connie Britton in general.

Kiernan Shipka in pantsIt’s a rare sight to see Kiernan Shipka at an event in pants, but here she is at Zac Posen in another sartorial delight. The structure of the top is unusual in its angles and yet it works with the patterned detail of her bottom half.

Kiernan ShipkaAt Tory Burch, Kiernan Shipka wore something more in line with her usual red carpet styling in a cute floral frock. Even though it’s entirely age appropriate I do have to remind myself that she is only 14 years old and then I feel all protective; Hollywood be good to her.

Anna ChlumskyIt might be due to the colors and pattern, but there is a little something Flamenco dancer about Anna Chlumsky’s outfit at Zac Posen. I’m swung by the texture of the red sweater (SO excited for sweater season) and Chlumsky’s striking red lip color. Plus she’ s pretty great so that helps me get passed the aspects of the outfit that are less pleasing.

Willow ShieldsThe rest of the “Best of” entries come from the Alice + Olivia event; up first is another teen delight with Willow Shields (Prim from The Hunger Games) striking a pose worthy of Wonder Woman in a very cute ballerina button down. The black and white patterned shoes peaking out are a cool touch.

Lynsey FonsecaThis might be my favorite from the Alice + Olivia clothes on display at this show and Lyndsy Fonseca deserves a dress this pretty after being subjected to the longest tale of how someone met their spouse (Fonseca is one of Ted’s kids on HIMYM). The bold green jacquard design also has the all important pocket detail.

Katie ChungAnother dress you could wear for day/night events and the only thing not quite working with Katie Chang’s outfit is her meh shoe color. The gold and black design of this gown and the cinched in waist make this another standout from Alice + Olivia.

Jamie ChungJamie Chung pairs an edgy leather cropped fitting tank  with the super girly lip covered skirt and scarlet ankle strap heals. It’s a fun, flirty outfit and I’m half expecting to see this skirt show up on either The Mindy Project or New Girl.

Holland RodenDoing classic black and white is Teen Wolf’s Holland Roden, adding flare with a pair of winking heels. Yep her shoes have faces on them and they are pretty awesome (and maybe 1% creepy).

Jennifer MorrisonA few weeks ago I went into a ridiculous amount of stores (10+) looking for a red belt like the one Jennifer Morrison is wearing and I did not find a single thin red belt. Luckily I got one for my birthday otherwise I would be giving this photo all the coveting side eye. I’m glad I don’t have to do this as it’s a really lovely outfit and another chance to see the red heels that I’m now after.

Jessica Lowndes A+OThis is one ornate gown complete with tassels, lace, beading and taffeta; while it might overwhelm the wearer, Jessica Lowndes looks resplendent.

New York Fashion Week: Best of the Runway Watching Looks Part 1

8 Sep

The new TV season is about to start and a good way to get word out about these shows is to have the stars attend New York Fashion week or as with the women from Orange is the New Black they are still enjoying their well deserved victory lap. Whatever the reason there are plenty of famous attendants showing off their own style (good or bad) while also taking in what they will be wearing in the future.

Rather than waiting until the end of the week with “Out of the Box” here are some of the best looks from the first half of NYFW.

SJPSarah Jessica Parker goes with NYFW like Carrie Bradshaw does with Manolo Blahniks and SJP wore this is beautiful Preen dress to the Lexus Design Disrupted event. The metallic pumps from her own SJP collection work like a charm against the bold color of this frock.

Allison Williams DVFAt the Diane von Furstenberg show Allison Williams was lucky enough to wear something from the Spring 2015 RTW collection; this white dress with a gingham detail is of the usual Allison Williams girly styling without being too on the nose a la her Emmys dress. Bonus lip color points.

Uzo Aduba Christian SirianoUzo Aduba continues her style streak moving away from 70s secretary bowed chic (which I love) to this shimmery art deco looking delight at the Christian Siriano show.

Jackie Cruz, Selenis Leyva, amanda WarrenAduba’s OITNB co-stars Selenis Leyva, Jackie Cruz, Kimiko Glenn along with The Leftovers’ Amanda Warren showed off a range of bold styles at Nicole Miller. Kimiko Glenn kept things simple chic in a grey pencil skirt and crop sweater, while Cruz and Leyva went for the bold patterned look and Warren had a chest of feathers.

Margarita LevievaAt the same event former Revenge star Margarita Levieva wore some really meh nude pumps, but made up for it in a vermillion color dress with cut out side panels.

Katie CassidyThe Nicole Miller show was the place to be and Katie Cassidy demonstrates how to do runway watching in a super casual comfy manner (ok those shoes probably hurt) while still looking chic.

AnnaSophia RobbHere’s a guide to wearing your jacket on your shoulders as told in two parts at the Rebecca Minkoff runway show. First up AnnaSophia Robb and I’m still not over the Carrie Diaries cancellation even if Austin Butler and his hair will be making their way to Arrow. I am beyond in love with this geometric multicolored pleated skirt.

Jamie ChungJamie Chung could be a Pink Lady with this jacket slung over her shoulders, but it’s her print dress and blue bag that I’m coveting while ignoring whatever clunky strappy shoes she is wearing.
