Burberry Christmas Campaign Celebrates Founder in Star-Studded Campaign

7 Nov

Burberry’s Christmas campaign video starring Domhnall Gleeson, Sienna Miller, Lily James and Dominic West celebrating founder Thomas Burberry and the 160th anniversary of the brand is the mini-series I now want to see.burberryCrossing the lines of fact and fiction there are Burberry’s real contributions including the now iconic trench-coat, which begun life in the actual trenches. Burberry as provided Sir Ernest Shackleton with clothing fit for polar exploration; Dominic West plays Shackleton in this trailer and you can see the real man wearing Burberry here. Both romantic love interests played by Sienna Miller and Lily James are romantic constructions of the campaign and Miller gets to dramatically sashay away in a caped hooded stunner while James’ character Betty Dawson is inspired by Betty Kirby-Green. In 1937 Kirby-Green flew in Burberry clothing and in a plane sponsored by Burberry alongside A.E. Clouston on a round trip from England to Cape Town breaking records.

Burberry chief creative and chief executive officer, Christopher Bailey explains that:

“This Christmas, as we celebrate our 160th anniversary we wanted to tell the story of Thomas Burberry – pioneer, inventor, innovator, and the man behind the iconic trench coat – in our own words. The film we have made is a brief glimpse inspired by his full and extraordinary life, which threaded its way through the history of the twentieth century in all its tumultuous highs and lows. To do justice to this story, we turned to a team of truly great twenty- first century British talent: Asif Kapadia, a director whose work I admire enormously, and a cast of our brightest and our best actors: Domhnall Gleeson, Sienna Miller, Dominic West and Lily James.”

Watch the trailer below and start wondering which network/streaming platform would be best suited for the mini-series of Thomas Burberry.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

3 Nov

A mostly casual “Out of the Box” this week with plenty of panel outfits on offer with a dash of award show performance ensembles, an important makeup campaign, magazine editorials and a lovely treat to end on. keri-russellThe 92 Y and Hollywood Reporter evening with The Americans didn’t give anything away for season 5, but there was a whole lot of insight and fun including a discussion about Keri Russell’s “Emmy vein” and you can read all about it here.

What I didn’t mention is this spot on panel attire in that it is super casual with a dash of fancy with a pair of white Louboutins. Also an ideal fall sweater/skinny jeans pairing and you could easily switch the pumps for boots; great daytime casual.mandy-mooreAt Entertainment Weekly’s PopFest Mandy Moore also does the heels/jeans thing dressing it up with a blazer; giving great vertical stripe and light pink lip color. I haven’t seen any of This is Us yet because Too Much TV and I am impressed that I don’t know what the whole twist is yet. *cue me finding out later today*amanda-peetFor my honeymoon I bought two new striped tops and then added to my collection with yet another while on this trip; I am very much part of the “you can never have enough striped tops” school. Amanda Peet is giving classic stripes and skinny jeans and yep, I’m here for it.crazy-ex-girlfriendThe Crazy-Ex Girlfriend cast delivering on a very active panel and it might only be two-episodes in, but this new season is magical on every level. dixie-chicks-and-beyonce“Daddy Lessons” is up there as one of my most played songs this year from both “Lemonade” and the Dixie Chicks tour so when Beyoncé played with the Dixie Chicks at the 2016 CMA Awards it was the perfect marriage over both versions. This was a phenomenal performance and I was smiling so much throughout my cheeks began to hurt by the end.

And you can get a free download of this song from Soundcloud! Thanks guys!

A couple of months ago MAC teamed up with Taraji P. Henson for a limited edition collection and gave us this fierce as fuck campaign image. Now MAC has announced that come February 2017, Henson and her Empire co-star Jussie Smollett will be ambassadors for their Viva Glam line. Viva Glam started in 1994 and 100 percent of proceeds from a Viva Glam MAC product have gone to the MAC AIDS Fund raising $430 million in sales.

This is a really striking image of the pair and that lip color sure looks incredible. I will definitely be adding to my collection when it is released in February.genevieve-angelsonIn this landscape of too much TV when new full seasons are released on streaming platform there is often a mixture of excitement and dread (today it is The Crown delivering these feelings). Good Girls Revolt is one such project (especially as my Gilmore Girls catch-up continues) and I am thoroughly enjoying this drama, the female friendships and of course the costuming. Star Genevieve Angelson discusses the clothing aspect in Interview magazine and the accompanying photoshoot includes some super high waisted pant treats.

“There are the romantic relationships in the script, but my personal romantic relationship was with the costume designer. We would create names for certain outfits… I had a jumpsuit I named Larry. I was just waiting for the episode where Larry would come out and we would be together. This is weird now, isn’t it? I’ve anthropomorphized a jumpsuit.”

I am looking forward to seeing Larry in action and that seems like a totally appropriate jumpsuit name.jake-gyllenhaalBecause sometimes the perfect outfit involves a grey T-shirt, sunglasses and a beardy Jake Gyllenhaal waving while at Jimmy Kimmel Live!

TV Rewind: Gilmore Girls, Season 4

2 Nov

img_4436Julie: This is, I think, the best season of Gilmore Girls. Maybe. They’re all good. Who am I kidding? But season four is extraordinarily good. A big part of that is because both girls are thrown so far out of their comfort zones. Lorelai is finally realizing her dream of owning an inn. And Rory is starting college.

I know that the BIG THING happens at the end of the season, but I want to start off talking about Rory, who is now a freshman at Yale. I love how they handle her progression from sheltered high schooler to slightly less sheltered college student. She doesn’t get to school and immediately start partying and hooking up with random guys. She’s still Rory. She’s more interested in taking a full course load than being social.

And she struggles with the social, if quietly. While Paris is out there stringing along one boyfriend while hooking up with an elderly professor, Rory is keeping to herself a bit. She tries and fails to go on a date and ask out a guy. She strikes out on spring break. She seems to me a little overwhelmed by the process of dating.img_4428And I think that’s why she inevitably starts chatting up Dean again. (Ugh.) Dean’s a known quantity. Dean is safe. Yeah, Dean is married, but he’s still RORY’S DEAN. (Double ugh.)

There’s a brief almost-dalliance with Jess, which actually feels reasonable in the face of (ugh) hooking up with Dean again, but Rory holds her own against Jess–telling him to get out of her life, while completely letting Dean into both her life and her pants.

I was totally thrown (and grossed out) by Rory losing her virginity to Dean. I actually thought maybe she and Jess were going to hook up in the penultimate episode, when he came to her dorm room and she let him in. I thought we were in for some angry-passionate hooking up there, but no. She stood her ground and kicked him out. And, to Jess’s credit, he left.

But then Dean. DEAN! He (ew, what?) followed her back to her mom’s house, where she was picking up CDs, and then (ew) boning. And then, even more ew, she expected her mom to be happy about the situation, which Lorelai was NOT. Because her daughter is now an adulteress. For Dean. DEAN. Ew.

I think you can tell where I stand on this, though as much as I hate Dean and Rory with Dean, I love that the show makes her such a moron when it comes to romance. She’s a bad decision machine in the love department. Very book smart, but horrible at picking guys.

How do you feel about what Rory got up to this season?img_4360Emma: It’s funny because this is the season that took a few episodes to click with me and I don’t know if that is because I started it just before my wedding and so maybe I was in a distracted head space, but post-honeymoon it all fell into place and I have enjoyed the hell out of this season even with the terrible Rory romantic decision.

I agree with you that taking both Rory and Lorelai out of their comfort zones is a big plus and it keeps everything fresh. Even though Yale is a short drive from Stars Hollow, Rory still has to try new things and she stumbles at times. Part of this is the amount of pressure she puts on herself academically and it is heartbreaking when she has her big spiral while Lorelai is also having her own moment of self-doubt. It doesn’t help that they are playing a game of phone tag and communicating via voicemail, but story wise it is important to show them coping without each other no matter how ineffective it might be. And then the fact that both lie to the other about how fine everything is.

Season 3 ended with a strong non-guy focus and for the majority of season 4 Rory doesn’t have a whole lot going on in that department (as she keeps getting reminded of). There have been a couple of awkward potentials including the preppy guy she wasn’t into and Smith Laundry Room guy who declines her coffee invitation and who she then thinks is spreading stories about how into him she is. Then there is Marty, the guy who passed out naked in her corridor after a party, the dude her grandmother sets her up with and that leads her back to a guy from her past. Jess pops in and out declaring his love and it is no wonder that she tells him to leave. I also half figured they might hook up and I actually thought the Dean thing was going to happen sooner than it did.

Urgh, the Dean thing. Why Rory? Well I know why and he represents everything that is familiar and predictable even though he is married. Not to mention that Dean should never have got married in the first place; especially when he is drunkenly mumbling Rory’s name the night before causing Luke to tell Rory not to go to the wedding (which looks straight out of the late 70s).img_4367Part of me wondered if they would go the Felicity route where her first time is with someone who isn’t a main love interest and I love that approach, but alas it had to be Dean because even though there are so many similarities between Rory and Felicity, Rory is far more reserved/cautious in the love department. Dean continues to be the worst in every way possible and that isn’t even factoring in his terrible facial hair this season. I’m actually pleased both Dean and Jess had such reduced roles this year as we get to see Rory in the full throws of her college experience including her job at the paper and navigating roommate drama. This also felt like the most balanced we have seen Rory’s friendships with both Paris and Lane, part of this comes from both these characters getting their own stuff to do and not just being there to service Rory as a character.

So let’s get into that final discussion between Lorelai and Rory. Was Lorelai overreacting or saying the exact thing Rory needed to hear in that moment?img_4429Julie: That final conversation was HEARTBREAKING for me. Especially looking at it from the mother’s perspective. Lorelai has done such a good job of raising Rory (that hasn’t changed), and I am assuming a big part of her figured she wouldn’t have to worry about Rory making dumb decisions like this. And this decision was so, so dumb. It forces Lorelai to see her daughter differently, and to see Dean differently. And the fact that Rory doesn’t automatically see what a brazenly stupid decision this was makes it that much worse.

That said, I still continue to love that the writers have no problem making Rory not perfect. She gets good grades and she does the right thing, except when it comes to her love life (a theme that continues through the rest of the show…)

I suppose it was inevitable that Rory would do something rash like this. She went on spring break and watched documentaries. The most scandalous thing she did was let her friend drunk dial Dean (Danger! Danger!). She kicked Jess out of her dorm room before making that mistake. She didn’t get in the drunk car with her grandmother’s friend. She made all the “good” decisions, except for this one thing with Dean, which was a doozy.img_4441But enough about Dean. Let’s talk about something nice for a change–Luke and Lorelai and their LOVE. OMG.

I had always assumed that they’d just have a moment where they kiss out of nowhere or something, so I was surprised by how this played out. Luke saw her face while listening to a self-help date, and instead of being upfront with her, he asked her to his sister’s wedding. It was such a Luke move–asking her to the wedding, and then out on another date, without ever discussing what was going on. I loved that Lorelai had to stop and put it all together–is she dating Luke?

And the steps leading up to the OMG first kiss, were so lovely. The dance! Her admitting that maybe the best part of the wedding was the dance!

The kiss itself gave me chills, both the first time and rewatching it. Too bad it had to be spoiled, first by Kirk, then by DEAN.

What did you think about the kiss?img_4432Emma: I figured when Lorelai came home she was going to walk in on the act, not the after but the one they went for was so much better because it is all about Rory doing something spontaneous. In Rory’s mind Dean is still the guy who was her first boyfriend and she feels like she has some sense of ownership in the very pre-school argument of ‘he was mine first.’ This is her justification for the sleeping with a married guy thing and it does not withstand Lorelai’s questions. It’s a real heartbreaker and no matter how much I dislike Dean (and that is a lot) it is still really shitty that this huge thing happened for Rory and it is instantly tainted. But I guess Rory made (and unmade) that particularly bed.

One thing I also want to say before I comment on the romantic thing at the opposite end of this romance spectrum and one issue is how underwritten Lindsay is. The actress playing her is someone who I thought was excellent on an all too brief stint on The Vampire Diaries; super charming and instantly likable. Lindsay is none of these things and is pretty much there to act like the kind of wife Dean was talking about wanting. Except he doesn’t and all they do is bicker or she brings him lunch at the inn. It is also weird that she doesn’t have a job so points to Rory for pointing that out.img_4437Moving on to the thing that I was hoping would FINALLY happen this season and it did! The Luke and Lorelai will they/won’t they dance included an actual dance (which was a season highlight for me) and there’s been a lot of their usual back and forth banter, arguments about significant others (urgh Nicole) and being there for each other in their time of need. It is kinda cute how Luke finally realized how he actually feels and I really like how they ended up getting to this inevitable place.

TV first kisses between will they/won’t they couples are an important milestone and they nail this one. It is full of heat and it makes so much sense that it comes in the middle of this half kind of argument of ‘what the hell is going on between us?’ In true Lorelai fashion another one of her love interests threatens to ruin this early stage and we’ve seen it before with Christopher. Christopher always has a habit of showing up at the wrong time. This time it is Jason who is back to win Lorelai’s heart and while he is another to add to the great Lorelai boyfriends list – unlike Rory, Lorelai gets the interesting guys – he’s no Luke. Thankfully he needs to go to the bathroom and Luke takes this moment to ask what the hell is going on?

Yes Kirk runs through naked and screaming, but I was concerned that either Jason would interrupt or Kirk would before the kiss happened. And we got not one, but two! And I’m so glad they both got to initiate. So kudos Gilmore Girls writers, you made us wait four years but you stuck the landing. The chemistry between Lauren Graham and Scott Patterson is off the charts here.

What did you make of Jason?img_4380Julie: I suppose underwriting Lindsay was a way to justify what Rory did? If we knew her better and sympathized with her more, Rory hooking up with Dean would be unforgivable. That said, I did ache for her. She was TRYING with Dean. She wasn’t working (which was problematic, especially because it would’ve given her something else to with her brain), but she was trying to make her home life with Dean as nice as possible. It didn’t work.

As far as Digger goes, he was a (another) decent guy for Lorelai. He was funny and smart and just as bitter about their rich upbringing as she is. One thing I find so interesting about this show–and both women’s relationships–is how underplayed the notion of “soul mate” is. I think we all believe that Luke is her OTP, but absent him, I could see her ending up with Christopher, Max, or Jason. Maybe that’s a testament to how adaptable and cool Lorelai is, or maybe it’s just a realistic portrayal of how the world is. Things didn’t work out with the other guys because the timing wasn’t right (or because he decided to sue her parents), and who knows how things will work out with Luke. They seem perfect together, but they’re not perfect people.

And Rory, too, if she had stayed with Dean, her life would go one way; with Jess, another.

Speaking of soulmates, we were also treated to Paris’s relationship with Basil Exposition. What did you think about her hooking up with a professor, an OLD professor?img_4424Emma: Let’s start with a game of F/M/K with Lorelai’s non-Luke main love interests? So Christopher, Max and Jason .

It was clear that Jason would be sticking around because the actor was in the opening credits and this brings me to why I love these very traditional credits as I love spotting whom has been upgraded to a regular and what new snapshots from the series are added each year and which ones are irreplaceable (the S1 birthday hug for example).

When he was introduced as a business partner for Richard I was a bit eh on him, but as soon as he interacted with Lorelai the spark sad instant and it became obvious why he might be the kind of dude she might end up with. As you mention they are from the same world and they both have fractious relationships with their parents. He has a cute dog, a sleep issue that means Lorelai gets to spend the night in a guest room full of everything you could ever want (although the TV bed combo is super ugly), he cooks breakfast and he’s a lot of fun. He does have a lot of slightly oversized cream sweaters that he should probably trade in.

Of course there is a time limit on this relationship and I wonder what it is a like as an actor to get a main credits part, but know that it won’t be for the duration of the show?

Jason is at least more developed than Nicole and it really makes no sense for Luke to get back with her other than to give him someone who isn’t Lorelai for a portion of the season. The brief amount of time they are happy is basically a set up for a Luke/Lorelai argument when Luke moves in with Nicole and doesn’t tell Lorelai. It goes south fast because of course and the divorce is a done thing leaving the door wide open.img_4430Ahh yes the professor and Paris is definitely one for going all in even if this means that Jamie gets brutally dumped on his birthday. Rory getting Lorelai to guess the age was fun, but I was generally a bit eh on this storyline and I think Paris deserves more. The best of Paris occurred during the spring break episode and we got our Rory/Paris OTP moment. The episode where he has his health scare was well played as was Rory’s concern that she got a great grade because of who her roommate is.

One other relationship was a bit of roller coaster this season and that was Richard and Emily as business and other skeletons threaten this seemingly rocksteady union. Was this a surprise for you?img_4393Julie: Ha! F/M/K — This is actually tough! I would fuck Max, marry Luke, and kill Jason. No offense, Jason. I actually considered marrying him because he has a lot of fun toys, but then I’d have to kill either Max or Luke, and I don’t want to do that. I wonder if they thought Jason might stick around longer, but just as Richard’s business partner. Obviously, he and Lorelai couldn’t stay together forever, but I wonder if the writers didn’t go into this with the intention of keeping him around as an ex, like Chris. I could’ve seen them going either way with this, but I like where they took the story instead, making Richard kind of a, well, dick.

Since the less said about Nicole the better (and, yeah, Paris needs something new to do). Since I just mentioned Richard, I think the time is right to talk about his relationship with Emily. This stuff was rough and sad, but also completely emotionally compelling. Emily has always been the dutiful wife and that status was challenged this year–with Jason running the social business stuff differently that she would have and with Trix kicking the bucket and Emily finding out that she tried to get Richard to leave her. Emily needs some time to herself, I think, to figure out who she is outside of Richard. And Richard needs to learn to appreciate what Emily does for him and who she is to him.

I thought it was really interesting watching them try to keep the split from Rory and Lorelai. That felt completely real, and also marked the first time they were absent for Friday night dinner. They were just too distracted. And I liked Lorelai trying to Parent Trap them back together — because as frustrating as she finds them, she doesn’t want her mom and dad to split up. The fact that this all comes to a head at the opening of the inn was perfect.

How did you feel about Richard and Emily?img_4426Emma: If we take Luke out of the F/M/K it becomes harder and I *think* I would marry Jason, fuck Max and kill Christopher. Sorry for killing your dad, Rory. As you pointed out, Jason does have the best toys, Max has the heat and Christopher is totally unreliable.

When Richard first laid out the plan I figured he was double crossing Jason’s dad and the whole screwing over Jason was a ruse. Alas, Richard was just being a business dick and in part it feels like a way to clear the path for Luke while also showing the rare non friendly side of Richard. It is a side of Richard we have seen before and it is always so jarring as Emily is normally the schemer.

I found the whole Emily/Richard marriage problems to be really upsetting because they seem like a forever couple, but I also love that they went down this path. Emily is feeling at a loss for a couple of reasons this season; there’s the whole Trix letter and this spiral is so wonderfully carefree. The image of Emily day drinking, smoking and reading a romance novel while sprawled on the couch in her night gown is a Top 5 Emily moment for me (and also my current Twitter cover photo). It’s the most un-Emily while being the most Emily and she’s so unbothered about helping arrange the funereal leaving it all to Lorelai as Richard has also fallen apart.img_4405Richard is a mess because his last conversation with Trix was one that involved a whole lot of shouting and for all the shit Trix has said over dinner it took money and the insinuation that he is kind of a failure to prompt an outburst. I also love that they recast Marion from Happy Days as Trix’s cousin (even if I had to check IMDb to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind).

The real Emily/Richard issue stems from his job and this is the reason for their last period of unhappiness. This time Richard is working too much and rather than being angry that he is being forced out, Emily’s concern comes from his new partnership (later followed by his return to his old firm) and that she is becoming obsolete. Her role as party planner is no longer needed and she’s got to reassess everything. This spirals into a crazy shopping spree and a wonderful scene where Lorelai and Rory take Emily to the mall food court.

And much like the last time they fell out Lorelai uses the inn to get them back together. It worked the last time but right now they are too far gone for a simple trick. I like that there is no simple solution and Lorelai can’t just movie magic this relationship back together.

Let’s talk style and oh the mid ’00s continue to deliver on things I hope never come back including Juicy sweatpants (much to Emily’s horror), a weird take on Cher from Clueless style, bad jeans and a look that is very Rachel Green. These are a few of Lorelai’s big hits and Rory mostly stays safe in a look that is very a Felicity Porter. So many sweaters.

Any fashion highlights for you?img_4381 img_4369 img_4397 img_4376Julie: But Christopher is so pretty! I’d enjoy just looking at him. Before killing him. Because he’s not marrying material.

I know Emily has her issues, but I’d love for her to be my mom for a day, just so we could go shopping together and she could buy me all the things. I’d accept every handbag happily, Emily!

I know I had a few stashed in my mind for the fashion segment, but things are starting to get mixed up with Season 5, since I’m currently rewatching that. I loved Rory’s one-piece bathing suit and how her mom busted her balls about it. Rory is so delightfully young and modest.

Speaking of spring break, about as sexy and wild as she got, clothes-wise, was her off-the-shoulder shirt. I definitely had her boucle sweater (I’m guessing it was from J. Crew), but in…I think pink. I also had that big turtleneck Paris’ is wearing. Oh, and the turtleneck behind the girls.

As far as Lorelai goes, her pink coat is always everything. I thought she looked perfect in the dress and floral crown at Liz’s wedding.screenshot-2016-10-26-07-13-01 screenshot-2016-10-26-07-13-59 screenshot-2016-10-26-07-16-09 screenshot-2016-10-26-07-18-22Emma: That wedding look is a top Lorelai moment and it very much suited the whole burgeoning romance vibe. And it is nice to see a flower crown before music festivals ruined them for everyone. Otherwise I just wanted to mention a couple of now very familiar faces. First up Rami Malek and he is in Lane’s study group/the most adorable. Oh and while we’re on the subject of Lane, she finally revealed her true self to her mother or rather staying out all night caused Mrs Kim to go through her stuff and Lane moved out. Dave is of course gone because Adam Brody is on The OC now and the college reason is a good one to write him out. Although I don’t think they needed to do the long distance thing as it was obviously not going to stick. The marriage pot plot was a fun one and I love that Mrs Kim made up a story that Lane has held onto for so long that isn’t even a thing.img_4433The Lane/Mrs Kim relationship is an interesting one as it is the complete opposite of Lorelai and Rory and for a moment I thought Mrs Kim was going to be fine with Lane’s dropping out of college demands. I don’t know why I thought that and really Lane has committed the ultimate betrayal. Not because of the things she is into, but because of how long she has kept it secret. Anyway it made me sad, but also I am glad Lane can be Lane. And they got a Dave replacement who looks like he should be in a Bon Jovi tribute band and he is also a delight.

The other familiar face popped up during Dean’s very terrible bachelor party – oh hey Max Greenfield! He did not have many lines and we did not see him again. Also in this group is Kyle and he was one of the bullies in Freaks and Geeks. I only realized this when I was watching the Halloween episode for this piece.

Every teen show is connected.img_4398 img_4364Emma (again): I also meant to ask if you have watched the new Gilmore trailer? I haven’t and it has been hard not to click on EVERY link popping up on my TL. I am very excited about these new episodes (even without having finished the earlier seasons yet).img_8581The other thing I wanted to quickly mention was my trip to Luke’s on my last day in New York. A friend sent me a link of all the locations and one happened to be opposite The Strand. We were already going to be heading down there in the morning so I could get my final book haul from the trip (including Phoebe Robinson’s excellent “You Can’t Touch My Hair,” which came out the day before). The queue wasn’t too bad and it was a glorious sunny fall day; the perfect kind where the air is crisp but you don’t need more than a sweater. I got interviewed for NY1 but hopefully I was so dull it didn’t make it to air. And anyway I guess it is mostly people in hotels (like myself) that watch that channel.img_8583It was fun seeing the staff in the very Luke attire of plaid shirts and backwards caps and it was a fun, but pretty low key atmosphere. We got a couple of coffees and went to Union Square to sit in the sunshine. The rest of the day before we had to go back to The Jane to collect our luggage involved a little bit more shopping, one final trip to Joe’s for a slice, lots more walking (and we managed to crack 100 miles walked in 7 days) ). It was a very good ending to an amazing honeymoon.img_8587Emma (again, again):  This is also where I pull a Columbo with a ‘just one more thing.’

Did the internet suddenly go off in 2004 because it is mentioned A LOT as a BIG thing. A thing to do your shopping on, look things up etc. Richard gets wifi (and this does seem early as I had dial up for at least a few years after this). I noted down every time someone mentioned that they used the internet or suggested it to another character and it stuck out. As did everyone finally having cell phones with pagers almost fading into oblivion (other than the one Lorelai was given for when Sookie went into labor). It is funny seeing such a big change in tech and how much has changed in 12 years.img_4365Julie: I have watched the GG trailer, and I may have cried. I’m so excited. That’s going to be my Thanksgiving weekend, for sure.

I forgot about the Rami Malek sighting. He plays such a cute dork. And I totally missed Max Greenfield this time around (probably because I was watching the show while cooking or something). And the Dave replacement is Sebastian Bach, of Skid Row fame. I love him on the show, actually. His rocker/family man/sandwich store owner schtick is perfect for the small town vibe.

I’m so jealous you went to Luke’s! I could’ve been proactive and taken my ass to a neighborhood here where one had popped up, but I was lazy. You’re lucky that the Lukening happened while you were in New York. And your husband is definitely A+ for indulging this 🙂

The internet stuff was all over the place, which I thought was fitting. Richard and Emily (thanks to Jason) are just getting started on wi-fi, which feels right. I think they may have been slightly ahead of the times–trying to remember where I was and my computer situation at that time.

An Evening with The Americans: Panel Highlights

31 Oct

The Americans has just started shooting its penultimate season, but it won’t be back for at least a few months. To fill the wig and complicated relationship void showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields joined stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys at the 92nd Street Y as part of The Hollywood Reporter’s TV Talks panel series to discuss all things The Americans.

Regular readers will know how much I enjoy a good panel/roundtable (movie award season is coming!) and as this one has the bonus of being about my favorite show.the-americans-panelWeisberg and Fields are both very cautious when revealing anything that could be considered a spoiler so if you want some season 5 secrets then you might be disappointed. Instead what follows is a fascinating chat about the process of making this show from a writing and acting standpoint. It is also very funny at times with Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys displaying the kind of back and forth ease/humor that you would hope to expect from an IRL couple.

This includes Rhys joking about how he directed Russell during her big Paige confrontation scene in “The Magic of David Copperfield V: The Statue of Liberty Disappears” explaining that it was a “very simple scene to direct because Keri was pregnant at the time, so I just said pretend like you’re talking to me.” He also made Holly Taylor cry for real during this scene and he seems to feel very bad about this.

One of the most revealing aspects of this scene discussion was the behind the scenes debate in the editing room about whether to CGI out the vein which grew more inflamed on Russell’s face as Elizabeth’s anger at Paige increased. Joel Fields fought the corner of keeping it as it was and Russell loved that her face naturally looked like this as “You’re mad. Why would I want to be a pretty version of that? Like I want to be mad, but I want to be pretty.”

Russell also mentions that she understood why this conversation took place; “In everyone’s defense they were just trying to protect me.” It really is a stunning moment and physical performance from Keri Russell’s face parts so I am thrilled they didn’t alter it in post.matthew-rhys-and-keri-russellWhile talking about what it is like to work with the person you also go home with Rhys a little hesitantly at first takes the lead referring to the duality of it all “it’s amazing and it’s difficult. And it’s challenging and exciting. It’s everything.” And that so far they seem to be getting away with it.

One of the answers that surprised some of the audience was when Rhys responded to ‘Did Philip love Martha?’ with a quick “no.” In the way he played it (and I read it) his feelings for her were intrinsically linked to guilt rather than love and there is an aspect of caring, but not being in love. There were lots of Martha questions from the audience – all audience Qs should be done on cards as it really speeds up the process – and she is an important character.

Of course this being Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields they didn’t reveal whether they have plans to bring her back. The only new S5 info was that Philip and Elizabeth would have some different operations to deal with as most of their old ones wrapped up in S4. And there are some theories from the actors about how they would like to see the show wrap up including a dramatic interpretation by Matthew Rhys that has him going out in a blaze of glory.

It wouldn’t be an Americans panel without a little bit of wig/disguise chat and Russell and Rhys were asked to name their favorite disguise the other has worn. This resulted in a Margo Martindale anecdote that is worth clicking on the link below (and comes just before the hour mark).

Praise for Holly Taylor (and whether she has a real tattoo or not) was scattered throughout and how the Paige reveal scene is one of the hardest they have ever shot as it was a lot more heartbreaking on a personal level than Russell expected. This also allows Rhys to gift us with a Monty Python impression and for how serious this show is the set life sure sounds like a lot of fun.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Oct

A suit heavy week at “Out of the Box” much to my delight with a variety of styles on display including some with the word “jump” in them. There’s the Elle “Women in Hollywood” celebration, award season slowly coming into focus, talk show outfits and more magazine covers to enjoy in this selection of sartorial treats. constance-zimmer-and-shiri-applebyThe Elle “Women in Hollywood” shindig took place this week and this UnREAL duo kept up their recent fabulous outfit hot streak with a smoking hot La Mania jumpsuit and a L.K. Bennett metallic dreamy number. Both ladies are also crushing it on the lipstick front too.yara-shahidiKeeping on the jumpsuit track and Yara Shahidi joins the Magical Fashion Unicorn team as this Stella McCartney watercolor landscape vista should not work and yet it looks incredible on Shahidi.mads-mikkelsenI miss Hannibal.ruth-neggaOne item I really need in my wardrobe is a classic black jacket and Ruth Negga’s put a large lapel twist on this classic ladysuit at the Academy screening of Loving (a film which is high on my most anticipated list).

Negga also wore this ensemble for her same day appearance on The Tonight Show and it makes for an excellent talk show outfit. I have a feeling “Out of the Box” is going to be seeing a lot more of Ruth Negga.evan-rachel-woodGoing bold in a red Dolce & Gabbana ladysuit paired with super stacked Louboutins is Evan Rachel Wood while chatting Westworld on The Tonight Show; boy are we in love with this super sexy twist on the menswear theme which is dominating this week’s column.twdThe Talking Dead live event took place outside and with that the rain came to Los Angeles, but without that there wouldn’t be this great shot of Danai Gurira with umbrella in hand dreamily looking on at a bespectacled Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I’m not into Gurira’s entire look, but that blazer is killer. Particular in the super casual cool slung over her shoulders manner.tatiana-maslany-fashion-magazineAfter seeing Tatiana Maslany sporting a number of different styles and looks in Orphan Black this relatively fuss free cover shot from Fashion magazine is an effective way to show off Maslany’s versatility. In the interview, Maslany discusses a number of projects including Two Lovers and a Bear and Stronger along with her Emmy award winning performance on Orphan Black. Yesterday I mentioned that Helena is my probably my favorite clone and here is what she had to say about inhabiting this role:

“When I first saw myself dressed as Helena in the mirror—I had these red eyes and I was wearing a huge Twisted Sister wig—I knew immediately who she was. There’s something so ‘othered’ about her—so not part of conventional society. I needed to tap into what it’s like to feel that.”

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

27 Oct

TV Instagram mourns those lost on The Walking Dead (spoilers ahead), celebrates a birthday on Game of Thrones, gets excited about A+ guest stars and has a whole lot of style on and off set.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BL9t1jtAML-/?taken-by=laurencohan&hl=en

The biggest TV event this week was the season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead and even though I quit watching last year the first thing I checked after the episode aired was the identity of the departed. The Walking Dead is a show I generally keep up with just in case I ever want to go back and this is mostly through the Richonne tag on Tumblr.

My other favorite character is/was Glenn and this photo by Steven Yeun’s TV wife, Lauren Cohan is a heartbreaker. I am very excited to see what Yeun will be doing next.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BL_tnaPDrPf/?taken-by=steveyeun&hl=en

Steven Yeun paid tribute to the other Negan victim from the TWD season premiere in a very cool atmospheric shot of Michael Cudlitz.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend returned last week with a fantastic episode (and songs) and everything about this photo fills me with joy.

And in excellent Crazy Ex-Girlfriend casting news I offer you the above.

If I *had* to pick a favorite clone it would be Helena and I cannot wait to see more of her adventures in the woods with Donnie and Alison.

Paparazzi got some BIG photos this week while Game of Thrones was shooting (don’t click this link if you want to remain spoiler free – I have SO many costuming thoughts). This is not these photos and there is something very unnerving about Dora and SpongeBob hanging in Westeros.

Get ready for an onslaught of Halloween celeb photos after this weekend, but meanwhile enjoy the SNL ladies and this fabulous sketch. While I’m on the subject of this holiday; check out my piece on teen TV classics, costumes and growing up.

Everything about this is stunning.

I’m enjoying this season of The Last Man on Earth as much as I’m enjoying Will Forte’s drawn on eyebrows and Carol’s fabulous top. So that is a lot and it will be fun to see what the new location will bring.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BL-hU5NDfzp/?taken-by=abigailspencer&hl=en

Also high on the fun list is Timeless and it continues to capture the same feelings that early Sleepy Hollow gave me; the core cast is just as delightful.

‘Tis the season for baseball and shooting Christmas episodes.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine blast from the past.

I still need to watch the I Love Dick pilot on Amazon, but knowing Phoebe Robinson is going to be in it when the full season lands makes me even more eager to do so.

Abbi Jacobson and Jon Glaser serving up very different interpretations of talk show style with Glaser opting for something from Jon Glaser Loves Gear. In non-shocking news, I am very excited about Abbi’s new book.

Lupita not only stuns on the red carpet, but she also gifts us with a closer look at her Elle “Women in Hollywood” celebration ensemble.

Also from the Elle “Women in Hollywood” event is this perfectly understandable reaction to Lupita Nyong’o from Yara Shahidi.

Perfect fall style from Game of Thrones’ Carice van Houten.

Americans costume designer Katie Irish gives another sneak peek into her fabulous research materials.

The fact that this card was found by Elisabeth Moss makes it even better.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 1 Gag Reel

21 Oct

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend returns for season 2 tonight (or Sunday on Netflix if you’re in the UK) and to celebrate here is a very funny gag reel from the first year.

This includes Rachel Bloom pondering what words she can and can’t say on the CW, the usual mix of forgotten lines and some other hilarious mishaps.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

21 Oct

September might be the month where everything happens, but October is also delivering on the style front. From fancy events to magazine covers and promoting movies I want to see; this week’s “Out of the Box” is a whole lot of fun with a dash of photos that make me speechless.cynthia-erivoAt the God’s Love We Deliver Golden Hearts Awards (click here for more on this charity) there was a whole lot of Michael Kors on display (the charity is based in his SoHo building) and standout is Cynthia Erivo in a fantastic patterned number. Great lipstick and shoe choice for this look.cush-jumboCush Jumbo is a longtime Michael Kors aficionado and this is another hit striking a cute/sophisticated balance. I am also very excited for The Good Wife spinoff for costume and all the Diane/Lucca reasons. Plus Sarah Steele is coming back! sutton-fosterIt is hard to look at Sutton Foster’s ensemble at not sing “Gold” by Spandau Ballet and this is shiny delight. gugu-mbatha-rawOne final dress highlight from this year’s London Film Festival and Gugu Mbatha-Raw serves up major in the rain drama with her big umbrella, a beautiful plunging Burberry gown and a fantastic berry lip color.anna-campGood Girls Revolt lands on Amazon next Friday and like I don’t have enough shows to catch up on still (seriously, don’t go away at the end of September). For costuming, story and cast reasons I am looking forward to this and Anna Camp looks great in this very Giambattista Valli cute dress at the premiere. Excellent detail to warm my collar loving heart.jake-and-jonAt a Hillary Clinton fundraiser event in New York a whole lot of handsome took to the stage and when can we get a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jon Hamm? Now would be great. Please and thank you. Preferably a comedy, but that is not a dealbreaker.michelle-obamaThe first of three magazine covers that delivered on every level this week and this T Magazine dedication to Michelle Obama was pretty much 50% of what was on my Instagram feed on Monday. Every single time it popped up it still had the same impact and that is one of pure wonder. Such great simple and effective styling; those triangle earrings are making me wish I had pierced ears.

Michelle Obama also killed it at her final state dinner and I am so sad this is almost over.emma-stoneWhen this cover of Vogue first popped up on my Twitter TL on Friday afternoon my jaw hit the floor; this is the best cover Vogue has done in a long, long time (Teen Vogue you are still crushing it on the cover front). It manages to be a different approach for Emma Stone – love the pixie – while still managing to actually look like her. I am a sucker for all things stripes and I love this cover so much that I’m even fine with the whole cropped element. ruth-neggaThe November Vogue is also crushing it inside the magazine with a series of stunning photos of Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton promoting their new movie Loving. Negga’s direct stare is disarming in the best possible way and the styling of this shoot is excellent.
thr-ruth-neggaAlso giving great face and style as part of The Hollywood Reporter cover story this week. And if this dress looks familiar it is because the pussy bow version was worn by Keri Russell on The Today Show a few months ago.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

19 Oct

Jane the Virgin returned this week much to my teary eyed joy and this cast continues to deliver on the social media behind the scenes front. Plus we have a week of super stylish moments including Insta postcards from Cannes, costume secrets and more.

Kicking off again with Gil and George because I really want to see Oh, Hello again and because the guest stars keep on coming. Care Delevingne (just know I’m doing the Reese voice) is essentially wearing lounge wear including boob slippers, which actually feels entirely appropriate for this show.

The cast that watches their season premiere together, stays together.

From the Jane the Virgin season 3 premiere and what the cast looks like all aged up. Just let it be known that this was the part of the episode where I went from welling up, to single tear and quickly followed by double eye sobbing. This show.

While I am strongly Team Michael this is very flame emoji and I cannot wait for whatever fantasy sequence will deliver this costuming delight.

Adorable husband alert.

It is going to be a while until Game of Thrones comes back so this will have to do for now.

Abigail Spencer has a whole lot of Timeless behind the scenes photos on her Insta including this incredible look at the costume detail from the Lincoln episode.

Also this is delightful and giving every lipstick yes.

Carol’s got all the best clothes on The Last Man on Earth.

There’s a new Crazy Ex-Girlfriend theme and while I’m definitely going to miss singing along to “she’s so broken inside” I really love the aesthetic and vibe of this new one.

More Mad Men costume flashbacks from January Jones and the time Jones was pregnant meaning Betty had to put on weight.

Regular readers will know that I have major Stephanie Beatriz glasses envy and this collection really is everything. Saving this picture for when I get a new prescription.

Now entering the amazing outfits portion of the week and first up Ruth Negga in a very cute Rochas skirt and short sleeved sweater. Lipstick points too.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLt6RVAg-up/?taken-by=yarashahidi&hl=en

Yara Shahidi continues to deliver with her style choices and her makeup here also looks incredible.

Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby have been in Cannes for a television industry event and it was hard to narrow down my picture choice to just two as they have been crushing it.

I am so happy it is fall for knitwear reasons and this is very chic example. When in France.

Sarah Silverman making photo collages of Michael Sheen is relationship goals.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Oct

This is the last part of the regular column catch up train (see also “Behind the Insta-Scenes“) and so this is a sort of “Look of the Last Three Weeks.”

In this post-Emmys time – I have been writing about Emmys fashion for so long it feels odd now we’re past it – there are still plenty of fancy pants events, premieres, film festivals and magazine covers.
matthew-rhys-and-keri-russell-operaKeri Russell and Matthew Rhys attended the Met Opera in style a couple of weeks ago with Russell opting for Stephane Rolland for the third time in recent months (see also the Emmys and the White House state dinner).

This caped jumpsuit might be my favorite of the three and it brings all the elegant drama. It is also fun watching the reduction of Matthew Rhys’ hiatus beard from the White House through to the Emmys and then this. After all they have started shooting season 5 now.

It was a tossup between this appearance and the fantastic lady suit/pussy bow blouse combination Keri Russell wore to another recent event, but the cape won out this time.emily-blunt-and-john-krasinskiKeeping with the couple faves and a lipstick/dress color delight from Emily Blunt in Prada at the New York premiere for The Girl on the Train last week. Also this live reading of Good Will Hunting pretty much sounds like the best thing ever.sjp-and-cynthia-nixonAs regular readers will know, I am a big fan of former co-stars who come out to support each other with their new projects so Cynthia Nixon at the Divorce premiere is a big tick in this box. Plus the Miranda/Carrie friendship always hit me in the feelings department (“My Motherboard, My Self” is my favorite SATC episode) so this appearance gets a double tick. There is so much joy in this photo and I also think they both look great.

Oh and one episode into Divorce (which I really liked) and I am already obsessed with SJP’s coat collection – so thankful this show is set during winter – and her bedspread.yara-shahidi-and-michelle-obamaThis week has been a shitty one politically, but I am so thankful for Michelle Obama for this speech and for taking part in events like Glamour’s “A Brighter Future: A Global Conversation on Girls’ Education.” Here she is with Black-ish star Yara Shahidi and both are crushing it on the pattern front. High fives for all.naomie-harrisNow for the London Film Festival and at the Moonlight premiere Naomie Harris wears a beautiful Valentino in the rare category of “sheer that I like.” Pairing it with a colorful pair of pumps really sets the look off. lupita-nyongo-elleElle’s annual “Women in Hollywood” issue is here and Lupita Nyong’o scores another fantastic cover shot while also discussing the importance of seeing people who look like you on screen and in magazines:

“I grew up with a very limited mirror of myself. I watched a lot of TV, but the people on it were always light skinned. And now I have a platform that takes me into people’s houses and onto the pages of their magazines.”variety-laverne-cox“Power of Women” is Variety’s annual celebration of women in Hollywood who are making a difference with their philanthropic work. One of those women is Laverne Cox and she is being honored for “changing the narrative around LGBTQ communities.”

Cox has been on many magazine covers (this is her second for Variety) with visibility being an important factor and Cox explains that “So many people have been inspired to live their truth as trans people, and so many people have begun to think differently about who transgender people are.”

This is another stunning image and the color of the dress and the way this shot is lit gives off a feeling of hope.jon-hammWinter is coming and that means all the knitwear and coat editorials; Mr Porter scores an early win with Jon Hamm serving up so much charisma in this week’s profile and accompanying photoshoot. The whole piece is good, but this passage/description of Hamm really stood out to me:

“Even in his baseball cap, at 45, Mr Hamm is as comely as you’d expect from a man whose first credit was “Gorgeous Guy at Bar” in an episode of Ally McBeal. One women’s magazine described him as “astronaut handsome”, not that astronauts are selected on looks, duh, but it does capture his capable, reassuring, 1950s air and captain-like quality. His voice really does insinuate that everything’s going to be OK, but there’s something soulful about him, something indefinable that makes you hope he’s going to be OK, too.”

It is part of the reason why a Don Draper pitch worked so well; the voice and face combined. Also there are photos of him hiding in the sweaters if you really need another reason to click.
