Best of the 2017 Golden Globes: Ladysuits, Best Besties, Capes and Color

Welcome to the TV Ate My Wardrobe coverage of the Golden Globes red carpet; there will be three posts covering the best looks of the night in which a whole lot of my favorite trends took center stage.

Let’s get to it!Regular (and probably not so regular) readers will know how much I love a ladysuit and when ladysuit queen Evan Rachel Wood hit the red carpet in custom Altuzarra my jaw dropped. Wood is serving up so much Marlene Dietrich perfection and this is what she said about the tux choice:

“I’ve been to the Globes six times. I’ve worn a dress every time. And I love dresses, I’m not trying to protest dress. But I want to make sure that young girls and women know they aren’t a requirement and that you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. To just be yourself because your worth is more than that.”Also going for a ladysuit is Kathryn Hahn and if I could just put a flames emoji here then I would because this is smoking hot. From one of my favorite red carpet trends to another and Mandy Moore’s going full caped and plunging drama in Naeem Khan.This post could pretty much be an updated rendition of “My Favorite Things” and Viola Davis once again crushed both the dress and speech (twice!) game.Going classic crimson siren in Rodarte and last year’s Best Actress winner Brie Larson also has the red lipstick of my dreams.Now for something different and Caitriona Balfe once again shows that she looks stunning in every kind of frock including this difficult to pull off navy and orange Delpozo.Award season when Michelle Williams is nominated gives us a window into TV Ate My Wardrobe’s fave IRL besties and the Golden Globes/Busy Philipps’ Instagram did not disappoint.

Dress wise and I am so here for everything about Busy’s Stella McCartney florals. Less so with Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton and I would get rid of the ribbon choker (the one major ’90s fashion trend that needs to go away) and cut off the sleeves.Oh, hello.

Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal’s friendship is one for the ages and for the swoons.Stranger Things kids keep on with their dressing better than a lot of their adult counterparts aka the Jacob Tremblay award.

They haven’t shared the Game of Thrones screen since season 1, but Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner thankfully have all this red carpet time together so we can see just how important they are. Including adjusting Maisie’s amazing yellow Ong Oaj Pairam frock and hiding most of Sophie’s sheer nightmare.

Best of the Pre-Golden Globes: The AFI Awards and BAFTA Tea Party

Before the main event and all the fancy gowns tonight there are the pre-Golden Globes parties and other awards. Plenty of pattern, color and interesting looks from a lot of the nominees you will be seeing walk the red carpet later.It took me a moment to realize this is Claire Foy because I’ve got used to her Elizabeth hair and styling on The Crown in which she looks a good five years older than she does here. The weight of the crown and all that.

Love this pattern clashing with a hint of polka dot at the AFI Awards and I have a feeling she will be picking up the Golden Globe tonight. Which I will be more than happy with even if my heart lies with Keri Russell.Another fun mix of texture and print with Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer in this fun floral number. And expect a major hair changes in Stranger Things season 2 as they get on the wig train. Naomie Harris falls into the Magical Fashion Unicorn territory (see also her outfit from the BAFTA event below) and a yellow double breasted sleeveless coat dress might be a hard look to pull off. But Harris does just that and this Phillip Lim Spring 2017 works like a charm paired with black pants. Looking forward to seeing Harris on the red carpet tonight.Donald Glover has the patterned shirt paired with a suit/no tie casual cool thing down and I can even get on board the no socks things with him.Once again going super suave look is Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali and the red polka dot pocket square is an excellent accessory choice.Thanks Jarett Wieselman for pointing out that Entertainment Tonight’s Instagram referred to this AFI Awards look as “No one rocks the dapper werewolf in a turtleneck aesthetic quite like Chris Pine.” There’s nothing more to add to this A+ observation and also can someone make this movie? Please and thank you. I am a big fan of the suits that aren’t black/brown/navy/grey and Riz Ahmed is a dream in burgundy.Moving on to the BAFTA LA Tea Party and it comes as no shock that I am madly in love with Emma Stone in this very ’70s looking DVF polka dot halter dress. The long brown suede Brock Collection resort coat Stone wore on top is only adding to these very strong feelings.More floral pattern delights from one of the women crushing award season and Ruth Negga’s The Vampire’s Wife frock is another winner. Excellent shoe and lipstick color too that is somehow matchy matchy without giving me a headache.More Magical Fashion Unicorn from Naomie Harris in a dress that could threaten to be overpowering. This is an exceptional Thom Browne embroidered number showing there are many ways to do botanicals. Also bonus points for the non-boring/non-beige Christian Louboutin pumps.Maisie Williams wears a very cute gingham frock by Holly Fulton and she continues to light up any red carpet.Also in the very cute category is Millie Bobby Brown and she continues to walk the sophisticated and age appropriate line; this time in a simple Kate Spade New York with a bow on the back.More Louis Vuitton for Michelle Williams and this pink shift dress is part of the cute section for a reason. It could boarder on too saccharine, but these fantastic gold shoes offset the sweetness. Caitriona Balfe can wear extravagant gowns from any period and also kill it in the simplest black Ferragamo number. Another one to watch tonight.More on the black dress front and Amy Adams looks classic in Dolce and Gabbana. LadySuit Watch 2017 gets off to a great start with the effortlessly cool Isabelle Huppert in red.Oh, hello. All the Diego Luna swoons.

More burgundy delights and Tom Hiddleston is not one to shy away from a suit with a punch; this time super stylist Ilaria Urbinati has put him in double breasted Gucci.

Best of the 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet

On the awards show rankings the Critics’ Choice Awards are mid-table at best, but they definitely deliver on the red carpet front and they happen to come nice and early in the cycle. Plus the combination of TV and film means this is a rather long round-up featuring ladysuits, so many florals, dudes in colorful/playful suits and some daring patterns.

Oh and the Golden Globe nominations will be announced later today!Evan Rachel Wood has given us A+ cowgirl chic this year and she’s also high up on the #LadySuitWatch2016 rankings as she has delivered all year. Rounding 2016 out with this classic black belted Altuzarra stunner and I am full heart eyes for this.Janelle Monáe goes big in a fantastic Nicci Hou gown that is giving me Alice in Wonderland adjacent vibes. Great lipstick choice too.Love, love, love Portia Doubleday serving up glitzy futuristic seventies vibes in this long sleeve Jenny Packham number. Quickly followed by a gown that totally complements it and I would love to see Doubleday standing next to Allison Williams decked out in Balmain Resort; perhaps in a Studio 54 inspired shoot. Hitting the floral portion of the red carpet and this is also a good time to say how much I love Edge of Seventeen and Hailee Steinfeld’s performance. This is a really fabulous Jason Wu gown and Steinfeld gets double bonus points because pockets and red lipstick.A playful twist on the botanic theme and there is so much about this Delpozo frock that shouldn’t work including the jagged hemline, but it looks fantastic on Gillian Jacobs.Constance Wu demonstrates another fun structured take on flowers in Johanna Ortiz Resort and the splash of red on both the gown and with her lipstick really makes this pop.This is Us star Chrissy Metz also delivers strong on this very on trend pattern with a spin that feels winter appropriate. A striking mix of pink and red for Cynthia Nixon that stands out from all the blue on this red (okay it is actually blue) carpet.Viola Davis looks super sophisticated in a sparkly Michael Kors column dress and she never disappoints. Glad she has such a strong awards presence this year for both TV and movies.Now this is a power couple I want to see on screen with two very fun takes on the whole white dress thing that goes beyond bridal with Sarah Paulson in embellished Vera Wang and Amanda Peet in black and white. Both ladies also go bold with their lip color, much to my delight. Maura Tierney gives casual cool ladysuit vibes in Styland and this pairing is giving me so many E.R. related feelings. Everything looks so much happier IRL for this pair; Shiri Appleby in a sparkly Monique Lhuillier and Constance Zimmer’s sleek John Paul Ataker dress perfectly complement each other.The Stranger Things kids double down on their style domination and replace Jacob Tremblay as the kid to watch on this red carpet this year. And Rami Malek continues his forever streak (hat tip to Ilaria Urbinati) of wearing interesting ensembles on the red carpet; this time in velvet green Burberry and Louboutin shoes.James Marsden goes big in Salvatore Ferragamo and over the years he has shown how fond he is of grey plaid; we are very much here for this choice and the level of appreciation he is getting this year.Leaving on this because feelings and Sterling K. Brown is another dude who delivers on the non-black suit thing.

Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps Friendship Appreciation Post (Part 2)

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about IRL besties Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps with an appreciation post which has been years in the making. This award season is really delivering on coverage of this friendship and Michelle Williams continues to bring the best date to events like these.

The 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards followed this pattern and because Busy Philipps is such a prolific Instagrammer this means we also get some A+ behind the scenes action including their preferred paired shot (see below) and an Insta story, which will sadly soon disappear. The latter includes the toilet shot, sushi and Michelle Williams re-piercing Philipps’ ear post awards.

They both look great here in two very different takes of the big floral trend of the evening with Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton (of course) and Busy Philipps in a striking red Martha Medeiros gown.

Best of the Hollywood Reporter “Women in Entertainment” Celebration

The Hollywood Reporter celebrated their annual “Women in Entertainment” issue with a breakfast event and this means a whole range of daytime styles from ladysuits to patterned dress delights. This year Tina Fey, Ryan Murphy and Megyn Kelly were all honored with Jon Hamm delivering on the funny in his opening speech for Fey.

You can watch the entire thing and it is well worth it.

Plus here are the best looks from the event and there is so much pattern pretty.

Kicking off with a ladysuit in a fantastic color and multi-Olympic gold winning medalist Simone Biles crushes it in Marienbad.More ladysuit goodness from Vera Farmiga and polka dot pussy bow is probably my favorite kind of pussy bow blouse. Joined by younger sister Tassia (for Ryan Murphy celebrating reasons) and she also looks fantastic in one of the many patterned numbers I am now coveting hard.Getting all the amazing collar points is Michelle Monaghan in this superb Michael Kors Spring 17 ensemble. Daytime event perfection.More florals and another winner with Eva Longoria wearing a dress from her own Limited collection; it is totally affordable and very cute. Plus bonus pockets!From roses to leopard print and Niecy Nash is full super sexy whoa in this all powerful Meow and Barks Boutique dress.Dipping into that seventies inspiration is Maria Menounos in a fabulous Valentino mini frock. While I’m not crazy for shoulder cutouts, I do love the print and color of this Ellery dress on Issa Rae.And while I’m going crazy for yellow dresses (as I tend to) Emma Stone is smart to remind people of the great La La Land poster during award season and she does so in Giambattista Valli style.Constance Zimmer mixes casual with glam in a Pat Benatar tee from Janey Lopaty Vintage and super sparkly Milly skirt.It is not all print and ladysuits; Aja Naomi King looks bold in blue and this Alice + Olivia dress is a great breakfast choice. I’d like to see some hot pink pumps, but I can deal with this neutral tone for an event this early in the day.Now it might look like Genevieve Angelson put on this Chloe ensemble back to front, but I love it so much and she is definitely pulling it off. Plus I really hope another network/streaming platform saves Good Girls Revolt because the story on that show is far from over.To the woman of the hour and really if you haven’t watched the video at the start of this piece then I will urge you to scroll up and do so. Also she looks great in patterned Dolce & Gabbana with a very day appropriate blazer thrown over for good measure.And I’ve got to end on this one for reasons. Oh to have Jon Hamm look at you like that.

Best of the ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ Red Carpet

Last Monday evening I sat in a hotel room and watched the last ever episode of Gilmore Girls, well the last episode until now and the 4-part special Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life special series lands on Netflix this Friday.

While season 7 was definitely flawed – I think I maybe disliked season 6 more – the finale did a fine job of wrapping things up and I definitely ugly cried (a lot of this was to do with Richard Sherman). However, the absence of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s creative voice is noticeable and so thankfully Gilmore Girls is getting another shot.

Here are the best of the red carpet photos/outfits from the premiere that was held in LA on Friday with a bonus new trailer at the end.Group shot! Featuring all your faves – it took me a moment to realize who was standing next to Alexis Bledel and it is Finn – and it might be a total coincidence but everyone seems to have got the same “wear something in the black outfit family” memo. Gilmore ladies make me so happy and I also forget sometimes that they are not actually related. This is a great example of how to co-ordinate without matching and show off individual style. Lauren Graham once again goes classic LBD as she did in Berlin; Alexis Bledel has switched out pleated silver Dion Lee for gold detail Cynthia Rowley and Kelly Bishop is giving off great textured metallic teal. It might be the Cary from Good Wife factor or because of the Matt Czuchry charm, but if I had to pick one of Rory’s not so great love interests it would definitely be Logan. Not that Rory (or even we) should have to choose because Team Rory and not trash boyfriends all the way.

BUT Matt Czuchry does scrub up extremely well and I instantly want to rewatch The Good Wife after seeing him in this suit.I’m not sure how Michel would feel about sneakers on the red carpet, I think he could justify it if he saw it on a blog or fashion magazine and Yanic Truesdale is selling the smart/casual vibe well.

Keiko Agena got the black attire memo and gives it a shot of bold color and pattern in a Clover Canyon frock. Love her Miu Miu pumps too.Ah, Christopher. This is where we enter the Gilmore Girls characters that were also Luke/Lorelai obstacles section of this red carpet and urgh the end of season 6/the whole marriage plot. Anyway, David Sutcliffe looks great and the silver in his beard is working like a charm. Just no more Lorelai and Christopher. Carrying on with this theme and while it is definitely not Vanessa Marano’s fault, the whole April storyline is kinda the worst. Marano is pulling a full Alicia Florrick here in a zipped jacket and she is joined by her actress sister Laura Marano in a very cute red dress.

Lauren Graham’s other TV daughter, Mae Whitman wears a green ladysuit with a fabulous “I’m With Lorelai” Rachel Antonoff T-shirt. And don’t worry as there will be an “I’m With Rory” version available soon. Can I petition for an “I’m With Emily” tee? Please and thank you.

Best of the 2016 Emmys: Shimmer, Black and White

Continuing our Emmy style rundown and this second bumper post gives great sparkle. Plus the many different interpretations of how to wear black and white on the red carpet.Getting 70s disco vibes from Constance Wu in J. Mendel and after Sarah Paulson’s Prada, this is my favorite look of the night.Judith fucking Light. Always amazing. No exceptions. Orange is the New Black was pretty much shutout this year, but Laverne Cox is giving statuette realness is Naeem Khan.Claire Danes might want to tone down the tan/bronzer, but her Schiaparelli super sparkly number is a stunner.Taraji P. Henson changed it all up for presenting and I think I like this look even more than the yellow dress. Sequins and that hairstyle continue the nod to the 70s.The Stranger Things kids are adorable and need to be protected at all costs. Also continuing the trend of dressing better than a lot of adults, particularly in the tux department (see also Jacob Tremblay). Millie Bobby Brown put a bird on it in Red Valentino and this is the perfect brand for her.A very romantic looking Zuhair Murad floral gown for Kristen Bell and this is giving me all the heart eyes.Another knockout choice from Yara Shahidi and a Clara Rotescu dress that also gave great twirl/floating style.Everything about Tracee Ellis in this pose and Ralph Lauren dress is incredibly regal. The Americans sadly didn’t win, but Holly Taylor combines great sparkle with white in custom Theia Couture. Rami Malek in a white Dior tux jacket is showing why he was on our most anticipated list.Rami’s not the only one crushing the white tux jacket look and Tituss Burgess also came with a strong shoe and bow tie game.A sheer frock I don’t hate! Sophie Turner delivers a miracle in Valentino.And even more sheer that I like! Julia Louis-Dreyfus gave a heart crushing speech as her dad passed away on Friday, which left me pretty much sobbing into my wine.Sequins really were the big style winner of the night and America Ferrera’s Jenny Packham frock is another evening high point.Kerry Washington is never boring on the red carpet and she’s wearing a show stopping Brandon Maxwell number coupled with hair that takes me back to Olivia Pope hanging out on a tropical beach.

Best of the 2016 Emmys Red Carpet: Bold Color and Couples

Game of Thrones and American Crime Story dominated the actual Emmy awards and there were also plenty of surprise winners. Of course a few grumbles were had and while I was rooting hard for The Americans I can’t be sad when Tatiana Maslany and Rami Malek won in the main acting categories.

This was also a really strong red carpet year and the first of today’s bumper posts showcases the array of bold color frocks and adorable couples.Sarah Paulson in my actual favorite look of the night in an incredible plunging Prada gown that made me full gasp when I first saw her and while girlfriend Holland Taylor was absent (she is currently rehearsing The Front Page on Broadway), she made sure to give plenty of shout-outs on both the red carpet and when she won.

Tatiana Maslany has been crushing it all weekend and this was no exception; Alexander Wang is favoring red (see also Priyanka Chopra) and this is one trend that worked on a numerous occasions last night. Tom Cullen is also serving up great beard and tux.Going Old Hollywood glam is Portia Doubleday in Armani Prive and a season in stunning neutrals on Mr. Robot means this is a very welcome colorful sight.Kate McKinnon’s reaction to winning was an early contender for best surprise face and this is another fabulous lady in red moment. Perfect lip color too.For best twirling; Priyanka Chopra in Jason Wu.Yellow also dominated and Taraji P. Henson crushed it in Vera Wang with the best clutch accessory: a custom made Edie Parker.Forever favorite couple Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett are forever looking incredible on the red carpet/in life. A different take on the yellow trend and Ellie Kemper’s Jenny Packham frock has pattern and sparkles; two things that will always draw my eye.Amanda Peet gifs from Togetherness were super helpful in getting across how I felt about some of the awards last night and I’m so glad I get to show off her Altuzarra dress too. Another sequin and yellow treat.Diane von Furstenberg is best known for the iconic wrap dress, but she also makes killer red carpet attire including this super bold Shiri Appleby number.A newly blunted bob gives Constance Zimmer’s look a fun edge against this very pretty Monique Lhuillier gown.Matching the bow tie to Viola Davis’ Marchesa is a nice touch and a fabulous look from the couple.This color is stunning on Tina Fey as does the shape of this Oscar de la Renta; a red carpet best?After dominating at the BAFTA LA Tea Party, there was sadly a lack of great pattern at the Emmys this year. However Jane Krakowski delivered and I am also very much feeling her colorful shoes.I don’t love Keri Russell’s Stephane Rolland dress, but I do love this shot with Matthew Rhys and her Giuseppe Zanotti heels are also amazing.

Best of the Pre-Emmy Parties

The pre-Emmy events really kicked off last night at the Variety and Women in Film’s celebration and we have some of the best looks of the night. Expect more to be added before the main event tomorrow. Lots of super sparkly detail on nominee Tatiana Maslany’s frock and strappy sandals satisfying my inner magpie and boyfriend Tom Cullen crushes both the beard and suit game.That time of year for actresses from Downton Abbey to grace these pages and this is their final Emmys; Laura Carmichael gives great print dress which kinda looks like it has a dolphin on it, but I suspect that is actually a rock by a river image. Regardless it is rather serene and different from the usual patterned affairs.A jumpsuit with pockets and a jacket giving a caped effect is always going to please me. All Michelle Dockery needs is a bold red lip to really set this Elie Saab ensemble off.Looking radiant in white Yusef Sanchez and Laverne Cox has gone for classic simplicity with just the right amount of sparkly accessories to complete this party outfit.Showing off her naughty side with a clutch that also reads nice in a super chic look and Constance Zimmer is also wearing with the best lipstick of the night.Sarah Hyland’s leaning a little figure skater in Elisabetta Franchi, but the combination of sparkles, feathers and sheer works as a party frock.Double breasted suit perfection for Donald Glover and the no tie thing is working like a smart/casual charm.

Best of the 2016 TCA Awards Style

The 2016 TCA Awards (not to be confused with the Teen Choice Awards) took place on Saturday and it is one awards show where the attendees know they have won* and that aren’t televised. They also don’t separate the acting awards by gender and ladies won big this year with Sarah Paulson and Rachel Bloom taking home the drama and comedy accolades. American Crime Story was the big winner of the night and The Americans received Best Drama for the second year in a row. For a full list of winners head here.

Sidenote – I also can’t help but think of this episode of The Comeback when it comes to award shows where the recipient knows they have won.

Check out our style highlights from the event below.The Mr Robot cast continue their best dressed domination with Christian Slater and Rami Malek crushing their suit choices (as per usual). Malek’s penchant for color instantly makes him standout. Portia Doubleday and Carly Chaikin’s excellent dress picks continue with pleats and a super sexy black number; they are high on the Emmy red carpet anticipation list. Oh hey there Cuba Gooding Jr. More royal blue pleats from a Mr Robot cast member and this time with one of my other favorite things; sequins. Stephanie Corneliussen also happened to be a TCA panel style highlight last week.There’s a lot of sheer/net curtain elements to this dress and much like this Philosophy frock Sarah Paulson wore a few months ago I am somewhat on the fence; however she wears it incredibly well and the shorter hairstyle continues to be the best. Also got some strong #RelationshipGoals going on as Paulson poses with girlfriend Holland Taylor.It was a busy week for Americans stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys and they didn’t make the awards (it looks like Matthew Rhys was shooting Girls), but the rest of the cast looked amazing with Holly Taylor in a sparkly Marc Bouwer frock. Bonus lipstick points.Whoa! Keidrich Sellati who plays Henry Jennings sure looks tall/scrubs up well and is finally out from behind the computer screen. Pockets and florals, plus gold shoes equals a fantastic look from Alison Wright. I love how genuinely thrilled Rachel Bloom looks at events like this and the red/white coordinating with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna is striking. All the feelings and a good way to start the week with a hug from Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
