Out of the Box: Look of the Week

13 Jun

There has been a whole host of events this week as the summer months are filled by conversations about the season of TV we have just experienced, along with various charity and fashion soirees taking place. This week’s “Out of the Box” is showcasing the best of these including the Fox “Girls Night Out” panel, the Women in Film 2014 Crystal + Lucy Awards and the amfAR Inspiration Gala.

Mindy KalingMindy Kaling’s looking a little trippy in Marc by Marc Jacobs at Fox’s “Girls Night Out.” I could see Megan Draper wearing this especially as it’s long sleeved and showing a whole lot of leg; the pattern is rather hypnotic and is on point with the late 60s psychedelic style.

chelsea perettiChelsea Peretti is a TV Ate My Wardrobe sweater queen on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and at the Fox “Girls Night Out” she is pulling off two trends we’re not always on board with; tulip dresses and open toe booties.

Laverne Cox amfarThe Orange is the New Black season 2 watch is preceding nicely (about to watch episode 8) and one thing it needs more of is Sophia. Lucky for us Laverne Cox has been hitting up various events (and the cover of Time) such as the amfAR Inspiration Gala in this stunning midnight blue gown.

Kerry WashingtonPicking up an accolade for excellence in television at the Women in Film 2014 Crystal + Lucy Awards is a good reason to return to the red carpet and Kerry Washington does just this in a very cool paint splatter effect Sportmax skirt and black top. Orange is what ties the look together without going too matchy matchy with lip color and AMAZING Louboutin ‘Geo’ studded toecap pumps.

Rose ByrneThe ‘Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future’ is an honor that has been bestowed on Rose Byrne and Max Mara threw a cocktail party with W Magazine to celebrate. Byrne is of course in Max Mara and the sequins combined with a plunging neckline help her stand out. I love the choice of silver capped pumps and her minimal makeup (even though I’d love to see either a deep red or bright pink lip color, but that might just be me).

Kiernan ShipkaAlso attending this Max Mara event is Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka and she continues to kill it on the red carpet. Wearing Max Mara Shipka goes for something edgier with a leather skirt on the bottom and contrasts this with a white silk top. The yellow Christian Louboutin bag adds a pop of color and she once again nails the age appropriateness of her sartorial choices. Jon Hamm recently spoke about Shipka during this LA Times roundtable discussion just how lucky they were to get someone as talented as Shipka from such a young age.

gillian jacobsDoing the super summer frock thing at the Monte Carlo Television Festival is Gillian Jacobs and she is doing it well in this red strapless number. This is a super cute look and I can’t wait to see Jacobs on the next season of Girls and everything else possible.

30 May

Switching things up this week for “Out of the Box” with a Mad Men mid-season finale special. My favorite look from this episode is what Peggy wore for her triumphant Burger Chef pitch and you can see that here. Janie Bryant continues to deliver a range of exceptional costumes that stay true to a particular character’s evolution and here are my other standouts from “Waterloo.” These include some ensembles that I’d like to have in my own closet and not just for a 1960s fancy dress party.

Mad Men 7.07 Peggy mint greenStarting with Peggy and I adore this mint green crew neck dress. The horizontal pattern is vibrant without ever edging into anything ‘typically’ 1969 and Peggy’s never going to go down the psychedelic route. Peggy’s worn some great things in the office this season and this is a dress that wouldn’t look out of place in 2014.

Mad Men 7.07 MeredithMeredith’s two piece is far less contemporary and her attempts at comforting Don are hilariously off the mark. The zigzag trim is very distracting, but the daisy pin can stay.

Mad Men 7.07 MeganIt’s the mint green phone which has played such a pivotal role in this long distance relationship and this is now coming to an end. Megan as always looks like no other character on this show and all season she has been embracing LA style distancing herself further from her life with Don. She’s relaxing in a super cool blue and orange bikini with a floral bathrobe that reads way more casual than her previous pink one – I guess bathrobes can fall into fancy and non-fancy categories.* I love that their relationship ends not with fireworks, but with a sad and accepting realization that this is dunzo. They’ve been done for a long time really and this season has been about going through the motions. This could in all likelihood be the last time we see Megan and yet as a fan of her character there’s part of me that hopes there will be an organic reason for an appearance during the final seven episodes.

*Update! It’s not a bathrobe, but a bathing suit cover up over the turquoise blue bikini with orange vinyl trim that Janie Bryant designed for Megan. Thanks to Janie Bryant for clarifying this on Twitter and solving my robe quandary.

Mad Men 7.07 Betty and SallyMoving onto summer suburban fashion back on the East Coast and Betty is as polished as she ever was. Sally’s plaid shirt and khaki shorts rejects her mother’s feminine style and it’s another example of plaid persevering through the ages; turn those shorts into denim and cut them a little higher – no underbutt please – and you’ve got a perfect summer look for now.

Mad Men 7.07 Sally as BettySally can’t escape her mother that easily and while Betty would never wear something like this as it’s far too modern, Sally’s hair and especially her smoking pose have an eerily similar quality to the person she has been sassing all season. The purple ensemble is cute and flirty without straying too far into ‘sexy sexy’ territory and all I want from this show is a happy ending for Sally. OK, add Peggy and Joan to that list.

Mad Men 7.07 PeteBack to the office and Pete’s tie perfectly matches the coffee cup that will always remind me of Bob Benson. Pete, you can’t escape the memory of Bob that easily.

Mad Men 7.07 Mad JoanThe red of Joan’s dress matches the anger on her face. It’s a great dress and I think I finally understood why Joan has been so mad at Don all season as her priorities as a single mother are different to the other partners. Plus when you factor in what she had to do to get a seat at the table her rage is explainable, I just wish they had done a better job with laying this out.

Mad Men 7.07 Ted and JimThis is more for the giant light bulb lamp in the background and Roger’s office is an interior design delight. Look at those curtains!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 May

So many red carpets this week including the several Upfronts events we have already looked at (here and here) and “Out of the Box” is covering the best of everything else. We’ve got dudes looking dapper in suits and some super cute dresses now the weather is finally of the sunshine variety.

Matt BomerThe Normal Heart is on the anticipated list and Matt Bomer is a power clashing delight at the premiere, wearing checks, polka dots and floral. This Tom Ford suit is exquisite and so is the dude wearing it.

Samira WileyThis is a fun, flirty dress on Orange is the New Black’s (which is back in under a month!) Samira Wiley and the dotty trim at the bottom make it way more than just a run of the mill navy frock.

Claire Danes and Hugh DancyHere celebrating Born Free Africa Mother’s Day Family Carnival is Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy, with Danes wearing a Marni maxi dress that is part of the exclusive Born Free range (available on ShopBop). It’s a beautiful design and it looks perfect for the warmer weather that is coming, plus it has pockets (always a bonus) and the proceeds go to an excellent cause. Dancy’s pale blue Oxford shirt and dark blue pants is the perfect complement to pinks on Danes’ dress and I’m digging his brown shoes.

Benedict CumberbatchAn event at Windsor Castle hosted by Prince William is time to bring out the big guns and once again Benedict Cumberbatch is showing just how it is done; repeating the success of this Met Gala attire this time opting for a suit rather than grandiose tails.

Rashida JonesRashida Jones is making up for the Met Gala by wearing this beautiful Tanya Taylor ensemble. The skirt has a 50s kick to it and paired with a silk ivory tee it manages to look retro without feeling costumey. The side pony tail and pink lip add a fun and simple edge; this is a really great outfit and could go toe-to-toe with some of the other floral and spring inspired looks from the Upfronts this week.

Rachel BilsonRachel Bilson looks adorable in a Mary Katrantzou floral print shift dress at the CW Upfront. The green and pink design is striking and pairing it with white Bionda Castana heels doesn’t detract, nor does it get the same blah effect a nude pair of shoes would give. The Hart of Dixie star is as delightful on the red carpet as ever.

OITNBLast night was the premiere for season 2 of Orange is the New Black and the red carpet stylings are as wildly different as the characters these women play. Taylor Schilling’s skull covered – which I first thought were Stormtroopers – Monique Lhuillier dress is a striking and bold look. Both Uzo Aduba and Danielle Brooks have gone for a different take on the full skirt/crop top trend and I love both interpretations. Aduba has gone for chic simplicity and Brooks has opted for deep purple/fuchsia, with Aduba adding a colorful pop with her lipstick choice. All three women are wearing metallic heels (once again three very different types) and they look amazing.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 May

As there’s been a lot of red carpet goings on this week starting with the WHCD followed by the Met Gala (parts one and two) “Out of the Box” is going for a selection box approach of looks that have caught our eye this week. This includes magazine covers, premieres and one of the many romantic moments from The Mindy Project season finale.

Aubrey PlazaAubrey Plaza attends the LA Palo Alto premiere in a striking Peter Pilotto dress. It’s an edgy take on a spring floral frock and the mix of prints on this silk-blend dress creates a strong visual using bold color and pattern. While it might look a bit like a Magic Eye picture – sadly my eyes weren’t magic as I could never see the boat or whatever it was – it manages to avoid looking like a hypnotic mess. Love the combination of purple, blue and white.

Yvonne StrahovskiAnother bold and colorful choice with Yvonne Strahovski in Emanuel Ungaro at the UK premiere for 24: Live Another Day. This color block creation looks like a fancy bathrobe (in this case not a bad thing) and the contrasting blue panels make quite the impression. It’s been a good week for Strahovski as she also appeared on the new season of Louie and I still need to catch both that and 24. Let the end of season/new shows pile up begin.

NY Mag TV IssueRegular readers will know how much I love TV editions of magazines and this year’s New York magazine cover star is in one TV event that I am highly anticipating – The Normal Heart on HBO – and the most watched sitcom on TV right now. Jim Parsons isn’t who I was necessarily expecting to see on the cover (last year was Michael Douglas, Jessica Paré in 2012) and while I’m not a Big Bang Theory fan, I do really like this cover image. It’s an incredibly bright color combination and as with the Jessica Paré covered issue, yellow is an important part of the design concept. If it came out in January this might be too much sunshine styling to handle, but it’s May and I’m all for color explosion like this.

http://instagram.com/p/npM7E8JQ-_/

The Mindy Project aired its excellent season 2 finale this week and one of the visual highlights was the Danny and Mindy New York tour that paid homage to the Nora Ephron movies that both Mindy Kaling and Mindy Lahiri hold close to their heart. Mindy Kaling’s Instagram account is a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes photos from The Mindy Project including this beautiful sunset shot. It also shows how important it was on this occasion to use real New York rather than a backlot in LA, where it would be impossible to capture a moment like this.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

2 May

Out of the Box is focusing on the costume design pieces that caught our eye this week. We’ve already talked about the striking looks on Mad Men, festival style from the Parks and Recreation season finale, Alicia Florrick’s wine cardigan and Elizabeth Jennings’ shoulder pads on The Americans, so here is a quick roundup of everything else that has been on our mind. We’re also offering a look at a couple of costumes we can’t wait to see on Hannibal tonight.

Alison Orphan BlackOn Orphan Black only Alison would go to a funeral dressed as Holly Golightly and then drink herself into oblivion, because well she kinda did have a hand in Aynsley’s death, well that and Aynsley’s scarf. There is no explanation for this Breakfast at Tiffany’s homage and all that’s missing is a cigarette holder. Alison is the clone I find the most enthralling as she tries to balance her quest for suburban perfection while spiraling thanks to the crazy her clone status brings. She’s so wonderfully uptight and her lack of filter is why she is best when she is around Felix. This is also the part where I really forget it is Tatiana Maslany playing everyone.

Orphan Black FelixFelix looks like he’s stepped out of a movie and from the same decade as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, this one tinged with Andy Warhol and experimentalism. It’s also worth noting that both Alison and Felix are wearing versions of the costuming they have on in the season two poster they share (with Donnie) which suggests the Felix/Alison story is not over. Now I know Felix and Sarah are brother and sister, but it’s the Felix and Alison pairing that brings me the most joy as they neck tiny bottles of vodka together. So, while he has abandoned her for now, as Alison falls deeper into a pit of despair hopefully she can count on her friends to come through for her. With an outfit like this Felix would totally fit in with Margot Verger (see the Hannibal entry below).

New Girl If you had to describe an outfit Jess would wear on New Girl it would probably look a lot like this one from “Dance” – Peter Pan collar and a-line skirt (polka dots optional) – and I love it. I am partial to twee and my feelings about polka dots are blasted on the top of this and every TV Ate My Wardrobe page; the skirt is French Connection (another favorite) and the ‘Porla’ Peter Pan collar plum sweater is currently more than half off at Alice + Olivia.

Mason and Margot Hannibal 2.10So here’s a little of what we can expect styling wise from Mason Verger on tonight’s episode of Hannibal and I pretty much screamed in joy at the sight of this extravagant coat and the sneer of contempt across his face is perfect. Those look like mink lapels and Mason’s cruelty extends to the animals he wears. This is probably the most conservative of all of Margot’s costumes so far – I’m currently working on a much longer Margot piece – and the high neck coupled with the buttoned up jacket suggests how unsafe she feels around her brother; we already know she wants to kill him so this doesn’t come as a surprise. The horse shoe accessory, braid and general styling suggest she’s been riding and even though Margot claims she is worth nothing, her attire since we have met her indicates otherwise. There is a flamboyance to the Verger’s and their costuming is theatrical in its opulence.

Hannibal Margot 2.10In contrast to the first shot of Margot from “Naka-choko” this is a much more relaxed posture as she reclines in Hannibal’s office. The gold flecked blazer is in line with her previous visits to Hannibal with puffed up sleeves, but it’s a lot more provocative than her previous dramatic attire. What has made her suddenly so comfortable around Hannibal? Is it her chat with Will last week? Whatever it is, I can definitely state that this eye-catching jacket is on the covet list.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

25 Apr

After the foray into Hannibal last week, we return to the red carpet this week with the Tribeca Film Festival and some frocks that have caught our attention.

Maggie Grace and Aubrey PlazaAubrey Plaza and Maggie Grace are both pulling off simple and elegant looks at the About Alex premiere with Plaza in scarlet Valentino and Maggie Grace in crisp white Kaufmanfranco. Details like the bow on Plaza’s dress and the flash of canary yellow with both Grace’s pumps and belt set off both looks. Luckily Grace’s heels distract from the nude heel let down on Plaza.

Mindy KalingMindy Kaling ditches her usual colorful palette for a super chic black Helmut Lang ensemble while supporting co-star Chris Messina directorial endeavor Alex of Venice (yes I’ve picked the two movie premieres with Alex in the title). While I don’t want to see Kaling ditching her bold red carpet choices, she looks really great in this non-signature style.

America Ferrera and Judith LightAn Ugly Betty reunion at the premiere of America Ferrera’s X/Y with Judith Light posing with her former co-star. We love Judith Light here at TV Ate My Wardrobe (this includes Broad City’s version) and her floral coat is everything. Especially when paired with black pants and turtleneck. Judith Light you can do no wrong. Ferrera looks wonderful in a Roland Mouret navy and white halter dress and the orange Rodo clutch adds a splash of bright color that ties this all together.

Gillian Jacobs Life PartnersGillian Jacobs poses for a portrait studio session at the Tribeca Film Festival for her new film “Life Partners” and this falls into my striped clothes obsession. It has a hint of the Tanya Taylor outfit we featured a few weeks ago on Jessica Williams and the contrasting vermilion color with gold piping produces a knockout look for Jacobs.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

18 Apr

Switching up “Out of the Box” this week and moving away from the red carpet and magazine editorials with a Hannibal special using last Friday’s episode “Yakimono” to discuss some of the various looks this season and how costuming has been utilized to show a shift in character temperament. The repetition of a wide shot showing two characters sitting opposite each other is something of a Hannibal signature and this is presented in this episode with a slight shift that stops short of being a callback to the season 1 finale. Plus someone has had a makeover (sadly no montage).

Hannibal 2.07There’s been a variation of this set up throughout Hannibal whether it is in a therapy session or as prisoner/friend. Hannibal has even sat opposite the empty chair revealing just how much he has been missing the friend he framed for murder. Even Hannibal, no matter how twisted the reasons for any of his deplorable actions has the capacity to miss someone. The chair is filled once again as Will is free and he wants to resume his sessions, the very sessions that were used to manipulate his brain that was already on fire (like a messed up Katniss). The framing of these scenes suggests some kind of equilibrium, which of course in the past was a lie as Will was very much at Hannibal’s mercy. The balance has shifted and while Hannibal is still in control, he’s now facing a previously unknown entity; a Will Graham with all of his facilities working and a desire to hook to Hannibal for good. The game has been upped and this simple, yet effective shot signals this new stage in the Hannibal vs. Will battle.

Hannibal 2.07 Alana and ChiltonWhen Alana sat opposite Will in the season 1 finale in a room very similar to this one we saw them facing each other in a wide shot. Not so in this case with Alana and Chilton and this shows just how alienated Chilton is at this point. Alana is not here to be his confidant, though I suspect her personal involvement in the case makes her presence a tad messy. My fear for Alana, now she has slept with Hannibal is that for the rest of the season she will act primarily as a “Hannibal is innocent” mouthpiece and this character deserves more than the role of blind faith advocate. Costume wise this is the most unlike Chilton we have seen as he wears the orange of prison and Alana is very much in her signature wrap dress attire. Chilton gets shot in the face, but Bryan Fuller has hinted this doesn’t necessarily mean death for this character.

Hannibal 2.07 Chilton at homeSo how did Chilton end up going from pristine and flamboyant plaid to jumpsuit orange? Let me show you how and first of all I want to mention just how audacious Chilton’s costuming has been this season as it mimics the plaid of Hannibal. Chilton wanted to be like Hannibal and now he is, well in the crimes he is accused of. This shot also gives a good look at Chilton’s spacious home which is bathed in light as opposed to the dark decor of Hannibal’s home.

Hannibal 2.07 Chilton and HannibalThe moment of realization as Chilton lies at the feet of a plastic kill suit wearing Hannibal as he shows the perfect “Oh fuck” face, he can’t even bask in the glory of being right. At this point Chilton’s suit is still looking rather dapper even as he lies on the floor…

Hannibal 2.07 Bloody ChiltonCut to all the blood and there’s no way he’s getting those stains out.

Hannibal 2.07 ChiltonNow this is the most Chilton has looked like Will as it’s a more subdued approach, Hannibal sure picked out a suave on the run outfit in the bags he helpfully packed. The red and black pea coat does lose cool points as Chilton scrabbles around in the snow covered wood. Hat tip to Raúl Esparza for the amazing and hilarious performance he has given this season, even in Chilton’s darkest moment he still got the funniest line of the episode “Abel Gideon was half eaten in my guest room, I have corpses on my property. You just threw up an ear.”

Hannibal 2.07 Hannibal plastic kill suitYou know who always looks good? Yep, Hannibal once again shows how to make a plastic kill suit (which has to be bespoke) stand out, that’s right wear your regular suit (plus pocket square) underneath. No muss, no fuss.

Hannibal 2.07 Will unwashedNow we come to the before and after as Will shows off his post prison “I don’t really give a shit how I look” look. Bedraggled hair, untidy beard and the plaid of before, plus a nifty vest which could almost double for his fishing attire. To catch a fish the second time it means scrubbing up so please welcome the new, slightly less hairy Will Graham.

Hannibal 2.07 Will close upWill’s wearing a lighter, single color shirt as if he is free from the constraints he has been in both mentally and physically; there’s a renewed confidence we haven’t really seen before and this makes him an unknown entity to both Hannibal and us. Having a haircut and trimming his beard show that he isn’t going to slink away into the darkness and the power balance has shifted to an even playing field. One thing that is notably missing are Will’s glasses and this is something I chatted about with Noel Kirkpatrick on Twitter and he pointed out the lack of glasses makes sense as Will previously used them to mask his face, now he wants to “seduce” Hannibal so the glasses are no longer required.

Will GrahamThe new more polished Will Graham look continues with tonight’s episode “Su-zakana” with this rather fancy looking wool coat and scarf combination. It’s like a halfway point between Jack and Hannibal; I really want to see what he has on under the coat (unintentionally pervy turn of phrase).

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

11 Apr

It’s that time of month for the newsstands to get an influx of new magazines and this edition of Out of the Box is looking at striking images from New York magazine, Vanity Fair, the annual Beautiful People issue of Paper and the The Normal Heart cast covering The Hollywood Reporter.

Cabaret[Source]

Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming are appearing on stage together in Cabaret and New York magazine is celebrating this collaboration with an amazing photo of the pair in this week’s issue. It’s a departure from how we are used to seeing Cumming as relatively buttoned up Eli Gold on The Good Wife – though Cumming has won a Tony for his previous Cabaret turn – and it’s Williams’ Broadway debut. It’s a super cool photo and there’s extra excitement for me personally as I have tickets for Cabaret this summer, if you’re a regular reader you will know how much I adore the work and styling of Michelle Williams.

Jessica Williams[Source]

The Beautiful People issue of Paper has many TV Ate My Wardrobe favorites so it was hard to pick out just one, in the end Jessica Williams is our choice because she’s rocking the Tanya Taylor stripes and for her always awesome appearances on The Daily Show. Williams also appeared on the most recent season of Girls and along with coveting all her outfits; it was good to see her flexing her acting chops on a show like this.

Kiernan Shipka VF[Source]

Mad Men returns this weekend for part one of the final season and Kiernan Shipka continues to kill it on both the red carpet and in fashion editorials. This Tommy Hilfiger ensemble is classic all American with a color block twist and I adore the hair flick that nods to the decade prior to the one Sally Draper currently lives in. I want all the good things for Shipka and that she can navigate the tricky path which is growing up on camera. So far she is doing a stellar job and I’m also glad to see editorials like this Vanity Fair one choosing age appropriate clothes for her to wear.

THR the normal heart[Source]

The Normal Heart is on the highly anticipated list and this week Jim Parsons, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo cover The Hollywood Reporter and look unsurprisingly dapper. If you haven’t seen the trailer you can watch it here and be warned the room you are in might suddenly get dusty.

TK

Bonus Taylor Kitsch from the issue and he is wearing the hell out of those Salvatore Ferragamo pants and Dior shirt. For more photos head here.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

4 Apr

PaleyFest is over and we’re keeping a focus on red carpet events with this edition of Out of the Box as a How I Met Your Mother star balances the series finale week with the release of Captain America: The Winter SoldierMad Men has its seventh season premiere and Rashida Jones celebrates a new writing venture.

Cobie Smulders Captain AmericaCobie Smulders looks like she knows how pissed off you are about the How I Met Your Mother finale at the Captain America premiere and putting aside all those feelings momentarily – I’m a very casual viewer and I’m annoyed by that ending – to bask in this fantastic red carpet look. The navy blue asymmetrical Sportmax gown throws in peplum and plunge detail that together look super elegant. Almost bonus points for the fantastic clutch and earrings, losing those points as she could do with another accessory or two. Smulders nails the role of Maria Hill once again and this Captain America sequel lets the female characters be good at their jobs, in appropriate non cleavy costuming and they don’t fall down the ‘damsel in distress’ incredibly lazy trope. All of these things made me very happy indeed, more of this please Marvel.

Mad Men castAs with the four women of Mad Men featured last week – this time Jon Hamm and January Jones enter the mix – there are many different style choices on display and I kinda love all of them. Kiernan Shipka continues to be on point and age appropriate in a metallic floral long sleeved, but super funky Nina Ricci frock. Also working the metallic angle is Christina Hendricks in a Wes Gordon silver skirt, paired to perfection with a simple but elegant black blouse.

The current and former Mrs Draper, Jessica Paré and January Jones are working the fashion forward angle; Paré rocking Antonio Berardi which for some reason made me think of the kind of gown Johanna in Catching Fire would have preferred to symbolize a tree. Jones is in Roksanda Ilincic and the bold gold belting detail brings it all together, not so sure about the side braid for this event. It’s a softer look for Jones who has a habit of going severe on the red carpet; maybe she’s less intense when it’s a Mad Men event rather than an awards show.

Elisabeth Moss has opted for an Alexander McQueen skirt with a super high daring thigh slit and while she looks pretty rock and roll, swapping the dramatically dark eyes for red lip color would really set this look alight. Jon Hamm’s blue suit makes a change from the influx of grey that has been dominating red carpets recently, but the women are the ones who stand out. This cast is still one of the best dressed and I can’t wait for all the costuming treats this year as we head into polyester and clashing patterns territory.

Rashida JonesRashida Jones is at event celebrating her new column for Glamour magazine (she is one busy lady) and this Adeam dress perfectly straddles the party/professional line. The shell pattern adds whimsy to the look and the silver heels help make this outfit pop, as does the dash of pink lipstick.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

28 Mar

It’s week two of Paleyfest and this has delivered more fantastic outfits from the stars of shows like Mad MenMasters of SexAgents of SHIELDThe Mindy Project, Community and Veep. Here are the ones that stood out.

The Paley Center For Media's PaleyFest 2014 Honoring "Mad Men"The women of Mad Men work a variety of styles both on and off the show; however they don’t look like they are attending different events which can sometimes be an issue at these panels. Kiernan Shipka is once again showing that being a teenager doesn’t take away any fashion credibility and her Dolce & Gabbana floral dress is once again age appropriate and on point. Christina Hendricks does a nice job of honoring L’Wren Scott in an amazing green dress by the designer that flatters and accentuates those famous curves.

Jessica Paré is the most high fashion of the group (the absent January Jones also vies for this spot) and this Roksanda Ilincic frock looks pretty standard from this angle. What this shot is missing out is how extreme the half-wrap orange fold is and this is a dress that looks amazing in a lot of photos and a mess in others. Paré pulls it off even if I’m not in love with her shoes. Elisabeth Moss is showing off her fun side, which we have been seeing on the red carpet and in the recent New York magazine profile in a black mini Emilio Pucci number. The white lace panel and bow detail adds a hint of vintage and combining bold red lips and shoes adds that extra something to the outfit.

Chloe BennetI really shouldn’t like this Mason by Michelle Mason jumpsuit that Agent of SHIELD’s Chloe Bennet is wearing as I’ve made my feelings on jumpsuit’s clear last week and black tends to be the only kind of jumpsuit that I could even consider. For some reason I think this looks really great and I’m just going to go with it. The slightly different blue pumps make sure it’s not too matchy matchy and I am forever a sucker for pockets.

Annaleigh AshfordNow this is more my usual speed (pockets again) and Annaleigh Ashford from Masters of Sex looks incredibly charming in this Novis dress. I was worried the red pumps might be a step too far, but the more I look at them, the more they work. The variety of textures, pattern and color make this a frock to covet and I’m excited that Ashford’s Betty is returning for season 2.

Mindy Kaling and Chris MessinaThe Mindy Project is back next week after they left us on a kissing cliffhanger in January and here is a sneak peek of how adorable Chris Messina and Mindy Kaling look together. Kaling is wearing a beautiful emerald green jacquard Topshop high-waisted skirt and crop top; she explains in this month’s Vogue that “It’s really tempting to not take chances. But I don’t want to be fearful.” This sentiment sums up Kaling’s outfit decisions well and I love how she embraces fashion in this way even if it doesn’t always work. On this occasion it definitely does and this is great color on her.

Gillian JacobsAs Britta Perry, Gillian Jacobs doesn’t get to wear a whole array of party frocks – don’t get me wrong I love her endless supply of striped sweaters, plaid shirts and jeans – so at the Community panel it is good to see her bring it in House of Holland. The coral and navy starburst disco dress is a bold, fun choice.

Julia Louis Dreyfus PaleyFestVeep returns in a couple of weeks and it’s yet another show I need to catch up on (Game of Thrones is giving me so much side eye right about now). Julia Louis-Dreyfus looks super sophisticated in this charcoal grey getup; the black pattern and belting are both flattering and stops it from becoming just a dress for the office.
