New Girl 4.13 “Coming Out” Review: Field Trip

14 Jan

On New Girl this season Jess’ work and personal life are entwined as a result of her relationship with Ryan, but since they started dating in secret we haven’t seen their attempts at covering this up at school. Now they don’t need to because Coach did his research and found a previous case allowing them to confess all to their peers. Sneaking around romance stories are a sitcom staple but as this show has had at least two of them it makes more sense to get straight to the reactions to their relationship. Plus as we have seen in the past the teachers at Jess’ school aren’t the most stable so of course they react with suspicion and chaos follows.

Jess just wants people to like her and this is one of those lesson episodes where characters realize that doing the right thing isn’t always the easiest or most popular. And you might end up with a face full of wasps.

New Girl 4.13 Coach and JessElsewhere Schmidt has a medical issue which is stopping him from going into work (an ulcer caused by work) and despite Schmidt’s very vocal protests Nick is going to show him how to do nothing for a day. Schmidt is desperate to become Don Draper, but he’s destined for mid-level if his boss has anything to do with it and this is far from the character his office is trying to emulate. The only person who doesn’t really have a work story going on this week is Winston as he spends the episode talking up the crystal he has been given by his colleagues (in a way this is a work story I guess) in a creepy but all-knowing way.

Coach reacts to no longer being the hot new guy in the teacher’s lounge by convincing Jess and Ryan to reveal their relationship. When this doesn’t have the desired effect he attempts a Ryan like sensitive nature and cardigan styling, which instead gives off a whole murderer vibe. What “Coming Out” reinforces with all the characters is that it is better to be yourself and Coach gets his hot status back when he leaps to save the kids from the nest full of wasps which has been unleashed. It’s painful, but he seems into it.

The same goes for Jess and while she is still concerned about people liking her because this is her standard position, Cece points out – this episode needs more Cece – she has to go in and be herself while owning it at the same time. And own it she does while also telling Ryan that she loves him in front of all the other teachers. And that goes well too as he responds in the same way. So far the whole Ryan relationship has been relatively drama free and as I mentioned last week I am glad he has become more than just a three-episode thing. Now the “I love you” moment has occurred I’d like to see more of Ryan beyond dreamy perfection, not that I need angst but there is only so far that dreamy perfection can take you. Even with a butt like that.

Schmidt has always wanted big things so to be told he is nothing more than an amazing mid-level employee is the push he needs to look beyond his current job. After a day of mooching in a Nick fashion he points out that Nick used to have grand ideas (cue college flashback) and now he just spends his days doing nothing. On one end you have Schmidt working too hard in a job that isn’t going anywhere and Nick is at the other standing still (or lying down). Put the opposing positions next to each and what you end up with is a desire to work together. This has disaster written all over it, but maybe it might produce something amazing like computers for babies. Back in season 1 they came up with Real-Apps and while this ended up cutting Jess’ boyfriend Russell there is also potential here.

Taking the leap, doing what you’re scared of and breaking out of a routine are all addressed in “Coming Out” and Winston’s crystal might be nonsense, but it also helps some of these characters confront personal roadblocks. Also all-knowing and wise Winston is hilarious. And it leads to one of the funniest tags this show has ever delivered. Much like Schmidt’s job prospects this is a mid-level episode; however it has the potential for more especially if it goes into business with Nick Miller.

New Girl Style Watch

New Girl 4.13Jess wears two very cute dresses this week with this ‘Jenny’ houndstooth dress from Shoshanna and later an umbrella print ModCloth frock. The blazer in the photo above is the same one Jess wore from J. Crew in last week’s episode. Also from J. Crew is the quilted red jacket in the picture at the top of this review. All are on my wish list.

Divided Attention on The Good Wife

13 Jan

For the first few episodes of The Good Wife this season Eli spent most of his energy convincing Alicia she would be the ideal State’s Attorney candidate. A few things pushed Alicia into this campaign with Castro provoking her and Gloria Steinem’s words of encouragement hitting the ego sweet spot. Now we are fully into the campaign and Alicia shared the stage with opponent Frank Prady to debate the issues and sell themselves to the voters. Alicia took her time to get there but “The Debate” goes all in with how much Alicia wants to win. She really wants it and she will challenge you if you question why.

The Good WifeUp to this point there has been very little to suggest Alicia’s partners are unhappy with her absence and the main focus has been on Cary’s trial. Now Cary has been exonerated it is back to business as usual for the firm, but Alicia is still running for State’s Attorney. The Good Wife is generally very good at handling an array of storylines with ripped from the headlines moments weaving into the overall narrative; however on this occasion the writers appear to have attempted too much. There’s the debate followed by the free flowing kitchen version, which addressed the position of privilege of the two candidates but still fell short. Peter is meanwhile dealing with a Ferguson like incident (a disclaimer at the start tells us this episode was written/filmed prior to the real life grand jury decisions in both the Ferguson and Staten Island cases) while also finally zipping up his pants. This latter gesture still does not endear him to me and it makes me feel uneasy seeing Peter as some kind of hero in all of this when the politics are the concern.

There are a lot of huh moments this week and some of this stems from the Neil Gross divorce settlement, which I thought had already been sorted. Apparently not and through a series of events he ends up having to pay his ex-wife $60 million more than he wanted. So he fires his lawyers. This is where the absence of Alicia comes into play and this is not the first time Eli has insisted she doesn’t take calls. Alicia tends to ignore Eli on this one but her focus is divided and this is why incidents such as the Cary slip last week occur. It is also why big decisions get made while she is out of contact. In the same way Alicia went over Cary’s head to get Diane on board, so now are Cary and Diane doing the same to Alicia.

Cary and Diane have at times had a contentious relationship, however it is also important to remember how close the pair has been in the past and this bond will no doubt have grown as they have recently been working in close tandem. It is only natural for Alicia to feel out in the cold and this is emphasized in the final scene of the episode. The argument itself comes out of nowhere and it would have felt more organic if Diane and Cary had aired any negative feeling about the SA race prior to this moment. Also Alicia coming at Diane with the ‘If I were a man you would never ask me that’ comeback feels like a weird way to tackle the “Why are you still running?” question. In this moment I am very much with Diane when she argues that this is “about two people trying to run a law firm. It has nothing to do with sexism.” It is an ugly scene because the past few weeks have been about the three of them sharing hugs and tears while fighting for Cary’s freedom and just like that it is gone.

The head tilt of ‘well why?’ from Cary causes Alicia to turn and leave, but she’s been debating all day and this arguing frame of mind causes her to go back for more. While this “how dare you” rage works when being questioned about Peter’s inability to keep it in his pants and of course she’s going to be pissed off that they’ve hired David Lee without consulting her, Alicia also has to understand that she has to pick a lane and the firm is not her priority at the moment.

We go into the hiatus with a distracted and isolated Alicia as she’s not really listening to anything Johnny is saying and instead her focus is on the two people in the office opposite her as they work on things she has no involvement in. Ending on such a moment of disharmony in an episode that comes across as so disjointed gives me unsettled feelings; as this is The Good Wife and they love to throw curve balls it is hard to picture exactly what the working environment will look like when the show returns.

Best of the Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet: Black Frocks, Crop Tops, Tuxes and Everything Else

12 Jan

Rounding out the TV Ate My Wardrobe 2015 Golden Globe coverage with a smorgasbord of style highs with some daring approaches and a whole array of classic looks. Plus a couple of family portraits.

Lorde GGNo I did not think a crop top would pop up on this list, but thanks to Lorde in an incredible Narciso Rodriguez ensemble this is a thing that has happened. I want this jacket in my life.

Claire DanesThis might be down to Danes style blindness but I love this Valentino frock (which Claire Danes referred to as a work of art on E!), well aside from the sheer panel. Ace earrings too.

Jessica ChastainWhile Jessica Chastain’s Atelier Versace gown is giving me all the Amy Adams American Hustle feelings and thereby it isn’t setting the world on fire, Chastain still looks super sexy and incredible.

Gina Rodriguez GGGina Rodriguez follows in the Golden Globe first season award winning group for sometimes teen show affairs – which includes Claire Danes, Keri Russell and Jennifer Garner – and she played it safe in black Badgley Mischka. She looks flawless and I can even see beyond the fringed sheer skirt. As I lamented yesterday I still need to watch Jane the Virgin and her speech was one of the many misty eye inducing moments.

Allison TolmanAllison Tolman opted for a similar shape gown to the one she wore at the Emmys and why not when it looks this good. Great accessory choices and overall styling.

Eddie Redmanye GGEddie Redmayne did not disappoint with his choice of Gucci tuxedo and there’s not a lot of guys who could work the velvet look this well. Love the olive color and cut of Hannah Bagshawe’s frock. Yes the lean is happening.

Jake and MaggieHappy sibling time and the Gyllenhaal’s are a delight. Jake gets beard points and while I think Maggie’s dress would be better in a bolder color (I thought blue whereas Whitney McIntosh suggested green) the Miu Miu frock is still lovely. Maggie Gyllenhaal winning for The Honourable Woman was another excellent speech moment:

“I’ve noticed a lot of people talking about the wealth of roles for powerful women in television lately, and when I look around the room at the women who are in here and I think about the performances that I’ve watched this year, what I see actually are women who are sometimes powerful and sometimes not. Sometimes sexy, sometimes not. Sometimes honorable, sometimes not. And what I think is new is the wealth of roles for actual women in television and in film.”

BoyhoodA celebratory portrait of the Boyhood family and I am all over Lorelei Linklater’s pink dip dyed hair and this is another sheer moment that in a surprise twist is working for me.

Tina and Amy tux heartGoing to end with two of the ladies of the night and the biggest swoon moment came from Tina Fey’s lady tux of amazing. This is hosting attire perfection. Another beautiful blue gown for Amy Poehler.

While it is still up on YouTube here is their searing, hilarious and incredible opening monologue:

Best of the Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet: The Color Wheel

12 Jan

Red isn’t the only color that was on trend at the Golden Globes and a variety of strong hues made a dramatic impact.

Naomi WattsYellow is a color I am constantly drawn to and while it is going to be hard to top my ultimate red carpet moment Naomi Watts in Gucci is a contender for best dressed last night. Bold red lip and the snake necklace add to the impact of this look.

Julia Goldani TellesAs Samantha Powell pointed out on Twitter last night there was a serious lack of heavyweights wearing Oscar de la Renta, however The Affair’s Julia Goldani Telles is stunning in this striking blue Oscar de la Renta ball gown. More bonus lipstick points getting dished out.

Felicity JonesNow this is the kind of gown a nominee should be wearing and Felicity Jones is a standout in Dior Couture. The teal color and especially the cut with the high neckline is giving me so many good feelings. A lot of the Theory of Everything love has been directed towards Eddie Redmayne (who won last night), but it is Jones who I am in awe of.

LupitaSo this isn’t a full red carpet shot of the Giambattista Valli gown that would probably be a bit much on someone who doesn’t have the style queen prowess of Lupita Nyong’o – the bodice detail is incredible but could overwhelm – but I really wanted to include a shot of her wearing glasses. Also this is what I assume is Colin Farrell’s True Detective look.

Leslie MannAnother stunning yellow with Leslie Mann in Kaufmanfranco and I love the contrast with the bold Ferragamo green clutch. Also this red lipstick.

Amy Poehler and Natasha LyonneA pair of blue beauties and Amy Poehler’s Stella McCartney pocketed ensemble is another dress which is giving me 70s vibe. Natasha Lyonne is also working this bold shade of blue in Reem Acra.

Best of the Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet: Lady in Red

12 Jan

Continuing the Golden Globes all the pretty dresses rundown and moving on from shimmer with a look at one of the big color trends of the night; red on the red carpet.

Viola Davis GGRed lipstick and gown excellence from Viola Davis wearing Donna Karan Atelier with a touch of embellishments to add some glitz to an already stunning frock.

Taylor SchillingFor pure red no fuss Ralph Lauren is who you turn to (see Jennifer Lawrence at the 2011 Oscars) and Taylor Schilling is working this frock.

Christine BaranskiFor a darker shade here is Christine Baranski killing it in Zac Posen. Always in awe of Baranski.

Julianna MarguliesThe length of Julianna Margulies’ Ulyana Sergeenko Couture gown is super awkward and this is one that looks better before you scroll down, but there are still certain aspects that work for me.

Jane Fonda and Lily TomlinAnother best pairing of the night and if I had any choice the hosts of next year’s Golden Globes. All the prayer hands emojis for Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Allison Williams GGThis look is both very Allison Williams and not at the same time as the makeup is a little on the severe side for her and yet the Armani Privé gown is a striking combination of old Hollywood glamour and the princessy vibe she leans towards.

Bonus Viola Davis and Allison Janney in red reacting to the arrival of Prince to the stage.

Best of the Golden Globes 2015 Red Carpet: Sparkle Motion

12 Jan

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s coverage of the 2015 Golden Globes red carpet and we’re going to be splitting this up into four posts covering all the major trends of the night. This was a really strong year for a variety of styles and not only that but the awards themselves were at times incredibly touching with many misty eye inducing speeches. Good work everyone.

First up the super sparkly gowns.

Diane KrugerKicking off with the best dressed couple of the night and Diane Kruger’s super shimmery Emilia Wickstead dress is eye catching and the same can be said for Joshua Jackson in a tux. Kruger also had the best reaction to The Affair winning best show as January Jones can attest.

julianne mooreJulianne Moore serving up feathered and sequin perfection in Givenchy Couture. There was cheering at this red carpet moment.

Uzo AdubaAnother big style win for Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba in a column of silver Randi Rahm goodness.

Maura tierneyTaking a brief break from all over silver with Maura Tierney in a chain mail style wine color frock and this is one of several looks from the night with a 70s inspired edge.

Emma stoneAnd now for something completely different and Emma Stone gets added to my “huh, jumpsuits can be pretty fantastic list” with this stunner from Lanvin. The bow that turns into a train should be too much but it works.

Dakota JohnsonMore metallic decadence and former Ben and Kate star Dakota Johnson dazzles in Chanel Couture.

ellie kemperEllie Kemper is a beaded beauty in this exquisite Naeem Khan dress. Bonus red lipstick points are awarded.

Stay tuned for more Golden Globe red carpet reactions.

Best of the Pre-Golden Globes Parties

11 Jan

Happy Golden Globes Day! It isn’t just about the dresses (and suits) on display from the awards show as there has been a lot of pre-gaming at various events over the past few days. Here are some of our favorite looks including a whole lot of pattern from W Magazine’s Golden Globes celebration and the 2015 BAFTA LA Tea Party.

Diane Kruger MarniDiane Kruger is serving up 1960s perfection in a lilac Marni frock at the party and the leopard-print A.L.C. ‘Davenport’ clutch is the perfect addition to an already fantastic outfit.

Amy Landecker Jay DuplassJay Duplass is wearing a shirt that is stylistically in tune with his character on Transparent in this fun shot with co-star Amy Landecker at W’s Golden Globe celebration.

Tracee Ellis RossThere is something a little upholstery about Tracee Ellis Ross’ dress but this is floral perfection nonetheless. Bonus red lipstick points awarded.

Gina RodriguezMoving on to the BAFTA Tea Party and starting with Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez in a very cute and fun Guishem dress. I’m looking forward to seeing what Rodriguez will wear on the red carpet later and I will also continue to lament the fact I have still yet to watch Jane the Virgin.

Joanne FroggattYes this is a playsuit and while I have my own play/jumpsuit concerns, over the past few months I have warmed to them on others and Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt in Emilia Wickstead is another I find myself liking a whole bunch. The flash of pastel color with the clutch detracts from the slightly blah nude strappy sandals.

Moran AtiasThis is a very delightful look from Tyrant’s Moran Atias with butterflies and plaid from Temperley London at the BAFTA Tea Party.

Gillian AndersonThis reads a little more beach and cocktails than tea party mostly because I think it needs a necklace; however Gillian Anderson is still resplendent in this ensemble.

Jamie DornanAnderson’s The Fall co-star Jamie Dornan shows how to do the suit without a shirt and tie thing with aplomb. The pocket square is a nice touch and while I’m all for beardy goodness this is entering the too grizzly stages.

Eddie RedmanyeEddie Redmayne’s suit game is consistently strong (as consistent as his pose leaning which I can’t unsee since Tom and Lorenzo mentioned it) and his Alexander McQueen electric-blue suit at the BAFTA event is no different. He is definitely my most anticipated dude for his evening.

Kit Harington BAFTAAnd finally wearing something that sits in the middle of Redmayne’s suit and Dornan’s jacket/no shirt and tie is Kit Harington looking far more casual than his Testament of Youth premiere attire from last week.

Come back tomorrow for a whole lot more dress (and suit) analysis.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

9 Jan

It is the first new “Out of the Box” of 2015 and after two weeks of near winter hibernation everyone is coming out to play for premieres, magazine covers, award shows and the TCA winter press tour.

Broad City S2 premiere Amy RyanBroad City returns in less than a week (Wednesday 14!) and after attending the Girls premiere a couple of days ago, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer took center stage at the Broad City premiere party. If I was ever to attempt a form of crop top then Abbi’s outfit is my platonic ideal of this with the sliveriest of stomach skin on show. Amy Ryan is one of many guest stars we can expect to see in season 3 and this is one super happy photo of awesome people.

Broad City premiereSpeaking of awesome people and because I couldn’t chose between these two photos from the premiere here are Abbi and Ilana (her white jacket is aces) doing the group party pose with SNL’s Kate McKinnon and the always amazing Carrie Brownstein (also wearing a coat to be coveted). Drawing hearts around this.

Viola DavisAt the People’s Choice Awards (which I know no one really cares about but hey there were a handful of great outfits) Viola Davis looks stunning in an Escada column of hot-pink. Plus when she won there was a good amount of shade throwing at the awful New York Times piece that was somehow intended as a compliment towards Davis. In her speech Davis said “Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty.”

Melissa McCarthyEverything about Melissa McCarthy’s outfit is a win and the leather piping gives a chic and stylish edge stopping it from being just another all black ensemble. Bonus red lipstick points.

Allison JanneyAllison Janney co-hosted these awards so there were a variety of outfits and it is this sparkly Rani Zakhem number from the red carpet is the standout. Smoking hot.

Kit HaringtonIt is going to be a weekend of a lot of dudes in suits and Kit Harington shows how it is done (even with a simple suit the tailoring can be off) at the premiere of Testament of Youth. Skinny tie perfection.

Tina Fey and Ellie KemperSwitching things up and TCA winter press tour delivered on the floral attire from Tina Fey and Ellie Kemper as they discuss their new Netflix (and previously NBC) project The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. All 13-episodes will debut March 6 and I am already obsessing over Kimmy’s super colorful wardrobe from the promo pictures.

Lena Dunham ElleLena Dunham covers the Women in TV issue of Elle and while it doesn’t quite hit the polka dot highs of her Vogue cover from this time last year, the cover shot is still a striking. Bed hair win.

Allison WilliamsAnother Girls star magazine cover and the styling of this Glamour shot is still very Allison Williams without going down the preppy or princess route. The Bottega Veneta dress and relaxed sitting/slightly hunched posing is really working for me.

8 Jan

The Costume Designers Guild 17th Award nominations have been announced and we are now fully into award season. The awards will take place Tuesday, February  17 and celebrate excellence in costume design across a variety of television, film and commercial categories. The division of categories means it isn’t just period costume that is given a place to shine (as it tends to be with the Oscars or BAFTAs) and some of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s most talked about and revered shows are on the list below.

Cersei Game of Thrones

Dos Equis ‘Most Interesting Man in the World Walks on Fire’ – Julie Vogel
Kia Soul Hamster Commercial Featuring ‘Animals’ – Anette Cseri
Smirnoff ‘The Mixologist’ – Laura Jean Shannon

The fantasy/period television category leaps out at me because every single one is outstanding when it comes to costume design (among other things) and the intricate detail that is delivered by these costume designers helps transport the viewer to worlds that have existed in the past or previously on the page. The main disappointment here for me is the absence of The Americans as Jenny Gering creates various personas for Elizabeth and Philip to adopt in their spy disguises while grounding them in their regular American family attire all without screaming “It’s the 80s!”

In terms of the contemporary TV offerings it is Lyn Paolo’s work on Scandal that has not only impacted the way we think about how powerful women dress, but there has even been an affordable clothing line featured on the show and available at The Limited so the audience can have a little bit of Olivia Pope’s style in their life. For this very reason I am disappointed to see Daniel Lawson’s work on The Good Wife missing from the nominees as Alicia Florrick’s work wear is just as striking and Lawson also has his own line (which albeit is not quite as affordable, more splurge levels of purchase).

Salvador Perez’s is the costume designer on a show which features another successful career woman, but Mindy Lahiri’s style is nothing like Olivia Pope or Alicia Florrick; however The Mindy Project is no less deserving and this is another huge omission for me. The same goes for the incredible costumes on The Honourable Woman and Ed Gibbon would be one of my choices for the TV movie/mini-series category. And there is no show that does serial killer tailoring quite like Hannibal; three piece suits and plastic bespoke kill suits shouldn’t go this well together but Christopher Hargadon has done just that. Plus he also does the lady power dressing well from Alana’s bold patterns, Freddie’s court attire to Bedelia’s silk blouses.

Congratulations to Jenny Eagan for the double nomination for True Detective and Olive Kitteridge. If only I could wear Zoe Kazan’s giant frames from the latter and pull them off.

Movie wise I don’t have too much to grumble about and The Imitation Game inspired TV Ate My Wardrobe to dip my toes into film costume design analysis; I have yet to see Inherent Vice and Selma (they are both on my list) but this is a strong category. Yesterday I watched The Theory of Everything and it covers all my 60s/70s dress and knitwear coveting areas and The Grand Budapest Hotel is striking in its heightened realism.

Trish Summerville created some of my favorite costumes in 2013 with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and her work was no less striking for a contemporary drama for Gone Girl as I’m still thinking about Amy’s black and white collar dress. Kurt and Bart took over from Trish Summerville on The Hunger Games and they showed how Effie can still be super stylish when all she has is drab grey and no wigs to work with.

Congratulations to all the nominees and I look forward to February 17 to see who picks up the awards.

New Girl 4.12 “Shark” Review: “I am Woman, the Smartest Species of them All”

7 Jan

The construction work that led to the loft getting a landline earlier this season on New Girl is back to stir up a debate between Schmidt and Jess with regards to getting things done; Schmidt thinks palms need to be greased whereas Jess is all for friendliness and by the book actions. Appearances are not all they seem as Nick and Coach discover when Winston graduates from the police academy and they fret for his safety when they see the small stature of his training officer, Aly. They can’t quite figure out how the guy who paints cat bowls for not only his cat but his roommates – where is Ferguson? – isn’t going to get stabbed by a kid on the job and their attempts to protect their friend are both dumb and very sweet.

New girl 4.12 SchmidtThe shark versus dolphin approach is reminiscent of the Jess/Nick debate from “Landlord” back in season 1 when Nick argued there is always an ulterior motive for generous acts (on this occasion he was proven right as their landlord thought they were going to have a threeway – this is still one of my favorite episodes). The winner of this debate between Schmidt and Jess is vague in that Jess is successful in getting the night construction switched to the daytime; however she has to use some nefarious tactics for this victory. No palms are greased, nor does she send an envelope filled with fake blood and a note saying “I know” instead she targets one of Schmidt’s weaknesses with his vanity.

Earlier in the episode Schmidt frets about his new tailor and how his cuff lengths on his jacket are not quite right, so when Cece mentions his cuffs seem a little off right before he is meant to argue in favor of nighttime construction it throws him off in the exact way Jess predicted. Jess feels a little dirty for resorting to this manipulative tactic (after some awkward straw mouth missing gloating) but really Schmidt had failed with his attempt to get Councilwoman Fawn Moscato (played brilliantly by Zoe Lister Jones with a character who wouldn’t be out of place in Pawnee) on side. Moscato is the kind of woman who can get Schmidt to do her bidding as she’s a little bit mean and has all the power (much like his relationship with his boss in season 2); she manages to appeal to everything he’s turned on by. Have you ever seen Schmidt look happier or more puppy like than when he stuck his head out of the window after he took hairspray to the face?

Schmidt is even impressed with how Jess effectively used his insecurity against him and it adds validity to his shark argument. The highlight of Jess agitating Schmidt comes much earlier in the episode as she keeps invoking the word “bro” and when everyone else follows suit it becomes even funnier as Schmidt gets more wound up.

Jess does attempt to go through all the correct channels, first by filling in endless forms while Ryan gets bonkers horny on red wine. Followed by performing a speech with visual aids – the visual aid is Ryan dressed as a construction worker and he continues to be impossibly handsome – that lays out the argument in a succinct manner. It’s very Jessica Day. A quick word on Ryan and I am so glad he has become more than just the standard 3 episode arc love interest as he doesn’t feel out of place in this group, plus the aforementioned handsome. He is still pretty perfect and this might be a problem in the future as currently the only conflict comes from the forbidden aspect of their relationship, but at the moment I am really enjoying what Julian Morris is bringing to the show. We do learn that Ryan’s uncle was arrested for having sex with a dolphin and Cece’s reaction to this random piece of Ryan information is pretty much perfect as she is “having a lot of difficulty nailing” him down.

This is a good guest star week and Nasim Pedrad slots in nicely to the New Girl world taking no shit from Nick and Coach as they air their concerns about Winston’s new career. I can understand why they might worry for their friend after watching Winston’s crazy antics for the last few years (although I really need to see Evil Winston – flashbacks please!), but dudes don’t judge how badass a woman is by her stature because she will kick your ass. As is the norm there are a lot of very funny Winston moments this week with his crossword idea being high up there for me; “Who likes cats? Winston across.” There is a whiff of Let’s Be Cops to this plot which was going to happen at some point with this storyline and if that movie had been Nick and Coach trail Winston I would have been much happier.

New Girl Style Watch

New Girl 4.12 JessThis outfit is a twofer as Jess is wearing a super cute Eva Franco summer dress paired with a black blazer from J. Crew which is giving me all the Liz Lemon feelings right now.
