Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set (Emmy Special)

21 Sep

An all Emmy weekend edition of “Behind the Insta-Scenes” including pre-parties, getting ready and the actual awards.

I’ve said this many times before, but out of all the cast reunions the Friday Night Lights ones give me the most feeeeeeelings. This is ultimate.

Stranger Things kids are in big demand and the height difference here just made me laugh a lot.

I also appreciate the fact that actors will freak out over other actors. Also still so here for Henry Jennings in a turtleneck.

Chris Geere also demonstrating good internal freak out here.

And who wouldn’t be thrilled to meet this handsome chap. Good bow tie work.

Emmy weekend on Instagram is pretty much a series of these kinds of pictures. This one makes me so happy.

And another.

Maisie Williams didn’t win, but she did get an edible Emmy. Sounds pretty great to me.

Lots of getting ready Emmy stories including Keri Russell’s make-up routine. Her eyebrows in this shot are giving me inspiration for the big day on Saturday.

Yara Shahidi was one of our best dressed over the weekend and she switched things up after the awards giving a detailed photo diary of her Emmy night for Elle.

Constance Zimmer got a bold blunt bob on Emmy day and it looks fabulous against her super pink frock.

Super stylist Ilaria Urbinati definitely deserves some pizza.

And now for the after. Comfy tee on, amazing dress in hand.

Tom Cullen delivered on the proud boyfriend looking on at his award winning lady.

And also on the post party arrangements from earlier in the weekend. Fave couple alert.

NYFW Coach 1941: Stranger Things and T-Rex Sweaters

14 Sep

A quick New York Fashion Week check-in because this Stranger Things front row pairing deserves a post of their own especially as the sweater I have long been coveting makes an appearance.

Winona Ryder was joined by co-star Millie Bobby Brown at the Coach 1941 Women’s Spring 2017 show and this is making me want more of them together when Stranger Things returns for season 2.winona-ryder-and-millie-bobby-brownThere’s a lot of affection here and as with Kiernan Shipka before her I am already aware that Millie Bobby is way cooler than I ever was at such a young age (and am now). Winona is always the coolest.

Now to the T-Rex sweater and this is a variation of one we featured in a Fantasy Costuming post this time last year after the Coach show (for Gina on Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Another version of this item has also graced these pages courtesy of Michael B. Jordan and the design Ryder is wearing is from the menswear collection.

And now for a selection of the different Coach T-Rex items I would love in my wardrobe:

The actual new Spring 2017 had far too much sheer for my liking and you can see the whole collection here.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

7 Sep

Instagram delivers on the TV style front, film festival glamour and on set singing this week. Plus find out some intimate You’re the Worst information and the usual amount of sweater and lipstick coveting.

The Leftovers is still shooting its final season out in Australia and I am glad to see Justin Theroux will be sporting his beard throughout. Liv Tyler captures him here working the leopard print in the hair and makeup trailer.

It has been a bit of a Leftovers watching week as I got the second season for my birthday and I wrote about Kevin’s karaoke here.

The kids from Stranger Things crushed their appearance on The Tonight Show and Questlove captures some of the backstage madness in this group selfie.

Still no details about who Matthew Rhys is playing on Girls but here he is shooting a scene with Lena Dunham, beard and all.

Mindy Kaling has been documenting Adam Pally eating chips on the set of The Mindy Project and I am here for it.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ3l0hzjqIc/?taken-by=mindykaling&hl=en

Mindy also continues to document the costuming from her show and studs are definitely in this season.

Spikes too and I’m not sure if this costume or Taraji P. Henson’s own collection. Either way they look terrifying and incredible in equal measure.

The search for the perfect Emmy dress continues and I wonder if we will see any of these on the red carpet come September 18.

I can only see half this sweater, but I know I love it.

You’re the Worst returned last week with a fabulous episode and the cast took over the Backstage Instagram. There’s plenty of behind the scenes videos including Chris Geere showing off a modesty pouch/cock sock. He definitely had to wear one in the season premiere.

Standard lipstick and sunglasses envy.

Chris Geere was also understandably excited to make his talk show debut on The Late Show.

One of my favorite costume designers with one of my favorite actresses. Looking forward to seeing what this pairing brings.

Now for one of my makeup artist faves with another Orange is the New Black stars and this series of photos of Natasha Lyonne are fantastic.

The iZombie set continues to deliver on the fun and the songs.

Greg Williams delivers once again on intimate photographs from the Venice Film Festival and here are a few of my favorites. Starting with Jake getting ready, just because.

Getting up close with super couple Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber. Luckily this dress doesn’t require some awkward lying down.

When in Venice you’ve got to have a boat shot. For more from Greg Williams check out his portraits from the festival at Vanity Fair.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

1 Sep

One of the busiest months of the year in terms of TV and fashion is here so this week’s “Out of the Box” is a fun mix of film festival attire, talk shows and magazine editorials. While I’m on the subject of September and how busy it is you can now also sign up to my weekly newsletter here. The first one is all about this time of year and is an extension of everything TV Ate My Wardrobe.Emma StoneEmma Stone at the Venice Film Festival wearing a delightful floral Giambattista Valli, which is an ideal daytime photocall outfit for La La Land. Paired with suede ochre heels gives this a late 70s feel that I am – in non-shocking news – in love with. I am very excited about this movie and the costume design is already giving me all the heart eyes.Zooey DeschanelGiving off casual cool at Jimmy Kimmel Live! is Zooey Deschanel and I’ve been after a good pair of denim dungarees. To me they are jumpsuit adjacent in that I don’t own a pair and they give me the same clothing related bathroom fears.

On the show Deschanel also looked great in a black ensemble paired with some super sparkly amazing flats and a collar that ticks all the boxes. Plus she talked about how much her daughter loves cheese, her TV directorial debut and the New Girl crossover with Brooklyn Nine-Nine.Aja Naomi KingInterview Magazine continues to deliver on great photoshoots and interviews – well I guess it is the title of the magazine – and this week HTGAWM’s Aja Naomi King chats with OITNB’s Danielle Brooks about their classic training, TV and King’s role in The Birth of a Nation. Also working with Viola Davis sounds as incredible as you probably imagined it would be.

“She brings you in, and it feels like family. When you’re in that kind of family environment, when you’re tasked with doing something difficult, you can allow yourself to be brave because you know you’re surrounded by people that love you, that only want the best for you. From day one, it’s been that wonderful. I was terrified. That first scene we’re in together in the pilot, I was so scared. Here she is, being amazing in this room, and I just want her to think I’m amazing too.”Aya Cash Interview MagAlso in Interview is Aya Cash and I am thrilled You’re the Worst is back for a third season. The premiere episode is really great, made me teary and sparked an important shower related debate.  As with the Aja Naomi King picture Aya Cash nails the disarming black and white shot in stunning fashion.

In the interview Cash discusses how Stephen Falk had to fight for her to get the part of Gretchen, audition rejections, the doors You’re the Worst has opened and what she’d be doing if she wasn’t acting. This also has me very excited:

“I’m starting to produce. I’m developing a project for myself based on one of my mom’s books. I really don’t have a specific idea of where I want my career to go, I just have an idea of wanting to continue to work and work on things that I like and think are good. I don’t need to be crazy rich and crazy famous. I would just like to keep going.”Aya CashThis all-Prada ensemble shot is also fantastic and I couldn’t pick between the two. For more from this Interview shoot head here.Rachel WeiszChunky knit season is upon us and upstate New York is the place for these late summer shoots as The Edit shows with this fantastic Rachel Weisz spread. This turtleneck sweater is perhaps a tad outside my budget and it is still too warm for such garments, but I can dream.Stranger Things kidsStranger Things is one of the undeniable hits of the summer and part of the reason for its success and resonance is the kids at the center of the story. Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo all appeared on The Tonight Show this week timed perfectly for the season 2 pickup announcement. Style wise it has been a lot of Winona (for good reason) on here, but the kids dominated this piece I wrote.

And in real life they are pretty adorable and charming. Outfit wise they are all perfect and Millie Bobby Brown’s dress and flats are super cute. Points for all. Plus she crushes Nicki Minaj’s “Monster” verse.

Winona Ryder Covers New York Magazine: Talks Stranger Things

8 Aug

It is the best time of year for magazine covers and while this issue of New York Magazine isn’t a September issue per se (New York is bi-monthly) it is their big fashion issue making it September issue adjacent. It helps that every year their fashion issue, which arrives just before New York Fashion Week – in both February and September – tends to deliver big on the cover star including Serena Williams, Joni Mitchell, Lupita Nyong’o and Christina Hendricks and this is no exception.

Winona Ryder has been thrust back into the spotlight recently thanks to the success of Stranger Things and even if this show wasn’t getting so much praise I think the Winona renaissance would be occurring regardless; it fits in with the 90s nostalgia that is so strong right now and because she is Winona, forever.

Cover wise this is so striking; such a simple set up and so commanding as Ryder stares directly at the viewer. I’m normally so blah when it comes to the wet hair look, but here it is working like a charm as is the fresh faced makeup and simple white tee styling.

The interview itself is also pretty revealing with the Ryder discussing in detail the narrative she feels like has been set for her and how it is hard to change the story. This is regards to an interview she did with Diane Sawyer in 1999 while promoting Girl, Interrupted (the book and film are forever faves of mine) where she discussed her own experiences of anxiety and depression and how this thread has weaved its way in how she is perceived right through to her current role in Stranger Things:

“There’s a line in the show where someone says [of her Stranger Things character], ‘She’s had anxiety problems in the past.’ A lot of people have picked up on that, like, ‘Oh, you know, she’s crazy.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, wait a second, she’s struggling.’ Two kids, deadbeat dad, working her ass off. Who wouldn’t be anxious? Even that word, anxious. It’s a bad word. And so like all of these words — it’s kind of what I tried to do with Girl, Interrupted, and why I was so invested in that book and trying to get it made [as a movie]. My whole point was, this happens to every girl, almost.”

The whole interview is really enlightening in terms of Joyce on Stranger Things, the boxes we put people in and her position in pop culture as the 90s cool girl (not the Gone Girl kind of ‘cool girl’). Plus the photo shoot delivers on striking shots; mixing the perfect blend of grunge with contemporary including this Valentino sweater and skirt ensemble paired with Roger Vivier sneakers (if this was 1996 those would be DM boots) in the photo below.Winona Ryder The Cut

And I’ve written about Stranger Things for The Observer and Collider.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

28 Jul

After the Comic-Con Instagram special we resume normal service and a fun mix of returning to set with iZombie, Barb from Stranger Things love, saying goodbye to Looking and celeb birthday wishes from some of our favorites. Pretty much a whole lot of dreaminess.

Amy Sedaris knows. #Barb4EVA.

A very cute dress and Amy Sedaris is also repping bestie Sarah Jessica Parker in a pair of her pumps.

I haven’t watched the Looking movie yet as I’m saving it – sometimes I do this when I know there will be no more – but Frankie J Alvarez is giving me all the feelings as he documents the end of this special show.

Back from Comic-Con and the lab coats are back on for the iZombie autopsy team.

New Girl creator Liz Meriwether has been covering both political conventions for Vulture and it has been wonderful, hilarious and emotional.

Everything about this is perfect.

Also in the category of best celeb birthday wishes.

And January Jones should continue to caption all Mad Men promo shots.

Oh, hello.

Elementary season 5 sneak peek; don’t think the landing will be quite this comfortable for Sherlock.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BILAoojgxML/?taken-by=mewins&hl=en

BrainDead is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows of the summer; the cast is great, it is fun and the costuming is highly covetable. Former Good Wife costume designer Daniel Lawson continues to hit it out of the park.

A reminder that I still need to watch BoJack Horseman. I don’t know how I have let it get to three seasons without seeing any (I know).

An important look back from Brie Larson. We are so lucky to have her share this experience in relation to where she was and where she is now. And also that dress is wonderful. Sometimes what you have in your closet is all you need.

Music Monday: A Hazy Shade of Winter on Stranger Things

18 Jul

Stranger Things is here for all your coming of age movie nostalgia needs and the new 8-part Netflix series delivers on the early 80s front on a variety of levels. The music is one thing that instantly stands out blending a tension building synth score with a variety of standout songs including The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” threading throughout. Stranger ThingsOne standout moment comes at the end of the second episode when we smash to the credits just as the guitar kicks in on The Bangle’s version of the classic Simon & Garfunkel track “A Hazy Shade of Winter.” Simon & Garfunkel have a special place in my heart and I have been listening to them for as long as I can remember – they were a staple cassette choice in car journeys – and I am always thrilled to hear one of their tracks getting used; cover version or original.

Even though you will want to click straight on the next episode (because whoa that ending) and Netflix might even autoplay (as it rudely tried to do with me) take a moment to enjoy this song choice. Or click on the video below.
