Out of the Box: Look of the Week – Part 2

30 Dec

Rounding off the Best of 2016 series with Part 2 of our favorite “Out of the Box” moments. Last week we dedicated the first part to the magazine covers that stood out and now it is time for style highs from red carpets, events, awards and panels.

The only rule was they had to appear as part of “Out of the Box” and we’ve got a good mix of casual, fancy and everything in-between.Evan Rachel WoodBest LadySuitWatch2016

So many fantastic Evan Rachel Wood ladysuit moments in 2016 and it was super hard to pick a winner. This red one is incredible, but the collar, lipstick and metallic pumps from back in June take the prize.Yara Shahidi

Tracee Ellis RossBest Sequins: TV Mother/Daughter Edition

Yara Shahidi is not only 2016’s best dressed teen, but an overall style icon for the year. This super sparkly sequin Tracy Reese dress that she wore to the BET Awards gives me so much joy as does Tracee Ellis Ross at PaleyFest in March.julianne-mooreBest Sequins – Awards Edition

Continuing the sequin love and we’ve got the whole year covered as this was pretty recent; Julianne Moore in Tom Ford to celebrate Tom Ford at one of the many film award season events. Alicia VikanderBest Post-Oscar Party

It is not just the Oscar that makes Alicia Vikander’s post-Oscar Louis Vuitton much better than the yellow Beauty and the Beast style gown she wore to the actual ceremony. Everything about this is incredible and just because it is black it is far from boring; so many fantastic sequins in 2016.Brie LarsonBest Pattern – Eyes

First up Jacob Tremblay is 2016’s best dressed kid and he also outdid a lot of his older male counterparts. At the pre-Oscar photocall his tie matches his onscreen mom Brie Larson’s super fun Emilia Wickstead skirt and blouse. An instant standout style moment that brings much needed whimsy. Mary Elizabeth WinsteadBest Pattern – Lips

Mary Elizabeth Winstead was not only one of the best dressed characters on TV this year, but she also brought it on the red carpet. This Victoria Beckham red lip patterned dress is very high on my covet list.Kirsten DunstBest Cannes

Serving on the jury at Cannes this year meant so many amazing Kirsten Dunst ensembles from the fancy to casual chic; it is this yellow Dior daytime perfection with an A+ red lipstick that was my favorite. Lupita Nyong'oBest Pattern Clashing

Pleats tend to make me want to twirl and Lupita Nyongo’s colorful Prada frock at the Obie Awards is giving me those feelings. It could look like a lot against the equally bold floral backdrop and yet Nyong’o is totally pulling this off.Aubrey PlazaTatiana Maslany ColbertBest Talk Show Entrance

Aubrey Plaza is a forever style icon and has featured in these end of year lists in the past. First she started my pleated leather skirt obsession and in June 2016 she arrived at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in pretty much my dream casual outfit. Tatiana Maslany on the other hand is doing the sneakers with heels in her hand thing while also arriving at The Late Show and she is another casual dress queen. caitriona-balfeBest Black and White

Everything about Caitriona Balfe’s Burberry gown is a dream at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards showing that she looks fantastic in any era. I’m excited to see what she will wear to the Golden Globes in a couple of weeks.mads-mikkelsenBest Hannibal

Mads Mikkelsen looks really great in a suit and this is the first Best of year without any Hannibal. Thankfully at the Doctor Strange premiere Mads is wearing a suit that wouldn’t look out of place on the famous cannibal he plays. matthew-rhys-and-keri-russell-operaBest Cape

Serving up so much drama at the Met Opera in September and Keri Russell has worn Stephane Rolland for three very dressy events this year – the other two being at the White House and Emmys – and this black caped number is my overall favorite. A very fancy date night with Matthew Rhys. constance-zimmer-and-shiri-applebyBest Friends

Thankfully things are a lot better IRL between Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby than their UnREAL counterparts and while season 2 was super messy/missed the mark in places, the subsequent promo tour and red carpet appearances always delivered.

This is from the Elle Women in Hollywood celebration at the end of October; they are giving off metallic dress and flaming hot jumpsuit excellence.Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Elisabeth Olsen, Michael B. JordanBest Sunglasses

As the Fug Girls like to say “Everybody looks hotter in sunglasses” and the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic helps prove this theory. Summer wardrobe delights from Elizabeth Olsen, Michael B. Jordan, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale.TCA You're the WorstBest TCA

Panel outfits are an “Out of the Box” fave as they tend to deliver on the casual cool. With Aya Cash she also delivers on great lipstick and she also let me know what brand and color (Inglot 13). I picked it up while on honeymoon and it is fantastic. Thanks, Aya!2 Dope QueensBest Crown

To my favorite podcast of the year and two women that made 2016 a whole lot better (including the time they were there for me when I traveled home on the train after my dad died in July). This fabulous shot of Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson from The New York Times puts the crown in 2 Dope Queens.Sarah Paulson and Sterling K BrownBest Look of the Week

I said this at the time and I’ll say it again, but the way Sarah Paulson is looking at Sterling K. Brown is how I would look at Sterling K. Brown. Marcia and Chris 4EVA.

Best of TV Costuming 2016: The Americans, Vulnerability and the Jennifer Disguise

14 Dec

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2016” costume series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.

Kicking off with the show which would be top of my list (and has been for the last few years) and The Americans continues the impossible task of somehow getting even better each season and upping the stakes/tension levels. In previous end of year essays about this show we have discussed wigs, the marriage disguise and the act of removing and revealing the truth.

This year is a combination of all of those things as we take a closer look at costume designer Katie Irish’s work with a focus on Elizabeth Jennings, the Jennifer disguise and where we find her at the mid-point of season 4 in the episode “Travel Agents.”

Performance wise it doesn’t get much better than what Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys and Alison Wright are doing this season (and the ones before) and this episode showcases the best of this very complicated dynamic.

the-americans-4-07The implications of Philip removing his Clark cover in the penultimate episode of season 3 (discussed in detail here) are huge; for whom Philip and Elizabeth are as partners in both the professional and personal. By showing his real face he risks the identities they have crafted and lived over twenty years and this act could be read as one of betrayal. It doesn’t help matters that Elizabeth finds out what Philip did when she turns up at the safe house all dressed up as Jennifer (Clark’s sister) – lovely Jenny – and sees her husband without his disguise on.

What he did was an in the moment choice, but he could’ve at least given her a heads up rather than reveal it in this bombshell manner. Three weeks is a long time to be sitting on this secret and Philip’s sheepish reaction is very much their version of getting caught in the act.

Without Clark, Jennifer is nothing and it becomes apparent to Martha that their relationship is definitely not brother and sister; but the Jennifer disguise stays on because they can’t risk her face being seen by someone who has no love or loyalty toward her. It is a humiliating moment for Elizabeth and not just because the Jennifer cover isn’t entirely flattering.jennifer-the-americansAs the seasons have progressed Elizabeth’s tough exterior remains tough, but through falling in actual love with her arranged suitor she has become emotionally vulnerable and the Martha situation brings all these feelings of jealousy to the surface. This isn’t a conventional love triangle and the last time Elizabeth showed outward signs of Martha curiosity/envy was back in season 2 when Martha referred to Clark’s bedroom prowess (not a good conversation point with a sibling or as it turns out in this case his wife) and yet this is about more than just sex. They have both slept with so many other people as part of their job and this goes much deeper than that.

Sex does play a role and it is a form of communication when the words are hard to find or speak; Elizabeth does attempt to stamp her position as wife (and give them both a much needed release) and yet there is a nagging feeling that can’t be subdued.

The thing about the Jennifer look is that she is meant to be unassuming and like a lot of the spy costumes she is meant to be unmemorable. The glasses swap her face and her clothing is pretty ‘Plain Jane’ and she is very much the original Barb. These granny frames are all kinds of endearing, however there is no glamour here; which is in strong contrast to Elizabeth’s other main cover from this season as the super ’80s stylish Patty. The Americans 4.08 Young Hee and ElizabethAlso RIP to this look as Patty ‘killed herself’ and I am looking forward to whatever new creations costume designer Kate Irish comes up with for the forthcoming season (check out Irish’s Instagram for shots of her research and more BTS from The Americans).the-americans-4-07-travel-agentsSo not only does Elizabeth have to watch her de-wigged husband interact with this woman who he also calls his wife, but she has to do so all while dressed in a confidence crushing appearance (Keri Russell talks about the Jennifer disguise as part of 92Y Americans panel and explains that it is a “little rough” on her self-esteem).

Plus she gets questions like this from Martha “Are you sleeping with my husband?” and rather than go for an “Actually” truth response she takes the much easier road of lying to prevent a figurative gut punch. Quickly followed by a literal one.The Americans 4.07 ElizabethEmotional devastation comes in many forms over the course of this season and The Americans level of romance isn’t one coated in chocolates and flowers. However as a show about marriage it nails the ups and downs of romantic love with Elizabeth uncharacteristically laying out her fears for Philip to see, all while dressed as Clark’s sister Jenny. She is so exposed and it doesn’t matter that her mane of hair is stuffed in that wig (another amazing feat).

The glasses are removed because you don’t want to have a conversation like this with half your faced covered, but the wig and ill fitting pink coat remains (the coat and layers is pure Jennifer, but also act as an IRL bump concealer). Elizabeth poses a hypothetical question where she wonders if Philip would go with Martha if he could; she dreads he’ll say yes because he wants the easier life with a more emotionally available woman, but of course this couldn’t be further from how Philip actually feels and he responds with a hint of confused anger at such a thought.

So much gets said with a look and one of The Americans’ strengths is economy of words; this scene delivers on the complexities of this marriage, how hard it is to show this level of vulnerability and how you can be mad that the person you love could even consider such a thought. Ending with a passionate embrace as Elizabeth still clutches her glasses and the realization that he needs to stay cements what we already knew; these two are made for each other and there is no hypothetical situation Philip would be happy with that doesn’t involve his wife. The first one.The Americans 4.08 argumentIt is also fun viewing this scene in juxtaposition to the very honest marriage discussion (okay screaming match) in the following episode. Here Philip is reassuring his wife that this is the life he wants and she is the one he loves, cut to their big hallway blowout which brings up the names of betrayals and former lovers they haven’t forgotten. The Martha situation is a sticky one, but this has nothing on Gregory or Irina. No wigs or glasses present in this trip down romantic rival memory lane.

This episode directed by Matthew Rhys is the best of the season, but this scene in “Travel Agents” is the one which is the true standout for me; the fact that it involves Elizabeth dressed as Jennifer answering a question she won’t be able to take back and Philip is so emphatic with his answer underscores how good every level of The Americans is from the acting, writing, directing to the costuming and hair/makeup.

Watch the scene below and The Americans returns for season 5 next year and if I had to guess I’d say March again, but I’m sure we’ll find out the date next month during TCA.

An Evening with The Americans: Panel Highlights

31 Oct

The Americans has just started shooting its penultimate season, but it won’t be back for at least a few months. To fill the wig and complicated relationship void showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields joined stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys at the 92nd Street Y as part of The Hollywood Reporter’s TV Talks panel series to discuss all things The Americans.

Regular readers will know how much I enjoy a good panel/roundtable (movie award season is coming!) and as this one has the bonus of being about my favorite show.the-americans-panelWeisberg and Fields are both very cautious when revealing anything that could be considered a spoiler so if you want some season 5 secrets then you might be disappointed. Instead what follows is a fascinating chat about the process of making this show from a writing and acting standpoint. It is also very funny at times with Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys displaying the kind of back and forth ease/humor that you would hope to expect from an IRL couple.

This includes Rhys joking about how he directed Russell during her big Paige confrontation scene in “The Magic of David Copperfield V: The Statue of Liberty Disappears” explaining that it was a “very simple scene to direct because Keri was pregnant at the time, so I just said pretend like you’re talking to me.” He also made Holly Taylor cry for real during this scene and he seems to feel very bad about this.

One of the most revealing aspects of this scene discussion was the behind the scenes debate in the editing room about whether to CGI out the vein which grew more inflamed on Russell’s face as Elizabeth’s anger at Paige increased. Joel Fields fought the corner of keeping it as it was and Russell loved that her face naturally looked like this as “You’re mad. Why would I want to be a pretty version of that? Like I want to be mad, but I want to be pretty.”

Russell also mentions that she understood why this conversation took place; “In everyone’s defense they were just trying to protect me.” It really is a stunning moment and physical performance from Keri Russell’s face parts so I am thrilled they didn’t alter it in post.matthew-rhys-and-keri-russellWhile talking about what it is like to work with the person you also go home with Rhys a little hesitantly at first takes the lead referring to the duality of it all “it’s amazing and it’s difficult. And it’s challenging and exciting. It’s everything.” And that so far they seem to be getting away with it.

One of the answers that surprised some of the audience was when Rhys responded to ‘Did Philip love Martha?’ with a quick “no.” In the way he played it (and I read it) his feelings for her were intrinsically linked to guilt rather than love and there is an aspect of caring, but not being in love. There were lots of Martha questions from the audience – all audience Qs should be done on cards as it really speeds up the process – and she is an important character.

Of course this being Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields they didn’t reveal whether they have plans to bring her back. The only new S5 info was that Philip and Elizabeth would have some different operations to deal with as most of their old ones wrapped up in S4. And there are some theories from the actors about how they would like to see the show wrap up including a dramatic interpretation by Matthew Rhys that has him going out in a blaze of glory.

It wouldn’t be an Americans panel without a little bit of wig/disguise chat and Russell and Rhys were asked to name their favorite disguise the other has worn. This resulted in a Margo Martindale anecdote that is worth clicking on the link below (and comes just before the hour mark).

Praise for Holly Taylor (and whether she has a real tattoo or not) was scattered throughout and how the Paige reveal scene is one of the hardest they have ever shot as it was a lot more heartbreaking on a personal level than Russell expected. This also allows Rhys to gift us with a Monty Python impression and for how serious this show is the set life sure sounds like a lot of fun.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

14 Oct

This is the last part of the regular column catch up train (see also “Behind the Insta-Scenes“) and so this is a sort of “Look of the Last Three Weeks.”

In this post-Emmys time – I have been writing about Emmys fashion for so long it feels odd now we’re past it – there are still plenty of fancy pants events, premieres, film festivals and magazine covers.
matthew-rhys-and-keri-russell-operaKeri Russell and Matthew Rhys attended the Met Opera in style a couple of weeks ago with Russell opting for Stephane Rolland for the third time in recent months (see also the Emmys and the White House state dinner).

This caped jumpsuit might be my favorite of the three and it brings all the elegant drama. It is also fun watching the reduction of Matthew Rhys’ hiatus beard from the White House through to the Emmys and then this. After all they have started shooting season 5 now.

It was a tossup between this appearance and the fantastic lady suit/pussy bow blouse combination Keri Russell wore to another recent event, but the cape won out this time.emily-blunt-and-john-krasinskiKeeping with the couple faves and a lipstick/dress color delight from Emily Blunt in Prada at the New York premiere for The Girl on the Train last week. Also this live reading of Good Will Hunting pretty much sounds like the best thing ever.sjp-and-cynthia-nixonAs regular readers will know, I am a big fan of former co-stars who come out to support each other with their new projects so Cynthia Nixon at the Divorce premiere is a big tick in this box. Plus the Miranda/Carrie friendship always hit me in the feelings department (“My Motherboard, My Self” is my favorite SATC episode) so this appearance gets a double tick. There is so much joy in this photo and I also think they both look great.

Oh and one episode into Divorce (which I really liked) and I am already obsessed with SJP’s coat collection – so thankful this show is set during winter – and her bedspread.yara-shahidi-and-michelle-obamaThis week has been a shitty one politically, but I am so thankful for Michelle Obama for this speech and for taking part in events like Glamour’s “A Brighter Future: A Global Conversation on Girls’ Education.” Here she is with Black-ish star Yara Shahidi and both are crushing it on the pattern front. High fives for all.naomie-harrisNow for the London Film Festival and at the Moonlight premiere Naomie Harris wears a beautiful Valentino in the rare category of “sheer that I like.” Pairing it with a colorful pair of pumps really sets the look off. lupita-nyongo-elleElle’s annual “Women in Hollywood” issue is here and Lupita Nyong’o scores another fantastic cover shot while also discussing the importance of seeing people who look like you on screen and in magazines:

“I grew up with a very limited mirror of myself. I watched a lot of TV, but the people on it were always light skinned. And now I have a platform that takes me into people’s houses and onto the pages of their magazines.”variety-laverne-cox“Power of Women” is Variety’s annual celebration of women in Hollywood who are making a difference with their philanthropic work. One of those women is Laverne Cox and she is being honored for “changing the narrative around LGBTQ communities.”

Cox has been on many magazine covers (this is her second for Variety) with visibility being an important factor and Cox explains that “So many people have been inspired to live their truth as trans people, and so many people have begun to think differently about who transgender people are.”

This is another stunning image and the color of the dress and the way this shot is lit gives off a feeling of hope.jon-hammWinter is coming and that means all the knitwear and coat editorials; Mr Porter scores an early win with Jon Hamm serving up so much charisma in this week’s profile and accompanying photoshoot. The whole piece is good, but this passage/description of Hamm really stood out to me:

“Even in his baseball cap, at 45, Mr Hamm is as comely as you’d expect from a man whose first credit was “Gorgeous Guy at Bar” in an episode of Ally McBeal. One women’s magazine described him as “astronaut handsome”, not that astronauts are selected on looks, duh, but it does capture his capable, reassuring, 1950s air and captain-like quality. His voice really does insinuate that everything’s going to be OK, but there’s something soulful about him, something indefinable that makes you hope he’s going to be OK, too.”

It is part of the reason why a Don Draper pitch worked so well; the voice and face combined. Also there are photos of him hiding in the sweaters if you really need another reason to click.

Best of the 2016 Emmys Red Carpet: Bold Color and Couples

19 Sep

Game of Thrones and American Crime Story dominated the actual Emmy awards and there were also plenty of surprise winners. Of course a few grumbles were had and while I was rooting hard for The Americans I can’t be sad when Tatiana Maslany and Rami Malek won in the main acting categories.

This was also a really strong red carpet year and the first of today’s bumper posts showcases the array of bold color frocks and adorable couples.sarah-paulsonSarah Paulson in my actual favorite look of the night in an incredible plunging Prada gown that made me full gasp when I first saw her and while girlfriend Holland Taylor was absent (she is currently rehearsing The Front Page on Broadway), she made sure to give plenty of shout-outs on both the red carpet and when she won.tatiana-maslany-and-tom-cullen

Best of the Pre-Emmy Parties: Vanity Fair and BAFTA

18 Sep

More pre-Emmy gaming at the Vanity Fair and FX party with a whole host of TV Ate My Wardrobe faves and this party also showcases just how good FX is at the moment. Plus the annual BAFTA LA Tea Party, which always delivers on the daytime shindig attire.keri-russell-and-matthew-rhysGot to kick off with the show that dominates a lot of costume chat in these parts; Keri Russell always brings the casual glam to events like this and for this occasion Matthew Rhys has dialed back on the hiatus beard grizzle with a trim. Nice color suit too and I am looking forward to seeing more of this IRL couple tonight.keirdrich-sellatiAnd this is several shades of adorable from the Americans kids and Keidrich Sellati’s turtleneck/blazer combo is levels of spy and casual attire that his TV dad would wear. schwimmer-paulson-brownDelightful is the word I would use to describe this photo with the cast of American Crime Story giving off all the good vibes. Excellent lipstick choice from Sarah Paulson too.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

7 Sep

Instagram delivers on the TV style front, film festival glamour and on set singing this week. Plus find out some intimate You’re the Worst information and the usual amount of sweater and lipstick coveting.

The Leftovers is still shooting its final season out in Australia and I am glad to see Justin Theroux will be sporting his beard throughout. Liv Tyler captures him here working the leopard print in the hair and makeup trailer.

It has been a bit of a Leftovers watching week as I got the second season for my birthday and I wrote about Kevin’s karaoke here.

The kids from Stranger Things crushed their appearance on The Tonight Show and Questlove captures some of the backstage madness in this group selfie.

Still no details about who Matthew Rhys is playing on Girls but here he is shooting a scene with Lena Dunham, beard and all.

Mindy Kaling has been documenting Adam Pally eating chips on the set of The Mindy Project and I am here for it.

Mindy also continues to document the costuming from her show and studs are definitely in this season.

Spikes too and I’m not sure if this costume or Taraji P. Henson’s own collection. Either way they look terrifying and incredible in equal measure.

The search for the perfect Emmy dress continues and I wonder if we will see any of these on the red carpet come September 18.

I can only see half this sweater, but I know I love it.

You’re the Worst returned last week with a fabulous episode and the cast took over the Backstage Instagram. There’s plenty of behind the scenes videos including Chris Geere showing off a modesty pouch/cock sock. He definitely had to wear one in the season premiere.

Standard lipstick and sunglasses envy.

Chris Geere was also understandably excited to make his talk show debut on The Late Show.

One of my favorite costume designers with one of my favorite actresses. Looking forward to seeing what this pairing brings.

Now for one of my makeup artist faves with another Orange is the New Black stars and this series of photos of Natasha Lyonne are fantastic.

The iZombie set continues to deliver on the fun and the songs.

Greg Williams delivers once again on intimate photographs from the Venice Film Festival and here are a few of my favorites. Starting with Jake getting ready, just because.

Getting up close with super couple Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber. Luckily this dress doesn’t require some awkward lying down.

When in Venice you’ve got to have a boat shot. For more from Greg Williams check out his portraits from the festival at Vanity Fair.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

17 Aug

Midweek Instagram TV highlights this week include some of our weekly faves with the iZombie and You’re the Worst cast continuing their behind the scenes photo domination. Plus style highs from Yara Shahidi, James Wolk wrapped in blankets and my new costume obsession.

A combination of so many of my favorite things and Gina Rodriguez suits this styling so well. Between this and The Get Down (see more of that below) my seventies clothing obsession is alive and well.

More Jane the Virgin set antics and the return of Petra (or could it be her evil twin? – I heart this plot twist so much). Always wine.

While we’re on the subject of wine; one of TV’s biggest wine drinkers has a full glass (of grape juice) on the set of Scandal and it sounds like I need to catch up after reading this Entertainment Weekly season 6 post (I keep quitting and coming back).

This sounds like everything I would ever want from a Marnie storyline. She would be so perfect for this.

Matthew Rhys and his glorious beard are guest starring on the final season of Girls. Sadly no details are available yet so time to conjure up your best pairing for him. I am not so secretly hoping he will have something to do with Adam. Fun connection time – Matthew Rhys and Adam Driver shared the stage back in 2012 in Look Back in Anger and this also happened to be the play that got the Americans casting director interested in Rhys for Philip Jennings.

For your seventies costume design fix check out both Baz Luhrmann’s new show The Get Down on Netflix and the costume designers Insta, which is filled with shots like this one of Justice Smith. And to read my thoughts on the costuming in the first episode head here.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

12 Aug

The 2016 summer TCA press tour continued this week (and finished yesterday), which means another round of fabulous panel and party attire. This week has already given an instant entry into magazine cover of the year and the TCA awards delivered on the Mr Robot cast style dominance (and for my take on some of the costuming this season head here and here).

It isn’t all TCA on “Out of the Box” this week as Emmy campaigning continues and one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s favorite podcasts gets profiled in The New York Times.Taraji P HensonAt the Fox All-Star party Taraji P. Henson in Emanuel Ungaro is pretty much wearing my platonic ideal of a floral dress; ideal because it is perfect for a casual summer event AND because you could throw on some ankle boots with knit tights for when it starts to get colder.

The dash of pink nail polish with black Alex Wagner sandals is an excellent finishing touch.Yara ShahidiSo this shot of Yara Shahidi is from last week’s ABC day/Black-ish panel, which I somehow missed until I saw Shahidi’s Instagram. From H to T (thanks Tyra) this is a fantastic look throwing in some whimsy with leopard print shoes and ticking all my collar/bow boxes. Shahidi continues to impress not just on a teen style scale, but in general.Mindy KalingMindy Kaling goes classic in a black Dolce & Gabbana at the Hulu Mindy Project panel, but kicks the whole look with some fun peep toe pumps and a second case of fabulous pink nail polish this week.Lizzy CaplanThis Roland Mouret frock is a lot of dress to pull off and Lizzy Caplan is just the person to do that at the CBS, CW and Showtime TCA party; crushing it on non-boring shoe and lip color choices too. Claire Danes and Mandy PatinkinAt a quick glance and if you switched out the bottle of water for a cocktail then this looks more like a vacation snap; Mandy Patinkin has gone full casual and Claire Danes is still giving off a tanned glow in a stunning green and orange textured frock with a floral trim. Instead it is the Homeland panel and here’s what they revealed about the forthcoming sixth season. You're the WorstThe You’re the Worst cast continue to delight in the run up to season 3 and Aya Cash was kind enough to tell me on Twitter what lip color/brand she is wearing. I am also very much into Cash’s Rachel Comey ensemble and Kether Donohue looks lovely in blush pink. Plus, Desmin Borges and Chris Geere do the casual/smart panel balance well. TCA You're the WorstAnd one from the You’re the Worst panel because just look at these beauties.Keri Russell and Matthew RhysSpeaking of which and as Emmy campaigning season continues the “it is about time” Emmy nominees, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys have given another joint interview (this time for Deadline) and as with the THR one it is a delight of finishing each other’s sentences and talking about The Americans. This one goes more in-depth into last season and they also discuss how Russell’s pregnancy ended up giving Rhys the biggest episode of the season to direct (which he crushed) and this also happens to be both their episode submission.

This Mark Mann photo also looks like a great way to sell chambray and seersucker shirts for all your upstate New York vacation needs. 2 Dope QueensA birthday crown for Jessica Williams and a tiara for 2 Dope Queens co-host Phoebe Robinson at their show, which also happened to be Williams’ birthday and featured a surprise guest (who also happens to be a former boss). This New York Times profile covers that night and discusses this podcast and ladies fave of mine; here’s to them recording an episode when I am in New York next month. *insert prayer hands emoji*

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

4 Aug

After last week’s power dressing convention heavy “Look of the Week” we’re back on schedule with the TCA press tour dishing up the usual amount of cool/casual to slightly fancier looks. As this is the summer session it means there are plenty of floaty and floral numbers on display. Plus we’ve got a couple of other red carpet events including two TV spies infiltrating the White House.Mr Robot ladiesRami Malek and Christian Slater are great and all, but it was a really smart idea to focus this year’s Mr Robot panel on the women of this show shining a spotlight on newbie Grace Gummer, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday and Stephanie Corneliussen as they are currently the most interesting aspect of season 2.

At TCA there are often just sitting down shots so you don’t always get a good look at the whole outfit (but you do get to see the shoes) and as with talk shows it is better to pick something that looks good seated. Pretty much don’t go too short. All four women look great and I particularly like that they are all smiling/laughing as this is something we rarely get to see on Mr Robot.Mr Robot TCANow for the stand up shot which highlights the mix of outfits including collared/blazer highs – even with the sheer aspect Stephanie Corneliussen has my fave look of the quartet – and textured frocks. Basically I am so ready for a lot more of these ladies on Mr Robot and this panel and this week’s episode is very encouraging.Issa RaeI’m really looking forward to Insecure (premieres Sunday, October 9) and star/creator Issa Rae looked fabulous at the HBO panel in a black dress with a colorful patterned trim. Plus Rae is giving me new glasses frames to covet. Sharon HorganWomen are leading the way with fall comedies at HBO and Sharon Horgan was there to discuss Divorce (also on my highly anticipated list) while giving me so many Sharon from Catastrophe vibes with her attire. Yeah things get a little confusing name wise as Sharon Horgan plays Sharon on the excellent Catastrophe and typically I want everything in her wardrobe, as I do in life it would seem.SJPIn a patterned Etro frock delight is Divorce leading lady Sarah Jessica Parker and this ideal Summer TCA wear is perfect for a post panel cocktail. Michelle DockerySometimes sitting down shots obscure what makes a great looking outfit take a turn for the worst or as Samantha Powell puts it the “sheer skirt surprise.” Case in point; Michelle Dockery at the Good Behavior panel in a lovely floral Self Portrait dress, which looks great sitting down. Michelle Dockery and Ana GasteyerAt the TCA Turner summer party Michelle Dockery switched her outfit out and the collar detail is enough to make me ignore some of the other aspects I am less keen on. Ana Gasteyer is every level of casual great with a pair of fantastic stacked shoes/red toenails.Ali ShawkatAlso at the TCA Turner summer party, Alia Shawkat is pretty much rocking my whole party aesthetic; drink in one hand and plate of food in the other. Love her very cute striped knotted shirt for extra casual vibes.America Ferrera and Ben FeldmanTwo weeks in a row for America Ferrera on “Out of the Box” and this is a much more casual setting as she promotes Superstore with co-star Ben Feldman. Both have got the casual/smart ratio down and I am especially into Ferrera’s geometric detailed pumps and pink blazer.Keri Russell and Matthew RhysNow for the fancy end of the scale as stars of The Americans Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys attended a state dinner at the White House; doing so in style and insert your Russian spy jokes here.

Russell wore an elegant draped Stephane Rolland black dress with a gold panel and it is her accessories that have caught my eye including the gold hand cuff. Going classic in a black tux and a strong hiatus beard is Matthew Rhys and for more BTS getting ready (beyond Instagram) check out People’s makeup rundown with TV Ate My Wardrobe fave Tina Turnbow.

Here is Keri Russell on The Tonight Show talking about that dinner and a white dress disaster near miss.

And for a slice of adorable and utterly charming check out their joint interview over at The Hollywood Reporter, which is pretty much, my new favorite thing. They talk their terrible ideas for how The Americans should end, why it is so great to have a character like Elizabeth Jennings, how The Wine Show came into fruition, Matthew Rhys guest starring in the final season of Girls, sex scenes on The Americans and Felicity’s hair. It is really good. Zosia MametMore black dress and strong eye makeup this week and Zosia Mamet is crushing it at the 2016 ACE Awards. And at an event celebrating accessories she has picked well on the jewelry front.Gina RodriguezBlack dresses for all in our non-TCA portion of “Out of the Box” and Gina Rodriguez goes super sexy in an off the shoulder BCBGMAXAZRIA at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Grants Banquet in Beverly Hills last night. Love the silver pumps too.
