Masters of Sex 3.02 “Three’s a Crowd” Review: Keeping up Appearances

20 Jul

Moving from 1965 to 1966 with yet another time jump for Masters of Sex this season, albeit a much smaller one than last week as the book goes from galleys to publication. Oh and there is a small matter of Virginia’s to deal with as “Three’s a Crowd” picks up from where we left off with Bill guessing Virginia is pregnant.

Getting straight to the point and this episode covers two of my least favorite TV tropes – getting pregnant from that one off hook-up and opting out of an abortion at the last minute (Mad Men did both of these things). Of course people change their mind when it comes to terminating pregnancies for a multitude of personal reasons, however it is frustrating when it is used to ramp up tension and as a twist when it is later revealed the character is still pregnant.

Masters of Sex 3.02 Bill and VirginaThe pregnancy bombshell that ended last week’s episode set off a whole bunch of warning signs as to where this story might be headed and for the most part it worked better than I thought it would. In part this is because I had briefly forgotten Bill had such a low sperm count that there was no way it could be his. Virginia’s decision to keep the child as a way to make up for all the mistakes she has made raising Henry and Tessa coupled with her signing over custody to George last season is a misguided choice by this character; a new baby isn’t going to make everything right with how she views herself as a mother. Conversations about what a family or being a mother means is what makes this storyline worth it; pitting Libby and George against Bill and Virginia when it comes to how they view these factors.

Libby for one is furious with Virginia when she finds out she is pregnant and is so not hear for Bill’s badly told story that he has only just found out. She sits smoking in silence as he blathers on about how he didn’t notice and their marriage is as fucked as the TV he is trying to fix. Libby’s cream cable knit sweater and pants look (which I pointed out here) is as perfectly put together as she always is and for Libby appearances are what matter here. Even though she knows the baby isn’t Bill’s (thanks to her experiences conceiving his children), this will be the conclusion everyone else jumps to. After all they are actually sleeping together.

Masters of Sex 3.02 LibbyTilted head sympathy look is Libby’s nightmare scenario and for her the image of the ideal family is what she strives toward even if she is being torn apart inside. The new neighbor asking their son if she is a single parent is her ideal of hell, so people believing her husband has fathered Virginia’s baby is next level social suicide. Self-interest divides Virginia and Libby as their voices grow louder as they discuss what plan if any Virginia has. Virginia’s concern is with correcting her mistakes whereas Libby worries about reputation. There is no happy solution to this situation and this love triangle turns into four’s a crowd with the inclusion of baby daddy George.

George still loves Virginia and the idea of getting remarried will only work for him if Virginia is all in, but he can easily be swayed by money to go through with it for the sham. But he won’t be happy about it. One person who is thrilled by the marriage plan all is Libby and she sees this as a way to get Virginia out of her relationship; the looks shared by Bill and Virginia while vows are being said reveal Libby’s dream is not going to pan out. The way things seem on the outside often betray what is really going on and even when the two couples pose happily together after their spouses have been heralded inner conflict and turmoil will always trump fake smiles. For all this outward projection I have a feeling Libby is still popping those pills from last week.

Masters of Sex 3.02 Bill and LibbyIf you weren’t already aware that there are three people in both marriages then this episode really nails home that point with the B story. The Shah of Iran and his wife visit Bill and Virginia in an attempt to conceive as it is vital for the bloodline and throne that they have a child. Unfortunately his highness/your majesty has a low sperm count and conception has been an impossible task so far. Bill has his capping technique which has produced three of his own kids and after this fails he discovers the Princess has her own medical issue preventing her from ever getting pregnant.

At times the medical issue of the week is a little on the nose with how it acts as a mirror to the main action in the episode and this is certainly the case this week. And even though the whole three in a marriage talk is a little too neat for how it compares to Bill and Virginia’s situation it is still heartbreaking nonetheless. Tradition and duty can pull a person in a direction that isn’t what their heart wants for a number of reasons; in the case of the Princess who can’t get pregnant she knows her marriage is over even though this bond is one full of love. She can’t be the third person in the marriage (that Princess Diana interview springs to mind again) watching another woman raise a child with her ex even if she knows it all for pomp and ceremony.

Masters of Sex 3.02 Virginia and BillFor Bill and Virginia they can’t be together also because of circumstance and because of the still rather rigid temperament towards an unwed pregnant woman (and really I think even today the tabloids would have a field day with Virginia and Bill) the George plan is the only way Virginia can escape her temporary exile.

In Bill’s rather disastrous solo interview he gets tangled up as he tries to explain why sex is a physical urge in the same way as hunger and fatigue. This is the mid 60s and attitudes towards sex have moved on from when the show first started, but there are also morality based attitudes which remain the same and the work will be overshadowed if all anyone is looking at is Virginia’s bump questioning who the father is.

Masters of Sex 3.02 pregnant Virginia“We’ll see” is a well used phrase by any parent and it is one I have been on the receiving end multiple times and like Tessa I always saw this and the other go to answer of “maybe” as a yes, so while Tessa is an asshole in the car borrowing scene I also found myself empathizing with her. She doesn’t know that her mother has an abortion appointment and those Bob Dylan tickets as well as telling her friends she would have the car are the most important things to her in that moment. One reason why teen characters in adult dramas can irritate so much is because they are there as an obstacle and in my case it can sometimes feel all too real on occasions where they treat their parents like shit when their own self-interests are disrupted.

The time jump and sudden teen form Tessa takes has been hard to adjust to because she was this super sweet kid when we last saw her and so dealing with conflict and screaming is jarring. Showrunner Michelle Ashford addresses some of these concerns with The Hollywood Reporter and the credits disclaimer from the season premiere here and the vague comments about legal issues surrounding the kids has me more intrigued about what went down behind the scenes.

Virginia’s fears she will make the same mistakes with her children all over again and this is where tradition versus new ways of approaching motherhood come into play as Bill reassures her that maybe a working mother is not detrimental to raising children. Even when Masters of Sex stumbles there are scenes like this one which reinforce what makes the show work; when Bill and Virginia have these kinds of conversations the show sings. Much in the same way Bill does with his rendition of “Danny Boy” in an attempt to distract Virginia from painful contractions. She can be a good mother and work and the idea of a woman having it all is born! The last part is said in jest of course, but it is worth noting that Bill is told that he has it all “and I don’t have enough to stay” after he has informed the Princess there is no way she can conceive.

After several time jumps and another child added to the Masters and Johnson broods hopefully things will settle down in both of these areas as so far this has been a bumpy start to the season.

And finally a look at a fabulous and quite possibly Twiggy inspired outfit:

Masters of Sex 3.01 “Parliament of Owls” Costume Design Recap

13 Jul

The TV Ate My Wardrobe Masters of Sex coverage leans heavily towards costume design elements and as this first episode of the new season is also costume designer Ane Crabtree’s last episode on the show I want to focus on this aspect of this premiere. So there will be some plot discussion, but maybe not as much as previous reviews.

First thing to take note of is the time jump as season 2 ended in early 1961 and the very useful title card at the start of “Parliament of Owls” tells us it is now 1965. This means bigger hair, more pants and patterns. It isn’t a completely different change style wise with Libby still sticking to pastels and Virginia’s bow and button details remain intact (if not a little bigger in places) and the most notable difference is Virginia’s children who are now fully fledged teenagers (and different actors). The teens are used in this opening episode as a way to heighten conflict and so far they have proved to be pesky to both the adults and the audience. Think more Kim Bauer than Paige Jennings.

Masters of Sex 3.01 shoppingStarting with my favorite Virginia look from the episode in her oh so relaxed and chic combination of capri pants and a green shirt tied up in the middle signifying she is on vacation. Despite it being far from a chilled out break with so many different points of tension Virginia still manages to look the part in her sun hat and sunglasses. In fact you could wear this ensemble today and not look out of place.

A closer look at the pair:

Masters of Sex 3.01 sunglassesLibby on the other hand looks rigid and formal in her pale blue dress and while it is probably on trend for the time, the contrast between the two women and how comfortable they are in their skin is palpable.

Take Libby’s reaction when she sees Virginia hula dancing with Virginia’s daughter Jenny (Libby and Bill now have three children and the title card at the end informs us that everything about the kids is “entirely fictitious”).

Masters of sex 3.01 hula Masters of Sex 3.01 Libby watchingWhile Libby looks somewhat uptight here (although I love the gold belt detail) for their lakeside location, the outfit from the previous day is far more relaxed and shows just how much Virginia and Bill’s arrival has impacted her mental state.

Masters of Sex 3.01This reads as far more playful and vacation mom with her headscarf and gingham (which is so on point this season as Lizzy Caplan showed off on Jimmy Kimmel Live! recently). It is a very put together outfit and fits in with this whole ideal family that Libby is trying to maintain; the cracks are clear and even though she thinks it is best to put on a happy family front it is far more likely to be detrimental to the children.

Masters of Sex 3.01 Bill and VirginiaThere has always is a lot red, blue and white in Virginia’s wardrobe and she is killing it with her headscarf choice here which is the perfect accessory for a road trip in an MG convertible. Plus so many excellent side eye looks in Bill’s direction.

It is important to remember that even though there has been a significant time jump when it comes to personal style evolution it doesn’t tend to be all that dramatic when you are an adult, especially if you have found a look you are comfortable with and I would say Virginia has done just this.

Masters of Sex 3.01 Virginia sunglasses blue dressUnlike Libby, Virginia ditches her headscarf before she steps into her house and this dress is very much Virginia work attire.

Masters of Sex 3.01 Virginia and TessaLater on Virginia switches her work clothes for leisure ones, but there is room for more disdainful looks as her daughter Tessa pushes boundaries. But hey her blouse and pants are a good look.

Masters of Sex 3.01 Bill cardiganBill’s version of vacay dressing is removing his bow tie and putting on a chunky knit cardigan that Olivia Pope would drink a whole lot of wine in.

Masters of Sex 3.01 cardigans and convertiblesThe cardigan and Bill are one.

Masters of Sex 3.01 bedVirginia’s bedwear screams winter rather than a warm weekend at the lake and I wonder if she is trying to be as unalluring as possible because even when a secret affair is not as secret as you think, you probably don’t want to be hooking up when the wife and all of your kids are under the same roof. This is the most forward we have seen Libby about this whole setup and again they are wearing garments that play on how different they are with Libby being the surprisingly provocative one in this conversation.

They do share one thing in this bizarre friendship and that is Bill Masters; for some reason all I can think about is the Princess Diana interview where she talks about there being three people in her marriage.

Master of Sex 3.01 VirginiaThere is a time jump within a time jump in this episode as the narrative moves between the presentation Bill and Virginia are giving to the press and the time at the lake when they have received the first galleys of their book. Their book is released in 1966, which means another year looms on the horizon.

I would be remiss if I didn’t show this shot of Virginia getting ready, practicing her talking points and eating breakfast because it is a perfect showcase of the foundation garments which I discuss in detail over at Flavorwire.

Masters of Sex 3.01 bathroomA well put together lady suit and a bathroom revelation with Bill putting the unzipped skirt and Virginia’s throwing up together to equal pregnant. After all the talk of making sure her daughter doesn’t end up pregnant it is Virginia who ends up in the family way. Super awkward and a story development that I’m not sure how I feel about.

Masters of Sex 3.01 BettyAnd to end things on a bright note with Betty in glorious yellow and while she only made a brief appearance, this ensemble is the best of all things Betty; bold and straight to the point.

I’m looking forward to seeing Ane Crabtree’s work on the forthcoming HBO show Westworld and I am intrigued to see how Masters of Sex will progress now that both feet are firmly in the 1960s.

Work in Other Places: Talking Underwear on TV and the Best Shows of the Year (So Far)

9 Jul

Shameless self-promotion time and if you can’t shamelessly self-promote on your own website then I don’t know where you can.

Over at Flavorwire I had the pleasure of talking to costume designers from Masters of Sex (Ane Crabtree), The Americans (Jenny Gering) and You’re the Worst (Wendy Benbrook) about the importance of undergarments and how both period and contemporary costuming reflects on and can impact current trends.

Masters of Sex 2.03 Fight The Americans 2.06 You're the Worst 1.01Here is an extract and you read the whole thing here

The Americans is a bridge between period and contemporary fashion — the ’80s don’t feel so long ago — and it helps that The Americans‘ costuming isn’t what you might typically expect from this decade (lurid neons, shoulder pads). The show keeps a toe in the ’70s, and that’s reflected in Elizabeth’s everyday underwear choices.

While a visible bra strap might have been an extremely telling costuming choice even in The Americans‘ era, shows set in the present day are likely to use this detail far more casually. For sitcoms featuring young women —  Youre the Worst, Broad City, New Girl, Girls — warmer weather means, “What kind of bra can I wear with this?” dilemmas.”

And over at Complex I wrote about why The Americans is one of the “Best TV Shows of 2015 (So Far)” focusing on the complicated relationships at the heart of this Cold War era spy show: “Disguises, wigs and missions create tense and fraught moments, but the heart shattering action takes place in the most mundane of locations as these characters reveal who they actually are. In a world where secrets protect, the truth is a loaded weapon and The Americans is not afraid of pulling the trigger.”

Late Night Talk Show Round Up: A Return of “Really!?!” and Lizzy Caplan Talks Nudity on Masters of Sex

25 Jun

Just because Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler are no longer on Saturday Night Live it doesn’t mean the end for this pairing and when Poehler appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers they took this opportunity to both get behind his desk and fire off a much needed edition of “Really!?! with Seth and Amy.”

Amazing and much needed. Please make this a regular thing.

Also on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week Channing Tatum discussed some of his answers from his Reddit AMA and it is as glorious as the original thing (though no mention of Gilbert).

Not only did Lizzy Caplan explain why she is better than Jon Hamm on Jimmy Kimmel Live! which led to a whole WB discussion, but she also answered the nudity questions (thanks again to Caplan and Ruth Wilson for bringing the word ‘Showtits’ into my life) by pointing out all the real life connections as Jimmy’s ex Sarah Silverman is on the show. Silverman’s boyfriend Michael Sheen is Caplan’s co-lead and love interest on Masters of Sex. Oh, Hollywood you do delight me.

https://youtu.be/JFf96xOGws8

Now Lizzy Caplan might be better than Jon Hamm at keeping her job on the WB, but he sure can throw a gummy bear and look super handsome while doing so.

Variety Emmy Studio Conversations or Pick Your Dream Dinner Dates

16 Jun

You know the drill by now; it is Emmy discussion season and Variety has a whole host of conversations taking place between stars from your favorite shows. This series differs from roundtables because they are one on ones (and a two on two) with no moderator to ask the questions. What Variety delivers are the perfect bite size 10ish minute long chats focusing on the shows these actors are currently on as well as first jobs and other such general actor talking points. My list of dream dinner dates gets even longer with some of these pairings including the one below.

Allison Janney and Lizzy CaplanThis hug looks like the happiest place in the world.

Allison Janney and Lizzy Caplan light up the screen and they are of co-stars on Masters of Sex so the connection is already there. They discuss a range of topics including comedy in drama on Masters of Sex and finding laughter in the darkness on Mom. Caplan talks about her own personal experience with a storyline that devastated me last season and made this the second show that made me cry while writing a review (the first was The Good Wife and the recent third addition was Mad Men).

She also goes into some detail about how she wrote to the real Virginia Johnson before she passed away, which she never replied to and how Johnson “made it very clear that she didn’t want any involvement in it [Masters of Sex] whatsoever … I don’t think she read the script, it was more that she wrote this book, and that was her story, and then she wanted to just live out the rest of her life away from it all. Which I had to respect, but it drove me a bit crazy.”

Drama Actress Emmy Roundtable – “I Want to Play Everything I’ve Never Played Before” (Update! Watch the Full Video)

11 Jun

This is the one I have been waiting for and every year the drama actress roundtable is the highlight of The Hollywood Reporter’s Emmy series. It might be a premature declaration as there are still more discussions to come as part of this season, but I am pretty confident in this assertion after reading the transcript and watching the clips which have been made available prior to SundanceTV airing it in full come August (Update – you can now watch the full discussion at the end of this post). I do want to point to the comedy actress chat as another enlightening and fascinating entry into the roundtable Hall of Fame. And now there is another group to add to my boozy lunch wish list.

The line-up is entirely different to last year (sometimes there are repeats) with Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Honourable Woman), Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Jessica Lange (American Horror Story), Ruth Wilson (The Affair) and Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex). Gone are the questions of ‘how do you balance work and family?’ and instead there is a strong focus on their work from the shows they are currently on to past experiences. There are four Oscar nominees among these women (some multiple) and a two time winner showing the caliber of talent television attracts particularly when it comes to complex roles for women. A mixture of cable and network with ages ranging from 32 to 66 shows how well television caters to a range of experiences.

THRAs the cover so boldly states there is a focus on race, sex, age and nudity with the latter coming up on multiple occasions. Lizzy Caplan and Ruth Wilson joke about the name of their network – “Showtits” – and sex plays a big part in both Masters of Sex (it is in the title after all) and The Affair. Sex isn’t just there for sensationalism or to be gratuitous; it is worth noting that both shows have a female showrunner with Caplan going so far as pointing out that Michelle Ashford is kinda prudish and those scenes can be hard for all involved.

How to Get Away with Murder is Viola Davis’ first starring role on prime time and she talks about her initial concerns when she took the project on including her appearance. There is one point which really sticks with me and is worth quoting in full exemplifying why this roundtable series strikes a chord:

“I’ve been doing this for 27 years. I’ve performed in basements, churches, off-Broadway. I want the work to reflect my level of gifts and talent. I don’t want it to reflect my color, my sex or my age. That’s what I want most.”

The comedy actresses talked about bad auditions and incidents earlier in their careers where they maybe tried to adjust their look for an audition. This is something Maggie Gyllenhaal discusses in terms of her appearance and how she has been judged in the past in terms of being ‘sexy.’ Gyllenhaal also mentions her interest in nudity and what she looks for in a sex scene.

Cookie Lyon has made such a huge impact on the TV landscape this season and Taraji P. Henson jokes “I hate that bitch. She’s stolen my identity! My friends don’t want to talk to me unless it’s about Cookie.” I’m only halfway through Empire but within the first few minutes of seeing this character on screen it was love. Henson also reveals who she sometimes channels when she is playing Cookie and the answer is not who you might expect. There are no boundaries when it comes to want roles Henson wants to play “I want to play a superhero. I want to be a Bond girl. I want to play a man. I want to play a white woman. I want to play everything I’ve never played before.”

There are more clips to watch here before the full thing becomes available in August.

THR drama actress roundtableIn terms of the styling of the group it turns out I wasn’t proved wrong after all with an explosion of sparkle and while Ruth Wilson is the lone person in print (a beautiful Erdem frock), there is some color with Viola Davis’ Lanvin and range of styles suiting the wearer in question. Lizzy Caplan’s Donna Karan ensemble is reminiscent of her Donna Karan Atelier Emmy stunner from last year (Caplan also chose this designer when she wowed at the Met Gala last month). During the chat Caplan wears an oversized tuxedo jacket and looks super cool while doing so. Excellent lipstick game from all the ladies with Caplan’s fuchsia reminding me of my new favorite lip color. And now if you will excuse me I will be drawing hearts around this entire conversation.

Check back for more Emmy related discussions in the weeks/months to come.

Masters of Sex Season 3 Artwork and Previews: “We are the Sexual Revolution”

9 Jun

We have spent a lot of time with Bill Masters and Virginia Johnson on Masters of Sex as they conduct their study, but what happens when their work is released on a wide scale? This is what season 3 will be exploring as the show jumps forward to the mid sixties (season 2 ended in January 1961) including a lot of negative reactions from the general public to their controversial work.

The professional and private relationships are just as complementary and contradictory as they have ever been and the marriage between Libby and Bill still reads as fraught. The idea of their being three in this marriage is heightened in both the poster and preview with Libby going so far as kissing Virginia to see what it is like.

Masters of Sex S3Previous artwork has focused solely on Bill and Virginia so Libby inclusion here is significant and they’ve moved away from the buttoned up look of season 1 and the undressed nature of last year’s shots to this fun game of Twister coupled with a Beatles song that doubles a sex pun. Yes I giggled. The interesting thing about this poster is Libby’s position; as while she is featured she is very much off to the side and wearing neutral tones. The bold pink of the dot matches Bill’s undone bow tie (suggesting he has maybe relaxed a little), Virginia’s lipstick and the stitching on her button holes – those giant buttons are A+ and I hope she wears this dress on the show – which unites these two characters.

The costume design on Masters of Sex provides plenty of discourse here at TV Ate My Wardrobe and I am already clapping my hands with glee at this time jump. This is why I present to you shots of costumes that I cannot wait to see in the context of an episode.

IMG_0803Patterned scarf! And you know, more buttons.

IMG_0806So here for Libby’s cream cable knit and pants look. She’s also perfected the whole quiet seething while smoking thing.

IMG_0807Betty has always been the pattern queen so mid sixties fashion is going to be ideal for her.

IMG_0808I also have strong feelings about this yellow outfit.

Watch the promo and a behind the scenes preview below to get a glimpse of what season 3 has to offer. Oh hey Josh Charles! Or should I call you the Perfume King?

Masters of Sex returns Sunday, July 12.

Behind the Insta Scenes: Photos from the Set

6 May

A bumper TV Instagram round-up starting off with some Met Gala behind the scenes (and the no selfie rule was definitely ignored across the board) followed by the usual onset shenanigans.

Diane Kruger is one of TV Ate My Wardrobe’s favorite Instagrammers and she doesn’t scrimp on the getting ready photos for this event. Also taking note of all the makeup products scattered across the table (with a random appearance from a landline phone). Not surprising in the least to see so many Chanel products.

This is a beautiful dreamlike shot of Kerry Washington’s pink Prada and as I mentioned in the red carpet rundown this gown is stunning from certain angles.

Selfie ban be damned.

Adorable couple alert part one! Plus a closer look at Keri Russell’s Altuzarra feathered frock. I bet the detail on this dress looks amazing in real life.

Adorable couple alert part two; both of these photos capture moments of laughter from actors we are used to seeing with more tormented expressions. I like it a lot.

This is also very cute from Vanessa Hudgens and her furry friend.

Somehow the Inside Amy Schumer parody of 12 Angry Men was even better than the crazy high expectations I had as they debated Amy’s fuckability and whether she is hot enough to be on TV. This episode skewered all those many conversations we have heard about Lena Dunham and so many other women (including Schumer); what an excellent group of dudes Schumer lined up to take on this episode long sketch.

The cast from your new favorite show, which isn’t actually real. Or, and this is speculation, a photo shoot for TV awards season focusing on supporting actors.

Emilia Clarke joined Instagram recently and she seems very taken by Kristin Wiig’s interpretation of Daenerys on The Tonight Show.

On Orphan Black they take ‘Star Wars Day’ seriously. And Tatiana Maslany proves once again that she can play anyone.

https://instagram.com/p/2JFuAzOqeg/?taken-by=jennyslate

New Jenny Slate and Ari Graynor show feels forever. Also Slate’s ship dress is excellent, as is her squat pose.

https://instagram.com/p/2JVdeEgkcA/?taken-by=allthenewsthatsfitztoprint

Another sneak look at Masters of Sex season 3 courtesy of Caitlin Fitzgerald. Yes I am very excited about the Josh Charles casting news.

https://instagram.com/p/2L1tPPnqj4/?taken-by=maisie_williams

Maisie Williams has been shooting Doctor Who this week so I am going to assume this excellent mess of curls and volume is courtesy of this.

https://instagram.com/p/2NOrUBnexV/?taken-by=ijessewilliams

Huh, Grey’s Anatomy shoots on a Saturday night.

Girls is going to Coney Island and a turtleneck paired with dungarees seems rather un-Jessa like so I am looking forward to seeing what character evolution leads to this costuming. Maybe it is part of her therapist look. Question of the Day – would you prefer your therapist was Betty Draper or Jessa?

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

22 Apr

TV Instagram round-up time with clones aplenty, a glimpse at what Coachella would have been like in the days of The WB, show crossover ideas, tees to covet and what goes on between takes on Mad Men.

Spot the real Tatiana Maslany and Orphan Black season 3 opens with a clone filled scene requiring a whole lot of time and several clone doubles. Extra points for whoever uploaded this picture for using tilt shift giving it a dreamy aura much like the scene itself.

More Mad Men treats from new Instagram favorite Elisabeth Moss and an intense looking game of giant Jenga. Not as intense as the scene in this week’s episode which led to Peggy’s inclusion in this picture parade.

https://instagram.com/p/1rggeeQPnB/?taken-by=busyphilipps

Coachella Part Two delivers on the photo front thanks to Busy Philipps and a WB reunion. A whole lot of good white tee action going on here.

https://instagram.com/p/1oSSm4QPlO/?taken-by=busyphilipps

Busy Philipps knows what the people want delivering a Scott Speedman photo shoot and while I am partial to the ‘Shy Speedman’ I think “Smiley Speedman” is my true weakness.

Laverne Cox looks stunning as does Julia Garner, although I can’t help but get a little nervous at the sight of Garner and if Kimmy will make an appearance on tonight’s season finale of The Americans.

https://instagram.com/p/1uTEaruqcu/?taken-by=jennyslate

Jenny Slate is super cute while showing off this amazing Wayne’s World Clashist tee while reigniting the hair envy I get while watching Obvious Child.

https://instagram.com/p/1g0gr1AkaR/?taken-by=allthenewsthatsfitztoprint

Caitlin Fitzgerald gets back into the Masters of Sex swing of things and the checks are very on point for 2015 as well as the 1960s. Nice emoji usage summing up maybe where this year will take Libby Masters.

Patterns aplenty on The Today Show as shows collide with Gina Rodriguez and Taryn Manning. While Diane Guerrero is already on both Jane the Virgin and Orange is the New Black I could definitely see some of the other ladies on Jane ending up in Litchfield. Or some of the ladies heading to the Marbella when they get released from prison.

Playing House returns Tuesday, August 4 and in the meantime you can stock up on plenty of Jammer merch, some of it as modeled by the shows stars Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair. I am very excited to have these ladies back in my life.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

8 Apr

Mad Men returned this week and one of its stars joined Instagram; so far Elisabeth Moss is killing it with the set photos, costume peaks and cat pictures. Plus more Masters of Sex season 3 costume hints and a new furry addition to the Girls set.

One of my favorite Peggy costumes (from “The Flood”) and a break from the dreaded pantyhose. I have definitely worn a variation of this outfit. Probably not with those shoes.

Random Mad Men hookup reveal. Or rather a preview of their appearance on Watch What Happens Live. Elisabeth Moss prepared for this interview in the best way she could – by watching Real Housewives. Have I mentioned how much I adore her?!

January Jones is still the undisputed Instagram hashtag queen and her co-star has far to go to reach these heights. This includes Jones’ Easter post in a very on point Betty frock from her Coca-Cola audition back in season 1.

Carrie Bradshaw wasn’t too hot on technology particularly phones and SJP has similar feelings; getting lightly teased by an off camera Kerry Washington as part of their Glamour cover behind the scenes.

The cast of Orphan Black (minus the clones) at WonderCon doing the mass selfie thing and we are only a couple of weeks away from season 3!

As with Peggy, I love seeing Virginia in pants on Masters of Sex and as there’s going to be a time jump I’m really looking forward to seeing how this impacts Virginia’s costuming. These sneak peeks are fantastic.

https://instagram.com/p/0-uV9XgkR1/?taken-by=allthenewsthatsfitztoprint

A slightly different look for this Masters of Sex trio.

My first question when I saw this photo was whether this is a new addition to the Girls cast as a puppy would sure be a step up from Desi for Marni. It turns out this is Moxie, Allison Williams’ new pup and so sadly I don’t think we will be seeing this cutie onscreen.

TV show magic and a less disruptive option than using the real thing. Those are some very un-Sherlock clothes there on Jonny Lee Miller.
