Gilmore Girls 1.09 Emily and LorelaiEmma: We’re covering 5 episodes this time and A LOT goes down in this run and both Lorelai and Rory are in the early spells of their relationships. Rory is experiencing lots of firsts with Dean and Lorelai is also on the first time thing in that this is the first relationship that is directly impacting her Rory bubble. It’s something we’ve mentioned before but we’ve come into the Gilmore lives at this huge transitional moment when it is no longer just Rory and Lorelai and this means plenty of mistakes will be made and shit will go down. And go down it does.

This is a really good selection of episodes as we’re not of the introductory phase and fully into the Stars Hollow world. In fact they did a very good job of introducing the characters and place without it ever feeling forced, but there is always that initial finding of feet in both the writing and acting and we are definitely passed that.

Prior to this bunch my episode highlight was Rory’s Birthdays and this was also the one that gave me the most emotional response. I wondered if that had anything to do with having my tooth pulled impacting my reaction and thanks to Rory’s Dance I can categorically say that nope this had nothing to do with. Another occasion of the Gilmore ladies fighting and other occasion that made me sob. Now I’m thinking any episode with Rory’s name in the title will make me cry. A theory to be tested.

The relationship dynamic between these three women is fascinating and with each moment that Emily and Lorelai break down the walls of their past something then happens to erect them again. This time Emily gets to perform some very maternal duties like taking care of her sick daughter or rather injured daughter as Lorelai has hurt her back after an incident while making Rory’s dress. There’s still plenty of snark and answering back, but also a level of understanding/compassion that we haven’t really witnessed before. That is until Rory accidentally pulls a move from Lorelai’s teenage years with her own Rory twist (falling asleep while reading).

So much has probably been said in heated moments between Lorelai and her mother that mirrors this momentum, but this feels like the first time it has got this personal in a long time. It all comes back to Lorelai’s teen pregnancy and there’s a deep feeling of betrayal on both sides. For Emily it is these years left out in the wilderness with the holidays standing in for the only family time and Lorelai has years of feeling rejected and not good enough to fill many more arguments like this.

Where this one differs to the last blow-up is that Rory also lets her mother have it and we’ve seen Rory and Lorelai fight before but never like this. And even reading back my notes from this scene has got me a little teary. So good job guys.

What did you make of this argument?Gilmore Girls 1.09 gilmore ladiesJulie: This is the thing that I love most about Gilmore Girls (and, hi, I love it so much that I’m already on Season 5): the relationships. Every conversation, every interaction, is layered with the past. It’s not like The Walking Dead or something where no one ever remembers anything that happened the week before. Lorelai remembers her past and so does Emily. And you have to feel for both of them. I understand Lorelai’s point that her parents weren’t there for her the way she needed them to be. I get that with Emily there’s always something calculating below the surface. But she’s been hurt by Lorelai as well. She’s not a straight-up villain, by any stretch.

Lorelai has always been “the cool mom,” but in a good way. I think she definitely ended up with a good kid, so she’s got that going for her. Rory is a saint, basically. I’m not sure how much of that is nature vs. nurture. There is a lot of Richard (i.e. levelheadedness) in the girl, even if she didn’t grow up close to her grandfather. As Rory gets older, Lorelai is going to have to start dealing with the kinds of things that drove her apart from her own mother. It’s one thing to seem to be cool with everything. It’s another thing all together to actually be cool with it.

I love/cringed at the conversation between Lorelai and Dean while watching the movie. She is completely right that the town is watching his and Rory’s relationship, and good for Dean for standing up to her. Bad for Dean for keeping Rory out all night, even accidentally.

I was so glad that they didn’t brush the overnight in Miss Patty’s under the rug. Everything on this show has a ripple effect, and in this case it was that it brought up some old feelings about Lorelai’s teen years. I figured Lorelai would be pissed at Rory for staying out late, but the reasons why she was upset were so much more nuanced. There are a million layers to everything — on the base level, she was simply worried about her daughter’s whereabouts; then she was worrying about what she might be doing, which had to have brought back flashbacks to what she herself was doing at that age (worrying about history repeating itself and all that); and, in a somewhat childlike way, it made her mad that Rory got her in trouble with Emily.

So that kind of covers the ladies. What did you think of the romantic interests in these episodes?Gilmore Girls 1.09 Rory and LukeEmma: It’s fun seeing things that were clearly just Rory and Lorelai activities evolving into their expanding circle. So movie night becomes a weird not quite a date night and like you I cringed/adored Lorelai’s chat with Dean. I’m impressed that he didn’t bail after this as it would be enough to scare off a suitor who isn’t all in. He stands up to Lorelai and he agrees to go to the Chilton dance even though he has to wear a suit and doesn’t really like to dance. He’s pretty great at the moment and yet I’m only lukewarm toward him and Rory.

I wonder if I’d seen this when it was on if my opinion would differ and if I’d find him and his quintessential teen boy hair super dreamy, but he’s maybe a little too perfect. There’s not much heat and they certainly have cute flirty banter, but it is too early in the game to call him the one. He is certainly no Ben Covington/Pacey Witter/Jordan Catalano.

He handles Chilton well including Paris’ minions who are instantly nicer to Rory when they see her cute (and tall) date. Well one of them tries to come onto him, but that’s as nice as she’s been so far. Somehow Dean doesn’t punch Tristan even though Tristan provokes him in a way where you could easily justify a mid dance brawl. Good restraint there. Dean is of course a far superior choice to old squinty eyes Tristan. And then there’s the falling asleep moment giving cause for town wide gossip and he still wants to be Rory’s boyfriend. How do you feel about Dean?

Now last time I was also not all that crazy about Max I found him a bit too slick and he’s still got that in him, but they do have nice chemistry even if there are MANY obstacles in their way. First comes Lane as she’s been hanging out in an empty Gilmore house after her accidental and very public hair stroking. Then there’s the rules that Lorelai set up long ago where her boyfriends and Rory are in very separate boxes but Max is already in Rory’s life as her teacher and so this all gets messed up and then there’s the breakup turned kiss which ends up in a ‘taking a break’ sitch after Paris tells the whole school that Rory’s mom kissed a teacher. Lots of complicated emotions with this one.Gilmore Girls 1.09 Rory green sweaterJulie: I am definitely with you on Dean. He’s cute and sweet, but he’s way too perfect. He’s more Noel than Ben, but I think he and Rory have less chemistry than Felicity and Noel did. Noel and Felicity’s first and second kisses are two of the best kisses in all of television. Maybe it’s because they get together so early, but I was never invested in Rory kissing Dean, except for me being all “Yay, Rory, get some.”

Then the fact that it’s Dean vs. Tristan at the school dance is even more whatever because neither Jared Padalecki nor CMM do it for me, hotness-wise.

Now, hotness-wise, Max Medina does do it for me. That’s how I know I’m old. I’m waaaaay more interested in Lorelai’s suitors, which is probably appropriate and I should be proud of myself. The one thing I will say about how the show handles Lorelai’s loves is a little scatterbrained. We don’t always get to *see* Lorelai fall for the guy (you’ll see this later–one minute she’s interested in one guy, the next minute she’s OBVIOUSLY been thinking about another, who comes out of nowhere–It’s hard to explain). Like, she and Max have a nice time together at the coffee shop, she plays it cool, and then she’s obsessing over her answering machine. I figure it’s because she’s so cool and guarded and the only person she’ll allow herself to get goofy with is Rory.

But, yeah. The whole thing with Max is doomed to fail anyway. Who else are you loving in Stars Hollow right now?Gilmore Girls 1.10 Lorelai, Luke and EmilyEmma: There’s another Lorelai love interest we haven’t mentioned yet this week and he’s a character who is becoming much more than a source of grumpiness. Although his grumpy is also pretty fun. Luke as we’ve mentioned before is clearly end game for Lorelai and right now I think the feelings are much stronger on Luke’s part.

We’re also learning some stuff about Luke beyond how much he hates town cheer, Sookie behind his counter and cell phones in his diner. For one we get to find out about his dad and that his diner used to be his shop. His death clearly hit him hard and it means he’s a really good source of comfort for Lorelai when her dad has his health scare.

I also really enjoy their many back and forths; their chemistry is really great and I’m looking forward to when it happens. Hopefully their first kiss is more Noel/Felicity than Rory/Dean.

And I think you’re right about the Lorelai romance scattiness. She definitely guards her heart and her space with Rory in equal measure and I think what happened with Rory’s dad when she was younger had a lasting impact and it’s like she’s scared to fall for someone like that again.

What did you make of Rory keeping those photos of her mom and dad as love’s young dream? I’m sensing we might be meeting him soon or at least this is something that will come up in the near future.

While we’re on the subject of love – the stuff with Emily and Richard at the hospital crushed me in part because it was so well acted and also the double meaning when Emily tells Richard he can’t go first as real life circumstances means the Gilmore Girls revival is going to be Richard-less and that’s all kinds of heartbreaking.Gilmore Girls 1.07 rory, Luke and LorelaiJulie: And there’s the part where Lorelai sees Dean for the first time and says he looks like Christopher. She has to be going through so many emotions with her sixteen-year-old daughter now dating a guy who reminds her of the dude who knocked her up (and who hasn’t been around). There has to be a whole lot of worry about the uncertainty of what may come.

At least Lorelai does have some good friends around to keep her going. Luke is someone whom I like more and more the better I get to know him. He is just as guarded as Lorelai, in his own way; but even if they’re lacking in the romance department, he is such a good friend to her. And Sookie is delightful, if a little manic.

The scene with Lorelai’s parents in the hospital did choke me up, especially knowing that Richard won’t be around for the reboot. I love that this show doesn’t short change the “adult” relationships either.

What did you think of the fashion in these eps? Rory’s dance dress is so pretty and she looked really cute in it.

Gilmore Girls 1.09Emma: Sookie is definitely still a little on the too much side for me, but I do like her relationship with Sookie and her burgeoning romance with Jackson even if I want to burn his denim dungarees. That is not a good look, dude.

I love the dress Lorelai made Rory and it is the kind of style that is pretty timeless. I also loved that she originally paired it with boots and stuffed a tea towel down the front while she was eating. This is the aesthetic I am going for when it comes to my wedding. Also it says a lot that I have picked out what flats I will be wearing for the evening/dancing portion of my wedding before any other item of clothing. Priorities.

The reaction to her dress was also great with Emily thinking Lorelai had ditched the homemade idea and Paris’ minions giving her praises. I especially enjoyed the one (names I have not remembered yet) who was trying to think of anything her own mother had made and only coming up with some really disgusting soup.

Currently I am obsessed with Lorelai’s iridescent blue eye shadow, which I’m pretty sure she has worn in every episode and is giving me all the flashbacks to bad 00s makeup. I had a similar color that I wore a lot that came in a squeezy tube by Clinque. I also had it in iridescent purple and that was also bad in retrospect. This gets added to my list of terrible fashion/beauty things from the aughts. See also Lorelai’s leather jacket. Leather jackets were very bad back then. Chokers continue to be a thing and once again I want to ask why? Oh but Rory does have a mighty fine selection of sweaters that Felicity would definitely be impressed by.Gilmore Girls 1.09 LorelaiThe Paris/Rory relationship also continues to flit between animosity and some kind of sympathy putting them fully into frenemy territory. Paris continues to like Tristan – again with the why? – and she suffers not one but two moments of social suicide. First she outs her own date as her cousin that her mom paid and second there’s a whole lot of gossip about her parents’ divorce. And yet she retains her status as Queen Bee thanks to Lorelai smooching Max at school. Rory doesn’t let this go and confronts Paris about her asshole behavior. This is one of my favorite things about Rory; she always calls Paris out on her shit.

How do you feel about the Rory/Paris stuff?Gilmore Girls 1.07 Rory and LorelaiJulie: Eating and dancing are the most important parts of a wedding! Comfort is key, and I think you should definitely take your dress cues from Rory Gilmore.

Yes, Lorelai’s leather jackets are problematic. But girl can really rock a pair of low-rise, boot-cut jeans. She almost–almost–has me thinking those should make a comeback (are they yet?). I did a lot of eyeshadow colors back in the day, but blue was never one I could pull off. I’ve still managed to convince myself that purple eyeshadow works on me. No one has told me otherwise, and I plan on carrying that look into my “old broad” days.

Paris is kind of an amazing character. She’s frustrating (and I, too, don’t get the Tristan thing), but she and Rory challenge each other, which is good. Things tend to come easy for both girls, school-wise, so I like that they’ve become each other’s rival. I’m not sure Paris is actually queen bee. I’m guessing that all of these kids have gone to school with her forever, and her antics basically no longer register with them. They just let Paris be Paris. Rory, who’s new, actually deals with, listens to, and challenges Paris. It’s an interesting relationship, especially because Rory’s friendship with Lane seems so solid and drama-free.Gilmore Girls 1.11 Paris and RoryJulie Hammerle is, according to Klout, an expert in the areas of both Morgan Freeman and glasses. Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

2 Mar

A mix of Oscars getting ready/parties/day after action with the usual TV set action plus a dash of Broadway in this week’s Instagram highlights.

Nothing made happier about Oscar night than the Alias reunion that took place at the Vanity Fair party. So thank you Victor Garber’s husband Rainer Andreesen for taking this photo and releasing it to the world.

One more because feelings.

What breakfast looks like on the morning of the Oscars. Always avocado on toast and some all important bacon.

And what dinner looks like after winning an Oscar. The Converse change makes Brie a girl after my own heart (I have a mystery huge bruise on my ankle which I’m putting down to wearing heels for the first time in 6 months).

In other pre-Oscars prep Sophie Turner opts for this simple tea with lemon and her invite shot.

Jacob Tremblay continues his adorable reign with these past and present shots with Sofia Vergara and super charming caption to boot. At the Oscars and after parties he got to hang out with several more Star Wars stars. Also adorable.

Chrissy Teigen was one of our Oscar best dressed and here is another view of her dress as she gets sewn into thing (and once again the bathroom question springs to mind).

A really good ad for Neutrogena as both Kerry Washington and Jennifer Garner look amazing (and are both on our best dressed list). Excellent on brand synergy here.

Just like us Oscars edition.

Moving on from the Oscars and Yael Grobglas is serving up excellent OOTD in a 70s inspired look. Plus yes it always does help having Rogelio behind you.

A blood covered Walking Dead cast looking a whole lot happier in this video than we are used to seeing them. It’s nice to see so many smiles.

Why it can be bad to nap on the job.

We’ve had Oscars getting dressed behind the scenes and now for a costuming one with Chloe Bennet getting help with her zip on Agents of SHIELD.

Max Greenfield’s hair is as high as it is wonderful. It might help that fellow passenger Bia Iftikhar is an award winning hair stylist.

A super busy time for Saoirse Ronan with award season and Crucible rehearsals with previews starting Monday. So the day after the Oscars. That really is no break for Ronan. Tavi Gevinson captures the group recording and after reading Stacy Schiff’s The Witches last month I really want to check back in with The Crucible as I haven’t read it since high school.

Best of the 2016 Oscars Red Carpet: Black, White and Block Color

29 Feb

Welcome to more Oscar red carpet highlights and part 2 is all about classic black frocks with a twist and we’ve got leather, cute couples, Darth Vader socks and more.

For part 1 of our red carpet rundown head here.Jennifer GarnerA big weekend for Jennifer Garner and after that killer Vanity Fair profile (which I have definitely read more than once) she made a fabulous dress choice with Atelier Versace that reads “Don’t worry about me, I’m fine (and not in a way where I’m not actually fine).”

I have a lot of love for Garner and all I want is for a TV project to come along that is worthy of her talents and if she gets to use some of her Sydney Bristow skills then I am down for that.Julianne MooreJulianne Moore wears the ideal presenting gown in Chanel; simple and stunning. I think I might actually like it better than the Chanel she wore last year when she won.Mark RuffaloThe couple that wears Valentino together stays together. Mark Ruffalo’s custom tuxedo has him standing out in blue and wife Sunrise Coigney’s Valentino Couture gown is the magical sheer unicorn in that I actually really like.Michael Sheen and Sarah SilvermanI don’t have a whole lot to say about their outfits as they’ve both gone for solid classic looks, but I just really like them as a couple so here are Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen in their fancy threads. Kerry WashingtonA dress that looks better in motion and I am so here for a bit of leather on the Oscar red carpet; the bodice of Kerry Washington’s Versace frock is giving off great edge. My one issue is the giant slit and the Jolie posing as it really detracts from the rest of the gown. Washington is someone you can count on to pull out the big guns at an event like this and I can’t fault her bold choices when the overall outlook of the general red carpet is a little on the underwhelming side.Mindy KalingAnother dress with a caveat as Mindy Kaling’s Elizabeth Kennedy served up all the drama from the back and fell a bit flat from the front. This bow train is everything as are Kaling’s super stacked heels. That is a lot of inches.Brie LarsonAs with Alicia Vikander, Brie Larson was on the highly anticipated list and while there is a lot to love about this Gucci gown it doesn’t quite have the impact of her Golden Globes gold Calvin Klein or the Chanel she wore to the Independent Spirit Awards.

The color is fantastic and the combination of ruffles/pleats is definitely working for me, but it is lacking something. Regardless I am very happy Brie won and she delivered another fantastic speech.Cate BlanchettMy favorite thing about Cate Blanchett on the red carpet is you never know what you’re going to get, but you know it will be amazing. Amazing it is with Blanchett going fairy tale this year in floral Armani Privé.Tina FeyIn the battle of the strapless purple gowns Tina Fey is triumphant in Atelier Versace over Reese Witherspoon’s Oscar de la Renta similar choice. I guess it’s kinda awkward when something like this happens, but I also think this is a Tina Fey Top 5 red carpet moment.Rachel McAdamsAnother in the category of dresses that look better from a different angle and Rachel McAdams suffered in the crease department. However I love this shot which captures the drama of the emerald green August Getty Atelier dress.Jacob TremblayEnding things with the little dude of the hour and the suit is custom Armani, but it is the Darth Vader socks that are the most important accessory here.

Best of the 2016 Oscars Red Carpet: Sparkle and Pattern

29 Feb

Welcome to the final hurrah of awards season (well there are also still Vanity Fair after party photos to deal with) and after months of campaigning and many other red carpets the Oscars are here. Now I’m not going to say I was totally disappointed, underwhelmed perhaps as overall the Golden Globes and maybe even the SAGs had more standout dress moments. There was a lot to love this year, but not a whole lot that had that Oscar WOAH. No contenders to the Michelle Williams in yellow Vera Wang from 10 years ago.

There are still plenty of dresses to peruse and welcome to part 1 of our highlights – kicking off with all the sparkly delights.Saoirse RonanSaoirse Ronan delivered the first WOW reaction of the night in emerald Calvin Klein Collection and it is giving me Keira Knightley Atonement dress feelings with a 1970s sequin twist. That is a very good thing.Naomi Watts and Liev SchreiberMore sequins and a gown that looks just as stunning in motion as it does in these posed photos; Naomi Watts is onto a winner in Armani Privé and Liev Schreiber is doing the classic tux thing (for dudes in exciting suits check out the style highlights from the Independent Spirit Awards).Margot RobbiePlunging gold snakeskin for Margot Robbie and this is another dress that is giving off so many 1970s vibes and in not so shocking news I am very much here for this decade’s strong influence.Sandy PowellSound the #LadySuitWatch2016 klaxon and costume designer Sandy Powell (no E! this is not Tilda) does not disappoint in a year when she has been nominated not once, but twice (for Carol and Cinderella – see photos from a Cinderella exhibit here). Amy PoehlerWhen I first saw Amy Poehler in Andrew Gn I snap judgement declared this my favorite ever red carpet look for her and the morning after I still feel the same. Love the embroidery and the drama. Plus a caped sleeve is always going to hit my sweet spot.Alicia VikanderIt has been a season of big hitters for the always fashion forward and adventurous Alicia Vikander so I was a little disappointed with what Louis Vuitton made for her very big night. Don’t get me wrong it is a lovely gown (bubble hem aside), but it’s not the triumphant levels we saw at the SAGs. I feel greedy for wanting more.

I am glad she won (even if it should have been for Ex-Machina) and I’m really looking forward to seeing what she does both on screen and on the red carpet in the not too distant future. Shout-out to the woman in silver sequins in the background as she looks fabulous.Daisy RidleyAnother recent red carpet big hitter and Daisy Ridley crushed the Star Wars press tour on every level. Chanel Couture is a great step although I am not in love with the sheer trim, but Ridley is certainly working the awkward length and gets those all important lipstick points. John Legend and Chrissy TeiganChrissy Teigen posted a photo on Instagram of final Oscar prep which included getting sewn into her dress – standard fancy gown procedure which always has me wondering about trips to the bathroom – and she looks incredible in rose embroidered Marchesa. John Legend as always scrubs up very well.Juliet RylanceAnother incredible embroidered creation and Juliet Rylance’s Temperley London frock gives off a very fresh vibe. Rylance was there with her father Mark Rylance and his Best Supporting Actor speech was one of my favorites from the night. Such grace and humility. Plus that wonderful accent. Now I am also wondering whether we will get any more of The Knick as I have so many hopes for Cornelia.

Stay tuned for part 2 of our Oscar coverage.

Best of the 2016 Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet: Dudes in Suits and Couples

28 Feb

Now for the guys and the Independent Spirit Awards delivers on more than just your average black tuxedo with a variety of suit styles and colors. Plus we’ve got some very well dressed couples.

For a look at the many amazing bold and patterned dress plus a new #LadySuitWatch2016 entry head here.Kumail NanjianiAs co-host, Kumail Nanjiani has gone the mostly traditional route, but switches out black for navy and looks dapper as fuck.Jacob TremblayIf you’d told me 6 months ago that a 9-year-old boy would be one of the best dressed stars of this season I would have probably scoffed at the notion. Cue present day and Jacob Tremblay has been showing all the adults how it is done; from sports jackets to tuxedos and now he is nailing the colored suit/bold tie combo.Abrahamm Atta and Cary FukanagaAbraham Attah is also crushing it when it comes to sartorial choices of younger dudes and the 15-year-old Beasts of No Nation star and Best Actor winner delivers in the polka dot bow tie and cool suit department. Oh hey there Cary Fukunaga! Working the lighter suit/dark shirt styling with aplomb. I do miss his glasses/longer hair.Idris ElbaThe hat isn’t completely detracting from all the wonderful things about Idris Elba’s ensemble, but it certainly isn’t doing it any favors. Gonna give him a pass though because he is Idris.

Rami MalekRami Malek continues to kill it on every red (or blue) carpet and this burgundy Calvin Klein suit is multiple heart eye/flames/100 emoji levels of amazing. Shout out to stylist Ilaria Urbinati for the amazing suits she picks for him.Mark Duplass and Katie AseltonA couple of couples and Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton are regular Independent Spirit Awards attendees and they have the whole super cool aesthetic down. Also very much into Duplass’ salt and pepper beard.Zoe Kazan and Paul DanoLast month Zoe Kazan gave an interesting insight into the whole award season process and gave high praise to the talented stylists who give us so much to talk about during this fashion heavy time. Leith Clark has picked out another fantastic dress that is giving me 1960s wedding vibes and as this is the final event on Paul Dano’s nomination calendar this season it makes sense to go out with a super cute bang. Excellent suit choice for Dano too.

Best of the 2016 Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet: The Ladies

28 Feb

Happy Oscars Day! What better way to kick off this red carpet extravaganza than with a rundown of the many amazing looks from one of the highlights in this super stacked award season.

The Independent Spirit Awards take place in a marquee on the beach in Santa Monica and so it has a very different vibe to what we will be seeing later today. Bold color and print reign supreme with a more chilled out aesthetic; here are our favorite looks from the ladies yesterday.Brie LarsonBrie Larson has been crushing it all year and this intricately beaded Chanel number is a contender for ultimate best (with her Golden Globes dress as a close second). Another win for Larson – her speech is definitely worth a watch – and it is likely that she will be adding another to her awards shelf this evening. As I mentioned on Friday, Larson is on my highly anticipated Oscar dress list.Cate BlanchettThird year in a row for Cate Blanchett at the Independent Spirit Awards (nominee in 2014 and presenter in 2015) and another triumphant frock choice. The Spring ’16 Gucci collection is pretty much the perfect for Blanchett and this event and as with Larson I cannot wait to see what she will be wearing tonight.Nicki ReedA strong 1970s influence for Nikki Reed’s Etro gown and the color/pattern mix is the kind of bathroom decor I dream of (this is a good thing I promise). Bonus points for the relaxed fishtail braid.Cynthia NixonAnother print delight and supporting actress nominee Cynthia Nixon has got the whole fancy daytime event at the beach thing down.Emilia ClarkeAt the recent Michael Kors Collection Fall 16 RTW show there was a whole lot of amazing collars on display and this dress is one I had saved in my “things I would definitely wear” folder (yes I have one of those). While I would stick with it buttoned up (as it was on the runway) the cuffs are much better this way and Emilia Clarke looks great. Excellent bag choice too.Mya TaylorMya Taylor made history by becoming the first transgender actress to win an Independent Spirit Award (or any major film awards) and her speech is an essential watch. Another fantastic dress which is giving me all the 1970s feelings and a sparkly patterned delight.Rachel McAdamsRachel McAdams has stepped up her red carpet game this awards season and this Solace London ensemble is equal parts grand and simple. Minimal makeup and fuss free hair adds to the chilled out vibe as this dress could be overwhelming at an event like this if the overall styling was different. Kate McKinnonIndependent Spirit Awards co-host Kate McKinnon sounds the #LadySuitWatch2016 klaxon and looks spectacular. Thanks to this one scene Carol parody I now want to see Kate McKinnon in a feature length version.Rooney Mara sunglassesGoing a little Gatsby with her sunglasses choice and Rooney Mara looking all kinds of relaxed out in the sun while wearing the most Rooney Mara dress in Hugo Boss. Rooney and CateA change in glasses and I think I just found my new Twitter cover photo.

Stay tuned as we’ve got dudes in suits and couples coming up next!

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

26 Feb

Award season is almost over, but we’ve got some more treats from the Costume Designers Guild Awards and there is of course the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars this weekend. Plus London Fashion Week, magazine covers and more.Constance ZimmerI wanted to focus on the costume designers in the original Costume Designers Guild Awards post – it is their awards after all – so there are a few presenters featured here instead. Constance Zimmer’s Laundry by Shelli Segal floral number is the ideal ‘starting to think about spring’ frock and she’s paired it perfectly with baby blue pumps and a mirrored Vince Camuto clutch (Viola Davis is also a fan).  Betsy BrandMore floral pretty from host Betsy Brandt in a Kayat dress and pastel season is upon us.Andre HollandOh hello, Andre Holland.

Noomi RapaceAt the Burberry London Fashion Week show the stars were out including Noomi Rapace giving me all the casual coat slung over the shoulder envy. I’m not sure there are many other people who could pull off such heavy bangs on a haircut this short (maybe Karen O), but I love Rapace’s very distinct style choices. Even if I’m also concerned that her feet must be freezing in shoes like this in February. Clemence PoesyI am a sucker for both Breton stripes and trench coats so Clémence Poésy was always going to score high with this look.Danai GuriraThis has been a huge week for Danai Gurira as the play she wrote has moved from off-Broadway to Broadway for previews. Gurira’s Liberian Civil War drama Eclipsed stars Lupita Nyong’o and this is a powerhouse combination. On the TV side of things Richonne happened and I can’t tell you how long it has been since I cared about anything on The Walking Dead; the way it moved from super tender to super hot was really well done.

At the Eclipsed preview Gurira did the fantastic coat thing over a bold Altuzarra dress and this color is great on her. Brie LarsonBrie Larson is about to have her very big night if Oscar predictions are anything to go by (I really want her to win) and this cover from Women’s Wear Daily captures a moment of getting ready (in which she was actually getting ready for the Oscar nominees luncheon). In the interview Larson discusses what it has been like shooting a movie (Kong: Skull Island) at the same time as award season commitments:

“On my weekends, I’m wearing designer clothes, getting my nails painted and living a polished lifestyle, then I come back here and I’m climbing mountains covered in dirt. Until this movie comes out [in March 2017], no one gets that. It’s like having two best friends you never invite to the same dinner. But that balance has been helpful because I’ve had zero time to process any of this. Because I’m not in L.A., I can’t gauge how life has changed. I’m still myself.”

And a vague description of what we can expect come Sunday “I really want it to be special and encompass colors and visions that are meaningful to me.” Larson has had a lot more hits than misses and she is definitely one of my most anticipated.Kiernan ShipkaKiernan Shipka covers the new issue of Dazed magazine and the way she is looking directly at the viewer is disarming, somewhat confrontational and incredibly beautiful. In the interview she comes across as you might expect/hope; smart and also still sounding like a teen. The latter part is important.

Shipka discusses playing Sally – “I was totally connected to Sally’s experience and willing to go on any journey with her” – and how the women on Mad Men influenced her by being “such cool forces.” Despite being in showbiz for pretty much her whole life she has some very normal reactions to meeting other famous people including her description of the time she met Annie Clarke; “It involved me falling apart.” It is a great interview/photo shoot and you can check out the whole thing here.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

25 Feb

Time to serve up the best of Instagram over the past week including some more fashion week, awards and plenty of behind the scenes shenanigans including Agent CarterJane the VirginThe Americans and Girls.

Girls returned with a strong season 5 premiere and so much of this was down to Allison Williams crushing it on Marnie’s wedding day (new writing gig and more thoughts on that here). The extreme make-up was such a good visual joke so it was fun to see a very make-up Jekyll and Hyde version of Williams here.

Agent Carter did something very fun/different this week with an elaborate song and dance dream sequence routine involving Peggy’s current love interests, her enemies and friends (including Angie which pleased me immensely). Jarvis also got a pretty good end of this deal.

Bridget Regan is everywhere at the moment and even though she has a tendency to play the villain I am also always rooting for her. This is adorable for starters. If not a little complicated now.

At the Costume Designers Guild Awards this week Mindy Kaling wore a stunning custom Salvador Perez gown and here she gives a sneak peek into the prep of an event like this. And I love her for this.

Fox are staying in the live musical business with an adaptation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and as with the recent Grease: Live this cast has increased my interest levels.

From one Rocky to another and Russell Tovey’s dog is now the proud owner of a sweater matching the Gant by Michael Bastian one that Tovey wore as Kevin (and then lent to Patrick) on Looking last season.

Keidrich Sellati who plays Henry Jennings on The Americans grew 6 inches over the break and considering season 4 is starting up where season 3 left off this could prove to be visually interesting when Henry next pops up. Holly Taylor’s photo here form Sellati’s last day on set really does make them look like siblings mucking around instead of posing properly for a picture.

Oh to see in those garment bags. As you can tell I am very much looking forward to the return of The Americans and seeing what treats Katie Irish has in store for us (previous Americans costume designer and TV Ate My Wardrobe fave Jenny Gering co-designed the look of the premiere with Irish).

This street style shot of Annet Mahendru at NYFW looks like it could be an actual campaign ad for Alice + Olivia.

Following on from FaceTiming with Desmin Borges last week, Kether Donohue is now reading audition sides with Allan Mcleod. I heart this cast hard.

June seems so far away.

Sarah Michelle Gellar went all nostalgic with her WCW using a shot from this mesmerizing WB promo. Right before she dropped this HUGE Cruel Intentions bombshell (this post is currently being written to the always incredible Cruel Intentions soundtrack).

I always made the mistake of wearing sandals/flip flops to clubs in the summer and this was always a giant sticky mistake. I have never ended up with red feet though (I did once see bloody footprints in the morning and I put this down to glass rather than something more sinister).

Liv Tyler’s photo (of a Polaroid) with Kate Moss just hit peak 90s nostalgia.

And here is Tyler now. This Stella McCartney dress, the color, the shape is everything.

The 18th Costume Designers Guild Awards

24 Feb

Costume design took center stage last night at the 18th Costume Designers Guild Awards. A celebration that is TV Ate My Wardrobe award season high point as it showcases the incredible talent that has such a big influence on us here.

Film, TV and short-form are all included with period, contemporary and fantasy getting their own TV and film categories (this is the first year in which television has a fantasy option rather than the mini-series/TV one). Plenty of stars were in attendance both in a presenting capacity and to support the costume designers they have worked with and Besty Brandt was the evening’s host.

For the third year in a row Mindy Kaling wore a gown designed by The Mindy Project costume designer and Designers Guild president Salvador Perez; once again it is a look which shows how well Perez knows Kaling’s body and embraces her incredible figure. It is something he has done time and time again on The Mindy Project and of course it is bold in the color choice.Mindy KalingWinners included Michele Clapton taking home the first fantasy television award after winning for Game of Thrones last year when fantasy shared a category with period. Lou Eyrich also won two years in a row for American Horror Story despite a change of category (going from mini-series/TV movie to contemporary) and she can be seen in an incredible black ensemble with Beasts of No Nation winner Jenny Eagan below. Eagan won for True Detective in the contemporary category last year (and was also nominated for Olive Kitteridge).Lou Eyrich and Jenny EaganNon-costume designer special achievements were given to Quentin Tarantino who received the Distinguished Collaborator Award and Cate Blanchett was honored with the Lacoste Spotlight Award. Blanchett is in both films that Sandy Powell is nominated for this year (Carol, Cinderella) and she did not disappoint in her choice of custom Versace with a very impressive Tiffany necklace. Powell also looks fabulous with added mirrored and sparkle details.Cate Blanchett and Sandy PowellIn Blanchett’s speech she acknowledged the importance of working with costume designers saying “Everyone talks about their relationship with the other actors and the director, and of course those are important. But in the end, it’s in those costume fittings; those silent moments away from the rush, where you make manifest the psychological things you talk about in the rehearsal room. It’s the building blocks of a character.”

The Distinguished Service Award was given to master dyer Edwina Pellikka and The Knick’s Ellen Mirojnick not only won for The Knick this year, but she was also the recipient of the Career Achievement Award.Ellen MirojnickMirojnick’s work has spanned over 30 years and projects include many iconic costume moments such as Glenn Close rocking a lot of white in Fatal Attraction, all of those Wall Street suits, the Sharon Stone interview in Basic Instinct, recreating Charlie Chaplin’s famous look in Chaplin, Keanu Reeves in a white tee in Speed and so many flamboyant looks in the recent Behind the Candelabra. Some of Mirojnick’s pieces were on display as part of the stage decoration including Liberace’s incredible (and super heavy) fur coat that Michael Douglas wore in Behind the Candelabra and John Thackery’s signature white shoes from The Knick.Costume Designers Guild AwardsCostume Designers Guild Awards 2016Here is the full list of nominees and the winners have been highlighted.

Paranoia Runs Wild on The Good Wife

22 Feb

The big Good Wife Super Bowl announcement has put a countdown clock on this season and with each passing week it becomes clear that Alicia Florrick’s journey is going to come full circle; with Peter accused of a crime he may or may not have committed, resignation and the question of whether his wife will stand by him. The Education of Alicia Florrick is not going to see her making the same mistake twice and I have a strong feeling that Peter might be standing alone the next time this kind of press conference takes place; especially if she take Ruth’s advice to put herself first and get out while she can. The question is what charges are they going to bring against Peter and Eli is scrambling to get ahead of the FBI. Now there happens to be a big Elsbeth Tascioni shaped obstacle in his way.

Ah yes! It is always a pleasure to see Carrie Preston as Elsbeth and while there is a danger that things could tip into overly kooky territory; Preston manages to walk this very narrow line stopping her from appearing too cartoony. Plus it is always fun to see characters interact with Elsbeth for the first time and now we get to meet her equally disarming ex-husband. Plus it helps that she isn’t always sickly sweet and is very protective of her clients and her duties as a lawyer. The Good Wife 7.15 ElsbethThe question of who the redacted name is and how Elsbeth connected the dots has apparently been answered in the episode and yet I have a feeling it is someone else entirely who Elsbeth is keeping attorney/client privilege with and I’m pretty sure that person is dead. Yep I think Will Gardner is the one and it goes back to the stuffed ballot box from Peter’s election at the end of season 4. Will showed Peter a video of said ballot box and was being pursued by the Office of Public Integrity just prior to his death.

In “A Few Words” Will approaches Elsbeth at a conference in New York and asks her to represent him in this case as he is being pressured to break attorney/client privilege and threatened with jail time if he doesn’t. It meets all the criteria as to why Elsbeth has to excuse herself from working for Peter; a grand jury case (tick), against Peter Florrick (tick) and Will was a client of Elsbeth’s (tick). At the time it looked like this was going to be a huge story arc and that it might spell the end for Peter, but then the courtroom shooting happened effectively killing two birds with one stone for Peter and his Will problem. Not that I think Peter welcomed this solution, but you can’t say he hasn’t benefited from it.

This isn’t the conclusion Eli comes to as after following Elsbeth (oh hi Jason!) they see her meeting with one of Peter’s top donors (and dairy owner) Lloyd Garber and assume he is also being investigated. But Garber is also very close to Gardner and maybe I’m being David Lee/Cary Agos levels of paranoid, but I think Garber is a big red herring here. Now Will is dead (*sob*) so where this leaves Elsbeth in terms of lawyer duties is something I am not clear on. Regardless I kinda like the idea of Will bringing Peter down from beyond the grave. There are some things like the Russian in The Sopranos or the outrigger in Lost that never come back regardless of these shows ending, but I have a feeling we have not seen the last of the stuffed ballot box.

Over at Lockhart, Agos and Lee all the years of takeovers, schemes and power plays – Derrick Bond, anyone? – have taken their toll and David Lee takes the interest in the female lawyers for a profile piece to mean that Diane is intending to turn this into a female run firm. Because of course he does. And because Cary has been involved in several of these plots he is easily influenced in believing this is a thing. There is a lack of trust at this firm from all angles and it is hard to imagine a time when it will settle down and the major players won’t suspect that there is someone working against them. As outsiders both Lucca and Jason thinks this is kinda insane and Lucca questions Alicia about why they came here in the first place. Money. The answer is always money. The Good Wife 7.15 Alicia and JasonWith Jason, Alicia has a whole different kind of interaction going from elevator smooches to late night office hookups and finally Alicia has thrown caution to the wind in what looks like the same office where she had a very chaste moment with Finn Polmar. I know there was some John shenanigans as well last season, but eh there was nowhere near the heat as with either of these other potential suitors. Jason has concerns about where this might be headed and those concerns begin with Peter; Alicia explains the situation and that Peter is fine with it. Jason intuitively knows this is far from the case so Alicia tries another tactic first by playfully and emotionally manipulating him about her drinking followed by being direct; she wants him.

We don’t get to see where this leads as we cut to the NSA dudes who are not only listening into Alicia’s calls but also any conversation that happens to take place near her phone, which is pretty much all of her conversations. The episode ends abruptly and with a sense of uncertainty about what the NSA’s role is other than being an audience stand-in and how their investigation will impact the FBI’s investigation and Alicia’s work seeing as they did influence Alicia’s top secret case. I loved the look of pride/happiness that came across Alicia’s face when she was told that Judge Leora Kuhn was the one who recommended her and if Linda Emond isn’t coming back before the end then I’m glad they gave a nod to one of my all time favorite Good Wife judges in this manner.

I was hoping that with Alicia’s return to the firm there would be more for Christine Baranski to do; alas this week she was just dealing with paranoid dudes. Looking fabulous in the process (standard). The Good Wife 7.15 DianeIn a similar vein Lucca also got dealt the short straw this week as Cary tried to get info from her about this possible all lady takeover and getting booted from Alicia’s office when she wanted a word with Jason. There is also the small matter of a Top 5 Lucca Quinn outfit with this colorful dress. The Good Wife 7.15 LuccaAnd for a random Lockhart, Agos and Lee observation – I wonder why they have to spell out what is in this jar. Is it so people don’t think it is decorative? The Good Wife 7.15 candyI think it would be in Cary’s best interest if he did not align himself with David Lee even if he has cockroach levels of survival skills at the firm. The pieces are falling into place and it will be interesting to see where loyalties lie and who is willing to stand by who when it comes down to it.
