This is a pattern heavy time of year, much to my delight. So get ready for more fashion week looks, premieres, magazine editorials and one final 2017 Emmy Awards stunner.Alison Brie co-hosted Glamour x Tory Burch Women to Watch event and this entire Tory Burch look is the perfect look for a lunchtime shindig. Also, I need that bag in my life.More Tory Burch and a good week for pleats; if I worked in a fancy office, I would definitely want to borrow this outfit from America Ferrera. Dear White People’s Logan Browning gets the most ’70s of the Tory Burch looks and of course I love everything about this metallic floral number with a strong collar. Fabulous gold wedge sandals too. Kerry Washington was feted at the Women Making History Awards and gives great ’80s polka dot—see also this Zoë Kravitz in Vogue— wearing Carolina Herrera. For more in wacky fun outfits look no further than Zendaya in a Christian Siraino jumpsuit, serving up full flares. Love that she is wearing her specs to this event too. Gucci at Milan Fashion Week showcased so many wild patterns that continue to lean into my fave style decade—yep, the ’70s—and Dakota Johnson is in a dream of a dress. Continuing the theme of more out there dress choices and as with a lot of Louis Vuitton ensembles, I should probably hate this, but don’t. And I can’t even claim Michelle Williams blindness here. It kind of looks like a shirt/blazer hybrid giving me more reasons to scrunch my nose up and yet I find it charming. Also to be filed under charming is Domhnall Gleeson at the Goodbye Christopher Robin London premiere. He is everywhere at the moment and one of my favorite things about Gleeson is he plays so many different kinds of characters—last week I did a Domhnall double with mother! and American Made.
Of course he is in Burberry and of course he looks great. I do miss the beard though.Following on from the pink sheer socks Keri Russell wore and Kirsten Dunst is trying this style out in black as she promotes Woodshock. After all the fancy pants looks from the Emmys, this has been a great time for daytime sartorial delights and talk show outfits.
And because you know I have strong feelings about this relationship. Plus, Kirsten Dunst’s mother also sounds amazing.Another week, another fabulousMaggie Gyllenhaal editorial as she talks The Deuce with Harper’s Bazaar. An office themed photoshoot and I definitely raised an eyebrow at their choice of headline. But the piece talks about the research Gyllenhaal did for The Deuce in a way that continues to show how much thought she put into her performance as Candy and her role as producer:
“What is the story you’re telling, and how can this be fit into it, and how does she shift and change? How is she empowered and disempowered? How do those affect each other? We talked about all of that. After I talked up last week’s bumper “Out of the Box” this one is slightly longer and all the events, they keep on coming; TIFF, NYFW and the Creative Arts Emmys. We have a fun mix of fancy red carpet, daytime attire and even an airport look.
Plus, The X-Files celebrated its 24th anniversary and I wrote about Dana Scully’s influence on TV work wardrobes for The Observer. You should know by now how I feel about Tatiana Maslany’s style—strongly positive—and she gives great casual and fancy. At the Stronger TIFF premiere, this J. Mendel is of course the latter and the color/ruffles are fantastic. As is Maslany’s dark lipstick choice.
And as I mentioned on Twitter the other day, I am so excited to see her post-Orphan Black career and that her extraordinary talent will reach a wider audience. Mohair sweaters are a quiet obsession of mine and everything about Elisabeth Moss in Rochas, at a screening for The Square is ’50s inspired perfection.
Another fabulous pick from super stylist Karla Welch and I cannot wait to see what Moss will be wearing at the Emmys on Sunday.
Even if Brie Larson’s directorial debut wasn’t called UnicornStore,I would applaud her airport ensemble—fluffy whimsical sandals aside—and both Larson and fiancé Alex Greenwald look cool af.
The Vampire’s Wife is a brand that has been doing very goodthings of late and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s silver frock continues this trend. Maggie has been crushing it during this press tour for The Deuce.
Also, Maggie addressed one of the important issues of our time (and you get to see how great the sleeves are in this Watch What Happens Live clip).At the New York mother! premiere before this happened with a T-shirt swap, there was a whole lot of couples coordinating between Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. Also on the highly anticipated Emmy red carpet list. The prelude to the main event and the Creative Arts Emmys—for costume wins head here—delivered with Niecy Nash looking divine in a figure hugging and puffed sleeve scarlet dream.Also in red and giving me so much life is Angela Bassett in Romona Keveza. I’m sad she didn’t win her guest actress in a comedy category for the amazing Thanksgiving episode of Master of None.Serving up super sexy drama in gold and black Mikael D is Laverne Cox. Currently fantasy casting a movie with Cox and Margot Robbie based on their red carpet looks.I was already enamored by Emily V. Gordon’s style and then I watched The Big Sick and fell further in love—the red brain sweater was based on something Emily wore. This is another great red carpet look in floral Self-Portrait and Kumail Namjiani scrubs up well in a midnight blue tux.Moving on to NYFW and it has been a very busy week/month/year for Elisabeth Moss. And another 50s-adjacent look at Kate Spade New York. A brand I very much enjoy (and can almost afford).Florals continue to dominate and at the Refinery29 29Rooms: Turn It Into Art event, Issa Rae and Gabby Sidibe looks like they are having a blast.
Insecure wrapped up its second season with a very strong finale and it has been another season full of great costuming.Obligatory “I still miss The Carrie Diaries” mention because here is Austin Butler—wearing a Radiohead tee—at Jeremy Scott with girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens. Two mohair sweaters in one week! Skai Jackson pairs hers with a burgundy pleated skirt and this outfit at Libertine is pretty much an ideal fall ensemble. Jackson is only 15 and definitely way cooler than me.The Outlander premiere was an emotional watch for me, but I am very glad to have it back and switching out ’50s Boston maternity style for a very cool and colorful look at Delpozo is Caitriona Balfe. Balfe has been having a very good NYFW.Chunky ankle/calf boots are here to stay it would seem and I am more than fine with this dip back to the ’90s trend as previously seen from Louis Vuitton last year. Michelle Monaghan is at Oscar de la Renta and I love the edged up glam of this look.Obligatory “I still miss Selfie” mention and Karen Gillan’s super cute romper at Self-Portrait looks like something Eliza would wear. Plus, more ankle boots to covet.The Christian Siriano front row looked the most fun and I want to have a boozy lunch with all four of these women. And if Leslie Jones could lend me her cape then that would be a bonus.

Every single year, I know that everything happens in September and yet I get distracted by my birthday (which was on Monday) and then the fall TV, NYFW and film festival onslaught takes me by surprise. Every single year. There was also the Twin Peaks finale — thanks for that birthday gift, David Lynch — and I am still thinking about that.
The whole new year aspect is something I have discussed on numerous occasions and this time of year is both super exciting and incredibly overwhelming. Case in point; this week’s “Out of the Box” and it is one of our longest yet.
Plus be sure to check out this extended Maggie Gyllenhall rundown as she promotes her new show, The Deuce.At the Venice Film Festival, Kirsten Dunst delivers whimsy in Rodarte polka dot ruffles — a look that is similar to her recent Nylon cover — at the premiere of Woodshock.
Woodshock is directed by Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, so it isn’t a surprise to see Dunst repping this brand. Dunst has long been wearing Rodarte and despite the reviews, I am still looking forward to seeing this film.This is a little wacky from Priyanka Chopra in hot pink Fendi at the Pahuna: The Little Visitors premiere at TIFF, but so much fun. And an occasion where matching bold lipstick with a bold outfit could be a little much, but black ankle boots take the saccharine edge off. From Venice to Canada and now France; film festival season is in full swing and where can I get my own white picket fence with Laura Dern’s name on it? At the 43rd Deauville American Film Festival, Laura Dern gets a dedicated beach locker room on the Promenade des Planches and she’s wearing the perfect Gabriela Hearst Resort ’18 summer dress for the occasion.
Between Big Little Lies and Twin Peaks this has been a huge year for Dern on TV and I am already very excited to request a Diane manicure. Also, I now desperately want to have a Laura Dern themed costume party. Actually, make that a Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum themed party.
At this same event in France, Goldblum gives great polka dot button-down and the silver fox swoon levels are high. What better time to launch a fashion collaboration in New York than NYFW and Gabrielle Union looks stunning in this yellow dress from her New York & Company Collection. Plus these outfits will not break the bank; a NYFW rarity.Leather pants and a floral frock should not work and I’m not sure there are many that could pull of this look. And yet, Tracee Ellis Ross is doing just that in Ronald van der Kemp. That backdrop at Pat McGrath’s NYFW Mothership Ball is also divine and ups the drama levels. The ’90s are alive and well at Tom Ford — we truly didn’t know how lucky we were as Gretchen said post “Zombie” sing-along in the new You’re the Worst. TV Ate My Wardrobe fave, Julia Garner goes simple in black at this runway show and she is also in the new TV themed issue of Glamour, which is worth picking up. Important NYFW runway show update and there are no words to describe my levels of swoon. Calvin Klein drawing the flamiest of flame emoji attendants.
Former model and Outlander star Caitriona Balfe looks elegant in fancy office attire at the Noon by Noor (in Noon by Noor) NYFW show.Ladysuit alert! And I have been obsessed with getting a velvet number for the last year. Caitriona Balfe in Max Mara at an Outlander screening — back Sunday, September 10 — is only adding to this obsession.
I’m not wild about the black bralette, but she does look amazing and this works better than Maggie Gyllenhaal’s matching crop top number.At the GQ Men of the Year awards — British GQ always holds them at this time of year — Anna Friel goes ’70s inspired in a sparkly striped Dhela.
Important Pushing Daisies content. Yes, I screamed with joy when I saw Anna Friel’s Insta Story this morning.It has been noted that a lot of the October covers we have seen so far are visually more striking than the September offerings and I recall the same thing happened last year. There is less pressure for a big statement look and W’s new series of covers includes this Tracee Ellis Ross stunner (her second appearance this week). The color of that dress, the way she is looking directly at us and that powerful pose is all very mesmerizing. Saoirse Ronan also feels like she is gazing directly into my soul and the new trailer for Lady Bird also has me all a fluster this week.
Frances Ha is one of my favorite films and everything about Greta Gerwig’s new film is ticking all the boxes. I cannot wait. Stranger Things returns next month so expect to see this cast everywhere — I’m gonna start a season 1 rewatch tonight — and Winona Ryder for W is making me covet a leather beret.

Also in fabulous October cover news; Zoë Kravitz for British Vogue. This is the most excited I’ve been for this edition of Vogue and a fantastic sign that new EiC, Edward Enninful is going to deliver. Love this very fun polka dot number that Kravitz posted to Instagram and this is another magazine I’ll be picking up (even though I still have to read last month’s).
Film festival season is here! And this means a whole lot of great daytime photocall looks and fancy frocks with Venice kicking things off. Plus the VMAs and You’re the Worst’s season 4 premiere event. The latter is definitely on my most anticipated fall TV style and everything else list.At the VMAs, Yara Shahidi goes gold in Zimmerman and with a few creases aside it is a super sophisticated look from the soon to be Growin-ish star. Shahidi continues to impress with her sartorial choices.Sparkling under the VMA lights is Gal Gadot in a very pretty Prabal Gurung and this is a delightful look. Second week in a row for Gadot; sadly no Wonder Woman cuffs this time.Less than a week until new You’re the Worst — back Wednesday, September 6 — and at the premiere Aya Cash gives great metallic accents in a lovely purple number.
As always I have lipstick envy and thanks to You’re the Worst makeup artist Kristina Frisch, I now know that this Aya Cash TCA lipstick is Stila longwear liquid lipstick in Fiery. Social media really does help the makeup treasure hunt.Working the no socks thing and crushing these casual suit vibes are Darrell Britt-Gibson and Brandon Mychal Smith, with Britt-Gibson also giving great pattern shirt.My feelings are strong when it comes to a bold collar and Lake Bell’s beaded Antonio Berardi Fall 2017 frock at the Home Again premiere is ticking those boxes. As are the colorful pumps by Tamara Mellon and Edie Parker clutch.The Venice Film Festival is underway and much to my delight, Rebecca Hall is on the jury and at the juror photocall she wore a Altuzarra Resort 2018 dress that makes me want to get a cocktail. The pattern/silhouette also reminds me of a bathrobe that I own and anything that is sleepwear adjacent is a win. Fabulous strappy red sandals too.I’m digging Kristen Wiig’s bowl bob and polka dot Prabal Gurung Resort 2018 dress with bonus doily trim and billowy sleeves. Adding some silver floral flare in Sophia Webster sandals at the Downsizing photocall.And later on at the Downsizing premiere Venice jury member and Queen Annette Bening gives a classic style lesson in black Armani with embellished sleeves. Great lipstick and frames to boot.
We’re in the end of summer, pre-September everything is happening space and that means there’s not a great deal going on right now. But there are still events including the last vestiges of the Emmy campaign dance and more fabulous magazine editorials/covers. An Emmy cocktail reception going by the name Television Academy’s Performers Peer Group is the perfect place for Tracee Ellis Ross to show up in a Chanel embroidered ensemble and finishing it off with a simple white tee. Bonus lip color delight and this is all Tracee Ellis Ross in application (as per her Insta).
Also serving up great poses on her Instagram and this shot is even better. Karla Welch shout out and she continues to do her amazing thing. Cannot wait to see all of her many nominated clients’ — including Elisabeth Moss, Sarah Paulson — at the Emmys. This Monique Lhuillier frock is perfect end of summer florals and I love that Kathryn Hahn has gone with a shoe this pink. I also still need to watch I Love Dick, so thank you Kathryn Hahn for this reminder. And another Karla Welch picked ensemble!Looking classic in black Marc Jacobs with a hint of gold sparkle is Alison Wright and while The Americans has not had the award recognition it deserves, this show always does well in the guest actress category. Fingers crossed for Wright and that Poor Martha gets to drop the first part of that moniker. Always thrilled to see the RuPaul’s Drag Race judging team (accompanied by Delta Work) and RuPaul’s leopard print suit is divine. Also here is a really good behind the scenes look at the rise of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
On a personal style note, I have decided this will be the fall where I finally get a leopard print jacket. Watch this space.For the newly redesigned The Cut — which looks amazing btw — Julia Garner is here to make me lust after this Louis Vuitton jacket and sweater. And apparently I now have to watch Ozark because I didn’t realize Garner is in it and I think she is wonderful.
As this profile by Anna Silman mentions, the reason why Garner is so compelling is because she can play so many things at once including the role which has been discussed many times on these pages:
“As Kimmy, she harnessed that singular mix of vulnerability and toughness that has become a Garner trademark.”
It sounds like Garner is delivering on the contradictions in Ozark and I’m also looking forward to seeing how Kimmy will play a part in the final season of The Americans as Philip’s only spy operation.I’m so excited about Maggie Gyllenhaal being on TV this fall and all the profiles coming our way to discuss The Deuce, including this one from Time Out. Gyllenhaal discusses this new David Simon show and her dual role as actor/producer on this project, including what level of creative input she had:
“David [Simon] would come down to my trailer and ask for my thoughts. I told him early on that we get to see so much performative sex as a financial transaction, watching women dressing and coming in the way men want, with little to do with their own desire. I said, “Maybe you could have a scene where I masturbate?” And he wrote it beyond what I could have imagined.”
There is also a discussion about her brother and their different experiences in this industry. The bonus appearance of the Wonder Woman cuffs really makes the cover and I’m happy that we’re talking about this movie still. Ignoring James Cameron, of course.I love a good pun and this headline ticks those boxes and then some because Caitriona Balfe looks stunning on this Entertainment Weekly cover. New Outlander is coming soon (September 10) and the thirst most definitely is real.
EW loves a good steamy shoot and this time they are paying homage to From Here to Eternity; switching beachwear for some Outlander appropriate threads.
This has been quite the week and not in the way I normally open “Out of the Box” with a list of what has been going on in the sartorial world of TV, magazines and red carpets. Writing about the frivolities of fashion when such horrific events are going on can feel futile and pointless; having a respite while staying informed about the big picture can also be helpful.
So here are some of the style highlights from this week including the Teen Choices Awards, more magazine covers and Emmy FYC events.Zendaya in formal pajamas at the Teen Choice Awards is pretty much perfect and Ashish menswear pajamas at that. Looking effortlessly cool and this is the perfect event to mix things up on the red (blue) carpet.
A big shout out to Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach, for yet another solid outfit choice.From formal bedwear to formal track pants and again this is the ideal award show to switch out the usual frock for something slightly more fun. Yara Shahidi mixes athleisure with a sparkly top, heels and a Fear of God jacket and looks fabulous. Much to my delight the Emmy FYC campaign events continue because I love all things about the awards season circus. Especially when you get IRL besties Sterling K. Brown and Brian Tyree Henry getting to hangout on the red carpet, as the This is Us push continues.Another big drama contender is The Handmaid’s Tale and they are also out in force with their Emmy campaign. Cast members Samira Wiley, Elisabeth Moss, Ann Dowd and Alexis Bledel are joined by director Reed Morano and they are crushing it with their panel attire. Prints, pussy bow blouses, pants and killer red dresses are all winners.Amandla Stenberg’s 2016 Teen Vogue cover was one of my favorites from last year and her September issue appearance is another hit. This is such a good mix of textures and the direct gaze is once again full of self-assured confidence.
The interview is conducted by another TV Ate My Wardrobe fave, Janelle Monáe and they talk about her new project Everything Everything, the current volatile political climate and why Stenberg has ditched her iPhone for an old school flip phone as a way to disconnect and preserve her mental health.More from Teen Vogueand Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown giving great pattern clashing (with some more stripes to covet here). Brown is interviewed by former child star Drew Barrymore and they talk about the E.T. comparisons and working in this industry at such a young age.For Mr Porter, Justin Theroux gets to look moody in denim and knits. Pretty much the ideal fall fashion combo and he’s still rocking the Kevin Garvey beard.
He also gives good career that also doubles as life advice, “The key to continuing to work is don’t be a jerk. Because you’re infinitely replaceable.” And this excellent romantic nugget “Why would a man be intimidated by a funny woman? In a perfect world, a relationship is two people laughing together.”
Florals are here to stay — much to my delight — and this is the final week of the summer TCApress tour, which means more panel attire and some fancy awards threads. TCA is not the only celebration this week as there is also Black Girls Rock! and Variety’s ‘Power of Young Hollywood’ event.
Plus the excellent magazine covers continue. It is September (in magazine terms) after all.

As always I am intrigued by the new season of AHS, but I tend to lose interest halfway through a season and the only one I have made it to the end of was Coven. And that isn’t even the best one. So there is a high chance this will happen once again. But the cast is always very good and I am here for all the promotional time with Sarah Paulson. One of my best makeup purchases last year came courtesy of Aya Cash (also at TCA) and once again Cash is the lipstick queen of TCA. Yes I have shamelessly asked her on Instagram what shade it is (as she is sadly no longer on Twitter).
This Christine Alcalay top is also another fabulous take on the floral trend and I cannot wait for You’re the Worst to come back. Even if that season 3 ender was a full on heartbreak.Sterling K. Brown is a man of many talents — and surprise cameos — and at the TCA Awards he sang “For Good”from Wicked with former Wicked star and host of the TCA Awards, Kristin Chenoweth. So many swoons. Also a great sparkly mini frock from Chenoweth.
Not quite the usual hotel corridor pose from Elisabeth Moss, but just as fabulous pre-TCA Awards and another amazing Vampire’s Wife pick from Karla Welch. This color is stunning.Issa Rae was honored at Black Girls Rock – airing on Tuesday, August 22 on BET — and I am digging this whole ’70s vibe. Oh hey, Jay Ellis. Loving the choice of pants/jacket.
The video for Jay-Z’s “Moonlight” — directed by Master of None’s Alan Yang — is now available for non-TIDAL subscribers to watch, so that portion of pop culture FOMO is over and it is just as good (if not better) than the clips suggested it would be. Yara Shahidi once again proving she is a Magical Fashion Unicorn in a very hard to pull off Philosophy peplum floral jumpsuit at the ‘Power of Young Hollywood’ Variety celebration.If you know how I feel about ’70s styling — strongly positive — you will not be surprised to hear that I yelped with joy when I first saw this Zendaya cover for Variety, which leans hard into the whole disco vibe.
As with her recent Vogue profile, I read most of it pretty much nodding along and saying “fuck yeah” out loud. She’s great and I’m so glad she continues to get a large platform to speak out to fans both old and new.
She articulates why her Spider-Man character was so interesting and I hope this continues in the second movie “It was nice to play a character who wasn’t a damsel in distress but actually very smart, quirky, different and outspoken.” And on her fashion line she notes the importance of not having specific plus size sections “I don’t think thicker, curvier women should have to shop on a different section on my page or feel excluded.” Zendaya is the best and a solid choice from Variety for their ‘Power of Young Hollywood’ issue. Donald Glover wasn’t there to pick up the Atlanta TCA Award on Saturday as he is still shooting the new Han Solo movie, but it is clear he is having a very good year. And as this Hollywood Reporter cover notes he is quite the multi-hyphenate. A good use of millennial pink, aviators and the Gucci tiger collar here and inside the issue.
In the piece Glover discusses the success of Atlanta — which I’m gonna do a rewatch of soon —and what it is like starring in an iconic franchise as the younger version of an iconic character (and some of the behind the scenes bumps that have occurred). There’s some great additional quotes from Tina Fey, Dan Harmon and his brother Stephen (who is also a writer on Atlanta) and the whole profile is a fascinating insight into Glover’s process while also remaining enigmatic when it comes to his personal life.The September issue of Nylon used to be their TV special and there is still that element, but I’m not gonna be too mad about the lack of TV star cover when forever fave Kirsten Dunst is here. And she is wearing the same amazing polka dot Alessandra Rich number — minus the black belt — that Beguiled co-star Nicole Kidman wore to the Veuve Clicquot Polo event.
I haven’t bought Nylon in ages, but I will definitely pick up this issue as both the shoot and interview are great. This profile is written by one of my favorite culture writers, Molly Lambert and while this piece is about Woodshock, it also acts as a great career retrospective of an actress who has been around for what feels like forever and has done a number of very different projects. Plus what she looks for now as “A lot of the choices I make are director-driven. I’d rather do a tiny little whatever in a good film.”
A very busy style week, which is why there is a separate TCA sartorial catch-up here. Although, as it is still in full flow there is more TCA below. Plus premieres and some September issue offerings that not only give great photos, but also deliver on the interview front.At the Defenders premiere Mike Colter looks suave af in custom Michael Andrews Bespoke – they also do a lot of the menswear tailoring on The Defenders – and this is how you wear a three-piece suit.
I’m very late to Luke Cage (I’m about halfway through the season) and am thoroughly enjoying Mike Colter in his mix of henleys and hoodies with the occasional suit. I don’t tend to love a cut out, but Krysten Ritter looking hot as hell in siren red Julien Macdonald. She stands out on her own and in the group shots with the guys. Love that she’s not toning it down on the lipstick front either.
Thankfully I am not left wondering what brand/shade it is because Ritter’s makeup artist, Nick Barose shares the Lancôme details on Instagram.Elisabeth Moss has gone all in on patterns while promoting Top of the Lake and super stylist Karla Welch is all about floral Kate Spade at the moment (see also America Ferrera below). And they are working like a charm. Regular readers will know how much I obsess over yellow, so of course I am head over heels for Aja Naomi King’s Reformation frock that she wore to the HFPA Annual Grants Banquet. A strong week for strong lipstick.Also at the HFPA Annual Grants Banquet is Zoe Lister-Jones in a ’70s inspired Longchamp pattern dream that would look great in my closet. Lister-Jones also keeps with the lip color theme. So much happiness in this photo of Rachel Bloom and Albert Tsai at the CBS TCA Summer Soiree. Also sadness because I miss Bert and Trophy Wife. Bloom is also wearing an ideal patterned frock for this event.As I mentioned yesterday, Louboutin red soles are perfect for TCA panels because you’re gonna see the flash of red. The same applies to striped socks for guys as Sterling K. Brown expertly shows at the This is Us session. Also, oh hey Sterling K. Brown. Looking good.America Ferrera gives great floral frock at the NBC TCA day, in a poppy covered Kate Spade and I am so here for this sleeve length. There’s a couple of looks this week that point to the changing season (yes I know it is still August, but fashion is very much thinking fall right now).September issues are being rolled out and magazines are gifting us this week with some amazing interviews/editorials. This really is my favorite time of year.
One of the best comes from Town & Countrywith Billie Lourd as the cover star. Lourd is about to star in the new American Horror Story and original Ryan Murphy muse Sarah Paulson is the one who conducts the interview. Murphy is not the main link between these women as Lourd’s mother Carrie Fisher, took Paulson under her wing when Billie Lourd was just 10-years old. The interview is funny, sad and insightful delivering a look into what it is like to grow up with such an iconic mother and grandmother. Plus dealing with the heartbreak of losing both women within a couple of days of each other.
It is very much worth your time and the accompanying shoot is just as fabulous. Paisley frocks and ladysuits; my ideal combination.Aziz Ansari is a stylish guy so it makes a lot of sense for him to appear on the cover of GQ Styleand go to Paris Fashion Week as part of the profile. The interview itself covers everything from creative process to Ansari unplugging completely from the internet, which made me think of the Parks and Rec episode where Tom is banned from looking at screens. But a voluntary version. It goes to some very personal places and I do like an interview that doubles as an almost therapy session.
The clothes are a lot of fun and considering how much I liked the coats on season 2 of Master of None it was impossible not to pick this mustard yellow dream.Jenny Slate always gives great interviews even when she is trying to be a little more guarded than in the past as you can see in this Marie Claire profile while Slate discusses Landline (I spoke to costume designer Elisabeth Vastola about the project here).
One of my favorite profiles from this year is this Slate’s unfiltered interview with Vultureand this is something Slate brings up in terms of when only a few soundbites from a long convo spread far and wide across entertainment/gossip sites:
“It seems so naïve: You’re just talking to a nice person, and you have a really honest, beautiful conversation, and she writes about it in an honest, beautiful way. But then, it goes through all these other outlets and gets distilled. And then it can be made to seem like you were being cheap.…I didn’t mean to do that. Especially not with an experience that was so precious to me.”
Also these matching REDValentino stripe shirt and shorts are fantastic.
Comic-Con is done for another year, but it sure did deliver sartorially. Particularly in the area of a personal fave of mine; the ladysuit. Well, we have more menswear inspired tailoring from both premieres and photoshoots.
Plus Summer TCA is here, which means more panel attire. Ladysuit meets Cersei Lannister embellishments for Cara Delevingne, wearing custom Burberry at the London Valerian and The City Of A Thousand Planets premiere. Digging the pixie cut/headband combo and this is a great look for this movie. Seeing double Marc Jacobs at the Ingrid Goes West premiere and a coordinated Aubrey Plaza and Elisabeth Olsen. Love the playful twist with the almost-matching dresses – gold for Plaza, silver for Olsen – and how this nods to the plot of the movie they are promoting. One of the new shows I am most anticipating is David Simon’s The Deuce – because Maggie Gyllenhaal and those costumes –and at the HBO summer TCA session Gyllenhaal brought her lipstick and windowpane check jumpsuit A game. Also at the HBO session, Sonja Sohn discussed Baltimore Rising, the new documentary she directed; detailing the manner in which the media sensationalized the protests that took place after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody. Sohn is probably best known for her role in The Wire as Kima Greggs and on Sohn making this documentary, Wire creator David Simon said ““She’s come to love the city as if she was born there and she has documented something that’s very important.”
On reasons for making this documentary and why it is so important Sohn explained:
“The people of Baltimore are actually engaging in a much more sophisticated conversation than I was hearing or at least that the media was covering in other cities. So at that point, it was simply my love for the community, my love for justice and my mission… and I feel like my purpose is to make the world a better place and to fight for justice and truth and freedom.”
I’m currently catching up on Luke Cage and while it is only a fraction of the show, I’m really enjoying the interplay between Sohn’s Captain Betty Audrey and Simone Missick’s Misty Knight. At the panel Sohn’s got the ideal Summer TCA frock; a colorful maxi dress and sandals.September is always a busy TV month and Broad City is joining the fall TV fray with season 4 premiering Wednesday, September 13. At their TCA panel Abbi and Ilana discussed how the current political climate has impacted the show with Ilana explaining:
“It’s not just casual, and if you’re going to talk about it, you have to clearly state your beliefs and where you stand ethically or politically. So our message is heightened and crystallized this year after our hiatus.”
In terms of panel outfits these are both ensembles I would very much like in my closet.At the TNT panel for Claws on Thursday, Nasim Pedrad shows that you can never go wrong with a floral dress at one of these things.Bookending “Out of the Box” with ladysuits brings me so much joy, as does the new season of Insecure. The Cut’s profile of Yvonne Orji delivers on the photo and interview front and Allison P. Davis gives great insight into what the vibe of the Insecure set is like.
They discuss Orji’s stand-up career, religion and she points to something important about her character on Insecure, “Molly is not perfect and we allow her to be not perfect.” I’m really looking forward to seeing where things are headed for Molly and for a good look at the costume upgrades in season 2 head here.
Comic-Con kicked off yesterday and we have a few looks from panels and events. If Sundance is my favorite winter event when it comes to celeb casual fashion, then SDCC might be my fave summer event. I’ve said it before, but while I love a fancy gown, a more casual environment is what I really look forward to; these are the ones that actually influence what I might wear.
This is a bumper “Out of the Box” as Disney gave us a star-studded pattern extravaganza at D23 from the casts of A Wrinkle in Time, Star Wars and those who have voiced Disney princesses over the last 30 years.
Patterns continue at the Valerian premiere and magazines continue to crush the excellent cover/editorial game.One of the most exciting things to come out of D23 was the new trailer for A Wrinkle in Time and everyone looks fabulous. Coordinated without being matchy matchy and delivering on daytime looks to applaud. The trailer is also a costume design lovers dream.
Ava DuVernay gives both bold print dress in Prada and fabulous pumps, super summery Isabel Marant for Reese Witherspoon, Oprah is delivering on fancy office vibes/I want those glasses and the best outfit from the ladies comes courtesy of Storm Reid in a Chloe pinafore frock and striped blouse.
In the all-important matter of the Chris List, Pine has been top of mine since Wet Hot American Summer and the salt and pepper beard he’s working, cements that position. This Hokusaï wave print Sandro shirt is fabulous and I would very much like the sweatshirt version. And shopping the men’s section during the sales is how I end up with so many excellent striped t-shirts.The Force Awakenspress tour is a major highlight from the recent slew of blockbuster franchises with a big cast; it was both fun and everyone looked great. It wasn’t about playing it safe and the fashion choices were never boring.
New cast additions include Queen Laura Dern – who along with Nicole Kidman is having A YEAR – and Kelly Marie Tran. Tran’s first Star Wars related appearance a couple of months ago had us hailing her as one to look out for and she does not disappoint once again. Laura Dern’s frock is giving me some ’70s feelings and it will not shock you when I say that I love it.
The new behind the scenes footage released at D23 is delightful and emotional; it is safe to say the room got a little dusty when I watched it. Regular readers will know how I feel about ladysuits and Gwendoline Christie so this right in my wheelhouse. It looks great in motion and everything about this soothes me. I still miss Selfie and can’t help but think of this wonderful and underappreciated show whenever Karen Gillan appears on this site. What I love about this look is the Miu Miu frock is nearing the maybe too fancy for this event end, but is balanced with understated hair and makeup.
Eliza would probably have something to say about this. The shoes she would approve of. I am a fan of all of this.The new Wreck-It Ralph movie gave Disney a reason to celebrate the women who have voiced princesses over the last 30 plus years. Princess is not defined by who wears a crown.

I’ve listened to the Moana soundtrack while writing on numerous occasions and Auli’i Cravalho’s voice is an instant pick me up. This is like the photo version of that.And I very much want to grab a cocktail with Anika Noni Rose.Timeless is alive – much to my delight – and Abigail Spencer pattern clashes in a floral frock with leopard print pumps. I wholeheartedly approve.Lots of short shorts and heels at SDCC and Daredevil’s Élodie Yung is giving me starry short sleeve sweater envy. The choppy bob looks great on her. One problem with panel fashion is not getting a full body shot. TV Ate My Wardrobe style queen, Aubrey Plaza is also opting for shorts and giving great two-toned levels of purple. This reminds me that half a season of Legion is still sitting on my DVR unwatched.At the Valerian premiere Natalie Morales – star of another gone to soon sitcom, oh hey Trophy Wife – is another vision, in a textured pattern Rivini. So many different purple shades this week and the berry sandals are perfect for this frock.Interview Magazine continues to be good to us and Tatiana Maslany chats with Uzo Aduba about playing multiple characters on Orphan Black including one of my favorite things this show does; when one clone plays another. About this Maslany explains:
“Those moments are the greatest joy. I get to play with all of the things that we do as people where we see somebody a certain way, we judge somebody, we empathize with something in someone—all of the judgments, good and bad, that we have of people and how that makes us behave. If Sarah is playing Alison, Sarah’s judgments about Alison, the impression that she gets and the impersonation that she does. I like playing with the artifice of it and letting the mistakes and the cracks seep through.”
The whole interview is wonderful and Aduba is clearly a member of the Clone Club. It is also another great photo shoot from this publication and it is a picture worthy of an art gallery. The above portrait reminds me of a recent Orphan Black costume highlight.Also worthy of a gallery; this whole Ruth Negga velvet themed editorial for The Edit. In the piece she talks about award season campaigns and how she’s taking a break from work. The question of family arises because she’s an actress in her mid-thirties, but it doesn’t come across in the whole grating “can a woman have it all?” kind of way.Ruth Negga is always a red carpet highlight and she gives major props to her stylist, Karla Welch saying “She’s a huge feminist, and that was important. I don’t have time to go to the gym, and she dresses my body in a way that’s going to give me confidence. I like a sleeve, I like a high neck, that’s my style.”
As with all shoots from The Edit they produce a handy link to shop all the pieces. Alison Brie co-hosted Glamour x Tory Burch Women to Watch event and this entire Tory Burch look is the perfect look for a lunchtime shindig. Also, I need that bag in my life.
More Tory Burch and a good week for pleats; if I worked in a fancy office, I would definitely want to borrow this outfit from America Ferrera. 
Dear White People’s Logan Browning gets the most ’70s of the Tory Burch looks and of course I love everything about this metallic floral number with a strong collar. Fabulous gold wedge sandals too. 
Kerry Washington was feted at the Women Making History Awards and gives great ’80s polka dot—see also this Zoë Kravitz in Vogue— wearing Carolina Herrera. For more in wacky fun outfits look no further than Zendaya in a Christian Siraino jumpsuit, serving up full flares. Love that she is wearing her specs to this event too. 
Gucci at Milan Fashion Week showcased so many wild patterns that continue to lean into my fave style decade—yep, the ’70s—and Dakota Johnson is in a dream of a dress. 
Continuing the theme of more out there dress choices and as with a lot of Louis Vuitton ensembles, I should probably hate this, but don’t. And I can’t even claim Michelle Williams blindness here. It kind of looks like a shirt/blazer hybrid giving me more reasons to scrunch my nose up and yet I find it charming. 
Also to be filed under charming is Domhnall Gleeson at the Goodbye Christopher Robin London premiere. He is everywhere at the moment and one of my favorite things about Gleeson is he plays so many different kinds of characters—last week I did a Domhnall double with mother! and American Made.
Following on from the pink sheer socks Keri Russell wore and Kirsten Dunst is trying this style out in black as she promotes Woodshock. After all the fancy pants looks from the Emmys, this has been a great time for daytime sartorial delights and talk show outfits.
Another week, another fabulous Maggie Gyllenhaal editorial as she talks The Deuce with Harper’s Bazaar. An office themed photoshoot and I definitely raised an eyebrow at their choice of headline.
