Music Monday: Dressing like the Red Room on ‘Twin Peaks’

17 Jul

Twin Peaks: The Return is delivering the kind of live performances season 2 of The O.C. would have dreamed of. Okay, it’s probably not quite emo enough, but nearly every time a scene ends up at The Roadhouse a dreamy, mesmerizing experience takes place.

I would prefer less armpit scratching in the future. It’s making for one hell of a playlist and is the end credit music to end all no credit music (scratchy armpit aside).

“No Stars” by Rebekah Del Rio is the song entry for episode 10 and it’s another perfectly atmospheric track, but what got me really excited was the choice of dress Del Rio is wearing. Combined with the red backdrop this is the red room in the real world.I figured after watching this I’d be able to find a number of black and white chevron pattern dresses. Nope. There’s barely any. This vintage Oleg Cassini dress is pretty great.

This isn’t Rebekah Del Rio’s first David Lynch project as she also performed in Mulholland Drive.

Watch her Twin Peaks performance below.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

2 Jun

“Out of the Box” was on a break last week while I was away, which means I missed quite a lot of Cannes coverage – though not Top of the Lake – and so there is a little bit of overspill here.

Emmy campaign season has really kicked off now with more FYC events and The Hollywood Reporter’s roundtable series. So it is pretty much my favorite time of year. Plus various other events from the week, delivering sartorial delights.Kirsten Dunst in an outfit I would consider too good for a flight – hoodie all the way – but when you’re flying in for Cannes it makes sense to up the chic levels and this is doing that on a casual level. Leaning into a late ’70s angle (my fave style decade) and I pretty much want this whole ensemble. Also, hey Landry! At the Beguiled premiere there was a sense of gown coordination from Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst without being too matchy matchy. It has also come to my attention that other than the snuggling up daytime photocall posing, I am very much here for these arms raised shots from behind (more below).

Basically, Cannes is great for dramatic red carpet posing that would look a little ridiculous elsewhere.  And for the festival best besties I give you more coordination without appearing too coordinated and also at the Beguiled premiere.

Gwendoline Christie and Elisabeth Moss looked they were having the most fun together and I look forward to a lot more from this pair as they continue to promote Top of the Lake.In unsurprising news Isabelle Huppert looking cool as fuck in floaty florals and shades, at the Happy End daytime photocall. As you are probably more than aware, Twin Peaks is back and while she has yet to appear in the first four episodes, Laura Dern crushed it at the LA premiere in a slightly bonkers mixed texture/pattern Rodarte frock. As all Dale Cooper fans will know, Kyle MacLachlan can sure wear a suit.A glass of wine and a rooftop party in New York City sounds pretty perfect to me right now as I huddle over my computer in a very warm apartment.

At the People Book Expo 2017 celebration, Gabrielle Union and Janet Mock look fabulous in this setting serving up great daytime event style.

You know I love a hotel corridor pose (see 50% of Elisabeth Moss’ Insta posts) and the Mad Men cast give great hotel corridor pose. Alison Brie continues this trend while promoting her new Netflix show Glow – which I am super excited for – in this very ’70s looking Bella Freud frock.Keri Russell loves a leather pant and after getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Russell changed up her outfit to something slightly more edgy for her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! I’m just thrilled to see The Leftovers cast look this happy as they pose at an Emmy FYC event and I am so not ready for the finale this weekend. There will be weepingSpeaking of Emmys and it is time to sound the Hollywood Reporter roundtable klaxon! Kicking off with a whole lot of handsome dudes in suits; mostly looking at you Riz, Sterling, Ewan and Jeffrey. What I am of course really waiting for is the drama actress outing (sorry guys) as this always delivers.

But there are some interesting conversations to be had here, particularly from Riz Ahmed, Sterling K. Brown and Jeffrey Wright as they discuss the importance of representation and being seen beyond stereotypes. Another pre-Emmy annual highlight from The Hollywood Reporter is the supporting actor class photo which features a mix of performers from comedy and drama. Notable style highlights here include the women in various shades of red – Samira Wiley, Aisha Hinds, Alison Wright, Ali Wong, Aubrey Plaza – patterned dress delights from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rose Byrne, and Insecure’s Jay Ellis being the number one dapper gentleman.

TV at Cannes: ‘Top of the Lake’ Photocall

23 May

I’m loathe to use #SquadGoals, but the Cannes photocall for Top of the Lake: China Girl is exactly that. The above photo looks so relaxing. And I am fully in love with Gwendoline Christie’s choice of heels that look like a red version of the Black Lodge floor (Twin Peaks  is penetrating all). Just because she’s already tall doesn’t mean she can’t indulge in another few inches.

All three women are enjoying success with multiple projects including other TV hits such as Nicole Kidman’s Big Little Lies and Elisbeth Moss in The Handmaid’s Tale. Plus Christie has season 7 of Game of Thrones premiering in July. Oh and this amazing new Vanity Fair cover for The Last Jedi

Here is the first trailer for Top of the Lake: China Girl.

It is safe to say that this is one of my most anticipated shows of 2017.

Updated to add this Instagram delight.

You're welcome:) #Cannes #totlchinagirl

Laura Dern Talks Big Little Lies, Enlightened and Working with David Lynch

16 May

The gap between film and TV award season chatter feels like it gets smaller every year and I am thrilled that this time of year is upon us. To the extent that I even wondered out loud (or rather on Twitter), which Big Little Lies cast member will take part in The Hollywood Reporter’s roundtable discussion.

Another go to source for all things awards is Goldderby and their interview series constantly delivers on in-depth interviews with actors and creatives who might be hearing their names called come nomination day (July 13). This is when I fall down a YouTube hole and the next thing I know it is a couple of hours later; they tend to run around the twenty minute mark and this is pretty much the ideal length for getting sucked in.One of the best shows from this awards year is Big Little Lies and it is one I keep returning to in terms of how much time it is occupying conversations and thought space. Plus I’ve been pretty much listening to the soundtrack on a daily basis. It is also one of the reasons why the mini-series category looks set to be one of the most interesting and while there is talk of a potential second season (this gets touched on in the interview below) it is pretty much perfect as it is. Even though we live in a time when anything can be resurrected it doesn’t mean it should.

Which brings me to this interview with Laura Dern and unsurprisingly Dern is a delight offering up thoughts on why Big Little Lies resonated, everything she loves about playing Renata and working with a lot of the Wild team again. Dern also talks about characters it has been hard saying goodbye too and what she says will likely please fans of Enlightened.

There is also the small matter of teaming up with David Lynch again for the Twin Peaks revival and as I already mentioned any TV show can come back.

Award recognition and what this attention means in terms of the visibility of a project also comes into play especially as there are so many shows to consume right now.

Laura Dern also reminds me that I still need to watch Enlightened and I don’t know why I haven’t done this already.

Look out for more award season chatter on TV Ate My Wardrobe in the next few months.
