New X-Files Trailer: Monsters, Flashlights and Sunglasses

27 Oct

The X-Files revival is still a few months away and so far the promotional material has mainly focused on showing the alien conspiracy angle and letting us know that Mulder and Scully are estranged. It’s not all mythology episodes and the monster of the week are also making a comeback; much to my delight. I don’t think I am alone in the opinion of preferring these types of episodes over the alien storyline, particularly when the latter became convoluted and messy.  The monsters are coming with Scully explicitly saying so in this new trailer in a tone that seems less sceptical than you might expect, but things are not always as they seem on The X-Files. Other moments to get excited about include the lack of baggy suits (although I kinda miss them), the return of Mulder’s sunglasses and some playful flashlight interactions. Yes that is a smile on Scully’s face. The feelings are still being felt. There’s also a whole lot of creepiness, some folks who are less than thrilled to see Mulder and Scully and Mulder waking up shirtless in an unnerving environment. Sounds like The X-Files I know and love.

Watch the new trailer below and head here for the first full length one.

Shaking the Tree on The Good Wife

26 Oct

Alicia held favor in bond court for a very brief amount of time on The Good Wife before the judge was back to calling her Marie Antoinette and taxing her heavily. The issue being that she was causing waves in how the system flows as the court is more concerned with processing speed, rather than dealing with cases on an individual basis.

Everyone is a number and one in a stack of many files; those numbers include probation offers, bail money and their place in the pile. It can even be their weight which factors into nothing more than a way to sort out which bond lawyer gets first pick.

The Good Wife 7.04 AliciaIf this was a reality show then I’m sure Alicia might be pulling out the “not here to make friends” moniker as she is ruffling pretty much everyone’s feathers by disrupting procedure as she actually listens to her clients and actively tries to get them the best offer. But she has actually made friends and despite many exasperated looks from Lucca Quinn throughout “Taxed” it hasn’t damaged the rapport they have built up over the last few weeks; much to my delight.

A+ disdain and patterned outfit combo.

The Good Wife 7.04 Lucca QuinnThe whole system needs a makeover, but money rules everything and there is “no glory in this slog.” Alicia is shaking the wrong tree, or really she is shaking the one which won’t pay the bills especially when Judge Schakowsky is at the helm. Alicia has a pretty decent civil action case because the store in question could easily be accused of racial profiling – as several real stores have – and instead she trades that for surveillance footage which clears her client. The problem is that it shows her client’s mother originally stole the sweater in question. Not exactly the win Alicia was hoping for. What it does do is open her eyes to her current working situation; Alicia has no desire to go back to Lockhart, Agos and this freedom in cases is exhilarating. And yet she is still bound by bureaucracy and people who don’t want to fix what is broken.

Cary wistfully remembers starting the firm in Alicia’s apartment and this is the wrong way to go about getting Alicia to return to Lockhart, Agos by doing Reese Dipple’s bidding. The atmosphere between the pair is warm and there is hope for a working relationship between Alicia’s startup and her old firm despite the prickliness from Diane last week. Alicia doesn’t want to be stuck in the favor cycle and starting over was meant to wipe the slate clean; now she is stuck in another kind of legal purgatory with Judge Schakowsky.

The Good Wife 7.04 Alicia and LuccaOver martinis with Lucca – wearing another fantastic outfit – she ponders her next move and when Lucca spells out the disadvantages of Alicia’s current strategy an offer is made. This is the offer I have been expecting/hoping for with Alicia asking “Want to do it together?” That is shaking the tree for better paying cases. We don’t get Lucca’s answer and this isn’t the first time Alicia has offered this kind of deal to someone (Finn *sob*), but they have proved their success as a team and I can’t see why Lucca would turn her down. Job security is one reason to stick with bond court and there have been a couple of moments of conflict; however this would be a good move for both Alicia and Lucca. Seeing Alicia working in a different legal environment has been fun and yet I am now at the point where a break from Judge Schakowsky would be bliss.

Another person who is causing a stir is Jason Crouse and woah is the screen oozing with all the sexual tension whenever he is on screen with Alicia. When Jeffrey Dean Morgan first appeared a couple of weeks ago I was maybe reluctant at accepting this new potential love interest; now I am all in. I am also fully prepared to be disappointed. Jason is a bit of a mystery and this is apparently part of the whole investigator persona – here is another investigator mystery WHERE IS ROBYN? – and Alicia learns a few more things this week. He used to be a lawyer and he got disbarred for punching a judge. He also claims he is one of the calmest, sweetest dudes but he agrees with Alicia’s assessment that she should worry about him. He claims he is not joking and this only makes him seem more enigmatic (and attractive). The Good Wife 7.04 JDMJust look at the way he looks at her (*swoony sighs*).

Tree shaking is going on all over the place this week and Eli is playing mischief maker by taking Cary’s turned down request to Alicia and putting the other female Florrick’s onto Peter, but really onto Ruth in a bid to mess with her. And at first it works as Jackie feels put out by Peter’s new campaign manager and Grace is passionate in her disagreement over physician assisted suicide and this bill. Ruth is no fool and she quickly figures out Eli’s scheme and sweet talks her way with both Jackie and Grace; Eli is going to have to work a lot harder if he wants to sabotage Ruth’s efforts.

Euthanasia and this forthcoming bill provide the thrust of Diane’s storyline and it is so good to see Diane in a strong plot of her own. Last season Diane had to go against her principals to secure Reese Dipple as a client and they even got rid of Alicia at his request because he comes with a lot of prestige and so much money. He is their new ChumHum and once again Diane is put in a difficult position to keep him happy. Dipple doesn’t make an appearance and I’m guessing Oliver Platt wasn’t available. Not to worry as Sandy Cohen himself, Peter Gallagher is here as a very welcome proxy and he puts Diane in charge of an anti-euthanasia case, much to her chagrin.

The Good Wife 7.04 Diane and SandyDiane might not agree with what she is fighting against, but they want her because she knows the case and she knows the opposing counsel. Louis Canning is a formidable foe and yet Diane is more than aware of his sympathy inducing diversion tactics. She can also argue against something she believes in even if she can’t always hide her distaste at the methods and overall objective. It even looks like they have won it until Canning finds the message board smoking gun. It is a mighty fine week when none of the usual victors – Alicia, Eli, Diane – actually succeed in what they set out to achieve as it can get really boring when our guys win every case.

And to close here is another addition to the Diane Lockhart stunning jacquard jacket collection.

Grace also continues her fabulous assistant blouse look.

One final patterned delight from Lucca. Sorry about the smears on the plexiglas.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

23 Oct

The red carpet is awash with bold looks this week from PaleyFest, the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards and a variety of other events delivering sartorial highs.

Tatiana MaslanyAs promised here is Tatiana Maslany at the Orphan Black PaleyFest panel wearing a fabulous Roksanda ruffled jumpsuit with color clashing red pumps. This is one way to brighten up a classic look with excellent results.

Diane Kruger and Zachary QuintoAnother jumpsuit twist with Diane Kruger sporting a quilted look from the Balmain x H&M collection event. I have a feeling this might be a Magical Fashion Unicorn situation with Kruger and it falls into my own personal ‘jumpsuits are awkward’ category. Very much into Zachary Quinto’s chevron sweater and they look like they’re attending a super hip party in the 1970s, which might include a bowl of keys.

Laverne CoxA gold pleated sparkly treat from Laverne Cox wearing Alice + Olivia at the One Life/Live Them event and this is getting added to the festive party ideas list. It was announced this week that Cox is going to star in the new Rocky Horror Picture Show TV remake and I am suddenly more interested in this project.

Olivia WildeTake two for Roksanda this week and another signature color blocking delight. Olivia Wilde also choose to give the outfit an extra pop of wow with red pumps; she balances the look out by opting for minimalist makeup and accessories at The Headstrong Project’s 3rd annual Word of War event in New York.

Ashley MadekweNow entering the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards section kicking off with Ashley Madekwe in Calvin Klein Collection teaming leather with what looks like a sweater and I am so here for this mix of edgy and comfy. So happy sweater season is firmly here.

Alicia VikanderAlicia Vikander is serving up casual cool in, you guessed it Louis Vuitton – the current print ad campaign is fabulous – and this is one fashion partnership I can’t get enough of. And now I’m left wondering what Raf Simons departure will do in regards to JLaw and the HUGE final Hunger Games press tour, which is fast approaching.

Ahna O'ReillyPow! Ahna O’Reilly in what would be an ideal (if a little on the nose) dress for something like Comic-Con and it also works like a super fun charm at this celebratory event.

America FerreraRed shoes are so on point this week with America Ferrera pairing her patent Kurt Geiger pumps with electric blue Novis and all these bright and bold “Out of the Box” looks have put me in a wonderful mood.

The Wish List: Jane the Virgin’s Sparkly Dress

22 Oct

Jane hasn’t had much opportunity to wear fancy dresses of late on Jane the Virgin and even showering is far down her list of priorities on this new season. Cue ‘Bachelorette Jane’ and a series of appearances to try and help Jane with her Team Michael/Team Raphael decision. This means plenty of wine drinking, rose holding and an endless stream of scenarios in an attempt to get her to pick one guy. This version of Jane wears a series of glitzy dresses all with a common sparkly theme and as the festive season is not all that far away (how is it almost November already?) this is the time to start thinking about holiday party attire.

Bachelorette Jane wears a series of long and short frocks and it is this Adrianna Papell sequin number which could work for a number of events as short is more versatile. Plus it is available in four colors if you fancy it bit more choice) and it’s not crazy expensive either.Jane the Virgin 2.02 Jane the Virgin 2.02 sparklyOne of the things I have discussed in the past regarding the costuming on Jane the Virgin is how the clothes worn by Jane are often from affordable stores rather than just a series of high end items. Of course she also wears some designer garments, but not everything Jane wears will cost you a month’s rent.

Take this striped casual top, which is by Stylus and is available from JC Penney; it is also super cute. Seeing Jane in fancy frocks is fun, but her everyday attire is just as appealing.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

21 Oct

Plenty of singing and dancing from this week’s TV Instagram highlights. Plus costuming sneak peeks and more shows going back into production while others are coming to an end. Ah the cycle of TV (and especially cable shows).

Kicking things off this week with a Pony related treat from Ryan Hansen. Yes please.

Now for something a little scarier from Team Hannibal.

And Mads just being very Mads. Not wearing the mask this time.

Queen of Dubsmash Hayley Atwell with co-star Enver Gjokaj doing the impossible and making “Uptown Funk” feel fresh again. She isn’t wrong about those hips.

Another pair of cuties.

This cast is everything. To watch their PaleyFest panel head here.

Tatiana Maslany switched out her fantastic ruffled Roksanda ruffled jumpsuit (stay tuned for Look of the Week) for something a little more comfy post panel and Donnie himself, Kristian Bruun captured the look.

Jussie Smollett continues his quest to capture Taraji P. Henson in various states of sleeping, singing and dancing.

Alison Bennett wrote last week’s episode of You’re the Worst and the end of “Side Bitch” was just as emotionally devastating as the Gretchen’s trip in the middle of night a couple of weeks ago. Luckily for us Paul himself Allan McLeod has a bunch of sweet photos to soften the blow.

Of course the ChumHum office has a slide. Cush Jumbo’s video also indicates that Lucca Quinn will be sticking around, much to our delight and one of The Good Wife’s most challenging clients will be making an appearance.

Family photo time.

The Americans won’t be back until the start of 2016, but in the meantime the Russian contingent are sharing some set photos and once again Nina has some fantastic knitwear.

Their characters might be on different continents; however Oleg shares his one-time girlfriend’s love for wool with his choice of tie.

It may not be a Mindy Project behind the scenes picture and yet it still makes the TV Insta cut as this scene made me laugh a whole bunch. And I continue to have Mindy pajama envy.

More amazing costumes from Salvador Perez and I am so here for this yellow Risto skirt.

Even superheroes need to take a break sometimes.

I am very excited about the Looking movie and Richie baseball cap sneak peeks. If only this wasn’t the end.

Joshua Jackson has a pretty wonderful view from his ‘office.’

A Guide to Steering Events on The Good Wife

19 Oct

Despite branching out on her own Alicia Florrick can’t avoid the office politics of her old firm and she ends up as a pawn across intersecting storylines in this week’s episode of The Good Wife. Everything is still shiny and new with this whole starting over business and Alicia’s isn’t the only one who is reinvigorated by a change in job role as Eli is positively thriving in his quest to ruin Ruth’s campaign. He is in full sabotage mode and he doesn’t even have to do that much heavy lifting in succeeding in his plan to mess with Ruth. Yes she might be able to dictate his tiny office space, but Eli comes with years of Florrick family knowledge giving him an instant advantage. Eli’s advice to Alicia about steering events so ‘they don’t steer you’ is his current playbook and at this point Eli has taken the lead.

What Eli is also doing is making it seem like Alicia is the one making the decisions. When he tells her that if she says yes to “Mama’s Homespun Cooking” she won’t have to do a dozen other things he is appealing to her desire to do as little as possible for the campaign. Eli knows full well this cooking show will be a disaster and this is what he is banking on. Why else would he tell Alicia she can be herself? If this had been during Peter’s other campaigns, Eli would be throwing a fit at the discussion Alicia and Veronica have live on TV; instead he is pretty much cackling with joy at their unfiltered conversation.

The Good Wife 7.03 Alicia FlorrickEli’s got his fingers in all the pies in “Cooked” warning the judge in Alicia’s case that he is part of a bribery sting. Not that Eli is doing this out of the goodness of his own heart and it is all part of his plan to bring down Frank Landau of the DNC. Last week Alicia reluctantly apologized to Frank and Eli mentioned a revenge strategy to her, but it is not Eli’s style to reveal all the intricate details of his plotting. So it looks like Alicia is about to get caught in the crosshairs of this scheme; I believe Eli doesn’t want to hurt Alicia, but I also think he is so angry at how Peter treated him that he is going to push this as far as he can go. Even if it means Alicia is collateral damage.

In bond court Alicia and Lucca’s working relationship and new friendship is tested when they are pitted against each other. Alicia finds a way for them to join forces, but there is an unsettling element to this case that puts Alicia in full paranoid mode. The involvement of the FBI instantly raises the question of a sting operation and the target could be a number of people including Alicia. It doesn’t help that Alicia has given her client advice that could be construed in a negative way and Lucca was the one who suggested this direction.

Alicia withdraws from her pally interactions with Lucca suggesting they have separate trials and Lucca is direct in letting Alicia know how she feels about this telling her “screw you.” Lucca is very good at her job so it is unclear why she is languishing in bond court when any firm would be lucky to have her and Alicia’s initial suspicions don’t seem that out of line. Thankfully the pair is not on the outs and Alicia has her back. Now to make Lucca an official partner at Alicia’s startup so this friendship and my love for Lucca’s costuming can continue.

Speaking of which here are the spectacular offerings from Lucca this week with check, lace and a jacket Diane would love.

The Good Wife 7.03 The Good Wife 7.03 Lucca The Good Wife 7.03 Lucca QuinnSuspicion is the reigning feeling this week with Diane flipping out when she thinks Alicia has betrayed her. Going back a few steps and Diane is suffering from young summer intern fatigue after her mentoring offer is met with a surprising lack of enthusiasm. Cary argues that people want work/life balance, which makes little sense to Diane. Diane turns her attention to Alicia and their working relationship suggesting to the equity partners that they share some of their overflow with Alicia. This is not an all together altruistic offer as Diane thinks Alicia can become their pawn instead of Louis Canning’s. Part of the reason she reacts so unfavorably to Alicia ‘helping’ Howard is this romantic notion that Alicia is of the same mold as Diane and this goes against that.

I would not want to be on the receiving end of this facial expression. Ever.

The Good Wife 7.03 Angry DianeOr this one.

The Good Wife 7.03 DianeKiller outfit from Diane (standard). In leather (not so standard for Diane).

Alicia’s apartment sees a stream of repeat visitors throughout the episode and when Diane makes her second trip she accuses Alicia of representing Howard and plotting against them. This isn’t strictly the case, but Diane is having none of Alicia’s ‘it’s not what it seems’ reasoning. Yes Alicia gave Howard advice about the ageism thing, but she also told him he needs to work harder and this is what he is doing. Really she is doing Lockhart, Agos a solid.

In true Good Wife tradition an elevator become the important location for a romantic interaction and after Howard had a meet cute with Jackie Florrick he asked her out for dinner. They really hit it off and now the pair is dating; this might be beneficial to Alicia if Jackie is happy in her own personal life as there will be a whole lot less meddling and fewer passive aggressive remarks. Actually that last one will always happen.

Plus Jackie is now part of #LadySuitWatch2015 after rocking an all white ensemble. Jackie’s heartbreaking story about her mother’s response to her laughter also goes a long way in showing why Jackie is the way she is.

The Good Wife 7.03 JackieThere are already many moving parts and angles getting worked at this early juncture and Eli Gold is hitting Blair Waldorf levels of scheming. Veronica warns Alicia that the good feeling from starting over doesn’t last forever and it will be interesting to see how long it will be before the wheels come off for everyone who is embroiled in Peter’s campaign and how sustainable Alicia’s solo project is. This is another good solid episode and the start of season 7 is doing a lot to wipe clean the memory of the disappointing State’s Attorney campaign, even if Alicia is not as in control as she thinks she is.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

16 Oct

Fashion Week season is over but there are still plenty of sartorial delights on offer this week with striking magazine covers and a whole range of red carpet events.

Taraji EssenceTaraji P. Henson killing it on yet another magazine cover (keep them coming as far as we’re concerned) wearing a stunning Fausto Puglisi dress with ultra high thigh slits. Henson discusses her work ethic with Essence and how her training informs her performance “These kids are thinking they can do reality TV and come and do this craft that I studied, sweated and grinded. People forget it’s a craft because it’s so pop now… Can they make me believe the words coming out of their mouth?” And it must be said that Cookie Lyon is so endearing because of everything Henson brings to this role.
Brie Larson
Another TV Ate My Wardrobe “Out of the Box” regular gives good magazine cover in this moody shot for Variety and Brie Larson is going to be a big red carpet presence this awards season if early chatter is anything to go by. Reviews for Room and Larson’s performance suggest huge things are afoot much to our joy; I just finished reading Room and I am excited to see Larson’s interpretation of this emotionally challenging role.

Anne Marie DuffTurtleneck tanks and ladysuits for Anne-Marie Duff in this fantastic photoshoot for Interview.

Kiernan ShipkaContinuing her reign as a fashion queen is Kiernan Shipka – and even though I wasn’t a huge fan of her Emmys Dior, it was at least interesting – wearing Bottega Veneta to the Hammer Museum’s Gala in the Garden. Polka dots and pleats perfection.

Cush JumboCush Jumbo is hitting style highs both on The Good Wife as potential new Alicia bestie and partner (fingers crossed) and on the red carpet at the Golden Heart Awards in a beautiful pink Michael Kors frock.

Emily Blunt and Diane KrugerAlso attending this event is Diane Kruger wearing Michael Kors hot off the runway from the new Spring 2016 and as with Kiernan Shipka she is showing how to wear black and blue together (for some reason the color rule of never wearing these two colors together has stuck with me).

Emily Blunt’s mixed textured Michael Kors dress is a fun play on pleated sequins and her black and gold puzzle clutch is just the touch this outfit needs. Now I am picturing Sicario with Blunt and Kruger as Sonya Cross from The Bridge. If that I had been the case I would have liked this movie more.

Lupita and DanaiDanai Gurira isn’t just an incredible actress, she is also a playwright and Lupita Nyong’o is making her off-Broadway debut in the Gurira penned Eclipsed. Both women look stunning on the opening night with Nyong’o dazzling in red Dior and the play has been getting excellent reviews so far. The wish list of stage productions I would like to see gets ever longer.

Talking New Perspectives at The Affair PaleyFest Panel

15 Oct

The Affair is not what you would describe as a light show, but there were plenty of laughs to be had at the PaleyFest New York panel this week. Showrunner Sarah Treem and the cast discussed the new season including how adding Helen and Cole’s points of view has expanded the world of the show by offering up four different takes of the overarching story. The general conceit is touched upon with the idea that there is no one ‘true truth’ being offered up and instead we are now getting four different versions of one affair and its impact.

Plus find out which actor gets the most shit in real life about their character (spoiler alert – it is Dominic West).

PaleyFest The AffairThe new POVs mean we get to move beyond the central love story and Dominic West mentions how in the first season Noah and Alison were falling in love and so generally they were on the same page. With Helen and Cole their feelings toward this relationship come from a place of betrayal and so their versions are in contrast; sometimes wildly so as we saw in the mediation and when Cole returns some of Alison’s things. It is no longer a case of spot the difference with clothes, hair style and tone, but a completely different take on an experience.

These extreme differences worked better for me in the second episode in the Cole/Alison encounter because there was a lot of wish fulfillment from Cole’s view; it was all about reconciling this relationship ending in a cordial manner and accepting that it is over. For Alison, Cole is menacing and a bit of a dick; this justifies her decision to leave. The box (which I’m guessing belonged to their child) is absent in Cole’s story and his day was already pretty bleak without this reminder.

Degrees of favorability come up and how generally the best version of a character is in their own story. This isn’t always the case with Joshua Jackson pointing out Cole’s day involves cocaine, drink driving and an aggressive run in with his brother. He also mentions a random blow job, but this scene didn’t make it into the second episode and this is one of the many jovial moments from the panel. While I don’t need The Affair to become all laughs all the time, it would be good if they could inject a sprinkling of the humor as this is a group of actors who have really great chemistry off screen as well as on. From this panel I know I need some more scenes between Cole and Helen; evidence in the photos below.

The Affair PaleyAnd here’s another because this panel really is delightful (plus I am weak when it comes to Joshua Jackson in a sweater).

The Affair PaleyFest panelThe Affair is a show that I find really interesting and infuriating at times in part because of the narrative structure and the storytelling device. This season is already more in the interesting column over infuriating as a result of the new perspectives and giving Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson more to do. Ruth Wilson also points out that Alison’s sadness has been dialed back a bit this year (“for you guys as much as me”) and while some of the standout scenes dealt with Alison’s all consuming grief, this is a welcome move.

Prior to this discussion the PaleyFest audience have just watched the third episode (airing Sunday 18) so there are a couple of ‘huh?’ moments in what they are referencing, but nothing particularly spoilery. Dominic West discusses the challenges of underwater acting so I will be keeping an eye out on his facial expressions during that scene.

At the end the cast are asked which of the other characters they have previously played would they like to see spend a day in The Affair universe and both Ruth Wilson and Maura Tierney come up with funny answers. But I don’t want to spoil it so just watch the panel here for that and enjoy the rest of this lighthearted affair (I will see myself out).

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

14 Oct

The returning shows keep on coming and so do the cast reunions on this week’s “Behind the Insta-Scenes.” Plus costume treats galore and other on-set antics.

Jane the Virgin is back (!) and this lady will be guest starring soon (!). It is all the better knowing Rogelio will be involved somehow.

And now a message of love from the Jane the Virgin cast.

Viewing party treats and this cast is all over Instagram for your Jane fix.

Petra’s getting pregnant cons list is long and includes maternity clothes, but now I want to see what costume designer Rachel Sage Kunin would stir up in this department. Meanwhile here is a regular costume fitting (this dress is fabulous) and Entertainment Weekly has more behind the scenes snaps courtesy of Yael Grobglas.

Game of Thrones costume sneak peeks courtesy of Emilia Clarke. And for a moment I thought Daenerys was going to be rocking a knit beanie this season (not really, but the wig net does look like winter head wear).

Look who else is in Spain. Possibly a coincidence, probably shooting Game of Thrones (as well as selfies).

Oh hey Team Marvel (on Netflix) at New York Comic-Con.

Production has started on season 4 of The Americans and Holly Taylor shared this spy like shot of the first table read (she also posted a clearer look at the table read set up on Twitter).

For us The Leftovers has only just started, for the actors they just finished filming the finale. Will we find out the backstory of the wedding dress gardening woman? And how she manages to keep it so clean while doing a task like this.

Digging Sherlock’s stripes and less than a month until Elementary is back.

Gabby Sidibe’s caption just made me laugh a whole lot.

It kinda looks like Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett are reacting to Gabby’s previous photo. Instead they were watching Empire and this really could be in reference to any number of scenes.

New Town, New Wardrobe for Nora on The Leftovers

13 Oct

When somebody joins the Guilty Remnant on The Leftovers they must leave the trappings of their old life behind including the clothes they used to wear. Nora’s change of costuming and the way she wears her hair when they move from Mapleton to Miracle (or rather Jarden, Texas)is less dramatic, but noticeable nonetheless.

In season one the most memorable item from Nora’s wardrobe is her denim jacket because it is the boldest color she wears; everything else is in the neutral wheelhouse with plenty of grey, navy, beige and black. In fact her Mapleton costuming is pretty similar to Kevin’s in that he doesn’t tend to stray from this color palette either – throw in some white tees for Kevin – and their instant connection can been seen on both a surface and deeper level. Cut to Miracle and the change is apparent; Nora’s suddenly wearing a whole lot of red and pink and Kevin is still in the same tees and undone button down shirts.

The Leftovers 2.02 Nora and KevinKevin and Nora haven’t taken the traditional route toward moving in together and it is what you might call rushed. Before they had even been on a date Nora suggested they take a trip together and this idea of getting away from the town which holds so many bad memories was planted long before Kevin’s dad recommended the same course of action. Kevin also warned Nora before their first date that he is pretty fucked up and these two have been very forthcoming in the secrets they share. The fantastic confession scene at the start of this week’s episode “A Matter of Geography” is indicative of why the Kevin and Nora relationship works; even after they’ve revealed the parts they are ashamed of they still want to make a go of it.

Or rather it shows how Nora and Kevin are fundamentally different as he thinks his secret will be the bomb that blows this whole thing up and she sees it as a sign they can be okay. Kevin repeatedly hits the self-destruct button throughout this episode beyond this confession scene; he digs up Patti’s body and then purposefully gets pulled over by state police and then he reacts in rage to the state of the new house. Full disclosure is not an easy prospect even for the most transparent of relationships; Kevin’s secret is far bigger, but we don’t know how much Nora has told Kevin about the theory the MIT researchers have about why some people disappeared and that it might happen again.

Jill gets it and it is a matter of feeling safe which is why Nora has gone all in on this property and place. For Kevin, Miracle is no different from Mapleton as his demons have followed him here. And by demons I mean Patti and her presence is just as strong. Secrets can eat away at you and this one is doing just that and his spiraling takes him to an almost deadly place when he wakes up half drowned in a body of water that is no longer there with a cinder block tided to his ankle. Patti is there to keep him company much to his dismay.

He has told Nora so much, but this secret is just too big and I think he is probably scared what might happen if he reveals this humdinger. There is a certain element of denial he can maintain if he keeps it to himself and yet headphones and loud music can only drown out so much. The season 2 artwork puts the focus on this couple and actually points in part to Kevin’s new ankle accessory; he is reaching for Nora and there is a push/pull between his mystical darkness and her new found optimism. From what we have seen in the way of Nora’s reactions to Kevin’s secrets I think she will be able to handle this and the more he tries to deal with it alone, the worse it will get for everyone involved.

The Leftovers 2.02 KevinAll the trappings of Kevin’s old life are still there; the restlessness, secrecy and look of panic etched across his face. Nora does bring out some calm and this union could be soothing if he would only tell her what the fuck is going on.

They’ve made a pretty big commitment to each other and the child they have adopted, but even that was not smooth sailing thanks to a broken washing machine. Kevin doesn’t have much luck with household appliances this week. But they look pretty complementary costuming wise in their appointment and they are both emphatic about their relationship status. Yes, Nora sounded far more convincing.

Also this baby is the most adorable.

The Leftovers 2.02 Nora, Kevin and LilyNora has worn her hair straight for pretty much the entire run, all with the exception of the pre-departure episode “The Garveys At Their Best.”

The Leftovers 1.09 NoraSo it is significant that she has returned to this look when moving to a new town where they don’t know what happened to her family and now she has a new one.

The Leftovers 2.02 pieBetween the waves and the injection of red and pink tones into her costuming Nora’s look has been softened and moves away from her business wear styling from season 1. She is embracing motherhood and there is added femininity to her attire. Especially when she is holding both Lily and a freshly baked pie.

The Leftovers 2.02 Kevin, Nora, Jill and LilyNora isn’t all floaty skirts and dresses and it is worth noting there is some mirroring of Jill in the scene above wearing a vest (red once again) and jeans. Carrie Coon discussed Nora’s relationship with Jill in this wonderful Vox interview mentioning how Nora “wants to be cool! She wants to be the best pal” and this is evident here. Jill has moved from the dreaded annoying teen position to someone I want to spend more time with and part of this is down to dialing down her antagonism levels.

There is now a certain kinship between Jill and Nora; instead of eye rolling her way through her dad and Nora’s confessions Jill instead cracked a joke showing acceptance. The chemistry between these three actors is excellent and there is a strong sense of salvation in this second chance. Potential issues could occur down the road, but at this point Jill has Nora’s back because Jill knows what a good thing her dad has got despite the peeling wallpaper and lack of lights. So Kevin, please don’t fuck this up.

One item I hope Nora has brought with her to Miracle is her perfect hat for spying and head protection is vital in a hotter climate.

The Leftovers 2.02 Nora hatShopping montages and throwing out old clothes were absent so everything we see Nora wearing in Miracle could have been in the suitcases she already had packed ready for her escape. Plus there are items such as her denim jacket and penchant for wearing necklaces that have made the transition.

This isn’t Nora removing herself completely from her old life, instead this style change is indicative of a new location and embracing the family she is now part of. For Kevin despite the changes that have taken place there is still this firm grip he can’t shake so items such as his aviators and Apple earbuds are a vital shield. Plus those glasses do look really good.

The Leftovers 2.02 Kevin aviatorsFor the Guilty Remnant the white uniform is their way of shedding any kind of connection to their past and any form of personal identity. Nora’s costuming/hair evolution points back to the past as well as welcoming her present; it is why she is so desperate to get away from the town that took her first family to a place where there were no departures. Red is a powerful color and adds weight to the idea that Nora is the heart of this family unit while also showing the gulf which grows as a result of Kevin’s big dark secret.

Jill’s words to her father are worth repeating “Please don’t fuck this up.” Even if we know he’s gonna.
