Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

20 Jan

More fancy pants behind the scenes shenanigans with a relaxed edge at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Plus babies, celebrating the return of Agent Carter and some A+ 70s outfits.

Will Forte showed that his new half-shaved look wasn’t just a onetime TCA affair (his entire body is like this, yep everything) and gave Justin Theroux’s expressive eyebrows a workout of Leftovers proportions at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Award shows can all get a bit much for some. The Jane the Virgin table also featured heavily in reactions to the super adorable Jacob Tremblay. They are all of us.

You’re the Worst maybe lost out in their category, but Aya Cash did score high on #LadySuitWatch2016.

Worstie dudes also slaying in formal wear.

Critics’ Choice Awards #SquadGoals

A very super smiley Liv Tyler on her way to the awards and it is probably a very good thing that she didn’t have to lie down to avoid crease awkwardness.

This looks like the exact kind of thing Tom Haverford would dream up and the fact that it is very real makes me so happy.

Also to be filed under “things that seem too magical to be true” is Kroll Show originals Gil and George appearing on The Bachelor live show and Jenny Slate filming her reaction. Yep, I still miss Kroll Show, but I am thrilled that Gil and George are still out there in the world.

SO here for this.

More adorable babies and hitting that ‘cast members who still hang out after their show has finished’ sweet spot. Also Dave Annable wins best Instagram caption contest this week.

Agent Carter is back and Bridget Regan goes full Peggy.

A smorgasbord of pattern clashing and bold color from the many outfit changes for Mindy Kaling on The Mindy Project. Even by this shows standards this is a lot for one day and it’s hard to pick a favorite; edging toward the floral sweater and pajamas with the dragonfly dress also wrestling for top place.

Mindy wearing one of the above selection and hanging out with my favorite of The Mindy Project’s guest stars.

I am super in love with Samira Wiley’s choice of eyewear. A big sunglasses week.

Jessica Jones has been renewed and I can’t see S2 Jessica wearing any other jeans than these ones.

While I’m on the subject of jeans – I am coveting these ones Gina Rodriguez is wearing hard and the whole 70s vibe of this outfit is ticking all the boxes.

Going full 1970s and the Vinyl costuming is part of the reason why I am looking forward to this show. Those glasses are everything.

The Wish List: Joan’s Pajamas on Elementary (Updated!)

19 Jan

Welcome to the first Wish List post of 2016 and super comfy clothes seemed like the best way to kick off this regular feature. Joan Watson is one of the best dressed women on television and season 4 of Elementary has only doubled down on this sentiment balancing her on duty (often patterned) dress wonders with her at home relaxed (okay also on duty) attire. Generally when we do Joan Wish List posts we focus on her eclectic range of dresses and while we do have one of these planned in the not too distant future – there has been so many to covet so far this season – we figured it was about time her pajamas took center stage.

It must cost a fortune to heat the brownstone, but one of my favorite details regarding Joan’s sleeping/kicking it around the house wardrobe is a) she’s always wearing some kind of slippers/bootie socks and b) the trusty comfy cardigan is a vital component.

Elementary 4.08 Joan WatsonWorking from home allows some leeway when it comes to your clothing choices (you should see what combination of everything knitwear I have on right now) especially when sleep gets interrupted. In last week’s episode “The Burden of Blood” Joan is woken in the middle of the night by Sherlock playing a disturbing piece of evidence over and over. There’s no need for getting dressed due to the hour/location and this means Joan pajama delights.

Elementary 4.08 JoanThe matching shorts and top are from Eberjey in “Oyster Grey Textile” and as with a lot of stuff Joan wears (and most characters on TV) it isn’t on the budget end. In fact this reminds me of another brand of sleepwear that cried out to me and that is Three J NYC, which featured on The Mindy Project. Basically I am instantly drawn to super cute pajama sets (see also Mimi-Rose’s J Crew pair on Girls last season).

Returning to the idea and execution of the comfy cardigan and this is a close clothing relative of the wine cardigan. Comfort is key (it is a comfort cardigan after all) and the proximity you keep this item to your bed speaks volumes about its function. There are several in my rotation that perform this role and it can be one you wear out of the house  although a true comfy cardigan is one which probably never sees the outside world. A hoodie also works and a lot of this depends on the time of year/how warm your house is. Plus, the longer the better.

The best thing about the one Joan is wearing in the scene above (sadly I don’t have the exact details of where it is from just yet) is she wore it a few episodes ago (in “The Cost of Doing Business”) thrown over a vest top.

Elementary 4.06Repeat costumes (especially when it is at home attire) ticks all my TV costuming boxes as I love to see a little bit of real world clothing situations thrown in among the expensive designer wear.

Update! So it turns out that Joan has had this red cardigan since season 1! And now I am even more impressed with costume continuity and disappointed in my own observation skills. Thanks to Laura in the comments who sent this link to Joan Watson’s Fashion Blog and a conversation with costume designer Rebecca Hofherr regarding Joan’s “house sweater.”

Update Part 2!

For the second week in a row Joan wore note worthy pajamas and this time instead of grabbing her standard house sweater she instead put on a robe to answer the door to greet Sherlock’s father. There is something slightly less casual about this choice of garment over a well worn cardigan I guess.

Elementary 4.09 Joan Elementary 4.09 Joan robeThe pajamas in question are bolder this week coming from Stella McCartney (and keeping in that high end/splurge bracket even in the sale) and the “Poppy Snoozing” shirt and shorts can be found here. There is even an underwear set if you want to get really matchy matchy.

Stay tuned for more Joan on The Wish List soon!

Best of the 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet

18 Jan

The awards shows they keep on coming and the Critics’ Choice celebration continued the Mr Robot hot streak. Plus plenty of amazing red carpet looks from those who attended last weekend’s Golden Globes and a whole host of different faces (including many beloved by TV Ate My Wardrobe).

Krysten RitterCombing one of the big trends from the Golden Globes (sparkles) with perfect for shimmying pleats; Krysten Ritter’s excellent Zuhair Murad track record continues. At the Netflix TCA panel it was announced that Jessica Jones has been renewed for a second season and I cannot wait.

Aya Cash ladysuitAya Cash stakes an early claim on #LadySuitWatch2016 in this excellent tux and gold tipped pumps.

Aya CashA clutch close up because Aya Cash’s Les Petits Joueurs should be seen in all its “AAH!” glory and last time we saw one of these fabulous Lego bags was from another award season shindig.

Judith LightJudith Light continues to work the red (blue) carpet like no other slaying in a turtleneck and jacket casually slung over her shoulders finishing it all off with a floor length (and pocketed) skirt.

Lena Waithe and Kelvin YuMore #LadySuitWatch2016 with Master of None’s Lena Waithe (posing with co-star Kelvin Yu) delivering polka dot perfection in a fun twist on this look and continuing pattern shirt dominance.

Chris GeeereThe You’re the Worst cast maybe went home empty handed, but they killed it on the red carpet. Every detail right down to the pocket square on Chris Geere’s Ted Baker ensemble is incredible.

Rachel McAdamsAnother amazing maroon dress and Rachel McAdams stands out in an Elie Saab frock which manages to make me love sheer (on this very special occasion). Love the delicate chain straps, tousled hair and bold lip color.

Kirsten DunstMore lipstick yes from another winner and Kirsten Dunst does delicate tiered sparkles in this very 20s/30s Chanel Couture frock.

Constance WuIcy blue was a big trend on the Critics’ Choice blue carpet with Constance Wu leading the pack in this ethereal Peter Langner number.

Sarah PaulsonMore sequin delights and Sarah Paulson’s Naeem Khan dress has a fun silk neckline and sleeve cap spin adding that extra something something.

SaoirseAnother recent repeat awards best dressed and another take on cornflower blue from Saoirse Ronan in Antonio Berardi. The sleeve detail is spectacular.

Eden SherThe Middle’s Eden Sher kills it in Rubin Singer and I’m so here for this fun play on black and white stripes.Constance ZimmerI love Constance Zimmer’s striped Tracy Reese dress as much as I love her reaction to winning (which I love a lot).

Carrie CoonAnother speech/winner I adore is Carrie Coon and she’s bringing the bold in blonde and a whole lot of yellow.

Zoe KazanPattern clashing at its best from Zoe Kazan and her take on the red carpet experience is worth reading in this love letter of sorts – in three parts found here, here and here – to her stylist and friend Leith Clark.

Alicia VikanderDitching delicate for fun and I am always partial to a bit of Mary Katrantzou; Alicia Vikander is the ideal person to pull this look off.

Tracee Ellis RossLooking fabulous in floral sleeved Randi Rahm and Tracee Ellis Ross demonstrates how to make a black dress stand out.Bryce Dallas HowardAs does Bryce Dallas Howard in plunging Balmain and as with her Jenny Packham frock at the Golden Globes last week she bought this off the rack (this time from Forward by Elyse Walker).

Maura TierneyPosing in front of a superb piece of fan art capturing the amazing Helen dancing in her spanx scene from The Affair is Maura Tierney working a Max Mara skirt and top with super casual fancy aplomb.

Rami Malek and Portia DoubledayDitching the tie once again, but sticking with Dior is winner Rami Malek posing with co-star Portia Doubleday (whose dress I like when you can’t tell just how sheer it is *shakes fist at this trend*) in front of the Mr Robot fan art mural.

Rami Malek and Justin TherouxIn my head they are comparing the amount of desperation, sadness, confusion and sweat levels in both of their amazing performances.

The Americans Season 4 Key Art and Premiere Date

16 Jan

Put Wednesday, March 16 into your calendars as that’s the day The Americans returns for season 4 and things are going to get even harder for Philip and Elizabeth (if such a thing is possible).

The promo department has done yet another fantastic job and this new artwork rivals the huddled gun toting red for my favorite of the bunch. Moving from Russian propaganda influence of S1 to something that look like it could be the cover to their experimental fourth album (probably with shades of electronica) and the central relationship is still the focus. Guns are still just as prevalent because danger persists at every corner. We will of course be talking all things The Americans when it returns and hopefully there will be more news from the FX TCA panels today. Check out of Elizabeth’s new disguises here and for Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys discussing costumes head here.

Update! It was confirmed at the TCA panel that there will be no spy baby (they are already filming episode 8), but if Holly Taylor gets her way there will be a spy dog in the future. A plan I can definitely get on board with. Other interesting news includes co-showrunner Joel Fields loosely discussing how long he could see the show go on for and that in a three-act structure, season four marks the end of the second-act. Plus as predicted things are only going to get more precarious and fraught for Philip and Elizabeth when it comes to their mission and protecting their family.

Out of the Box: Look of the Week

15 Jan

A red carpet heavy week with pre-Globes, other awardsthe main event, after parties and TCA with some people pretty much attending all of these. We’re going to concentrate on mostly TCA and after party sartorial delights with a dash of the Marie Claire Image Makers celebration.

Rami MalekRami Malek takes the crown for best dressed dude this week slaying in everything from his button upped style to looking super sharp in Dior Homme at the Golden Globes. Stylist Ilaria Urbinati is one of my favorites especially when it comes to menswear and she gave a rundown of the getting ready process for GQ, which includes Rami in a very lovely striped sweater. At the Mr Robot TCA panel he shows that he can also do the suit with tie thing in Calvin Klein rounding off this excellent week.

Carly ChaikinMr Robot is also killing it in the lady style stakes and Carly Chaikin’s AFI floral number was another high point of this very busy period (see also Portia Doubleday’s Golden Globes disco ball frock). Chaikin’s got another winner here in polka dot Jill Stuart and this is when a little bit of sheer totally works.

Jessica St. Clair and Lennon ParhamIn surprising good news from the USA Network panel it was announced yesterday that Playing House has been renewed for a third season and I’m so happy about this as I really need more of this wonderful show. Bold block colors were on trend at the Golden Globes and creators/stars Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham both look fabulous in this style choice.

Juliet Lewis TCAA classic floral frock for Juliette Lewis at the Disney/ABC TCA day and a very muted prelude to the cracked out brilliance of what she would be wearing later that day.

Kristen StewartUltimate Kristen Stewart red carpet attire at the first annual Marie Claire Image Makers event and everything about this from the coat to the metallic detail on her Sally LaPointe is perfect. Stewart was there to honor makeup artist Jillian Dempsey and her hair stylist Adir Abergel was also getting recognized.

Aja Naomi KingThe length is awkward, but this color looks amazing on How to Get Away with Murder’s Aja Naomi King. Plus it has pockets!

Honourable WomanI know I’ve already written about Maggie Gyllenhaal’s art deco looking Marc Jacobs dress (which I still adore), but I couldn’t resist this Honourable Woman reunion with Tobias Menzies at the HBO Golden Globes after party.

Carrie Brownstein, Gaby HoffmannSo here for the size of Gaby Hoffmann’s hair – Ali’s hair on Transparent in season 2 reaches new heights of everything – her dress, which at first I thought might be a jumpsuit and Carrie Brownstein’s oh so amazing patterned frock/general super cool vibe. Amazon Head of Comedy Joe Lewis looks rather pleased and swish at the Amazon Golden Globes celebration and I’m guessing that has a little something to do with the Mozart in the Jungle double win.Laverne CoxOh HBO, your backdrop is like the wallpaper I wish I had, but would immediately regret and it very much works with Laverne Cox switching one incredible white gown for another in custom Mark Zunino; adding her to the list of caped wonders.

Kathryn HahnAnd this is where the choice of posing wall pattern makes it feel like you are looking at a Magic Eye picture and therefore giving me a rage induced headache because I could never see the sailboat or whatever. I do like Kathryn Hahn’s dress despite the optical obstacle.

Transparent HBO AfterpartyEnding on Transparent chaos and another angle of this shot. Kathryn Hahn’s pose/face is everything. This looks like the later hours at a wedding.

Behind the Insta-Scenes: Photos from the Set

14 Jan

This week’s Golden Globes coverage extends beyond the many red carpet posts with a whole lot of selfies from the ballroom and the after parties. Plus a whole slew of other events and reminders of when certain shows are back.

Kicking things off with all the pretty from Gina Rodriguez and Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac. Plus Gina Rodriguez gives an all important beard smell related tweet.

From the American Horror Story: Hotel table where it looks like shenanigans are being had.

Backstage selfies with varying opinions about the lighting.

A quick change from Taraji P. Henson makes a whole lot of sense because dancing with a train that long is just impractical. Serayah opts for one of the bold color looks that was on trend this weekend.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BAc2gsjH4NR/?taken-by=therealshantel

Serious smolder and pout face from The Flash’s Grant Gustin and Shantel VanSanten and also a really good opportunity to remind you The Flash is back next week.

A shuttle shortage caused major parking lot hanging out, but our new favorite on (and off) screen besties took the opportunity to snap a shot.

A before photo from Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

It helps to be in with both HBO and Netflix as Pedro Pascal’s invites show.

The Netflix love is strong at a pre-Globes party with OITNB’s Elizabeth Rodriguez, Pedro Pascal and Netflix newbie Gillian Jacobs.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BAWVulZDFrr/?taken-by=gillianjacobs

A busy weekend full of events for many and Gillian Jacobs attended the Vivienne Westwood ‘Art of Elysium’ celebration on Saturday in this stunning floral number. Getting pet approval points too.

Carly Chaikin’s AFI luncheon dress is one of our ultimate faves from the sea of recent outfits we have discussed and we also highly approve of her selfie subject from this event.

A very good week for Taraji with awards and magazine covers, plus finally getting Jussie Smollet back at his own game.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BAVjqWGpQ6_/?taken-by=mindykaling

Mindy Kaling has worn a lot of amazing things and her Instagram acts as an outfit archive, but I can definitely see why she is calling this one of her favorites. All the heart eye emojis.

More X-Files treats this time courtesy of Bryan Fuller and a whole lot of pillow biting. Future Hannibal storyline in the works?

And if you were wondering when How to Get Away with Murder is back here is a delightful cast selfie from Viola Davis with that information.

A very intriguing Jane the Virgin behind the scenes sneak peek.

Just wondering how many synthetic beauties there are among this collection of Keri Russell Americans costumes and my eyes are instantly drawn to the green (p)leather number.

Elle’s ‘Women in TV’ Issue Gives Us Plenty of Reasons to Cheer

13 Jan

TV themed issues of fashion magazines brings two of my big loves together (I am still mourning the end of the Nylon’s annual TV celebration even though I’m now way older than the target demo) and Elle does one of the best. It has not been without a few issues in the past including the 2014 multi-cover selection that went in a different (albeit very beautiful) direction for Mindy Kaling as opposed to the other four (white) actresses. Last year saw them ditch this format opting to showcase only Lena Dunham, but thankfully for the 2016 issue they have returned to my preferred several recipients layout. And they have picked their cover stars well.

It is also interesting to note that while streaming platforms are definitely making their mark in a big way, when it comes to the shows these women represent network has three out of the five and cable has the other two.

First up the lady of the hour and winner of Best Actress in a Drama at the Golden Globes.

Taraji P. HensonTaraji P. Henson was on our favorite magazine cover of 2015 and this is another powerful image that doesn’t go down the obvious ‘dress as a version of Cookie’ route. Fearless, sexy and making me want to invest in red leather.

Priyanka ChopraAll of the covers demand the viewer returns the strong gaze of the woman featured and Quantico’s Priyanka Chopra is serving up so much face. Tyra would be proud.

Julia Louis-DreyfussMore hair touching and Julia Louis-Dreyfus might have had her ‘last fuckable day’ in this Amy Schumer sketch, but this is proving she is anything but (even if Hollywood thinks Maggie Gyllenhaal at 37 is too old to play the love interest of a 55 year old).

Olivia WildeIn fact Olivia Wilde at the age of 31 is the youngest of the cover stars proving that TV is the place to find interesting roles for woman (see also Keri Russell’s comments here).

Viola DavisLast but most definitely not least is another fantastic Viola Davis 2016 cover and while the other woman are giving off oh so serious facial expressions with a hint of knowing smirk from Olivia Wilde, I love that Davis is a full on smile shot.

I am pretty happy that because I get the digital issue I’m not going to have to decide which one I want as I’ll get all five – if I had to choose Taraji would probably edge out the rest by the narrowest of margins – and the issue is available on select newsstands from today (January 13) and nationwide on January 19. Stay tuned for our coverage of the celebration dinner that will take place January 20 and for behind-the-scenes Twitter/Instagram action follow #ELLEWITV on this day.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny Discuss Old Tensions and More on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

13 Jan

The X-Files will be back on screens very soon (Sunday, January 24) and last night the premiere took place at the California Science Center in LA. We’re very much in a 90s nostalgia period with both the pop culture and fashion of the time and like many this was not only a show I was obsessed with, but it was my first experience of actively shipping a couple on screen (and maybe a little off screen too).

Regardless of whether these six episodes are good (and I really want them to be, but don’t necessarily expect it after the last movie and tangled web of the mythology arc) it has tapped into some long dormant feelings and it is a lot of fun seeing how playful Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are with each other.

Gillian Anderson and David DuchovnyCase in point their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where they discuss getting back into character, bad monsters and rumors of an unhappy relationship.

https://youtu.be/G2Uc0vLO0uA

This is far from the case now and when Gillian Anderson tries to explain why they maybe didn’t get on it descends into the best kind of chaos and PDA.

The new(ish) rumors are that they are/have been dating and while this is very much not confirmed they certainly still have cracking chemistry and in a comedy sketch complete with wigs and oh so many 90s references – does anyone else find the sound of dial-up strangely comforting? – Mulder and Scully go way further than we have ever seen them go before on the TV series.

And for more fun X-Files related things check out the new episode of The X Files Files and a conversation Kumail Nanjiani recorded at 3 a.m. with Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny discussing old plots and monsters of the week. Anderson’s lack of memories of these moments is hilarious.

The X-Files returns Sunday, January 24 followed by another episode Monday, January 25 and for a 21-minute preview head here.

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys Talk Disguises and Season 4 of The Americans

12 Jan

The Americans is returning slightly later than its usual end of January/early February slot, but they are still doing the preview rounds including an Entertainment Weekly first look and now this discussion with Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys from Variety’s “Contenders” series (if only the people who voted for these awards would realize that).

I should imagine they will also be part of the FX TCA panel line-up this weekend, where they may or may not confirm IRL spy baby news and how it may or may not impact the storyline this season. One thing that is clear is that family will once again be the focus and that this central relationship is what drives The Americans overall with the spy shenanigans as the dangerous backdrop. The Americans 3.13 Philip and ElizabethIt is something Russell has discussed before, but it is worth repeating that this type of role is a gift for an actress in a sea of girlfriend/wife roles which have very little substance to them (Russell’s role in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is indicative of this). She goes on to say:

“Being a woman and just the type of parts that are available right now, to me it is such a great job because it’s kind of the best way to explore a marriage or personal relationship dynamics because it’s not like Thirtysomething or you know a show that’s just basically talking about marriage. All the jealousy, all the danger, all of those elements and trust that you would be exploring in a regular marriage show are there, but they’re so heightened.”

Disguise wise the hair and shoulder pads are going to get bigger and there’s promise of teal glitter eyeliner – which sounds pretty ideal for 2016 tbh. In terms of this being an 80s show Matthew Rhys points out how the showrunners have been “shrewd enough to not want the 80s be the other character” as it is a decade which can pull the viewer out of the story because of how ridiculous everything looks. Although they do point out that there is one actor – Keidrich Sellati, who plays Henry Jennings – who is constantly astounded by the tech of the time.

Other disguise aspects to look out for in the future include oversized teeth, which have yet to make an appearance so far as dialogue heavy scenes make it impossible to talk properly while wearing them. They also both point out how helpful the physical aspect of the costuming is when informing how they play these parts. And it is definitely something that is very fun to write about.

Watch the interview below and stay tuned for more Americans season 4 news.

Best of the Golden Globes 2016 Red Carpet: Tuxes, Print and Everything Else

11 Jan

Rounding off our initial Golden Globes red carpet coverage with a whole lot of dudes in tuxes plus some other frocks which don’t quite fit into sparkles, bold block color or black and white categories.

Oscar Isaac GG*waves back* Oscar Isaac really is the man of the hour and not only does he look handsome as hell in custom Rag & Bone, the curl and beard level is great AND he won for Show Me a Hero. Nothing bummed me out quite as much as the end of this David Simon miniseries and I mean that as a testament to the performance and the story. Plus Isaac managed to work a mustache and dad jeans. Not an easy task.

Jon HammAnother winner from the night from both a style and award perspective; Jon Hamm you are a dreamy delight.

David OyelowoDavid Oyelowo was a constant highlight on last year’s awards campaign and he defies my sentiment that we were just going to get a whole lot of standard tuxedos in this purple affair.

Aziz AnsariAziz Ansari is another dude we can count on as he goes for a muted twist on plaid.

Eddie RedmayneEddie Redmayne is also part of the fun suit clan and this Alexander McQueen subtle polka dot number is no exception. The lean is very much in full operation.

Rami Malek and Christian SlaterCrush from the mid-90s and current crush both looking mighty fine all suited and booted. The cast of Mr Robot is one stylish group.

Judith Light#LadySuitWatch2016 kicks off to a great start with the always amazing Judith Light.

Cate BlanchetThis Givenchy frock has a slight boudoir air about it on the sweeter end of the scale to Caitriona Balfe and this might be a Cate Blanchett magical fashion unicorn scenario.

Maggie GyllenhaalNot a whole lot of pattern on the Golden Globes red carpet this year and Maggie Gyllenhaal gets more 30s inspiration in this beautiful Marc Jacobs dress.

Maura TierneyI heart everything about Maura Tierney so I was very pleased to see her win and that she wore her glasses up on stage.

TransparentThis seems like the best way to finish today’s Golden Globes red carpet coverage with a whole lot of Transparent infused chaos.
